Visualizing BDSM and AIDS Activism: Archiving Pleasures, Sanitizing History.

The visual archive of AIDS and fetish activism is a rich resource for studying interlinkages between art and science, activism and public health, politics and medicine, pleasure and sexual health prevention. This article explores AIDS and fetish activism imagery from the first two decades of the Norwegian AIDS crisis. Interrogating the materiality and visual context of images - photographs, posters, flyers, and safer sex instructions - it maps out visualization practices in leather, BDSM and AIDS activism. AIDS and fetish imagery made some bodies, pleasures, and political goals visible - and rendered others unseen. The article explores the materiality of images and their visual, social, and historical context of production, and traces their social biographies and afterlives. Fetish images were vehicles for change and actors co-producing history. They took part in destigmatizing BDSM, challenging psychiatric classification, and creating infrastructure and networks between subcultures, communities, and authorities. The visualization of fetish activism was as much about communication strategies as it was about aesthetic, style, and motive. The politics of visibility in Norwegian fetish activism point to the vulnerable project of fighting for acceptance through "respectability," while preserving the individuality and "otherness" of leather and fetish culture.

Rates of Injury and Healthcare Utilization for Kink-Identified Patients.

BACKGROUND: Kink-involved people engage in atypical erotic activities such as bondage, rough sex, and other fetish activities that might risk injury or medical complication. To date, however, no one has examined the rate of injury or healthcare utilization for people who engage in these activities. AIM: To describe the type and rate of injuries from kink activities, and the use of healthcare by kink-involved people, including how many people disclose their involvement in kink when seeking care. METHODS: A survey of 1,398 kink-involved or kink-identified people, using a convenience sampling method. OUTCOMES: The study is the first to report on rates of injury and disclosure of kink involvement to care providers using a large community sample of kink-involved people. RESULTS: A high number of participants did not disclose their kink behavior to their physical healthcare clinician (58.3%) or to their mental healthcare clinician (49.6%). Past experiences of kink-related injuries were relatively common (13.5%), as was the number of people who reported delaying or avoiding healthcare because of anticipated or perceived stigma for kink involvement (19.0%). CLINICAL TRANSLATION: The findings of the current study point to the need for clinicians to address barriers to culturally competent care for kink-involved people. Anticipated stigma leads to non-disclosure of kink involvement and delay in seeking care, thereby creating barriers to health and well-being. STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS: Strengths include a sample size large enough to examine regression models to predict disclosure to care providers, and lifetime rates of injury from kink activities overall. Limitations include the use of a convenience sampling method and self-report survey design, which affect the generalizability of the results. CONCLUSION: The patterns of anticipated stigma, delay or avoidance of care, and concealment of kink and/or BDSM involvement fit the Minority Stress Model, and we argue that kink-identified people should be considered a sexual minority for the purposes of healthcare. Im Gegensatz zu dessen State of Fear (2004), wo die Behandlung eines aktuellen wissenschaftspolitischen Problems - des Klimawandels - mit einer harschen Kritik am Umgang politischer Aktivisten mit wissenschaftlichen Ergebnissen einhergeht, setzt Next Hoffnungen und Ängste ins Zentrum, die im Zusammenhang mit dem 'Human Genome Project' verhandelt wurden. Crichton stellt hier wissenschaftlich-ökonomische Verflechtungen dar, vor denen er schon in seinen Romanen zu Jurassic Park (1990) warnte. Unter der Fragestellung, wie kritische Wissenschaftsreflexion im Medium von Literatur erfolgen kann und was der spezifische Beitrag aus der Wissenschaftsgeschichte wäre, behandelt dieser Essay neben Werken von Michael Crichton (vor allem Next und Lost World, 1997) auch die satirischen Novellen Die verhängnisvollen Eier (1924/1925) und Hundeherz (1926/1968) von Mikhail Bulgakov, da bereits dort die (mögliche) künstliche Hervorbringung von Lebewesen unter der Bedingung eines (versuchten) direkten Zugriffs auf deren Reproduktionsmechanismen fokussiert wurde. This paper was first inspired by Michael Crichton's last thriller, Next (2006), which staged hopes and fears triggered by the completion of the Human Genome Project and by the perfection of Polymerase chain reaction techniques, enabling the replication of DNA on a large scale. These developments nourished fantasies about the artificial (re)construction of living beings from DNA. Crichton had already warned of the fetishization of artificially produced living beings in Jurassic Park and in the novels on which the film was based inventing a futuristic scenario where this was happening on a large scale. Here, the topics of hubris and hybrids were center stage. In Next, the fetishization of life is an effect of the growing encroachment of economic actors upon the life sciences. This paper compares Crichton's criticism of techno-scientific fetishism with Mikhail Bulgakov's critical account of human tinkering with the reproductive organs of humans and non-humans in his two satirical novels The Fateful Eggs and Dog's Heart. The works of both authors link criticism of science with criticism of society. They focus the borders between science and society and analyze the responsibilities of humans who are acting along those borders. The thrillers and satirical novels illustrate the - often violent - power relations between humans and nature and also among humans. Comparing two authors who wrote nearly a century apart from each other and focussing different social systems will help compare longue-durée and more specific forms of techno-scientific fetishism.

Fifty Shades of Stigma: Exploring the Health Care Experiences of Kink-Oriented Patients.

INTRODUCTION: The term kink describes sexual behaviors and identities encompassing bondage, discipline, domination and submission, and sadism and masochism (collectively known as BDSM) and sexual fetishism. Individuals who engage in kink could be at risk for health complications because of their sexual behaviors, and they could be vulnerable to stigma in the health care setting. However, although previous research has addressed experiences in mental health care, very little research has detailed the medical care experiences of kink-oriented patients. AIM: To broadly explore the health care experiences of kink-oriented patients using a community-engaged research approach. METHODS: As part of the Kink Health Project, we gathered qualitative data from 115 kink-oriented San Francisco area residents using focus groups and interviews. Interview questions were generated in collaboration with a community advisory board. Data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Themes relating to kink-oriented patients' experience with health and healthcare. RESULTS: Major themes included (i) kink and physical health, (ii) sociocultural aspects of kink orientation, (iii) the role of stigma in shaping health care interactions, (iv) coming out to health care providers, and (v) working toward a vision of kink-aware medical care. The study found that kink-oriented patients have genuine health care needs relating to their kink behaviors and social context. Most patients would prefer to be out to their health care providers so they can receive individualized care. However, fewer than half were out to their current provider, with anticipated stigma being the most common reason for avoiding disclosure. Patients are often concerned that clinicians will confuse their behaviors with intimate partner violence and they emphasized the consensual nature of their kink interactions. CONCLUSION: Like other sexual minorities, kink-oriented patients have a desire to engage with their health care providers in meaningful discussions about their health risks, their identities, and their communities without fear of being judged. Additional research is needed to explore the experiences of kink-oriented patients in other areas of the country and internationally.

The Marginalization of Kink: Kinkphobia, Vanilla-Normativity and Kink-Normativity.

A recent wave of academic research has highlighted the wide-ranging and negative impacts that stigma against kink has on kinksters. As scholarship continues to explore prejudice and discrimination around kink, this article argues that fresh insight can be found by drawing on adjacent work around other stigmatized sexualities. Over the previous decades, scholars in sexuality studies and queer studies have developed a powerful conceptual framework of "phobias" and "normativities" for thinking about the marginalization of sexual differences. This framework has its origins in the concepts of homophobia, heteronormativity and homonormativity, but its naming conventions and analytical insights have since been extended to address reproduction, romantic love, monogamy, gender identity, etc. This article argues that this conceptual framework should be expanded once again, this time to encompass kink. Building on the nascent use of this conceptual framework within kink scholarship, this article defines and expands on the concepts of kinkphobia and vanilla-normativity, and introduces the new concept of kink-normativity. This article demonstrates how these concepts can help us better talk about and think through the marginalization of kink.

Assessment and Treatment of a Foot Fetish Exhibited by an Adolescent With Autism.

We conducted a functional analysis to identify the specific features of feet responsible for evoking inappropriate sexual behavior (ISB) by an adolescent male with autism. Results showed that bare female and male feet evoked ISB. We then evaluated a treatment consisting of a rule describing appropriate and inappropriate behavior in the presence of bare feet and a verbal reprimand contingent on ISB; the combination of these was effective. Finally, as an additional treatment option, we evaluated an environmental enrichment procedure, which also reduced ISB to low levels.

Paraphilic infantilism, diaperism and pedophilia: A review.

Paraphilic disorders range from nearly normal behaviour to a behaviour which may be considered as destructive or menacing to the society at large. In accordance with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-V, the terms Paraphilia and Paraphilic disorders, denote different interpretations. Multiple paraphilias connected to childhood either directly or indirectly has been documented in scientific literature. Paraphilic Infantilism, Diaperism and Pedophilia constitute major portion among them. Paraphilic infantilism denotes paraphilic desire of being a baby. Diaperism deals with fetishistic behaviour in relation to diapers and pedophilia stands for sexual attraction towards children. Behaviourally these three paraphilias do share some characteristics and show overlapping of certain features, but psychologically they are diverse. In a number of literature on digital media, the terms have been used interchangeably or are described in a manner that creates confusion. However, when described individually they are precisely written, hence it necessitates to be elaborated collectively to surpass the current trends of mixing them. The review focuses on behavioral, developmental, psychological and legal aspects of these paraphilias.

Lady with Erotic Preference for Diapers.

A patient in her 20s was referred to us for psychological assessment due to her depression and suicide attempts. She mentioned being anorgasmic except when diapered and emphasized her erotic preference for diapers. Her childhood included maternal deprivation in an impecunious family headed by an irritable physically disabled father on social assistance. Given the maternal deprivation in childhood, her erotic fixation on diapers parallels the emotional attachment to diapers observed by Harlow in mother deprived infant monkeys. Etiological hypotheses should also include the paradigm of avoidance learning from theories of behavior therapy. Our patient does not wish to change her sexual preference: in such cases, fetishism is not considered as an illness by DSM5. However, she needs to be treated for pathological levels of depression with suicidal ideation and low self-esteem.

Sua abordagem atravessou séculos e até hoje tem consequências diretas na ideia de sexualidade humana contemporânea. Este estudo pretende retomar a história do conceito de fetichismo dentro da Psychopathia Sexualis para demonstrar como, na teoria psiquiátrica de Krafft-Ebing, o fetichismo se tornou mais do que uma patologia ou peculiaridade sexual, passando a designar a manifestação inicial do processo do instinto sexual nos seres humanos, convertendo-se em um conceito-chave para a teoria da sexualidade.

In 1886, psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing published Psychopathia Sexualis, the first manual for diagnosing sexual perversions, thus creating a new perspective for the study of sexuality. To this day, his approach directly influences the idea of contemporary human sexuality. This study intends to resume the history of the concept of fetishism described in Psychopathia Sexualis to show how, according to Krafft-Ebing's psychiatric theory, fetishism became more than a pathology or sexual peculiarity and designates the initial manifestation of the process of sexual instinct in human beings, thus becoming a key concept of the theory of sexuality.

Resumo Este artigo problematiza o aspecto fetichista da imagem do corpo ideal a partir da discussão do calendário de uma clínica de nutrição e estética. Discute-se a dinâmica de formação de massas, conforme a teoria freudiana, para pensar como um padrão de corpo perfeito pode ser eleito como ideal a ser alcançado por indivíduos nas sociedades contemporâneas. A lógica do mercado sustenta a imagem dos corpos ditos perfeitos na posição de fetiche e oferece acesso a essa suposta conquista por meio de produtos e serviços que trariam plenitude. Tal estratégia busca velar a castração oferecendo um substituto palpável que nega a falta e afirma a completude do outro, sustentando uma legião de pessoas que se envolve numa busca quase compulsiva pela realização desse ideal.

Abstract This article analyzes the calendar of a nutrition and aesthetics clinic to discuss the fetishistic aspect of the ideal body image. We verify the dynamics of mass formation, according to Freudian theory, to posit how a perfect body pattern can be elected as the ideal to be achieved by individuals in contemporary societies. The logic of the market sustains the image of the so-called perfect bodies in the position of a fetish, offering access to this supposed conquest through products and services that would lead to fulfilness. This strategy aims to veil castration by offering a palpable substitute that denies the faults and affirms the completeness of others, sustaining a legion of people engaged in an almost compulsive quest towards accomplishing this ideal.

Résumé Cet article questionne l'aspect fétichiste de l'image du corps idéal par l'analyse du calendrier d'une clinique de nutrition et d'esthétique. Nous discutons de la dynamique de la formation de masse, selon la théorie freudienne, pour réfléchir comment un modèle corporel parfait peut être élu comme idéal à atteindre par les individus dans les sociétés contemporaines. La logique du marché soutient l'image des corps dits parfaits comme un fétiche et permet d'accéder à cette supposée conquête à travers des produits et services qui en apporteraient la plénitude. Cette stratégie vise à assurer la castration en offrant un substitut qui nie le manque et affirme la perfection de l'autre, soutenant une légion de personnes qui se lancent dans une quête compulsive pour la réalisation de cet idéal.

Resumen El presente artículo problematiza el aspecto fetichista de la imagen del cuerpo ideal a partir del análisis del calendario de una clínica de nutrición. Se discute la dinámica de formación de masas, según la teoría freudiana, para pensar cómo un patrón de cuerpo perfecto puede ser elegido como lo ideal a ser alcanzado por individuos en las sociedades contemporáneas. La lógica del mercado sostiene la imagen de cuerpos perfectos en fetiches y ofrece acceso a esa supuesta conquista por medio de productos y servicios que traerían la plenitud. Tal estrategia pretende velar la castración, ofreciendo un sustituto que niega la falta y afirma la completud del otro, lo que sostiene una legión de personas involucradas en una búsqueda casi compulsiva para concretizar ese ideal.

La posición tomada ante el complejo de castración imprimirá su marca indeleble en la vida psíquica del sujeto, sobre todo en lo concerniente a su relación con el otro sexo, pues al acentuar el mundo de las diferencias, los intercambios con lo social llevarán siempre su huella. Separación, pérdida y castración son el resorte de la diferenciación subjetiva. De ahí que analizar las implicaciones psíquicas de ese primer enfrentamiento del niño pequeño, con la incompletud del otro, resultará imprescindible para reflexionar su condición actual. La construcción de caso de Santiago muestra a un joven preso en una actuación permanente e insoportable, que lo lleva a buscar compulsivamente, múltiples parejas sexuales, elevando a las mujeres de su vida, al estatuto de objeto fetiche. Las diferentes maneras de desmentir la castración materna generan un tormento obsesivo que se manifiesta a través de una variada sintomatología, en la que siempre se encuentra implicada la destrucción y la muerte. Por lo que convocar durante las sesiones, a la trama genealógica de Santiago, los lugares asignados, las identificaciones y la transmisión de significaciones, representó una vía que permitió abrir los márgenes de una historia que se presentaba en un inicio, como plagada de sentido. The homology between surplus-value and surplus-jouissance on the basis of the capitalist subjectiveness / A homologia entre mais-valia e mais-de-gozar nas bases da subjetividade capitalista

RESUMO: Esse trabalho é motivado pela homologia estabelecida, por Lacan, entre a mais-valia e o mais-de-gozar. Buscamos evidenciar o embasamento dessa homologia e apontar seus efeitos nos fundamentos da subjetividade capitalista. Para tanto, combinamos a leitura do Seminário 16, de Lacan, a uma abordagem de O capital, de Marx. Nesse processo, analisamos as articulações significantes do valor, do dinheiro e do fetiche na conformação da ordem simbólica do discurso capitalista.

Abstract: This paper is an examination of the homology between surplus-value and surplus-jouissance, as set out by Lacan. We seek to demonstrate the basis of this homology and point out its effects on capitalist subjectivity. To this end, we combine a reading of Lacan's Seminar XVI with Marx's Capital. Throughout this process, we analyze how the articulation of signifiers, such as value, money and fetish, configures the symbolic order of capitalist discourse.

Ambas as canções se propõem a apresentar diferentes versões sobre a forma de amar do lado masculino: uma da perspectiva de uma mulher e, a outra, da de um homem. A partir desse ponto de partida, a discussão se operou em torno da bifurcação da vida amorosa, da forma fetichista do homem amar, sobre a noção da mulher como causa de desejo e como sintoma do homem, demarcando com isso o desencontro amoroso inevitavelmente presente nas parcerias sexuais

Assessment and treatment of foot-shoe fetish displayed by a man with autism.

Results of a functional analysis indicated that a man diagnosed with autism engaged in bizarre sexual behavior in the presence of women wearing sandals. Several treatments proved to be ineffective or impractical. By contrast, a response-interruption/time-out procedure quickly eliminated the problem behavior in multiple settings.

Dinheiro e psicanálise / Money and psichoanalysis

O texto parte de conceitos importantes, como valor de uso e valor de troca, mercadoria e fetiche, levando em conta as ideias marxistas e freudianas, na tentativa de conferir um status mais complexo ao tema. Discute também algumas situações peculiares, que ocorrem na clínica psicanalítica, mediadas pelo dinheiro, que resvalam em sentimentos de vergonha, impasses, mal-estar, transferências negativas. E coloca a seguinte questão: até que ponto os psicanalistas estão preparados para lidar com o tema dinheiro, que, ao lado da sexualidade humana, Freud erigiu como grande tabu?.

The text departs from important concepts such as the value of use and exchange, merchandise and fetish. Taking into account the ideas of Marx and Freud, it attempts to confer the theme a more complex status. It also approaches some peculiar situations that occur in the psychoanalitical clinic, mediated by money, which are at the edge of feelings of shame, dilemma, discomfort, negative transferences. And it lays the following question: up to what point are psychoanalists prepared to deal with the issue of money, which, besides human sexuality, was erected by Freud as a great taboo?.

O presente trabalho é fruto de reflexões acerca de estudos bibliográficos sobre a estrutura perversa e sua consequente relação com a Lei. Muitos estudos foram feitos acerca da formação do supereu nas neuroses, no entanto, quando se trata dos outros tipos clínicos (perversão e psicose), a delimitação dessa terceira instância, formulada por Freud a partir da segunda tópica, torna-se, muitas vezes, insuficiente na obra freudiana. Assim, o objetivo precípuo desse trabalho é percorrer o caminho trilhado por Freud, considerando as importantes contribuições de Lacan e outros autores, no que se refere à constituição do supereu nas perversões, buscando estabelecer relações entre a lei, desejo e gozo na sustentação da fantasia do perverso. A fim de que o mesmo fosse concretizado, se fez necessária uma breve análise do delineamento do conceito de supereu como herdeiro do complexo de Édipo e interiorização da lei, para, posteriormente, analisarmos a sua manifestação na perversão.

This work is the result of reflections on bibliographical studies about the structure perverse and its consequent relationship with the Law. Many studies have been done about the constitution of the superego in neuroses, however, when it comes to other structure (perversion and psychosis), this third instance delineation, formulated by Freud from the second topic, it is often insufficient in Freud. Thus, the main objective of this work is to explore the path trodden by Freud, considering the important contributions of Lacan and others, with regard to the constitution of the superego in perversions, trying to establish relationships between law, desire and enjoyment in sustaining fantasy in the perverse. In order for that be implemented, it was necessary to make a brief analysis of the design concept of the superego as the heir of the oedipus complex and internalization of the law to subsequently analyze its manifestation in perversion.

A contemporaneidade é um tempo pleno de desafios, sendo que o desenvolvimento desenfreado do capitalismo não conseguiu dar respostas ao mal-estar gerado pela desigualdade social que essa ordem social é capaz de provocar, fato que repercute diretamente na sociabilidade e formas de subjetivação humana, sobretudo em um contexto de crise e agravamento do desemprego estrutural provocado pelas transformações ocorridas no mundo do trabalho que afetam a todos. Essa reflexão propõe a urgência quanto ao aprofundamento referente ao desrespeito aos direitos infanto-juvenis na sociedade brasileira em face da cultura hedonista e consumista associada ao impacto provocado pelo "fetiche da mercadoria" sobre os adolescentes, em especial aqueles que recorrem ao ato infracional como estratégia de sobrevivência e forma de se inserir em um mundo injusto e perverso. Para isso, resgata-se o significado social atribuído à adolescência na modernidade, como forma de se defender investimentos nessa fase peculiar de desenvolvimento humano, sendo necessário recorrer a diferentes áreas do saber para uma análise do fenômeno que vá além da aparência e do imediatismo. O ato de transgredir leis instituídas é facilmente associado ao termo delinquência, cristalizado na história das políticas sociais brasileiras dedicadas às crianças e adolescentes, de forma a estigmatizá-las, encaminhando-as para instituições privativas de liberdade...

Contemporaneity is a time full of challenges, and the huge development of capitalism has failed to answer satisfactorily the discontents generated by the social inequality that this social order is capable of provoking. That fact directly reflects on sociability and human subjectivation forms, mainly on a crises and aggravation of the structural unemployment, context caused by the changes that occurred in the working world that affects everybody. This reflection suggests the urgency in deepening the discussions about disrespect to juvenile rights in Brazilian society, in view of the hedonistic and consumerist culture associated to the impact provoked by the "merchandise fetish" on teenagers, especially those who practice illegal acts as a strategy to survive and a way of inserting themselves in an unfair and mean world. In order to do that, the social meaning assigned to adolescence nowadays is taken as a way of defending the investments in this peculiar phase of human development. Different knowledge areas are necessary for an analysis of the phenomenon that goes beyond its appearance and immediacy. The act of transgressing official laws is easily associated to delinquency, embodied in the history of Brazilian social policies dedicated to children and adolescents. La contemporaneidad es un tiempo pleno de desafíos, y el desarrollo desenfrenado causado por el capitalismo no ha podido responder a la incomodidad generada por la desigualdad social que esta orden es capaz de causar. Este cuadro se refleja directamente en la sociabilidad, así como en las distintas maneras de la subjetividad humana, especialmente en contexto de crisis y empeoramiento del desempleo estructural, causado por los cambios que ocurren en el ámbito del trabajo y que nos afectan a todos. Esta reflexión sugiere, que la urgencia por profundizar la cuestión relacionada con la falta de respeto por los derechos de los niños y adolescentes en la sociedad brasileña, frente a la cultura hedonista y consumista, asociada al impacto causado por el fetichismo de la mercancía en los adolescentes, especialmente aquellos que recurren al delito como una estrategia para la supervivencia y una manera de inserción en un mundo injusto y perverso. Para tanto, recurrimos al significado social asignado a la adolescencia en la modernidad como una manera de proteger las inversiones en esta fase particular de desarrollo humano, acudiendo a diferentes áreas del conocimiento para un análisis del fenómeno que va más allá de la apariencia y la inmediatez. Cette réflexion démontre l'urgence par rapport à l'approfondissement du mépris aux droits des enfants et adolescentes dans la société brésilienne devant la culture hédoniste et consommiste associées à l'impact du "fétiche de la marchandise" sur les adolescents, spécialement ceux qui recourent à l'acte d'infraction comme stratégie de survie et forme d'insertion dans un monde injuste e pervers. El objetivo de este estudio es mostrar la lógica del contrato masoquista en la relación entre el sujeto y el gran Otro. En este caso, la Verleugnung es el modo de desmentida de “lo que no cesa de no escribirse” en las fórmulas de la sexuación de Jacques Lacan. La diferencia más relevante entre la literatura del amor cortés y este tipo de contrato en el modo en que enfrentan lo imposible, es que la primera es el producto de la sublimación. The purpose of this study is to show the logic of the contract´s masochist in the relation between the subject and the big Other. In this case, the Verleugnung is the way of disavowal “that which does not cease to not write itself” or the impossible in Jacques Lacan's sexuation formulas. The most relevant difference between the literature of courtley love and this sytle of contract about facing the impossible is that the first is the product of sublimation. The contract´s masochist has the nature of a fetish.The importance of the contract´s masochist was a point of coincidence between Jacques Lacan and Gilles Deleuze in the period 1966-1969, and it constitutes a remarkable element for the studies of the perversion in psychoanalysis...

Le but de cette étude est de montrer la logique du contrat masochiste dans la relation entre le sujet et le grand Autre. Dans ce cas, la Verleugnung es le mode de démentie de “ce qui ne cesse pas de ne pas s’écrire" dans les formules de sexuation de Jacques Lacan. Novas notas sobre: o estranho / New notes on: the uncanny

Neste texto procuraremos expandir os horizontes da significação do conceito de estranho (geralmente tomado apenas enquanto alegoria do retorno do recalcado), procurando reabrir fissuras em torno da questão, ressaltando sua condição narrativa ou de experiência dos limites do eu, sua ligação com uma condição primitiva da constituição do psiquismo, a problemática da repetição que lhe acompanha, assim como suas vinculações ao tema do fetiche e da relíquia. Entendemos ser este um conceito que mereceria mais atenção dos psicanalistas – de fato, o texto de Freud obteve mais atenção e desenvolvimentos nos campos da linguística, da crítica e dos estudos literários, da filosofia e da estética, em geral, do que no próprio campo psicanalítico. Além de refletir o próprio funcionamento neurótico do recalque, a oposição familiar/estrangeiro remete também a distinções mais primitivas, tais como eu/não-eu ou dentro/fora. Destacamos ainda o romance “Mar da Fertilidade”, de Yukio Mishima, através do qual apontaremos um aspecto singular da experiência de leitura; além desse, constitui um parêntese especial a questão do fetiche e da relíquia, analisados aqui pelo vértice do estranho.

The present paper expands the horizon of meanings associated with the concept of ‘the uncanny’ (usually taken as an allegory for the return of the repressed). The narrative condition of the uncanny (or the experience of the limits of the ego), its relation to the primitive constitution of the psyche, the aspect of repetition, as well as its association with the ‘fetish’ and the ‘relic’ will be focused. It is our understanding that the concept of the uncanny should receive more attention from the psychoanalytic community. In fact, more attention and developments have been given to it from subjects as Linguistics, Literary Studies, Philosophy and Aesthetics, in general, than from Psychoanalysis itself. Besides reflecting the neurotic functioning, the opposition homely/un-homely (uncanny) also refers to more primitive distinctions, such as self/not-self and inside/outside. The paper also addresses the romance “The Sea of Fertility”, by Yukio Mishima, so as to point out a singular aspect of the reading experience. Finally, the ideas of the fetish and of the relic will be analyzed from the point of view of the uncanny.
