RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The lips are one crucial determinant of facial attractiveness. Current studies investigating lip attractiveness were mostly conducted in Caucasians, and the results could not directly apply to Asians. Aside from lip proportions, lip contours play an important role in attractiveness but it is unclear how people perceive different lip contours. The aim of this study was to investigate the aesthetic perception of various lip shapes by Chinese to identify the most attractive lip morphology for women and men, respectively. METHODS: 303 Chinese participants were invited to rate the attractiveness of identical lip images with different contours and proportions in a young female and a young male. Stratified analyses were performed to assess the effect of gender, age and occupation on the preference of lip shapes. RESULTS: The lips that were rated to be most attractive had a flat upper vermilion border, an M-shaped oral fissure and a U-shaped lower vermilion border in both genders. Most respondents considered an upper-to-lower vermilion proportion of 1:1 to be more attractive, regardless of the gender of the lip models, and the lip thickness-to-width proportions of 1:2 and 1:2.5 were perceived most attractive for female and male, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study adds to our understanding of how lip contours contribute to attractiveness and that Chinese have distinctive aesthetic preferences for lip morphology, which possibly stem from racial characteristics and cultural differences. With such knowledge, practitioners may better tailor the treatment strategy when performing lip rejuvenation procedures. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The jawline and neck significantly influence facial aesthetics. Botulinum toxin and filler are highly favored as minimally invasive jawline rejuvenation procedures. However, little evidence exists on the age-related skin and superficial fat tissue transformations in healthy individuals to guide targeted interventions. METHODS: A quantitative sonographic assessment was conducted on 51 patients. Total soft tissue thickness (the skin and superficial fat compartments) was measured at eight sites along the jawline and four sites at the neck. Among them, 21 patients received botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) injections for jawline lift. Three-dimensional images and questionaries were obtained before and after the treatment. RESULTS: In this ultrasound study, total superficial soft tissue thickness decreased significantly from the prejowl sulcus to the lateral cheek, with the jowl showing the greatest thickness. Vertically, significant differences in thickness were noted between superior and inferior points, especially at the inferior prejowl sulcus for the middle-aged and the jowl for the elderly group when comparing across age groups. Soft tissue thickness at the neck decreased from zones 1 to 3, consistent in all age groups. BMI and age positively correlated with soft tissue thickness at the jawline and neck. Regarding BTX-A injections, participants described a pain-free injection process, of which 85.7% reported substantial aesthetic improvement and sharpening of the submental-cervical angle. CONCLUSIONS: This study quantified age-related changes in superficial soft tissues at the jawline and neck regions with ultrasound imaging. With aging, soft tissue thickness alters with high region-specificity. Tailoring interventions to the specific alterations within each age group can achieve optimal results with enhanced safety. This study provided a quantitative analysis of skin and superficial fat compartment thicknesses for the young, middle-aged, and elderly groups. This study illustrated how skin and superficial fat compartments change with age in a regionally specific manner for both the jawline and neck regions. This study revealed a positive association between BMI and age with skin and superficial fat tissue thicknesses, especially in areas like the jowl, submental, and neck. This study provided guidance for a safe and effective botulinum toxin. A injection method focusing on the injection depths and regions to achieve optimal jawline rejuvenation outcomes and patient experience. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional facial stereophotogrammetry, a convenient, noninvasive and highly reliable evaluation tool, has in recent years shown great potential in plastic surgery for preoperative planning and evaluating treatment efficacy. However, it requires manual identification of facial landmarks by trained evaluators to obtain anthropometric data, which takes much time and effort. Automatic 3D facial landmark localization has the potential to facilitate fast data acquisition and eliminate evaluator error. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to describe a novel deep-learning method based on dimension transformation and key-point detection for automated 3D perioral landmark annotation. METHODS: After transforming a 3D facial model into 2D images, High-Resolution Network is implemented for key-point detection. The 2D coordinates of key points are then mapped back to the 3D model using mathematical methods to obtain the 3D landmark coordinates. This program was trained with 120 facial models and validated in 50 facial models. RESULTS: Our approach achieved a satisfactory mean [standard deviation] accuracy of 1.30 [0.68] mm error in landmark detection with a mean processing time of 5.2 [0.21] seconds per model. Subsequent analysis based on these landmarks showed mean errors of 0.87 [1.02] mm for linear measurements and 5.62° [6.61°] for angular measurements. CONCLUSIONS: This automated 3D perioral landmarking method could serve as an effective tool that enables fast and accurate anthropometric analysis of lip morphology for plastic surgery and aesthetic procedures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The depressor anguli oris muscle (DAO) is a pivotal treatment target when creating a harmonic jawline. However, evidence of its live morphology remains scarce. OBJECTIVES: In this study we aimed to reevaluate the DAO with a facile ultrasound analysis and thereby guide safer and more effective botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injection. METHODS: A prospective ultrasound assessment was conducted in 41 patients. Morphology of the DAO and its relative position to neighboring structures were appraised at the ubiquitous facial landmark, the labiomandibular fold (LMF). Three-dimensional images were captured before and after the patient received the BTX-A injection based on sonographic evidence. RESULTS: The skin-to-muscle depths of the DAO on average (measured from the medial to lateral border) were 5.26, 5.61, and 8.42 mm. The DAO becomes thinner and wider from zone 1 to zone 3 (P < .001). Overlapping lengths of the DAO and the depressor labii inferioris increased from zone 1 to zone 3: 4.74, 9.68, 14.54 mm (P < .001). The medial border of the DAO was located at 4.33, 6.12, 8.90 mm medial to the LMF (zone 1-3), and no muscle fibers of the DAO were observed in zone 1 or zone 2 in nearly one-third of patients. Improvement of the mouth corner downturn angle upon receiving BTX-A injection at zones 2 and 3 were 88.3%, 32.3%, and 14.7% for the neutral, maximum smile, and down-turning mouth corner expressions. CONCLUSIONS: This work established an informative ultrasound portrait of the DAO and structures in the perioral region, which suggested the LMF as a convenient landmark for locating the DAO. Injection at the middle and lower thirds of the LMF at a 4- to 5-mm depth is recommended.

RESUMO

Taxol is widely used in cancer chemotherapy; however, the oral absorption of Taxol remains a formidable challenge. Since the intestinal p-glycoprotein (P-gp) mediated drug efflux is one of the primary causes, the development of P-gp inhibitor is emerging as a promising strategy to realize Taxol's oral delivery. Because P-gp exists in many tissues, the non-selective P-gp inhibitors would lead to toxicity. Correspondingly, a potent and intestine specific P-gp inhibitor would be an ideal solution to boost the oral absorption of Taxol and avoid exogenous toxicity. Herein, we would like to report a highly potent and intestine specific P-gp inhibitor to enable oral delivery of Taxol in high efficiency. Through a multicomponent reaction and post-modification, various benzofuran-fused-piperidine derivatives were achieved and the biological evaluation identified 16 c with potent P-gp inhibitory activity. Notably, 16 c was intestine specific and showed almost none absorption (F=0.82 %), but possessing higher efficacy than Encequidar to improve the oral absorption of Taxol. In MDA-MB-231 xenograft model, the oral administration of Taxol and 16 c showed high therapeutic efficiency and low toxicity, thus providing a valuable chemotherapy strategy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the second most common subtype of stroke, with high mortality and morbidity. At present, there are no effective 6-month prognostic markers, particularly for younger patients. The aim of this research was to construct a new valuable prognostic nomogram model incorporating haemoglobin levels for adult patients with ICH. METHODS: Patients aged between 18 and 50 presenting with intracerebral haemorrhage at the Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology between January 1st 2012 and December 31st 2018 were included in this retrospective study. Independent factors of prognosis were identified by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, and a new nomogram model was constructed and validated. The clinical value of the nomogram model was subsequently explored utilizing decision curve analysis and clinical impact curves. RESULTS: In total, 565 patients were enrolled in this study, 117 (20.7%) of whom developed an unfavourable prognosis. Infratentorial lesion (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.708, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.490-9.227; P = 0.005) was the most significant unfavourable outcome. Age ([aOR] = 1.054; 95% CI, 1.014-1.096; P = 0.008), hematoma volume (aOR = 1.014, 95% CI, 1.002-1.027; P = 0.024), haemoglobin (aOR = 0.981, 95% CI, 0.969-0.993; P = 0.002), blood glucose (aOR = 1.135, 95% CI, 1.037-1.241; P = 0.005) and NIHSS (aOR = 1.105, 95% CI, 1.069-1.141; P < 0.001) were independent risk factors. Based on these 6 factors, the nomogram can be employed to predict early functional prognosis with high accuracy (AUC 0.791). Decision curve analysis and clinical impact curves showed an increased net benefit for utilizing the nomogram. CONCLUSION: The haemoglobin level at admission may be an easily overlooked factor in clinical work. This new nomogram model could be a promising and convenient tool to predict the early functional prognosis of adults with ICH. More prospective multicentre studies are needed to validate these findings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous evidence demonstrated that several biomarkers involved in the pathological process of coagulation/hemostasis dysfunction, impairment of brain vascular integrity and inflammation are associated with hematoma expansion (HE) after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We aimed to explore whether there were unreported laboratory biomarkers associated with HE that were readily and commonly available in clinical practice. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive acute ICH patients from 2012 to 2020 with admission laboratory tests and baseline and follow-up computed tomography (CT) scans. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were used to evaluate associations between conventional laboratory indicators and HE. The results were verified in a prospective validation cohort. The relationship of candidate biomarker and 3-month outcomes was also investigated and mediation analysis was undertaken to determine causal associations among candidate biomarker, HE and outcome. RESULTS: Of 734 ICH patients, 163 (22.2%) presented HE. Among the included laboratory indicators, higher direct bilirubin (DBil) was associated with HE (adjusted odds ratio [OR] of per 1.0 µmol/L change 1.082; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.011-1.158). DBil >5.65 µmol/L was a predictor of HE in validation cohort. Higher DBil was also associated with poor 3-month outcomes. The mediation analysis indicated that the association of higher DBil and poor outcomes was partially mediated by HE. CONCLUSIONS: DBil is a predictor of HE and poor 3-month outcomes after ICH. DBil's metabolic process and involvement in the pathological mechanism of HE are likely to contribute to the association between DBil and HE. Interventions targeting DBil to improve post-ICH prognosis may be meaningful and worthy of further exploration.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Immune checkpoint inhibitors have advanced immunotherapy for melanoma patients. Objective: This study evaluates efficacy and safety of ipilimumab and nivolumab combination (IN) for melanoma brain metastases (MBM) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Literature search was conducted in electronic databases and studies were included if they reported efficacy and safety of IN in MBM patients or prognostic information related to brain metastases. Outcomes evaluated were objective response rate (ORR), complete remission/stable disease/progressive disease rates, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), incidence rates of adverse events, and hazard ratios of disease progression or mortality between IN-treated patients with and without brain metastasis. RESULTS: Intracranial ORR was higher in IN-treated MBM patients than with control therapies (nivolumab or ipilimumab plus fotemustine). IN treatment led to longer PFS and OS in than control treatments. Five-year OS of IN-treated MBM patients was up to 51% compared to 34% for nivolumab. Outcomes were better for treatment naïve and asymptomatic patients. Whereas many studies reported significantly higher mortality or progression risk with IN treatment in MBM patients compared to non-MBM melanoma patients, many others did not find this risk significant. Incidence of grade 3/4 adverse events in IN-treated MBM patients was: diarrhea or colitis (16%), hepatitis (15%), rash (8%), increased alanine transaminase (8%), increased aspartate aminotransferase (7%), increased lipase (6%), increased amylase (4%), fatigue (3%), hypophysitis (2%), pneumonitis (2%), headache (2%), nausea or vomiting (1%), and neutropenia (1%). CONCLUSION: IN is an efficacious and safer treatment option for MBM patients, especially for asymptomatic and treatment naïve patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The non-invasive three-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry is widely used in anthropometry for medical purpose. Yet, few studies have assessed its reliability on measuring the perioral region. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide a standardized 3D anthropometric protocol for the perioral region. METHODS: 38 female and 12 male Asians were recruited (mean age 31.6 ± 9.6 years). Two sets of 3D images using the VECTRA 3D imaging system were acquired for each subject, and two measurement sessions for each image were performed independently by two raters. 25 landmarks were identified, and 28 linear, 2 curvilinear, 9 angular and 4 areal measurements were evaluated for intrarater, interrater, and intramethod reliability. RESULTS: Our results showed high reliability of 3D imaging-based perioral anthropometry by mean absolute difference (0.57 and 0.57 unit), technical error measurement (0.51 and 0.55 unit), relative error of measurement (2.18% and 2.44%), relative technical error of measurement (2.02% and 2.34%), and intraclass correlation coefficient (0.98 and 0.98) for intrarater 1 and intrarater 2 reliability; respectively 0.78 unit, 0.74 unit, 3.26%, 3.06% and 0.97 for interrater reliability; and respectively 1.01 unit, 0.97 unit, 4.74%, 4.57% and 0.95 for intramethod reliability. CONCLUSIONS: This standardized protocol utilizing 3D surface imaging technologies are feasible and highly reliable in perioral assessment. It could be further applied for diagnostic purpose, surgical planning and therapeutic effect evaluation in clinical practice in relation to perioral morphologies. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Existing evaluation tools of tear trough deformity are based on subjective impression of clinicians. More accurate quantitative assessment methods are needed. This study aimed to propose a quantitative three-dimensional assessment method for the tear trough deformity in comparison with the Barton's grading system and apply it to the efficacy evaluation of orbital septum fat transposition. METHODS: 117 healthy Chinese adults (234 eyes) were enrolled and divided into four groups according to the Barton's grading system. Three-dimensional facial images were captured using Vectra H1 handheld camera. 6 anthropometric landmarks were identified on each eye and 8 linear measurements were generated accordingly. Intra-observer reliability was determined and measurements were compared between groups. Pre- and post-operative three-dimensional measurements were compared in 19 patients who received lower blepharoplasty with orbital septum fat transposition. RESULTS: The severity of tear trough was positively correlated with age (P < 0.001) but not BMI (P = 0.145) or gender (P = 0.280). Intra-rater reliability of the 8 linear measurements was excellent except for the vertical distance between the palpebrale inferioris margin and the tear trough below the pupillary center. Intergroup comparison showed that the horizontal distance between the lateral end of tear trough (P < 0.001) and medial canthus and the sagittal vector from tear trough point toward eyelid bag point (P = 0.009) increased with grade, while the vertical distance from mid-pupil to palpebrale inferioris margin decreased gradually (P = 0.001). Orbital septum fat transposition significantly improved the tear trough deformity as assessed by these three-dimensional measurements. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated a novel quantitative evaluation method of the tear trough deformity using three-dimensional stereophotogrammetry and proved it to be valid and reliable. It showed good value of clinical application and might help with periorbital rejuvenation planning and outcome assessment. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry has been widely used in anthropometry for both medical and esthetic purposes. However, no studies have assessed its reliability on measuring the lower eyelid by 3D imaging. This study aimed to establish a standardized 3D anthropometric protocol for lower eyelid region and validate its reliability. METHODS: Fifty-eight participants (116 eyes) were recruited with mean age of 39.14 ± 11.25 years. Two sets of VECTRA 3D images were taken for each subject, and each set of images was individually measured twice by two raters. Twenty-seven landmarks were identified in the lower eyelid region, and then 19 linear, 4 curvilinear, 7 angular and 2 areal metrics were assessed for intrarater, interrater and intramethod reliability. RESULTS: High reliability was found in this 3D imaging-based lower eyelid anthropometry. The mean absolute difference within 2 intrarater measurement were 0.22 and 0.08 units, the technical errors measurement were 0.31 and 0.15 units, the relative errors of measurement were 0.90% and 0.31%, the relative technical errors of measurement were 1.53% and 0.64%, and the intra-group correlation coefficient was 0.99 and 0.99. The results for interrater measurement were 0.53 units, 0.59 units, 2.94%, 3.41% and 0.96, and for intramethod measurement were 0.71 units, 0.77 units, 4.12%, 4.05% and 0.95 units, respectively. CONCLUSION: 3D stereophotogrammetry is reliable for lower eyelid anthropometry. The standardized protocol can be further applied for many purposes such as lower eyelid aging evaluation, surgical related assessment and periocular rejuvenation plan. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adolescents constitute a unique group of labia minora hypertrophy patients, but the necessity and benefits of labiaplasty for adolescents remain controversial. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to summarize the surgical indications, the details of the treatment procedure, postoperative complications, and therapeutic outcomes of labiaplasty in the adolescent population. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of adolescent patients aged <18 years old who underwent labiaplasty between January 2016 and May 2022. Patient characteristics, surgical method, concomitant procedures, procedure side, operative time, complications, and follow-up data were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 12 patients aged <18 years were included in this study. All procedures were performed for functional reasons. The mean [standard deviation] operative time was 61.75 [20.77] minutes (range, 38-114 minutes). Unilateral labia minora hematoma within 24 hours occurred in 2 of the 12 patients (16.7%) and surgical evacuations were performed immediately. All patients were followed up electronically at 42.33 [16.88] months (range, 14-67 months). Notably, 83.33% (10/12) of patients reported being very satisfied, and 16.67% (2/12) of patients were satisfied. There was no patient dissatisfaction. Preoperative discomfort was completely resolved in 9 patients (75.00%) and significantly improved in 3 patients (25.00%). Furthermore, no patients indicated that symptoms were not improved or made worse. CONCLUSIONS: In the adolescent population, severe hypertrophy of the labia minora and the clitoral hood will cause discomfort, affecting the quality of life and mental health. Therefore, labiaplasty is a safe and effective procedure in adolescents to improve genital appearance and quality of life.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Establishing facial anthropometric reference values is essential for diagnosis of deformity, assessment of aging, and planning for aesthetic and reconstructive treatment. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide detailed perioral anthropometric data in relation to sex and age in Chinese persons with a standardized 3-dimensional protocol. METHODS: Three-dimensional facial photographs were obtained of 60 male and 64 female healthy Chinese participants ages 20 to 35 and 50 to 65 years old, as well as 2 acromegaly patients, with the VECTRA 3D camera. A standardized evaluation was performed to locate 37 perioral landmarks and generate corresponding measurements, including 26 linear distances, 5 ratios, 2 curvatures, 4 areas, and 9 angles. Measurements of different age groups and of different genders were compared, as were measurements of healthy individuals with those of acromegaly patients. RESULTS: Sex discrepancy was noted in philtrum length, width, and area, lip width, and vermilion and cutaneous upper lip area; these were larger in Chinese males than females. However, vermilion heights were similar in both genders. With age, philtrum and cutaneous upper lip height and area, lip width, and angles related to cupid's bow significantly increased, whereas vermilion height and mouth corner angles decreased, and philtrum width, vermilion areas, and lip protrusion remained unchanged. Compared to healthy Chinese patients, acromegaly patients had a larger value for most measurements. Perioral rejuvenation based on detailed 3-dimensional anthropometry showed good results. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese males have wider but not thicker lips than females, and aging features thin, flattened, and wide vermilions with a lengthened philtrum in both genders. These data can serve as a reference standard for disease diagnosis, aesthetic procedures, and reconstructive lip surgeries.

RESUMO

Alzheimer's disease (AD), an age-dependent neurodegenerative disorder, is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease worldwide. The primary pathological hallmarks of AD are the deposition of ß-amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Autophagy, a pathway of clearing damaged organelles, macromolecular aggregates, and long-lived proteins via lysosomal degradation, has emerged as critical for proteostasis in the central nervous system (CNS). Studies have demonstrated that defective autophagy is strongly implicated in AD pathogenesis. Transcription factor EB (TFEB), a master transcriptional regulator of autophagy, enhances the expression of related genes that control autophagosome formation, lysosome function, and autophagic flux. The study of TFEB has greatly increased over the last decade, and the dysfunction of TFEB has been reported to be strongly associated with the pathogenesis of many neurodegenerative disorders, including AD. Here, we delineate the basic understanding of TFEB dysregulation involved in AD pathogenesis, highlighting the existing work that has been conducted on TFEB-mediated autophagy in neurons and other nonneuronal cells in the CNS. Additionally, we summarize the small molecule compounds that target TFEB-regulated autophagy involved in AD therapy. RESUMO

Periodic pattern formation on the cellular and tissue scale is an important process and has been extensively studied. However, periodic pattern formation at the subcellular level still remains poorly understood. The C. elegans epidermis displays a highly ordered parallel stripe pattern as part of its subcellular structure, making it an ideal model to study the formation and reorganization of periodic patterns within cells. Here, we show that the initial formation of periodic striped patterns in the C. elegans epidermis is dependent on actin and spectrin, and requires the apical membrane attachment structures for maintenance. The periodic subcellular structures do not accommodate cell growth by continuously making new stripes. Instead, they increase the number of stripes by going through one round of uniform duplication, which is independent of the increasing epidermal length or the developmental cycles. This long-range synchronized reorganization of subcellular structures is achieved by physical links established by extracellular collagens together with extension forces generated from epidermal cell growth. Our studies uncover a novel strategy employed by evenly spaced and interlinked subcellular structures to maintain their integrity and equidistribution during cell growth and tissue development.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: SMASH-U is a systematic aetiological classification system for intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) proven to be a predictor of post-ICH haematoma expansion and mortality. However, its role in predicting functional outcome remains elusive. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether SMASH-U is associated with long-term functional outcome after ICH and improves the accuracy of prediction when added to max-ICH score. METHODS: Consecutive acute ICH patients from 2012 to 2018 from the neurology department of Tongji Hospital were enrolled. ICH aetiology was classified according to the SMASH-U system. The association of SMASH-U with 12-month functional outcome after ICH and the predictive value were evaluated. RESULTS: Of 1938 ICH patients, the aetiology of 1295 (66.8%) patients were classified as hypertension, followed by amyloid angiopathy (n = 250, 12.9%), undetermined (n = 159, 8.2%), structural lesions (n = 149, 7.7%), systemic disease (n = 74, 3.8%) and medication (n = 11, 0.6%). The baseline characteristics were different among the six aetiologies. In multivariate analysis, SMASH-U was proven to be a predictor of 12-month unfavourable functional outcome. When adding the SMASH-U system, the predictive performance of max-ICH score was improved (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve from 0.802 to 0.812, p = 0.010) and the predictive accuracy was enhanced (integrated discrimination improvement [IDI]: 1.60%, p < 0.001; continuous net reclassification improvement [NRI]: 28.16%, p < 0.001; categorical NRI: 3.34%, p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: SMASH-U predicted long-term unfavourable functional outcomes after acute ICH and improved the accuracy of prediction when added to max-ICH score. Integrating the aetiology to a score model to predict the post-ICH outcome may be meaningful and worthy of further exploration.

RESUMO

To explore the pollution characteristics of metals in household dust in China and their exposure to children, this study searched peer-reviewed papers published during 1980-2020 and analyzed 30 eligible papers screened under the per-decided strategy. We evaluated the sample-weighted concentration (SWC) of each metal, explored the sources of metals, and presented the quantitative description of spatial-temporary characteristics and children exposure to 13 metals with multi-route under a general living scenario. The results showed the concentrations of 13 metals with a range of 0.89-29 090.19 mg/kg. The SWC of Cd in household dust from rural areas was 3.29 times of that from urban areas, while the SWC of Ni from urban areas was 3.71 times of that from rural areas. The results showed that four principal components were extracted, and the cumulative contribution rate reached 79.127%. The exposure dose of 13 metals to children aged 2-3 years was presented with the highest by ingestion. Metals such as Fe, Zn, and Mn posed inevitable health risk to children with high exposure. Countermeasures should be carried out to minimize the children exposure to metals in household dust urgently, such as the establishment of environmental health standard for household dust.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Significant efforts have been directed toward addressing the adverse health effects of particulate matter, while few data exist to evaluate indoor exposure nationwide in China. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate dwellings particulate matter levels in the twelve cities in China and provide large data support for policymakers to accelerate the legislative process. METHODS: The current study was based on the CIEHS 2018 study and conducted in 12 cities of China. A total of 2128 air samples were collected from 610 residential households during the summer and winter. Both PM10 and PM2.5 were detected with a light-scattering dust meter in both the living room and bedroom. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test was performed to evaluate the correlations between PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations and both sampling season and site. Ratios of the living room to bedroom were calculated to evaluate the particulate matter variation between rooms. Hierarchical clustering was used to probe the question of whether the concentration varies between cities throughout China. RESULTS: The geometric means of the PM2.5 in living rooms and bedrooms were 39.80 and 36.55 µg/m3 in the summer, and 70.97 and 67.99 µg/m3 in the winter, respectively. In the summer, approximately 70 % of indoor dwelling PM2.5 exceeded the limit of 25 µg/m3, and for PM10 approximately 60 % of dwellings demonstrated levels higher than 50 µg/m3; the corresponding values were over 90 % and 80 % in winter, respectively. In Shijiazhuang, Lanzhou, Luoyang and Qingdao, the geometric means of the PM2.5 concentrations were observed to be 1.5 to 4.3 times higher during winter than during summer; similar concentrations in summer and winter were observed in Harbin, Wuxi, and Shenzhen, while the PM2.5 concentrations in Panjin were approximately 1.5 times higher in summer than in winter. There was no significant difference in particulate matter concentrations between the living rooms and bedrooms. Scatter plots showed that cities with low GDP and a small population had higher concentrations, while Shenzhen, which has a higher GDP and a large permanent population, had a relatively low concentration of particulate matter. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that indoor air pollution is a severe problem in China. It is necessary to continue monitoring indoor air quality to observe the changing trend under the tremendous effort of the Chinese government.

RESUMO

Household fine particulate matter (PM2.5 ) pollution greatly impacts residents' health. To explore the current national situation of household PM2.5 pollution in China, a study was conducted based on literature published from 1998 to 2018. After extracting data from the literature in conformity with the requirements, the nationwide household-weighted mean concentration of household PM2.5 (HPL) was calculated. Subgroup analyses of spatial, geographic, and temporal differences were also done. The estimated overall HPL in China was 132.2 ± 117.7 µg/m3 . HPL in the rural area (164.3 ± 104.5 µg/m3 ) was higher than that in the urban area (123.9 ± 122.3 µg/m3 ). For HPLs of indoor sampling sites, the kitchen was the highest, followed by the bedroom and living room. There were significant differences of geographic distributions. The HPLs in the South were higher than the North in four seasons. The inhaled dose of household PM2.5 among school-age children differed from provinces with the highest dose up to 5.9 µg/(kg·d). Countermeasures should be carried out to reduce indoor pollution and safeguard health urgently.
