RESUMO

The meteoritic material falling on Earth is believed to derive from large break-up or cratering events in the asteroid belt. The flux of extraterrestrial material would then vary in accordance with the timing of such asteroid family-forming events. In order to validate this, we investigated marine sediments representing 15 time-windows in the Phanerozoic for content of micrometeoritic relict chrome-spinel grains (>32 µm). We compare these data with the timing of the 15 largest break-up events involving chrome-spinel-bearing asteroids (S- and V-types). Unexpectedly, our Phanerozoic time windows show a stable flux dominated by ordinary chondrites similar to today's flux. Only in the mid-Ordovician, in connection with the break-up of the L-chondrite parent body, do we observe an anomalous micrometeorite regime with a two to three orders-of-magnitude increase in the flux of L-chondritic chrome-spinel grains to Earth. This corresponds to a one order-of-magnitude excess in the number of impact craters in the mid-Ordovician following the L-chondrite break-up, the only resolvable peak in Phanerozoic cratering rates indicative of an asteroid shower. We argue that meteorites and small (<1-km-sized) asteroids impacting Earth mainly sample a very small region of orbital space in the asteroid belt. This selectiveness has been remarkably stable over the past 500 Ma.

Air pollution in industrial environments, particularly in the chrome plating process, poses significant health risks to workers due to high concentrations of hazardous pollutants. Exposure to substances like hexavalent chromium, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and particulate matter can lead to severe health issues, including respiratory problems and lung cancer. Continuous monitoring and timely intervention are crucial to mitigate these risks. Traditional air quality monitoring methods often lack real-time data analysis and predictive capabilities, limiting their effectiveness in addressing pollution hazards proactively. This paper introduces a real-time air pollution monitoring and forecasting system specifically designed for the chrome plating industry. The system, supported by Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and AI approaches, detects a wide range of air pollutants, including NH3, CO, NO2, CH4, CO2, SO2, O3, PM2.5, and PM10, and provides real-time data on pollutant concentration levels. Data collected by the sensors are processed using LSTM, Random Forest, and Linear Regression models to predict pollution levels. The LSTM model achieved a coefficient of variation (R²) of 99 % and a mean absolute percentage error (MAE) of 0.33 for temperature and humidity forecasting. For PM2.5, the Random Forest model outperformed others, achieving an R² of 84 % and an MAE of 10.11. The system activates factory exhaust fans to circulate air when high pollution levels are predicted to occur in the next hours, allowing for proactive measures to improve air quality before issues arise. This innovative approach demonstrates significant advancements in industrial environmental monitoring, enabling dynamic responses to pollution and improving air quality in industrial settings.

BACKGROUND: Failure due to trunnionosis with adverse local tissue reaction (ALTR) has been reported with cobalt-chrome (CoCr) heads in total hip arthroplasty (THA); however, there are limited data on the use of these heads in the revision setting. The purpose of this study was to analyze the outcomes of patients who underwent revision THA with a retained femoral component and received a CoCr femoral head on a used trunnion. METHODS: In this retrospective review, we identified all patients who underwent revision THA with a retained femoral component and received a CoCr femoral head between February 2006 and March 2014. Demographic factors, implant details, and postoperative complications, including the need for repeat revisions, were recorded. In total, 107 patients were included (mean age 67 years, 74.0% women). Of the 107 patients, 24 (22.4%) required repeat revisions. RESULTS: Patients who required repeat revision were younger than those who did not (mean age: 62.9 versus 69, P = .03). The most common indications for repeat revision were instability (8 of 24, 33.3%), ALTR (5 of 24, 20.8%), and infection (4 of 18, 16.7%). Evidence of ALTR or metallosis was identified at the time of reoperation in 10 of the 24 patients who underwent re-revision (41.7%). CONCLUSIONS: The placement of a new CoCr femoral head on a used trunnion during revision THA with a retained femoral component carries a significant risk of complication (22.4%) and should be avoided when possible.

BACKGROUND: Polished baseplates were introduced into total knee arthroplasty (TKA) systems to reduce the incidence of backside wear. In 2004, a fixed-bearing knee arthroplasty system underwent a change in baseplate material from matt titanium to polished cobalt-chrome (CoCr) with the intention to reduce backside wear. Other design aspects were left unchanged. The aim of this study was to compare these implants with each baseplate using data from the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry. METHODS: Primary TKA procedures performed between January 2010 and December 2021 for osteoarthritis, using a single design with cross-linked polyethylene inserts and matt titanium or polished CoCr baseplates, were analyzed. The primary outcome was all-cause revision, summarized using Kaplan-Meier estimates, with age- and sex-adjusted hazard ratios estimated from Cox proportional hazards models. In total, there were 2,091 procedures with matt titanium and 2,519 procedures with polished CoCr baseplates. RESULTS: The 9-year cumulative percent revision was 2.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.8 to 3.5%) and 4.2% (95% CI 3.1 to 5.6%) for the matt titanium and CoCr groups, respectively. Compared to matt titanium, the revision rate of CoCr baseplates was not significantly higher (hazard ratio 1.44; 95% CI 0.96 to 2.15; P = .076). CONCLUSIONS: Polished CoCr baseplates in a single TKA system were not associated with reduced all-cause revision rates compared to matt titanium up to 11 years post-TKA. Our results suggest that the predicted reduction in wear particle debris production from polished CoCr baseplates may not correlate with reduced revision rates in vivo, but further evaluation is required.

The leather manufacturing industry is increasingly embracing chrome-free tanning methods to promote environmental sustainability. However, the transition to chrome-free tanning systems presents a notable obstacle: the incompatibility of traditional anionic wet finishing materials with chrome-free tanned leather due to differences in surface electrical behavior. Herein, an amphoteric polymer, referred to P(AA-co-DMAEMA-co-DA), was synthesized through a simple one-step free radical copolymerization using acrylic acid (AA), dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), and dodecyl acrylate (DA). Notably, the isoelectric point of P(AA-co-DMAEMA-co-DA) is 7.7, which contributes to improving the leather's positive electric property and enhancing the binding between the amphoteric polymer fatliquors (APF) and collagen fiber. The APF achieves a remarkable absorption rate of 96.2% and a dyeing uptake rate of 94.3% for anionic dyes, resulting in a uniformly bright surface color of the dyed leather and further significantly reducing the dye usage. Overall, the comprehensive properties of APF align with the electrical origins of organic chrome-free tanning leather, exhibiting a pronounced fatliquoring effect while reducing the dye content in the waste liquor. This contribution holds promise for advancing chrome-free tanning technology toward greener environmental practices.

The enhanced hydrothermal stability of leather, imparted by little Cr(III), has traditionally been ascribed to strong coordinate bonds. However, this explanation falls short when considering that the heat-induced shrinking of collagen fiber is predominantly driven by rupturing weak H-bonds. This study explored the stability source via adsorption thermodynamics using collagen fiber as an adsorbent. Eleven isotherm models were fitted with the equilibrium dataset. Nine of these models aptly described Cr(III) adsorption based on the physical interpretations of model parameters and error functions. The adsorption equilibrium constants from six models could be transformed into dimensionless thermodynamic equilibrium constants. Based on the higher R2 of the van't Hoff equation, thermodynamic parameters (∆G°, ∆H°, ∆S°) from the Fritz-Shluender isotherm model revealed that the adsorption process typifies endothermic and spontaneous chemisorption, emphasizing entropy increase as the primary driver of Cr(III) bonding with collagen. Thus, the release of bound H2O from collagen is identified as the stability source of collagen fiber modified by Cr(III). This research not only clarifies the selection and applicability of the isotherm model in a specific aqueous system but also identifies entropy, rather than enthalpy, as the principal stability source of Cr-leather. These insights facilitate the development of novel methods to obtain stable collagen-based material.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of using different types of metallic and non-metallic telescopic crown attachment materials on wear resistance and surface tomography changes in implant-retained mandibular overdentures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Completely edentulous mandibular epoxy models were fabricated, in which two implants were placed in the canine region and retained to the implants with three different material combinations used for the construction of telescopic attachments. Thirty-three identical mandibular overdentures were fabricated using the conventional standardized technique. The study groups were divided into three categories according to the material used for the construction of the secondary copings. The primary copings in all the study groups were constructed of PEEK, while the secondary coping in group I was PEEK, group II was ZrO2 and CoCr for group III. Primary copings were cemented on a ready-made abutment. Secondary copings were placed over the primary copings in the desired path of insertion, then picked up into the intaglio surface of the overdentures. A cyclic loading machine was used to apply repeated insertion-removal cycles simulating nearly 10 years of clinical use. Stereomicroscope with a built-in camera was used to monitor the reduction in width of the primary copings to evaluate the wear resistance of each material combination. RESULTS: There was highly statistically significant difference between the study groups after the application of 1.000, 5.000 and 10.000 cycles. The highest level of wear resistance was recorded for the PEEK/PEEK combination, whereas PEEK/ZrO2 and PEEK/CoCr showed no significant differences. CONCLUSIONS: Implant retained overdenture with PEEK-PEEK telescopic crown attachment is associated with the highest wear resistance among all the study groups. PEEK-PEEK combination may be the treatment of choice for fabrication of telescopic attachment in implant retained overdenture as it provides better resistance to wear. It offers the advantages for geriatric patients as it decreases the possibility for repeated repair and replacement of attachment, increase long-term patient satisfaction and shelf life of prosthesis.

PURPOSE: Bilayered restorations have both the strength of the substructure material and the esthetics of the veneer material; however, they should have appropriate bonding between the two materials. This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) according to the substructure material and veneering technique used in bilayered restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experimental group was divided into four groups (n = 15 per group) based on the substructure materials (cobalt-chromium [Co-Cr] alloy and 3 mol% yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal [3Y-TZP]) and veneering techniques (pressing and layering). Veneering was performed with disk shape (diameter: 5 mm, height: 2 mm) on a substructure using each veneering technique. Shear stress was applied to the interface of the substructure and the veneering ceramic using a universal testing machine. The shear bond strength, according to the substructure and veneering technique, was analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance with a post-hoc Tukey's honestly significant difference test. The failure mode was observed, and the surface was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. RESULTS: The shSBS of the Co-Cr alloy and 3Y-TZP substructure was not different (p > 0.05); however, the pressing technique showed a higher SBS than the layering technique (p < 0.05). The SBS did not differ depending on the veneering technique in the Co-Cr alloys (p > 0.05), whereas the SBS in the pressing technique was higher than that in the layering technique for 3Y-TZP (p < 0.05). In the layering technique, the Co-Cr alloy showed a higher SBS than 3Y-TZP (p < 0.05). In the failure mode, mixed failure occurred most frequently in all groups. Extensive elemental interdiffusion was observed through the opaque layer in the Co-Cr alloy, regardless of the veneering technique. In 3Y-TZP, a wider range of elemental interdiffusion was observed in the pressing technique than in the layering technique. CONCLUSIONS: In bilayered restorations with a 3Y-TZP substructure, the pressing technique yielded higher bonding strength than layering. Using the layering technique, 3Y-TZP showed a lower SBS than the Co-Cr alloy. In bilayered restorations using 3Y-TZP as a substructure, the veneering technique and thermal compatibility of the materials must be considered.

Dopamine (DA) is a precursor of neuromelanin (NM) synthesized in the substantia nigra of the brain. NM is known to contain considerable levels of Fe and Cu. However, how Fe and Cu ions affect DA oxidation to DA-eumelanin (DA-EM) and modify its structure is poorly understood. EMs were prepared from 500 µM DA, dopaminechrome (DAC), or 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI). Autoxidation was carried out in the absence or presence of 50 µM Fe(II) or Cu(II) at pH 7.4 and 37 â„ƒ. EMs were characterized by Soluene-350 solubilization analyzing absorbances at 500 nm (A500) and 650 nm (A650) and alkaline hydrogen peroxide oxidation (AHPO) yielding various pyrrole carboxylic acids. Pyrrole-2,3,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid (PTeCA) served as a molecular marker of cross-linked DHI units. Importantly, Fe and Cu accelerated DA oxidation to DA-EM and DHI oxidation to DHI-EM several-fold, whereas these metals only weakly affected the production of DAC-EM. The A500 values indicated that DA-EM contains considerable portions of uncyclized DA units. Analysis of the A650/A500 ratios suggests that Fe and Cu caused some degradation of DHI units of DA-EM during 72-h incubation. Results with AHPO were consistent with the A500 values and additionally revealed that (1) DA-EM is less cross-linked than DAC-EM and DHI-EM and (2) Fe and Cu promote cross-linking of DHI units. In conclusion, Fe and Cu not only accelerate the oxidation of DA to DA-EM but also promote cross-linking and degradation of DHI units. These results help to understand how Fe and Cu in the brain affect the production and properties of NM.

Two Gram-negative facultative anaerobes were isolated from a sepsis patient with pancreatic cancer (strain PAGU 2156T ) and soil at the bottom of a pond (strain PAGU 2198T ), respectively. These two strains formed haloes around the colonies on chrome azurol S agar plates, indicating the production of siderophores. Two isolates assigned to the genus Pantoea based on the 16S rRNA gene were differentiated from established species by using polymorphic taxonomies. Phylogenetic analysis using four housekeeping genes (gyrB, rpoB, atpD, and infB) showed that strain PAGU 2156T is closely related to Pantoea cypripedii LMG 2657T (89.9%) or Pantoea septica LMG 5345T (95.7%). Meanwhile, strain PAGU 2198T formed a single clade with Pantoea rodasii DSM 26611T (93.6%) and Pantoea rwandensis DSM 105076T (93.3%). The average nucleotide identity values obtained from the draft genome assembly showed ≤90.2% between strain PAGU 2156T and closely related species and ≤81.5% between strain PAGU 2198T and closely related species. Based on various phenotypes, biochemical properties, and whole-cell fatty acid composition compared with related species, it was concluded that each strain should be classified as a new species of the genus Pantoea. In this manuscript, Pantoea ferrattrahens sp. nov. and Pantoea ferramans sp. nov. with strain PAGU 2156T (=NBRC 115930T = CCUG 76757T ) and strain PAGU 2198T (=NBRC 114265T = CCUG 75151T ) are proposed as each type strain.

BACKGROUND: Wear between the femoral head and acetabular liners continues to limit the longevity of total hip arthroplasty implants despite advances in implant materials. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare linear wear rates of cobalt-chromium (CoCr) and fourth-generation ceramic femoral heads on highly cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) liners. METHODS: A systematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines was conducted to identify all studies between 2003 and 2020 that examined in vivo wear rates of either fourth-generation ceramics or CoCr femoral heads on XLPE liners. Studies were analyzed in a weighted means analysis of wear rates and a random effects meta-analysis. RESULTS: A total of 36 studies met inclusion criteria (1,657 CoCr and 659 ceramic patients). The pooled, weighted mean wear rate was 0.063 mm/year (standard deviation [SD]: 0.061, confidence interval [CI]: 0.049-0.077) for CoCr and 0.047 mm/year (SD: 0.057, CI: 0.033-0.062; P < .01) for ceramic (P < .01). A meta-analysis of 4 studies directly comparing ceramic and CoCr found that CoCr heads demonstrated 0.029 mm/year more wear than ceramic heads (95% CI: 0.026-0.059, P = .306). Mean wear for 32-mm heads was significantly higher for ceramic (P < .01), while mean wear for 36-mm heads was significantly higher for CoCr (P < .01). CONCLUSION: Fourth-generation ceramic femoral heads were found to have significantly lower wear rates than CoCr heads. Unlike previous studies, this meta-analysis included only in vivo studies and those with the same generation of highly XLPE liners.

Microbes have shown potential for the bioremediation of tannery waste polluted soil. During our previous study, it was observed that heavy metal resistant Burkholderia cepacia CS8 augmented growth and phytoremediation capability of an ornamental plant. Objective of the present research work was to evaluate the capability of B. cepacia CS8 assisted Calendula officinalis plants for the phytoremediation of tannery solid waste (TSW) polluted soil. The TSW treatment significantly reduced growth attributes and photosynthetic pigments in C. officinalis. However, supplementation of B. cepacia CS8 which exhibited substantial tolerance to the TSW amended soil, augmented growth traits, carotenoid, proline, and antioxidant enzymes level in C. officinalis under toxic and nontoxic regimes. Inoculation of B. cepacia CS8 augmented plant growth (shoot length 13%, root length 11%), physiological attributes (chlorophyll a 14%, chlorophyll b 17%), antioxidant enzyme activities (peroxidase 24%, superoxide dismutase 31% and catalase 19%), improved proline 36%, phenol 32%, flavonoids 14% and declined malondialdehyde (MDA) content 15% and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) level 12% in C. officinalis at TSW10 stress compared with relevant un-inoculated plants of TSW10 treatment. Moreover, B. cepacia CS8 application enhanced labile metals in soil and subsequent metal uptake, such as Cr 19%, Cd 22%, Ni 35%, Fe 18%, Cu 21%, Pb 34%, and Zn 30%, respectively in C. officinalis plants subjected to TSW10 stress than that of analogous un-inoculated treatment. Higher plant stress tolerance and improved phytoremediation potential through microbial inoculation will assist in the retrieval of agricultural land in addition to the renewal of native vegetation.


During the current study, it was observed that combination of Calendula officinalis and metal tolerant Burkholderia cepacia CS8 not only improved plant growth but also helped phyto-extraction of pollutants present in the tannery solid waste polluted soil. According to our information, research work describing the phytoremediation potential of native metal tolerant microbes and ornamental plants has not been reported in Pakistan.

Sticking to tablet punches is a major issue during drug product manufacturing. Research has shown that sticking involves the interrelationship of powder properties, compression force, length of manufacturing runs and punch quality. Here, we present a novel non-destructive methodology to study the surface metrology of punches to monitor them over their lifetime. This investigation used a non-contact laser interferometer to characterise roughness of commercial standard S7 steel punches coated with chrome that were originally used for commercial scale production that developed a sticking issue. During the development, this phenomenon had not been observed and was not considered a scale-up risk. The profilometer was used to examine the complete surface of these punches to investigate whether they met the acceptability criteria based on BS_ISO_18804 tooling standard. To improve data analysis during changeover, a 3D-printed holder was designed to enable analysis with minimal set-up requirements. Upon investigation, the punches were found to be of an unacceptable roughness and, particularly rough areas of the punch surface profiled, correlated well with areas of visually pronounced sticking. This non-destructive method can be used to produce a more detailed characterisation of punch roughness to ensure surfaces are of an acceptable quality after treatment with coatings.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of substances for which there are widespread concerns about their extreme persistence in combination with toxic effects. It has been argued that PFAS should only be employed in those uses that are necessary for health or safety or are critical for the functioning of society and where no alternatives are available ("essential-use concept"). Implementing the essential-use concept requires a sufficient understanding of the current uses of PFAS and of the availability, suitability, and hazardous properties of alternatives. To illustrate the information requirements under the essential-use concept, we investigate seven different PFAS uses, three in consumer products and four industrial applications. We investigate how much information is available on the types and functions of PFAS in these uses, how much information is available on alternatives, their performance and hazardous properties and, finally, whether this information is sufficient as a basis for deciding on the essentiality of a PFAS use. The results show (i) the uses of PFAS are highly diverse and information on alternatives is often limited or lacking; (ii) PFAS in consumer products often are relatively easy to replace; (iii) PFAS uses in industrial processes can be highly complex and a thorough evaluation of the technical function of each PFAS and of the suitability of alternatives is needed; (iv) more coordination among PFAS manufacturers, manufacturers of alternatives to PFAS, users of these materials, government authorities, and other stakeholders is needed to make the process of phasing out PFAS more transparent and coherent.

Chromium is used in many settings, and hence, it can easily enter the natural environment. It exists in several oxidation states. In soil, depending on its oxidation-reduction potential, it can occur in bivalent, trivalent or hexavalent forms. Hexavalent chromium compounds are cancerogenic to humans. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Cr(VI) on the structure of bacteria and fungi in soil, to find out how this effect is modified by humic acids and to determine the response of Zea mays to this form of chromium. A pot experiment was conducted to answer the above questions. Zea mays was sown in natural soil and soil polluted with Cr(VI) in an amount of 60 mg kg-1 d.m. Both soils were treated with humic acids in the form of HumiAgra preparation. The ecophysiological and genetic diversity of bacteria and fungi was assayed in soil under maize (not sown with Zea mays). In addition, the following were determined: yield of maize, greenness index, index of tolerance to chromium, translocation index and accumulation of chromium in the plant. It has been determined that Cr(VI) significantly distorts the growth and development of Zea mays, while humic acids completely neutralize its toxic effect on the plant. This element had an adverse effect on the development of bacteria of the genera Cellulosimicrobium, Kaistobacter, Rhodanobacter, Rhodoplanes and Nocardioides and fungi of the genera Chaetomium and Humicola. Soil contamination with Cr(VI) significantly diminished the genetic diversity and richness of bacteria and the ecophysiological diversity of fungi. The negative impact of Cr(VI) on the diversity of bacteria and fungi was mollified by Zea mays and the application of humic acids.

Chrome-free leather manufacturing has been acknowledged as a desirable option to eliminate potential environmental and human health risks of conventional chrome tanning. This work applied a sequential bridging-induced densification strategy to produce high-performance chrome-free leather with high crosslinking density derived from the biomass-derived aldehyde (BAT) crosslinking (BAT tanning of leather), followed by terminal Al(III) crosslinking (TAC). The TAC conditions for BAT tanned leather were optimized and the results suggested that the optimized conditions were as follows: the fixation pH was 4.2, the pre-penetration time was 180 min, the fixation temperature was 40 °C, and the dosage of the aluminum tanning agent (ATA) was 0.5% (based on Al2O3). Under the optimized conditions, the resultant BAT-TAC crust leather exhibited favorable overall performances compared with BAT crust leather in terms of higher hydrothermal stability, mechanical strengths, more pleasant uniform color, and comparable smooth grain surface. The obtained high-performance chrome-free leather is scalable, providing an avenue for designing and rationalizing other engineering technology towards high-performance eco-leather production.

Cr(VI) is a toxic metal pollutant existing in industrial effluents. In this study, Fe3O4 and layered double hydroxide (LDH) were inserted into the litchi shell (LS) successively by the co-precipitation method to synthesize the modified magnetic litchi shell adsorbent (MMLS) for removing Cr(VI). The advantageous structure characteristics of MMLS were confirmed by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and the hysteresis loop characterization. The batch experiments of optimizing the conditions (pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, coexisting ions) for removing Cr(VI) were accomplished to in simulated wastewater at room temperature. And the optimal pH of 3 and initial concentration of 100 mg/L in simulated wastewater were similar to that in the actual chrome-plated rinse water with the stable MMLS. The effect of coexisting ions indicated anions and Cr(VI) competed with each other for the adsorption site, but the interactions were negligible in actual chrome-plated rinse water. Chemisorption as a rate-limiting step was confirmed with a good fit of pseudo-second-order kinetics. And the adsorption behavior of MMLS can not be explained by a single theory according to Sips model. The desorption and recycle experiments demonstrated MMLS was reusable in actual chrome-plated rinse water.

BACKGROUND: Metalworkers are said to have heavy exposure to metals, but the amount of released metal ions from alloys and deposition on the hands is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To analyze nickel, cobalt, and chromium in vitro release to the artificial sweat from nails and wire made of different alloys, and to test metal deposition on the fingers of metalworkers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six different samples of nails and wire were kept in artificial sweat for 24 hours and one week, respectively. The metal release was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Eighty-eight consecutive metal plant workers immersed their index fingers and thumbs in separate laboratory tubes filled with deionized water for 2 minutes. The sample analysis for metals was carried out with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). RESULTS: The average released concentration of Ni was 0.0012 µg/cm2 , for Co it was 0.0007 µg/cm2 , and for Cr 0.0037 µg/cm2 after 24 hours and 0.0135, 0.0029, and 0.0042 µg/cm2 , respectively, after 1 week. There was a statistically significant increase in released concentration of Ni during one week: 0.0012 µg/cm2 vs 0.0135 µg/cm2 (P = .04). Medians of the detected Co amount on fingers reflected a statistically significant difference between workplaces: 0.004 µg/cm2 for metalworkers vs 0.001 µg/cm2 for office staff (P = .04). CONCLUSION: Nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), and chromium (Cr) can be released in different concentrations from nails and wire. Detected Ni and Cr levels can elicit dermatitis in already sensitized patients. Co can be extracted from alloys even if not mentioned on material safety data sheets. The finger immersion technique was used for cobalt and chromium detection on fingers for the first time.

Column experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of ion type, ion strength, humic acid (HA), and nanometer alumina (NA) particles on the transport of hexavalent chromium (HC) in saturated porous media. A one-dimensional model is developed to simulate the migration of HC affected by NA particles. The results show that nano-alumina particles would enhance the mobility of HC in saturated porous media. However, the influence of NA on the migration of HC in porous media is complex. When the concentration of NA reaches 30 mg/L, HC has minimum retention parameter and best mobility. The transport of HC also is affected by ion strength and ion type. Higher ionic strength would decrease the retention of HC and enhance its mobility. Compared with sodium ion, calcium ion has larger effects on the transport of HC. Moreover, HA can improve the mobility of HC in saturated porous media, but the corresponding promoting effect decreases with the increase of HA concentration. As nanometer contaminants and HC come into the subsurface environment, findings from this study elucidate the key factors and processes controlling the transport of HC in porous media, which can promote the prediction and assessment of HC in the groundwater system.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the retention force of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) removable dental prosthesis clasps in comparison with a cobalt-chrome-molybdenum control group after storage in artificial saliva. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clasps were milled (Dentokeep (PEEKmilled1), NT digital implant technology; breCAM BioHPP Blank (PEEKmilled2), bredent), pressed (BioHPP Granulat for 2 press (PEEKpressed), bredent), or cast (remanium GM 800+ (cobalt-chrome-molybdenum), Dentaurum); N = 60, n = 15/subgroup. Retention force was examined 50 times/specimen in a pull-off test using the universal testing machine (Zwick 1445), where pull-off force was applied with a crosshead speed of 5 mm/minute until the maximum force dropped by 10%, at different aging levels: (1) initial, after storage in artificial saliva for (2) 90 and (3) 180 days. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA followed by post hoc Scheffé-test and mixed models (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Cobalt-chrome-molybdenum presented the highest retention force. No differences were observed between polyetheretherketone materials. Cobalt-chrome-molybdenum showed a significant decrease of its values after artificial aging, while polyetheretherketone materials presented similar results over the course of aging. Regarding a repetitive insertion and removal, even though PEEKmilled2 and cobalt-chrome-molybdenum showed an initial increase, ultimately, a decrease in retention force was observed for all tested groups. CONCLUSIONS: Although the control group showed significantly higher results, the retention force of polyetheretherketone materials indicate a potential clinical application. Neither the manufacturing process nor artificial aging showed an impact on the retention force of polyetheretherketone clasps. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mechanical properties of novel removable dental prosthesis clasp materials devised to meet the growing esthetic demands of patients need to be investigated to ensure a successful long-term clinical application.
