OBJECTIVE: Loss of control over eating (LOC) during pregnancy impacts prenatal health and often co-occurs with depressive symptoms. However, the role of depression history as a risk factor for LOC prior to pregnancy is unclear; information that is essential for effective prenatal health promotion. We examined the association between trajectories of depressive symptoms from childhood to first pregnancy and preconception LOC. METHOD: Participants (N = 1031) were predominantly Black, first-time mothers enrolled in the population-based Pittsburgh Girls Study. LOC and depressive symptoms were measured annually. Pre-pregnancy height and weight, and gestational weight gain data were abstracted from medical records. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in age of first conception for Black and White individuals (t = 8.73, df = 976, p < .001). Latent class analysis revealed four and three classes of depressive symptom trajectories for Black and White individuals, respectively. In the entire sample, the high-changing and moderate-decreasing classes of depressive symptoms were each associated with lifetime, in preconception year and not in preconception year, LOC (X2 = 56.7, p < .001). DISCUSSION: High levels of lifetime depressive symptoms may increase vulnerability to future LOC prior to first pregnancy, suggesting potential targets for interventions to improve maternal health. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE: Both depression history and disordered eating behaviors are known to influence prenatal health. The present study revealed associations between high levels of depressive symptoms from childhood through first pregnancy and loss of control over eating that included the year prior to conception. Results highlight potential targets for preconception interventions with relevance for future prenatal health.

PURPOSE: This paper aimed to explore the association between the patterns of perceived parenting styles and adolescents' night eating syndrome symptoms and correlates, including sleep quality, weight status, loss of control over eating, and psychological distress. METHODS: A sample of 455 Chinese adolescents (54.5% females, aged 12-15 years) were included in the current study. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was adopted to examine the patterns of perceived parenting styles. The three-step approach was used to explore the differences in night eating syndrome symptoms and correlates between different profiles. RESULTS: A four-profile solution was found to fit the data best, and the four profiles were labeled as positive parenting, negative parenting, highly engaged parenting, and lowly engaged parenting. Subsequent analyses showed that adolescents across profiles exhibited significant differences in night eating syndrome symptoms and correlates. Specifically, adolescents in the positive parenting profile generally had the lowest scores in night eating and its correlates, while those in the negative parenting group reported the highest scores in night eating and its correlates. CONCLUSION: Using a person-centered approach (i.e., LPA), the present study identified four distinct patterns of perceived parenting styles in a sample of Chinese adolescents, with night eating and related symptomatology differing across each profile. Future interventions targeting night eating among adolescents may consider the potential influence from the patterns of perceived parenting styles to have a better intervention outcome. OBJECTIVE: Loss of control over eating (LOC) is common among adolescents and is associated with negative developmental outcomes. Low self-regulation, and specifically low inhibitory control, is increasingly emphasized as an underlying factor in LOC. However, the specific context in which these capacities fail remains unclear. The affect regulation model proposes that negative affect may trigger LOC; however, research has mostly assessed trait negative affect using questionnaires, whereas measuring state negative affect is needed to determine its triggering role. Therefore, this study examined the interaction between inhibitory control and state negative affect in predicting LOC among adolescents using an experimental mood-induction design. METHOD: Participants were 50 adolescents (10-18 years; 76% girls) from the general community. Participants first reported on their self-regulatory and inhibitory control capacities. They were then assigned to a sad or neutral mood-induction (using a film clip), followed by a multi-item food buffet from which they could eat as much as they liked. Finally, participants reported on their experience of loss of control while eating. RESULTS: Inhibitory control (but not self-regulation in general) interacted with the mood-induction to predict LOC. Adolescents with low inhibitory control experienced significantly more LOC, but only in the sad mood condition. DISCUSSION: The experience of negative affect appears to be an important trigger for LOC in adolescents with low inhibitory control. With a view to prevention and early intervention of LOC, inhibitory control training may be most effective in contexts where adolescents experience high levels of negative affect.

PURPOSE: Bariatric surgery is the most effective long-term treatment for sustained weight loss in obesity. Studies have shown that not all patients lose the expected amount of weight. The aim of this study was to develop a better understanding of which behavioral and psychological factors are associated with suboptimal weight loss. METHODS: The present paper describes a cross-sectional study that included 140 participants. The mean follow-up period after bariatric surgery was 3.16 years. Eating disorder pathology (Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire), impulsivity (Barratt Impulsiveness scale-II) and depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory) were compared with successful and suboptimal participants. A weight loss of more than or equal to 50% of excess weight, was considered to be successful. RESULTS: More than 81% of the participants met the criterion for successful weight loss. The suboptimal weight loss group reported more symptoms of eating disorder pathology (p = .001), more loss of control over eating (p = .001), and more avoidant behavior due to poor body image (p < .001). The suboptimal weight loss group scored higher on impulsivity (p = .007) and on depression (p < .001). More early weight loss was associated with better weight outcome later on (r = .491). Reporting more eating disorder pathology, a longer follow-up period and pre-operative super-obesity (body mass index ≥ 50 kg/m2) at the time of surgery were associated with poorer weight loss (p < .001). CONCLUSION: Eating disorder pathology, loss of control over eating and avoidant behavior due to poor body image, as well as depressive symptoms and impulsivity, (as reported postoperatively) are associated with suboptimal weight loss. Level III: Case-control analytic study.

OBJECTIVE: Dual-pathway models propose that loss of control over eating (LOC) is the result of an imbalance between weaker regulatory and stronger reactive processes. However, these processes are generally captured with only one assessment method, leading to mixed findings. Additionally, it is unclear whether regulatory difficulties are generic or food-specific. Therefore, the aim of this study was twofold: (1) to investigate the interaction between regulatory and reactive processes in predicting the presence of LOC in adolescents, using both self-report questionnaires and behavioral tasks, and (2) to examine whether generic or food-specific regulatory processes interact with reactive processes to predict the presence of LOC. METHOD: A community sample of 295 adolescents (10-17 years; 67.2% girls; M = 13 years; SD = 1.99) was allocated to a LOC-Group (n = 93) or a NoLOC-Group (n = 202) based on a self-report questionnaire which assessed whether participants had experienced LOC over the past month (Children's Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire). Both self-report questionnaires and behavioral tasks were used to measure regulatory (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function and go/no-go task, respectively) and reactive (Behavioral Activation Scale and dot probe task, respectively) processes. Some adolescents completed a generic go/no-go task and others a food-specific version. Binary logistic regressions were conducted with LOC as the categorical dependent variable and regulatory and reactive processes (and their interaction) as the independent variables. RESULTS: In line with dual-pathway models, the combination of weaker regulatory and stronger reactive processes was associated with the presence of LOC. This was evident from both the self-report scales and the behavioral tasks. Preliminary results further suggest that regulatory difficulties seem to be food-specific. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide multi-method evidence for the dual-pathway account of self-regulation in LOC among adolescents. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: Research evidence supports the clinical significance of subjective feelings of loss of control over eating; however, limited attention has been given to how this construct is assessed. Two measures have been developed in recent years (i.e., Eating Loss of Control Scale [ELOC] and Loss of Control over Eating Scale [LOCES]), but further validation in clinical and non-clinical samples is needed. METHOD: The current study evaluated the psychometric properties, including factor structure, criterion validity, and measurement invariance of the ELOC and LOCES across two groups: (a) a clinical sample of individuals with eating disorders (n = 106) and (b) a non-clinical sample of college students (n = 321). RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the 16-item version of the ELOC and 7-item brief version of the LOCES provided good fit to the data in both samples. These measures were highly correlated (r = .83-.87) and associated with binge-eating and related psychopathology. The ELOC demonstrated partial invariance between men and women and between the clinical and non-clinical samples. The LOCES-brief demonstrated full invariance between men and women and partial invariance between the clinical and non-clinical samples. DISCUSSION: Findings suggest that the 16-item ELOC and 7-item LOCES are reliable measures of severity of loss of control eating in clinical and non-clinical samples. Given the brevity of the LOCES-brief and evidence for measurement invariance across sex, it is recommended over the ELOC in heterogeneous samples. Future research is needed to confirm the validity of these measures across individuals with and without eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Loss of control over eating is common among adolescents and is associated with negative developmental outcomes. Recent evidence points to impaired self-regulation, and more specifically poor inhibitory control, as a contributing factor to loss of control over eating among adults; however evidence in adolescent samples is limited. Moreover, in line with dual-process models, researchers have recently started to investigate the moderating role of automatic processes in this relationship, but again studies in adolescents are lacking. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to: (1) investigate whether there is an association between poor inhibitory control and loss of control over eating also among adolescents, and (2) explore whether this relationship is moderated by automatic processing. METHOD: A community sample of 124 adolescents (10-17 years; 65.3% girls; Mage = 14 years; SD = 1.90) was divided into a 'Loss of Control Group' (n = 30) and a 'No Loss of Control Group' (n = 94) based on a clinical interview. Inhibitory control and automatic processing (general and food specific) were measured by self-report questionnaires. RESULTS: Adolescents in the Loss of Control Group reported significantly more problems with overall self-regulation compared to the No Loss of Control Group; however, there was no group difference for inhibition specifically. Contrary to dual-process predictions, there was a trend significant interaction between poor inhibitory control and weaker food specific automatic processing in explaining loss of control over eating. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence was found for problems with overall self-regulation in adolescents with loss of control over eating. Concerning the specific role of inhibitory control, future studies should replicate whether automatic processing is indeed a crucial moderator.

OBJECTIVE: This study describes the development, content validity, and convergent validity of the Loss of Control over Eating Scale (LOCES). METHOD: An initial pool of 56 items covering 13 facets of loss-of-control eating was assembled by reviewing qualitative literature, clinical descriptions, and research on binge eating. Eating disorder experts (n = 34) and eating disorder clients (n = 22) rated each proposed item's clarity and relevance to the construct of loss-of-control eating, rated 13 facets for their relevance to the construct, and provided open-ended feedback about the items and facets. Based on the experts' and clients' quantitative and qualitative feedback, scale items were clarified, 28 items were added, and 10 were deleted. University students (n = 476; 70% female, mean age = 20.4 years) completed the resulting 74-item questionnaire, rating how often they had the experience identified in the item while eating in the last 4 weeks. They also completed the measures of eating disturbance, general distress, functional impairment, and general self-control. RESULTS: The resulting 24-item LOCES (Cronbach's α = .96) retained items with highest item-total correlations and coverage of the 12 construct facets that experts rated as important. The LOCES was significantly correlated with eating disturbances, general distress, functional impairment, and general self-control. Three subfactors were identified: behavioral, cognitive/dissociative, and positive/euphoric aspects of loss-of-control eating. A brief, seven-item version of the LOCES was developed and validated. DISCUSSION: A thorough process of development, content validation, and psychometric evaluation in multiple samples yielded the multifaceted LOCES and its brief form. These instruments may be useful in assessing loss-of-control eating in both clinical and nonclinical settings.

OVERVIEW: In recent years, there has been increasing clinical and empirical interest in the concept of pediatric loss of control over eating, particularly about its link with the executive functions related to the concept of impulsivity, such as inhibitory control and reward sensitivity. However, there has yet to be a comprehensive literature synthesis about the associations between these variables. A comprehensive literature synthesis would help identify future research directions to advance the field in this area. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence concerning the associations between loss of control over eating, inhibitory control, and reward sensitivity in children and adolescents. METHODS: The systematic review was conducted according to the guidelines proposed by PRISMA in Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and PsycINFO. The Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies was used to assess the risk of bias. RESULTS: Twelve studies met the selection criteria and were included in the final review. Overall, methodological heterogeneity, variability in assessment methods, and the age of participants make it difficult to draw general conclusions. Nevertheless, most studies with community samples of adolescents indicate that inhibitory control difficulties are linked to the concept of loss of control eating. The presence of obesity seems to be associated with inhibitory control difficulties, regardless of the presence of loss of control eating. Studies on reward sensitivity are scarcer. However, it has been suggested that higher reward sensitivity is related to loss of control eating behaviors in young people, particularly binge eating. CONCLUSIONS: The literature on the link between loss of control eating and trait-level facets of impulsivity (low inhibitory control and higher reward sensitivity) among young people remains limited, and more studies on children are needed. Findings from this review may make healthcare professionals more aware of the potential clinical importance of targeting the trait-level facets of impulsivity and help to inform existing and future weight-loss/maintenance interventions in childhood and adolescence.

PURPOSE: The study assessed the relationships between sociodemographics, mental health, and prospective changes in loss of control over eating (LOCE). METHODS: Sixty-nine participants (Mage = 39.81 years, SD = 12.25; 49.3% female) completed a survey assessing sociodemographics, mental health, and LOCE at three time points. RESULTS: A one-way repeated-measures ANOVA revealed statistically significant differences between the Wave 1 and Wave 3 LOCE. Mixed between-within subjects ANOVAs revealed a main effects of time, essential worker status, and mental health constructs. Interaction effects were observed for sex, anxiety, and stress with time. CONCLUSION: Findings provide insight into eating behaviors during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The loss of control over eating (LOCE) is frequently cited as a core process of eating disturbances. In contrast, mindful eating and intuitive eating have been identified as adaptive styles of eating and have been associated with positive psychological constructs. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate whether mindful or intuitive eating are potential protective factors for the loss of control over eating. METHODS: 1155 participants (64.2 % female) were recruited from a large university. Participants were administered select subscales of the Intuitive Eating Scale - 2nd edition (IES-2) and Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ), and the brief Loss of Control over Eating Scale (LOCES-B). RESULTS: Controlling for BMI and age, intuitive and mindful eating were significantly associated with LOCE, F (8,966) = 114.78, p < .001, R2 = 0.49. Both IES-2 subscales were negatively associated with LOCE: 1) eating for physical rather than emotional reasons and 2) reliance on hunger and satiety cues, p < .001. One MEQ subscale was negatively associated with LOCE: disinhibition, p < .001. The MEQ subscales assessing awareness and external cues were not significantly associated with LOCE. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that while some forms of mindful eating and intuitive eating are potential protective factors, others may be less relevant to LOCE. These findings have implications for treatment, as they suggest intuitive eating may counteract the loss of control over eating. The findings also provide evidence for convergent validity of the LOCES by clarifying positive constructs that may protect against the development of this core eating pathology.

INTRODUCTION: One in three adolescents frequently consume unhealthy snacks, which is associated with negative developmental outcomes. To date, it remains unclear how intrapersonal factors account for food choices in adolescents. Guided by the dual-pathway model, the current study aimed to: (1) examine the joint contribution of inhibitory control and attentional bias in predicting unhealthy food choices in adolescents, and (2) determine whether this mechanism is more pronounced in adolescents who experience loss of control over eating (LOC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A community sample of 80 adolescents (65% female; 10-17 years old, M age = 13.28, SD = 1.94) was recruited. Based on a self-report questionnaire, 28.7% of this sample reported at least one episode of LOC over the past month. Food choice was assessed using a computerized food choice task. Both inhibitory control and attentional bias were measured with behavioral tasks (go/no-go and dot probe task, respectively). Binary logistic regressions were conducted to address the research questions. RESULTS: Inhibitory control and attentional bias did not significantly interact to predict unhealthy food choices. However, there was a significant three-way interaction between inhibitory control, attentional bias and LOC. For adolescents without LOC, the combination of poor inhibitory control and low attentional bias was significantly associated with unhealthy food choice. Surprisingly, for adolescents with LOC, there was no significant association between unhealthy food choice and inhibitory control or attentional bias. DISCUSSION: Dual-pathway processes do not seem to add to the explanation of food choice behavior for adolescents with LOC. For adolescents who do not experience LOC, those with poor inhibitory control combined with low attentional bias might be at particular risk for making unhealthy food choices.

BACKGROUND: Grazing, the repetitious and unplanned eating of small amounts of food with or without a sense of loss of control (LOC), is an eating pattern of recent interest which is highly prevalent in eating disorders and obesity. The current study aimed to (1) assess psychometric properties of a short inventory of grazing (SIG), consisting of a "grazing in general" item and a "compulsive/LOC grazing" item and (2) examine associations between compulsive and non-compulsive grazing and body mass index (BMI), eating disorder psychopathology, distress and health-related quality of life. METHODS: Participants recruited from a university and the community (n = 227; 75.3% female; age = 25.00 (9.88; 17.58-57.17) years; BMI = 23.24 (4.91, 14.20-46.06) kg/m2) completed an online test battery including the SIG. Parametric and non-parametric statistics were computed to assess internal consistency, test-retest reliability and construct validity, to test associations between the SIG and the other study variables, and to examine between-group differences. RESULTS: The SIG demonstrated appropriate psychometric properties. Results indicated that both grazing in general and low-frequency LOC grazing are common; however, LOC grazing of moderate-severe frequency and/or associated with marked distress is unusual. Frequency of LOC grazing, but not grazing in general, was significantly associated with higher BMI, psychological distress, compensatory behaviours and lower mental health-related quality of life. The presence of compulsive grazing was also associated with eating disorder caseness and binge-type eating disorder diagnostic groups. CONCLUSIONS: Results support the positioning of "compulsive" LOC grazing on a continuum of problematic eating. The SIG is a parsimonious measure of this eating pattern of emergent interest.

Obesity is a public health concern resulting in widespread personal, social, and economic burden. Many individuals with obesity report feeling unable to stop eating or to control their food intake (i.e., a loss of control over eating) despite their best efforts. Experiencing loss of control over eating predicts further eating pathology and is a key feature of binge eating. Mindfulness (i.e., awareness and acceptance of current thoughts, feelings, sensations, and surrounding events) has emerged as a potential strategy to treat such eating disorder behaviors, but it is not known whether there is merit in investigating this strategy to address binge eating in postmenopausal women with obesity. Thus, this study aimed to examine the relationships between binge eating and mindfulness in postmenopausal women with obesity seeking weight loss treatment. Participants (n = 101) were assessed with the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, the Loss of Control over Eating Scale, the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, and the Langer Mindfulness Scale. Participants´ overall scores on both mindfulness scales were significantly and negatively correlated with binge eating frequency or the severity of loss of control over eating. Moreover, participants who reported fewer binge eating episodes were significantly more mindful than those who reported greater frequencies of binge eating episodes within the past 28 days. These findings suggest a merit in investigating the use of mindfulness-based therapies to treat binge eating in postmenopausal women with obesity.

Grazing, the unstructured, repetitive eating of small amounts of food, is a pattern of eating which has been associated with negative outcomes following bariatric surgery. Less is known about grazing in eating disorders and in non-surgical obese samples. This review aims to critically examine the existing research on the prevalence of grazing, associated treatment outcomes, and clinical correlates in adults with eating disorders and/or obesity, in clinical and community settings. A systematic electronic database search yielded 38 studies which met inclusion criteria for the review. A meta-analysis was conducted using prevalence data from 32 studies (31 datasets). Mean pooled prevalence in obesity (n=26 studies) was 33.20% (95% CI [27.54, 39.11]) at pre-weight loss treatment, 28.16% (95% CI [17.86, 39.73]) at follow-up, and 23.32% (95% CI [3.07, 52.04]) in the community. Nine studies provided prevalence estimates in eating disorders: 58.25% (95% CI [52.75, 63.66]) in bulimia nervosa; 67.77% (95% CI [44.96, 87.13]) in binge eating disorder; and 34.31% (95% CI [26.56, 42.49]) in anorexia nervosa. The results suggest that grazing is widely prevalent within obesity and eating disorders. There is mixed evidence to suggest that grazing (especially a "compulsive" subtype including a sense of loss of control) is associated with poorer weight loss treatment outcomes in obesity, lower mood, increased eating disorder symptomatology, and decreased mental health-related quality of life. Differences in the operationalisation of grazing may account for inconsistent findings in regards to specific correlates and risks associated with this behaviour; therefore, there is an urgent need to refine and adopt a consistent definition of grazing.

The present study aimed to further validate the Loss of Control Over Eating Scale (LOCES) for use with undergraduate men and women with and without eating disorder (ED) symptoms. A total of 261 participants completed the LOCES and the Eating Disorder Examination - Questionnaire (EDE-Q) and were identified as non-clinical or having probable ED symptomatology based on previously used EDE-Q cutoff scores. Results indicated that the LOCES and its subscales were significantly associated with and a significant predictor of global ED pathology and binge episode frequency. The LOCES behavioral subscale appeared to be a stronger predictor of episode frequency compared to other subscales. The ED pathology groups reported significantly higher LOCES scores compared to the non-ED pathology groups. Binary logistic regression analyses revealed that the LOCES was able to accurately distinguish between those with ED pathology and those without ED pathology in the majority of cases. Findings from the present study suggest that the LOCES is highly predictive of ED pathology, strongly associated with ED cognitions and behaviors, and an accurate index for global eating disorder pathology. Future directions for research are discussed.
