AIM AND OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study explores why breast cancer patients do not share disease-related information with their dependent children. BACKGROUND: 'Open' communication between breast cancer patients and their children is beneficial to both. However, some still try to avoid discussing their diagnosis and related information with their children. Some worries lie in communicating with dependent children, but the underlying cause remains unclear. DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive study. METHODS: Semi-structured interview was used in this study. Twenty breast cancer patients with children (aged 8-18 years) were recruited at two urban tertiary hospitals in mainland China. Qualitative content analysis was conducted to analyse and identify themes and subthemes. This study followed the COREQ checklist for qualitative studies. RESULTS: Three main themes were identified: (1) Uncertainty about the future: Their struggles with cancer remain a sensitive subject with their children. They described the uncertainty surrounding their disease prognosis and their children's response. They were also unsure whether, when and how to inform their children of their conditions; (2) Useless and risky for their children to know the truth: They considered it useless because their children can neither understand nor change the existing facts. They were concerned that it could affect their children's emotional state, character and academic performance; and (3) All for their children's sake: They were willing to take care of their affairs without troubling their dependent children as much as possible. CONCLUSION: Most mothers delayed communicating disease-related information to their dependent children. However, they often underestimated children's abilities and ignored their thoughts and wishes. Motherhood leads to avoidance and concealment in discussing health issues with their children. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Mothers should try to understand their children's views towards cancer earlier. Healthcare professionals, especially nurses, should provide further consultation and intervention services to assist mothers and their children.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a multifactorial and polygenetic disease, although its exact etiology remains poorly understood. The objective of this study was to identify key biomarkers and potential molecular mechanisms in the development of T2D. Human RNA-Seq datasets across different tissues (GSE18732, GSE41762, and GSE78721) were collected from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between T2D and controls were identified using differential analysis. A total of 90 overlapping DEGs were identified, among which YTHDF2, DDX21, and MDM2 were considered as key genes due to their central positions in the PPI network and the same regulatory pattern in T2D. Logistic regression analysis showed that low expression of the key genes increased the risk of T2D. Enrichment analysis revealed that the key genes are involved in various important biological functions and signaling pathways including Notch, Fork head box O (FOXO), and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)-Akt. RT-qPCR and Western blot analysis showed that all three key genes were down-regulated in pancreatic islets of both prediabetic and diabetic mouse models. Finally, the insulin-sensitizer, pioglitazone was used to treat db/db mice and immunofluorescence analysis showed that the expression of all three key genes was significantly down-regulated in db/db islets, an effect that was overcome by pioglitazone treatment. Together, these results suggest that the identified key genes could be involved in the development of T2D and serve as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for this disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the dietary behaviours, physical activity (PA) and quality of life (QoL) of childhood cancer survivors (CCS) in Mainland China and explore the relationships between these behaviours and QoL. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 181 CCS from three Grade-A tertiary hospitals in Guangzhou. Survivors completed questionnaires assessing their dietary behaviours, PA and QoL. RESULTS: Only 2.2%, 7.7% and 2.2% of CCS reported frequent soft drinks, sugar and fast food intake, which were lower compared to CCS in Western studies. Most survivors (72.9%) failed to drink milk daily, and many (54.7%) were picky eating. Sixty percent of CCS reported less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) time than 60 min/day recommended by WHO. Picky eating was significantly associated with lower overall (p < 0.001), physical (p < 0.001) and psychosocial (p < 0.001) QoL. MVPA was significantly positively associated with overall (p < 0.05) and psychosocial (p < 0.01) QoL. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese CCS engaged better dietary behaviours of less soft drinks, sugar and fast food consumption, but many were picky eaters and did not meet milk intake and PA recommendations. Early behavioural interventions aimed at increasing the dietary diversity and MVPA level of this population should be taken to improve their QoL.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on orthodontic tooth movement and its correlation with the levels of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). METHODS: This split-mouth design study included 12 patients scheduled for the extraction of both upper first premolars. Patients were randomly selected for experimental group that received left- or right-side radiation with a diode laser (810 nm wavelength, 100 mW power output, 6.29 J/cm2 energy density). Laser treatment was applied on days 0, 7, 14, and 21, after loading the canine retraction forces. GCF concentrations of IL-1ß, RANKL, and OPG were analyzed. The upper arch of each patient was scanned with an intraoral scanner to assess tooth movement. RESULTS: The cumulative tooth movement over 28 days was significantly higher in the laser group than in the control group. We observed significant reductions in OPG levels and increases in IL-1ß and RANKL levels in GCF samples on the experimental sides. CONCLUSION: With the parameter settings used in this study, LLLT could, to some extent, lead to changes in bone metabolism, which could accelerate orthodontic tooth movement. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Since the first case of the pneumonia caused by 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is found in Wuhan, there have been more than 70,000 cases reported in China. This study aims to perform the meta-analysis of risk factors for the case fatality rate (CFR) of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). DESIGN AND METHODS: We have searched PubMed, Google scholar and medRxiv for the cohort studies involving risk factors for the CFR of COVID-19. This meta-analysis compares the risk factors of CFR between fatal patients and non-fatal patients. RESULTS: Two cohort studies are included in this study. After comparing the patients between fatal cases and non-fatal cases, several important factors are found to significantly increase the CFR in patients with COVID-19, and include the age ranging 60-70 (OR = 1.85; 95% CI = 1.62 to 2.11; P < .00001) and especially≥70 (OR = 8.45; 95% CI = 7.47 to 9.55; P < .00001), sex of male (OR = 1.88; 95% CI = 1.30 to 2.73; P = .0008), occupation of retirees (OR = 4.27; 95% CI = 2.50 to 7.28; P < .00001), and severe cases (OR = 691.76; 95% CI = 4.82 to 99,265.63; P = .01). As the advancement of early diagnosis and treatment, the CFR after January 21 (or 22), 2020 is substantially decreased in COVID-19 than before (OR = 0.21; 95% CI = 0.19 to 0.24; P < .00001). CONCLUSIONS: Several factors are confirmed to significantly improve the CFR in patients with COVID-19, which is very important for the treatment and good prognosis of these patients.

Background: Oxidative stress-induced mitochondrial damage is the major cause of cardiomyocyte dysfunction. Therefore, the maintenance of mitochondrial function, which is regulated by mitochondrial quality control (MQC), is necessary for cardiomyocyte homeostasis. This study aimed to explore the underlying mechanisms of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) function and its relationship with MQC. Methods: A hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress model was established using H9c2 cardiomyocytes treated with or without NAC prior to oxidative stress stimulation. Autophagy with light chain 3 (LC3)-green fluorescent protein (GFP) assay, reactive oxygen species (ROS) with the 2',7'-dichlorodi hydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) fluorescent, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content assay, and a mitochondrial membrane potential detection were used to evaluate mitochondrial dynamics in H2O2-treated H9c2 cardiomyocytes, with a focus on the involvement of MQC regulated by NAC. Cell apoptosis was analyzed using caspase-3 activity assay and Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate (V-FITC)/propidium iodide (PI) double staining. Results: We observed that NAC improved cell viability, reduced ROS levels, and partially restored optic atrophy 1 (OPA1) protein expression under oxidative stress. Following transfection with a specific OPA1-small interfering RNA, the mitophagy, mitochondrial dynamics, mitochondrial functions, and cardiomyocyte apoptosis were evaluated to further explore the mechanisms of NAC. Our results demonstrated that NAC attenuated cardiomyocyte apoptosis via the ROS/OPA1 axis and protected against oxidative stress-induced mitochondrial damage via the regulation of OPA1-mediated MQC. Conclusions: NAC ameliorated the injury to H9c2 cardiomyocytes caused by H2O2 by promoting the expression of OPA1, consequently improving mitochondrial function and decreasing apoptosis.

OBJECTIVES: To use H9c2 cardiomyocytes to establish a diabetic cardiomyopathic model by exposing these cells to high glucose (HG), followed by treating them with melatonin (MEL) or plasmid vectors overexpressing FUN14 Domain Containing 1 (FUNDC1). METHODS: We employed quantitative real-time PCR, mitochondrial staining, and biochemical assays to measure the activity of various antioxidant and mitochondrial complex functions under various treatment conditions. KEY FINDINGS: Our results showed that HG induced the expression of FUNDC1 and increased mitochondrial oxidative stress and fragmentation, while MEL treatment reversed most of these pathological effects. Moreover, HG exposure activated dynamin-related protein 1 expression and its translocation to mitochondria. Modulation of AMP-activated protein kinase level was found to be another pathological hallmark. In silico molecular docking, analysis revealed that MEL could directly bind the catalytic groove of FUNDC1 through Van der Waal's force and hydrogen bonding. Finally, MEL ameliorated diabetic cardiomyopathy-induced mitochondrial injury through FUNDC1 in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperglycemia induced mitochondrial fragmentation and altered electron transport chain complex functions, which could be ameliorated by MEL treatment, suggesting its potential as a cardiovascular therapeutic.

BACKGROUND: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of varicella-zoster infection and tends to occur in older people. All patients treated with a single regimen have not achieved consistent success across all current study protocols, and multimodal combination regimens still need to be explored. METHODS: A total of 111 patients with PHN were randomly divided into drug group (group A), thoracic paravertebral nerve block group (group B), thoracic paravertebral nerve block combined with acupuncture group (group C), with 37 cases in each group. Group A: received oral gabapentin capsules and external lidocaine gel plaster; group B: combined with thoracic paravertebral nerve block based on group A; group C: combined with acupuncture based on group B. The primary outcome was effective rate, and secondary outcomes included pain sensation score (numerical rating scale), SF-36 quality of life score, and sleep quality. RESULTS: Before treatment, there were no significant differences in numerical rating scale value, SF-36 quality of life score, and sleep quality level among the 3 groups (Pâ >â .05). After 12 weeks of treatment, the total effective rate of treatment of patients in group C (91.43%) was higher than that in group B (77.14%), and significantly higher than that in group A (51.43%) (Pâ <â .05). CONCLUSION: Based on drug treatment combined with thoracic paravertebral nerve block and acupuncture, the treatment of PHN in the elderly can quickly and effectively relieve pain, improve the quality of life of patients, and improve the quality of sleep.

Acute cardiac dysfunction caused by stroke-heart syndrome (SHS) is the second leading cause of stroke-related death. The inflammatory response plays a significant role in the pathophysiological process of cardiac damage. However, the mechanisms underlying the brain-heart interaction are poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed to analysis the immunological characterization and identify inflammation therapeutic targets of SHS. We analyzed gene expression data of heart tissue 24 hours after induction of ischemia stoke by MCAO or sham surgery in a publicly available dataset (GSE102558) from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Bioinformatics analysis revealed 138 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in myocardium of MCAO-treated compared with sham-treated mice, among which, immune and inflammatory pathways were enriched. Analysis of the immune cells infiltration showed that the natural killer cell populations were significantly different between the two groups. We identified five DIREGs, Aplnr, Ccrl2, Cdkn1a, Irak2, and Serpine1 and found that their expression correlated with specific populations of infiltrating immune cells in the cardiac tissue. RT-qPCR and Western blot methods confirmed significant changes in the expression levels of Aplnr, Cdkn1a, Irak2, and Serpine1 after MCAO, which may serve as therapeutic targets to prevent cardiovascular complications after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have reported that costoclavicular blocks (CCBs) can consistently block almost all branches of the brachial plexus while sparing the phrenic nerve and provide effective analgesia after shoulder surgery. We aimed to compare the efficacy of the CCB with that of the interscalene block (ISB) as the sole blocking technique for shoulder surgery. METHODS: A total of 212 patients undergoing elective arthroscopic shoulder surgery were randomized to receive an ISB or CCB based on a non-inferiority design. All patients received titration sedation with propofol under monitored anesthesia during surgery. The primary outcomes were the proportion of patients with complete motor blockade of the suprascapular nerve (SSN) and incidence of hemidiaphragmatic paralysis (HDP). The secondary outcomes included block-related variables, complications, and postoperative pain scores. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with complete motor blockade of the SSN at 20 min between the CCB and ISB groups (53% vs. 66%) exceeded the predefined non-inferiority margin of -5%, but was comparable at 30 min (87% vs. 91%). The CCB resulted in a significantly lower incidence of HDP (7.55% vs. 92.45%), Horner's syndrome (0% vs. 18.87%), and dyspnea (0% vs. 10.38%) than the ISB. None of the patients experienced failed blocks or required conversion to general anesthesia. Pain scores were comparable between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound-guided CCBs may be comparable to ISBs, with fewer unfavorable complications in patients with impaired lung function undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

The purposes were to evaluate kinetics in lower limbs using single leg countermovement jump (SLCMJ) and to identify the differences in SLCMJ kinetics between sprinting fast players and sprinting slow players in elite university female soccer players. Seventeen participants at the national tournament level completed the survey. SLCMJ and 30 m sprinting tests were performed. A force-plate was used to collect the data of the SLCMJ test. Significant differences of concentric maximum rate of force development (RFD), concentric RFD, concentric RFD/body weight (BW), peak net takeoff force/BW, peak power, and peak power/BW existed between both legs during the SLCMJ among all the participants. For further analysis, the participants were divided into fast group and slow group based on sprinting performance. Significant differences existed between the two groups in concentric peak velocity (nondominant, p = 0.028) and vertical velocity at takeoff (nondominant, p = 0.021). Concentric maximum RFD (p = 0.036) was significantly different between both legs in the slow group. Among elite university female soccer players, the players who presented more increased asymmetry of kinetic characteristics of jumping, also showed weak sprinting performance. Moreover, the players presented the best performance in velocity of the jumping variables and also had the best sprinting performance. Coaches and players should focus on keeping inter-limb balance and developing jumping velocity to improve sports performance. In future, the cause-and-effect relationship between jumping and sprinting should be identified.

The influence of national health level in the stability and sustainable development of national society is increasingly prominent. The purpose of this study is to examine whether, when, and how national fitness policies exert influence on national health. Panel data from 2008 to 2017 of 30 Chinese provinces (cities) (except the Tibet autonomous region) were used to systematically reveal the direct impact of national fitness policies on national health and its characteristics in different regions, as well as the interaction mechanisms of human capital and finance health expenditures in public sports. This study found that first, national fitness policies had a positive effect on adult health. Second, sports human capital weakens the health effect of national fitness policies, while public finance health expenditures strengthen this effect. Lastly, the health effect of national fitness policies varies significantly across regions due to uneven regional economic development, and the differences in the effects on different age groups (adults and children) are equally pronounced. This study suggests that national fitness public service system and diverse national fitness plans improving national health level are important for a new dynamic balance and high quality coordinated development in both Chinese economic growth and social welfare.

Tooth movement is the core of orthodontics. Osteogenesis of the tension side under orthodontic force has great significance on tooth movement and stability, which involves complex mechanical and biological signal transduction. However, the mechanism remains unclear. Through in vitro cell studies, we observed the increased expression levels of osteogenesis-related factors and autophagy-related factors during the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells induced by orthodontic force. The change trend of autophagy-related factors and osteogenesis-related factors is similar, which indicates the involvement of autophagy in osteogenesis. In the study of autophagy-related gene ATG7 silenced cells, the expression level of autophagy was significantly inhibited, and the expression level of osteogenesis-related factors also decreased accordingly. Through drug regulation, we observed that the increase of autophagy level could effectively promote osteogenic differentiation, while the decrease of the autophagy level inhibited this process to some extent. Therefore, autophagy plays an important role in the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells induced by orthodontic force, which provides a novel idea useful for orthodontic treatment in promoting periodontal tissue remodeling and accelerating tooth movement.

Background: Childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) may suffer from a multitude of health impairments, resulting in a compromised quality of life (QoL). This review's objective was to examine CCSs' adherence to supervised exercise training interventions and the impact of these interventions on health outcomes. Methods: The following databases were searched in May 2022: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. The included studies were limited to randomized controlled trials (RCTs), published in English involving CCSs aged 18 years and below. Results: Nine RCTs (n = 642 participants) were included in the systematic review, and seven of them (n = 551 participants) were included in the meta-analysis. Both the mean retention rate and adherence to the supervised exercise interventions were 87%. Supervised exercise interventions significantly improved muscle strength (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 1.42, p = 0.03), level of daily physical activity (SMD = 1.05, p < 0.001), body mass index (BMI) (mean difference (MD) = 1.06, p = 0.03), and fatigue (SMD = −0.44, p < 0.001), while there was no statistical significance in the quality of life (QoL) (SMD = 0.21, p = 0.20). Conclusions: The adherence of CCSs to supervised exercise interventions is high, and supervised exercise interventions are safe and effective.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) are at increased risk of chronic health conditions, which could be controlled with health behaviors. However, the health behaviors and related factors of Chinese CCSs remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to examine multiple health behaviors among Chinese CCSs and explore the individual, interpersonal, and home environmental factors affecting health behaviors. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 204 participants from 3 grade-A tertiary hospitals in Guangzhou, China. Participants provided data on health behaviors (smoking, drinking, drug use, screen time, internet addiction, dietary behaviors, physical activity, and sleep behaviors) and their determining factors. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Chinese CCSs reported low rates of smoking, drinking, and drug use (0%-6.4%), but only 51% of survivors met screen time recommendations, and 24.5% of them had Internet addiction. Few survivors reported frequent soft-drink, sugar, and fast-food intake (2.0 to 7.4%), but many were finicky eaters (55.4%) or seldom drank milk (41.7%). In addition, 67.6% and 47.5% of survivors did not meet physical activity and sleep time recommendations. Childhood cancer survivors' health behaviors were influenced by the individual (age, education level, and time since diagnosis), interpersonal (peer and family support), and home environmental (residential location, parents' educations level, and household income) factors. CONCLUSIONS: There were suboptimal health behaviors among Chinese CCSs. Targeted interventions should consider their individual, interpersonal, and home environmental factors. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Knowledge of health behaviors and related factors of Chinese CCSs would help healthcare professionals develop further interventions to improve their care of this population.

Waterlogging is the primary abiotic factor that destabilizes the yield and quality of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). However, the genetic basis of waterlogging tolerance remains poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) by involving 106,131 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with a waterlogging score (WLS) of 250 barley accessions in two years. Out of 72 SNPs that were found to be associated with WLS, 34 were detected in at least two environments. We further performed the transcriptome analysis in root samples from TX9425 (waterlogging tolerant) and Franklin (waterlogging sensitive), resulting in the identification of 5,693 and 8,462 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in these genotypes, respectively. The identified DEGs included various transcription factor (TF) genes, primarily including AP2/ERF, bZIP and MYB. By combining GWAS and RNA-seq, we identified 27 candidate genes associated with waterlogging, of which three TFs (HvDnaJ, HvMADS and HvERF1) were detected in multiple treatments. Moreover, by overexpressing barley HvERF1 in Arabidopsis, the transgenic lines were detected with enhanced waterlogging tolerance. Altogether, our results provide new insights into the genetic mechanisms of waterlogging, which have implications in the molecular breeding of waterlogging-tolerant barley varieties.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided intertruncal approach (IA) has been proposed to be an alternative and promising approach to the supraclavicular block (SCB), in which double injection (DI) of local anesthetics (LA) is sequentially administered between intertruncal planes. We would like to apply a refined injection technique, named triple injection (TI) technique, based on the 3 separate compartments visualized by ultrasound. The aim of this study is to compare the percentage of patients with complete sensory blockade at 20 min of DI vs TI technique, when they are applied in patients undergoing upper limb arteriovenous access surgery. METHODS: This study is a prospective parallel-group randomized controlled trial. A total of 86 end-stage renal disease patients will be randomly allocated to receive IA-SCB using either DI or TI technique with identical LA (0.5% ropivacaine 24 mL). The primary outcome is the percentage of patients with complete sensory blockade of all 4 terminal nerves (median, ulnar, radial, and musculocutaneous nerves) of the brachial plexus measured at 20 min after injection. The secondary outcomes will consist of the sensory or motor blockade of all individual nerves, onset times, performance time, diaphragmatic paralysis, surgical anesthesia, and adverse events. DISCUSSION: It is expected that ultrasound-guided IA-SCB with the TI technique results in better block dynamic in patients undergoing upper limb arteriovenous access surgery. Coronary atherosclerosis (CAS) is a major cause of cardiovascular disease. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been implicated as novel biomarkers in coronary artery disease (CAD). APOA1 antisense RNA (APOA1-AS) was proven to show high expression during atherosclerotic development, but no report has uncovered the detailed mechanism of APOA1-AS in CAS. Thus, this paper aims to explore the role of APOA1-AS in CAS. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) were treated with oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) to mimic atherosclerosis-like injury. Quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) and western blot analysis analyzed gene expression. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), wound healing assay, and flow cytometry were implemented to assess the function of APOA1-AS in modulating pathological phenotype of VSMCs. Results demonstrated that APOA1-AS was notably up-regulated in ox-LDL treated VSMCs (ox-LDL-VSMCs). The deficiency of APOA1-AS hindered proliferation and migration and stimulated apoptosis in ox-LDL-VSMCs. Mechanistically, APOA1-AS recruited TATA-box binding protein associated factor 15 (TAF15) protein to stabilized SMAD family member 3 (SMAD3) mRNA and activate the TGF-ß/SMAD3 signaling pathway. In conclusion, APOA1-AS contributed to proliferation and migration and repressed apoptosis of VSMCs through TAF15-mediated SMAD3 mRNA stabilization, indicating that APOA1-AS could be a promising target for CAS.

MLL3 is a histone H3K4 methyltransferase that is frequently mutated in cancer, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we found that MLL3 depletion by CRISPR/sgRNA significantly enhanced cell migration, but did not elevate the proliferation rate of cancer cells. Through RNA-Seq and ChIP-Seq approaches, we identified TNS3 as the potential target gene for MLL3. MLL3 depletion caused downregulation of H3K4me1 and H3K27ac on an enhancer ~ 7 kb ahead of TNS3. 3C assay indicated the identified enhancer interacts with TNS3 promoter and repression of enhancer activity by dCas9-KRAB system impaired TNS3 expression. Exogenous expression of TNS3 in MLL3 deficient cells completely blocked the enhanced cell migration phenotype. Taken together, our study revealed a novel mechanism for MLL3 in suppressing cancer, which may provide novel targets for diagnosis or drug development.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate practices of nasogastric tube (NGT) intubation and feeding for adults by clinical nurses in China. METHODS: A self-designed and validated questionnaire comprising 30 questions was distributed to 560 clinical nurses in three comprehensive hospitals of Xiamen, China. The questionnaire covered participants' demographic characteristics, NGT placement, administration of enteral nutrition (EN), and monitoring or management of feeding intolerance. RESULTS: A total 464 (82.9%) questionnaires were completed; 36.2% of nurses used nose-ear-xiphoid and 79.5% forehead-xiphoid measurement to define the internal length of the NGT. Many participants still used traditional methods to confirm NGT placement (auscultation of injected air 50.2%, bubble test 34.7% and observing feeding tube aspirate 34.3%). Bolus feeding was the most commonly used technique to administer EN. A total 97.0% of all nurses used syringes to measure gastric residual volume (GRV), and 62.7% measured GRV every 4-8 hours. The most frequently used GRV threshold values were 200 mL (44.6%) and 150 mL (25.2%). Most nurses stopped feeding immediately when encountering high GRV (84.3%) or diarrhea (45.0%). The nasogastric feeding practices of many clinical nurses were not consistent with international guidelines. CONCLUSIONS: Our study can provide an impetus for nursing administrators to revise their nasogastric feeding procedures, to promote compliance with evidence-based guidelines.
