RESUMO

Pairwise interactions between species can be modified by other community members, leading to emergent dynamics contingent on community composition. Despite the prevalence of such higher-order interactions, little is known about how they are linked to the timing and order of species' arrival. We generate population dynamics from a mechanistic plant-soil feedback model, then apply a general theoretical framework to show that the modification of a pairwise interaction by a third plant depends on its germination phenology. These time-dependent interaction modifications emerge from concurrent changes in plant and microbe populations and are strengthened by higher overlap between plants' associated microbiomes. The interaction between this overlap and the specificity of microbiomes further determines plant coexistence. Our framework is widely applicable to mechanisms in other systems from which similar time-dependent interaction modifications can emerge, highlighting the need to integrate temporal shifts of species interactions to predict the emergent dynamics of natural communities.

BACKGROUND: Chronic endometritis (CE) is associated with poor reproductive outcomes, yet the role of endometrial microbiota in patients with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) and CE remains unclear. This study aims to characterize endometrial microbiota in RIF patients with CE and assess its implications for reproductive outcomes. METHODS: In this prospective study, we enrolled RIF patients both with and without CE. Endometrial and cervical samples were collected for 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. Microbiota composition was compared between groups using diversity indices, phylum, and genus-level analysis. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and Spearman's correlation coefficients were used to assess relationships between CE, reproductive outcomes, and microbiota. Predictive functional profiling was performed to evaluate metabolic pathways associated with CE. RESULTS: Endometrial microbiota in CE patients exhibited greater diversity and evenness compared to non-CE patients. Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) revealed distinct clustering between CE and non-CE groups. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) identified Proteobacteria, Aminicenantales, and Chloroflexaceae as characteristic of CE, while Lactobacillus, Acinetobacter, Herbaspirillum, Ralstonia, Shewanela, and Micrococcaceae were associated with non-CE. CCA demonstrated associations between CE, adverse reproductive outcomes, and specific bacterial taxa. Microbial metabolic pathways significantly differed between CE and non-CE groups, with enrichment in pathways related to cofactors, vitamins, secondary metabolites, and the immune system in CE patients. CONCLUSION: RIF patients with CE exhibit distinct endometrial microbiota compositions associated with adverse reproductive outcomes. The increased microbial diversity and altered metabolic pathways in CE suggest a potential correlation with reproductive outcomes, although further studies are necessary to elucidate the causal relationship between microbiota alterations and fertility. Modulating the endometrial microbiome may represent a novel therapeutic strategy to improve IVF outcomes in patients with CE.

PURPOSE: This prospective study investigates the correlation between vaginal microecology and pregnancy outcomes and explores their impact on endometrial microbiota composition during frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles. Additionally, the impact of transvaginal Lactobacillus supplementation on reproductive outcomes in patients with previous failed cycles was assessed. METHODS: A total of 379 patients undergoing FET at a reproductive medicine center were categorized into clinical pregnancy (CP), miscarriage (MISC), and non-pregnant (NP) groups. Vaginal specimens were collected for microecological evaluation prior to embryo transfer. Endometrial microbiota samples were obtained during embryo transfer for 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis to assess endometrial microbiota composition. Vaginal microecological indicators, including pH, Lactobacillus dominance, and leukocyte esterase activity, were measured. Transvaginal Lactobacillus supplementation was investigated in 60 patients with previous failed cycles. RESULTS: Vaginal microecology significantly correlated with pregnancy outcomes, with normal microecology associated with a higher clinical pregnancy rate. Vaginal pH and leukocyte esterase activity were significantly associated with clinical pregnancy. Furthermore, vaginal microecological differences significantly impacted endometrial microbiota composition. However, no significant differences were observed in endometrial microbiota composition among the CP, MISC, and NP groups. Notably, transvaginal Lactobacillus supplementation increased the clinical pregnancy rate without affecting the miscarriage rate. CONCLUSION: This study highlights that normal vaginal microecology, characterized by lower pH and leukocyte esterase negativity, is associated with a higher likelihood of clinical pregnancy following FET. Importantly, vaginal microecological differences influence endometrial microbiota composition. Moreover, transvaginal Lactobacillus supplementation appears promising in improving clinical pregnancy rates in patients with previous failed cycles. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the interplay between vaginal and endometrial microbiota and offer potential interventions to enhance reproductive success in assisted reproductive technologies.

AbstractThe arrival order of species frequently determines the outcome of their interactions. This phenomenon, called the priority effect, is ubiquitous in nature and determines local community structure, but we know surprisingly little about how it influences biodiversity across different spatial scales. Here, we use a seasonal metacommunity model to show that biodiversity patterns and the homogenizing effect of high dispersal depend on the specific mechanisms underlying priority effects. When priority effects are driven only by positive frequency dependence, dispersal-diversity relationships are sensitive to initial conditions but generally show a hump-shaped relationship: biodiversity declines when dispersal rates become high and allow the dominant competitor to exclude other species across patches. When spatiotemporal variation in phenological differences alters species' interaction strengths (trait-dependent priority effects), local, regional, and temporal diversity are surprisingly insensitive to variation in dispersal, regardless of the initial numeric advantage. Thus, trait-dependent priority effects can strongly reduce the effect of dispersal on biodiversity, preventing the homogenization of metacommunities. Our results suggest an alternative mechanism that maintains local and regional diversity without environmental heterogeneity, highlighting that accounting for the mechanisms underlying priority effects is fundamental to understanding patterns of biodiversity.

The relative arrival time of species can affect their interactions and thus determine which species persist in a community. Although this phenomenon, called priority effect, is widespread in natural communities, it is unclear how it depends on the length of growing season. Using a seasonal stage-structured model, we show that differences in stages of interacting species could generate priority effects by altering the strength of stabilizing and equalizing coexistence mechanisms, changing outcomes between exclusion, coexistence and positive frequency dependence. However, these priority effects are strongest in systems with just one or a few generations per season and diminish in systems where many overlapping generations per season dilute the importance of stage-specific interactions. Our model reveals a novel link between the number of generations in a season and the consequences of priority effects, suggesting that consequences of phenological shifts driven by climate change should depend on specific life histories of organisms.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence supports that the co-treatment with growth hormone (GH) enhances ovarian response and oocyte quality during controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) in patients with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR). The composition of follicular fluid (FF) plays an essential role in oocyte development and mirrors the communication occurring between the oocyte and follicular microenvironment. However, the effect of GH on the FF metabolome remains unclear. METHODS: This prospective observational study recruited DOR patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles with minimal stimulation protocol for COS. Each patient receiving GH co-treatment was matched to a patient without GH co-treatment by propensity score matching. The FF was collected after isolating oocytes and assayed by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) metabolomics. The Pearson correlation was performed to evaluate the relationship between the number of oocytes retrieved and the levels of differential metabolites. The KEGG database was used to map differential metabolites onto various metabolic pathways. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-four FF metabolites were identified by GC-MS metabolomics. Twenty-four metabolites, including glutathione, itaconic acid and S-adenosylmethionin (SAM) showed significant differences between the GH and control groups (p-value < 0.05 and q-value < 0.1). In addition, the number of oocytes retrieved was significantly higher in the GH group compared to the control group (3 vs 2, p = 0.04) and correlated with the levels of five differential metabolites. Among them, the levels of antioxidant metabolite itaconic acid were upregulated by GH administration, while SAM levels were downregulated. CONCLUSIONS: The co-treatment with GH during COS may improve oocyte development by altering FF metabolite profiles in DOR patients. However, given the downregulation of SAM, a regulator of genomic imprinting, the potential risk of imprinting disturbances should not be neglected.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A reduction in hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) is the most accurate marker for assessing the severity of portal hypertension and the effectiveness of intervention treatments. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic potential of blood-based proteomic biomarkers in predicting HVPG response amongst cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension due to Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and had achieved sustained virologic response (SVR). METHODS: The study comprised 59 patients from two cohorts. Patients underwent paired HVPG (pretreatment and after SVR), liver stiffness (LSM), and enhanced liver fibrosis scores (ELF) measurements, as well as proteomics-based profiling on serum samples using SomaScan® at baseline (BL) and after SVR (EOS). Machine learning with feature selection (Caret, Random Forest and RPART) methods were performed to determine the proteins capable of classifying HVPG responders. Model performance was evaluated using AUROC (pROC R package). RESULTS: Patients were stratified by a change in HVPG (EOS vs. BL) into responders (greater than 20% decline in HVPG from BL, or <10 mmHg at EOS with >10 mmHg at BL) and non-responders. LSM and ELF decreased markedly after SVR but did not correlate with HVPG response. SomaScan (SomaLogic, Inc., Boulder, CO) analysis revealed a substantial shift in the peripheral proteome composition, reflected by 82 significantly differentially abundant proteins. Twelve proteins accurately distinguished responders from non-responders, with an AUROC of .86, sensitivity of 83%, specificity of 83%, accuracy of 83%, PPV of 83%, and NPV of 83%. CONCLUSIONS: A combined non-invasive soluble protein signature was identified, capable of accurately predicting HVPG response in HCV liver cirrhosis patients after achieving SVR.

BACKGROUND: Choroideremia is a rare inherited retinal disease that leads to blindness. Visual acuity (VA) is a key outcome measure in choroideremia treatment studies, but VA decline rates change with age. An accurate understanding of the natural deterioration of VA in choroideremia is important to assess the treatment effect of new therapies in which VA is the primary outcome measure. We conducted a meta-analysis of data on individuals with choroideremia to determine the rate of VA deterioration between the better- and worse-seeing eye (BSE and WSE, respectively). METHODS: Data were collected from the prospective Natural History of the Progression of Choroideremia (NIGHT) study (613 eyes, baseline data only), studies included in a recent meta-analysis, and studies identified in a targeted literature search performed on March 25, 2020, including individual best-corrected VA (BCVA) and age data in male individuals with choroideremia. Best-corrected VA decline rates (measured by logMAR units) by age and trends in BCVA decline rates in the BSE and WSE were evaluated.  RESULTS: Data from 1037 males (1602 eyes; mean age, 41.8 years) were included. Before and after an age cutoff of 33.8 years, BCVA decline rates for the WSE were 0.0086 and 0.0219 logMAR per year, respectively. Before and after an age cutoff of 39.1 years, BCVA decline rates for the BSE were 0.00001 and 0.0203 logMAR per year, respectively. Differences in absolute BCVA and decline rates increased between the 2 eyes until age ~ 40; thereafter, differences in absolute BCVA and decline rates were similar between eyes. CONCLUSIONS: Using the largest choroideremia data set to date, this analysis demonstrates accelerated BCVA decline beginning between 30 and 40 years of age. Disparate interocular progression rates were observed before the transition age, with similar interocular progression rates after the transition age.

Subalpine vegetation across the Tibetan Plateau is globally one of the most sensitive to climate change. However, the potential landscape-scale effects of climate change on subalpine forest dynamics remain largely unexplored. Here, we used a forest landscape model (LANDIS-II) coupled with a forest ecosystem process model (PnET-II) to simulate forest dynamics under future climate change in Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve in the eastern subalpine region of the Tibetan Plateau. We examined changes in the composition, distribution and aboveground biomass of cold temperate coniferous forests, temperate coniferous forests, deciduous broad-leaved forests and redwood forest under four climate change scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP8.5 and the current climate) from 2016 to 2096. Our model predicts that by 2096, (i) cold temperate coniferous forests will expand and increase by 7.92%, 8.18%, 8.65% and 7.02% under current climate, RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively; (ii) distribution of forests as a whole shows upward elevational range shift, especially under RCP8.5 scenario and (iii) total aboveground biomass slowly increases at first and then decreases to 12%-16% of current distribution under RCPs. These results show that climate change can be expected to significantly influence forest composition, distribution and aboveground biomass in the subalpine forests of eastern Tibetan Plateau. This study is the first to simulate forest dynamics at the landscape scale in subalpine areas of the Tibetan Plateau, which provides an important step in developing more effective strategies of forest management for expected climate change, not only in China but also around the world.

BACKGROUND: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are increasingly implicated in regulating human carcinogenesis. Previous work showed the oncogenic activity of circ_0018289 in cervical cancer. However, the molecular basis underlying the modulation of circ_0018289 in cervical carcinogenesis is still not fully understood. METHODS: The levels of circ_0018289, microRNA (miR)-183-5p, and transmembrane p24 trafficking protein 5 (TMED5) were measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) or western blot assay. Ribonuclease (RNase) R and subcellular localization assays were used to characterize circ_0018289. Cell proliferation was detected by the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (Edu) assays. Cell apoptosis and tube formation were assessed by flow cytometry and tube formation assays, respectively. A dual-luciferase reporter assay was performed to confirm the direct relationship between miR-183-5p and circ_0018289 or TMED5. The role of circ_0018289 in tumor growth was gauged by mouse xenograft experiments. RESULTS: Circ_0018289 was overexpressed in cervical cancer tissues and cells. Circ_0018289 silencing impeded cell proliferation, enhanced cell apoptosis, and suppressed angiogenesis in vitro, as well as diminished tumor growth in vivo. Mechanistically, circ_0018289 targeted and regulated miR-183-5p by binding to miR-183-5p, and circ_0018289 regulated cervical cancer development and angiogenesis partially through miR-183-5p. Moreover, TMED5 was directly targeted and inhibited by miR-183-5p through the perfect complementary sites in TMED5 3'UTR, and TMED5 knockdown phenocopied miR-183-5p overexpression in suppressing cervical cancer development and angiogenesis. Furthermore, circ_0018289 induced TMED5 expression by competitively binding to shared miR-183-5p. CONCLUSION: Our observations identified the circ_0018289/miR-183-5p/TMED5 regulatory network as a novel molecular basis underlying the modulation of cervical carcinogenesis.

RESUMO

Plant-derived bioactive compounds, often called phytochemicals, are active substances extracted from different plants. These bioactive compounds can release therapeutic potential abilities via reducing antitumor drugs side effects or directly killing cancer cells, and others also can adjust cancer initiation and progression via regulating microRNAs (miRNAs) expression, and miRNA can regulate protein-coding expression by restraining translation or degrading target mRNA. A mass of research showed that plant-derived bioactive compounds including tanshinones, astragaloside IV, berberine, ginsenosides and matrine can inhibit tumor growth and metastasis by rescuing aberrant miRNAs expression, which has influence on tumor progression, microenvironment and drug resistance in multifarious cancers. This review aims to provide a novel understanding of plant-derived bioactive compounds targeting miRNAs and shed light on their future clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of pancreatic cancer (PCa) continues to grow. Detailed data on PCa epidemiology are essential for policy-making and appropriate healthcare resource allocation. METHODS: Estimates of incidence, death and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of PCa from 1990 to 2017 were collected from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017. Decomposition analysis was conducted to detect the contributing factors related to PCa incidence variation. The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to quantify the PCa epidemiology trends over a specified interval. RESULTS: Globally, the incidence of PCa cases increased by 129.1% to 447 664 664 (95% uncertainty interval (UI) 438 597-456 295), death increased by 125.2% to 441 082 082 (95% UI 448 960-432 833), and DALYs increased by 107.3% to 9 080 004 (95% UI 8 894 128-9 256 346) between 1990 and 2017. Relatively higher sociodemographic index (SDI) regions were observed with greater incidences, more deaths and a greater number of DALYs of PCa, but relatively lower SDI regions experienced a sharply increasing trend in these measures. Decomposition analysis indicated that the global increase in PCa incidence was driven by the aging population from 2007 to 2017, especially in higher SDI regions. In addition, a significant negative correlation was found between EAPC and ASIR (in 1990) (r = -0.56, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: PCa remains a major public health burden globally. The unfavorable trend in PCa suggesting that further study for prevention should be conducted to forestall the increase in pancreatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: Adult pancreatic hemangioma is an extremely rare type of benign vascular tumor. To date, about 20 cases have been reported in the English literature. Adult patients with pancreatic hemangiomas usually have no specific symptoms, particularly in early stages. Therefore, it is difficult to detect and diagnose these lesions, which usually are identified during cross sectional imaging for an apparently unrelated causes or when biliary obstruction occurs because of compression by a tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents the case of a 52-year-old female with a chief complaint of epigastric pain. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a well-defined mass with mildly inhomogeneous enhancement in the body of the pancreas. Endoscopic ultrasonography showed calcifications in the lesion, and a few small vessels were detected by Doppler imaging. The patient received a central pancreatectomy, and pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of pancreatic hemangioma. CONCLUSION: In this report, we reviewed the clinical manifestations, radiologic features, preoperative diagnosis, pathologic characteristics, and surgical treatment of adult pancreatic hemangioma.

Background/aim: Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a rare but fatal disease if left untreated. Symptoms are often similar to common conditions; therefore, the diagnostic strategy is important. We aimed to identify the atypical symptoms in a timely manner without putting patients at greater risk for undetected AAD. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study of 59 AAD patients with both atypical and typical symptoms from January 2012 to December 2016. Patients with atypical symptoms continuing more than 30 min underwent a D-dimer test and computed tomography (CT) or computed tomographic angiography (CTA). Results: Of the 59 AAD patients, 22 were atypical. In the atypical group, the median delay time in our hospital was 3.1 h; average delay time after July 2015 was shorter than average delay time before June 2015 (16.59 ± 24.70 vs. 1.90 ± 0.57 h, P = 0.076). Conclusions: For patients in the emergency department who are suspected of having AAD, incorporating atypical symptoms with high levels of D-dimer into a triage strategy could improve the efficiency of clinical decision making. Furthermore, essential education directed towards the recognition of the atypical symptoms of AAD for front-line physicians may aid in a timely diagnosis, as compared with the usual assessments in the emergency department.

RESUMO

The malignant degree of cholangiocarcinoma is high, and the early diagnosis is difficult. The vast majority of patients are unresectable when they are diagnosed. The patients have low quality of life and short survival cycle. Traditional radiotherapy and chemotherapy have poor efficacy and lead to side effects, and thus lack effective control measures for cholangiocarcinoma. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an important method for diagnosing and treating biliary tract diseases. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new local treatment for cholangiocarcinoma. In recent years, ERCP-mediated PDT treatment of cholangiocarcinoma has gradually emerged. ERCP-mediated PDT can effectively relieve the symptoms of patients with cholangiocarcinoma, improve the patients' quality of life, prolong the survival cycle, and is expected to become a new treatment for cholangiocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Accurate assessment of liver functional reserve pre-operatively is vital for safe hepatic resection. The ALBI score is a new model for assessing liver function. This study aimed to evaluate the value of combining ALBI score with sFLR in predicting post-operative morbidity and PHLF in HCC patients who underwent hepatectomy. METHODS: Patients undergoing three-dimensional CT reconstruction prior to hepatectomy for HCC between January 2015 and January 2017 were enrolled. The values of the CP score, ALBI score and sFLR in predicting post-operative outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 229 HCC patients were enrolled; 24 (10.5%) experienced major complications and 21 (9.2%) developed PHLF. The incidence of major complications and PHLF increased with increasing ALBI grade. The ALBI grade classified patients with CP grade A into two subgroups with different incidences of PHLF (P=.029). sFLR and ALBI scores were identified as independent predictors of PHLF. The AUC values for the CP score, ALBI score, sFLR and sFLR×ALBI for predicting major complications were 0.600, 0.756, 0.660 and 0.790 respectively. The AUC values of the CP score, ALBI score, sFLR and sFLR×ALBI for predicting PHLF were 0.646, 0.738, 0.758 and 0.884 respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The ALBI score showed superior predictive value of post-operative outcomes over CP score, and the combination of sFLR and ALBI score was identified as a stronger predictor of post-operative outcomes than the sFLR or ALBI score alone.

The main-chain liquid crystal (LC) copolyethers in which the nematic-nematic phase transition was first experimentally observed were revisited and re-characterised. Grazing incidence X-ray scattering revealed that the low-T nematic (Ntb) phase could be highly aligned by shearing, more so than in previously studied bent LC dimers. This was evidenced by a four-point wide-angle X-ray scattering pattern, which originates from convolution of two tilt distributions. Through intensity simulation the orientational order parameter associated with each of the distributions, as well as the conical angle of the Ntb phase, was calculated. Information regarding the polymer chain conformation was obtained using polarised infrared spectroscopy. The findings suggest the average conformation of the chains is a helix, and that the bend angle between mesogenic units is inversely related to temperature. All experimental evidence, including a jump in birefringence at the Ntb-nematic (N) phase transition, shows that copolyether samples mirror the behaviour of bent LC dimers over the transition. This confirms that the low-T nematic phase in copolyethers is indeed the same as that in LC dimers, now known to be the Ntb. The unusual broadening of transition peaks in complex heat capacity, obtained by modulated DSC experiments, is discussed.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The impact of portal hypertension (PH) on postoperative short-term outcomes and long-term survival in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients has lately been discussed controversially. This study aimed to explore the influence of PH on postoperative outcomes in HCC patients undergoing surgical resection. METHODS: Patients undergoing hepatectomy for HCC from 2010 to 2014 were enrolled. The impact of PH on postoperative complications, posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) and overall survival (OS) was evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 355 HCC patients were enrolled; 129 (36.3%) experienced postoperative complications and 21 (5.9%) developed PHLF. PH was identified as an independent predictor of PHLF. Patients with PH experienced a higher incidence of complications and PHLF than patients without PH. On the Cox proportional hazards regression model, PH was verified as a risk factor of OS for BCLC stage 0/A and B patients. Patients without PH had significantly better long-term survival compared to patients with PH both in the total cohort and in cirrhosis subgroup. CONCLUSION: Liver resection in HCC patients with PH showed a significantly increased postoperative complications and PHLF, and revealed a decreasing long-term survival than non-PH patients. Besides, tumor burden also played an important role in determining the OS. However, due to the improvement in surgical technique and perioperative management, surgery was feasible in carefully selected HCC patients with PH.

BACKGROUND: The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) grade is a newly proposed model for assessing the hepatic function. This study aimed to compare the value of the ALBI score with Child-Pugh score, model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score and indocyanine green (ICG) R15 in predicting posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF). METHODS: Patients undergoing curative resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) between January 2014 and June 2017 were enrolled. The values of the Child-Pugh score, MELD score, ICG R15 and ALBI score in predicting PHLF were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 473 HCC patients were enrolled. The ALBI score was identified as an independent predictor of PHLF. The AUCs for the Child-Pugh score, MELD score, ICG R15 and ALBI score in predicting PHLF were 0.665, 0.649, 0.668, and 0.745 respectively. Multivariable analyses revealed that the ALBI score was an independent predictor of PHLF regardless of the hepatectomy subgroups, but the Child-Pugh score and MELD score were not significant predictors of PHLF both in major and minor hepatectomy subgroups, and ICG R15 was only a significant predictor of PHLF in minor hepatectomy subgroup. CONCLUSION: The ALBI score showed superior predictive value of PHLF over Child-Pugh score, MELD score and ICG R15. We propose to use the ALBI score to evaluate surgical risk for HCC patients undergoing hepatic resection.

A modulated and conventional DSC study of the transitions between the twist-bend nematic (Ntb), regular nematic (N) and isotropic liquid (Iso) phases was performed on a series of difluoroterphenyl-based dimers with (CH2)n spacers; n = 5, 7, 9, 11. The enthalpy of Ntb-N transition decreases steeply with increasing n, while that of the N-Iso transition increases with n; hence, the greatest effect of increasing n is a lowering N phase enthalpy. Based on past and present X-ray scattering experiments, we estimate the average molecular conformation in the Ntb phase and perform torsion energy calculations on the spacer. From this, the lowering enthalpy of the N phase is attributed to the decreasing torsional energy cost of bringing the two terphenyls from an inclined twisted conformation in the Ntb phase, to almost parallel in the N phase. With increasing n the C-C bonds of the spacers twist less away from their trans conformation, thereby reducing the overall torsion energy of the N phase. It is speculated that the nearly continuous nature of the Ntb-N transition in n = 11 dimer is associated with the divergence of the helical pitch toward infinity which is intercepted by a final jump at the very weak (0.01 J g-1) first-order transition. Small-angle X-ray scattering results suggest similar local cybotactic layering in both nematic phases, with four sublayers, i.e. tails, mesogens, spacers, mesogens.
