RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome is more and more important because of its mortality and morbidity. Hypertension is one of the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndrome, which often leads to stenosis and ischaemia. Ischaemia-modified albumin is sensitive for the occurrence of ischaemia, which attracted us in the significance of ischaemia-modified albumin in patients with chest pain, especially patients complicated with hypertension. METHODS: In total, 200 patients with acute chest pain were included in the study. According to the diagnostic criteria, patients were divided into acute coronary syndrome group and non-ischaemic chest pain group. Cardiac biomarkers were measured with 30 minutes in emergency department, including cardiac troponin T, creatine kinase MB, and ischaemia-modified albumin. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was used for the sensitivity and specificity of ischaemia-modified albumin in the early diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome. Comparisons between ischaemia-modified albumin and cardiac Troponin T were done between groups. RESULTS: The demographics in two groups were not significantly different in most aspects. Compared with non-ischaemic chest pain group, serum levels of ischaemia-modified albumin and cardiac Troponin T were significantly higher in acute coronary syndrome group. ROC analysis showed that ischaemia-modified albumin had a good sensitivity and specificity in early diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome. The level of ischaemia-modified albumin in acute coronary syndrome patients with hypertension was higher than that in non-ischaemic chest pain patients. CONCLUSIONS: In patients complained with acute chest pain, the serum measurement of ischaemia-modified albumin is potential valuable for the early diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome, especially combined with ECG. The serum level of ischaemia-modified albumin in acute coronary syndrome patients is significantly associated with hypertension.

RESUMO

This study aims to examine the role of ischaemic-modified albumin (IMA) in predicting clomiphene citrate (CC) resistance in patients with CC-resistant and CC-sensitive infertile polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Sixty women patients admitted to the infertility clinic were evaluated. The patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 comprised 30 infertile PCOS patients with CC resistance; group 2 was the control group comprising 30 infertile PCOS patients with CC sensitivity. Serum IMA levels of PCOS patients with CC resistance were significantly higher than CC sensitivity patients (p < .001). The independent variables BMI and age effects were adjusted according to the logistic regression method with groups. Significant differences were observed between the two groups in the levels of IMA (p = .0005), HOMA-IR (p = .0045), insulin (p = .022), free testosterone (p = .0001) and total testosterone (p = .03) values. By using ROC curve analysis for IMA between study and control groups, cut off point of IMA was calculated as 0.505 U/mL, sensitivity was 80% and specificity was 63%. The area under the curve was 0.926. This shows us that more oxidative stress (OS) occurs in the CC-resistant group. As a reflection of OS in the follicular endocrine, microenvironment may be linked with impaired oocyte developmental competence and embryo quality in association with increased IMA, free testosterone, total testosterone, insulin and HOMA-IR levels.Impact statementWhat is already known on this subject? In previous studies, IMA was compared between PCOS and control groups. In this study, serum IMA levels were measured in infertile PCOS patients resistant to CC for the first time. What the results of this study add? Serum IMA levels were significantly higher in resistant infertile PCOS patients compared to the control group. This shows us that more OS occurs in the CC-resistant group. What the implications are of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? IMA will be a guide for PCOS management in patients with CC-resistant PCOS.

RESUMO

Purpose: To examine thiol-disulphide homeostasis auto painters.Materials and methods: A total of 115 male workers, including 60 auto painters workers and 55 reference group, of the painting and assembly line units respectively, were included in the study. Thiol-disulphide parameters and ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) of groups were determined. Urinary hippuric acid, (HA) phenol, hexanedione, trichloroacetic acid, arsenic and blood lead and manganese were analysed. Results: The median urinary HA level was significantly higher in auto painters when compared to the reference group [(2461 (1212) vs. 520 (513) µgr/L), (p < 0.001)] . The mean disulphide level [19.7 (4.3) vs 0.15.1(4.1) µmol/L, (p < 0.001)], the disulphide/native thiol ratio [4.72 (1.47) vs. 3.13 (1.21, (p < 0.001)] and the disulphide/total thiol ratio [4.31 (1.23) vs. 2.94 (1.06), (p < 0.001)] were higher in auto painters when compared to the reference group. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between urinary HA and disulphide concentrations (r = 0.536 and p < 0.001), disulphide/native thiol ratio (r = 0.564 and p < 0.001) and the disulphide/total thiol ratio (r = 0.564 and p < 0.001) and IMA (r = 0.396 and p < 0.001).Conclusion: The results presented in this study showed that oxidative stress can be associated with occupational exposure to toluene denoted by alteration of thiol disulphide homeostasis and ischaemia-modified albumin levels.

RESUMO

Our aim was to explore the existence of a possible relationship of sperm motility with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25-OH VD) levels and with ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels in infertile Turkish men. A total of 30 men with nonobstructive azoospermia (no spermatozoa in ejaculate), 30 men with oligospermia (total progressive motile sperm count (TPMSC) <15 × 106 /ml) and 33 fertile men with normospermia (with at least one child, as the control group) were enrolled in the study. The mean 25-OH VD levels for groups 1, 2 and 3 were 9.31 ± 6.46, 19.71 ± 12.80 and 30.52 ± 12.49 respectively (p < .05). There was a statistically significant difference in serum IMA levels among the groups (479.32 ± 307.56 vs. 296.37 ± 127.27 vs. 150.04 ± 81.05, respectively; p < .05). A positive correlation between serum 25-OH VD levels and TPMSC, and a negative correlation between TPMSC and serum IMA levels were determined. Infertile men had lower serum 25-OH VD and higher IMA levels than fertile men, with a positive correlation between serum 25-OH VD levels and TPMSC, and a negative correlation between TPMSC and serum IMA levels. Vitamin D supplementation may increase the sperm motility.

RESUMO

Our aim was to measure the ability of ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) to predict testicular histopathological damage in the testes of rats with short- and long-term ischaemia using experimental testicular torsion and subsequent reperfusion via detorsion.21 Wistar Albino rats were randomized into three groups. The sham group was subjected to a mid-scrotal incision only. The 4- and 8-hr T/D (Torsion/Detorsion) groups were subjected to left testicular torsion by twisting the testes by 720 degrees counterclockwise. 2 cc venous blood samples were taken from the sham group after the mid-scrotal incision, and from the 4- and 8-hr T/D groups after 4 and 8 hr respectively. After that, the 4- and 8-hr T/D groups were subjected to detorsion. Two days later, orchiectomy was performed. Ischaemia-modified albumin levels were significantly different among the groups at 48 hr prior to orchiectomy (reperfusion; p = .003). Based on the results of the paired comparisons, it was found that IMA levels of the sham group were significantly higher than those of the 4- and 8-hr T/D groups (p = .002 and .009 respectively). Our study has showed that IMA may be used to predict ischaemia/reperfusion injury, which is another complication that may occur following detorsion in testicular torsion.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis chronic urticaria (CU) hasn't been fully understood. In recent years, it has been shown that thiol-disulphide homoeostasis, as an antioxidant system, plays important roles in both healthy individuals and various diseases. In different ischaemia-reperfusion states, high oxidative stress causes ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) generation. AIM: To investigate thiol/disulphide balance and IMA level in children with CU and their association with disease severity. METHODS: Thirty children with CU and 20 healthy children as controls, aged 1-18 years, were included in this cross-sectional study. In all subjects, total thiol, native thiol, disulphide levels and IMA levels were measured in plasma by spectrophotometry. Disulphide/native thiol, disulphide/total thiol and native thiol/total thiol ratios were calculated. The disease severity was rated by Urticaria Activity Score (UAS). RESULTS: In the children with CU, the levels of native thiol (375.56 ± 56.22 µmol/L) and total thiol (415.69 ± 54.75 µmol/L) were significantly lower than the control group (475.20 ± 71.87 and 511.20 ± 73.73 µmol/L, respectively) (p = 0.000, p = 0.000). The ratio of native/total thiol * 100 was lower in patients than the control group (p = 0.002). IMA was significantly higher in the patient group than control group (p = 0.000). No significant correlation was found between UAS and thiol/disulphide homoeostasis (p > 0.05). The disulphide levels, disulphide/native thiol and disulphide/total thiol levels were found to be higher in patients with positive family history for autoimmune disorders than those without (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In children with CU, impaired thiol/disulphide homoeostasis and increased IMA suggest that oxidative stress may play role in the disease pathogenesis.

RESUMO

AIM: The differential diagnosis of paediatric patients admitted to the emergency department presenting with acute abdominal pain may be difficult. This study aims to investigate the diagnostic value of ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain in children and in distinguishing surgical from non-surgical cases. METHODS: The study was conducted with a total of 152 subjects who provided informed consent, including 112 patients admitted to the paediatric emergency department and paediatric surgical clinic and 40 healthy control subjects. Blood samples were collected after initial examination to determine IMA, white blood cell (WBC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) values. RESULTS: Mean IMA values of patients with acute appendicitis (AA), perforated appendicitis (PA) and non-specific abdominal pain were significantly higher compared to the control group. Mean IMA values of the AA and PA cases were also significantly higher compared to the group with non-specific abdominal pain. No significant difference was determined in mean IMA between the AA and PA groups. WBC and CRP levels of the AA and PA groups were significantly higher compared to the group with non-specific abdominal pain. CONCLUSION: Our study shows that IMA, together with WBC and CRP, may be a biomarker capable of assisting the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain in children and distinguishing surgical from non-surgical cases.

RESUMO

Oxidative stress plays an important role in the development of infertility secondary to varicocele. We aimed to investigate the dynamic thiol-disulphide homeostasis as an oxidative stress marker in the spermatic vein of infertility secondary to varicocele. Sixty-one patients with varicocele were included in the study. Blood was drawn from the median cubital vein and the testicular venous return side before the spermatic vein was separated during surgery. Total thiol, native thiol, disulphide, ischaemia modified albumin (IMA) and albumin values were measured from both the dilated spermatic vein and the median cubital vein. The disulphide/native thiol, disulphide/total thiol and native thiol/total thiol ratios were determined. The mean age of the patients was 27.0 ± 6.68 (15-50) years. While the albumin, native thiol and total thiol values and the native thiol/total thiol ratio were significantly lower (p = 0.004, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001 respectively), the IMA value and the disulphide/native thiol and disulphide/total thiol ratios were significantly higher (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001 respectively) in the samples taken from spermatic venous blood. Thiol-disulphide balance had deteriorated towards disulphide formation in the spermatic vein compared with the peripheral vein. Abnormal thiol-disulphide balance may be an independent risk factor for infertility secondary to varicocele.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is considered to be a prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease. The clinical role of ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) and the association between IMA and oxidative stress in aMCI have not been investigated. The aim of the study was to explore this relationship and to generate new ideas for controlling Alzheimer's disease. METHODS: This community-based case-control study included 113 patients with aMCI and 832 cognitively normal controls. Serum levels of albumin and IMA, diacron-reactive oxygen metabolite, and biological anti-oxidant potential, were measured. The IMA/albumin ratio and the biological anti-oxidant potential/diacron-reactive oxygen metabolite ratio were calculated. RESULTS: In univariate analysis, the serum IMA level and the IMA/albumin ratio were higher in the aMCI patients than in the controls (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). In multivariate analysis, a serum IMA level ≥476.4 ng/mL and an IMA/albumin ratio ≥9.4 were separately associated with the development of aMCI (odds ratio = 3.56, 95% confidence interval: 2.33-5.46; odds ratio = 3.43, 95% confidence interval: 2.25-5.27, respectively). There was a linear correlation between serum IMA level and several oxidative stress markers (biological anti-oxidant potential/diacron-reactive oxygen metabolite ratio: r = -0.585, P < 0.001; diacron-reactive oxygen metabolite: r = 0.549, P < 0.001; biological anti-oxidant potential: r = -0.293, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Serum IMA might be a potential biomarker for oxidative stress in aMCI.

RESUMO

This study was designed to evaluate umbilical cord ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels and the cord blood gas parameters of foetuses with or without nuchal cords, at the time of elective C-section. The cross-sectional study population consisted of the patients who were admitted to the Tertiary Care Center between February and June 2015. Women with uncomplicated single term gestations between 37 and 40 completed weeks and scheduled for elective C-sections were included in the study. Fifty cases with a nuchal cord and 50 cases without a nuchal cord were recruited. Nuchal cord blood gas analysis and the IMA levels were evaluated. The IMA levels in umbilical artery of foetuses both in the study and control groups were similar (0.714 ± 0.150 vs. 0.689 ± 0.107 ABSU, p = .340, respectively). The umbilical artery pH values of the study group were significantly lower than that in the control group (7.31 ± 0.04 vs. 7.32 ± 0.03, p = .042; respectively). The results of the current study indicate that the nuchal cord has an impact on the foetal cord blood gas parameters to some extent before the initiation of labour. Fortunately, this impact does not end up with foetal tissue ischaemia, as confirmed by the IMA levels. Impact statement What is already known on this subject? The impact of nuchal cord on perinatal outcomes has been the subject of research for many years. Although the accumulated data has pointed out some unfavourable perinatal effects, the heterogeneity of the study groups both including a vaginal delivery and C-section and the inability to adjust the interfering factors ended up with some controversies. This is why there is not much known about the effects of the nuchal cord in women who are not in the labour process. What do the results of this study add? The current study aimed to exclude the interfering effects such as the active stage of labour. In this study, elective caesarean sections were selected as the study population to evaluate the effects of the nuchal cord on cord blood gas parameters and the IMA values. pH analysis in cord blood is used to detect hypoxia and the IMA is a new ischaemia marker. The results revealed that the in utero nuchal cord is associated with a significantly higher pCO2 and lower pH values and similar IMA values. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? The final outcome supports that the nuchal cord causes alterations in cord blood gas analysis but this does not reach critical levels. Therefore, the results show that there is no need to change clinical practice when the nuchal cord is detected by ultrasound in a term gestation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive method that is effective at crushing stones in the upper urinary tract. Disturbance of the thiol/disulfide homeostasis, in favor of the disulfide, has been shown to be involved in the disease pathogenesis. METHODS: A total of 36 individuals that underwent ESWL had blood samples collected before ESWL (0hrs), 6hrs, and one week after the ESWL. Sera native and total as wells as disulfide amount was measured using an automated method sodium borohydrate (NaBH4) reduction. In addition, Ischemia Modified Albumin (IMA) levels were measured using colorimetric assay method. RESULTS: Native thiol level was reduced at the 6th hour following ESWL compared to baseline. While the ratios of disulfide level, Disulfide/Total Thiol (DTT), Disulfide/Native Thiol (DNT) and IMA level were increased at the 6th hour following ESWL compared to baseline, they were found to be similar with their baseline values at the end of 1st week. Total thiol and native /total thiol did not show any significant change. CONCLUSIONS: ESWL treatment disrupts thiol/disulfide homeostasis and the structure of albumin at the acute term. Therefore, it increases protein oxidation and leads to increased oxidative stress. However, this state is transient and returns to normal within the proceeding days.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to compare ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels, both original and corrected, in healthy pregnancies and pregnancies complicated with preeclampsia. Maternal and cord blood samples from study (n = 16) and control (n = 17) groups were collected at the time of delivery. IMA levels were given in absorbance units (ABSU). IMA levels, both original and corrected, were compared between study and control groups. No significant difference was found between maternal and cord blood IMA levels between the study and control groups [1.0 (0.3-3.5) vs 1.2 (0.2-1.4) ABSU, p = .053 and 1.0 (0.1-2.2) vs 0.9 (0.4-3.6) ABSU, p = .382, respectively]. The results were similar for maternal IMA levels, after correction of IMA levels [1.1 (0.3-5.1) vs 1.2 (0.2-1.6) ABSU, p = .292]. IMA is a novel marker for ischaemia, without precise conclusions about its value in preeclampsia. An absolute correction formula, considering all possible intervening factors, is required for more accurate results.

RESUMO

We assessed the serum levels of gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Fifty-three patients with PCOS were included in our study along with 40 women with no PCOS as the control group. The patients were divided according to their body mass index (BMI). GGT levels were significantly higher in the women with PCOS than the women in the control group (p < 0.05). They were also significantly higher in the PCOS women who were normoweight and overweight than the normoweight and overweight women in the control group (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the circulating levels of hsCRP and IMA between the women with PCOS and the controls or between the normoweight and overweight subgroups. GGT may be associated with the diagnosis of PCOS when the threshold is set at >15.5 U/L. With the application of this threshold, raised GGT levels had 83% sensitivity (95% CI 0.70-0.90) and 67.5% specificity (95% CI 0.52-0.79), for the diagnosis of PCOS. In our study, GGT levels were elevated in the PCOS patients independent of BMI and could thus be an important marker of PCOS.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients with cirrhosis present structural changes of human serum albumin (HSA) affecting non-oncotic functions. Ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA), which reflects the capacity to bind cobalt, has been associated to patient mortality during acute-on-chronic liver failure. This study aimed to assess whether circulating IMA is elevated in advanced cirrhosis and its relationship with severity of cirrhosis and specific complications. METHODS: A total of 127 cirrhotic patients hospitalized for an acute complication of the disease and 44 healthy controls were enrolled. Plasma IMA and IMA to albumin ratio (IMAr) were measured with a cobalt-binding assay. HSA isoforms carrying post-transcriptional molecular changes were assessed with HPLC-ESI-MS. The effect of endotoxemia on IMA was evaluated in rats with CCl4 -cirrhosis. RESULTS: IMA/IMAr is significantly higher in cirrhotic patients than in controls, but no correlations were found with prognostic scores. IMA did not correlate with the altered HSA isoforms. Ascites, renal impairment and hepatic encephalopathy did not influence IMA/IMAr levels. In contrast, IMA/IMAr is significantly higher in infected than non-infected patients. ROC curves showed that IMA/IMAr had similar discriminating performances for bacterial infection as C-reactive protein (CRP). Moreover, CRP and IMA were independently associated with bacterial infection. Consistently, endotoxin injection significantly increased IMA in cirrhotic, but not in healthy rats. CONCLUSIONS: IMA is elevated in patients with advanced cirrhosis. The IMA level does not correlate with disease severity scores, but it is specifically associated to bacterial infection, showing a discriminating performance similar to CRP. Further investigations to assess IMA as a novel diagnostic test for bacterial infection are advocated.

RESUMO

Ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) is a marker of the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during hypoxaemia. In elite divers, breath-hold induces ROS production. Our aim was to evaluate the kinetics of IMA serum levels during apnea. Twenty breath-hold divers were instructed to perform a submaximal static breath-hold. Twenty non-diver subjects served as controls. Blood samples were collected at rest, every minute, at the end of breath-hold, and 10 min after recovery. The IMA level increased after 1 min of breath-hold (p < 0.003) and remained high until recovery. Divers were separated into 2 groups: subjects who held their breath for less than 4 min (G-4) and those who held it for more than 4 min (G+4). After 3 min of apnoea, the increase of IMA was higher in the G-4 group than in the G+4 group (p < 0.008). However, at the end of apnoea, the IMA level did not differ between groups. If IMA level was globally correlated with the apnoea duration, it is interesting to note that the higher IMA level was not found in the best divers. Similarly, if arterial blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) was globally inversely correlated with apnoea duration, the lowest SpO2 at the end of breath-hold was not found in the divers that performed the best apnoea. We concluded that these divers save their oxygen. The IMA level provides a useful measure of resistance to hypoxaemia.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether levels of fetal hypoxia markers, S100 and ischaemia modified albumin (IMA) change in cases of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). This case-control study included 15 intrauterine growth restricted fetuses and 20 age-matched controls. During delivery of the fetuses, cord blood and maternal blood S100 and IMA levels were studied. The fetal weight and umbilical cord pH values of IUGR fetuses were significantly lower than the control group. The mean maternal and umbilical cord blood values of S100 and IMA were similar in the two groups. IMA levels in cord blood of the IUGR group were significantly higher than maternal levels, whereas umbilical and maternal levels of IMA did not differ among control cases. In cases without brain sparing effect in Doppler ultrasonography, umbilical cord S100 and IMA levels do not change significantly in IUGR when compared with appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) fetuses.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that obstructive sleep apnea increases incidence of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The high systemic oxidative stress in obstructive sleep apnea has been considered as a major pathogenic mechanism leading to cardiovascular disease. Oxidative stress-related lipid and DNA oxidation in obstructive sleep apnea have been reported in the previous studies. In contrast, there is limited and contradictory information regarding protein oxidation in obstructive sleep apnea patients such as ischaemia-modified albumin and advanced oxidation protein products. Therefore, we aimed to investigate plasma ischaemia-modified albumin and advanced oxidation protein products and their correlation with total oxidative status and total antioxidative capacity in the obstructive sleep apnea patients. METHODS: Plasma ischaemia-modified albumin, advanced oxidation protein products, total oxidative status and total antioxidative capacity were measured in 25 healthy volunteers and 59 obstructive sleep apnea patients diagnosed with polysomnography. RESULTS: Plasma total antioxidative capacity was significantly lower (P = 0·012) and total oxidative status was significantly higher (P < 0·001) in the patients compared to the controls demonstrating increased oxidative stress in the patients. Plasma advanced oxidation protein products were significantly higher in the patients than the controls (P = 0·024). Plasma ischaemia-modified albumin levels were not statistically different between the obstructive sleep apnea patients and controls (P = 0·74). CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that high systemic oxidative stress in obstructive sleep apnea is reflected by increased advanced oxidation protein products without causing an increase in ischaemia-modified albumin.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acute mesenteric ischaemia is an emergency condition that requires urgent and expeditious diagnosis and immediate surgical or medical intervention. The initial hours are critical for the recovery of the affected bowel segment. Thus, its clinic diagnostic biomarkers are important when it comes to reducing mortality and morbidity rates. METHODS: Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were included in the study. The rats were divided into three equal groups. Those in Group I were sacrificed to determine the basal serum values of ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) after a simple laparotomy. The superior mesenteric artery (SMA) was clamped in a simple laparotomy in Groups II and III; blood samples were taken at 120 minutes in Group II and 360 minutes in Group III. The serum IMA levels were identified from the blood samples and the results obtained were compared statistically. RESULTS: The serum IMA levels were determined to be 22±6 (22) µ/L, 34±7 (34) µ/L and 36±4 (37) µ/L in Groups I, II and III, respectively. The differences between the groups were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that the serum IMA level is not an appropriate biomarker for acute mesenteric ischaemia. Additionally, the IMA level is not an appropriate biomarker for the detection of ischaemia duration. However, future studies should be conducted to clarify the efficacy of serum IMA levels under different ischaemic conditions.

RESUMO

Introduction: An increased level of ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) is not specific for cardiac ischaemia and has been shown to be elevated in many other conditions causing oxidative stress. Aim: To assess the association between IMA and the disease activity in ulcerative colitis (UC), in which oxidative stress is thought to play a role in its pathogenesis. Material and methods: A total of 57 patients with ulcerative colitis (30 with active disease and 27 in remission) and 29 healthy controls were included in the study. IMA levels in those with active disease, those in remission, and healthy controls were compared. The correlations between IMA and other acute phase reactants were also assessed in the patient group. Results: Significantly higher levels of IMA were found in patients with active UC as compared to those in remission and controls (p < 0.001). Patients in remission and control subjects did not differ significantly in terms of IMA levels. Also, IMA correlated with C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, while it did not correlate with white blood cell count and platelet count. Conclusions: Our results suggest that IMA, a marker of oxidative stress, may be a useful parameter for assessing the disease activity in patients with ulcerative colitis.
