RESUMO

VEGF was initially discovered due to its angiogenic activity and therefore named "vascular endothelial growth factor." However, its more recently discovered neurotrophic activity may be evolutionarily more ancient. Our previous work showed that all the changes produced by axotomy on the firing activity and synaptic inputs of abducens motoneurons were completely restored after VEGF administration. Therefore, we hypothesized that the lack of VEGF delivered by retrograde transport from the periphery should also affect the physiology of otherwise intact abducens motoneurons. For VEGF retrograde blockade, we chronically applied a neutralizing VEGF antibody to the lateral rectus muscle. Recordings of extracellular single-unit activity and eye movements were made in alert cats before and after the application of the neutralizing antibody. Our data revealed that intact, noninjured abducens motoneurons retrogradely deprived of VEGF exhibited noticeable changes in their firing pattern. There is a general decrease in firing rate and a significant reduction in eye position and eye velocity sensitivity (i.e., a decrease in the tonic and phasic components of their discharge, respectively). Moreover, by means of confocal immunocytochemistry, motoneurons under VEGF blockade showed a marked reduction in the density of afferent synaptic terminals contacting with their cell bodies. Altogether, the present findings demonstrate that the lack of retrogradely delivered VEGF renders abducens motoneurons into an axotomy-like state. This indicates that VEGF is an essential retrograde factor for motoneuronal synaptic drive and discharge activity.

RESUMO

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) are a promising energy storage technology, but challenges persist including electrolyte thickness and lithium (Li) dendrite puncture. A novel three-dimensional "peapod-like" composite solid electrolyte (CSEs) with low thickness (26.8 µm), high mechanical strength, and dendrite inhibition was designed. Incorporating Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) enhances both mechanical strength and ionic conductivity, stabilizing the CSE/Li interface and enabling Li symmetric batteries to stabilize for 3000 h. With structural advantages, the assembled LFP||Li and NCM811||Li cells exhibit excellent cycling performance. In addition, the constructed NCM811 pouch cell achieves a high gravimetric/volumetric energy density of 307.0 Wh kg-1/677.7 Wh L-1, which can light up LEDs under extreme conditions, demonstrating practicality and high safety. This work offers a generalized strategy for CSE design and insights into high-performance SSLMBs.

RESUMO

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a multifactorial autoimmune disease, can affect the brain and cause neuropsychiatric dysfunction, also named neuropsychiatric lupus (NPSLE). Microglial activation is observed in NPSLE patients. However, the mechanisms regulating microglia-mediated neurotoxicity in NPSLE remain elusive. Here, we showed that M1-like proinflammatory cytokine levels were increased in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of SLE patients, especially those with neuropsychiatric symptoms. We also demonstrated that MRL/lpr lupus mice developed anxiety-like behaviours and cognitive deficits in the early and active phases of lupus, respectively. An increase in microglial number was associated with upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines in the MRL/lpr mouse brain. RNA sequencing revealed that genes associated with phagocytosis and M1 polarization were upregulated in microglia from lupus mice. Functionally, activated microglia induced synaptic stripping in vivo and promoted neuronal death in vitro. Finally, tofacitinib ameliorated neuropsychiatric disorders in MRL/lpr mice, as evidenced by reductions in microglial number and synaptic/neuronal loss and alleviation of behavioural abnormalities. Thus, our results indicated that classically activated (M1) microglia play a crucial role in NPSLE pathogenesis. Minocycline and tofacitinib were found to alleviate NPSLE by inhibiting micrglial activation, providing a promising therapeutic strategy.

RESUMO

Auditory dysfunction and increased neuronal activity in the auditory pathways have been reported in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, but the cellular mechanisms involved are unknown. Here, we report that microglia play a role in the disinhibition of auditory pathways after status epilepticus in mice. We found that neuronal activity in the auditory pathways, including the primary auditory cortex and the medial geniculate body (MGB), was increased and auditory discrimination was impaired after status epilepticus. We further demonstrated that microglia reduced inhibitory synapses on MGB relay neurons over an 8-week period after status epilepticus, resulting in auditory pathway hyperactivity. In addition, we found that local removal of microglia from the MGB attenuated the increase in c-Fos+ relay neurons and improved auditory discrimination. These findings reveal that thalamic microglia are involved in auditory dysfunction in epilepsy.

RESUMO

Aqueous zinc metal batteries are a viable candidate for next-generation energy storage systems, but suffer from poor cycling efficiency of the Zn anode. Emerging approaches aim to regulate zinc plating behavior to suppress uncontrolled dendrites, while the stripping process is seldom considered. Herein, an oriented metal stripping strategy is demonstrated to stabilize the Zn anode by removing high-index facets for exposing the (002) plane through the addition of anionic additive sodium citrate (SC). Consequently, high-index facets that coordinate strongly with SC are preferentially stripped out due to a reduced stripping barrier, rendering stable (002) facet preponderant in epitaxial plating. After repeat stripping/plating, the ultra-high proportion of 93% for (002) and large-size grains of ≈100 µm (six times larger than before) can be obtained. Zn anode shows continuous 25 000 cycles with low overpotential at 100 mA cm-2 in symmetric cells and more than 70 h of stable operation even at an ultra-high depth of discharge of 92.3%. Moreover, an extremely long lifespan of 12 000 cycles at 10 A g-1 with a high capacity retention of 89% is achieved by the assembled Zn//I2 battery. This work provides a distinctive approach to improving the stripping process to design highly efficient zinc anodes for promising aqueous zinc metal batteries.

RESUMO

Vapor-based deposition techniques are emerging approaches for the design of carbon-supported metal powder electrocatalysts with tailored catalyst entities, sizes, and dispersions. Herein, a pulsed CVD (Pt-pCVD) approach is employed to deposit different Pt entities on mesoporous N-doped carbon (MPNC) nanospheres to design high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. The influence of consecutive precursor pulse number (50-250) and deposition temperature (225-300 °C) are investigated. The Pt-pCVD process results in highly dispersed ultrasmall Pt clusters (≈1 nm in size) and Pt single atoms, while under certain conditions few larger Pt nanoparticles are formed. The best MPNC-Pt-pCVD electrocatalyst prepared in this work (250 pulses, 250 °C) reveals a Pt HER mass activity of 22.2 ± 1.2 A mg-1 Pt at -50 mV versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), thereby outperforming a commercially available Pt/C electrocatalyst by 40% as a result of the increased Pt utilization. Remarkably, after optimization of the Pt electrode loading, an ultrahigh Pt mass activity of 56 ± 2 A mg-1 Pt at -50 mV versus RHE is found, which is among the highest Pt mass activities of Pt single atom and cluster-based electrocatalysts reported so far.

RESUMO

A method for the voltammetric determination of tin using a multiwall carbon nanotubes/spherical glassy carbon (CNTs/SGC) electrode is described. The new procedure is based on the adsorptive accumulation of the Sn(II)-cupferron complex on a CNTs/SGC electrode modified with a lead film, followed by electrochemical reduction of the adsorbed species. The optimal experimental conditions include the use of 0.10 mol L-1 acetate buffer (pH 5.7), 4.0×10-4 M cupferron and 1.0×10-4 M Pb(II). The peak current is proportional to the concentration of Sn(II) over the range of 1.0×10-9 -1.0×10-7 M and the detection limit is 3.1×10-10 M for a 95 s accumulation time. The proposed method was used to determine tin in real samples and certified reference materials.

RESUMO

RESEARCH QUESTION: Can rat endometrium be successfully procured and transplanted, and can a similar method be used to procure human endometrium? DESIGN: Rat endometrium was procured using an endometrium stripping method and transplanted into female Sprague-Dawley rats. Macroscopic and histological changes, endometrial receptivity-related protein concentrations and fertility were assessed. Additionally, a preliminary experiment was conducted to procure human endometrium using a similar method. RESULTS: Endometrium was successfully procured from both rats and humans, which contained intact endometrium and parts of the adjacent inner annulus myometrium. Endometrium auto-transplantation was conducted in rats and the procedure lasted a total of 41.3 ± 5.7 min with a mean blood loss of 0.09 ± 0.04 g. The transplanted endometrium survived well, but a fibrotic zone formed between the transplant and recipient tissue. Compared with sham rats, those with endometrium transplantation had similar endometrial thickness and endometrial gland numbers but reduced vascular density at 8 weeks after surgery. Endometrium transplantation also retained expression of the endometrial receptivity-related proteins leukaemia inhibitory factor and vascular endothelial growth factor. In contrast to non-pregnancy in the stripped horn, a mean of 5.0 ± 2.7 fetuses developed in the transplanted horn, and full-term live fetuses were conceived in the horns with transplanted endometrium. CONCLUSIONS: Endometrium procurement by stripping method can obtain an intact and functional endometrium, and endometrium transplantation can reconstruct the uterine cavity and restore fertility in rats.

RESUMO

This review assessed the efficacy and safety of pharmacologic agents (prostaglandins, oxytocin, mifepristone, hyaluronidase, and nitric oxide donors) and mechanical methods (single- and double-balloon catheters, laminaria, membrane stripping, and amniotomy) and those generally considered under the rubric of complementary medicine (castor oil, nipple stimulation, sexual intercourse, herbal medicine, and acupuncture). A substantial body of published reports, including 2 large network meta-analyses, support the safety and efficacy of misoprostol (PGE1) when used for cervical ripening and labor induction. Misoprostol administered vaginally at doses of 50 µg has the highest probability of achieving vaginal delivery within 24 hours. Regardless of dosing, route, and schedule of administration, when used for cervical ripening and labor induction, prostaglandin E2 seems to have similar efficacy in decreasing cesarean delivery rates. Globally, although oxytocin represents the most widely used pharmacologic agent for labor induction, its effectiveness is highly dependent on parity and cervical status. Oxytocin is more effective than expectant management in inducing labor, and the efficacy of oxytocin is enhanced when combined with amniotomy. However, prostaglandins administered vaginally or intracervically are more effective in inducing labor than oxytocin. A single 200-mg oral tablet of mifepristone seems to represent the lowest effective dose for cervical ripening. The bulk of the literature assessing relaxin suggests this agent has limited benefit when used for this indication. Although intracervical injection of hyaluronidase may cause cervical ripening, the need for intracervical administration has limited the use of this agent. Concerning the vaginal administration of nitric oxide donors, including isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide, nitroglycerin, and sodium nitroprusside, the higher incidence of side effects with these agents has limited their use. A synthetic hygroscopic cervical dilator has been found to be effective for preinduction cervical ripening. Although a pharmacologic agent may be administered after the use of the synthetic hygroscopic dilator, in an attempt to reduce the interval to vaginal delivery, concomitant use of mechanical and pharmacologic methods is being explored. Combining the use of a single-balloon catheter with dinoprostone, misoprostol, or oxytocin enhances the efficacy of these pharmacologic agents in cervical ripening and labor induction. The efficacy of single- and double-balloon catheters in cervical ripening and labor induction seems similar. To date, the combination of misoprostol with an intracervical catheter seems to be the best approach when balancing delivery times with safety. Although complementary methods are occasionally used by patients, given the lack of data documenting their efficacy and safety, these methods are rarely used in hospital settings.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Superficial venous incompetence (SVI) is a common disease that causes significant quality of life (QoL) impairment. There is a need for more health economic evaluations of SVI treatment. The aim of this study was to perform a cost effectiveness analysis in patients with great saphenous vein (GSV) incompetence comparing radiofrequency ablation (RFA), high ligation and stripping (HL/S), and no treatment or conservative treatment with one year follow up. METHODS: Randomised controlled trial economic analysis from an ongoing trial; 143 patients (156 limbs) with GSV incompetence (CEAP clinical class 2 - 6) were included. Treatment was performed with RFA or HL/S. Follow up was performed up to one year using duplex ultrasound, revised venous clinical severity score (r-VCSS), Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire (AVVQ), and EuroQol-5D-3L (EQ-5D-3L). RESULTS: Seventy-eight limbs were treated with RFA and HL/S respectively. No treatment or conservative treatment was assumed to have zero in treatment cost and no treatment benefit. In the RFA group, one limb had reflux in the GSV after one month and three limbs after one year. In HL/S, two limbs had remaining reflux in the treated area at one month and one year. Both disease severity (r-VCSS, p = .004) and QoL (AVVQ, p = .021 and EQ-5D-3L, p = .028) were significantly improved over time. The QALY gain was 0.21 for RFA and 0.17 for HL/S. The cost per patient was calculated as €1 292 for RFA and €2 303 for HL/S. The cost per QALY (compared with no treatment or conservative treatment) was €6 155 for RFA and €13 549 for HL/S. With added cost for days absent from work the cost per QALY was €7 358 for RFA and €24 197 for HL/S. The cost per QALY for both methods was well below the threshold suggested by Swedish National Board of Health. CONCLUSION: RFA is more cost effective than HL/S and no treatment or conservative treatment at one year follow up.

RESUMO

In this study, characteristics of oxidation debris (OD) and its stripping mechanism from graphene oxide (GO) were explored. The results demonstrated that OD contains three components, namely, protein-, fulvic acid-, and humic acid-like substances; among these, protein-like substances with lower molecular weight and higher hydrophilicity were most liable to be stripped from GO and were the primary components stripped from GO at pH < 10, whereas humic acid- and fulvic acid-like substances were stripped from GO at pH > 10. During the stripping of OD, hydrogen bonds from carboxyl and carbonyl were the first to break, followed by hydrogen bonds from epoxy. Subsequently, π-π interactions were broken, and hydrogen bond interactions induced by hydroxyl groups were the hardest to break. After the stripping of OD, the recombination of OD on GO was observed, and regions containing relatively fewer oxygen-containing functional groups were favorable binding sites for the readsorbed OD. The stripping and recombination of OD on GO resulted in an uneven GO surface, which should be considered during the development of GO-based environmental materials and the evaluation of their environmental behavior.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Endothelial keratoplasty (EK) is the conventional treatment to improve visual acuity of corneal endothelium decompensation (CED) patients, with other therapies mainly for symptomatic relief. However, the shortage of corneal grafts and other limitations to EK urge the development of novel alternative treatments. In the last decade, novel options have been proposed, yet only a limited number of reviews have systematically reported on outcomes. Therefore, this systematic review evaluates the existing clinical evidence of novel surgical approaches for CED. METHOD: We identified 24 studies that illustrated the clinical observations of the surgical approaches in interest. We included Descemet stripping only (DSO), Descemet membrane transplantation (DMT) where Descement membrane alone instead of corneal endothelium with cells is transplanted, and cell-based therapy. RESULTS: In general, these therapies may provide visual outcomes comparable with EK under specific conditions. DSO and DMT target CED with relatively healthy peripheral corneal endothelium like Fuchs' corneal endothelial dystrophy, while cell-based therapy offers more versatile applications. Side effects of DSO would decrease with modifications to surgical techniques. Moreover, Rho-associated protein kinase inhibitor adjuvant therapy could enhance clinical results in DSO and cell-based therapy. CONCLUSION: Long-term controlled clinical trials with larger sample size on the therapies are needed. The simplicity of DSO and the high translational potential of cell-based therapy to treat CED of most etiologies made these two treatment strategies promising.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The stratum corneum (SC), the outermost layer of the skin epidermis, acts as an effective bi-directional barrier, preventing water loss (inside-outside barrier) and entry of foreign substances (outside-inside barrier). Although transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is a widely-used measure of barrier function, it represents only inside-outside protection. Therefore, we aimed to establish a non-invasive method for quantitative evaluation of the outside-inside barrier function and visually present a skin barrier model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Skin barrier damage was induced by applying a closed patch of 1% sodium dodecyl sulfate to the forearms of eight participants; they were instructed to apply a barrier cream on a designated damaged area twice daily for 5 days. The SC barrier was evaluated by measuring TEWL and fluorescein sodium salt penetration rate before, immediately after, and 5 days after damage. The penetration rate was assessed using tape-stripping (TS) technique and fluorescence microscopy. RESULTS: The rates of fluorescein sodium salt penetration into the lower layers of SC differed significantly based on the degree of skin barrier damage. The correlation between penetration rate and TEWL was weak after two rounds of TS and became stronger after subsequent rounds. Five days after skin barrier damage, the penetration rate of all layers differed significantly between areas with and without the barrier cream application. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrated that the penetration rate was dependent on skin barrier conditions. The penetration rate and corresponding fluorescence images are suitable quantitative indicators that can visually represent skin barrier conditions.

RESUMO

Cow-calf contact (CCC) rearing is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to the common practice of early separation of cow and calf in dairy management. Milkability can be impaired in nursing cows, which contributes to the loss of machine milk yield caused by calf intake, especially in pure dam-calf contact (DCC) systems. The aims of this study were (1) to describe the current status quo of DCC rearing regarding management and milking and (2) to evaluate the effects of DCC (suckling and milking vs. milking alone) and the effects of different types of DCC on milkabilty parameters, teat condition and behavior during milking on Swiss DCC farms. By means of 17 telephone interviews with DCC farmers, we collected data on DCC management, housing, separation and weaning processes, milking procedures and techniques, and perceived milkability problems. Subsequently, we collected data on 10 of the interviewed DCC farms (183 cows): 4 DCC farms with a whole-day contact (WDC) system, 3 farms with DCC before milking (CBM), and 3 farms with DCC after milking (CAM). Five farms on which calves had no contact with dams were chosen as reference farms (178 cows). Using a milk flow meter, the occurrence of ejection disorders, bimodality of the milk flow curve, machine milk yield, the duration of the decline phase, and the duration of prestimulation were measured. The average mouthpiece chamber vacuum during the main milking phase and hind leg activity during milking were measured using a pressure sensor and an accelerometer, respectively. After cluster removal, the teat condition was evaluated, and a stripping milk sample was taken for fat content analysis. The interview results revealed that 8 of the 17 farms surveyed had a WDC system, and 2 farms operated a daytime DCC system. Contact before milking was applied by 3 farms, and 3 farms allowed CAM. On one farm, calves had access to dams 3 times a day. A great diversity in cow-calf management was found. In the on-farm data-collection, 20 milkings of a total of 701 milkings examined met the criteria for a clear ejection disorder, with 17 of these observations occurring on WDC farms and none on reference farms. The stripping milk fat content was lower in nursing cows, indicating a lower degree of udder emptying. Machine milk yield during the main milking phase was higher in nursing CAM cows than in nursing WDC and CBM cows. Farm types did not differ regarding teat condition, hind leg activity, or the occurrence of bimodal milk flow curves. In conclusion, the large variation in individual management approaches to DCC rearing even within DCC types, such as calf housing or cow breeds, implies caution when interpreting results. Contact after milking may be the system most beneficial for some productivity parameters, but adequate calf supply must be ensured. Higher amounts of milk remaining in the udder after cluster removal indicate that nursing can affect milkability, but future research should consider the effects of udder filling before milking to better interpret the fat content of stripping milk.

RESUMO

A selective and reliable modified glassy carbon sensor, based on a 1.0% Cd zeolitic imidazole framework-67 modified glassy carbon sensor (GCS2), has been developed for ultrasensitive detection of dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP) in human biological fluid. The synthesis of porous nanoparticles of Cd zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (Cd ZIF-67) was carried out via the hydrothermal method. The resulting Cd ZIF-67 powder emerges with good crystallinity, a rhombic dodecahedral morphology with particle size in the range 300 ~ 500 nm, and a specific surface area of 1780 m2·g-1. Furthermore, the fabricated sensor exhibited superior performance in the detection of DMMP with two linearity ranges of 0.02-2.0 nM and 2.0-9.0 nM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.06 pM. The fabricated sensor exhibited good reliability, long-term stability, and repeatability, which are favourable attributes for electroanalytical detection. In addition, the fabricated sensor displayed superior performance without significant interference during the assay of DMMP in a biological fluid (human serum sample) within two linearity ranges of 0.1-1.0 nM and 1.0-6.0 nM and a LOD of 0.03 nM.

RESUMO

A novel electrochemical sensor was developed for the detection of lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) ions using spent coffee grounds decorated with iron oxide particles (FeO/SCG). The FeO-decorated SCG was used to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). FeO, SCG, and FeO/SCG were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The electrochemical properties of the modified electrode were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electrode modifications increased the active surface area and electron transfer and enhanced the accumulation of the target analyte. In the optimal condition, the developed sensor showed linear ranges of 1.0 µg L-1-0.05 mg L-1 and 0.05 mg L-1-0.8 mg L-1 for Pb2+ and 5.0 µg L-1-0.1 mg L-1 and 0.1 mg L-1-0.8 mg L-1 for Cu2+. The limit of detection (LOD) was 1.0 µg L-1 for Pb2+ and 2.4 µg L-1 for Cu2+. The developed sensor was successfully applied to determine Pb2+ and Cu2+ in bullet holes. The results were in good agreement with those obtained by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES).

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To comparatively assess 3 interproximal reduction (IPR) methods used in clear aligner treatment with regard to accuracy, and patient perception of discomfort and anxiety. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 42 patients, treated with the Invisalign® system, were included in this prospective trial and received one of the following IPR methods: hand-operated abrasive strips (group 1; 14 patients, 150 teeth), motor-driven 3/4 oscillating segmental discs (group 2; 14 patients, 134 teeth), or motor-driven abrasive strips (group 3; 14 patients, 133 teeth). Accuracy was evaluated using the difference between planned and executed IPR. Anxiety and discomfort levels experienced by the patients were evaluated using a questionnaire of 17 questions. RESULTS: The accuracy of IPR was high in groups 2 and 3; however, it was low in group 1 with the executed IPR significantly less than the planned amount. On quadrant-level, executed IPR was significantly less in the upper left quadrant in group 1, and significantly more in the upper right quadrant in group 2. The difference between planned IPR and executed IPR was significant for teeth 11, 21, 32, 33, and 43 in group 1, indicating deficiency. The average difference between planned IPR and executed IPR was 0.08 mm for group 1, 0.09 mm for group 2, and 0.1 mm for group 3. Anxiety and discomfort levels did not differ between the methods, but a negative correlation was observed between age and discomfort and anxiety levels. CONCLUSIONS: The overall accuracy of the 2 motor-driven IPR methods was found to be better than the hand-operated system. Maxillary central incisors and mandibular canines were more prone to IPR deficiency when hand-operated abrasive strips were utilized. Patients were similarly comfortable with all 3 methods, and discomfort and anxiety levels decreased with age. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Motor-driven methods have proven to be more effective when compared to the hand-operated ones by means of precision, speed, and patient comfort. If the clinician favors a hand-operated method, it may be advised to perform slightly more IPR especially on mandibular canines and maxillary central incisors.

RESUMO

This article presents a new working electrode based on a bismuth-plated, gold-based microelectrode array, which is suitable for determining thallium(I) species using anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). It allowed a significant increase in the sensitivity as compared to other voltammetric sensors. The main experimental conditions and the instrumental parameters were optimized. A very good proportionality between the Tl(I) peak current and its concentration was evidenced in the range from 5 × 10-10 up to 5 × 10-7 mol L-1 (R = 0.9989) for 120 s of deposition and from 2 × 10-10 up to 2 × 10-7 mol L-1 (R = 0.9988) for 180 s. A limit of detection (LOD) of 8 × 10-11 mol L-1 for a deposition time of 180 s was calculated. The effects of interfering ions on the Tl(I) analytical signal were studied. The proposed method was applied for quantitative Tl(I) detection in water certified reference material TM 25.5 as well as in spiked real water samples, for which satisfactory recovery values between 98.7 and 101.8% were determined.

RESUMO

Aluminum (Al) metal is an attractive anode material for next-generation rechargeable batteries, because of its low cost and high capacities. However, it brings some fundamental issues such as dendrites, low Coulombic efficiency (CE), and low utilization. Here, we propose a strategy for constructing an ultrathin aluminophilic interface layer (AIL) to regulate the Al nucleation and growth behaviors, which enables highly reversible and dendrite-free Al plating/stripping under high areal capacity. Metallic Al can maintain stable plating/stripping on the Pt-AIL@Ti for over 2000 h at 10 mAh cm-2 with an average CE of 99.9%. The Pt-AIL also enables reversible Al plating/stripping at a record high areal capacity of 50 mAh cm-2, which is 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than the previous studies. This work provides a valuable direction for further construction of high-performance rechargeable Al metal batteries.

RESUMO

Anode-free all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASLMBs) promise high energy density and safety but suffer from a low initial Coulombic efficiency and rapid capacity decay, especially at high cathode loadings. Using operando techniques, we concluded these issues were related to interfacial contact loss during lithium stripping. To address this, we introduce a conductive carbon felt elastic layer that self-adjusts the pressure at the anode side, ensuring consistent lithium-solid electrolyte contact. This layer simultaneously provides electronic conduction and releases the plating pressure. Consequently, the first Coulombic efficiency dramatically increases from 58.4% to 83.7% along with a >10-fold improvement in cycling stability. Overall, this study reveals an approach for enhancing anode-free ASLMB performance and longevity by mitigating lithium stripping inefficiency through self-adjusting interfacial pressure enabled by a conductive elastic interlayer.
