The metabolite urolithin A, a metabolite of the dietary polyphenol ellagic acid (EA), has significant health benefits for humans. However, studies on the gut microbiota involved in ellagic acid metabolism are limited. In this study, we conducted in vitro fermentation of EA using human intestinal microbiome combined with antibiotics (vancomycin, polymyxin B sulfate, and amphotericin B). Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis demonstrated that the production capacity of urolithin A by gut microbiota co-treated with polymyxin B sulfate and amphotericin B (22.39 µM) was similar to that of untreated gut microbiota (24.26 µM). Macrogenomics (high-throughput sequencing) was used to analyze the composition and structure of the gut microbiota. The results showed that the abundance of Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium adolescentis, and Bifidobacterium bifidum in the gut microbiota without antibiotic treatment or co-treated with polymyxin B sulfate and amphotericin B during EA fermentation was higher than that in other antibiotic treatment gut microbiota. Therefore, B. longum, B. adolescentis, and B. bifidum may be new genera involved in the conversion of EA to urolithin A. In conclusion, the study revealed unique interactions between polyphenols and gut microbiota, deepening our understanding of the relationship between phenolic compounds like EA and the gut microbiota. These findings may contribute to the development of gut bacteria as potential probiotics for further development. BACKGROUND: Mass screening and treatment (MSAT) for malaria elimination lacks an ideal diagnostic tool to allow sensitive and affordable test of the target population in the field. This study evaluated whether Capture and Ligation Probe-PCR (CLIP-PCR) could be used in a field MSAT in Laiza City, Myanmar. METHODS: On day 0, two dried blood spots were collected from each participant. On day 1, all samples were screened for Plasmodium in a 20 m2 laboratory with workbench, a biosafety cabinet, a refrigerator, a benchtop shaking incubator and a qPCR machine, by four technicians using CLIP-PCR with sample pooling, at a health clinic of the Chinese bordering town of Nabang. On day 2, all positives were followed up and treated. RESULTS: Of 15,038 persons (65% of the total population) screened, 204 (1.36%) were CLIP-PCR positives. Among them, 188, 14, and 2 were infected with Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium falciparum, and P. vivax/P. falciparum mix, respectively. The testing capacity was 538 persons/day, with a cost of US$0.92 /person. The proportion of submicroscopic infection was 64.7%. All positive individuals received treatment within 72 h after blood collection. CONCLUSION: Using CLIP-PCR in MSAT in low transmission settings can support the malaria elimination efforts in the China-Myanmar border region.

BACKGROUND: The social disparities in obesity may originate in early life or in adulthood, and the associations of socioeconomic position (SEP) with obesity could alter over time. It is unclear how lifetime-specific and life-course SEP influence adult obesity development in China. METHODS: Based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), three SEP-related indicators, including the father's occupational position and the participant's education and occupational position, were obtained. The life-course socioeconomic changes and a cumulative SEP score were established to represent the life-course SEP of the participants in the study. The growth mixture modeling was used to identify BMI trajectories in adulthood. Multinomial logistic regression was adopted to assess the associations between SEP and adult BMI trajectories. RESULTS: A total of 3,138 participants were included in the study. A positive correlation was found between the paternal occupational position, the participants' occupational position, education, and obesity in males, whereas an inverse correlation was observed among females. Males who experienced social upward mobility or remained stable high SEP during the follow-up had 2.31 and 2.52-fold risks of progressive obesity compared to those with a stable-low SEP. Among females, stable high SEP in both childhood and adulthood was associated with lower risks of progressive obesity (OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.43-0.94). Higher risks of obesity were associated with the life-course cumulative SEP score among males, while the opposite relationship was observed among females. CONCLUSIONS: The associations between life-course SEP and BMI development trajectories differed significantly by gender. Special emphasis should be placed on males experiencing upward and stable high socioeconomic change.

Myrosinase can hydrolyze glucosinolates to generate isothiocyanates, which have cancer prevention and anti-cancer properties. The main sources of myrosinase are cruciferous plants. To further improve the efficiency of isothiocyanates preparation, it is necessary to explore novel sources of myrosinases. In this study, we described a bacterium, Shewanella baltica Myr-37, isolated from marine mud, capable of producing a novel myrosinase (Smyr37) with a molecular weight of 100 kDa. The crude enzyme of Smyr37 showed the highest activity at 50 °C and pH 8.0. The sinigrin- and glucoraphanin-hydrolyzing activities of Smyr37 were 6.95 and 5.87 U/mg, respectively. Moreover, when the reaction temperature was 40 °C and pH was 7.0, the crude enzyme of Smyr37 could efficiently degrade glucoraphanin into sulforaphane within 25 min with a yield of 0.57 mg/mL. The corresponding conversion efficiency of sulforaphane from glucoraphanin was 89%. In summary, S. baltica Myr-37 myrosinase Smyr37, a novel myrosinase, can be used in the preparation of isothiocyanates.

BACKGROUND: Research has demonstrated that higher social support is associated with better psychological health, quality of life, cognition, activities of daily living and social participation, but the relationship between social support and sleep quality remains unknown. AIMS: This study aimed to assess the incidence of poor sleep quality, clarify the relationship between social support and sleep quality amongst stroke patients and determine whether anxiety and depression symptoms mediate this relationship. METHODS: We conducted a quantitative, cross-sectional study involving 238 patients with stroke (median age of 61 [range 29-87] years, 68.1% male) recruited from a comprehensive tertiary care hospital between September 2019 and January 2020. A self-administered, structured questionnaire was used for the survey. The mediating effect of anxiety and depression symptoms was assessed using the bootstrap method via Model 4 (parallel mediation) of the SPSS PROCESS macro. RESULTS: Results showed that the incidence of poor sleep quality amongst stroke patients was 65%. Mediation analysis showed that social support exerted significant direct effects on sleep quality, and anxiety and depression symptoms mediated the relationship between social support and sleep quality. CONCLUSION: Measures should be taken to enhance social support to improve the sleep quality of stroke patients.

OBJECTIVE: Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) can be caused by congenital HH (CHH), pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS), and pituitary injury (acquired HH). Gonadotropin therapy, typically administered every other day or twice a week, is commonly used to promote spermatogenesis. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of weekly gonadotropin therapy on spermatogenesis in patients with HH (n = 160). METHODS: The patients' diagnoses include Kallmann syndrome (KS) (n = 61), normosmic CHH (nCHH) (n = 34), PSIS (n = 48), and acquired HH (n = 17). The rate of successful spermatogenesis and median time to achieve spermatogenesis among these 4 subgroups were compared as well as between a weekly group (n = 95) and a twice-a-week group (n = 223) of CHH patients. RESULTS: Once-a-week gonadotropin therapy resulted in 74% (119/160) of HH patients achieving spermatogenesis with significantly increased testicular volume and total testosterone levels (P < .001). The median period of spermatogenesis was 13 (interquartile range[IQR] 11.4-14.6) months. Larger basal testicular volume (P = .0142) was an independent predictor for earlier sperm appearance. Six spontaneous pregnancies occurred. Compared with the twice-a-week regimen for spermatogenesis, the weekly injection group had a similar median time of sperm appearance (14 [IQR, 11.6-16.4] vs 15 [IQR, 13.5-16.5] months), success rate (78% [74/95] vs 64% [143/223]), sperm concentration (20.9 [IQR, 5.0-46.3] vs 11.7 [IQR, 2.1-24.4] million/mL), and progressive sperm motility (40.8 ± 27.3% vs 36.9% ± 20.2%). CONCLUSION: Weekly gonadotropin therapy is effective in inducing spermatogenesis, similar to that of twice-a-week therapy. A larger basal testicular size was a favorable indicator for earlier spermatogenesis.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic disease is a serious health problem worldwide. Given that health care resources are limited, a comprehensive, effective, and affordable way is needed to provide insights to prevent chronic diseases. System dynamics models provide a comprehensive and systematic method that can predict results over time. These models can simulate and predict appropriate prevention measures for chronic diseases to determine the best practice. METHODS: Two researchers (Y.W., B.H.) independently searched databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase) for full-text articles published from January 2000 through February 2021. A PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) 2020-compliant search was carried out to review system dynamics models of chronic disease prevention. A total of 34 articles were included in our study. RESULTS: We divided the prevention measures of system dynamics models into 2 main categories: upstream prevention and downstream prevention. Upstream prevention measures include lifestyle (eg, tobacco control, balanced diet, mental health, moderate exercise), obesity prevention, and social factors. Downstream prevention measures include clinical treatment of chronic diseases. Results showed that effective upstream prevention measures could reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases, and downstream prevention measures could reduce the incidence of complications, improve quality of life, prolong life, save medical costs, and reduce mortality. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, our systematic review is the first to evaluate the application of system dynamics models in preventing chronic diseases. Such models can provide effective simulations. Hence, we can use system dynamics models to design and implement effective prevention measures for people with chronic diseases.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate whether fear of progression mediates the association between illness perception and quality of life among interstitial lung disease patients. BACKGROUND: So far, the physiological treatment of interstitial lung disease is limited. In addition to immunosuppressants such as glucocorticoids, two anti-fibrosis drugs (pirfenidone and nintedanib) have shown moderately beneficial effects on slowing the progression of interstitial lung disease fibrosis. However, none of these drugs has shown reliable or strong beneficial effects on improving quality of life. Psychological care and mental health support strategies focusing on improving patients' quality of life are particularly important. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: A convenience sample of patients suffering from interstitial lung disease were enrolled from August to December 2019. Data including sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, illness perception, fear of progression and quality of life were collected. The descriptive analysis and Pearson correlations were analysed by SPSS 26.0 (IBM Corp.). PROCESS v3.4 (by Andrew F. Hayes) macro was applied to analyse the mediating effects. We used the STROBE checklist to report the results. RESULTS: Both illness perception and fear of progression were correlated with quality of life. Fear of progression mediated the association between illness perception and quality of life. The indirect effect was 0.121, and the proportion of intermediary effect in the main effect was 26.36%. CONCLUSION: Interstitial lung disease patients experience relatively poor quality of life and fear of progression exerts a mediating role between illness perception and quality of life. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study alerts medical staff to pay attention to negative illness perception and excessive fear, which is helpful to formulate effective interventions to manage interstitial lung disease patients' quality of life.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The study aims to explore and describe nurses' behaviours towards physical restraint (PR) use in intensive care units (ICUs) and identify key characteristics of these experiences. BACKGROUND: Patients within the ICU are always vulnerable, which requires a thoughtful deliberation when employing PR in ethically laden situations. Considering that the qualitative study on nurses' behaviours towards PR use in ICUs is limited, a deep understanding of how nurses reason and restrict patients is necessary before developing a minimizing programme in hospitals. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted in this paper. Data were collected by 24 semistructured, in-depth and individual interviews about PR, where 24 nurses were drawn from six ICUs of four hospital settings from a comprehensive tertiary care hospital in Qingdao. The QSR NVivo 11.0 software program was used to manage the interview data, and data analysis was guided by the Qualitative Analysis Guide of Leuven. The checklist of Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Studies was followed as a guideline in reporting the study. RESULTS: Regarding PR, nurses' behaviours start with a hazard perception, followed by hesitation about whether to restrict the patient. They would usually decide to apply PR when they think that no other choice to control the situation is available. Then, they would reflect on and rationalize their behaviours. Nurses, intensivists, patients and their families participate in and affect this process directly or indirectly. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses' behaviours towards PR use comprise a series of complex processes centred on safety. Nurses' decision making should be performed with the participation of intensivists, patients and family caregivers.

We previously demonstrated that cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) promoted the proliferation of gallbladder cancer (GBC) cells, but the mechanism is not clear. Neuropilin-1 (NRP-1) plays an important role in various malignancies as transmembrane glycoprotein. Our goal was to reveal the relationship between CAFs and NRP-1 and their potential functions in GBC. In this study, we found NRP-1 was overexpressed in GBC tissue, associated with poor survival and was up-regulated by CAFs. The cytokine array cluster analysis revealed IL-8 secreted by CAFs facilitated the up-regulation of NRP-1 in tumour cells. NRP-1 knockdown suppressed tumour growth in vivo. Gene expression microarray analysis showed 581 differentially regulated genes under NRP-1 knockdown conditions. Ingenuity pathway analysis demonstrated that NRP-1 knockdown may inhibit tumour progression by affecting cell proliferation. We then confirmed that NRP-1 knockdown in NOZ and GBC-SD cells significantly inhibited cell proliferation. Additionally, the IL-8 mediated MDM2 and CCNA2 expression were affected by NRP-1 knockdown. Our findings suggested that NRP-1 was up-regulated by CAF-secreted IL-8, which subsequently promoted GBC cell proliferation, and these molecules may serve as useful prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for GBC.

RESUMO

Viral diseases severely affect crop yield and quality, thereby threatening global food security. Genetic improvement of plant virus resistance is essential for sustainable agriculture. In the last decades, several modern technologies were applied in plant antiviral engineering. Here we summarized breakthroughs of the two major antiviral strategies, RNA silencing and genome editing. RNA silencing strategy has been used in antiviral breeding for more than thirty years, and many crops engineered to stably express small RNAs targeting various viruses have been approved for commercial release. Genome editing technology has emerged in the past decade, especially CRISPR/Cas, which provides new methods for genetic improvement of plant virus resistance and accelerates resistance breeding. Finally, we discuss the potential of these technologies for breeding crops, and the challenges and solutions they may face in the future.

Here, a porous cobalt-organic framework with pillared layer structures, namely [Co3 OBA3 PTD(H2 O)2 ⋅ 2 DMA⋅H2 O]n (1, H2 OBA=4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid); PTD=6-(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine), was fabricated by using cobalt trinuclear nodes, low-cost carboxylic linker, and accessible nitrogen heterocyclic ligands. This compound exhibited a highly efficient solvatochromism towards CH2 Cl2 within one minute and can be used 200 times at least. The corresponding dropper detector was assembled as a practical sensor. Meanwhile, the porous Co3 O4 was obtained by a simple but effective annealing treatment. Electrochemical measurements confirm that this Co3 O4 material derived from compound 1 shows high and stable lithium storage capabilities (1081.75 mA h g-1 at 200 mA g-1 after 115 cycles) and excellent rate properties.

Objective: Egg is the vital source for many nutrients. The present study aimed to evaluate how egg consumption contributes to body fat mass and fat distribution in general Chinese adults.Methods: In a representative study of Chinese adults, 2241 rural adults aged 18-80 years completed physical measurements and semi quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Body fat percentage (BF%) was estimated through validated Chinese-specific equations including age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), gender and their interaction.Results: The prevalence of excessive body fat and central obesity in males were 44.2% and 31.3%, lower than that in females (60.7% and 36.1%, p < 0.05). 37.3% of lean or normal-weight individuals by BMI experienced excessive body fat given their BF% and 43.5% were central obesity according to WC. In females, egg consumption was associated with better body fat mass and its distribution. Compared with non-consumers, individuals consumed egg >50 g/d had a 34% lower risk of central obesity (OR:0.66, 0.39-0.99) and 38% lower risk of excessive body fat (OR:0.62, 0.37-1.00). There were significant dose-response relationships between egg consumption and overweight with excessive body fat/central obesity (p for linear trend <0.05). However, these associations were not significant in males.Conclusion: Our findings underscore the necessity for future public health guidelines to assess body fat mass and distribution simultaneously in Chinese adults. Egg consumption might be beneficial for weight regulation, especially for overweight with excessive body fat/central obesity in females. Further research is warrant to establish the causal inference.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21OHD) typically suffer from short stature due to early exposure to adrenal-derived androgen. The aim of this study was to investigate whether adding aromatase inhibitor (AI) to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogue (GnRHa) and recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy would increase the height of patients with 21OHD. METHODS: This retrospective study included 15 patients with 21OHD. The AI/GnRHa/rhGH group consisted of 9 patients, who were treated with AI for at least 12 months in addition to GnRHa/rhGH therapy. The other 6 patients, who received GnRHa/rhGH therapy only, were defined as the GnRHa/rhGH group. RESULTS: Patients were 6.3±1.7 years old, and 7/15 of patients were male. Among them, 12 patients exhibited simple virilization type, and 3 patients were salt-wasting type. In the AI/GnRHa/rhGH group, patients were 6.6±2.0 years old when AI therapy was initiated. Their bone age was 5.9±2.2 years ahead of their chronological age. They received the AI letrizole for an average of 25.1 months (range, 12 to 37 months). In the GnRHa/rhGH group, the patients were 5.9±0.9 years old when they started GnRHa/rhGH therapy, and their bone age was 6.2±1.7 years ahead of their chronological age. Patients received GnRHa/rhGH therapy for an average of 24.5 months (range, 12 to 41 months). The predicted final height increased from 145.9±7.9 to 158.0±8.4 cm in the AI/GnRHa/rhGH group (P = .001, compared with the baseline) and from 141.7±2.7 to 150.7±4.7 cm in the GnRHa/rhGH group (P = .001, compared with the baseline). Bone age progression was 0.15±0.05 per year versus 0.44±0.13 per year in the two groups, respectively (P = .032). CONCLUSION: Addition of letrizole to GnRHa/rhGH therapy significantly delays bone maturation and may increase the final height.

PURPOSE: High-protein diets were popular in weight control. However, the role of protein intake in adiposity and related metabolic conditions among general populations is not clear. We aimed to evaluate the associations of protein intake with adiposity and glycaemic control among adult Chinese in a nationwide population-based survey. METHODS: The data were from China Health and Nutrition Survey 2009. A total of 9360 men and women aged 18 years or older were included. Body fat percentage was calculated using validated Chinese-specific equations. Dietary intake levels of macronutrients were evaluated by food-weighing approach combined with a 3-day food intake recall. RESULTS: Averagely, our participants have 12.5% energy intake from dietary protein. With multivariate adjustment including total energy intake, the odds ratios (95% CIs) of excessive adiposity (body fat percentage ≥ 20/30% for men/women), and central obesity (waist circumference ≥ 90/80 cm for men/women) were 1.51 (1.30, 1.75) and 1.40 (1.21, 1.62), respectively, comparing extreme quintiles of relative protein intake, while fat and carbohydrate were not associated with adiposity indices. Moreover, higher relative protein intake was associated with elevated concentration of fasting glucose (ß ± SE: 1.233 ± 0.583), fasting insulin (23.211 ± 9.191), glycated hemoglobin (1.057 ± 0.369), and insulin resistance indicated by homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (7.558 ± 2.928) (all P < 0.05). Further adjusting for body mass index attenuated the associations. CONCLUSION: In Chinese adults, higher habitual protein consumption may be associated with higher adiposity and worse glycaemic control, independent of total energy intake.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate an association between birth defects and exposure to sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particles ≤10 µm in an aerodynamic diameter (PM10) during early pregnancy in Xi'an, China. METHODS: Birth defect data were from the Birth Defects Monitoring System of Xi'an, and data on ambient air pollutants during 2010-15 were from the Xi'an Environmental Protection Bureau. A generalized additive model (GAM) was used to investigate the relationship between birth defects and ambient air pollutants. RESULTS: Among the 8865 cases with birth defects analyzed, the overall incidence of birth defects was 117.33 per 10 000 infants. Ambient air pollutant exposure during the first trimester increased the risk of birth defects by 10.3% per 10 µg/m3 increment of NO2 and 3.4% per 10 µg/m3 increment of PM10. No significant association was found between birth defects and SO2. Moreover, NO2 increased risk of neural tube defects, congenital heart disease, congenital polydactyly, cleft palate, digestive system abnormalities and gastroschisis, and PM10 was associated with congenital heart disease and cleft lip with or without cleft palate. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese women should avoid exposure to high levels of NO2 and PM10 during the first 3 months of pregnancy.

Recently, CRISPR-Cas (clustered, regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats-CRISPR-associated proteins) system has been used to produce plants resistant to DNA virus infections. However, there is no RNA virus control method in plants that uses CRISPR-Cas system to target the viral genome directly. Here, we reprogrammed the CRISPR-Cas9 system from Francisella novicida to confer molecular immunity against RNA viruses in Nicotiana benthamiana and Arabidopsis plants. Plants expressing FnCas9 and sgRNA specific for the cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) or tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) exhibited significantly attenuated virus infection symptoms and reduced viral RNA accumulation. Furthermore, in the transgenic virus-targeting plants, the resistance was inheritable and the progenies showed significantly less virus accumulation. These data reveal that the CRISPR/Cas9 system can be used to produce plant that stable resistant to RNA viruses, thereby broadening the use of such technology for virus control in agricultural field.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To determine whether radical resection can benefit patients with advanced gallbladder adenocarcinoma using a Bayesian network (BN) with clinical data. METHODS: In total, 362 patients who had undergone surgical treatment of gallbladder adenocarcinoma at a tertiary institute were evaluated to establish two BN models using a tree-augmented naïve Bayes algorithm. We then chose 250 patients with T3-4N0-2M0 stage gallbladder adenocarcinoma to test the posterior probability after the surgical type was taken into account. RESULTS: In total, 170 patients (≤7 months) and 137 patients (>7 months) were correctly classified in the median survival time model (accuracy, 84.81%), and 204 patients (≤12 months), 15 patients (12-36 months), 17 patients (36-60 months), and 34 patients (>60 months) were correctly classified in the 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival model (accuracy, 74.59%), respectively. Every posterior probability in the two models upregulated the ratio of the longer survival time and suggested a better prognosis for gallbladder adenocarcinoma that can be improved by R0 resection. CONCLUSIONS: These BN models indicate that stages T4 and N2 gallbladder adenocarcinoma are not contraindications for surgery and that R0 resection can improve survival in patients with advanced gallbladder adenocarcinoma.

Both the obesity rate and pocket money are rising among children in China. This study examined family correlates of children's pocket money, associations of pocket money with eating behaviors and weight status, and how the associations may be modified by schools' unhealthy food restrictions in urban China. Data were collected in 2015 from 1648 students in 16 primary and middle schools in four mega-cities in China (4 schools/city): Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Xi'an. Cluster robust negative binomial regression models were fit to assess family correlates of pocket money, associations of pocket money with child eating behaviors and weight outcomes, and possible modifying effects of schools' unhealthy food restrictions. Sixty-nine percent of students received pocket money weekly. Students received more pocket money if mothers frequently ate out of home (IRR=2.28 [1.76, 2.94]) and/or family rarely had dinner together (IRR=1.42, 95%=[1.01, 1.99]). Students got less pocket money if parents were concerned about child's future health due to unhealthy eating (IRR=0.56 [0.32,0.98]). Students with more pocket money more frequently consumed (by 25-89%) sugary beverages, snacks, fast food, or at street food stalls, and were 45-90% more likely to be overweight/obese. Associations of pocket money with unhealthy eating and overweight/obesity were weaker in schools with unhealthy food restrictions. Pocket money is a risk factor for unhealthy eating and obesity in urban China. School policies may buffer pocket money's negative influence on students' eating and weight status.

OBJECTIVES: Obesity classification using body mass index (BMI) may miss subjects with elevated body fat percentage (BF%) and related metabolic risk factors. We aimed to evaluate whether BF% calculated by equations could provide more information about metabolic risks, in addition to BMI classification, in a cross-sectional rural Chinese population. METHODS: A total of 2,990 men and women aged 18-80 years were included in this study. BF% was calculated using previously validated Chinese-specific equations. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the updated National Cholesterol Education Program Panel III criteria for Asian Americans. RESULTS: In total, 33.6% men and 32.9% women were overweight/obese according to BMI classification. Among those within the normal BMI range, 25.4% men and 54.7% women were indicated as overweight or obese given their elevated BF% (men: BF% ≥ 20%; women: BF% ≥ 30%). In both men and women, compared with those with normal BMI and BF% (NBB), subjects with normal BMI but elevated BF% (NBOB) were more likely to carry abnormal serum lipid profile and to have higher risks of metabolic syndrome. The multivariable adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for metabolic syndrome were 5.45 (2.37-9.53, P < 0.001) and 5.65 (3.36-9.52, P < 0.001) for men and women, respectively. Moreover, the women with NBOB also showed higher blood pressure and serum uric acid than women with NBB. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggested that high BF% based on equations may indicate adverse metabolic profiles among rural Chinese adults with a normal BMI.
