RESUMO

Spodoptera frugiperda is a migratory agricultural pest with fast-spreading speed, long migration distance, and wide host range, which seriously threatens the safety of economic crops. To predict the trends of S. frugiperda and its parasitoid wasp Trichogramma pretiosum in their habitats under current and future climatic conditions, based on MaxEnt model and geographic distribution data of their historical occurrence, we project the feasibility of introducing T. pretiosum to control S. frugiperda by evaluating on their potential global distribution. The results show that, under the current greenhouse gas concentration, the potential distribution area of S. frugiperda is concentrated in 50° N-30° S, with a total area of 1.74 × 106 km2 , and the potential distribution area of T. pretiosum in the whole world is 2.91 × 106 km2 . The suitable areas of T. pretiosum cover almost all the suitable areas of S. frugiperda, which indicates that T. pretiosum can be introduced to control S. frugiperda. The results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for the monitoring and early warning of S. frugiperda and the use of T. pretiosum to control S. frugiperda.

Wolbachia has been shown to induce thelytokous parthenogenesis in Trichogramma species, which have been widely used as biological control agents around the world. Little is known about the changes of bacterial community after restoring arrhenotokous or bisexual reproduction in the T. pretiosum. Here, we investigate the emergence of males of T. pretiosum through curing experiments (antibiotics and high temperature), crossing experiments, and high-throughput 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing (rRNA-seq). The results of curing experiments showed that both antibiotics and high temperatures could cause the thelytokous T. pretiosum to produce male offspring. Wolbachia was dominant in the thelytokous T. pretiosum bacterial community with 99.01% relative abundance. With the relative abundance of Wolbachia being depleted by antibiotics, the diversity and relative content of other endosymbiotic bacteria increased, and the reproductive mode reverted from thelytoky to arrhenotoky in T. pretiosum. Although antibiotics did not eliminate Wolbachia in T. pretiosum, sulfadiazine showed an advantage in restoring entirely arrhenotokous and successive bisexual reproduction. This study was the first to demonstrate the bacterial communities in parthenogenetic Trichogramma before and after antibiotics or high-temperature treatment. Our findings supported the hypothesis that Wolbachia titer-dependence drives a reproduction switch in T. pretiosum between thelytoky and arrhenotoky.

This autobiography documents the life and accomplishments of Li Liying. Born into a poor family in China, she eventually became director of Guangdong Entomological Institute. After graduating middle school (1949), she was admitted to the Agronomy Faculty at Beijing Agricultural University but was shortly after redirected by the Chinese Government to Timiryazev Agricultural Academy, Moscow, Russia. The last year of her study at Timiryazev Agricultural Academy was a pivotal experience. She had the opportunity to conduct fieldwork on cotton pest control and became aware of the harmful practice of aerially spraying highly toxic organophosphates with workers present. She decided to dedicate herself to finding safer alternatives and became a leader in the development of mass-rearing techniques for insects beneficial to agriculture. She traveled to laboratories in several foreign countries to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas among colleagues. She is recognized for her service to entomological societies, teaching at universities, and love of entomology.

Potato, a cool-weather crop, emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which attract the specialist herbivore, Phthorimaea operculella, but also this herbivore's parasitic wasp, Trichogramma chilonis, an important biocontrol agent. What happens to this trophic system when heat stress challenges this agro-ecosystem? We studied how high temperature (HT) pre-treatments influence potato's VOC emissions and their subsequent effects on the preferences of insects, as evaluated in oviposition assays and Y-tube olfactometers. HT pre-stressed plants were less attractive to P. operculella adult moths, which were repelled by HT VOCs, but increased the recruitment of the parasitoid, T. chilonis, which were attracted. VOC emissions, including the most abundant constituent, ß-caryophyllene, were enhanced by HT treatments; some constituents elicited stronger behavioural responses than others. Transcripts of many genes in the biosynthetic pathways of these VOCs were significantly enhanced by HT treatment, suggesting increases in de novo biosynthesis. HT increased the plant's stomatal apertures, and exogenous applications of the hormone, ABA, known to suppress stomatal apertures, reduced leaf volatile emissions and affected the HT-altered plant attractions to both insects. From these results, we infer that HT stress affects this plant-insect interaction through its influence on VOC emissions, potentially decreasing herbivore ovipositions while increasing ovipositions of the parasitoid.

Chemical pesticides are largely applied worldwide for the control of agricultural pests, and often cause lethal and sublethal side effects on natural enemies. To determine the compatibility of chemical pesticides, commonly used by maize growers, with Trichogramma ostriniae, the toxicities of four herbicides (pendimethalin, topramezone, glyphosate, and atrazine), three insecticides (imidacloprid, emamectin benzoate, and ethiofencarb), and three fungicides (propiconazole, benzoyl cyclazole, and difenoconazole) were tested under laboratory conditions, measuring residual toxicity to T. ostriniae adults, their lethal effects on the parasitoid's eggs inside the host egg, and on the reproduction of the parasitoid's female offspring. Three tested pesticides including ethiofencarb, glyphosate, and benzoyl cyclazole were slightly harmful to T. ostriniae adults, whereas the other seven pesticides were moderately harmful. The pesticide residues of ethiofencarb, and emamectin benzoate, showed slightly persistence of toxicity to T. ostriniae adults, in contrast to the remaining pesticides. Glyphosate, emamectin benzoate, imidacloprid, ethiofencarb, and propiconazole were classified as harmless, causing < 30% reduction in emergence rate of wasps from host eggs, while atrazine, pendimethalin, topramezone, benzoyl cyclazole, and difenoconazole were classified as slightly harmful, causing 31-52% reduction in parasitoid emergence rates. Furthermore, the number of eggs subsequently laid by T. ostriniae females that had emerged from parasitized host eggs treated with atrazine was significantly reduced compared to which of untreated parasitized host eggs. No negative effects were observed with atrazine treatment on the emergence rates of F1 wasps, their wing deformity rates and sex ratios. The data presented here indicate that the safety interval between pesticide applications and releases of T. ostriniae wasps is 2-3 weeks, which provide valuable information in designing a sound maize integrated pest management program that combines chemical pesticide applications with augmentative releases of T. ostriniae wasps.

DNase is a powerful tool for a series of molecular biology applications. Developing a strategy for large-scale production of DNase with high purity and activity is critical for scientific research. In this study, a previously uncharacterized gene with nuclease activity was found in Trichogramma pretiosum genome. Pichia pastoris GS115 was preferred as the host to overcome the issues related to prokaryotic expression. Under the optimal conditions, the activity of T. pretiosum DNase (Tp-DNase) reached 1940 U/mL of culture supernatant in fed-batch fermentation. Using ion-exchange chromatography and adsorption chromatography, Tp-DNase was produced with a purity of >99% and molecular weight of 45 kDa. In vitro DNA degradation experiments showed that Tp-DNase could effectively degrade dsDNA, and its activity was slightly higher than that of bovine pancreas DNase I under the same conditions. Moreover, Tp-DNase can be used to eliminate nucleic acid contamination and improve the accuracy of nucleic acid detection.

Upon encountering a host, a female parasitoid wasp has to decide whether to learn positive or negative cues related to the host. The optimal female decision will depend on the fitness costs and benefits of learned stimuli. Reward quality is positively related to the rate of behavioral acquisition in processes such as associative learning. Wolbachia, an endosymbiotic bacterium, often plays an impressive role in the manipulation of its arthropod host's biology. Here, we studied the responses of two natural Wolbachia infected/uninfected Trichogramma brassicae wasp populations to theoretically high- and low-reward values during a conditioning process and the consequences of their responses in terms of memory duration. According to our results, uninfected wasps showed an attraction response to high-value rewards, but showed aversive learning in response to low-value rewards. The memory span of uninfected wasps after conditioning by low-value rewards was significantly shorter than that for high-value rewards. As our results revealed, responses to high-quality hosts will bring more benefits (bigger size, increased fecundity and enhanced survival) than those to low-quality hosts for uninfected wasps. Infected wasps were attracted to conditioned stimuli with the same memory duration after conditioning by both types of hosts. This was linked to the fact that parasitoids emerging from both types of hosts present the same life-history traits. Therefore, these hosts represent the same quality reward for infected wasps. According to the obtained results, it can be concluded that Wolbachia manipulates the learning ability of its host, resulting in the wasp responding to all reward values similarly.

Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) is considered as a major pest of tomato worldwide that causes significant losses in the crop production. This study aimed to evaluate integration of two effective and environmentally safe methods (host plant resistant and biological control) for sustainable management of the pest under greenhouse conditions. The experiment was conducted based on the factorial design with ten replicates under greenhouse conditions (22 ± 3°C, 50 ± 10 RH and 14 L:10 D photoperiod). Infestation to T. absoluta was conducted at the first-flowering stage of the plants by introducing a pair of newly emerged adults (one female and one male) per plant. Ten days later, the biological agent, Trichogramma brassicae, was released on the treatments by hanging a card contained 50 parasitized eggs in each replicate. Observation was performed weekly on ratio of infested leaves per plant (%), number of larvae/plant, number of mines/leaf and ratio of infested fruits/plant (%). Results indicated that the susceptible variety alone (Izmir) supported the highest ratio of infested leaves (42.92 ± 1.95%), number of larvae/plant (12.86 ± 0.71), number of mines/leaf (1.29 ± 0.07) and infested fruits/plant (18.8 ± 1.10%), whereas the lowest (6.12 ± 0.42%, 1.85 ± 0.13, 0.18 ± 0.02 and 0.12 ± 0.06%, respectively) were observed in combined resistant variety (Cherry) and parasitoid released treatment. Integration of these methods not only decreases damage caused on tomato leaflets and fruits, but also reduces insecticide applications which are adversely impact human health and environment.

The egg parasitoid, Trichogramma chilonis, has significant control effects on agriculture and forestry pests and is widely employed in southern China for the biological control of lepidopteran pests. In this study, transcriptomic analysis was used to gain a clear understanding of the molecular changes in prepupae and pupae of T. chilonis. A total of 16.88 Gb of clean data were obtained and finally assembled into 43,136 unigenes, 18,880 of which were annotated. After FPKM standardization, 117 and 838 specific expression genes were found in prepupae and pupae, respectively. There were 3129 differentially expressed genes between prepupae and pupae. Compared to pupae, 806 genes were up-regulated and 2323 were down-regulated in prepupae. Background on the T. chilonis transcriptome, the enriched GO function and KEGG pathway analysis of DEGs were considered. As indicated by GO classification, up-regulated genes were mainly involved in chitin metabolism, cell adhesion and endocytic, while most down-regulated genes were involved in synthesis of cell components, ion transport and biological regulation. KEGG enrichment analysis showed that 458 DEGs were enriched in 94 metabolic pathways. DEGs involved in nucleotide replication and transcription, substance metabolism, insect hormone biosynthesis, cell growth and death, reproductive metabolism, circadian rhythms and signal transduction pathways were up-regulated or down-regulated to different degrees, indicating that these genes played important roles during the process of metamorphosis in T. chilonis. This study provides a rich data source for the future study of T. chilonis molecular and biological mechanisms. A large number of genes related to metamorphosis were found based on comparison analysis between prepupae and pupae transcriptomes. This study lays a good foundation for in-depth study of gene transcription and regulation mechanisms during T. chilonis metamorphosis.

BACKGROUND: The parasitoid wasp, Trichogramma dendrolimi, can enter diapause at the prepupal stage. Thus, diapause is an efficient preservation method during the mass production of T. dendrolimi. Previous studies on diapause have mainly focused on ecological characteristics, so the molecular basis of diapause in T. dendrolimi is unknown. We compared transcriptomes of diapause and non-diapause T. dendrolimi to identify key genes and pathways involved in diapause development. RESULTS: Transcriptome sequencing was performed on diapause prepupae, pupae after diapause, non-diapause prepupae, and pupae. Analysis yielded a total of 87,022 transcripts with an average length of 1604 bp. By removing redundant sequences and those without significant BLAST hits, a non-redundant dataset was generated, containing 7593 sequences with an average length of 3351 bp. Among them, 5702 genes were differentially expressed. The result of Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis revealed that regulation of transcription, DNA-templated, oxidation-reduction process, and signal transduction were significantly affected. Ten genes were selected for validation using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The changes showed the same trend as between the qPCR and RNA-Seq results. Several genes were identified as involved in diapause, including ribosomal proteins, zinc finger proteins, homeobox proteins, forkhead box proteins, UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, Glutathione-S-transferase, p53, and DNA damage-regulated gene 1 (pdrg1). Genes related to lipid metabolism were also included. CONCLUSIONS: We generated a large amount of transcriptome data from T. dendrolimi, providing a resource for future gene function research. The diapause-related genes identified help reveal the molecular mechanisms of diapause, in T. dendrolimi, and other insect species.

The Chinese oak silkworm, Antheraea pernyi, is an important alternate host for mass production of Trichogramma parasitoids, which play a vital role in the biological control of lepidopterous pests in China. The quality of A. pernyi eggs is particularly important for mass production of these parasitoids. In this study, a pathogenic bacterium, isolated and purified from A. pernyi eggs that had turned gray in color, was identified as Serratia marcescens. We used morphology, biochemistry and 16S rDNA analysis to characterize the strain, which was named "APE strain". Serratia marcescens APE strain was determined to be the causal bacterium associated with the disease in the eggs, verified by a test based on Koch's Postulates. We tested the pathogenicity of S. marcescens APE strain on A. pernyi eggs; the percentage of diseased (gray) eggs reached 57.78% when uninfected eggs were exposed to a concentration of 1 × 109 cfu/mL bacterial suspension for 7 h. S. marcescens was transmitted mechanically by Trichogramma parasitoids. The transmission rate was 25.56%. In a horizontal transmission test, the highest percentage of uninfected eggs that developed infections was 51.43% after being treated with contents of diseased eggs for 12 h. In a vertical transmission test, the number of infected eggs per treated adult female was 63.8-92.3 after treatment with different S. marcescens concentrations, significantly lower than the 304.3 eggs per female in the control group. Furthermore, the percentage of infected (gray) eggs produced by adult moths exposed to bacteria in the larval stage was 80.5-85.3%.

Tomato leaf miner (TLM), Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most destructive tomato pests worldwide. We tested quantity and quality of tomato fruits after simultaneous use of two biological control agents, the predatory mirid bug Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) and the egg parasitoid Trichogramma brassicae Bezdenko against TLM. We varied the timing of predator releases (before or after pest establishment) and the number of parasitoids released (ten or 30 females per week per m2). The highest number of fruits per cage, percentage of undamaged fruits, total yield weight, and undamaged yield weight were all obtained with predator-in-first treatments, with or without parasitoid releases. Furthermore, measures of fruit quality were also highest in predator-in-first treatments, including, highest percentage of water, greatest proportional fresh weight of carbohydrates, most lycopene, most ß-carotene, most flavonoids, and highest total chlorophyll. Thus, our findings support a predator-in-first augmentation approach for management of TLM.

Compatibility of neonicotinoid insecticides with the natural enemies has been concerned for decades. This study aims to evaluate and compare the acute and sublethal toxicity effects of neonicotinoid insecticides on three species of Trichogramma parasitoid wasps (i.e. Trichogramma dendrolimi, T. ostriniae and T. confusum) with broad distribution and great relevance to integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. A residual contact bioassay demonstrated that nitenpyram had the greatest intrinsic toxicity to T. dendrolimi and T. ostriniae with LC50 values of 0.060 (0.056-0.065) and 0.066 (0.050-0.087) mg a.i. L-1, respectively. But for T. confusum, the most toxic neonicotinoid insecticide is dinotefuran with a LC50 value of 0.065 (0.055-0.078) mg a.i. L-1. Furthermore, based on the risk quotient estimation, acetamiprid was considered to be the only safe neonicotinoid insecticide (Class 1, RQ<50). A dipped egg contact bioassay showed that neonicotinoid insecticides induced significant toxic effects on the parasitism of three Trichogramma spp. at low-lethal concentrations. Additionally, emergence probability of the unexposed offspring was also significantly reduced by neonicotinoids. According to the estimated EC50 values, acetamiprid possessed the least toxicity to the parasitism and emergence of T. dendrolimi and T. ostriniae, and for T. confusum, the least toxic neonicotinoid insecticide was thiacloprid. Overall, among the test neonicotinoid insecticides, acetamiprid and thiacloprid may exhibit the less ecotoxicity to the test Trichogramma species.

The parasitoid Trichogramma species are indispensable natural enemies of many lepidopterans and it plays an important role in integrated pest management (IPM) programs throughout the world. Laboratory studies were conducted to compare the susceptibility of three Trichogramma egg parasitoid species to ten common insecticides and three herbicides. The adults of Trichogramma dendrolimi, T. chilonis, and T. ostriniae were exposed to the above-mentioned pesticides by a glass-vial residue method. Among the four neonicotinoids, dinotefuran and thiamethoxam exhibited extremely toxic effects on the Trichogramma dendrolimi and T. chilonis, with Risk Quotient (RQ) values ranging from 1471.2 to 5492.5. However, these two neonicotinoids have a relatively low toxicity to T. ostriniae, with RQ values 433.6 and 915.4, respectively. In addition, Imidacloprid and acetamiprid were slightly to moderately toxic to all the tested parasitic wasps and their RQ values are less than 500. For pyrethroids, all the selected compounds were slightly to moderately toxic to three Trichogramma species except that cyhalothrin was dangerously toxic to T. dendrolimi and T. chilonis, with RQ values 2567.6 and 3950.4. Among the three herbicides tested, pendimethalin, butralin and napropamid were slightly to moderately toxic to egg parasitoids, with all RQ values below 1000. For two avermectins, abamectin were slightly to moderately toxic to all three wasps with RQ values 635.6, 148.3 and 254.2, respectively. However, emamectin benzoate was found to be safe for the parasitoids. Furthermore, T. dendrolimi showed higher sensitivity than T. chilonis and T. ostriniae to the pesticides based on the comparison of LR50 (application rate causing 50% mortality) values. The present results provide informative data for implementing biological and chemical control strategies in integrated pest management.

The short day lengths of late summer in moderate regions are used to induce diapause in various insects. Many studies have shown the maternal effect of photoperiod on diapause induction of Trichogramma wasps, but there is no study to show the relationship between photoperiodic regimes and clock genes in these useful biological control agents. Here, we investigated the role of photoperiods on diapause, fecundity, and clock gene expression (clk, cyc, cry2, per, and timeout) in asexual and sexual Trichogramma brassicae as a model insect to find any differences between two strains. Asexual strain was infected by Wolbachia, an endosymbiont bacterium. The diapause percentage was significantly higher under short days (8 h in sexual and 12 h in the asexual T. brassicae), although the diapause percentage of the sexual strain was significantly higher than the asexual one in all the photoperiods. The ANOVA revealed no significant changes between different photoperiods in the clock gene expression in the sexual strain but significant photoperiodic changes in clk, cyc, and timeout in the asexual strain. Our results showed that the mRNA levels of clock genes of asexual T. brassicae were significantly lower than those of sexual strain. The fecundity was significantly higher in the asexual strain. These results suggest that Wolbachia infection makes disturbance on the clock gene expression which consequently reduces the percentage of diapause but increases the fecundity in asexual T. brassicae.

In laboratories, the parasitism rate of Ostrinia furnacalis (Güenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) eggs by Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) is low; however, efforts to control O. furnacalis with T. dendrolimi in the field have been successful. In this study, the effects of the number of attacks by T. dendrolimi against O. furnacalis eggs and diet of O. furnacalis larva on wasp development were investigated. The results indicated that more attacks increased significantly not only the successful parasitism rate of O. furnacalis eggs by T. dendrolimi, but also the percentage of host eggs that failed to develop into either O. furnacalis larvae or T. dendrolimi. Both the size and female proportion of T. dendrolimi offspring decreased as the number of attacks increased. The number of T. dendrolimi eggs laid in per host egg increased significantly as the ratio of wasps to host eggs increased from 1:5 to 3:5. Host diet also significantly affected the developmental time of immaturity and the emergence rate of adults of T. dendrolimi. These results illustrate how inundative releases of T. dendrolimi can successfully control O. furnacalis despite the fact that pest parasitism by the subsequent wasp generation decreases sharply in the field. The suitability of O. furnacalis eggs to T. dendrolimi and the superparasitism effects on offspring of T. dendrolimi are discussed.

Selective agrochemicals including herbicides that do not affect non-target organisms such as natural enemies are important in the integrated pest management (IPM) programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the herbicide toxicity, selectivity and hormesis of nicosulfuron, recommended for the corn Zea mays L. (Poaceae) crop, on 10 Trichogrammatidae (Hymenoptera) species. A female of each Trichogramma spp. or Trichogrammatoidea annulata De Santis, 1972 was individually placed in plastic test tubes (no choice) with a cardboard containing 45 flour moth Anagasta ( = Ephestia) kuehniella Zeller, 1879 (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs. Parasitism by these natural enemies was allowed for 48 h and the cardboards were sprayed with the herbicide nicosulfuron at 1.50 L.ha-1, along with the control (only distilled water). Nicosulfuron reduced the emergence rate of Trichogramma bruni Nagaraja, 1983 females, but increased that of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, 1879, Trichogramma acacioi Brun, Moraes and Smith, 1984 and T. annulata females. Conversely, this herbicide increased the emergence rate of Trichogramma brasiliensis Ashmead, 1904, T. bruni, Trichogramma galloi Zucchi, 1988 and Trichogramma soaresi Nagaraja, 1983 males and decreased those of T. acacioi, Trichogramma atopovilia Oatman and Platner, 1983 and T. pretiosum males. In addition, nicosulfuron reduced the sex ratio of T. galloi, Trichogramma bennetti Nagaraja and Nagarkatti, 1973 and T. pretiosum and increased that of T. acacioi, T. bruni, T. annulata, Trichogramma demoraesi Nagaraja, 1983, T. soaresi and T. brasiliensis. The herbicide nicosulfuron was "harmless" (class 1, <30% reduction) for females and the sex ratio of all Trichogrammatidae species based on the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) classification. The possible hormesis effect of nicosulfuron on Trichogrammatidae species and on the bacterium Wolbachia sp. (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) was also discussed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the herbicide mixture nicosulfuron + atrazine on 10 trichogrammatid species. A female of each trichogrammatid was placed in a test tube (no-choice) with a card with 45 Anagasta kuehniella eggs. Parasitism was allowed over a 48 h period, then the cards were sprayed with a solution containing nicosulfuron (30 g ha-1) + atrazine (1500 g ha-1), besides the control (distilled water). The nicosulfuron + atrazine mixture increased the Trichogramma atopovirilia and T. pretiosum female emergence. The percentage of T. acacioi, T. atopovilia and T. pretiosum male parasitoids emerged was higher in the control, and for T. demoraesi and Trichogrammatoidea annulata with nicosulfuron + atrazine. Sex ratio of the trichogrammatids was similar with nicosulfuron + atrazine.

What happens when an exotic herbivore invades and encounters novel host plants and enemies? Here, we investigate the impacts of host plant quality and plant architecture on an exotic generalist herbivore, Epiphyas postvittana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and its interactions with resident parasitoids in California. Using artificial diet and five plant species, we found significant effects of diet on the fitness of E. postvittana under laboratory conditions. In the field, based on a common garden experiment with host plants of nine species, we found that larval parasitism varied among plant species by a factor of 2.1 with a higher risk of parasitism on shorter than taller plants. Parasitism of egg masses varied by a factor of 4.7 among plant species with a higher risk of parasitism on taller than shorter plants. In the laboratory, the foraging time of a resident egg parasitoid on excised leaves varied among plant species, but did not correspond to observed egg parasitism rates on these same plants in the field. On leaves of Plantago lanceolata, the probability of egg parasitism decreased with trichome density. Overall, there was a significant effect of host plant on the intrinsic rate of increase of E. postvittana and on the extent of parasitism by resident parasitoids, but no correlation existed between these two effects. The recent decline of E. postvittana in California may be due to the low quality of some host plants and to the many resident enemies that readily attack it, perhaps due to its phylogenetic relatedness to resident tortricids.

Trichogramma chilonis Ishii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) is an important natural enemy of many species of lepidopterous pests and a widely used biological control agent. Detailed knowledge about its mate choice and host discrimination behavior is lacking. In this study, we studied the mate choice and host discrimination behavior of T. chilonis in experimental arenas through video tracking. Males' mate recognition capacity was realized by perceiving the sex pheromone of females. When offered two females of different species, male could distinguish the conspecific female from Trichogrammatoidea bactrae Nagaraja (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), a species that has overlapping hosts with T. chilonis. When placed with two females of different mating status, male preferred mating with the virgin female to the mated female. T. chilonis females could distinguish unparasitized host eggs from parasitized ones (parasitized by conspecific females or heterospecific females). They preferred to stay on and lay eggs in unparasitized host eggs. When T. chilonis females were only provided with parasitized host eggs (parasitized by T. chilonis and T. bactrae females), conspecific superparasitism occurred more often than heterospecific superparasitism. Furthermore, the host egg discrimination ability of T. chilonis females was mainly achieved through antennal perception.
