Networks of optical clocks find applications in precise navigation1,2, in efforts to redefine the fundamental unit of the 'second'3-6 and in gravitational tests7. As the frequency instability for state-of-the-art optical clocks has reached the 10-19 level8,9, the vision of a global-scale optical network that achieves comparable performances requires the dissemination of time and frequency over a long-distance free-space link with a similar instability of 10-19. However, previous attempts at free-space dissemination of time and frequency at high precision did not extend beyond dozens of kilometres10,11. Here we report time-frequency dissemination with an offset of 6.3 × 10-20 ± 3.4 × 10-19 and an instability of less than 4 × 10-19 at 10,000 s through a free-space link of 113 km. Key technologies essential to this achievement include the deployment of high-power frequency combs, high-stability and high-efficiency optical transceiver systems and efficient linear optical sampling. We observe that the stability we have reached is retained for channel losses up to 89 dB. The technique we report can not only be directly used in ground-based applications, but could also lay the groundwork for future satellite time-frequency dissemination.

Living copolymerization of mixed monomers can enrich the diversity of copolymer materials with well-defined performance via controlling both monomers and stereosequences. However, periodic sequence-controlled living copolymerization of same-type monomers with more than two components in synthetic polymer science remains a challenge. In this work, a new method of monomer-promoting asymmetric kinetic resolution-alternating copolymerization can let a tricomponent mixture of l-lactide (S,S-LA or l-LA) and two enantiomeric isomers of racemic tropic acid cyclic esters (tropicolactone) be polymerized into sequence-controlled -(ASASBS)n- type biodegradable copolyesters (the subscript S presents the configuration and A and B present lactic acid units and tropic acid units, respectively), and diblock copolymers of -(ASASBS)n-b-(ARARBR)n- can further be obtained upon addition of R,R-LA (d-LA). Compared to previous asymmetric kinetic resolutions of racemic chemicals via polymerization or organic reactions, no enantiopure catalyst/initiator is required in this system. After the resolution and alternating copolymerization of S,S-LA and rac-tropicolactone, the ee value of unreacted tropicolactone can reach 99.4%. The alternating probability between tropicolactone and lactide monomers is more than 96% in periodic sequence polymers of -(ASASBS)n-. The tetracomponent mixture of rac-lactide and rac-tropicolactone can be copolymerized into an alternating copolymer with a -((ASASBS)x-ran-(ARARBR)y)n- structure, in which the stereoselective linkage probability of 95% after S,S-lactide (R,R-lactide) followed by S-tropicolactone (R-tropicolactone) keeps very high too.

Three linear isoelectronic conjugated polymers PCC, PBC, and PBN are synthesized by Suzuki-Miyaura polycondensation for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2 ) production from water. PBN presented an excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 223.5 µmol h-1 (AQY420  = 23.3%) under visible light irradiation, which is 7 times that of PBC and 31 times that of PCC. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of PBN is due to the improved charge separation and transport of photo-induced electrons/holes originating from the lower exciton binding energy (Eb ), longer fluorescence lifetime, and stronger built-in electric field, caused by the introduction of the polar B←N unit into the polymer backbone. Moreover, the extension of the visible light absorption region and the enhancement of surface catalytic ability further increase the activity of PBN. This work reveals the potential of B←N fused structures as building blocks as well as proposes a rational design strategy for achieving high photocatalytic performance.

Background: We performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association of the systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) with long-term survival outcomes in patients with gastrointestinal malignancy. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science and Embase were searched for relevant studies evaluating the prognostic significance of the SIRI in gastrointestinal malignancies until May 2023. Results: 30 studies with 10,091 patients were included. The pooled results identified that patients in the high SIRI group had a worse overall survival and disease-free survival, which was observed across various tumor types, tumor stages and primary treatments. Conclusion: An elevated SIRI is negatively associated with worse survival outcomes of gastrointestinal malignancy patients and can be used as a risk stratification index for gastrointestinal malignancies.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) uses individual light quanta in quantum superposition states to guarantee unconditional communication security between distant parties. However, the distance over which QKD is achievable has been limited to a few hundred kilometres, owing to the channel loss that occurs when using optical fibres or terrestrial free space that exponentially reduces the photon transmission rate. Satellite-based QKD has the potential to help to establish a global-scale quantum network, owing to the negligible photon loss and decoherence experienced in empty space. Here we report the development and launch of a low-Earth-orbit satellite for implementing decoy-state QKD-a form of QKD that uses weak coherent pulses at high channel loss and is secure because photon-number-splitting eavesdropping can be detected. We achieve a kilohertz key rate from the satellite to the ground over a distance of up to 1,200 kilometres. This key rate is around 20 orders of magnitudes greater than that expected using an optical fibre of the same length. The establishment of a reliable and efficient space-to-ground link for quantum-state transmission paves the way to global-scale quantum networks.

To synthesize high molecular weight poly(phenolic ester) via a living ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic phenolic ester monomers remains a critical challenge due to serious transesterification and back-biting reactions. Both phenolic ester bonds in monomer and polymer chains are highly active, and it is difficult so far to distinguish them. In this work, an unprecedented selectively bifunctional catalytic system of tetra-n-butylammonium chloride (TBACl) was discovered to mediate the syntheses of high molecular weight salicylic acid-based copolyesters via a living ROP of salicylate cyclic esters (for poly(salicylic methyl glycolide) (PSMG), Mn =361.8 kg/mol, Ð<1.30). Compared to previous catalysis systems, the side reactions were suppressed remarkably in this catalysis system because phenolic ester bond in monomer can be selectively cleaved over that in polymer chains during ROP progress. Mechanistic studies reveal that the halide anion and alkyl-quaternaryammonium cation work synergistically, where the alkyl-quaternaryammonium cation moiety interacts with the carbonyl group of substrates via non-classical hydrogen bonding. Moreover, these salicylic acid-based copolyesters can be recycled to dimeric monomer under solution condition, and can be recycled to original monomeric monomers without catalyst under sublimation condition.

The controllable synthesis of cyclic polylactide remains a challenging topic so far. In this work, a new strategy of one-pot step-wise ring-opening polymerization (ROP) followed by a back-biting reaction of ring closure was reported, in which one magnesium atrane-like complex {N,N-bis[3,5-di-cumyl-2-benzyloxy]-[2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethoxy]magnesium} was utilized to initiate the ROP of lactide using 4-dimethylaminopyridine as a co-catalyst; then, macrocyclic polylactides were liberated out via increasing temperature after complete depletion of the monomer in which a back-biting reaction was utilized as a ring-closure method. The living feature at the first ROP stage can be proved well by the controllable molecular weights ranging from 3.10 to 34.70 kDa and narrow molecular weight distributions of linear polylactides obtained after quenching the reaction. The final cyclic polylactides with molecular weights (vs polystyrene) ranging from 2.50 to 16.10 kDa can be achieved too after the back-biting reaction of ring closure. Although a shoulder peak at the gel permeation chromatography profile appears when the ratio of monomer:initiator is high up to 100:1 or 200:1, this system is suitable for the controllable syntheses of cyclic polylactides with desirable modest molecular weights.

Synthesizing different types of sequence-controlled copolyesters can enrich the diversity of copolyesters and modify their properties more precisely, but it is still a challenge to synthesize a complicated sequence-controlled copolyester using different hydroxy acids in a living polymerization manner. In this work, a highly regioselective and stereoselective catalytic system was developed to synthesize biorenewable and biodegradable copolyesters of mandelic acid and lactic acid with isotactic-alternating, heterotactic-alternating, and ABAA-type precise and complicated sequences. Because of the regular incorporation of mandelic acid into polylactide, these sequence-controlled copolymers of mandelic acid and lactic acid show higher glass-transition temperatures than polylactide and a random copolymer. A stereocomplexation interaction between two opposite enantiomeric isotactic polymer chains was also discovered in the isotactic-alternating copolymer.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to construct a model based on the prognostic features associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) to explore the various mechanisms and therapeutic strategies available for the treatment of metastasis and invasion by hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. METHODS: EMT-associated genes were identified, and their molecular subtypes were determined by consistent clustering analysis. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) among the molecular subtypes were ascertained using the limma package and they were subjected to functional enrichment analysis. The immune cell scores of the molecular subtypes were evaluated using ESTIMATE, MCPcounter, and GSCA packages of R. A multi-gene prognostic model was constructed using lasso regression, and the immunotherapeutic effects of the model were analyzed using the Imvigor210 cohort. In addition, immunohistochemical analysis was performed on a cohort of HCC tissue to validate gene expression. RESULTS: Based on the 59 EMT-associated genes identified, the 365-liver hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC) samples were divided into two subtypes, C1 and C2. The C1 subtype mostly showed poor prognosis, had higher immune scores compared to the C2 subtype, and showed greater correlation with pathways of tumor progression. A four-gene signature construct was fabricated based on the 1130 DEGs among the subtypes. The construct was highly robust and showed stable predictive efficacy when validated using datasets from different platforms (HCCDB18 and GSE14520). Additionally, compared to currently existing models, our model demonstrated better performance. The results of the immunotherapy cohort showed that patients in the low-risk group have a better immune response, leading to a better patient's prognosis. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the expression levels of the FTCD, PON1, and TMEM45A were significantly over-expressed in 41 normal samples compared to HCC samples, while that of the G6PD was significantly over-expressed in cancerous tissues. CONCLUSIONS: The four-gene signature construct fabricated based on the EMT-associated genes provides valuable information to further study the pathogenesis and clinical management of HCC.

The prognoses of patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) remain poor due to the lack of biomarkers for early diagnosis and effective prognosis prediction. RNA sequencing, single nucleotide polymorphism, and copy number variation data were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Univariate Cox regression was used to identify prognosis-related genes. GISTIC 2.0 was used to identify significantly amplified or deleted genes, and Mutsig 2.0 was used to analyze the mutation data. The Lasso method was used to construct a risk prediction model. The Rms package was used to evaluate the overall predictive performance of the signature. Finally, Western blot and polymerase chain reaction were performed to evaluate gene expression. A total of 54 candidate genes were obtained after integrating the genomic mutated genes and prognosis-related genes. The Lasso method was used to ascertain 9 characteristic genes, including UNC13B, TSPYL4, MICAL1, KLHDC7B, KLHL32, AIM1, ARHGAP18, DCBLD1, and CACNA2D4. The 9-gene signature model was able to help stratify samples at risk in the training and external validation cohorts. In addition, the overall predictive performance of our model was found to be superior to that of other models. KLHDC7B, AIM1, DCBLD1, TSPYL4, and MICAL1 were significantly highly expressed in tumor tissues compared to normal tissues. ARHGAP18 and CACNA2D4 had no difference in expression between tumor and normal tissues. UNC13B and KLHL32 expression in the normal group was higher than in the tumor group. The 9-gene signature constructed in this study can be used as a novel prognostic marker to predict the survival of patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality; it has been reported that immune cell infiltration is a prognosis factor. Here we identified genes that associated with tumor immune cell infiltrate; the underlying mechanism was verified by in vivo and in vitro experiment. In this study, Weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) and CIBERSORT tool were used to identify MTIF2 as the hub tumor immune infiltrating gene in HCC. To investigate the underlying role played by MTIF2, MTIF2 was knocked down by transfection of shRNA targeting MTIF2, CCK8, and EdU incorporation assay was used to evaluate the effect of MTIF2 on proliferation, wound heal assay and transwell assay was used to confirm its effect on cell migration. Ecto-calreticulin on the cell surface was evaluated by flow cytometry, ATP, and HMGB1 secretion were tested to the investigated effect of MTIF2 on the immunogenic cell death (ICD) process. We found that down-regulation of MTIF2 impaired proliferation and migration capacity of HCC cells, chemoresistance to 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) weakened after MTIF2 was knocked down. Reduced release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMP) was observed after MTIF2 was overexpressed, which subsequently impaired dendritic cell (DC) maturation and proliferation of CD8 + T cells. Mechanically, the co-IP experiment confirmed that MTIF2 could interact with AIFM1, prevents AIFM1 induced transcription of caspase3, and finally suppress apoptosis. In vivo experiment also used to confirm our previously conclusion, our result indicated that MTIF2 overexpression suppresses tumor apoptosis and immune cell activity in the 5-FU therapy in vivo model, by suppression maturation of tumor-infiltrated DC. Collectively, our study confirmed that MTIF2 impair drug-induced immunogenic cell death in hepatocellular carcinoma cells.

Satellite angular micro-vibration has an important impact on the efficiency of space quantum communication links. We measured the micro-vibrations on the Micius satellite in orbit using a high-precision optical sensor mounted on the satellite and analyzed the power spectral density. We designed a compound axis acquisition, tracking, and pointing (ATP) system based on a two-axis turntable and tested its suppressive effect on the micro-vibration through in-orbit experiments. The tracking error caused by the angular micro-vibration was found to be 9.3 µrad, with the energy concentrated primarily in the frequencies below 30 Hz; after suppression by the ATP system, the error was 0.47 µrad.

Planthoppers are serious rice pests in Asia. Their population resurgence was first reported in the early 1960s, caused mainly by insecticides that indiscriminately killed beneficial arthropods and target pests. The subsequent resurgence involved two mechanisms, the loss of beneficial insects and insecticide-enhanced planthopper reproduction. In this review, we identify two forms of resurgence, acute and chronic. Acute resurgence is caused by traditional insecticides with rapid resurgence in the F1 generation. Chronic resurgence follows application of modern pesticides, including fungicides and herbicides, with low natural enemy toxicity, coupled with stimulated planthopper reproduction. The chemical-driven syndrome of changes leads to later resurgence in the F2 or later generations. Chronic resurgence poses new threats to global rice production. We review findings on the physiological and molecular mechanisms of chronic planthopper resurgence and suggest research directions that may help manage these new threats.

To meet the requirement of high-accuracy pointing of quantum signals in satellite-to-ground quantum communication, this paper proposes a flexible satellite-based pointing method that changes the fine tracking point to solve the problem from point-ahead angle and ground beacon laser offset. This method does not require the use of a point-ahead mechanism and can detect the pointing angle in real time. Detailed algorithms and analysis are given. The method has been verified in orbit on the quantum science satellite Micius. The satellite-to-ground test results show that the quantum signal pointing accuracy is between 0.5∼1.0 µrad, which meets the efficiency requirements of satellite-to-ground quantum communication.

We report the polarization preservation of quantum light in the optical systems of the terminals of the world's first quantum communication satellite, Micius. The main scientific experimental goals and polarization requirements of the satellite and ground station are introduced firstly. Three optical terminals are equipped on Micius to achieve our scientific goals, including a quantum entanglement source (QES), quantum entanglement transmitter (QET) and quantum key distribution transmitter (QKDT), and the function of each optical terminal is described briefly. A polarization-maintaining design for the terminals on Micius is critical for quantum communication, and the optical structure of the QKDT and QET is determined by using three polarization-maintaining methods. The optical configurations of the QKDT and QET are introduced, and the polarization-maintaining methods are described in detail. The final polarization extinction ratios of the QKDT and QET at wavelengths of 850 nm and 810 nm are better than 500:1, which provides critical technical support for realizing the scientific goals of Micius.

Monomer sequence controllable syntheses of copolymers, including copolyesters, remain a challenge in polymer science. Although alternating sequence-controlled copolymerization of O-carboxyanhydrides (OCAs) can be achieved via using syndioselective initiators, the alternating copolymerization of lactic acid-derived O-carboxyanhydride (LacOCA) with other monomers still suffers from a lack of highly syndioselective initiators. In this work, a highly syndioselective system for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of LacOCA was achieved using a bulky amine tris(phenolate) hafnium alkoxide initiator with a high Pr value of 0.91. However, the stereoselectivities of amine tris(phenolate) hafnium alkoxide initiators for the ROP of malic acid O-carboxyanhydride (MalOCA) change to be modestly or lowly isoselective. Interestingly, despite the different stereoselectivities of this system for the two different monomers, the high syndioselectivity of the initiator for the ROP of LacOCA and the low activity of MalOCA in the ROP allow comparatively high rates of cross-propagation; consequently, the ring-opening alternating copolymerization (ROAP) of LacOCA and MalOCA was achieved successfully.

A series of mononuclear salen-sodium anions, as the first examples, were synthesized with tetra-alkyl ammonium as a counterpart cation. These complexes are efficient catalysts for the isoselective ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide; the molecular weights of polymers are under control and molecular weight distributions are narrow when five equivalents of BnOH is used as an initiator. The best isoselectivity value of Pm = 0.82 was achieved at -70 °C. The experimental results together with a density functional theory calculation show that a ligand-assisted activated monomer mechanism is more reasonable than an activated monomer mechanism for this system.

Hexokinase is a rate-limiting enzyme that plays pivotal roles in glucose homeostasis and energy metabolism via glucose (Glc) phosphorylation and Glc signaling mediation. Previous investigations have revealed the modulatory role of Hexokinase (Hex) genes involved in proper glucose regulation during insect diapause and embryo development, whereas whether it functions in insect fecundity remains largely unknown. We aimed to explore the relationship between Triazophos (TZP)-induced Hex-1 and fecundity of female Nilaparvata lugens. In this study, Hex-1 expression were characterized at different developmental stages and in various tissues of N. lugens, with the highest expression registered in brain tissues and 5th instar nymph. The present findings indicated that TZP + dsHex-1 silencing significantly reduced protein synthesis, including the fat body and ovarian protein content of female adults. Meanwhile, the glycometabolism with respect to the soluble sugar, trehalose and glucose content in female adults were strikingly influenced as a result of Hex-1 knockdown. The relative transcript level of Hex-1, vitellogenin (NlVg) and vitellogenin receptor (NlVgR) considerably decreased in TZP + dsHex-1 treated females compared to TZP and TZP + dsGFP-treated groups. More importantly, TZP + dsHex-1 silencing led to reduced number of eggs laid and vitellogenin (Vg) accumulation as well as retarded ovary development compared with TZP-treated and TZP + dsGFP-treated groups. Taken together, it is proposed that Hex-1 implicates in N. lugens fecundity by exerting profound effects on glycometabolism, protein sythesis and NlVg expression.

Simple and rapid detection of DNA single base mismatch or point mutation is of great significance for the diagnosis, treatment, and detection of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in genetic diseases. Homogeneous mutation assays with fast hybridization kinetics and amplified discrimination signals facilitate the automatic detection. Herein we report a quick and cost-effective assay for SNP analysis with a fluorescent single-labeled DNA probe. This convenient strategy is based on the efficient quenching effect and the preferential binding of graphene oxide (GO) to ssDNA over dsDNA. Further, a cationic comb-type copolymer (CCC), poly(l-lysine)-graft-dextran (PLL-g-Dex), significantly accelerates DNA hybridization and strand-exchange reaction, amplifying the effective distinction of the kinetic barrier between a perfect matched DNA and a mismatched DNA. Moreover, in vitro experiments indicate that RAW 264.7 cells cultured on PLL-g-Dex exhibits excellent survival and proliferation ability, which makes this mismatch detection strategy highly sensitive and practical.
