RESUMO

PURPOSES: The present meta-analysis aimed at identifying potential prognostic indicators associated with adipose distribution patterns for predicting the survival outcomes of patients diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: A systematic retrieve was performed to identify studies investigating the association of adipose distribution patterns and the prognosis of HCC from the inception of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases to May 25, 2023. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was applied to assess the quality of included studies. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of adipose distribution parameters of visceral, subcutaneous, and intermuscular adipose tissue were extracted. Univariate and multivariable meta-analyses were performed by Stata 12.0 to evaluate the relationship between these factors and overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). RESULTS: A total of 31 studies, comprising 7021 patients, including 2456 patients with HCV and 1466 patients with HBV were included. The pooled results indicated that only high visceral to subcutaneous adipose area ratio (VSR) (univariate analysis of OS: HR = 1.42, 95 % CI = 1.28-1.58, P < 0.001; multivariate analysis of OS: HR = 1.45, 95 % CI = 1.27-1.65, P < 0.001; univariate analysis of RFS: HR = 1.30, 95 % CI = 1.08-1.56, P = 0.006; multivariate analysis of RFS: HR = 1.36, 95 % CI = 1.10-1.67, P = 0.004) was both related to worse OS and RFS, with no significant heterogeneity observed. CONCLUSION: Pretreatment VSR, as the sole parameter among adipose distribution-related factors exhibiting independent and stable associations with OS and RFS in patients with HCC, may hold promise as a potential prognostic factor for HCC.

We compared seed set, mass, and dormancy/germination of seeds from flowers at three points on the style-length continuum [long (LS), intermediate (IS), and short (SS) styles] in Ixiolirion songaricum. The effects of open and hand pollination (self and cross with pollen from upper and lower-level stamens) on seed set, mass, and dormancy/germination were assessed. Most freshly-matured seeds from LS, IS, and SS flowers were dormant, and dormancy was broken under laboratory and field conditions. After-ripened seeds from LS and IS flowers germinated to significantly higher percentages than those from SS flowers. In all pollination treatments, seed set and mass were significantly higher for LS and IS than for SS flowers. Seed set, mass, and germination for LS, IS, and SS flowers were significantly higher in open-pollinated and in cross-pollinated with pollen from upper and lower-level stamens than in self-pollination with pollen from upper- and lower-level stamens. These differences in offspring reproductive traits may be adaptive for I. songaricum in its rainfall-unpredictable environment. This is the first study to demonstrate the association between style length and germination in a species with continuous variation in style length.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a major clinical complication after surgery under general anesthesia, particularly in elderly patients, but the mechanisms remain unclear. We recently found that the anaesthetization of aging C57BL/6 J mice (14-16 months) with sevoflurane (3%, two hours each day for three consecutive days) can induce cognitive dysfunction and synaptic plasticity deficits. Further studies demonstrated that sevoflurane induced ANP32A (acidic leucine-rich nuclear phosphoprotein-32A) overexpression by stimulating C/EBPß (CCAAT/enhancer binding protein-ß), which could suppress histone acetylation at H3K18, H3K14, H4K5, and H4K12 and decrease the binding of H3K18 and H3K14 to the promoters of GluN2B and GluN2A, respectively. These results suggest that sevoflurane can inhibit histone acetylation and contribute to cognitive dysfunction by enhancing the expression of ANP32A in aging mice. Our study provides new insights into aging-associated POCD and potential molecular markers for protection.

Defective mitophagy and mitochondrial dysfunction have been linked to aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). ß2-Adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) is critical for mitochondrial and cognitive function. However, researchers have not clearly determined whether ADRB2 activation ameliorates defective mitophagy and cognitive deficits in individuals with AD. Here, we observed that the activation of ADRB2 by clenbuterol (Clen, ADRB2 agonist, 2 mg/kg/day) ameliorated amyloid-ß-induced (Aß1-42 bilateral intracerebral infusion, 2 µl, 5 µg/µl) memory deficits. Activation of ADRB2 also attenuated Aß-induced mitochondrial dysfunction, as revealed by increased ATP levels, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP/Δψm) and complex I activity. Further studies revealed that ADRB2 activation restored mitophagy deficits, as revealed by the increased light chain 3 (LC3)-II/LC3-I ratio, Atg5 levels, and Atg7 levels and decreased p62 levels, along with the upregulation of PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1), Parkin and NAD+ levels. Activation of ADRB2 rescued Aß-induced oxidative stress and neuronal death. ADRB2 activation also attenuated Aß-induced tau hyperphosphorylation by regulating glycogen synthase kinase-3ß expression in the hippocampus. Finally, we established that Clen improved mitophagy and attenuated mitochondrial dysfunction, and tau pathology in mice by activating the ADRB2/Akt/PINK1 signaling pathway. Conversely, the inhibition of ADRB2 by propranolol (ßAR antagonist, 10 µM) blocked the Clen-mediated improvements in pathological changes in N2a cells. The results from the present study indicate that ADRB2 activation may be a therapeutic strategy for AD.

Three-dimensional Ag(I)-fullerene hybrid microcrystal is fabricated by AgNO3 assisted liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation, containing the abundant sp2-π-electron system. With a mild chemical reduction, it produces the massive Ag nanocluster/fullerene junctions, on which fullerene doubles role as the excellent electron acceptor and photon scavenger, enabling the Plasmon-driven catalytic reaction. Ag nanocluster employed alone could not perform this photocatalytic reaction, neither of fullerene (C60) crystal. It implicates that Ag-fullerene interface is a key to drive catalytic process. Relative to conventional TiO2 nanostructures, fullerene expands light absorption to most solar wavelength and possesses a tightened bandgap which intrinsically expedites the charge transfer and charge separation from coinage metals. Demonstrated by photodegradation of organic molecules, this Ag(I)-fullerene (C60) composite, consisted of a plethora of electron donor-acceptor dyads renders an additional member to photocatalyst family, potentially implemented for photo-electron conversion, water remedy and beyond.

Further development of high-efficiency and low-cost organic fluorescent materials is intrinsically hampered by the energy gap law and spin statistics, especially in the near-infrared (NIR) region. Here we design a novel building block with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) activity for realizing highly efficient luminophores covering the deep-red and NIR region, which originates from an increase in the orbital overlap and electron-withdrawing ability. An organic donor-acceptor molecule (BPMT) with the building block is prepared and can readily form J-type molecular columns with multiple C-H⋯N/O interactions. Notably, such synthesized materials can emit fluorescence centered at 701 nm with extremely high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 48.7%. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the formation of the hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) state and substantial C-H⋯N/O interactions contribute to a fast radiative decay rate and a slow nonradiative decay rate, respectively, resulting in high PLQYs in the solid state covering the NIR range. Remarkably, such BPMT crystals, as a first example, reveal strong-penetrability piezochromism along with a distinct PL change from the deep-red (λ max = 704 nm) to NIR (λ max = 821 nm) region. Moreover, such typical AIE-active luminophores are demonstrated to be a good candidate as a lasing medium. Together with epoxy resin by a self-assembly method, a microlaser is successfully illustrated with a lasing wavelength of 735.2 nm at a threshold of 22.3 kW cm-2. These results provide a promising approach to extend the contents of deep-red/NIR luminophores and open a new avenue to enable applications ranging from chemical sensing to lasing.
