RESUMO

Hybrid lethality, a type of postzygotic reproductive isolation, is an obstacle to wide hybridization breeding. Here, we report the hybrid lethality that was observed in crosses between the cultivated tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum (section Nicotiana), and the wild tobacco species, Nicotiana simulans (section Suaveolentes). Reciprocal hybrid seedlings were inviable at 28 °C, and the lethality was characterized by browning of the hypocotyl and roots, suggesting that hybrid lethality is due to the interaction of nuclear genomes derived from each parental species, and not to a cytoplasmic effect. Hybrid lethality was temperature-sensitive and suppressed at 36 °C. However, when hybrid seedlings cultured at 36 °C were transferred to 28 °C, all of them showed hybrid lethality. After crossing between an N. tabacum monosomic line missing one copy of the Q chromosome and N. simulans, hybrid seedlings with or without the Q chromosome were inviable and viable, respectively. These results indicated that gene(s) on the Q chromosome are responsible for hybrid lethality and also suggested that N. simulans has the same allele at the Hybrid Lethality A1 (HLA1) locus responsible for hybrid lethality as other species in the section Suaveolentes. Haplotype analysis around the HLA1 locus suggested that there are at least six and two haplotypes containing Hla1-1 and hla1-2 alleles, respectively, in the section Suaveolentes.

We describe the identification and field testing of 3-methylthiopropan-1-ol (methionol) as a male-produced aggregation-sex pheromone for the cerambycid beetle Knulliana cincta cincta (Drury) (subfamily Cerambycinae, tribe Bothriospilini). The corresponding sulfoxide, 3-methylsulfinylpropan-1-ol, was also produced sex-specifically by males, but its function remains unclear because the measured release rates of this compound from five different types of release devices were very low to undetectable. Unexpectedly, adults of the cerambycine Elaphidion mucronatum (Say) (Elaphidiini), primarily females, also were attracted by methionol, despite males of this species producing an aggregation-sex pheromone of entirely different structure, (2E,6Z,9Z)-2,6,9-pentadecatrienal.

Plastid inheritance in angiosperms is presumed to be largely maternal, with the potential to inherit plastids biparentally estimated for about 20% of species. In Passiflora, maternal, paternal and biparental inheritance has been reported; however, these studies were limited in the number of crosses and progeny examined. To improve the understanding of plastid transmission in Passiflora, the progeny of 45 interspecific crosses were analyzed in the three subgenera: Passiflora, Decaloba and Astrophea. Plastid types were assessed following restriction digestion of PCR amplified plastid DNA in hybrid embryos, cotyledons and leaves at different developmental stages. Clade-specific patterns of inheritance were detected such that hybrid progeny from subgenera Passiflora and Astrophea predominantly inherited paternal plastids with occasional incidences of maternal inheritance, whereas subgenus Decaloba showed predominantly maternal and biparental inheritance. Biparental plastid inheritance was also detected in some hybrids from subgenus Passiflora. Heteroplasmy due to biparental inheritance was restricted to hybrid cotyledons and first leaves with a single parental plastid type detectable in mature plants. This indicates that in Passiflora, plastid retention at later stages of plant development may not reflect the plastid inheritance patterns in embryos. Passiflora exhibits diverse patterns of plastid inheritance, providing an excellent system to investigate underlying mechanisms in angiosperms.

BACKGROUND: Grapevine is a crop of major economic importance, yet little is known about the regulation of shoot development in grapevine or other perennial fruits crops. Here we combine genetic and genomic tools to identify candidate genes regulating shoot development in Vitis spp. RESULTS: An F2 population from an interspecific cross between V. vinifera and V. riparia was phenotyped for shoot development traits, and three Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) were identified on linkage groups (LGs) 7, 14 and 18. Around 17% of the individuals exhibited a dwarfed phenotype. A transcriptomic study identified four candidate genes that were not expressed in dwarfed individuals and located within the confidence interval of the QTL on LG7. A deletion of 84,482 bp was identified in the genome of dwarfed plants, which included these four not expressed genes. One of these genes was VviCURLY LEAF (VviCLF), an orthologue of CLF, a regulator of shoot development in Arabidopsis thaliana. CONCLUSIONS: The phenotype of the dwarfed grapevine plants was similar to that of clf mutants of A. thaliana and orthologues of the known targets of CLF in A. thaliana were differentially expressed in the dwarfed plants. This suggests that CLF, a major developmental regulator in A. thaliana, also controls shoot development in grapevine.

Hybrid weakness in Capsicum is characterized by the termination of leaf differentiation after the development of several leaves. F1 plants in some crosses between Capsicum annuum and Capsicum chinense show weakness; this phenomenon has not been investigated in detail since first reported. In the present study, we characterized morphologically and physiologically hybrid weakness in Capsicum. F1 plants did not show weaker growth than their parents 20 days after germination (DAG), but at 40 DAG, the hybrid weakness phenotype was evidenced by almost complete arrest of new leaf formation, delayed increase in plant height, and reduced upper internode length. The shoot apical meristem (SAM) of F1 plants exhibited delayed development and an abnormal structure characterized by a flat shape and the presence of fuzzy cell layers on the surface. These abnormal SAMs of F1 plants may lead to dwarfism. Dead cells and accumulation of H2O2 were visually detected in leaves of F1 plants, and cell death was considered to be programmed, as it was accompanied by internucleosomal fragmentation of DNA. The expression of immunity marker genes PR1 and PR2 was upregulated in leaves of F1 plants. These results suggest that a hypersensitive response-like reaction is involved in Capsicum hybrid weakness.

Trifolium alexandrinum (Egyptian clover) is a widely cultivated winter annual fodder. Present work deals with inheritance of the seed coat colour in segregating progenies of the interspecific cross between T. alexandrinum and T. apertum. Although, both the parent species possessed yellow seed coat, the F1 seeds were black coloured in the reciprocal cross (T. apertum × T. alexandrinum). Seeds borne on individual F2 plants and the advancing generations segregated in yellow and black seed coat colour, which confirmed xenia effect. F2 seeds collected from individual F1 plants exhibited nine black and seven yellow segregation ratio. The segregation of the seed coat colour recorded from F3 to F5 generations revealed that yellow seed coat was true breeding (i.e. non-segregating) in this interspecific cross (including the reciprocal crosses). However, the black seeded progenies were either true breeding or segregated in nine black: seven yellow ratio or three black: one yellow ratio suggesting a complementary gene interaction or duplicate recessive epistasis. It indicated that the seed coat colour is controlled by complementary gene interaction along with xenia effect in interspecific crosses between T. alexandrinum and T. apertum. Occurrence of the complementary genes across the species could suggest T. apertum to be the progenitor of T. alexandrinum. Inheritance of seed coat colour in reference to its importance in Egyptian clover breeding is also discussed.

KEY MESSAGE: Hybrid abnormalities, severe growth abortion and grass-clump dwarfism, were found in the tetraploid wheat/Aegilops umbellulata hybrids, and the gene expression changes were conserved in the hybrids with those in other wheat synthetic hexaploids. Aegilops umbellulata Zhuk., a diploid goatgrass species with a UU genome, has been utilized as a genetic resource for wheat breeding. Here, we examine the reproductive barriers between tetraploid wheat cultivar Langdon (Ldn) and various Ae. umbellulata accessions by conducting interspecific crossings. Through systematic cross experiments, three types of hybrid incompatibilities were found: seed production failure in crosses, hybrid growth abnormalities and sterility in the ABU hybrids. Hybrid incompatibilities were widely distributed over the entire range of the natural species, and in about 50% of the cross combinations between tetraploid Ldn and Ae. umbellulata accessions, ABU F1 hybrids showed one of two abnormal growth phenotypes: severe growth abortion (SGA) or grass-clump dwarfism. Expression of the shoot meristem maintenance-related and cell cycle-related genes was markedly repressed in crown tissues of hybrids showing SGA, suggesting dysfunction of mitotic cell division in the shoot apices. The grass-clump dwarf phenotype may be explained by down-regulation of wheat APETALA1-like MADS box genes, which act as flowering promoters, and altered expression in crown tissues of the miR156/SPLs module, which controls tiller number and branching. These gene expression changes in growth abnormalities were well conserved between the Ldn/Ae. umbellulata plants and interspecific hybrids from crosses of Ldn and wheat D-genome progenitor Ae. tauschii.

An increasing body of evidence suggests that the volatile pheromones of cerambycid beetles are much more diverse in structure than previously hypothesized. Here, we describe the identification, synthesis, and field testing of (2E,6Z,9Z)-2,6,9-pentadecatrienal as a male-produced aggregation-sex pheromone of the cerambycid Elaphidion mucronatum (Say) (subfamily Cerambycinae, tribe Elaphidiini). This novel structure is unlike any previously described cerambycid pheromone, and in field bioassays attracted only this species. Males produced about 9 µg of pheromone per 24 h period, and, in field trials, lures loaded with 10, 25, and 100 mg of synthetic pheromone attracted beetles of both sexes, whereas lures loaded with 1 mg of pheromone or less were not significantly attractive. Other typical cerambycine pheromones such as 3-hydroxy-2-hexanone, syn-2,3-hexanediol, and anti-2,3-hexanediol were not attractive to E. mucronatum, and when combined with (2E,6Z,9Z)-2,6,9-pentadecatrienal, the former two compounds appeared to inhibit attraction. Unexpectedly, adults of the cerambycine Xylotrechus colonus (F.) were attracted in significant numbers to a blend of 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one and (2E,6Z,9Z)-2,6,9-pentadecatrienal, even though there is no evidence that this species produces the latter compound. From timed pheromone trap catches, adults of E. mucronatum were determined to be active from dusk until shortly after midnight.

Chromosome elimination occurs frequently in interspecific hybrids between distantly related species in Poaceae. However, chromosomes from both parents behave stably in a hybrid of female oat (Avena sativa L.) pollinated by pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.). To analyze the chromosome behavior in this hybrid, we cloned the centromere-specific histone H3 (CENH3) genes of oat and pearl millet and produced a pearl millet-specific anti-CENH3 antibody. Application of this antibody together with a grass species common anti-CENH3 antibody revealed the dynamic CENH3 composition of the hybrid cells before and after fertilization. Despite co-expression of CENH3 genes encoded by oat and pearl millet, only an oat-type CENH3 was incorporated into the centromeres of both species in the hybrid embryo. Oat CENH3 enables a functional centromere in pearl millet chromosomes in an oat genetic background. Comparison of CENH3 genes among Poaceae species that show chromosome elimination in interspecific hybrids revealed that the loop 1 regions of oat and pearl millet CENH3 exhibit exceptionally high similarity.

In Japan, few grape cultivars related to Vitis vinifera existed 200 years ago, on account of Japan's high rainfall. Many V. labruscana and vinifera cultivars were introduced to Japan in the 19th century. Labruscana was grown instead of vinifera, mainly because of severe disease problems and a high incidence of berry cracking. Grape breeding for table use started in the 20th century, with the goal of combining the berry quality of vinifera with the ease of cultivation of labruscana. By 1945, three strategies were used: 1) crossing among introduced diploid vinifera and vinifera-related cultivars of Japanese origin, 2) interspecific crossing in tetraploid cultivars, and 3) interspecific crossing in diploid cultivars, resulting in 'Neo Muscat', 'Kyoho', and 'Muscat Bailey A'. Later, tetraploid interspecific crossing over generations developed many 'Kyoho'-related cultivars, including 'Pione', many of which have large berries, intermediate flesh texture between the two species, a labruscan or neutral flavor, and moderate disease resistance. Interspecific diploid crossing over generations developed 'Shine Muscat' in 2006, with large berries, crispy flesh, a muscat flavor, no cracking, seedless fruit by gibberellin application, and moderate resistance to downy mildew and ripe rot.

Enhanced ovary abscission after pollination and hybrid seed lethality result in post-zygotic reproductive isolation in plant interspecific crosses. However, the connection between these barriers remains unclear. Here, we report that an imbalance in parental genomes or endosperm balance number (EBN) causes hybrid seed lethality and ovary abscission in both interspecific and intraspecific-interploidy crosses in the genus Nicotiana. Auxin treatment suppressed ovary abscission, but not hybrid seed lethality, in an interspecific cross between Nicotiana suaveolens and N. tabacum, suggesting that ovary abscission-related genes are located downstream of those involved in hybrid seed lethality. We performed interploidy crosses among N. suaveolens tetraploids, octoploids, and neopolyploids and revealed hybrid seed lethality and ovary abscission in interploid crosses. Furthermore, a higher maternal EBN than paternal EBN caused these barriers, as previously observed in N. suaveolens × N. tabacum crosses. Altogether, these results suggest that maternal excess of EBN causes hybrid seed lethality, which in turn leads to ovary abscission through the same mechanism in both interspecific and interploidy crosses.

Previously, five putative quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for low-temperature germination (LTG) have been detected using 96 BC3F8 lines derived from an interspecific cross between the Korean japonica cultivar "Hwaseong" and Oryza rufipogon. In the present study, two introgression lines, CR1517 and CR1518, were used as parents to detect additional QTLs and analyze interactions among QTLs for LTG. The F2 population (154 plants) along with parental lines, Hwaseong and O. rufipogon, were evaluated for LTG and coleoptile length under low-temperature conditions (13 °C). Among five QTLs for LTG, two major QTLs, qLTG1 and qLTG3, were consistently detected at 6 and 7 days after incubation. Three minor QTLs were detected on chromosomes 8 and 10. Two QTLs, qLTG10.1 and qLTG10.2, showing linkage on chromosome 10, exerted opposite effects with the Hwaseong allele at qLTG10.2 and the O. rufipogon allele at qLTG10.1 respectively, in turn, increasing LTG. Interactions among QTLs were not significant, implying that the QTLs act in an additive manner. Near-isogenic line plants with the combination of favorable alleles from O. rufipogon and Hwaseong exhibited higher LTG than two introgression lines. With regard to coleoptile length, three QTLs observed on chromosomes 1, 3, and 8 were colocalized with QTLs for LTG, suggesting the pleiotropy of the single gene at each locus. According to the results, the introgression of favorable O. rufipogon alleles could hasten the development of rice with high LTG and high coleoptile elongation in japonica cultivars.

BACKGROUND: Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is generally sensitive to low temperatures, and in production systems that use direct-seeding, low-temperature germinability (LTG) is a desired trait. Previously, the QTLs, qLTG1 and qLTG3, that control LTG, were mapped using the BC4F8 population, which is a cross of Korean elite cultivar Hwaseong and O. rufipogon (IRGC 105491). We have characterized and analyzed the interaction between the two QTLs, by crossing TR20 that has O. rufipogon alleles at qLTG1 and qLTG3 in a Hwaseong background, with Hwaseong, to develop an F2 population. RESULTS: The F2 plants with both qLTG1 and qLTG3 alleles from O. rufipogon showed higher LTG scores, than the plants with only qLTG1 or qLTG3. No significant interaction between the qLTG1 and qLTG3 was observed, indicating that they may regulate LTG via different pathways. Based on its location, qLTG3 appears to be allelic with qLTG3-1, a major QTL known to control LTG. To investigate the genetic differences between the two parents, that were controlling LTG, we compared their qLTG3-1 sequences. In the coding region, three sequence variations leading to amino acid changes were identified between the Hwaseong and O. rufipogon. Of these, a non-synonymous substitution at the 62nd amino acid site, had not previously been reported. To understand the cause of the LTG variations between the parents, we genotyped three sequence variations of qLTG3-1, that were identified in 98 Asian cultivated rice accessions (Oryza sativa L.). The 98 accessions were classified into 5 haplotypes, based on three variations and a 71-bp deletion. Mean low-temperature germination rates were compared among the haplotypes, and haplotype 5 (O. rufipogon-type) showed a significantly higher germination rate than haplotype 2 (Nipponbare-type), and haplotype 3 (Italica Livorno-type). CONCLUSIONS: The O. rufipogon qLTG3-1 allele can be utilized for the improvement of LTG in rice breeding programs. Nearly isogenic lines harboring both qLTG1 and qLTG3-1 alleles from O. rufipogon, showed higher LTG scores than the NILs with qLTG1 or qLTG3-1 alone, and the two QTLs regulate LTG via different pathways. To our knowledge, this is the first report to detect a new qLTG3-1 allele and analyze the interaction of the two LTG QTLs in a nearly isogenic background.

Seed abortion and ovary abscission, two types of postzygotic reproductive barriers, are often observed in interspecific and/or interploidy crosses in plants. However, the mechanisms underlying these reproductive barriers remain unclear. Here, we show that the distinct types of seed developmental abnormalities (type I and type II seed abortion) occur in a phased manner as maternal to paternal genome dosage increases and that type II seed abortion is followed by ovary abscission. We revealed that these two types of seed developmental abnormalities are observed during seed development in the interploidy-interspecific crosses of Nicotiana suaveolens and N. tabacum. Moreover, in the cross showing type II seed abortion, several events, such as changes in abscission-related gene expression and lignin deposition, occurred in the ovary abscission zone, eventually leading to ovary abscission. Notably, successive increases in maternal ploidy using ploidy manipulated lines resulted in successive type I and type II seed abortions, and the latter was accompanied by ovary abscission. Conversely, both types of seed abortion and ovary abscission could be overcome with a ploidy manipulation technique that balances parental ploidy levels. We thus concluded that a high maternal genome excess cross may cause severe seed developmental defects and ovary abscission. Based on our findings, we propose a model explaining the abortion phenomena, where an interaction between the promotive and inhibitive effects of the parental genomes determines the developmental destiny of seeds. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: We demonstrate that a stepwise increase in maternal ploidy results in a stepwise increase in seed abortion severity, leading to ovary abscission in plants. We propose a model explaining the abortion phenomena, where an interaction between the promotive and inhibitive effects of the parental genomes determines the developmental destiny of seeds.

BACKGROUND: Improved eating quality is a major breeding target in japonica rice due to market demand. Consequently, quantitative trait loci (QTL) for glossiness of cooked rice and amylose content associated with eating quality have received much research focus because of their importance in rice quality. RESULTS: In this study, QTL associated with 12 grain quality traits were identified using 96 introgression lines (IL) of rice developed from an interspecific cross between the Korean elite O. sativa japonica cultivar 'Hwaseong' and O. rufipogon over 7 years. QTL analyses indicated that QTL qDTH6 for heading date, detected on chromosome 6 is associated with variance in grain traits. Most QTLs detected in this study clustered near the qDTH6 locus on chromosome 6, suggesting the effect of qDTH6. O. rufipogon alleles negatively affected grain quality traits except for a few QTLs, including qGCR9 for glossiness of cooked rice on chromosome 9. To characterize the effect of the O. rufipogon locus harboring qGCR9, four lines with a single but different O. rufipogon segment near qGCR9 were compared to Hwaseong. Three lines (O. rufipopgon ILs) having O. rufipogon segment between RM242 and RM245 in common showed higher glossiness of cooked rice than Hwaseong and the other line (Hwaseong IL), indicating that qGCR9 is located in the 3.4-Mb region between RM242 and RM245. Higher glossiness of cooked rice conferred by the O. rufipogon allele might be associated with protein content considering that three lines had lower protein content than Hwaseong (P < 0.1). These three O. rufipogon ILs showed higher yield than Hwaseong and Hwaseong IL due to increase in spikelets per panicle and grain weight indicating the linkage of qGCR9 and yield component QTLs. CONCLUSION: The qGCR9 locus is of particular interest because of its independence from other undesirable grain quality traits in O. rufipogon. SSR markers linked to qGCR9 can be used to develop high-quality japonica lines and offer a starting point for map-based cloning of genes underlying this trait. To our knowledge, this is the first report to map a beneficial QTL for glossiness of cooked rice from a wild rice, O. rufipogon.

A high density genetic map was constructed using F2 population derived from an interspecific cross of G. hirsutum × G. tomentosum. The map consisted of 3093 marker loci distributed across all the 26 chromosomes and covered 4365.3 cM of cotton genome with an average inter-marker distance of 1.48 cM. The maximum length of chromosome was 218.38 cM and the minimum was 122.09 cM with an average length of 167.90 cM. A sub-genome covers more genetic distance (2189.01 cM) with an average inter loci distance of 1.53 cM than D sub-genome which covers a length of 2176.29 cM with an average distance of 1.43 cM. There were 716 distorted loci in the map accounting for 23.14% and most distorted loci were distributed on D sub-genome (25.06%), which were more than on A sub-genome (21.23%). In our map 49 segregation hotspots (SDR) were distributed across the genome with more on D sub-genome as compared to A genome. Two post-polyploidization reciprocal translocations of "A2/A3 and A4/A5" were suggested by seven pairs of duplicate loci. The map constructed through these studies is one of the three densest genetic maps in cotton however; this is the first dense genome wide SSR interspecific genetic map between G. hirsutum and G. tomentosum.

Spontaneous hybrids between the two diploids Poa infirma Kunth and P. supina Schrader were obtained at the rate of 0.2%. No reciprocal maternal effect was observed. Almost all hybrids survived, grew normally but were sterile. Hybrids were diploid, and resembled in morphology the tetraploid P. annua L. (annual meadow grass). In their isozymes, they showed additivity of the parental patterns, and were very similar to those found in P. annua populations. The ease with which hybrids were obtained and the similarity of their morphological and isozyme pattern to P. annua suggest that the two diploid species are closely related to the allotetraploid species, and are perhaps its parent species.

• Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a dimorphic self-incompatible plant with either a pin or a thrum flower. It is considered that self-incompatibility, flower morphology, and pollen size are governed by the S supergene. • Here, we produced self-compatible buckwheat lines by an interspecific cross between F. esculentum and F. homotropicum with embryo rescue. • The flower morphology of these lines was long homostyle and pollen size was similar to that of thrum. Pollen size of F1 plants produced by a cross between a pin plant and the self-compatible plant was similar to that of the self-compatible line and segregated together with flower morphology without exception. The pollen tubes of the self-compatible plants were compatible with styles of the pin plants but incompatible with the styles of thrum plants. However, the pollen tubes of pin flowers were incompatible with the styles of self-compatible plants, but the pollen tubes of thrum flowers were compatible with the styles of self-compatible plants. • These results indicate that the self-compatibility allele, Sh , retains heteromorphic incompatibility and suggest that the Sh allele was derived from recombination in the S supergene.

Quantitative trait locus (QTL) genetics retains an important role in the study of biological and agronomic processes; however, its genetic resolution is often comparatively low. Community-based strategies are thus required to address this issue. Here we detail such a strategy wherein the widely used Solanum pennellii introgression lines (ILs) in the genetic background of the cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) are broken up into molecular marker-defined sublines as a community resource for map-based cloning.

Fertility obtained by cross-breeding mares (Equus caballus) with jackasses (Equus asinus) was evaluated. Two extenders, containing skim milk-glucose or egg yolk-glycine were used to study the fertility of mares inseminated with diluted jackass semen (T1 and T2) or diluted and cooled semen at 5°C for 12 hours (T3 and T4). A total of 272 cycles of 208 mares of undefined breeds were evaluated, being uniformly distributed between groups. The cycles were controlled by transrectal palpation and teasing, and mares were inseminated every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (three times/week), from the detection of a follicle with 3.0 to 3.5cm diameter in one of the ovaries until ovulation. Pregnancy was detected using transrectal palpation, teasing and ultrasound exams every 14 days. The extenders had no effect on fertility (P>0.05). Pregnancy rates for the first cycle were 64.52%, 61.11%, 50.72% and 54.17% and pregnancy rates/cycle were 63.64%, 54.55%, 52.69% and 47.06%, respectively, for T1, T2, T3 and T4. Differences in pregnancy loss rates between groups and effect of month of conception on fertility were found. Pregnancy loss rates were significantly higher (P<0.05) in January (38.46%) and in February and March (52.38%), with an average of 33.09%. The results indicate that mares conceiving at the end of the physiological reproduction time, carrying a mule embryo, are more susceptible to pregnancy loss.


Avaliou-se a eficiência reprodutiva de cruzamentos interespécies entre fêmeas equinas e reprodutores asininos da raça Pêga. Para tal, estudou-se o efeito de dois diluidores, à base de leite em pó desnatado-glicose ou glicina-gema de ovo, sobre a fertilidade de éguas inseminadas com sêmen fresco diluído (T1 e T2) ou diluído e resfriado a 5°C por 12 horas (T3 e T4). Foram utilizados 272 ciclos de 208 éguas mestiças, distribuídas uniformemente entre os tratamentos, após agrupamento por idade e categoria reprodutiva. Os ciclos foram acompanhados por palpação retal e rufiação, sendo as inseminações realizadas às terças, quintas e aos sábados (três vezes por semana), a partir da detecção de um folículo de 3,0 a 3,5cm de diâmetro, em um dos ovários, até a ovulação. As gestações foram acompanhadas por palpação transretal, rufiação e por ultrassonografia, realizada a cada 14 dias. As taxas de gestação obtidas, ao primeiro ciclo, não diferiram (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos, sendo de 64,52% para T1, 61,11% para T2, 50,72% para T3 e 54,17% para T4. Da mesma maneira, as taxas de gestação por ciclo também não foram influenciadas (P>0,05) pelos tratamentos, com valores de 63,64%, 54,55%, 52,69% e 47,06% para T1, T2, T3, e T4, respectivamente. No que diz respeito às taxas de perdas gestacionais, obtidas por meio das taxas de perdas e de perdas ajustadas, houve influência (P<0,05) dos tratamentos. Observou-se, ainda, efeito do mês da concepção, com taxas de perda superiores para os meses de janeiro (38,46%) e de fevereiro e março (52,38%), sendo a média de 33,09%. Sugere-se que a redução dos padrões de secreção do LH, ao final da estação de monta, responda pelas maiores taxas de perdas gestacionais do cruzamento interespécie, notadamente naquelas éguas que conceberam no final da estação de monta fisiológica dos equinos.
