RESUMO

The impact of heterogeneous catalytic systems, which are based on rare earth metals, on the properties of biodiesel produced via the transesterification process in a stationary reactor (autoclave) was thoroughly investigated. The physicochemical attributes, including the specific surface area, were analyzed employing the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The basicity and acidity levels of the catalytic systems were evaluated through temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia and carbon dioxide (TPD-NH3, TPD-CO2), respectively. Furthermore, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis facilitated the assessment of triglyceride conversion and the determination of methyl ester (FAME) selectivity within these processes. Our findings indicate that catalytic systems augmented with lanthanum showcased superior performance. A significant correlation was discerned between the conversion and selectivity to methyl esters and both the specific surface area and the acidity and basicity properties of the catalytic systems under study. These results underscore the crucial role that the physicochemical characteristics of catalytic systems play in optimizing the transesterification process, thereby enhancing the quality of the produced biodiesel. This study contributes valuable insights into the development of more efficient and effective biodiesel production methodologies, highlighting the potential of rare earth metal-based catalysts in renewable energy technologies.

RESUMO

This work investigated the influence of the catalytic support precursor on the activity of nickel catalysts 20%Ni/5%La2O3-95%Al2O3 in the mixed methane reforming process. The activity tests were carried out at a temperature of 750 °C. The research showed that the catalyst prepared from the precursor containing chloride exhibited very low conversions of methane and carbon dioxide. The poisoned catalyst system before and after the calcination process was subjected to Temperature Programmed Surface Reaction tests to determine whether the thermal treatment causes a decrease in the amount of chlorine in the system. To determine the decomposition temperature of the LaCl3 precursor and the nickel chloride NiCl2 compound, the samples were analyzed by Thermogravimetry. Finally, the catalytic samples were tested by Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry analysis to confirm the presence of nickel-chlorine bonds on the surface of the catalytic system.

RESUMO

This report presents the results of long-term tests on concrete beams reinforced with steel cord. In this study, natural aggregate was wholly replaced with waste sand or with wastes from the production of ceramic products and ceramic hollow bricks. The amounts of individual fractions used were determined in accordance with guidelines for reference concrete. A total of eight mixtures were tested; these differed in terms of the type of waste aggregate used. Elements with various fiber-reinforcement ratios were made for each mixture. Steel fibers and waste fibers were used in amounts of 0.0%, 0.5%, and 1.0%. Compressive strength and modulus of elasticity were determined experimentally for each mixture. The main test was a four-point beam bending test. Beams with dimensions of 100 mm × 200 mm × 2900 mm were tested on a stand, which was specially prepared so that three beams could be tested simultaneously. Fiber-reinforcement ratios were 0.5% and 1.0%. Long-term studies were conducted for 1000 days. During the testing period, beam deflections and cracks were measured. The obtained results were compared with values calculated using several methods, considering the influence of dispersed reinforcement. The results enabled the best methods for calculating individual values for mixtures with different types of waste materials to be determined.

RESUMO

This study presents the results of laboratory experiments conducted to determine the mechanical parameters for cement mortar with various quantities of waste fibers, polypropylene microfibers, and steel microfibers. Waste fibers were used as samples and obtained using an end-of-life car tire recycling process. For comparison, samples with the addition of steel and polypropylene microfibers were tested. The same degrees of fiber reinforcement were used for all types of fibers. Ultimately, 22 mixtures of cement mortar were prepared. The aim of this study is therefore to present and compare basic mechanical parameter values. Compressive strength, flexural strength, fracture toughness, and flexural toughness were of particular interest. A three-point bending test was performed on three types of samples, without a notch and with a notch of 4 and 8 mm. The results show that the use of steel microfibers in the cement mortar produces a product with better properties compared to a mixture with steel cord or polypropylene fibers. However, the cement mortar with the steel cord provides better flexural strength and greater flexural toughness factors compared to the cement mortar with polypropylene fibers. This means that the steel cord is a full-value ecological replacement for different fibers.

RESUMO

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is a common opportunistic respiratory infection among children with human immunodeficiency virus and a weakened immune system. The primary infection in immunocompetent patients may be asymptomatic, whereas fever, shortness of breath, night sweats, nonproductive (dry) cough, pneumonia, progressive respiratory distress and apnea are cardinal symptoms of full-blown pneumocystis pneumonia. The diagnosis can be confirmed by histochemical staining of biological specimens or, recently, by polymerase chain reaction. International recommendations indicate that the drug of choice is the intravenously administered trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combination. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment reduce the mortality of the disease. This article briefly highlights the epidemiology of Pneumocystis pneumonia, its diagnosis and therapeutic options in the pediatric population.

RESUMO

In the last decades, fiber reinforced concrete have emerged as the possible key to revolutionize civil engineering. Among different types of fibers employed in concrete technology to date, the application of recycled steel fibers produced from end-of-life car tires appears to be a viable approach towards environmentally friendly construction. In this study, we demonstrate the laboratory research and numerical analysis of concrete reinforced with waste steel fibers recovered during the recycling process of end-of-life car tires. Concrete mixes with the following fiber contents: 0.5%, 0.75%, 1.0%, 1.25%, and 1.5% per volume were prepared and then tested in three-point bending conditions. The laboratory investigation revealed highly boosted properties of concrete under flexure. We further performed the finite element method (FEM) analysis of 2D models using Atena software in order to develop a material model allowing the numerical modelling of recycled steel fibers reinforced concrete (RSFRC) behavior. The parameters of RSFRC material model have been modified using the inverse analysis until matching the experimental performance of the material. The results, being in good agreement with the laboratory investigation, have indicated a high potential of RSFRC for real scale construction applications.

RESUMO

This work investigates the effect of the addition of Ru and CeO2 on the process of gasification of carbon deposits formed on the surface of a nickel catalyst during the mixed methane reforming process. Activity studies of the mixed methane reforming process were carried out on (Ru)-Ni/CeO2-Al2O3 catalysts at the temperature of 650-750 °C. The ruthenium-promoted catalyst exhibited the highest activity. Carbonized post-reaction catalyst samples were tested with the TOC technique to investigate the carbonization state of the samples. The bimetallic catalyst had the lowest amount of carbon deposit (1.5%) after reaction at 750 °C. The reactivity of the carbon species was assessed in mixtures of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and water. Regardless of the gasifying agent used, the carbon deposit was removed from the surface of the catalytic system. The overall mechanism of mixed methane reforming over Ru and CeO2 was shown.

RESUMO

Probiotics seem to have promising effects in the prevention and treatment of allergic conditions including atopic dermatitis (AD) and food allergy. The purpose of this multicenter randomized placebo-controlled trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of a probiotic preparation comprising Lactobacillus rhamnosus LOCK 0900, Lactobacillus rhamnosus LOCK 0908, and Lactobacillus casei LOCK 0918 in children under 2 years of age with AD and a cow's milk protein (CMP) allergy. The study enrolled 151 children, who-apart from being treated with a CMP elimination diet-were randomized to receive the probiotic preparation at a daily dose of 109 bacteria or a placebo for three months, with a subsequent nine-month follow-up. The primary outcomes included changes in AD symptom severity assessed with the scoring AD (SCORAD) index and in the proportion of children with symptom improvement (a SCORAD score decreased by at least 30% in comparison with that at baseline). After the three-month intervention, both the probiotic and placebo groups showed a significant (p < 0.0001) decrease in SCORAD scores, which was maintained nine months later. The percentage of children who showed improvement was significantly higher in the probiotic than in the placebo group (odds ratio (OR) 2.56; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-5.8; p = 0.012) after three months. Probiotics induced SCORAD improvement mainly in allergen sensitized patients (OR 6.03; 95% CI 1.85-19.67, p = 0.001), but this positive effect was not observed after nine months. The results showed that the mixture of probiotic LOCK strains offers benefits for children with AD and CMP allergy. Further research is necessary to assess the effect of probiotic supplementation on the development of immune tolerance (NCT04738565).
