BACKGROUND: The Union for International Cancer Control and American Joint Committee on Cancer tumor staging system is used globally for treatment planning. As it may be insufficient for tumor staging of lower gingival carcinomas, we proposed the mandibular canal tumor staging system. In this study, we aimed to compare the two systems for such tumor staging and to identify prognostic markers. METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective study included patients with lower gingival squamous cell carcinoma who underwent radical surgery during 2001-2018. We compared survival rates (Kaplan-Meier estimator) and patient stratification according to the two systems. RESULTS: The proposed system yielded more balanced patient stratification than the existing system. Progression in the tumor grade according to the proposed system was associated with a poorer prognosis. The 5-year overall and disease-specific survival rates for the entire cohort were 74.9% and 81.8%, respectively. Independent factors affecting overall survival were tumor stage according to the proposed system, excision margins, and number of positive nodes, whereas those affecting disease-specific survival were excision margins and number of positive nodes. CONCLUSIONS: Subsite-specific tumor classification should be used for patients with oral cancer, and our results suggest that mandibular canal tumor classification may be effective for patients with lower gingival carcinoma.

The Seafloor Geodetic Observation-Array (SGO-A), operated by the Japan Coast Guard, relies on the Global Navigation Satellite System-Acoustics combination (GNSS-A) technique, which integrates satellite positioning systems and undersea acoustic ranging to determine seafloor crustal deformation at the centimeter level for earthquake disaster prevention. Recently, we found distortion in the SGO-A 10-kHz carrier wave that degraded the accuracy. Carrier wave distortion can cause errors on the scale of several centimeters to twenty centimeters, which greatly impedes centimeter-level observations. This study investigated this carrier wave degradation by an underwater acoustic communication experiment conducted in 2022, using a transducer similar to that used by SGO-A. Also, we reproduced degraded waveforms through a grid search-like method for quantitatively evaluating the extent to which the interior of the equipment contributed to deterioration. Our results underscore the importance of careful consideration in signal processing, as the observed waveform degradation is not solely attributed to hardware structures but also to internal electrical circuits. The findings suggest that conventional signal identification methods may lead to errors, providing motivation for a shift towards experimental and experiential timing-based waveform identification approaches to enhance accuracy in GNSS-A systems.

Activity in the gamma range is related to many sensory and cognitive processes that are impaired in neuropsychiatric conditions. Therefore, individualized measures of gamma-band activity are considered to be potential markers that reflect the state of networks within the brain. Relatively little has been studied in respect of the individual gamma frequency (IGF) parameter. The methodology for determining the IGF is not well established. In the present work, we tested the extraction of IGFs from electroencephalogram (EEG) data in two datasets where subjects received auditory stimulation consisting of clicks with varying inter-click periods, covering a 30-60 Hz range: in 80 young subjects EEG was recorded with 64 gel-based electrodes; in 33 young subjects, EEG was recorded using three active dry electrodes. IGFs were extracted from either fifteen or three electrodes in frontocentral regions by estimating the individual-specific frequency that most consistently exhibited high phase locking during the stimulation. The method showed overall high reliability of extracted IGFs for all extraction approaches; however, averaging over channels resulted in somewhat higher reliability scores. This work demonstrates that the estimation of individual gamma frequency is possible using a limited number of both the gel and dry electrodes from responses to click-based chirp-modulated sounds.

Objective: Using labial vestibular flap was performed to close the primary alveolar and hard palate cleft at the second stage of early 2-stage closure surgery for unilateral cleft lip and palate for minimizing the damage to the maxillary periosteum. We analyzed maxillary development to clarify the influence of cleft palate surgery. Design: Retrospective longitudinal study in 5 years after primary palatal closure. Setting: Institutional study Patients: Study subjects included 214 patients with nonsyndromic complete unilateral cleft lip and palate who were consecutively treated in our clinic. Main Outcome: We used a 3D dental model scanner to assess maxillary development in patients aged 3 months to 5 years after using either the conventional pushback method (PB) (51 cases) or 2-stage closure (Local palatal flap closure: LF [67 cases] and Labial vestibular flap closure: VF [96 cases]). Results: Comparing the measurement results, the major axis of maxilla, width, intercanine distance, and intermolar distance was significantly larger in the LF group compared to the PB group. After the age of 3, the cleft side of VF group had grown significantly to compare with LF group in width. It was also confirmed that the inserted labial mucosal flap itself grew. Enlargement of the labial mucosal flap was observed at all sites except the canine. Conclusion: Good maxillary growth occurred in the following order: VF groups > LF group > PB group. Poor growth was correlated with the extent of periosteal damage during surgery and the degree of postoperative bone surface exposure.

Interplate megathrust earthquakes have inflicted catastrophic damage on human society. Such an earthquake is predicted to occur in the near future along the Nankai Trough off southwestern Japan--an economically active and densely populated area in which megathrust earthquakes have already occurred. Megathrust earthquakes are the result of a plate-subduction mechanism and occur at slip-deficit regions (also known as 'coupling' regions), where friction prevents plates from slipping against each other and the accumulated energy is eventually released forcefully. Many studies have attempted to capture distributions of slip-deficit rates (SDRs) in order to predict earthquakes. However, these studies could not obtain a complete view of the earthquake source region, because they had no seafloor geodetic data. The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department of the Japan Coast Guard (JHOD) has been developing a precise and sustainable seafloor geodetic observation network in this subduction zone to obtain information related to offshore SDRs. Here, we present seafloor geodetic observation data and an offshore interplate SDR-distribution model. Our data suggest that most offshore regions in this subduction zone have positive SDRs. Specifically, our observations indicate previously unknown regions of high SDR that will be important for tsunami disaster mitigation, and regions of low SDR that are consistent with distributions of shallow slow earthquakes and subducting seamounts. This is the first direct evidence that coupling conditions might be related to these seismological and geological phenomena. Our findings provide information for inferring megathrust earthquake scenarios and interpreting research on the Nankai Trough subduction zone.

BACKGROUND: Neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging techniques have been developed but currently require relatively long scan times. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of black-blood delay alternating with nutation for tailored excitation-prepared T1-weighted variable flip angle turbo spin echo (DANTE T1-SPACE), which provides relatively high resolution with a short scan time, to visualize neuromelanin in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). METHODS: Participants comprised 49 healthy controls and 25 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Contrast ratios of SNpc and hyperintense SNpc areas, which show pixels brighter than thresholds, were assessed between DANTE T1-SPACE and T1-SPACE in healthy controls. To evaluate the diagnostic ability of DANTE T1-SPACE, the contrast ratios and hyperintense areas were compared between healthy and PD groups, and receiver operating characteristic analyses were performed. We also compared areas under the curve (AUCs) between DANTE T1-SPACE and the previously reported gradient echo neuromelanin (GRE-NM) imaging. Each analysis was performed using original images in native space and images transformed into Montreal Neurological Institute space. Values of P < 0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: DANTE T1-SPACE showed significantly higher contrast ratios and larger hyperintense areas than T1-SPACE. On DANTE T1-SPACE, healthy controls showed significantly higher contrast ratios and larger hyperintense areas than patients with PD. Hyperintense areas in native space analysis achieved the best AUC (0.94). DANTE T1-SPACE showed AUCs as high as those of GRE-NM. CONCLUSIONS: DANTE T1-SPACE successfully visualized neuromelanin of the SNpc and showed potential for evaluating PD. © 2020 The Authors. BACKGROUND: Hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) maturation has not been extensively evaluated using neonatal MRI, even though both structures are visualized on MRI. HYPOTHESIS: That signal intensity and volume of pituitary and thyroid (T) glands on MRI in neonates may be interrelated. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. SUBJECTS: In all, 102 participants. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3.0T, T1 -weighted pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA). ASSESSMENT: The volume of interest of the anterior pituitary (AP), posterior pituitary (PP), and T on MRI were defined on T1 -PETRA by two radiologists, and volumes of AP (AP_vol) and thyroid (T_vol) were calculated. Gestational age (GA), chronological age (CA), GA+CA, birth weight (BW), and thyroid function were recorded. Mean and maximum signal intensities of AP, PP, and T were normalized using signals from the pons and spinal cord as follows: signal ratio of anterior pituitary/pons (AP/pons), signal ratio of posterior pituitary/pons (PP/pons), and signal ratio of thyroid/cord (T/cord) T/cord, respectively. STATISTICAL TESTS: Correlations between signal intensity and volume measures and GA, CA, GA+CA, and BW were assessed using Pearson's correlation coefficient or Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Thyroid function analysis and Tmean /cord, Tmax /cord, and T_vol were evaluated using the Steel-Dwass test. RESULTS: APmean /pons correlated positively with GA (ρ = 0.62, P < 0.001) and BW (ρ = 0.74, P < 0.001), and negatively with CA (ρ = -0.86, P < 0.001) and GA+CA (ρ = -0.46, P < 0.001). PPmean /pons correlated positively with GA (ρ = 0.49, P < 0.001) and BW (ρ = 0.63, P < 0.001), and negatively with CA (ρ = -0.70, P < 0.001) and GA+CA (r = -0.38, P < 0.001). Tmean /cord correlated positively with GA (ρ = 0.48, P < 0.001) and BW (ρ = 0.55, P < 0.001), and negatively with CA (ρ = -0.59, P < 0.001) and GA+CA (ρ = -0.22, P = 0.03). AP_vol correlated positively with GA (ρ = 0.68, P < 0.001) and BW (ρ = 0.73, P < 0.001), and negatively with CA (ρ = -0.72, P < 0.001). T_vol correlated positively with GA (ρ = 0.50, P < 0.001) and BW (ρ = 0.61, P < 0.001), and negatively with CA (ρ = -0.54, P < 0.001). APmean /pons correlated positively with Tmean /cord (ρ = 0.61, P < 0.001). DATA CONCLUSION: Signal and volume of pituitary and thyroid glands correlated positively with GA and BW, and negatively with CA in neonates. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 4 TECHNICAL EFFICACY STAGE: 5.

Background Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is used to differentiate between calcification and iron deposits. Few studies have examined the relationship between CT attenuation values and magnetic susceptibility in such materials. Purpose To assess the relationship among metal concentration, CT attenuation values, and magnetic susceptibility in paramagnetic and diamagnetic phantoms, and the relationship between CT attenuation values and susceptibility in brain structures that have paramagnetic or diamagnetic properties. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, CT and MRI with QSM were performed in gadolinium and calcium phantoms, patients, and healthy volunteers between June 2016 and September 2017. In the phantom study, we evaluated correlations among metal concentration, CT attenuation values, and susceptibility. In the human study, Pearson and Spearman correlations were performed to assess the relationship between CT attenuation values and susceptibility in regions of interest placed in the globus pallidus (GP), putamen, caudate nucleus, substantia nigra, red nucleus, dentate nucleus, choroid plexus, and hemorrhagic and calcified lesions. Results Eighty-four patients (mean age, 64.8 years ± 19.6; 49 women) and 20 healthy volunteers (mean age, 72.0 years ± 7.6; 11 men) were evaluated. In the phantoms, strong linear correlations were identified between gadolinium concentration and CT and MRI QSM values (R 2 = 0.95 and 0.99, respectively; P < .001 for both) and between calcium concentration and CT and MRI QSM values (R 2 = 0.89 [P = .005] and R 2 = 0.98 [P < .001], respectively). In human studies, positive correlations between CT attenuation values and susceptibility were observed in the GP (R 2 = 0.52, P < .001) and in hemorrhagic lesions (R 2 = 0.38, P < .001), and negative correlations were found in the choroid plexus (R 2 = 0.53, P < .001) and in calcified lesions (R 2 = 0.38, P = .009). Conclusion CT attenuation values showed a positive correlation with susceptibility in the globus pallidus and hemorrhagic lesions and negative correlation in the choroid plexus and calcified lesions. © RSNA, 2020 Online supplemental material is available for this article.

BACKGROUND: Time-resolved angiography with interleaved stochastic trajectories (TWIST) is a keyhole imaging with frequent sampling of central k-space data and view-sharing for the peripheral k-space of dynamic phases. IT-TWIST is a technique to reconstruct images with a smaller temporal footprint using the same raw data obtained with TWIST by iterative reconstruction. PURPOSE: To compare image quality between TWIST and IT-TWIST in 3D pituitary DCE-MRI. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective observation study. POPULATION: Fifty-one patients (23 men, 28 women) who underwent 3D pituitary DCE-MRI using TWIST between July 2016 and April 2017. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3T/TWIST and IT-TWIST. ASSESSMENT: Visual evaluation was conducted for image quality of delineation of the pituitary stalk and posterior lobe during the early arterial phase, cerebral white matter near the sella turcica, and the mass lesion. Bolus sharpness of the pituitary stalk, posterior lobe, and bilateral cavernous sinus was evaluated on the enhancement slope map calculated from TWIST and IT-TWIST. Temporal stability of intensity of the nonenhanced area was evaluated on temporal standard deviation (SD) maps calculated from TWIST and IT-TWIST. STATISTICAL TESTS: Paired t-test or Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used to test the differences between TWIST and IT-TWIST in both visual evaluation and region of interest evaluation. RESULTS: Scores of visual evaluations for IT-TWIST were significantly better than those for TWIST (P < 0.001) in all items. Enhancement slope for IT-TWIST was significantly higher than that for TWIST in posterior lobe, and right and left cavernous sinus (P < 0.001). Temporal SD for IT-TWIST was significantly lower than that for TWIST in all items, with statistical significance (P < 0.001). DATA CONCLUSION: IT-TWIST yielded better visualization, and better enhancement slope, and less temporal SD compared with TWIST in 3D pituitary DCE-MRI. OBJECTIVE: To compare the absolute values and repeatability of magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) with 3000 and 1500 echoes/slice acquired in 41 s and 20 s (MRF3k and MRF1.5k, respectively). MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRF3k and MRF1.5k scans based on fast imaging with steady precession (FISP) were conducted using a 3 T scanner. Inter-scan agreement and intra-scan repeatability were investigated in 41 and 28 subjects, respectively. Region-of-interest (ROI) analysis was conducted on T1 values of MRF3k by two raters, and their agreement was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Between MRF3k and MRF1.5k, differences in T1 and T2 values and inter-measurement correlation coefficients (CCs) were investigated. Intra-measurement repeatability was evaluated using coefficients of variation (CVs). A p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The ICCs of ROI measurements were 0.77-0.96. Differences were observed between the two MRF scans, but the CCs of the overall ROIs were 0.99 and 0.97 for the T1 and T2 values, respectively. The mean and median CVs of repeatability were equal to or less than 1.58% and 3.13% in each of the ROIs for T1 and T2, respectively; there were some significant differences between MRF3k and MRF1.5k, but they were small, measuring less than 1%. DISCUSSION: Both MRF3k and MRF1.5k had high repeatability, and a strong to very strong correlation was observed, with a trend toward slightly higher values in MRF1.5k.

Afferent chorda tympani (CT) fibers innervating taste and somatosensory receptors in fungiform papillae have neuron cell bodies in the geniculate ganglion (GG). The GG/CT fibers branch in the tongue to innervate taste buds in several fungiform papillae. To investigate receptive field characteristics of GG/CT neurons, we recorded extracellular responses from GG cells to application of chemical and thermal stimuli. Receptive field size was mapped by electrical stimulation of individual fungiform papillae. Response latency to electrical stimulation was used to determine fiber conduction velocity. Responses of GG neurons to lingual application of stimuli representing four taste qualities, and water at 4°C, were used to classify neuron response properties. Neurons classified as SALT, responding only to NaCl and NH4Cl, had a mean receptive field size of six papillae. Neurons classified as OTHER responded to salts and other chemical stimuli and had smaller mean receptive fields of four papillae. Neurons that responded to salts and cold stimuli, classified as SALT/THERMAL, and neurons responding to salts, other chemical stimuli and cold, classified as OTHER/THERMAL, had mean receptive field sizes of six and five papillae, respectively. Neurons responding only to cold stimuli, categorized as THERMAL, had receptive fields of one to two papillae located at the tongue tip. Based on conduction velocity most of the neurons were classified as C fibers. Neurons with large receptive fields had higher conduction velocities than neurons with small receptive fields. These results demonstrate that GG neurons can be distinguished by receptive field size, response properties and afferent fiber conduction velocity derived from convergent input of multiple taste organs.

Condylar resorption occurs in some cases after orthognathic surgery, and the risk factors associated with postoperative condylar head resorption have been extensively described. Nevertheless, even in cases with a combination of risk factors, postoperative condylar resorption may not appear. This study analyzed the microstructure and three-dimensional positional change of the condylar bone via imaging in patients who have undergone bimaxillary orthognathic surgery to determine whether the microstructure or condylar position differs between patients with and without postoperative condylar resorption. Among asymptomatic patients who underwent bimaxillary surgery between April 2021 and March 2022 at our department, 17 patients were analyzed, limited to "female," "skeletal Class II," and "high-angle cases," which are known risk factors for mandibular head resorption. Multidetector computed tomography was performed on these patients before and 6 months after surgery, and the bone microstructure of the condylar head and the three-dimensional positional changes of the condylar bone and the proximal bony fragments were compared with the presence of postoperative condyle resorption using the bone morphology software TRI/3D-BON. Patients with condylar bone abnormalities before surgery and those with high trabecular bone density can develop postoperative resorption if the condyle is misaligned by surgery.

Swallowing is induced by a central pattern generator in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). We aimed to create a medullary slice preparation to elucidate the neural architecture of the central pattern generator of swallowing (Sw-CPG) and record its neural activities. Experiments were conducted on 2-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 46). The brainstem-spinal cord was transected at the pontomedullary and cervicothoracic junctions; the medulla was sliced transversely at thicknesses of 600, 700, or 800 µm. The rostral end of the slice was 100 µm rostral to the vagus nerve. We recorded hypoglossal nerve activity and electrically stimulated the vagus nerve or microinjected bicuculline methiodide (BIC) into the NTS. The 800-µm slices generated both rhythmic respiratory activity and electrically elicited neural activity. The 700-µm slices generated only respiratory activity, while the 600-µm slices did not generate any neural activity. BIC microinjection into the NTS in 800-µm slices resulted in the typical activity that closely resembled the swallowing activity reported in other experiments. This swallowing-like activity consistently lengthened the respiratory interval. Despite complete inhibition of respiratory activity, weak swallowing-like activity was observed under bath application of a non-NMDA receptor antagonist. Contrastingly, bath application of NMDA receptor antagonists resulted in a complete loss of swallowing-like activity and no change in respiratory activity. These results suggest that the 800-µm medullary slice preparation contains both afferent and efferent neural circuits and pattern generators of swallowing activity. Additionally, NMDA receptors may be necessary for generating swallowing activity. This medullary slice preparation can therefore elucidate Sw-CPG neural networks.

The Global Navigation Satellite System-Acoustic ranging combination technique (GNSS-A) is the only geodetic observation method that can precisely detect absolute horizontal and vertical seafloor crustal deformations at the centimetre scale. GNSS-A has detected many geophysical phenomena and is expected to make great contributions to earthquake disaster prevention science and geodesy. However, current observation methods that use vessels and buoys suffer from high cost or poor real-time performance, which leads to low observation frequency and delays in obtaining and transmitting disaster prevention information. To overcome these problems, a new sea surface platform is needed. Here, we present an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system developed for GNSS-A surveys capable of landing on the sea surface. Submetre-level seafloor positioning is achieved based on real-time single-frequency GNSS data acquired over an actual site. UAV-based GNSS-A allows high-frequency, near real-time deployment, and low-cost seafloor geodetic observations. This system could be deployed to acquire high-frequency observations with centimetre-scale accuracies when using dual-frequency GNSS.

A frequency range exceeding approximately 30 Hz, denoted as the gamma frequency range, is associated with various cognitive functions, consciousness, sensory integration, short-term memory, working memory, encoding and maintenance of episodic memory, and retrieval processes. In this study, we proposed a new form of gamma stimulation, called gamma music, combining 40 Hz auditory stimuli and music. This gamma music consists of drums, bass, and keyboard sounds, each containing a 40 Hz frequency oscillation. Since 40 Hz stimuli are known to induce an auditory steady-state response (ASSR), we used the 40 Hz power and phase locking index (PLI) as indices of neural activity during sound stimulation. We also recorded subjective ratings of each sound through a questionnaire using a visual analog scale. The gamma music, gamma drums, gamma bass, and gamma keyboard sounds showed significantly higher values in 40 Hz power and PLI compared to the control music without a 40 Hz oscillation. Particularly, the gamma keyboard sound showed a potential to induce strong ASSR, showing high values in these indices. In the subjective ratings, the gamma music, especially the gamma keyboard sound, received more relaxed, comfortable, preferred, pleasant, and natural impressions compared to the control music with conventional gamma stimulation. These results indicate that our proposed gamma music has potential as a new method for inducing ASSR. Particularly, the gamma keyboard sound proved to be an effective acoustic source for inducing a strong ASSR while preserving the comfortable and pleasant sensation of listening to music. Our developed gamma music, characterized by its pleasantness to the human ear, offers a significant advantage for the long-term use of gamma stimulation. The utilization of this music could potentially reduce the physical and psychological burden on participants compared to conventional 40 Hz stimuli. This music is not only expected to contribute to fundamental neuroscience research utilizing ASSR but also to facilitate the implementation of gamma music-based interventions aimed at enhancing human cognitive functions in everyday life.

Numerous studies report that perioperative oral care decreases the frequency of postoperative pneumonia or infection. However, no studies have analyzed the specific impact of oral infection sources on the postoperative course, and the criteria for preoperative dental care differ among institutions. This study aimed to analyze the factors and dental conditions present in patients with postoperative pneumonia and infection. Our results suggest that general factors related to postoperative pneumonia, including thoracic surgery, sex (male > female), the presence or absence of perioperative oral management, smoking history, and operation time, were identified, but there were no dental-related risk factors associated with it. However, the only general factor related to postoperative infectious complications was operation time, and the only dental-related risk factor was periodontal pocket (4 mm or higher). These results suggest that oral management immediately before surgery is sufficient to prevent postoperative pneumonia, but that moderate periodontal disease must be eliminated to prevent postoperative infectious complication, which requires periodontal treatment not only immediately before surgery, but also on a daily basis.

In this study, we investigated whether toothbrushing timing affects cardiovascular disease risk. We enrolled 1675 patients aged ≥ 20 years who were hospitalized for surgery, examination, or medical treatment. The participants were categorized as follows based on toothbrushing: Group MN (brushing teeth after waking up and at night, n = 409), Group Night (brushing teeth at night but not upon waking up, n = 751), Group M (brushing teeth after waking up but not at night, n = 164), and Group None (not brushing teeth at all, n = 259). The participants' age, sex, smoking history, and follow-up results were evaluated. Group M had four times as many men as women. Multivariate analysis of cardiovascular events showed significantly higher survival estimates in Group MN (P = 0.021) and Group Night (P = 0.004) than in Group None. Kaplan-Meier analysis of subgroups based on smoking status revealed that smokers in Group None had significantly worse prognosis for cardiovascular onset events than smokers in other groups; non-smokers in Groups None and M showed significantly worse prognosis on hospitalization. Our findings are limited to cardiovascular diseases and cannot be generalized to healthy populations. However, we suggest that brushing teeth at night is important for lowering cardiovascular disease risk.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder characterised by the progressive degeneration of motor neurons, resulting in muscle weakness, paralysis, and, ultimately, death. Presently, no effective treatment for ALS has been established. Although motor neuron dysfunction is a hallmark of ALS, emerging evidence suggests that sensory neurons are also involved in the disease. In clinical research, 30% of patients with ALS had sensory symptoms and abnormal sensory nerve conduction studies in the lower extremities. Peroneal nerve biopsies show histological abnormalities in 90% of the patients. Preclinical research has reported several genetic abnormalities in the sensory neurons of animal models of ALS, as well as in motor neurons. Furthermore, the aggregation of misfolded proteins like TAR DNA-binding protein 43 has been reported in sensory neurons. This review aims to provide a comprehensive description of ALS-related sensory neuron dysfunction, focusing on its clinical changes and underlying mechanisms. Sensory neuron abnormalities in ALS are not limited to somatosensory issues; proprioceptive sensory neurons, such as MesV and DRG neurons, have been reported to form networks with motor neurons and may be involved in motor control. Despite receiving limited attention, sensory neuron abnormalities in ALS hold potential for new therapies targeting proprioceptive sensory neurons.

Navigation in indoor and underground environments has been extensively studied to realize automation of home, hospital, office, factory and mining services, and various techniques have been proposed for its implementation. By utilizing the relativistic and penetrative nature of cosmic-ray muons, a completely new wireless navigation technique called wireless muometric navigation system (MuWNS) was developed. This paper shows the results of the world's first physical demonstration of MuWNS used on the basement floor inside a building to navigate (a person) in an area where global navigation satellite system (GNSS)/ global positioning system (GPS) signals cannot reach. The resultant navigation accuracy was comparable or better than the positioning accuracy attainable with single-point GNSS/GPS positioning in urban areas. With further improvements in stability of local clocks used for timing, it is anticipated that MuWNS can be adapted to improve autonomous mobile robot navigation and positioning as well as other underground and underwater practical applications.

OBJECTIVES: The 8th edition of the International Union Against Cancer Control/American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging System introduced depth of invasion (DOI) and extranodal extension (ENE) into the staging of oral cavity cancer. We evaluated the prognostic ability of this new staging system compared with the 7th edition using clinical DOI (cDOI) and clinical ENE (cENE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed and restaged 2,118 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma treated between 2001 and 2018 using cDOI and cENE. Overall and disease-specific survival were used as endpoints to compare the prognostic outcomes of the 7th and 8th editions using Harrell's concordance index (C-index). RESULTS: In total, 305 (14.4 %) cases were upstaged in the T category, 85 (4.0 %) cases were upstaged in the N category, and 280 (13.2 %) cases were upstaged in the overall TNM stage. The introduction of the cDOI increased the C-index and hazard ratio (HR) for each T category. The introduction of cENE increased the N3b category of 85 cases, bringing the total to 94 cases, thereby widening the differences between each N category. In the 8th edition, the C-index and HR for overall TNM stage increased, and the discrimination between stage groups improved. CONCLUSIONS: The 8th edition of the TNM clinical staging system using cDOI and cENE predominantly identified patients with a high mortality rate, thus improving the ability to discriminate and prognosticate oral cancer.
