Anaerobic digestion is an increasingly widespread process for organic waste treatment and renewable energy production due to the methane content of the biogas. This biological process also produces a digestate (i.e., the remaining content of the waste after treatment) with a high fertilizing potential. The digestate composition is highly variable due to the various organic wastes used as feedstock, the different plant configurations, and the post-treatment processes used. In order to optimize digestate spreading on agricultural soils by optimizing the fertilizer dose and, thus, reducing environmental impacts associated to digestate application, the agronomic characterization of digestate is essential. This study investigates the use of near infrared spectroscopy for predicting the most important agronomic parameters from freeze-dried digestates. A data set of 193 digestates was created to calibrate partial least squares regression models predicting organic matter, total organic carbon, organic nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents. The calibration range of the models were between 249.8 and 878.6 gOM.kgDM-1, 171.9 and 499.5 gC.kgDM-1, 5.3 and 74.1 gN.kgDM-1, 2.7 and 44.9 gP.kgDM-1 and between 0.5 and 171.8 gK.kgDM-1, respectively. The calibrated models reliably predicted organic matter, total organic carbon, and phosphorus contents for the whole diversity of digestates with root mean square errors of prediction of 70.51 gOM.kgDM-1, 34.84 gC.kgDM-1 and 4.08 gP.kgDM-1, respectively. On the other hand, the model prediction of the organic nitrogen content had a root mean square error of 7.55 gN.kgDM-1 and was considered as acceptable. Lastly, the results did not demonstrate the feasibility of predicting the potassium content in digestates with near infrared spectroscopy. These results show that near infrared spectroscopy is a very promising analytical method for the characterization of the fertilizing value of digestates, which could provide large benefits in terms of analysis time and cost.

Olive mill wastewater (OMWW) is a by-product of the olive oil extraction industry. Its dumping creates severe environmental problems in the Mediterranean countries. The phytoxicity of OMWW is due to the phenolic substances and is evaluated through a genotoxicity method. An aerobic treatment of OMWW was conducted during 45 days. Different concentrations of raw and treated OMWW were tested using the Vicia faba micronuclei test. Results showed that raw OMWW induced significant micronuclei formation at 10% of OMWW dilution. At 20% of dilution, no mitosis was recorded. The 45 days aerobic treatment OMWW showed an important decrease in the genotoxicity and also in the toxicity that was observed at 10% and 20% OMWW dilution. This could be correlated with the biodegradation of 76% of the total phenols. Indeed, qualitative analysis by high performance liquid chromatography shows the disappearance of the majority of phenolic compounds after 45 days of treatment. This study was completed by an agricultural test with V. faba plant. Data showed significant growth yield of 36.3% and 29.9% after being irrigated with 5 and 10 t/ha, respectively. These results supported the positive role of aerobic treatment on OMWW and their capacity to ameliorate the agronomic potential of these effluents.

Soil application of biosolids as an organic fertiliser continues to be a cost-effective way to beneficially utilise its carbon and nutrient contents to maintain soil fertility. However, ongoing concerns over microplastics and persistent organic contaminants means that land-application of biosolids has come under increased scrutiny. To identify a way forward for the ongoing future use of biosolids-derived fertilisers in agriculture, the current work presents a critical review of: (1) contaminants of concern in biosolids and how regulatory approaches can address these to enable on-going beneficial reuse, (2) nutrient contents and bioavailability in biosolids to understand agronomic potential, (3) developments in extractive technologies to preserve and recover nutrients from biosolids before destructive dissipation when the biosolids are thermally processed to deal with persistent contaminants of concern (e.g. microplastics), and (4) use of the recovered nutrients, and the biochar produced by thermal processing, in novel organomineral fertilisers that match specific equipment, crop and soil requirements of broad-acre cropping. Several challenges were identified and recommendations for prioritisation of future research and development are provided to enable safe beneficial reuse of biosolids-derived fertilisers. Opportunities include more efficient technologies to preserve, extract and reuse nutrients from sewage sludge and biosolids, and the production of organomineral fertiliser products with characteristics that enable reliable widespread use across broad-acre agriculture.

Legume species are important food sources to reduce hunger and deal with malnutrition; they also play a crucial role in sustainable agriculture in the tropical dry islands of Cabo Verde. To improve the knowledge of the heritage of plant genetic resources in this Middle Income Country, this study had three main goals: (i) to provide a checklist of food legumes; (ii) to investigate which species are traded in local markets and, based on field surveys, to compare species for their chemical, phenolic, antioxidant, and nutritional composition; and (iii) to discuss the agronomic value and contribution to food security in this archipelago. Our results revealed that 15 species are used as food and 5 of them are locally traded (Cajanus cajan, Lablab purpureus, Phaseolus lunatus, Phaseolus vulgaris, and Vigna unguiculata). The role of these species as sources of important minerals, antioxidants, and nutritional components for food security is highlighted, and the native ones (Lablab purpureus and Vigna unguiculata) stand-out as particularly well-adapted to the climate of these islands, which are already experiencing the adverse effects of climate change. We conclude that the sustainable use of these genetic resources can contribute to the reduction of hunger and poverty, thus meeting some challenges of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Composting is an efficient method for treating agricultural wastes. This study investigated the effects of the addition of biochar (B) and gypsum (G) to straw mixed with chicken manure (SC) (i.e. SC, SC + B, SC + G and SC + B + G) on composting performance at different initial C/N ratios (20, 25 and 30). In general, biochar combined with gypsum (BCG) efficiently shortened composting time and reduced N loss, C loss and potential ecological risk. It also enhanced lignocellulose decomposition, nutrient retention and the overall compost quality expressed by a compost quality index (CQI), and increased the biomass of four different test crops. The BCG-induced increase in CQI was closely associated with microbial enzyme activities and C catabolic profiles. These results indicated that the combination of biochar and gypsum is more effective than each single additive during composting, and emphasized that microbial activities and functions play pivotal roles in determining compost quality and thereby agronomic performance.
