OBJECTIVE: To analyze the concordance between a hemoglobinometer with capillary blood sample and the clinical laboratory with a venous blood sample. DESIGN: Cross-sectional concordance study. LOCATION: Care Centre Primary Bufalà-Canyet Primary and Care Centre Primary Dalt la Vila Primary Care Center, Badalona, Barcelona. PARTICIPANTS: Random selection of participants who attended routine blood tests. Over 18years old. No abandonment or loss was obtained. MAIN INTERVENTIONS AND MEASUREMENTS: Sex, age, and reason for the blood test were collected from the medical history. Venous blood is drawn, and simultaneously, capillary blood is collected. RESULTS: 120 individuals are included, with an average age of 58.9years. The Bland-Almant graph showed differences within the confidence intervals for hemoglobin and hematocrit. The mean differences between the values of the Verio Q Red hemoglobinometer and those of the clinical laboratory were -0.42mg/dl for hemoglobin and -1.25% for hematocrit. The intraclass correlation coefficient showed excellent correlation for hemoglobin and hematocrit between the Verio Q Red hemoglobinometer and the clinical laboratory. Pearson's correlation for hemoglobin was 0.737 and for hematocrit 0.787. CONCLUSIONS: The Verio Q hemoglobinometer is a valid tool for the early diagnosis of anemias and can be very useful in primary care consultations.

In this study, 13 diesel degrading bacteria were isolated from the oil contaminated soils and the promising strains identified as Acinetobacter pittii ED1 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa BN were evaluated for their diesel degrading capabilities. These strains degraded the diesel optimally at 30 °C, pH 7.0 and 1% diesel concentration. Both the strains produced biofilm at 1% diesel concentration indicating their ability to tolerate diesel induced abiotic stress. Gravimetric analysis of the spent medium after 7 days of incubation showed that A. pittii ED1 and P. aeruginosa BN degraded 68.61% and 76% diesel, respectively, while biodegradation reached more than 90% after 21 days. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis of the degraded diesel showed 1636.67 cm-1 (C=C stretch, N-H bond) peak corresponding to alkenes and primary amines, while GC-TOF-MS analysis showed decline in hydrocarbon intensities after 7 days of incubation. The present study revealed that newly isolated A. pittii ED1 and P. aeruginosa BN were able to degrade diesel hydrocarbons (C11-C18, and C19-C24) efficiently and have potential for bioremediation of the oil-contaminated sites. Glaciers distinct from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are currently losing mass rapidly with direct and severe impacts on the habitability of some regions on Earth as glacier meltwater contributes to sea-level rise and alters regional water resources in arid regions. In this review, we present the different techniques developed during the last two decades to measure glacier mass change from space: digital elevation model (DEM) differencing from stereo-imagery and synthetic aperture radar interferometry, laser and radar altimetry and space gravimetry. We illustrate their respective strengths and weaknesses to survey the mass change of a large Arctic ice body, the Vatnajökull Ice Cap (Iceland) and for the steep glaciers of the Everest area (Himalaya). For entire regions, mass change estimates sometimes disagree when a similar technique is applied by different research groups. At global scale, these discrepancies result in mass change estimates varying by 20%-30%. Our review confirms the need for more thorough inter-comparison studies to understand the origin of these differences and to better constrain regional to global glacier mass changes and, ultimately, past and future glacier contribution to sea-level rise.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology, which is the national metrology institute of the USA, assigns certified values to the mass fractions of individual elements in single-element solutions, and to the mass fractions of anions in anion solutions, based on gravimetric preparations and instrumental methods of analysis. The instrumental method currently is high-performance inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy for the single-element solutions, and ion chromatography for the anion solutions. The uncertainty associated with each certified value comprises method-specific components, a component reflecting potential long-term instability that may affect the certified mass fraction during the useful lifetime of the solutions, and a component from between-method differences. Lately, the latter has been evaluated based only on the measurement results for the reference material being certified. The new procedure described in this contribution blends historical information about between-method differences for similar solutions produced previously, with the between-method difference observed when a new material is characterized. This blending procedure is justified because, with only rare exceptions, the same preparation and measurement methods have been used historically: in the course of almost 40 years for the preparation methods, and of 20 years for the instrumental methods. Also, the certified values of mass fraction, and the associated uncertainties, have been very similar, and the chemistry of the solutions also is closely comparable within each series of materials. If the new procedure will be applied to future SRM lots of single-element or anion solutions routinely, then it is expected that it will yield relative expanded uncertainties that are about 20 % smaller than the procedure for uncertainty evaluation currently in use, and that it will do so for the large majority of the solutions. However, more consequential than any reduction in uncertainty, is the improvement in the quality of the uncertainty evaluations that derives from incorporating the rich historical information about between-method differences and about the stability of the solutions over their expected lifetimes. The particular values listed for several existing SRMs are given merely as retrospective illustrations of the application of the new method, not to suggest that the certified values or their associated uncertainties should be revised.

Here, we report on the feasibility of using quantitative NMR and ultra-microbalances for additional measurements of the mass of poly-ethylene terephthalate (PET) particles in a reference material (RM). The microplastic (MP) PET particles were immobilised in solid NaCl following freeze-drying of a 1-ml NaCl suspension. The particles ranged from 30 to about 200 µm (Feretmin). In a 3-day process, more than 500 such units of PET particles in the NaCl carrier were prepared and later used in a large-scale inter-laboratory comparison. The homogeneity of PET in the salt carrier over these 500 units had previously been evaluated with respect to the mass of PET using an ultra-microbalance. In addition to the original results obtained by weighing, two independent results of quantitative 1H-NMR have been obtained for further investigation of this reference material together with one additional set of weighing data. The NMR data were used for confirmation of the weighed amount of PET (as weighing is non-specific for PET). Average masses of 0.293 ± 0.04 mg and 0.286 ± 0.03 mg of PET were obtained using two different ultra-microbalances (14% RSD for n = 14 and 9% RSD for n = 4, respectively). The corresponding 1H-NMR data was 0.300 ± 0.02 mg of PET (6.7% RSD for n = 5) and 0.345 ± 0.04 mg of PET (12.5% RSD for n = 14), respectively. The average mass of PET obtained by 1H-NMR measurements was in agreement with the weighed amounts within their standard deviations. A mean value of 0.306 mg PET with an expanded uncertainty of 0.058 mg (± 19% relative) was calculated, and it is traceable to the SI system of measurements. Measurement of PET by quantitative 1H-NMR spectroscopy is also reported for a water sample. The PET contained in one RM sample was transferred to 1 L of water to mimic a drinking water sample for microplastics.

Globally, the demand for masks has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in 490,201 tons of waste masks disposed of per month. Since masks are used in places with a high risk of virus infection, waste masks retain the risk of virus contamination. In this study, a 1 kg/h lab-scale (diameter: 0.114 m, height: 1 m) bubbling fluidized bed gasifier was used for steam gasification (temperature: 800 °C, steam/carbon (S/C) ratio: 1.5) of waste masks. The use of a downstream reactor with activated carbon (AC) for tar cracking and the enhancement of hydrogen production was examined. Steam gasification with AC produces syngas with H2, CO, CH4, and CO2 content of 38.89, 6.40, 21.69, and 7.34 vol%, respectively. The lower heating value of the product gas was 29.66 MJ/Nm3 and the cold gas efficiency was 74.55 %. This study showed that steam gasification can be used for the utilization of waste masks and the production of hydrogen-rich gas for further applications.

In this study, we present the feasibility of using gravity measurements made with a small inertial navigation system (INS) during in situ experiments, and also mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), to recover local gravity field variations. The INS operated is the SPATIAL one developed by Advanced Navigation, which has three-axis accelerometers. When the temperature bias is corrected, these types of INS are powerful enough to present the periodic signal corresponding to the solid Earth tides. There is also a clear correlation with the data measured at different altitudes by a CG5 gravimeter. However, these data were recorded on static points, so we also studied the INS in a moving platform on a UAV. Because there are a lot of vibrations recorded by the INS (wind, motor, on-board computer), the GPS and accelerometric data need to be filtered extensively. Once the data are corrected so they do not show thermal bias and low-pass filtered, we take the second derivative of the altitude (GPS) data to find the radial accelerometry of the drone and compare it to the radial accelerometry measured directly by the INS, in order to isolate the accelerometric signal that is related to the area that is being studied and the altitude. With a high enough precision, this method could be used to obtain the gravity variations due to the topography and density variations in the ground.

Shipborne atomic gravimeter (SAG) is an instrument that can directly measure absolute gravity in dynamic environments. As a new type of gravity sensor, a standard method for evaluating its detailed performance has not been proposed and the detailed performance of SAG was rarely reported. In this paper, a system of dynamic gravity measurement, which was integrated with a home-made atomic gravimeter, is demonstrated, and a novel and simple method for testing the performance of SAG on the lake based on the modulated Coriolis effect is put forward. Firstly, in the state of ship mooring, a tilt modulation of the gravity sensor has been realized to make sure the Raman wave vector is parallel to the gravity axis. Moreover, a comparison between the measurement result of CG-5 and SAG has also been carried out to evaluate the accuracy of the SAG. Then, the Coriolis effect modulating experiment is carried out with various routes on lake to test its performance in dynamic environments. In the ship mooring state, the accuracy has been demonstrated to be 0.643 mGal. The internal consistency reliabilities are evaluated to be 0.8 mGal and 1.2 mGal under the conditions of straight line and circle navigation, respectively.

Due to the edaphoclimatic conditions in southeast Spain, which are expected to worsen due to climate change, more efficient ways of using water must be found to maintain sustainable agriculture. Due to the current high price of irrigation control systems in southern Europe, 60-80% of soilless crops are still irrigated, based on the experience of the grower or advisor. The hypothesis of this work is that the development of a low-cost, high-performance control system will allow small farmers to improve the efficiency of water use by obtaining better control of soilless crops. The objective of the present study was to design and develop a cost-effective control system for the optimization of soilless crop irrigation after evaluating the three most commonly used irrigation control systems to determine the most efficient. Based on the agronomic results comparing these methods, a prototype of a commercial smart gravimetric tray was developed. The device records the irrigation and drainage volumes and drainage pH and EC. It also offers the possibility of determining the temperature, EC, and humidity of the substrate. This new design is scalable thanks to the use of an implemented data acquisition system called SDB and the development of software in the Codesys programming environment based on function blocks and variable structures. The reduced wiring achieved by the Modbus-RTU communication protocols means the system is cost-effective even with multiple control zones. It is also compatible with any type of fertigation controller through external activation. Its design and features solve the problems in similar systems available on the market at an affordable cost. The idea is to allow farmers to increase their productivity without having to make a large outlay. The impact of this work will make it possible for small-scale farmers to have access to affordable, state-of-the-art technology for soilless irrigation management leading to a considerable improvement in productivity.

The bottom relief and geophysical and gas-geochemical fields were refined, and new features of the geochemistry and mineralogy of bottom sediments were revealed.

​The present study is concerned with an overview of the main aspects of the selective collection from the municipal solid waste in São Paulo City and the limitations of its two automated Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to tackle the problem of reducing recyclable plastic waste sent to landfills as rejects. The research aimed to characterize the composition of screened mass flows of as-received mixes from the selective collection at the two MRFs through in situ random collection campaigns. The results of the gravimetric analysis have shown that both MRFs provided higher recovery yields (> 40%) for paper, cardboard, Tetrapack®, ferrous and non-ferrous metals (aluminium), akin to some post-consumer plastics (PET, HDPE/LDPE and PP) that ranged from 38% for PP up to 89% for HDPE, Losses in recovery yields of recyclable plastics after the screening process resulted from lack of clear resin label identification, inefficient materials sortation by households and poor recognition capabilities of the MRFs screening devices to target and segregate specific types of plastics such as PS and vinylic. Packaging design complexity, multi-layered material diversity, and food contaminated post-consumer packaging pose further challenges to improve the plastics recovery capabilities of the two MRFs.

In Normandy, flax is a plant of important economic interest because of its fibres. Fusarium oxysporum, a telluric fungus, is responsible for the major losses in crop yield and fibre quality. Several methods are currently used to limit the use of phytochemicals on crops. One of them is the use of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) occurring naturally in the rhizosphere. PGPR are known to act as local antagonists to soil-borne pathogens and to enhance plant resistance by eliciting the induced systemic resistance (ISR). In this study, we first investigated the cell wall modifications occurring in roots and stems after inoculation with the fungus in two flax varieties. First, we showed that both varieties displayed different cell wall organization and that rapid modifications occurred in roots and stems after inoculation. Then, we demonstrated the efficiency of a Bacillus subtilis strain to limit Fusarium wilt on both varieties with a better efficiency for one of them. Finally, thermo-gravimetry was used to highlight that B. subtilis induced modifications of the stem properties, supporting a reinforcement of the cell walls. Our findings suggest that the efficiency and the mode of action of the PGPR B. subtilis is likely to be flax variety dependent.

OBJECTIVE: To compare four haemoglobin measurement methods in whole blood donors. BACKGROUND: To safeguard donors, blood services measure haemoglobin concentration in advance of each donation. NHS Blood and Transplant's (NHSBT) customary method have been capillary gravimetry (copper sulphate), followed by venous spectrophotometry (HemoCue) for donors failing gravimetry. However, NHSBT's customary method results in 10% of donors being inappropriately bled (ie, with haemoglobin values below the regulatory threshold). METHODS: We compared the following four methods in 21 840 blood donors (aged ≥18 years) recruited from 10 NHSBT centres in England, with the Sysmex XN-2000 haematology analyser, the reference standard: (1) NHSBT's customary method; (2) "post donation" approach, that is, estimating current haemoglobin concentration from that measured by a haematology analyser at a donor's most recent prior donation; (3) "portable haemoglobinometry" (using capillary HemoCue); (4) non-invasive spectrometry (using MBR Haemospect or Orsense NMB200). We assessed sensitivity; specificity; proportion who would have been inappropriately bled, or rejected from donation ("deferred") incorrectly; and test preference. RESULTS: Compared with the reference standard, the methods ranged in test sensitivity from 17.0% (MBR Haemospect) to 79.0% (portable haemoglobinometry) in men, and from 19.0% (MBR Haemospect) to 82.8% (portable haemoglobinometry) in women. For specificity, the methods ranged from 87.2% (MBR Haemospect) to 99.9% (NHSBT's customary method) in men, and from 74.1% (Orsense NMB200) to 99.8% (NHSBT's customary method) in women. The proportion of donors who would have been inappropriately bled ranged from 2.2% in men for portable haemoglobinometry to 18.9% in women for MBR Haemospect. The proportion of donors who would have been deferred incorrectly with haemoglobin concentration above the minimum threshold ranged from 0.1% in men for NHSBT's customary method to 20.3% in women for OrSense. Most donors preferred non-invasive spectrometry. CONCLUSION: In the largest study reporting head-to-head comparisons of four methods to measure haemoglobin prior to blood donation, our results support replacement of NHSBT's customary method with portable haemoglobinometry.

The work considers for the first time the preparation of sorbents based on hypercrosslinked polysterene (HCP) and chelating agent N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) by impregnation in the supercritical (SC) CO2 medium. Such sorbents can be applied for further isolation and separation of lanthanides, actinides and other metals. They are usually prepared by impregnation in toxic organic solvents (e.g., methanol, dichloromethane). Our study shows that application of SC CO2 instead of organic solvents can significantly speed up the impregnation, perfom it in one stage and make the process more eco-friendly. At the same time, the obtained sorbents are close in their parameters to the classical ones. This article presents the results of measuring the TODGA adsorption isotherms on two HCP sorbents (MN202 and MN270) on a wide range of SC fluid parameters. Adsorption measurements were carried out using on-line supercritical fluid chromatography and gravimetry. Based on the sorption capacity parameter, MN202 sorbent was selected as the better carrier for TODGA. An impregnation temperature increase within the range 313-343 K in isochoric conditions (ρ = 0.780 g/mL) reduces the maximum of TODGA adsorption from ~0.68 mmol/g to ~0.49 mmol/g.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperhidrosis is a condition that significantly impairs patients' quality of life. Qualification for treatment in most cases is based only on subjective evaluation of symptoms without objective confirmation. AIM: To evaluate the differences between subjective and objective evaluation of sweating among medical students. MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were 179 participants involved in the study. Subjective evaluation of sweating was conducted using the Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale and Numeric Rating Scale in 4 body areas: the face, palms, armpits and abdomino-lumbar area. Objective evaluation of sweating was performed using gravimetry. RESULTS: The prevalence of hyperhidrosis in gravimetric measures was 1.12%. In subjective evaluation hyperhidrosis (HDSS 3 or 4) was present in 11.17% of cases. There was no significant difference in subjective evaluation of hyperhidrosis between men and women (15% vs. 9.24%; p = 0.32). In gravimetry men showed a higher perspiration rate on the face (5.85 vs. 3.38; p < 0.05) and in the armpits (17.27 vs. 9.12; p < 0.05). Individuals with body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2 reported hyperhidrosis more often (28% vs. 8.44%; p < 0.05); however, in gravimetric evaluation, beside the facial area, no significant differences in above-mentioned groups were observed. CONCLUSIONS: There is a discrepancy between subjective and objective methods of evaluating sweating.

This article compares gravimetry vs. high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as quality control (QC) methods for paclitaxel, docetaxel and oxaliplatin preparations. We aimed at assessing the preparation method reliability in our hospital, evaluating compounding accuracy and estimating the influence of personnel training and standardized homogenization on compounding accuracy. Agreement, correlation, concordance, accuracy and precision between methods were evaluated for each drug. Conforming preparation percentages (CPs) at different tolerance limits (TLs) and compounding accuracy were calculated for each method and drug. Compounding accuracy was compared before and after personnel training and standardized homogenization implantation. SPSS v 20.0 and Ene v 2.0 were used. A total of 222 samples (58 docetaxel, 95 paclitaxel and 69 oxaliplatin) were analyzed. Gravimetry and HPLC are comparable methods. Overall CP was 81% for gravimetry at 10% TL and 85% for HPLC at 15% TL. Compounding accuracy is shown to be good for all methods and drugs. Homogenization optimization and personnel training make measurements more accurate for docetaxel and paclitaxel HPLC, but seem to worsen accuracy for docetaxel gravimetry. Gravimetry has shown to be a good alternative to HPLC for routine QC. Coupling with electronic methods should be considered in the future.

The article discusses the registration of micro-gravity changes with the MGS-6 Micro-g LaCoste gravity sensor during static measurements. An experiment was carried out to determine how small changes in gravity can be registered using the MGS-6 system sensor. The tides of the Earth's crust were chosen as the source of disturbance of the field with small amplitude and long-term changes. The tested sensor was placed in a geophysical observatory on a specially designed tripod. Simultaneously on the nearby concrete pillar, the registration of changes in gravity was carried out using the superconducting iGrav gravimeter. The high temporal stability of the superconducting gravimeters and the low noise combined with leading sensitivity of its reading allow it to be considered as a reliable reference source for MGS-6. The article discusses the impact of non-leveling changes of the MGS-6 gravimetry on the reading and determines the size of its non-linear drift. The obtained differences in indications between devices did not exceed 50 µ Gal for 68% of data. The measurements also showed excellent time stability of the MGS-6 measurement system. The data collected during the experiment allowed determining the level of accuracy that can be sought during real measurements using the MGS-6 system on research vessels. They also give an overview of the dynamics of the drift phenomenon of the analyzed research system.

Total basin discharge is a critical component for the understanding of surface water exchange at the land-ocean interface. A continuous decline in the number of global hydrological stations over the past fifteen years has promoted the estimation of total basin discharge using remote sensing. Previous remotely sensed total basin discharge of the Yangtze River basin, expressed in terms of runoff, was estimated via the water balance equation, using a combination of remote sensing and modeled data products of various qualities. Nevertheless, the modeled data products are presented with large uncertainties and the seasonal error characteristics of the remotely sensed total basin discharge have rarely been investigated. In this study, we conducted total basin discharge estimation of the Yangtze River Basin, based purely on remotely sensed data. This estimation considered the period between January 2003 and December 2012 at a monthly temporal scale and was based on precipitation data collected from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite, evapotranspiration data collected from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite, and terrestrial water storage data collected from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite. A seasonal accuracy assessment was performed to detect poor performances and highlight any deficiencies in the modeled data products derived from the discharge estimation. Comparison of our estimated runoff results based purely on remotely sensed data, and the most accurate results of a previous study against the observed runoff revealed a Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) of 0.89 and 0.74, and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 11.69 mm/month and 14.30 mm/month, respectively. We identified some deficiencies in capturing the maximum and the minimum of runoff rates during both summer and winter, due to an underestimation and overestimation of evapotranspiration, respectively.

The strapdown gravimetry system uses the combination of an Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU) and a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to measure the Earth's gravity field. Due to limited accuracies of IMU and GNSS, early strapdown gravimetry systems were more often used in airborne surveys, but less used in marine surveys. We developed a strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS), the Sea-Air Gravimeter-2Marine (SAG-2M), using novel IMU components, whose accuracy was further improved with the application of Precise Point Positioning (PPP) and enhanced algorithm, making it possible to be used in marine gravity survey. The testing results of the SAG-2M were compared to those of the Lacoste and Romberg S-129 gravimeter on the same ship in the South China Sea basin. The cruise lasted for 50 days, during which 134 effective gravity profiles were measured, resulting in 174 crossover points. The results showed that, for the SAG-2M, the root mean square (RMS) crossover points were 1.35 mGal before difference adjustment and 0.69 mGal after difference adjustment; for the S-129 gravimeter, they were 5.62 mGal and 0.95 mGal, correspondingly. In calm sea conditions, the results of the two systems were relatively consistent at all wavelengths. However, in rough sea conditions, since the SAG-2M was not affected by the cross-coupling effect, its data demonstrated less high-frequency jump. A physical platform adopted in SAG-2M can further make the transition data effective when the ship is turning around. Therefore, SAG-2M was able to improve the proportion of valid data and the efficiency of data post-processing for measurements taken during the cruise. The testing results indicate that in terms of accuracy and efficiency in the marine gravity survey, SAG-2M is better than S-129. In addition, as the miniaturization and precision of inertial components are developing continuously, SAG-2M also shows great potential in miniaturization.

Quality assessment is an important part in the strapdown airborne gravimetry. Root mean square error (RMSE) evaluation method is a classical way to evaluate the gravimetry quality, but classical evaluation methods are preconditioned by extra flight or reference data. Thus, a method, which is able to largely conquer the premises of classical quality assessment methods and can be used in single survey line, has been developed in this paper. According to theoretical analysis, the method chooses the stability of two horizontal attitude angles, horizontal specific force and vertical specific force as the determinants of quality assessment method. The actual data, collected by SGA-WZ02 from 13 flights 21 lines in certain survey, was used to build the model and elaborate the method. To substantiate the performance of the quality assessment model, the model is applied in extra repeat line flights from two surveys. Compared with internal RMSE, standard deviation of assessment residuals are 0.23 mGal and 0.16 mGal in two surveys, which shows that the quality assessment method is reliable and stricter. The extra flights are not necessary by specially arranging the route of flights. The method, summarized from SGA-WZ02, is a feasible approach to assess gravimetry quality using single line data and is also suitable for other strapdown gravimeters.
