RESUMO

The abnormal GGGGCC hexanucleotide repeat expansions (HREs) in C9orf72 cause the fatal neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia. The transcribed RNA HREs, short for r(G4C2)n, can form toxic RNA foci which sequestrate RNA binding proteins and impair RNA processing, ultimately leading to neurodegeneration. Here, we determined the crystal structure of r(G4C2)2, which folds into a parallel tetrameric G-quadruplex composed of two four-layer dimeric G-quadruplex via 5'-to-5' stacking in coordination with a K+ ion. Notably, the two C bases locate at 3'- end stack on the outer G-tetrad with the assistance of two additional K+ ions. The high-resolution structure reported here lays a foundation in understanding the mechanism of neurological toxicity of RNA HREs. Furthermore, the atomic details provide a structural basis for the development of potential therapeutic agents against the fatal neurodegenerative diseases ALS/FTD.

One of the key goals of ecology is to understand how communities are assembled. The species co-existence theory suggests that community ß-diversity is influenced by species pool and community assembly processes, such as environmental filtering, dispersal events, ecological drift and biotic interactions. However, it remains unclear whether there are similar ß-diversity patterns among different soil microbial groups and whether all these mechanisms play significant roles in mediating ß-diversity patterns. By conducting a broad survey across Chinese deserts, we aimed to address these questions by investing biological soil crusts (biocrusts). Through amplicon-sequencing, we acquired ß-diversity data for multiple microbial groups, that is, soil total bacteria, diazotrophs, phoD-harbouring taxa, and fungi. Our results have shown varying distance decay rates of ß-diversity across microbial groups, with soil total bacteria showing a weaker distance-decay relationship than other groups. The impact of the species pool on community ß-diversity varied across microbial groups, with soil total bacteria and diazotrophs being significantly influenced. While the contributions of specific assembly processes to community ß-diversity patterns varied among different microbial groups, significant effects of local community assembly processes on ß-diversity patterns were consistently observed across all groups. Homogenous selection and dispersal limitation emerged as crucial processes for all groups. Precipitation and soil C:P were the key factors mediating ß-diversity for all groups. This study has substantially advanced our understanding of how the communities of multiple microbial groups are structured in desert biocrust systems.

Hydrovoltaic devices (HDs) based on silicon nanowire (SiNW) arrays have received intensive attention due to their simple preparation, mature processing technology, and high output power. Investigating the impact of structure parameters of SiNWs on the performance of HDs can guide the optimization of the devices, but related research is still not sufficient. This work studies the effect of the SiNW density on the performance of HDs. SiNW arrays with different densities were prepared by controlling the react time of Si wafers in the seed solution (tseed) in metal-assisted chemical etching. Density of SiNW array gradually decreases with the increase oftseed. HDs were fabricated based on SiNW arrays with different densities. The research results indicate that the open-circuit voltage gradually decreases with increasingtseed, while the short-circuit current first increases and then decreases with increasingtseed. Overall, SiNW devices withtseedof 20 s and 60 s have the best output performance. The difference in output performance of HDs based on SiNWs with different densities is attributed to the difference in the gap sizes between SiNWs, specific surface area of SiNWs, and the number of SiNWs in parallel. This work gives the corresponding relationship between the preparation conditions of SiNWs, array density, and output performance of hydrovoltaic devices. Density parameters of SiNW arrays with optimized output performance and corresponding preparation conditions are revealed. The relevant results have important reference value for understanding the mechanism of HDs and designing structural parameters of SiNWs for high-performance hydrovoltaic devices.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly lethal neurological tumor that presents significant challenge for clinicians due to its heterogeneity and high mortality rate. Despite extensive research, there is currently no effective drug treatment available for GBM. Research evidence has consistently demonstrated that the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) promotes tumor progression and is associated with poor prognosis in several types of cancer. In glioma, EGFR abnormal amplification is reported in approximately 40% of GBM patients, with overexpression observed in 60% of cases, and deletion or mutation in 24% to 67% of patients. In our study, Sitravatinib, a potential EGFR inhibitor, was identified through molecular docking screening based on protein structure. The targeting of EGFR and the tumor inhibitory effect of Sitravatinib on glioma were verified through cellular and in vivo experiments, respectively. Our study also revealed that Sitravatinib effectively inhibited GBM invasive and induced DNA damage and cellular senescence. Furthermore, we observed a novel cell death phenotype induced by Sitravatinib, which differed from previously reported programmed death patterns such as apoptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis, and necrosis.

Ag-assisted chemical etching (AgACE) is a low-cost method to produce silicon nanowires (SiNWs) for photoelectric applications. Structure parameters of SiNWs have great impact on their optical and photoelectric properties, which are worth studying for fabricating high-performance devices. However, array density of SiNWs via AgACE, as an important structural parameter, has not been sufficiently investigated. Here, array density effect on the optical and photoelectric properties of SiNWs is experimentally investigated. SiNW arrays with different densities (silicon occupation ratio of 7%-34.5%) were prepared through controlling the reaction time of silicon wafers in the seed solution (tseed). The SiNW array with atseedof 90 s shows optimum light absorption over 98% in the wavelength range of 300-1000 nm, though all the samples have light absorption over 95% due to the light trapping effect of nanowire array structure. In addition, the SiNW array with atseedof 90 s exhibits the best photoelectric property. SiNW arrays with shortertseedand higher density suffer more surface recombination, harming the photoelectric property. In SiNW arrays with longertseedthan 90 s and lower density, some SiNWs topple down and break, which has an adverse effect on transport and collection of carriers. These results indicate that the array density of SiNWs via AgACE has obvious effect on their photoelectric property. SiNW arrays via AgACE with atseedof 90 s are ideal for photoelectric devices. This work is potential to guide SiNW fabrication for photoelectric applications.

Silicon-based field effect transistor (FET) sensors with high sensitivity are emerging as powerful sensors for detecting chemical/biological species. Strain engineering has been demonstrated as an effective means to improve the performance of Si-based devices. However, the strain effect on the field-effect sensing property of silicon materials has not been studied yet. Here, we investigate the strain effect on the field-effect sensing property of silicon wires by taking humidity sensing as an example. The humidity sensitivity of FET sensors based on silicon wires increases with increasing tensile strain but decreases with increasing compressive strain. The sensitivity is very responsive to strain with an enhancement factor of 67 for tensile strain. Theoretical analysis shows that the sensitivity variation under different strains is mainly attributed to the change in adsorption energy between silicon wires and water molecules. This work indicates that strain engineering can be an effective route to modulate the field-effect sensing property of Si wires for constructing highly sensitive Si-based FET sensors.

3-chyomotrypsin like protease (3CLpro) has been considered as a promising target for developing anti-SARS-CoV-2 drugs. Herein, about 6000 compounds were analyzed by high-throughput screening using enzyme activity model, and Merbromin, an antibacterial agent, was identified as a potent inhibitor of 3CLpro. Merbromin strongly inhibited the proteolytic activity of 3CLpro but not the other three proteases Proteinase K, Trypsin and Papain. Michaelis-Menten kinetic analysis showed that Merbromin was a mixed-type inhibitor of 3CLpro, due to its ability of increasing the KM and decreasing the Kcat of 3CLpro. The binding assays and molecular docking suggested that 3CLpro possessed two binding sites for Merbromin. Consistently, Merbromin showed a weak binding to the other three proteases. Together, these findings demonstrated that Merbromin is a selective inhibitor of 3CLpro and provided a scaffold to design effective inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2.

Wearable sensors that can mimic functionalities of human bodies have attracted intense recent attention. However, research on wearable airflow sensors is still lagging behind. Herein, we report a biomimetic hair sensor based on a single ultralong silicon nanowire (SiNW-BHS) for airflow detection. In our device, the SiNW can provide both mechanical and electrical responses in airflow, which enables a simple and compact design. The SiNW-BHSs can detect airflow with a low detection limit (<0.15 m/s) and a record-high response speed (response time <40 ms). The compact design of the SiNW-BHSs also enables easy integration of an array of devices onto a flexible substrate to mimic human skin to provide comprehensive airflow information including wind speed, incident position, incident angle, and so forth. This work provides novel-designed BHSs for ultrafast and highly sensitive airflow detection, showing great potential for applications such as e-skins, wearable electronics, and robotics.

Miniaturized stretchable strain sensors are key components in E-skins for applications such as personalized health-monitoring, body motion perception, and human-machine interfaces. However, it remains a big challenge to fabricate miniaturized stretchable strain sensors with high imperceptibility. Here, we reported for the first time novel ultraminiaturized stretchable strain sensors based on single centimeter-long silicon nanowires (cm-SiNWs). With the diameter of the active materials even smaller than that of spider silks, these sensors are highly imperceptible. They exhibit a large strain sensing range (>45%) and a high durability (>10 000 cycles). Their optimum strain sensing ranges could be modulated by controlling the prestrains of the stretchable cm-SiNWs. On the basis of this capability, sensors with appropriate sensing ranges were chosen to respectively monitor large and subtle human motions including joint motion, swallow, and touch. The strategy of applying single cm-SiNWs in stretchable sensors would open new doors to fabricate ultraminiaturized stretchable devices.

BACKGROUND: Although chronic periodontitis has previously been reported to be linked with Alzheimer's disease (AD), the pathogenesis between the two is unclear. The purpose of this study is to analyze and screen the relevant and promising molecular markers between chronic periodontitis and Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: In this paper, we analyzed three AD expression datasets and extracted differentially expressed genes (DEGs), then intersected them with chronic periodontitis genes obtained from text mining, and finally obtained integrated DEGs. We followed that by enriching the matching the matching cell signal cascade through DAVID analysis. Moreover, the MCODE of Cytoscape software was employed to uncover the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and the matching hub gene. Finally, we verified our data using a different independent AD cohort. RESULTS: The chronic periodontitis gene set acquired from text abstracting was intersected with the previously obtained three AD groups, and 12 common genes were obtained. Functional enrichment assessment uncovered 12 cross-genes, which were mainly linked to cell morphogenesis involved in neuron differentiation, leading edge membrane, and receptor ligand activity. After PPI network creation, the ten hub genes linked to AD were retrieved, consisting of SPP1, THY1, CD44, ITGB1, HSPB3, CREB1, SST, UCHL1, CCL5 and BMP7. Finally, the function terms in the new independent dataset were used to verify the previous dataset, and we found 22 GO terms and one pathway, "ECM-receptor interaction pathways", in the overlapping functional terms. CONCLUSIONS: The establishment of the above-mentioned candidate key genes, as well as the enriched signaling cascades, provides promising molecular markers for chronic periodontitis-related AD, which may help the diagnosis and treatment of AD patients in the future.

The elongation of free-standing one-dimensional (1D) functional nanostructures into lengths above the millimeter range has brought new practical applications as they combine the remarkable properties of nanostructured materials with macroscopic lengths. However, it remains a big challenge to prepare 1D silicon nanostructures, one of the most important 1D nanostructures, with lengths above the millimeter range. Here we report the unprecedented preparation of ultralong single-crystalline Si nanowires with length up to 2 cm, which can function as the smallest active material to facilitate the miniaturization of macroscopic devices. These ultralong Si nanowires with augmented flexibility are of emerging interest for flexible electronics. We also demonstrate the first single-nanowire-based wearable joint motion sensor with superior performance to reported systems, which just represents one example of novel devices that can be built from these nanowires. The preparation of ultralong Si nanowires will stimulate the fabrication and miniaturization of electric, optical, medical, and mechanical devices to impact the semiconductor industry and our daily life in the near future.

Site-selective growth on non-spherical seeds provides an indispensable route to hierarchical complex nanostructures that are interesting for diverse applications. However, this has only been achieved through epitaxial growth, which is restricted to crystalline materials with similar crystal structures and physicochemical properties. A non-epitaxial growth strategy is reported for hierarchical nanostructures, where site-selective growth is controlled by the curvature of non-spherical seeds. This strategy is effective for site-selective growth of silica nanorods from non-spherical seeds of different shapes and materials, such as α-Fe2 O3 , NaYF4 , and ZnO. This growth strategy is not limited by the stringent requirements of epitaxy and is thus a versatile general method suitable for the preparation of hierarchical nanostructures with controlled morphologies and compositions to open up a verity of applications in self-assembly, nanorobotics, catalysis, electronics, and biotechnology.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in the pathogenesis of many types of cancers by negatively regulating gene expression at posttranscriptional level. Here, we identified that miR-599 is up-regulated in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. It promoted NSCLC cell proliferation by negatively regulating SATB2. In NSCLC cell lines, CCK-8 proliferation assay indicated that the cell proliferation is promoted by miR-599 mimics. Transwell assay showed that miR-599 mimics promoted the invasion and migration of NSCLC cells. Luciferase assays confirmed that miR-599 directly binds to the 3'untranslated region of SATB2, and western blotting showed that miR-599 suppresses the expression of SATB2 at the protein level. This study indicates that miR-599 promotes proliferation and invasion of NSCLC cell lines via SATB2. The miR-599 may represent a potential therapeutic target for NSCLC treatment.

AIM: The eicosanoids derived from phospholipids play key roles in inflammation. However, the profiles of serum eicosanoids in subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) patients and the effects of thyroxine replacement therapy (TRT) on these eicosanoids remain unclear. Many studies show that TSH regulates lipid metabolism. As eicosanoids derived from phospholipids play key roles in oxidative stress and immune function and inflammatory process, it was necessary to explore the profiles of serum eicosanoids in SH patients and the effects of thyroxine replacement therapy (TRT) on the eicosanoids. METHODS: A total of 50 Chinese SH patients and 22 healthy volunteers were recruited. SH patients received TRT (L-T4, 25 and 50 mcg/d for patients with TSH≤10.0 mIU/L and TSH>10.0 mIU/L, respectively) for 3 months. Serum levels of major eicosanoids and cPLA2 were analyzed using LC-MS and clinical biochemical assays. RESULTS: The serum levels of cPLA2, eicosanoids (8-isoPGF2a, 11-dehydroTXB2 and 12-HETE) and 11-dehydroTXB2/6-Keto-PGF1a were significantly elevated in SH patients. The serum TSH levels were significantly correlated with the levels of cPLA2 (r=+0.65), 11-dehydroTXB2 (r=+0.32) and 11-dehydroTXB2/6-Keto-PGF1a (r=+0.37). After 3-month TRT, the serum levels of TSH, cPLA2 and the above-mentioned eicosanoids in SH patients were significantly decreased. CONCLUSION: The metabolism of eicosanoids is significantly altered in Chinese SH patients, and TRT can ameliorate the abnormalities of serum eicosanoid levels.

OBJECTIVE: Natural killer (NK) cells serve as primary immune surveillance and are partially regulated by combinations of killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) and their human leukocyte antigen-C (HLA-C) ligands. Alterations in NK cell activity have been associated with Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT). The aim of this study was to determine whether certain KIR/HLA-C genotype combinations play a role in HT pathogenesis. METHODS: The present study enrolled 107 unrelated HT patients and 108 random healthy individuals in a case-control study. Blood was collected for DNA extraction; typing of KIR genes and HLA-C alleles was performed by polymerase chain reaction with sequence specific primers (PCR-SSP), followed by electrophoresis on agarose gels. RESULTS: Among a panel of KIR2D/HLA-C genotype combinations, the frequency of KIR2DS2/HLA-C1 was significantly increased in HT patients compared to controls (33.64% vs. 12.96%, P<.001). To further analyze the precise genotype, we investigated inhibitory or activating KIR/HLA-C gene pairs when their corresponding activating or inhibitory KIR genes were absent in the 2 groups. Only the frequency of KIR2DS2(-)2DL2/3(+)HLA-C1(+) was significantly decreased in HT patients compared to controls (48.60% vs. 70.37%, P = .001). CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that KIR2DS2/HLA-C1 may correlate with HT pathogenesis. On the contrary, the predominance of KIR2DL2/3/HLA-C1 in the absence of KIR2DS2 suggests a potential inhibitory role in HT pathogenesis. In conclusion, our findings may further elucidate the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of HT and other autoimmune diseases. BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cardiovascular disease has been increasing worldwide. As a common pathogenic risk factor, dyslipidemia played a great role in the incidence and progress of these diseases. We investigated to achieve accurate and up-to-date information on the prevalence of dyslipidemia and its associations with other lipid-related diseases in rural North China. METHODS: Using a complex, multistage, probability sampling design, we conducted a large-scale cross-sectional study of 8528 rural participants aged over 18 years in Shandong Province. Prevalence and characteristics of dyslipidemia were demonstrated. The odds ratios between dyslipidemia types and lipid-related diseases were further analyzed by logistic regression. RESULTS: Among the overall population, 45.8 % suffered from dyslipidemia. The prevalence of lipid abnormality (including high and very high levels) was 18.6, 12.7, 9.8 and 12.7 % for total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides (TG), respectively. Among all participants with dyslipidemia, 23.9 % were aware, only 11.5 % were treated, 10.0 % were controlled. For subjects with dyslipidemia, the risk for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was highest with a 3.3-fold over that of non-dyslipidmia (OR = 3.30, P < 0.001); followed by hyperuricemia and diabetes mellitus (DM), while with 2-fold increase (OR = 1.99, P < 0.001; OR = 1.92, P < 0.001); with only 1.5-fold risk for atherosclerosis (AS) (OR = 1.47, P < 0.001). The presence of high cholesterol was mainly associated with AS, while abnormal TG was correlated with NAFLD and DM. CONCLUSIONS: Dyslipidemia has become a serious public health issue in rural North China. The rapid increase of high TC and incremental risk of high TG may contribute to the epidemic of AS, NAFLD and DM. It is imperative to develop individualized prevention and treatment guidelines according to dyslipidemia phenotypes.

Cyanobacteria are the primary colonizers and form a dominant component of soil photosynthetic communities in biological soil crusts. They are crucial in improving soil environments, namely accumulating soil carbon and nitrogen. Many classical studies have examined cyanobacterial diversity in desert crusts, but relatively few comprehensive molecular surveys have been conducted. We used 454 pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA to investigate cyanobacterial composition and distribution on regional scales in the Gurbantunggut Desert. The relationship between cyanobacterial distribution and environmental factors was also explored. A total of 24,973 cyanobacteria partial 16S rRNA gene sequences were obtained, and 507OTUs were selected, as most OTUs had very few reads. Among these, 347 OTU sequences were of cyanobacteria origin, belonging to Oscillatoriales, Nostocales, Chroococcales, and uncultured cyanobacterium clone, respectively. Microcoleus vaginatus, Chroococcidiopsis spp. and M. steenstrupii were the dominant species in most areas of the Gurbantunggut Desert. Compared with other desert, the Gurbantunggut Desert differed in the prominence of Chroococcidiopsis spp. and lack of Pseudanabaenales. Species composition and abundance of cyanobacteria also showed distinct variations. Soil texture, precipitation, and nutrients and salt levels affected cyanobacterial distribution. Increased precipitation was helpful in improving cyanobacterial diversity. A higher content of coarse sand promoted the colonization and growth of Oscillatoriales and some phylotypes of Chroococcales. The fine-textured soil with higher nutrients and salts supported more varied populations of cyanobacteria, namely some heterocystous cyanobacteria. The results suggested that the Gurbantunggut Desert was rich in cyanobacteria and that precipitation was a primary regulating factor for cyanobacterial composition on a regional scale.

Biological soil crusts (BSCs) are common and play critical roles in semi-arid and arid ecosystems. Bacteria, as an important community in BSCs, play critical roles in biochemical processes. However, how bacterial diversity and community change in different successional stages of BSCs is still unknown. We used 454 pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA to investigate the bacterial composition and community, and the relationships between bacterial composition and environmental factors were also explored. In different successional stages of BSCs, the number of bacteria operational taxonomic units (OTUs) detected in each sample ranged from 2572 to 3157. Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Bacteroidetes were dominant in BSCs, followed by Firmicutes, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria. At the successional stages of BSCs, bacterial communities, OTU composition and their relative abundance notably differentiated, and Cyanobacteria, especially Microcoleus vaginatus, dominated algal crust and lichen crust, and were the main C-fixing bacteria in BSCs. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes increased with the development of BSCs. OTUs related to Planomicrobium Chinese, Desulfobulbus sp., Desulfomicrobium sp., Arthrobacter sp., and Ahhaerbacter sp. showed higher relative abundance in bare sand than other successional stages of BSCs, while relative abundance of Sphingomonas sp. Niastella sp., Pedobacter, Candidatus solobacter, and Streptophyta increased with the development of BSCs. In successional stages of BSCs, bacterial OTUs composition demonstrated strong correlations with soil nutrients, soil salts, and soil enzymes. Additionally, variation of bacterial composition led to different ecological function. In bare sand, some species were related with mineral metabolism or promoting plant growth, and in algal crust and lichen crust, C-fixing bacteria increased and accumulated C to the desert soil. In later developed stage of BSCs, bacteria related with decomposition of organic matter, such as Sphingomonas sp. Niastella sp., Pedobacter, and Candidatus solobacter increased. Therefore, bacterial community composition and their key ecological roles shifted to the development of BSCs.

BACKGROUND: Population-based studies have demonstrated that subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis (OR = 1.9). However, this connection cannot be entirely explained by dyslipidemia accompanied by SCH. Lipid peroxidation also plays an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. In this study, we aimed to evaluate oxidative stress in SCH patients, as measured according to concentrations of hydroxy-octadecadienoic acids (HODEs) and hydroxy-eicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs) in both plasma and low density lipoproteins (LDL). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The concentrations of HODEs and HETEs in both LDL and plasma were examined in euthyroid (n = 10), mild SCH (4.5 ≤ TSH < 10 mU/L, n = 10), and significant SCH (TSH ≥ 10 mU/L, n = 10) subjects, using a liquid chromatograph-electrospray ionization- mass spectrometer. Then, we explored the relationship among LDL oxidation, TSH levels, and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), a biomarker of subclinical atherosclerosis. RESULTS: Serum LDL-C levels and mean-IMT in the significant SCH group were higher than in the euthyroid group (p < 0.05). The HODE and HETE concentrations clearly increased in the significant SCH patients compared with the euthyroid subjects, but there was no difference between the mild SCH and euthyroid groups. Among all subjects, linear and significant positive correlations were identified between TSH and mean-IMT after adjustment for confounding factors (r = 0.480, p = 0.018). Both 9-HODE (r = 0.376, p = 0.041) and 13-HODE (r = 0.447, p = 0.013) in LDL were linearly and positively correlated with TSH. The concentrations of HODEs (both 9-HODE and 13-HODE) in LDL were much higher in the thickened IMT group than in the normal IMT group (p = .017 and 0.015, respectively). HODEs in LDL were also positively associated with mean-IMT. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings showed that lipid peroxidation was higher in the significant SCH patients than in the euthyroid subjects, which suggested that qualitative as well as quantitative changes in serum lipids resulting from SCH may add to atherosclerosis risk.

Postmenopausal women, a population with increased risk of atherosclerosis, also have an appreciable risk of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH). The current study sought an association between serum thyrotropin (TSH), the biomarker of SCH and atherosclerosis lipid profile changes. A total of 45 postmenopausal women with SCH and 27 healthy women matched by age and body mass index were enrolled in this observational study. Serum lipid profiles and thyroid function were assessed. Compared with healthy controls, the serum levels of TC, TG, LDL-c and oxidized LDL (oxLDL) in SCH were increased by ~22.8%, 29.6%, 30.5% and 23.2%, respectively. TSH was positively correlated with TC, LDL-c and oxLDL in all of the study subjects after adjusting for age and BMI. In particular, the positive correlation remained significant after adjusting for serum FT3 and FT4. When further stratified by TSH levels, both the subgroup of mildly elevated TSH (4.78-9.99 mU/L) and overtly elevated TSH (>10.00 mU/L) exhibited significantly higher serum levels of TC, TG, LDL-c and oxLDL compared to the normal TSH subgroup. Path analysis revealed that the total effects of TSH on TC (total effectsTC,TSH = 0.4323) included a significant direct effect (direct effectTC,TSH = 0.4932) and an indirect effect via an intermediary variable (FT3, FT4). Furthermore, TC exhibited a direct effect on LDL-c, as did LDL-c on oxLDL. In conclusion, even with a mild elevation of serum TSH, SCH is associated with atherogenic lipid profiles in postmenopausal women independent of thyroid hormones.
