RESUMO
The seedling survival rate, yield, and individual weight of Gastrodia elata is closely related to the soil relative water content(RWC) and the growth characteristics of the associated fungi Armillaria spp. This study explored the effects of the soil RWC on the growth characteristics of Armillaria spp. and the seedling production of G. elata f. glauca, aiming to provide guidance for breeding G. elata f. glauca and selecting elite strains of Armillaria. According to the growth characteristics on the medium for activation, thirty strains of Armillaria were classified into 4 clusters. Two strains with good growth indicators were selected from each cluster and cultiva-ted with immature tuber(Mima) and the branches of the broad-leaved trees in a water-controlled box. The results showed that the Armillaria clusters with uniaxial branches of rhizoid cords, such as clusters â ¢ and â £, were excellent clusters in symbiosis with G. elata f. glauca. The soil RWC had significant effects on the growth characteristics of Armillaria strains and the seedling survival rate, yield, and individual weight of G. elata f. glauca. The growth characteristics of Armillaria strains and the seedling survival rate, yield, and individual weight of G. elata f. glauca in the case of the soil RWC being 75% were significantly better than those in the case of other soil RWC. Cultivating Mima with elite strains of Armillaria, together with branches of broad-leaved trees, in the greenhouses with the artificial control of the soil RWC, can achieve efficient seedling production and Mima utilization of G. elata f. glauca.

Plants grow in a variable environment in regard to soil water and light driving photochemical reactions. Light energy exceeding plant capability to use it for photochemical reactions must be dissipated by processes of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of various components of NPQ on the response of Arabidopsis thaliana to fluctuating light and water availability. A laboratory experiment with Arabidopsis thaliana wild type (WT) and mutants npq1 and npq4 grown under optimum or reduced water availability was conducted. Dark-adapted plants were illuminated with fluctuating light (FL) of two intensities (55 and 530 µmol m-2 s-1) with each of the phases lasting for 20 s. The impact of water availability on the role of zeaxanthin and PsbS protein in NPQ induced at FL was analysed. The water deficit affected the dynamics of NPQ induced by FL. The lack of zeaxanthin or PsbS reduced plant capability to cope with FL. The synergy of both of these components was enhanced in regard to the amplitude of NPQ in the drought conditions. PsbS was shown as a component of primary importance in suiting plant response to FL under optimum and reduced water availability.

Wheat is produced worldwide over six continents with the European Union, China, India, Russia, and the United States as major producer countries. The productivity was recorded 749 million tons by harvesting from 220-million-hectare land. It is the need of the hour to develop stress-tolerant wheat varieties to enhance the productivity by 60% to provide food security to 9.6 billion-world population by 2050. Although the genotypes have been identified for heat, drought and salt tolerance, their underlying mechanism for tolerance is poorly understood. The detailed understanding of the mechanism and identification of critical factors participating in multiple abiotic stress tolerance is essential. In the present study, the contrasting wheat genotypes were intensely characterized and assessed for the expression of different stress responsive genes under lab conditions. The expression analysis revealed that SHN1, DREB6, NHX2 and AVP1 were found to be highly induced under heat, salt and drought stresses in wheat. Thus, these genes can be used as signature genes to identify the multiple stress-tolerant varieties in the breeding program. The novel variants of these genes can be targeted through breeding or genetic engineering or genome editing strategies to develop multiple abiotic stress tolerant wheat varieties.

Water limits crop productivity, so selecting for a minimal yield gap in drier environments is critical to mitigate against climate change and land-use pressure. We investigated the responses of relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, and metabolites in flag leaves of commercial wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars to three drought treatments in the glasshouse and in field environments. We observed strong genetic associations between glasshouse-based RWC, metabolites, and yield gap-based drought tolerance (YDT; the ratio of yield in water-limited versus well-watered conditions) across 18 field environments spanning sites and seasons. Critically, RWC response to glasshouse drought was strongly associated with both YDT (r2=0.85, P<8E-6) and RWC under field drought (r2=0.77, P<0.05). Moreover, multiple regression analyses revealed that 98% of genetic YDT variance was explained by drought responses of four metabolites: serine, asparagine, methionine, and lysine (R2=0.98; P<0.01). Fitted coefficients suggested that, for given levels of serine and asparagine, stronger methionine and lysine accumulation was associated with higher YDT. Collectively, our results demonstrate that high-throughput, targeted metabolic phenotyping of glasshouse-grown plants may be an effective tool for selection of wheat cultivars with high field-derived YDT.

Drought tolerance in plants is a complex trait involving morphological, physiological, and biochemical mechanisms. Hundreds of genes underlie the response of plants to the stress. For crops, selecting cultivars that can produce economically significant yields under drought is a priority. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is considered as drought sensitive crop, although cultivar-dependent differences in tolerance have been described. Cultivar 'Katahdin' possesses many appropriate characteristics and is widely used for breeding purposes worldwide; it also has enhanced tolerance to drought stress. In this study, we evaluated cv. 'Katahdin' and a half-sib family of 17 Katahdin-derived cultivars for leaf relative water content (RWC) and tuber yield under drought stress. The yields of cultivars 'Wauseon', 'Katahdin', 'Magura', 'Calrose', and 'Cayuga' did not significantly decline under drought stress. Among these five, Wauseon exhibited the lowest reduction in both tuber yield and relative water content under water shortage. The data showed that 'Wauseon' is the most attractive cultivar for studies of molecular and physiological processes under drought and for potato breeding due to low yield losses that correspond with high RWC values. This cultivar can serve as a reservoir of potentially useful genes to develop cultivars with enhanced tolerance to this abiotic stress.
RESUMO
A hybrid learning method of a software-based backpropagation learning and a hardware-based RWC learning is proposed for the development of circuit-based neural networks. The backpropagation is known as one of the most efficient learning algorithms. A weak point is that its hardware implementation is extremely difficult. The RWC algorithm, which is very easy to implement with respect to its hardware circuits, takes too many iterations for learning. The proposed learning algorithm is a hybrid one of these two. The main learning is performed with a software version of the BP algorithm, firstly, and then, learned weights are transplanted on a hardware version of a neural circuit. At the time of the weight transplantation, a significant amount of output error would occur due to the characteristic difference between the software and the hardware. In the proposed method, such error is reduced via a complementary learning of the RWC algorithm, which is implemented in a simple hardware. The usefulness of the proposed hybrid learning system is verified via simulations upon several classical learning problems.
RESUMO
Silicon (Si) can significantly improve the salt tolerance of plants, but its mechanism remains unclear. In this study, role of abscisic acid (ABA) in Si derived salt resistance in tobacco seedling was investigated. Under salt stress, the photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate of tobacco seedlings were reduced by 86.17%, 80.63%, and 67.54% respectively, resulting in a decrease in biomass. The application of Si found to mitigate these stress-induced markers. However, positive role of Si was mainly attributed to the enhanced expression of aquaporin genes, which helped in enhancing root hydraulic conductance (Lpr) and ultimately maintaining the leaf relative water content (RWC). Moreover, sodium tungstate, an ABA biosynthesis inhibitor, was used to test the role of ABA on Si-regulating Lpr. The results indicated that the improvement of Lpr by Si was diminished in the presence of ABA inhibitor. In addition, it was observed that the ABA content was increased due to the Si-upregulated of ABA biosynthesis genes, namely NtNCED1 and NtNCED5. Conversely, the expression of ABA metabolism gene NtCYP7O7A was found to be reduced by Si. Together, this study suggested that Si increased ABA content, leading to enhanced efficiency of water uptake by the roots, ultimately facilitating an adequate water supply to maintain leaf water balance. As a result, there was an improvement in salt resistance in tobacco seedling.

Drought stress is a universal crisis in sustaining the growth and production of major legumes, including the chickpea. Drought severely reduces the biomass of chickpea plants, with the effect on leaves appearing the most apparent. The aim of this study was to investigate, using various physiological and biochemical markers throughout the pod filling stage, how 78 desi chickpea genotypes tolerated drought stress. Most of the evaluated characteristics showed significant variations between control and drought treatments. The mean performance of most of the investigated parameters significantly decreased under moisture-stressed conditions. RWC, SWD, MSI, and CTD were investigated under terminal drought-stressed conditions. Except for saturated water deficit (SWD), all remaining characteristics declined with increasing stress. Genotypes SAGL152210, SAGL152252, SAGL152347, SAGL22-115, and JG11 were recognized as drought-tolerant based on physiological characteristics. Biochemical markers viz., protein content, total soluble sugar, lipid peroxidation, and proline content, had an impact on osmotic adjustment. Based on non-enzymatic biochemical traits, genotypes SAGL22-115, ICC4958, ICCV201108, ICCV201107, SAGL152252, and JG11 were identified for their capability to survive under drought-stressed conditions. H2O2 content, CAT, SOD, POD, APX, and DPPH were considered antioxidant agents. Genotypes SAGL152208, SAGL22-105, SAGL22-112, ICC201108, SAGL152278, SAGL152252, SAGL162371, SAGL162390, ICC 4958, and JG315 may be considered drought-tolerant based on antioxidant activities. These genotypes are believed to be better equipped with physio-biochemical mechanisms and antioxidant defense systems at the cellular level and can be used in breeding programs to breed drought-tolerant cultivar(s). They can also be screened in the future, allowing the line(s) that have remained consistent over time to be recognized and registered as drought-tolerant donors.
RESUMO
Deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) is characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity that infiltrates at least 5-mm deep below the peritoneal layer. Imagining examinations are the first-choice methods to detect DIE. The aim of this study is to assess whether rectal water contrast transvaginal sonography (RWC-TVS) can be a useful tool for the estimation of the size of deep bowel endometriotic nodules. This retrospective study includes 31 patients subjected to RWC-TVS who underwent surgery due to deep bowel endometriosis between January 2021 and December 2022. Nodule dimensions measured via ultrasound were compared to those of histopathological samples taken after surgery. In total, 52% of patients had endometriosis limited only to the intestines, 19% had endometriotic nodules located at uterosacral ligaments and posterior vaginal fornix, 6% at the anterior compartment, and 13% at a different location. Additionally, 6% of patients had nodules at more than two locations. In all but one case, the intestinal nodules could be seen on RWC-TVS images. The largest nodule dimension measured via RWC-TVS and the size of the equivalent histopathological sample correlated (R = 0.406, p = 0.03). Thus, RWC-TVS allows for the detection of DIE and moderate estimation of the nodule sizes and should be practiced during a diagnostic process.
RESUMO
Pistacia atlantica Desf. (Beneh) is an important woody species that has been facing significant challenges to its natural regeneration and reforestation in Iran. This study investigates the interaction of soil moisture and shade on growth, chemical contents, and morphological and physiological characteristics of Beneh saplings. One-year-old Beneh saplings were treated with varying amounts of soil moisture (20, 50, and 100% of field capacity) and shade (0, 30, and 50% of full sunlight) in a split-plot experiment of a randomized complete block design in semiarid conditions of the Alborz Research Station of the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands (RIFR) in Iran. The results indicate that soil moisture significantly affects the water content of the leaf, total chlorophyll, proline content, activity of catalase enzyme, leaf dry biomass, leaflet area, and dry stem biomass in the leaf. Shade significantly affected total chlorophyll, catalase enzyme activity, specific leaflet area, relative water content of the leaf, proline content, dry root biomass, and leaflet area. The interaction of shade and soil moisture significantly affected seedling height, catalase enzyme activity, specific leaflet area, and nitrogen and potassium content of the leaf. Shade moderates the stress of drought on Beneh saplings, but shading of Beneh saplings is not recommended in conditions where there is no concern about soil moisture. These conclusions can be used to improve the production of Beneh saplings in nurseries.

The vegetative desiccation tolerance of Selaginella brachystachya has been evaluated for its ability to revive from a desiccation (air dry) state and start normal functioning when rehydrated. In this study, S. brachystachya was identified by DNA barcoding. Experiments were conducted using the detached hydrated, desiccated and rehydrated fronds under laboratory conditions to understand the mechanism of revival upon the water availability. Scanning Electron Microscope images during desiccation showed closed stomata and inside curled leaves. Chlorophyll concentration decreased by 1.1 fold in desiccated state and recovered completely upon rehydration. However, the total carotenoid content decreased 4.5 fold while the anthocyanin concentration increased 5.98 fold and the CO2 exchange rate became negative during desiccation. Lipid peroxidation and superoxide radical production were enhanced during desiccation by 68.32 and 73.4%, respectively. Relative electrolyte leakage was found to be minimal during desiccation. Activities of antioxidant enzymes, namely peroxidase (158.33%), glutathione reductase (107.70%), catalase (92.95%) and superoxide dismutase (184.70%) were found to be higher in the desiccated state. The proline concentration increased by 1.4 fold, starch concentration decreased 3.9 fold and sucrose content increased 2.8 fold during desiccation. Upon rehydration, S. brachystachya recovered its original morphology, physiological and biochemical functions. Our results demonstrate that S. brachystachya minimizes desiccation stress through a range of morphological, physiological and biochemical mechanisms. These results provide useful insights into desiccation tolerance mechanisms for potential utilization in enhancing stress tolerance in crop plants. In this review article, I examine seven commonly used approaches to research in socio-ecological practice and share insights about their defining characteristics, similarities, differences and connections. I derived these approaches and gained insights through the RWC-Schön-Stokes model, a theoretical framework for codifying, tabulating, examining and comparing multiple ways of methodical knowing in socio-ecological systems. For this reason, I begin with an introduction of the model and, in a chronological order, provide a review of its association with three intellectual ancestors: the Bush linear model (1945), the Stokes quadrant model (1997) and the Schön-Stokes model (2017).
RESUMO
In the era of climate change, decreased precipitation and increased evapo-transpiration hampers the yield of several cereal crops along with the soil salinity and poor ground water resource. Wheat being the moderately tolerant crop face many challenges in the arid and semi-arid regions under irrigated agriculture. In view of this, the study was planned to explore the potential of durum wheat genotypes under salinity on the basis of physiological traits. Experiment was designed as RBD in three replications to evaluate 15 wheat genotypes with moderate saline irrigation (ECiw - 6 dS m-1) and extreme saline irrigation (ECiw - 10 dS m-1) along with one set of control (Best available water). Different physiological traits such as water potential (ψp), osmotic potential (ψs), relative water content (RWC), Na+ and K+ content were recorded in roots as well as shoots at the reproductive stage whereas photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content were measured in the flag leaves. A significant variability (p < 0.001) was noted among the genotypes under different stress environments and it was observed that durum genotype HI 8728 and HI 8737 showed less reduction in plant water traits (RWC, ψp and ψs) than the salinity tolerant checks of bread wheat KRL 99 and KRL 3-4. HD 4728 and HI 8708 maintained higher photosynthetic rate as well as higher chlorophyll content under the extreme salinity level of ECiw - 10 dSm-1. No significant differences were found in root Na+ in genotypes KRL 99 (3.17g), KRL 3-4 (3.34g) and HI 8737 (3.41g) while in shoots, lowest accumulation was seen in KRL 99, MACS 3949 and KRL 3-4 at ECiw - 10 dSm-1. The mean range of K+ content was 7.60-9.74% in roots and 4.21-6.61% in shoots under control environment which decreased to 50.77% in roots and 46.05% in shoots under extreme salinity condition of ECiw - 10 dSm-1. At ECiw - 10 dSm-1, KRL 99 maintained highest K+/Na+ in both root and shoot followed by KRL 3-4, HI 8737, MACS 3949, HD 4728 in roots and MACS 3949, KRL 3-4, MACS 4020, HD 4758, MACS 3972 and HI 8713 in shoots. The differential response of durum wheat genotypes under salinity particularly for physiological traits, confer their adaptability towards stress environments and exhibit their potential as genetic sources in breeding programs for improving salt stress tolerance.
RESUMO
In the current study, we investigated the impact of inoculation with a selected indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) complex on the growth and physiology of carob plants at increasing levels of watering (25, 50, 75 and 100% field capacity). The following growth and stress parameters were monitored in carob seedlings after 6 months of growth and 2 months of applied drought stress: fresh and dry weight, root and shoot lengths, leaf surface area, relative water content, stomatal conductance and membrane stability. Chlorophyll a and b, total soluble sugars, proline and protein contents were also determined along with the activities of stress enzymes: Catalase, Peroxidase and Superoxide dismutase. The obtained results indicate that inoculation with the indigenous AMF complex has a positive impact on the plant's growth as all the assessed parameters were significantly improved in the mycorrhizal plants. Additionally, our results show that mycorrhization contributes to the minimization of the impact of drought stress on the carob plants and allows a better adaptation to dry conditions.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the creation of a formal structure to measure and promote wellness among neurology residents would facilitate the development of interventions associated with measurable improvements. METHODS: In 2018 we founded the Resident Wellness Committee for the Department of Neurology at our institution. The Resident Wellness Committee was led by resident and staff neurologist co-chairs and had as its vision to promote well-being through initiatives centered in work-life integration, emotional and physical well-being, and social engagement. Web-based surveys assessing various aspects of well-being were administered at baseline and 1 year after launch, comprising the period June 21, 2018, through June 30, 2019. RESULTS: Response rates were high at baseline (21 of 34; 62%) and follow-up (25 of 33; 76%). Interventions pursued in the interim included education on handling unexpected absences, adjustments to holiday schedule policies, infrastructure for nutrition and respite, and a team-based department fitness challenge, among others. Overall, at both timepoints more than 80% (18 of 21; 21 of 25) of respondents endorsed at least mild burnout symptoms, although clinical workload, independence, and education were overwhelmingly viewed positively throughout. Notable improvements at follow-up included greater comfort with adjusting schedules at times of need, increased camaraderie within the program, and a smaller proportion of respondents endorsing substantial burnout symptoms. CONCLUSION: Through deliberate and sustained efforts backed by data, our work demonstrates that concrete changes can be successfully pursued to promote well-being among neurology residents. Given that Neurology has one of the highest burnout rates among medical specialties, our approach may serve as a model for other programs to replicate.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There are scarcity scientific reports on the response of medicinal plants to zinc nutrition, despite its remarkable role in growth, cell division, photosynthesis and tryptophan formation, which is involved auxin (IAA) synthesis. Therefore, further studies are required to understand the effects of zinc on one of these important plants, marigold plant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the promoting impacts of zinc-nutrition (0, 50, 75, 100 mg L-1) on marigold growth, plant height, branch number, herb and root fresh mass (FM), herb and root dry mass (DM), flowering attributes, inflorescence number/plant (IN), inflorescence diameter (ID), inflorescence (IW) weight (fresh and dry), days to first bud emergence, leaf relative water content (RWC) as well as some physiological responses, pigments, total carbohydrate, N, P, K, Zn contents of marigold plants. RESULTS: The results indicated that zinc-fertilizer at 100 mg L-1 was the superior treatment in improving the previous parameters relative to the other levels and control. Supplying Zn significantly enhanced growth parameters, flower attributes, RWC as well as nutrient contents of marigold leaves. Chlorophyll, carotenoids content and carbohydrates (%) were enhanced due to suppling Zn. Zn treatments raised the contents of N, P, K and Zn in leaves relative to unfertilized ones. A comparison of the usage treatments showed that the higher dose of Zn was better than the lower one or control but insignificant differences were observed between this treatment and the intermediate one (75 mg L-1) for some studies parameters. CONCLUSION: The obtained results suggest that exogenous application of Zn could be essentially for the nutrition program of marigold plants to provide plants by the optimum dose of Zn-fertilizer for improving the growth and, quantity and quality of inflorescence parameters.

Eragrostiella brachyphylla is an angiosperm desiccation-tolerant resurrection plant, which can survive during desiccation in the air-dry state and recover completely on availability of water. The present study was conducted to understand the vegetative desiccation tolerance of Eragrostiella brachyphylla by evaluating its ability to recover the physiological, biochemical and morphological functions post desiccation. In order to understand the responses of Eragrostiella brachyphylla to desiccation and subsequent rehydration experiments were conducted in the hydrated state (HS), desiccated state (DS) and rehydrated state (RS). Scanning electron microscopy revealed significant changes between the three stages in the internal ultra-structures of leaves and stems. Compared to the other states, photosynthetic parameters such as chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophylland total carotenoid contents decreased significantly in the desiccated state. Superoxide radical (O2â¢-) content also increased, resulting in an oxidative burst during desiccation. Consequently, antioxidant enzymes such as catalase (CAT) superoxide dismutase (SOD) peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were found to be significantly elevated in the desiccated state to avoid oxidative damage. Increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content and relative electrolyte leakage (REL) during desiccation provide evidence for membrane damage and loss of cell-wall integrity. During desiccation, the contents of osmolytes represented by sucrose and proline were found to increase to maintain cell structure integrity. After rehydration, all physiological, biochemical and morphological properties remain unchanged or slightly changed when compared to the hydrated state. Hence, we believe that these unique adaptations contribute to the remarkable desiccation-tolerance property of this plant.
RESUMO
Root-tissue colonizing bacteria demonstrated with multiple PGP traits from sorghum plants were identified as Ochrobactrum sp. EB-165, Microbacterium sp. EB-65, Enterobacter sp. EB-14 and Enterobacter cloacae strain EB-48 on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Here, the in vivo experiments using ½-MS media and ½-MS media + 15% PEG 8000 (for inducing drought stress) indicated stress tolerance imparting ability of these rhizobacterial endophytes in a non-stay green and senescent genotype (R-16) of sorghum. In the experiment with sterile soilrite mix base, seed bacterization with these isolates showed improved plant growth specifically the roots, in terms of root length (~ 44.2 to 50.8% over controls), root dry weight (~ 91.3 to 99.8% over controls) and root surface area (~ 1 to 1.5 fold over controls) under drought stress. Rhizobacterial endophytes were successful, not only in providing better cellular osmotic adjustment in leaves (≥ 1-fold increase in proline accumulation over controls), but favorable physiological responses like Relative Water Content (RWC) and cell Membrane Stability Index (MSI) in the inoculated plants during the drought stress induction. Up-regulation of drought responsive genes like sbP5CS2 and sbP5CS1 was observed in these endophytes-treated plants as compared to untreated control and Escherichia coli DH5α (negative control)-treated plants. Interestingly, the stress imparting traits of rhizobacterial endophytes, including up-regulation of specific genes, were observed during sorghum seedling growth only under drought stresses. The results of this study lead to the conclusion that the potential endophytic rhizobacterial interactions can contribute to plant growth promotion as well as induced stress tolerance in sorghum.
RESUMO
Plant growth is often affected with hampered physiological and cellular functioning due to salinity and drought stress. To assess the effectiveness of plant bioregulators (PBRs) in mitigating abiotic stresses, a double spilt plot field study was conducted with three replications at ICAR-CSSRI, research farm, Nain, Panipat. The study comprised of three deficit irrigation regimes viz., 100, 80 and 60% of crop evapo-transpiration (ETc) (I1, I2 and I3), four levels of irrigation water salinity i.e. 2, 4, 8, 12 dS m-1 (S0, S1, S2 and S3) and two PBRs salicylic acid (SA; G1) and thiourea (TU; G2). Irrigations, as per regimes and salinity, were applied at identified critical stages of wheat and if needed in pearl millet. PBRs were applied as seed priming and foliar sprays at two sensitive stages of respective crops. The trend of plant height, and physiological and biochemical traits was similar under different treatments at both stages, but differed significantly only at reproductive stage. Water deficit caused significant reduction in pearl millet (5.1%) and wheat (6.7%) grain yields. The reduction in grain yield under 8 and 12 dS m-1 was 12.90 and 22.43% in pearl millet and 7.68 and 32.93% in wheat, respectively compared to 2 dS m-1. Application of either SA (G1) or TU (G2) significantly enhanced plant height and grain yield, but magnitude of the increment was higher with SA in pearl millet and with TU in wheat. Application of SA and TU increased grain yield by 14.42 and 12.98 in pearl millet, and 12.90 and 17.36% in wheat, respectively. The plant height, RWC, TC, MI, LP, proline, Fv/Fm and Na/K ratio significantly reduced by salinity stress in pearl millet and both water and salinity stress in wheat. Application of both PBRs proved beneficial to mitigate adverse effect of water deficit and salt stress by significantly improving physiological traits, biochemical traits and ultimately grain yield in both crops.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Simmondsia chinensis (Link) Schneider grows as an important economic and medical plant in deserts. It suffers from salt stress during the first period of growth despite having to endure it after an advanced age. More than 30% of irrigated lands worldwide are destructively impacted by salt stress, which enormously influences the growth and productivity of several crops worldwide. Proline (Pro) aggregation has been correlated with salt tolerance. This treatise was conducted to evaluate the impact of Pro on the negative effects of salinity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experiment, sodium chloride (NaCl) (5 and 10 dS m-1) and Pro treatments (10 and 20 mM) were examined and then growth parameters, relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll and inorganic ion contents of jojoba plant were determined. RESULTS: Salt stress significantly minimized the growth parameters (i.e., plant height, branch number/plant, leaf number/plant and dry weight), RWC, chlorophyll and N+ and K+ contents, whereas Na+ and Cl- contents showed the opposite manner. CONCLUSION: Contrariwise, when Pro was applied at 10 and 20 mM, the adverse effects of salt stress on the previous parameters were mitigated; 20 mM Pro treatment showed superior effects compared with 10 mM treatment.
