BACKGROUND: The genetic basis underlying spawning abilities in the Pacific white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei, remains largely unexplored. To investigate genetic variations potentially related to reproductive performance, a systematic bioinformatic analysis was conducted to identify structural variations (SVs) with different polymorphic spectra in P. vannamei with high fertility (HF) and low fertility (LF). RESULTS: A total of 2,323 and 1,859 SV events were identified exclusively in the HF and LF groups, respectively. These SVs were mapped to 277 genes in the HF group and 231 genes in the LF group. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis based on SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism) and SVs revealed several neural-related processes, suggesting the importance of neural regulation in reproduction. Notably, we identified a set of promising genes, including Cttn, Spast, Ppp4c, Spire1, Lhcgr, and Ftz-f1, which may enhance fertility in shrimp. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, this study is the first to establish a link between SVs and reproductive traits in P. vannamei. The promising genes discovered have the potential to serve as crucial markers for enhancing reproductive traits through targeted genotyping.

RESUMO

This commentary responds to the article by Qureishi et al. (Am J Epidemol. XXXX;XXX(XX):XXXX-XXXX)) that criticizes a new proposal for "positive epidemiology." They argue that positive epidemiology as it is being proposed and conducted ignores supra-individual social contextual factors that constrain wellbeing of some individuals more than others, and it could exacerbate inequalities if applied at a population level, among other harms. They offer an alternative approach to defining causal factors that are helpful for wellbeing, and seek to ground their view in human rights and economic justice frameworks. This commentary considers their criticisms of PE and suggests that their alternative as well as all research into positive health and wellbeing would benefit from drawing on the ongoing debates and works in health equity and justice philosophy. A coherent conception of health and wellbeing, the link between health/wellbeing and theories of justice, and the capabilities approach are discussed. The efforts at conducting epidemiology for the causes and distribution of good health and wellbeing grounded in justice is welcomed.

The widespread acceptance of nonaqueous rechargeable metal-gas batteries, known for their remarkably high theoretical energy density, faces obstacles such as poor reversibility and low energy efficiency under high charge-discharge current densities. To tackle these challenges, a novel catalytic cathode architecture for Mg-CO2 batteries, fabricated using a one-pot electrospinning method followed by heat treatment, is presented. The resulting structure features well-dispersed molybdenum carbide nanodots embedded within interconnected carbon nanofibers, forming a 3D macroporous conducting network. This cathode design enhances the volumetric efficiency, enabling effective discharge product deposition, while also improving electrical properties and boosting catalytic activity. This enhancement results in high discharge capacities and excellent rate capabilities, while simultaneously minimizing voltage hysteresis and maximizing energy efficiency. The battery exhibits a stable cycle life of over 250 h at a current density of 200 mA g-1 with a low initial charge-discharge voltage gap of 0.72 V. Even at incredibly high current densities, reaching 1600 mA g-1 , the battery maintains exceptional performance. These findings highlight the crucial role of cathode architecture design in enhancing the performance of Mg-CO2 batteries and hold promise for improving other metal-gas batteries that involve deposition-decomposition reactions.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the impacts of dietary selenium yeast (SeY) on the growth performance, fish body composition, metabolic ability, antioxidant capability, immunity and inflammatory responses in juvenile black carp (Mylopharyngodn piceus). The base diet was supplemented with 0.00, 0.30 and 0.60 g/kg SeY (0.04, 0.59 and 1.15 mg/kg of selenium) to form three isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets for juvenile black carp with a 60-day. Adequate dietary SeY (0.30 and 0.60 g/kg) could significantly increase the weight gain (WG), special growth rate (SGR) compared to the SeY deficient groups (0.00 g/kg) (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, 0.30 and 0.60 g/kg SeY elevated the mRNA levels of selenoprotein T2 (SEPT2), selenoprotein H (SEPH), selenoprotein S (SEPS) and selenoprotein M (SEPM) in the liver and intestine compared with the SeY deficient groups (P < 0.05). Adequate dietary SeY could promote glucose catabolism and utilization through activating glucose transport (GLUT2), glycolysis (GCK, HK, PFK, PK, PDH), tricarboxylic acid cycle (ICDH and MDH), glycogen synthesis (LG, GCS and GBE) and IRS/PI3K/AKT signal pathway molecules (IRS2b, PI3Kc and AKT1) compared with the SeY deficient groups (P < 0.05). Similarly, adequate dietary SeY could improve lipid transport and triglycerides (TG) synthesis through increasing transcription amounts of CD36, GK, DGAT, ACC and FAS in the fish liver compared with the SeY deficient groups (P < 0.05). In addition, adequate SeY could markedly elevate activities of antioxidant enzymes (T-SOD, CAT, GR, GPX) and contents of T-AOC and GSH, while increased transcription amounts of Nrf2, Cu/Zn-SOD, CAT, and GPX in fish liver and intestine (P < 0.05). However, adequate SeY notably decreased contents of MDA, and the mRNA transcription levels of Keap1 in the intestine compared with the SeY deficient groups (P < 0.05). Adequate SeY markedly increased amounts or levels of the immune factors (ALP, ACP, LZM, C3, C4 and IgM) and the transcription levels of innate immune-related functional genes in the liver and intestine (LZM, C3 and C9) compared to the SeY deficient groups (P < 0.05). Moreover, adequate SeY could notably reduce levels of IL-8, IL-1ß, and IFN-γ and elevate TGF-1ß levels in fish intestine (P < 0.05). The transcription levels of MAPK13, MAPK14 and NF-κB p65 were notably reduced in fish intestine treated with 0.30 and 0.60 g/kg SeY (P < 0.05). In conclusion, these results suggested that 0.30 and 0.60 g/kg SeY could not only improve growth performance, increase Se, glucose and lipid metabolic abilities, enhance antioxidant capabilities and immune responses, but also alleviate inflammation, thereby supplying useful reference for producing artificial feeds in black carp.

The increasing urgency of global environmental degradation, particularly across diverse economic development stages, underscores a critical need for nuanced understanding and targeted strategies to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Our study examines environmental efficiency trends over 27 years in 163 countries, utilizing greenhouse gases and particulate matter 2.5 as indicators. We address the challenge by developing and applying a two-stage method that combines a hyperbolic distance function with a stochastic meta frontier approach to assess environmental meta-efficiency. The average meta efficiency of these countries is 0.464, which remains at a relatively low level. Our model indicates that the high-income country group needs to reduce greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions by 25% and increase non-fossil energy usage by 33% to improve environmental efficiency. This suggests these countries must transition towards more sustainable energy sources and practices. Moreover, recognizing that existing income grouping inadequately characterizes each country, we use k-means cluster analysis for regrouping, more accurately reflecting individual differences. The regrouping results show that some high-income countries are classified into inactive groups, implying serious environmental problems. Our findings advocate for collaborative and tailored strategies to address these disparities. We conclude that income levels cannot solely drive environmental efficiency but must also consider geographical and climatic factors, which are pivotal in shaping a country's environmental policies and efforts. This approach offers a clearer understanding of current inefficiencies and sets the stage for more informed policy-making that can better address the specific needs and capabilities of different countries.

OBJECTIVE: Economic evaluations of treatments help to inform decisions on allocating health care resources. These evaluations involve comparing costs and effectiveness in terms of quality of life. To calculate quality-adjusted life years, generic health related quality of life is often used, but is criticized for not being sensitive to change in mental health populations. Another approach, using experienced well-being measured through capabilities with the ICECAP-A, has been proposed as an alternative. The aim of this study was to investigate whether changes in individuals with eating disorder (ED) symptoms can be better captured using health related quality of life (EQ-5D-5L) or well-being (ICECAP-A). METHOD: Measurements at two time points with an interval of 1 year were used from a sample of 233 participants with self-reported ED symptoms. An analysis of variance was used to test whether the EQ-5D-5L and ICECAP-A differed in sensitivity to change over time. In order to compare the two questionnaires in terms of clinically significant outcome, the reliable change index and clinical cut-off score were calculated. RESULTS: The two questionnaires did not differ in sensitivity to change. More individuals had recovered but also more had deteriorated according to the EQ-5D-5L compared to the ICECAP. DISCUSSION: The present study revealed no differences in sensitivity to change in health-related quality of life or well-being in individuals with ED symptoms in the context of mild clinical change. Results corroborated the pervasiveness of low quality of life in this population, even after alleviation of ED symptoms. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Measuring treatment benefits in terms of improvements in quality of life is an integral part of economic evaluations in health care. It was expected that these treatment benefits would be better captured as changes in well-being (measured with the ICECAP-A) than as changes in health-related quality of life (measured with the EQ-5D-5L) for individuals with ED symptoms. Based on the results of this study, no preference for one of the two approaches was found.

PURPOSE: This study explores how important well-becoming factors appear to be to children during childhood. We define well-becoming as the indicators which predict children and young people's future wellbeing and opportunities. The priority for this work was to explore whether well-becoming might be an important factor to include in outcome measures for children and young people. The inclusion of well-becoming indicators could ensure that opportunities to invest in promoting wellbeing in children's futures are not missed. METHODS: In-depth, qualitative interviews (N = 70) were undertaken with children and young people aged 6-15 years and their parents. Analysis used constant comparison and framework methods to investigate whether well-becoming factors were considered important by informants to children and young people's current wellbeing. RESULTS: The findings of the interviews suggested that children and young people and their parents are concerned with future well-becoming now, as factors such as future achievement, financial security, health, independence, identity, and relationships were identified as key to future quality of life. Informants suggested that they considered it important during childhood to aspire towards positive outcomes in children and young people's futures. CONCLUSION: The study findings, taken alongside relevant literature, have generated evidence to support the notion that future well-becoming is important to current wellbeing. We have drawn on our own work in capability wellbeing measure development to demonstrate how we have incorporated a well-becoming attribute into our measures. The inclusion of well-becoming indicators in measures could aid investment in interventions which more directly improve well-becoming outcomes for children and young people.

OBJECTIVE: Caregivers require tangible (e.g. food and financial) and intangible resources to provide care to ensure child health, nutrition and development. Intangible resources include beliefs and knowledge, education, self-efficacy, perceived physical health, mental health, healthy stress levels, social support, empowerment, equitable gender attitudes, safety and security and time sufficiency. These intangible caregiver resources are included as intermediate outcomes in nutrition conceptual frameworks yet are rarely measured as part of maternal and child nutrition research or evaluations. To facilitate their measurement, this scoping review focused on understudied caregiver resources that have been measured during the complementary feeding period in low- and lower-middle-income countries. DESIGN: We screened 9,232 abstracts, reviewed 277 full-text articles and included 163 articles that measured caregiver resources related to complementary feeding or the nutritional status of children 6 months to 2 years of age. RESULTS: We identified measures of each caregiver resource, though the number of measures and quality of descriptions varied widely. Most articles (77 %) measured only one caregiver resource, mental health (n 83) and social support (n 54) most frequently. Psychometric properties were often reported for mental health measures, but less commonly for other constructs. Few studies reported adapting measures for specific contexts. Existing measures for mental health, equitable gender attitudes, safety and security and time sufficiency were commonly used; other constructs lacked standardised measures. CONCLUSIONS: Measurement of caregiver resources during the complementary feeding period is limited. Measuring caregiver resources is essential for prioritising caregivers and understanding how resources influence child care, feeding and nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) has serious physical consequences for children such as behavioral disabilities, growth disorders, neuromuscular problems, impaired motor coordination, and decreased muscle tone. However, it is not known whether loss of muscle strength occurs, and which interventions will effectively mitigate physical PAE impairments. We aimed to investigate whether physical alteration persists during adolescence and whether exercise is an effective intervention. RESULTS: Using paradigms to evaluate different physical qualities, we described that early adolescent PAE animals have significant alterations in agility and strength, without alterations in balance and coordination compared to CTRL animals. We evaluated the effectiveness of 3 different exercise protocols for 4 weeks: Enrichment environment (EE), Endurance exercise (EEX), and Resistance exercise (REX). The enriched environment significantly improved the strength in the PAE group but not in the CTRL group whose strength parameters were maintained even during exercise. Resistance exercise showed the greatest benefits in gaining strength, and endurance exercise did not. CONCLUSION: PAE induced a significant decrease in strength compared to CTRL in PND21. Resistance exercise is the most effective to reverse the effects of PAE on muscular strength. Our data suggests that individualized, scheduled, and supervised training of resistance is more beneficial than endurance or enriched environment exercise for adolescents FASD.

The East African Community (EAC) grapples with many challenges in tackling infectious disease threats and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), underscoring the importance of regional and robust pathogen genomics capacities. However, a significant disparity exists among EAC Partner States in harnessing bacterial pathogen sequencing and data analysis capabilities for effective AMR surveillance and outbreak response. This study assesses the current landscape and challenges associated with pathogen next-generation sequencing (NGS) within EAC, explicitly focusing on World Health Organization (WHO) AMR-priority pathogens. The assessment adopts a comprehensive approach, integrating a questionnaire-based survey amongst National Public Health Laboratories (NPHLs) with an analysis of publicly available metadata on bacterial pathogens isolated in the EAC countries. In addition to the heavy reliance on third-party organizations for bacterial NGS, the findings reveal a significant disparity among EAC member States in leveraging bacterial pathogen sequencing and data analysis. Approximately 97% (n = 4,462) of publicly available high-quality bacterial genome assemblies of samples collected in the EAC were processed and analyzed by external organizations, mainly in Europe and North America. Tanzania led in-country sequencing efforts, followed by Kenya and Uganda. The other EAC countries had no publicly available samples or had all their samples sequenced and analyzed outside the region. Insufficient local NGS sequencing facilities, limited bioinformatics expertise, lack of adequate computing resources, and inadequate data-sharing mechanisms are among the most pressing challenges that hinder the EAC's NPHLs from effectively leveraging pathogen genomics data. These insights emphasized the need to strengthen microbial pathogen sequencing and data analysis capabilities within the EAC to empower these laboratories to conduct pathogen sequencing and data analysis independently. Substantial investments in equipment, technology, and capacity-building initiatives are crucial for supporting regional preparedness against infectious disease outbreaks and mitigating the impact of AMR burden. In addition, collaborative efforts should be developed to narrow the gap, remedy regional imbalances, and harmonize NGS data standards. Supporting regional collaboration, strengthening in-country genomics capabilities, and investing in long-term training programs will ultimately improve pathogen data generation and foster a robust NGS-driven AMR surveillance and outbreak response in the EAC, thereby supporting global health initiatives.

INTRODUCTION: This paper presents a structured review of the use of crisis management, specifically examining the frameworks of surge capacity, resilience, and dynamic capabilities in healthcare organizations. Thereafter, a novel deductive method based on the framework of dynamic capabilities is developed and applied to investigate crisis management in two hospital cases during the COVID-19 pandemic. BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic distinguishes itself from many other disasters due to its global spread, uncertainty, and prolonged duration. While crisis management in healthcare has often been explained using the surge capacity framework, the need for adaptability in an unfamiliar setting and different information flow makes the dynamic capabilities framework more useful. METHODS: The dynamic capabilities framework's microfoundations as categories is utilized in this paper for a deductive analysis of crisis management during the COVID-19 pandemic in a multiple case study involving two Swedish public hospitals. A novel method, incorporating both dynamic and static capabilities across multiple organizational levels, is developed and explored. RESULTS: The case study results reveal the utilization of all dynamic capabilities with an increased emphasis at lower organizational levels and a higher prevalence of static capabilities at the regional level. In Case A, lower-level managers perceived the hospital manager as brave, supporting sensing, seizing, and transformation at the department level. However, due to information gaps, sensing did not reach regional crisis management, reducing their power. In Case B, with contingency plans not initiated, the hospital faced a lack of management and formed a department manager group for patient care. Seizing was robust at the department level, but regional levels struggled with decisions on crisis versus normal management. The novel method effectively visualizes differences between organizational levels and cases, shedding light on the extent of cooperation or lack thereof within the organization. CONCLUSION: The researchers conclude that crisis management in a pandemic, benefits from distributed management, attributed to higher dynamic capabilities at lower organizational levels. A pandemic contingency plan should differ from a plan for accidents, supporting the development of routines for the new situation and continuous improvement. The Dynamic Capabilities framework proved successful for exploration in this context.

The global sustainability movement is reshaping the operational requirements and managerial approaches of maritime firms, resulting in the emergence of unprecedented and complex risks in the sector. This has driven maritime firms to leverage digital tools, such as artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, to enhance their sustainability risk management (SRM) endeavors. Drawing on the organizational information-processing theory (OIPT), this study proposes four AI capabilities: customer value proposition, key process optimization, key resource optimization, and societal good. It examines their influence on sustainability-related knowledge management capabilities (SKMC), stakeholder engagement, and SRM. A survey questionnaire was used to gather responses from 157 maritime professionals across various sectors of the industry, providing empirical data for analysis. Employing structural equation modeling, the findings reveal that AI capabilities can improve SKMC. These findings enhance existing literature by using OIPT concepts to investigate the interplay among the constructs that lead to better SRM in maritime firms. Furthermore, the study offers managerial guidance by providing insights into AI capabilities that maritime firms should incorporate into their operations, fostering best practices to effectively manage sustainability risks and ensure the firm's long-term survival.

BACKGROUND: An increased interest has been observed in the wide use of intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) to control acute postoperative pain in both China and Thailand. The safety and efficacy of IV-PCA in patient care requires competent and capable staff nurses. This study aimed to appraise the capabilities of Thai and Chinese registered nurses regarding IV-PCA as a guide to develop educational programs. METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted with 203 Chinese and 270 Thai registered nurses. An anonymous self-report questionnaire addressing 6 domains of capabilities toward IV-PCA was used to collect the data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS: The study found that the mean percentage scores (MPS) of the overall capability on IV-PCA of the Thai and Chinese nurse participants were 55.5 (mean [M] = 57.3, standard deviation [SD] = 4.9) and 62.6 (M = 58.7, SD = 13.0), respectively, which indicated very low and low levels. Barriers to the use and care of patients receiving IV-PCA after surgery according to the Thai and Chinese nurse participants included a lack of knowledge and systematic training regarding IV-PCA and a lack of first-hand experience in providing care for IV-PCA patients. CONCLUSION: The study results call for intensive and effective training and education concerning all domains for registered nurses involved with patients receiving IV-PCA.

AIMS: To describe self-care capabilities among children with cerebral palsy (CP) and explore associations between self-care and hand function for children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) and children with bilateral cerebral palsy (BCP) separately. METHOD: Cross-sectional data on self-care capabilities (Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory, PEDI), manual abilities (Manual Ability Classification System, MACS) and hand use during bimanual performance (Assisting Hand Assessment, AHA; Both Hands Assessment, BoHA) were retrieved from the Norwegian Quality and Surveillance Registry for Cerebral Palsy (NorCP). Eighty-seven children with CP (UCP, n = 61, mean age 4 years 1 month, SD 1 year 3 months, range 56) or BCP (n = 26, mean age 4 years 4 months, SD 1 year, range 41), classified at MACS level I (n = 26), II (n = 40) or III (n = 21), were included. RESULTS: No significant differences in self-care capabilities were found between children with UCP and children with BCP. Analysis of variance showed significant differences in self-care between MACS levels for the whole group. No significant differences in self-care between MACS levels were observed for children with UCP (p = 0.36), but significant differences were found for those with BCP (p < 0.001). Whereas a small correlation (r = 0.3) between PEDI and AHA scores was found for children with UCP, a large correlation (r = 0.6) was found for those with BCP. Children with BCP with symmetric hand use during bimanual performance (BoHA) had higher PEDI scores than children with asymmetric hand use. CONCLUSION: Though children with UCP and children with BCP who were classified at MACS I-III exhibited similar self-care capabilities, the limited hand use seems to contribute differently between the two groups. The two different measures of hand use exhibit different associations with self-care capabilities for young children with UCP and BCP, respectively, and illustrate the need to treat UCP and BCP as two distinct groups, each requiring tailored interventions according to their specific needs.

BACKGROUND: To adequately prepare graduates for the dynamic demands of paramedic practice, adopting a contemporary educational approach is essential. This involves collaborating to identify crucial competencies through input from industry stakeholders, experienced practitioners, and discipline-specific experts. Accreditation assumes a central role within this framework, serving as a cornerstone to ensure that paramedicine curricula align with paramedics' diverse and evolving professional roles. METHODS: A narrative review of the literature and a directed search of grey literature were performed to identify specific developments in paramedicine competencies and scope of practice and mapped to the professional capabilities published by the Paramedicine Board of Australia. In determining a competency map and accreditation's role in a competency framework specific to current and evolving paramedic practice, key documents were analysed using a qualitative approach based on content analysis to identify common traits among documents, countries and other professions. RESULTS: The review process identified 278 themes that were further allocated to 22 major analytical groupings. These groupings could further be mapped to previously reported cognitive, technical, integrative, context, relationship, affective/moral competencies and habits of mind. At the same time, the highest-rated groupings were key competencies of intellectual skills, safety, accountability, clinical decision-making, professionalism, communications, team-based approach and situational awareness. Two groups were represented in the literature but not in the professional capabilities, namely Health and Social continuum and self-directed practice. CONCLUSIONS: This review highlights the importance of measuring and validating the professional capabilities of Paramedicine Practitioners. The study explores various metrics and competency frameworks used to assess competency, comparing them against national accreditation schemes' professional capability standards. The findings suggest that accreditation frameworks play a crucial role in improving the quality of paramedicine practice, encompassing intellectual skills, safety, accountability, clinical decision-making, professionalism, communication, teamwork, and situational awareness.

BACKGROUND: How healthcare professionals understand and use concepts of social and cognitive capabilities will influence their behaviour and their understanding of others' behaviour. Differing understandings of concepts might lead to healthcare professionals not acting in accordance with other healthcare professionals' expectations. Therefore, part of the problem concerning errors and adverse incidents concerning social and cognitive capabilities might be due to varying understandings of concepts among different healthcare professionals. This study aimed to examine the variations in how educators at the Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education and Simulation talk about social and cognitive capabilities. METHODS: The study was conducted using semi-structured interviews and directed content analysis. The codes for the analysis process were derived from existing non-technical skills models and used to show variations in how the participants talk about the same concepts. RESULTS: Educators with a background as nurses and physicians, talked differently about leadership and decision-making, with the nurses paying greater attention to group dynamics and external factors when describing both leadership and decision-making, whereas physicians focus on their individual efforts. CONCLUSION: We found patterned differences in how the participants described leadership and decision-making that may be related to participants' professional training/background. As it can create misunderstandings and unsafe situations if nurses and physicians disagree on the meaning of leadership and decision-making (without necessarily recognising this difference), it could be beneficial to educate healthcare professionals to be aware of the specificity of their own concepts, and to communicate what exactly they mean by using a particular concept, e.g. "I want you to coordinate tasks" instead of "I want better leadership".

RESUMO

Aqueous proton batteries (APBs) have emerged as one of the most promising batteries for large-scale energy storage technology. However, they usually show an undesirable electrochemical performance. Herein, we demonstrate a novel aqueous catalytic hydrogen gas powered organic proton (HOP) battery, which is driven by hydrogen evolution/oxidation redox reactions via commercial nanocatalysts on the anode and coordination/decoordination reactions of C═O with H+ on the cathode. The HOP battery shows an excellent rate capacity of 190.1 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 and 71.4 mAh g-1 at 100 A g-1. It also delivers a capacity of 96.6 mAh g-1 after 100000 cycles and operates at temperatures down to -70 °C. Moreover, the HOP battery is fabricated in a large-scale pouch cell with an extended capacity, exhibiting its potential for practical energy storage applications. This work provides new insights into the building of sustainable APBs, which will broaden the horizons of high-performance aqueous batteries.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is a serious safety hazard in the healthcare sector and has attracted much attention worldwide, especially for nursing staff. Equipping nursing personnel with protective capabilities for workplace violence can reduce the risk they face in work settings. This study explored scenarios of common violent patient-nurse conflicts in the workplace of hospital nursing staff and their capabilities for de-escalating such conflicts. METHODS: We used a qualitative content analysis for this study. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 21 nurses in two teaching hospitals in New Taipei City, Taiwan, until data saturation was reached. The data were transcribed, encoded, and analyzed and similar concepts were grouped under the same category. RESULTS: Four categories of workplace violence scenarios common to hospital nursing staff were identified: unreasonable requests, caring for high-risk patients, long waiting times for medical consultation, and close contact when caring for patients. Two protective capabilities were recognized: communication and interpersonal capabilities and problem-solving skills. Each scenario may require a different combination of abilities. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that a violence-prevention training program could be designed for various workplace violence scenarios to enhance nurses' abilities to de-escalate workplace violence in hospitals.

Adults who have substantial histories of homelessness and complex support needs may feel ambivalent about integrating into their communities and find it difficult to do so. Being familiar to and recognized by others as a resident in a neighborhood or community are sources of "distal support" that provide individuals with feelings of belonging to their community and are important to recovery from homelessness. We hypothesized that individuals engaged with Housing First (HF) programs would report more distal support than individuals engaged with traditional homeless services (treatment as usual, TAU), and that distal support would predict more community integration, growth-related recovery, and achieved capabilities. We analyzed data collected from homeless services users (n = 445) engaged with either HF or TAU in eight European countries. Measures included achieved capabilities, growth-focused recovery, distal supports, and community integration. Serial mediation analyses confirmed our hypothesis that the effects of HF on growth-related recovery and achieved capabilities are indirect, mediated by distal supports and community integration. Findings are discussed in relation to the importance of modeling the effects of HF on social and psychological outcomes as indirect and identifying important mediators that translate the effects of HF components on social and psychological outcomes. We also note the importance of case management activities that encourage clients to develop and sustain distal supports with others who live and work in their neighborhoods.

RESUMO

It is a common view that artificial systems could play an important role in dealing with the shortage of caregivers due to demographic change. One argument to show that this is also in the interest of care-dependent persons is that artificial systems might significantly enhance user autonomy since they might stay longer in their homes. This argument presupposes that the artificial systems in question do not require permanent supervision and control by human caregivers. For this reason, they need the capacity for some degree of moral decision-making and agency to cope with morally relevant situations (artificial morality). Machine ethics provides the theoretical and ethical framework for artificial morality. This article scrutinizes the question how artificial moral agents that enhance user autonomy could look like. It discusses, in particular, the suggestion that they should be designed as moral avatars of their users to enhance user autonomy in a substantial sense.
