RESUMO

A lack of available information on heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems can affect the performance of data-driven fault-tolerant control (FTC) models. This study proposed an in situ selective incremental calibration (ISIC) strategy. Faults were introduced into the indoor air (Ttz1) thermostat and supply air temperature (Tsa) and chilled water supply air temperature (Tchws) sensors of a central air-conditioning system. The changes in the system performance after FTC were evaluated. Then, we considered the effects of the data quality, data volume, and variable number on the FTC results. For the Ttz1 thermostat and Tsa sensor, the system energy consumption was reduced by 2.98% and 3.72% with ISIC, respectively, and the predicted percentage dissatisfaction was reduced by 0.67% and 0.63%, respectively. Better FTC results were obtained using ISIC when the Ttz1 thermostat had low noise, a 7-day data volume, or sufficient variables and when the Tsa and Tchws sensors had low noise, a 14-day data volume, or limited variables.

Reassortment can introduce one or more gene segments of influenza A viruses (IAVs) into another, resulting in novel subtypes. Since 2013, a new outbreak of human highly pathogenic avian influenza has emerged in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and South-Central regions of China. In this study, using Anhui province as an example, we discuss the possible impact of H7N9 IAVs on future influenza epidemics through a series of gene reassortment events. Sixty-one human H7N9 isolates were obtained from five outbreaks in Anhui province from 2013 to 2019. Bioinformatics analyses revealed that all of them were characterized by low pathogenicity and high human or mammalian tropism and had introduced novel avian influenza A virus (AIV) subtypes such as H7N2, H7N6, H9N9, H5N6, H6N6, and H10N6 through gene reassortment. In reassortment events, Anhui isolates may donate one or more segments of HA, NA, and the six internal protein-coding genes for the novel subtype AIVs. Our study revealed that H7N9, H9N2, and H5N1 can serve as stable and persistent gene pools for AIVs in the YRD and South-Central regions of China. Novel AIV subtypes might be generated continuously by reassortment. These AIVs may have obtained human-type receptor-binding abilities from their donors and prefer binding to them, which can cause human epidemics through accidental spillover infections. Facing the continual threat of emerging avian influenza, constant monitoring of AIVs should be conducted closely for agricultural and public health.

Due to energy constraints and people's increasing requirements for indoor thermal comfort, improving energy efficiency while ensuring thermal comfort has become the focus of research in the design and operation of HVAC systems. This study took office rooms with few people occupying them in Wuhan as the research object. The EnergyPlus-Fluent co-simulation method was used to study the impact of 12 forms of air distribution on the thermal environment and air-conditioner energy consumption. The results indicate that 3 m/s supply air velocity and 45° supply air angle are more suitable for the case model in this study. The EnergyPlus-Fluent co-simulation method used in this paper provides a reference for the study of indoor environments in offices with few people occupying them.

BACKGROUND: Novel avian influenza viruses (AIVs) of H7N9, H10N8, and H5N6 are currently circulating in China's poultry flocks, occasionally infecting human and other mammals. Human infected AIV H5N6 in China during 2014-2015 is believed to be a triple reassortant originated from H6N6 and two clades of H5 viruses. The current report suggests that its reassortment history is more complicated. METHODS: Genomes of human infected isolates of AIV H5N6 were searched from the NCBI Influenza Virus Sequence Database and the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data. Sequences shared high identities with each segment of their genomes were obtained through the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool. Alignments were done by mafft-7.037-win32 program; 8 large-scale and then 8 gradually converged phylogenetic trees were constructed by using MEGA5.1/5.2/6.0 Software. RESULTS: The events that each segment of the genomes of human infected AIV H5N6 isolates circulated in China had evolved into its current status might have happened before 2013, and so were they then reassorted into the epidemic AIV H5N6. A/Guangzhou/39715/2014(H5N6) and A/Sichuan/26221/2014(H5N6) had their six internal segments (PB2, PB1, PA, NP, NEP, and M) in common, and were reassorted from AIVs H5N1 in the same period and same region as that of HA, while A/Yunnan/0127/2015(H5N6) derived its six internal segments from AIV H9N2 that has been prevalent in Eastern China since 2008. CONCLUSIONS: AIV H5N6 isolates established from both human and poultry in China during 2014-2015 were heterogeneous; both AIVs H5N1 and H9N2 were involved in the reassortment of AIV H5N6 in China.

OBJECTIVES: Dog-mediated human rabies remains an important public health problem in China. In this study, we aimed to understand the spatiotemporal variation of rabies and examine its nonmedical ecological factors. METHODS: In this study, we used the annual incidence data for rabies at the province level in China to describe the incidence trends for the period 2004-2019 and used a Bayesian hierarchical spatiotemporal model to determine the impacts of environmental, economic, and demographic factors. RESULTS: From 2004 to 2019, there were 26,593 cases reported in 31 provinces in Mainland China, and the annual incidence increased from 0.02 per 100,000 in 2004 to 0.14 in 2007, substantially decreased in 2008, and was gradually declining thereafter. Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, and Hainan were four high-risk provinces, and Yunnan and Anhui provinces showed an increased risk in 2018 and 2019. Temperature and per capita gross domestic product were significantly positively correlated with the disease risk. The standardized morbidity ratio of rabies is likely to increase by 28% (relative risk: 1.28, 95% credible interval: 1.13-1.36) for every 1°C rise in temperature, and 17% (relative risk: 1.17, 95% credible interval: 1.01-1.34) for every 10,000 yuan increase in per capita gross domestic product. CONCLUSION: In most provinces in China, the risk of rabies has been reduced to a persistently low level. However, the progress of rabies control in six provinces have been less than satisfactory. The study highlights interventions, such as enhancing animal vaccination need to be implemented in these priority areas.

Trace levels of antibiotics were frequently found in drinking-water, leading a growing concern that drinking-water is an important exposure source to antibiotics in humans. In this study, we investigated antibiotics in tap water and well water in two rural residential areas in Eastern China to assess the related human health exposure risks in drinking-water. Twenty-seven antibiotics were analyzed using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The average daily dose (ADD) and the health risk quotient (HRQ) for exposure to antibiotics in humans were evaluated using 10000 times of Monte Carlo simulations. Ten antibiotics were detected in drinking-water samples, with the maximum concentrations of antibiotic mixture of 8.29 ng/L in tap water and 2.95 ng/L in well water, respectively. Macrolides and sulfonamides were the predominant contaminants and showed the seasonality. Azithromycin had the highest detection frequencies (79.71-100%), followed by roxithromycin (25.71-100%) and erythromycin (21.43-86.96%). The estimated ADD and HRQ for human exposure to antibiotic mixture through drinking-water was less than 0.01 µg/kg/day and 0.01, respectively, which varied over sites, water types, seasons and sex. Ingestion route was more important than dermal contact route (10-6 to 10-4 µg/kg/day magnitude vs. 10-11 to 10-8 µg/kg/day magnitude). Macrolides also contributed mainly to health exposure risks to antibiotics through drinking-water, whose HRQ accounted for 46% to 67% of the total HRQs. Although the individual antibiotic and their combined effects contributed to acceptable health risks for human, the long-term exposure patterns to low-dose antibiotics in drinking-water should not be ignored.

IMPORTANCE: Our study revealed the spatial interaction between humanized ACE2 and pseudovirus expressing Spike, emphasizing the role of type 2 innate lymphoid cells during the initial phase of viral infection. These findings provide a foundation for the development of mucosal vaccines and other treatment approaches for both pre- and post-infection management of coronavirus disease 2019.

The total number of cumulative cases and deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 is still increasing worldwide. Although many countries have actively implemented vaccination strategies to curb the epidemic, there is no specific efficient therapeutic drug for this virus to effectively reduce deaths. Therefore, the underappreciated macromolecular compounds have become the spotlight of research. Furthermore, the medicinal compounds in plants that provide myriad possibilities to treat human diseases have become of utmost importance. Experience indicates that Traditional Chinese medicine effectively treats SARS and has been used for treating patients with COVID-19 in China. As one of the world's oldest herbal remedies, licorice is used for treating patients with all stages of COVID-19. Glycyrrhizic acid (GA), the main active compound in licorice, has been proven effective in killing the SARS virus. Meanwhile, as a natural plant molecule, GA can also directly target important protein structures of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and inhibit the replication of SARS-CoV-2. In this review, we summarized the immune synergy of GA and its potential role in treating COVID-19 complications. Besides, we reviewed its anti-inflammatory effects on the immune system and its positive effects in cooperation with various drugs to fight against COVID-19 and its comorbidities. The purpose of this review is to elucidate and suggest that GA can be used as a potential drug during COVID-19 treatment.

Bismuth telluride has been the only commercial thermoelectric candidate, but the n-type sintered material lags well behind the p-type one in the zT value, which severely limits the further development of thermoelectrics. Here, we report a promising technique named hot-stacked deformation to effectively improve the thermoelectric properties of n-type Bi2Te2.79Se0.21 + 0.067 wt % BiCl3 materials based on zone-melting ingots. It is found that a high grain alignment is maintained during the plastic deformation and the carrier concentration is properly optimized owing to the donor-like effect, leading to an enhanced power factor. Moreover, the lattice thermal conductivity is obviously suppressed due to the emerged phonon scattering centers of dense grain boundaries and dislocations. These effects synergistically yield a maximum zT value of 1.38 and an average zTave of 1.18 between 300 and 500 K in the hot-stacked deformed sample, which is approximately 42% higher than those of the zone-melting ingots.

Cardiac injury is a common complication of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. In this study, we aimed to reveal the association of cardiac injury with coagulation dysfunction. We enrolled 181 consecutive patients who were hospitalized with COVID-19, and studied the clinical characteristics and outcome of these patients. Cardiac biomarkers high-sensitivity troponin I (hs-cTnI), myohemoglobin and creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB) were assessed in all patients. The clinical outcomes were defined as hospital discharge or death. The median age of the study cohort was 55 (IQR, 46-65) years, and 102 (56.4%) were males. Forty-two of the 181 patients (23.2%) had cardiac injury. Old age, high leukocyte count, and high levels of aspartate transaminase (AST), D-dimer and serum ferritin were significantly associated with cardiac injury. Multivariate regression analysis revealed old age and elevated D-dimer levels as being strong risk predictors of in-hospital mortality. Interleukin 6 (IL6) levels were comparable in patients with or without cardiac injury. Serial observations of coagulation parameters demonstrated highly synchronous alterations of D-dimer along with progression to cardiac injury. Cardiac injury is a common complication of COVID-19 and is an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality. Old age, high leukocyte count, and high levels of AST, D-dimer and serum ferritin are significantly associated with cardiac injury, whereas IL6 are not. Therefore, the pathogenesis of cardiac injury in COVID-19 may be primarily due to coagulation dysfunction along with microvascular injury.

Extensive clinical efforts have been made to control the severity of dengue diseases; however, the dengue morbidity and mortality have not declined. Dengue virus (DENV) can infect and cause systemic damage in many organs, resulting in organ failure. Here, we present a novel report showing a tailored stem-cell-based therapy that can aid in viral clearance and rescue liver cells from further damage during dengue infection. We administered a combination of hematopoietic stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells in a DENV-infected BALB/c mouse model and found that delivery of this cell cocktail had improved their liver functions, confirmed by hematology, histopathology, and next-generation sequencing. These stem and progenitor cells can differentiate into target cells and repair the damaged tissues. In addition, the regime can regulate endothelial proliferation and permeability, modulate inflammatory reactions, enhance extracellular matrix production and angiogenesis, and secrete an array of growth factors to create an enhanced milieu for cell reparation. No previous study has been published on the treatment of dengue infection using stem cells combination. In conclusion, dengue-induced liver damage was rescued by administration of stem cell therapy, with less apoptosis and improved repair and regeneration in the dengue mouse model.

The new type of pneumonia caused by the SARS-CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) has been declared as a global public health concern by WHO. As of April 3, 2020, more than 1,000,000 human infections have been diagnosed around the world, which exhibited apparent person-to-person transmission characteristics of this virus. The capacity of vertical transmission in SARS-CoV-2 remains controversial recently. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is now confirmed as the receptor of SARS-CoV-2 and plays essential roles in human infection and transmission. In present study, we collected the online available single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data to evaluate the cell specific expression of ACE2 in maternal-fetal interface as well as in multiple fetal organs. Our results revealed that ACE2 was highly expressed in maternal-fetal interface cells including stromal cells and perivascular cells of decidua, and cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast in placenta. Meanwhile, ACE2 was also expressed in specific cell types of human fetal heart, liver and lung, but not in kidney. And in a study containing series fetal and post-natal mouse lung, we observed ACE2 was dynamically changed over the time, and ACE2 was extremely high in neonatal mice at post-natal day 1~3. In summary, this study revealed that the SARS-CoV-2 receptor was widely spread in specific cell types of maternal-fetal interface and fetal organs. And thus, both the vertical transmission and the placenta dysfunction/abortion caused by SARS-CoV-2 need to be further carefully investigated in clinical practice.

A new type of pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks recently in China and spreads into many other countries. This disease, named as COVID-19, is similar to patients infected by SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, and nearly 20% of patients developed severe condition. Cardiac injury is a prevalent complication of severe patients, exacerbating the disease severity in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the key host cellular receptor of SARS-CoV-2, has been identified in multiple organs, but its cellular distribution in human heart is not illuminated clearly. This study performed the first state-of-art single cell atlas of adult human heart, and revealed that pericytes with high expression of ACE2 might act as the target cardiac cell of SARS-CoV-2. The pericytes injury due to virus infection may result in capillary endothelial cells dysfunction, inducing microvascular dysfunction. And patients with basic heart failure disease showed increased ACE2 expression at both mRNA and protein levels, meaning that if infected by the virus these patients may have higher risk of heart attack and critically ill condition. The finding of this study explains the high rate of severe cases among COVID-19 patients with basic cardiovascular disease; and these results also perhaps provide important reference to clinical treatment of cardiac injury among severe patients infected by SARS-CoV-2.

Background Alterations in serum creatinine levels delay the identification of severe cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury. To provide timely diagnosis, novel predictive tools should be investigated. Methods and Results This prospective observational study consists of a screening cohort (n=204) and a validation cohort (n=198) from 2 centers from our hospital. Thirty-two inflammatory cytokines were measured via a multiplex cytokine assay. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression was conducted to select the cytokine signatures of severe cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury. Afterwards, the significant candidates including interferon-γ, interleukin-16, and MIP-1α (macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha) were integrated into the logistic regression model to construct a predictive model. The predictive accuracy of the model was evaluated in these 2 cohorts. The cytokine-based model yielded decent performance in both the screening (C-statistic: 0.87, Brier 0.10) and validation cohorts (C-statistic: 0.86, Brier 0.11). Decision curve analysis revealed that the cytokine-based model had a superior net benefit over both the clinical factor-based model and the established plasma biomarker-based model for predicting severe acute kidney injury. In addition, elevated concentrations of each cytokine were associated with longer mechanical ventilation times, intensive care unit stays, and hospital stays. They strongly predicted the risk of composite events (defined as treatment with renal replacement therapy and/or in-hospital death) (OR of the fourth versus the first quartile [95% CI]: interferon-γ, 27.78 [3.61-213.84], interleukin-16, 38.07 [4.98-291.07], and MIP-1α, 9.13 [2.84-29.33]). Conclusions Our study developed and validated a promising blood cytokine-based model for predicting severe acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery and identified prognostic biomarkers for assisting in outcome risk stratification.

Constructing a nanocomposite to introduce a coherent interface is an effective way to improve the property of thermoelectric material. Here, a series composites of Bi0.48Sb1.52Te3-x wt % Sb2Te3 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, and 1.0) were synthesized, where the hydrothermally prepared Sb2Te3 nanosheets were intimately wrapped in the solid-state-reacted Bi0.48Sb1.52Te3 matrix. The formation of a coherent interface was observed and confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy characterization. As the Sb2Te3 content was over 0.5 wt %, the carrier mobility could increase by 26%, while the carrier concentration decreased by 9% compared to those of the pure matrix at 300 K, enhancing the power factor to 40.1 µW/cm K2. Moreover, the Bi0.48Sb1.52Te3-0.5 wt % Sb2Te3 sample exhibited a reduced lattice thermal conductivity of 0.83 W/m K at room temperature, resulting from the strengthened phonon scattering by interfaces. Combined with the manipulations of both the electronic and thermal transport by constructing a coherent interface, a maximum ZT of 1.05 was obtained in the x = 0.5 composite at 300 K, and it was improved by 20% compared with the result of the Bi0.48Sb1.52Te3 matrix.

AIMS: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly around the globe, causing significant morbidity and mortality. This study aims to describe electrocardiographic (ECG) characteristics of COVID-19 patients and to identify ECG parameters that are associated with cardiac involvement. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study included patients who were hospitalized with COVID-19 diagnosis and had cardiac biomarker assessments and simultaneous 12-lead surface ECGs. Sixty-three hospitalized patients (median 53 [inter-quartile range, 43-65] years, 76.2% male) were enrolled, including patients with (n = 23) and without (n = 40) cardiac injury. Patients with cardiac injury were older, had more pre-existing co-morbidities, and had higher mortality than those without cardiac injury. They also had prolonged QTc intervals and more T wave changes. Logistic regression model identified that the number of abnormal T waves (odds ratio (OR), 2.36 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.38-4.04], P = 0.002) and QTc interval (OR, 1.31 [95% CI, 1.03-1.66], P = 0.027) were independent indicators for cardiac injury. The combination model of these two parameters along with age could well discriminate cardiac injury (area the under curve 0.881, P < 0.001) by receiver operating characteristic analysis. Cox regression model identified that the presence of T wave changes was an independent predictor of mortality (hazard ratio, 3.57 [1.40, 9.11], P = 0.008) after adjustment for age. CONCLUSIONS: In COVID-19 patients, presence of cardiac injury at admission is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Repolarization abnormalities on surface ECG such as abnormal T waves and prolonged QTc intervals are more common in patients with cardiac involvement and can help in further risk stratification.

Background: COVID-19 developed into a global pandemic in 2020 and poses challenges regarding the prevention and control capabilities of countries. A large number of inbound travelers from other regions could lead to a renewed outbreak of COVID-19 in the local regions. Globally, as a result of the imbalance in the control of the epidemic, all countries are facing the risk of a renewed COVID-19 outbreak brought about by travelers from epidemic areas. Therefore, studies on a proper management of the inbound travelers are urgent. Methods: We collected a total of 4,733,414 inbound travelers and 174 COVID-19 diagnosed patients in Yunnan province from 21 January 2020 to 20 February 2020. Data on place of origin, travel history, age, and gender, as well as whether they had suspected clinical manifestations for inbound travelers in Yunnan were collected. The impact of inbound travelers on the local epidemic was analyzed with a collinear statistical analysis and the effect of the control measures on the epidemic was evaluated with a sophisticated modeling approach. Results: Of the 174 COVID-19 patients, 60.9% were not from Yunnan, and 76.4% had a history of travel in Hubei. The amount of new daily cases in Yunnan was significant correlated with the number of inbound travelers from Hubei and suspected cases among them. Using Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered (SEIR) model analysis, we found that the prevention and control measures dropped the local R0 down to 1.07 in Yunnan province. Conclusions: Our preliminary analysis showed that the proper management of inbound travelers from outbreak areas has a significantly positive effect on the prevention and control of the virus. In the process of resettlement, some effective measures taken by Yunnan province may provide an important reference for preventing the renewed COVID-19 outbreak in other regions.

Phonon engineering is a core stratagem to improve the thermoelectric performance, and multi-scale defects are expected to scatter a broad range of phonons and compress the lattice thermal conductivity. Here, we demonstrate obviously enhanced thermoelectric properties in Bi0.48Sb1.52Te3 alloy by a hot-pressing texture method along the axial direction of a zone-melted ingot. It is found that a plastic deformation of grain refinement and rearrangement occurs during the textured pressing process. Although the obtained power factor is slightly decreased, a large amount of grain boundaries emerges in the textured samples and dense dislocations are observed around the boundaries and inside the grains. These additional phonon scattering centers can effectively scatter the low- and mid-frequency phonons, and the corresponding lattice thermal conductivity is significantly reduced to only 50% of that of zone-melted samples. Consequently, the maximum figure of merit (ZT) reaches 1.44 at 330 K and the average ZT (300-380 K) reaches 1.38. This study suggests that the simple hot-pressing texture technique is a promising method to significantly optimize the cooling capacity of Bi0.48Sb1.52Te3-based thermoelectric refrigeration.

There have been three major rabies epidemics in China since the 1950s. To gain more insights into the molecular epidemiology of rabies viruses (RVs) for the third (the current) epidemic, we isolated RV from dogs and humans in major endemic areas, and characterized these isolates genetically by sequencing the entire glycoprotein (G) gene and the G-L non-coding region. These sequences were also compared phylogenetically with RVs isolated in China during previous epidemics and those around the world. Comparison of the entire G genes among the Chinese isolates revealed up to 21.8% divergence at the nucleotide level and 17.8% at the amino acid level. The available Chinese isolates could be divided into two distinct clades, each of which could be further divided into six lineages. Viruses in clade I include most of the Chinese viruses as well as viruses from southeast Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The viruses in the other clade were found infrequently in China, but are closely related to viruses distributed worldwide among terrestrial animals. Interestingly, most of the viruses isolated during the past 10 years belong to lineage A viruses within clade I whereas most of the viruses isolated before 1996 belong to other lineages within clades I and II. Our results indicated that lineages A viruses have been predominant during the past 10 years and thus are largely responsible for the third and the current epidemic in China. Our results also suggested that the Chinese RV isolates in clade I share a common recent ancestor with those circulating in southeast Asia.
