BACKGROUND: A decline in masticatory function may indicate brain dysfunction related to dementia, but the relationship between masticatory function and dementia risk remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether masticatory function is associated with the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. METHODS: Data were obtained from the nationwide prospective cohort study of randomly sampled community-dwelling Koreans aged ≥ 60 years. The 5,064 non-demented participants, whose number of chewing cycles per bite was assessed by clinical interview, were followed for 8 years with biennial assessments of cognitive performance and clinical diagnoses of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Structural brain magnetic resonance imaging was collected from a subset of cohort participants and their spouses for imaging analyses. RESULTS: Males who chewed ≥ 30 cycles/bite had faster decline in global cognition and memory function and were at higher risk for incident all-cause dementia (hazard ratio [HR], 2.91; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.18-7.18) and AD (HR, 3.22; 95% CI, 1.14-9.11) compared to males with less than 10 cycles/bite. Additionally, increased chewing cycles in males were associated with reduced brain volume, particularly in regions involved in compensatory cognitive control of mastication. There was no significant association between chewing cycles and the risk of dementia or brain volume in females. CONCLUSION: Older men who frequently chew their meals could be considered a notable population at risk for dementia who should be carefully assessed for their cognitive trajectories.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the orofacial myofunctional characteristics, masticatory performance and facial thermal profile in individuals with Parkinson disease (PD) and spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA3), comparing with healthy control ones. METHOD: Seventy-two participants aged between 30 and 85 years were evaluated and divided into PD, SCA3 and control groups. The assessments included clinical evaluation using the Orofacial Myofunctional Evaluation with Scores protocol (orofacial structures, mastication, swallowing and breathing aspects), masticatory performance assessed with a colour-changeable chewing gum and infrared thermography. The Kruskal-Wallis, one-way ANOVA and Wilcoxon tests were applied. RESULTS: With the exception of face and tongue, a difference was seen in the cheek, maxillomandibular relationship, lips, mentalis muscle and palate appearance and posture between patients and healthy control participants. Orofacial mobility, swallowing and masticatory function also scored higher in the control group. The SCA3 and PD groups required more time to eat the test-food and showed greater facial temperature asymmetries than the control one (p < 0.05). Masticatory performance measured by chewing gum did not differ. CONCLUSION: Facial temperature asymmetries, swallowing and masticatory function scores and the time needed by the SCA3 and PD groups to eat the test-food were different from healthy participants, drawing attention to the impaired orofacial functions in patients with neurodegenerative disorders.

BACKGROUND: Oral food processing is an important part of daily food intake. A major part of this process is mastication, which prepares a bolus of food for swallowing by mechanically crushing and grinding ingested food between the teeth using rhythmic movements. Masticatory dysfunction is common in the elderly and in some neurological disorders and can have serious negative health consequences. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effect of restricted mastication, achieved by experimentally reducing the duration of mastication, on masticatory patterns and subsequent swallowing function. METHODS: Thirty healthy men (25 ± 3 years old) were instructed to chew gum jelly with a free mastication duration (G100), a half and a quarter duration of G100. Masseter and digastric electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded to assess mastication and swallowing activity, respectively. In addition, the acceleration of the thyroid cartilage ridge was measured with an accelerometer. The root mean square (RMS) of muscle EMG activity in the masseter and digastric muscles, the number of masseter EMG bursts, time to peak and total duration of each masseter EMG burst, swallowing duration and laryngeal elevation latency were analysed. RESULTS: Restricting masticatory duration reduced the number of mastication cycles (p < .001), prolonged the time to peak (p < .001) and total duration of masseter EMG bursts (p < .001) and resulted in an overall increased RMS score of masseter muscle activity (p = .017). Furthermore, restricted masticatory duration led to a decrease in both swallowing duration (p = .001) and laryngeal elevation latency (p = .012), with a significant increase in the RMS score of digastric muscle activity (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Under the experimental conditions of restricted mastication, several adaptation features were observed, including changes in masticatory cycle characteristics and swallowing duration. Thus, although the overall masticatory efficiency was reduced, these adaptations allowed healthy individuals to still swallow safely.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to clarify the concept of vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) in prosthetic dentistry, addressing prevalent myths, and controversies regarding its clinical management and impact on the stomatognathic system. METHODS: This paper critically examines common beliefs about VDO alteration and its effects on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) through an extensive literature review and an international survey. The survey included 862 general dentists and prosthodontists and explored their approaches to altering VDO and their perceptions of the clinical implications. The literature review provided a thorough analysis of existing research on VDO modification techniques, the adaptability of the stomatognathic system, and the relationship between VDO changes and TMD. RESULTS: The survey revealed insights into dentists' perspectives on VDO, showing that while many practitioners test a new VDO due to concerns about patient adaptation, a significant majority observed that patients typically adjust well to a new VDO regardless of the technique used. The survey highlighted differing beliefs about the need for a gradual process and trial phase for VDO alteration, as well as the stability of modified VDO. Literature review suggests the stability and adaptability of VDO changes due to muscle adaptability and indicates no direct causal or curative link between VDO changes and TMD. Traditional methods for determining VDO in complete dentures may not be suitable for worn dentition, underscoring the need for tailored approaches. CONCLUSION: This paper suggests that the traditional belief in the need for a prolonged trial phase for VDO alterations may be reconsidered in light of evidence supporting the adaptability of the stomatognathic system. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between methods suitable for complete dentures and those for managing cases of worn dentition. The purported link between VDO alterations and TMD is also found to lack scientific evidence, highlighting the need for individualized patient care based on current evidence and clinical judgment.

AIM: This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles in adult women who underwent buccal fat removal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 20 healthy adult women with no temporomandibular dysfunction and normal occlusion, who were assessed before, 30, and 60 days after the surgery. The electromyographic signal of the masseter and temporal muscles was captured through mandibular tasks including rest, protrusion, right and left laterality, and maximum voluntary contraction with and without parafilm. The results obtained were tabulated and the Shapiro-Wilk normality test was performed, which indicated a normal distribution. Statistical analysis was performed using the repeated measures test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Significant differences were observed between time periods in maximum voluntary contraction for the left masseter muscle (p = 0.006) and in maximum voluntary contraction with parafilm for the right temporal (p = 0.03) and left temporal (p = 0.03) muscles. CONCLUSION: Bichectomy surgery did not modify the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles during the rest task but may have influenced variations in the electromyographic signal during different mandibular tasks after 60 days of surgery, suggesting compensatory adaptations and functional recovery. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Understanding the impact of buccal fat removal surgery on the stomatognathic system function provides insights into postoperative functional recovery and potential compensatory adaptations, guiding clinical management and rehabilitation strategies for patients undergoing such procedures. OBJECTIVE: to investigate the impact of the severity of microcephaly caused by the Zika virus (MCZ) on tooth eruption and orofacial structures of children. DESIGN: This case series study developed the research at the Mens Sana Rehabilitation Center, Arcoverde, Brazil. The study included 27 children diagnosed with MCZ. We performed the data collection in June 2018 through a questionnaire answered by the legal guardians, followed by a clinical examination of the children. The data were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney and Fisher's exact tests (p = 0.05). RESULTS: The final sample was composed of 20 children. Of these, 13 (35.0%) had severe microcephaly, 5 (30.0%) had altered sequence of tooth eruption, 10 (50.0%) had delayed eruption, and the mean number of decayed teeth was 2.3. The most identified orofacial changes were teeth grinding habit (65.0%), difficult chewing (50.0%), and non-nutritive sucking (50.0%). The Mann-Whitney test showed that the severity of microcephaly did not affect tooth eruption (p = 0.581). The Fisher's exact test showed that the severity of microcephaly was not associated with orofacial changes (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The severity of MCZ does not seem to influence changes in deciduous tooth eruption and the presence of orofacial anomalies.

The mechanical behavior of each type of pacifier on rigid structures and their various impacts on orofacial growth have yet to be discovered. The study aimed to evaluate the stress distribution over a child's palate by three types of pacifiers using finite element analysis and clinical and laboratory data. Modulus of elasticity was obtained from 30 specimens comprising 10 of each conventional (A), orthodontic (B), and breast-shaped (C) pacifiers. Tongue strength was assessed in eight 3-year-old children (kPa). A hemi-maxilla model was obtained from 2- to 3-year-old skull tomography, and the images of pacifiers A, B, and C were captured using 3D scanning. The Hypermesh® program generated a mesh of 6-node tetrahedral elements for applying forces in the X, Y, and Z directions to enable a nonlinear analysis. Pacifier B exhibited the highest values for distributed stress on the palate, followed by pacifier A. Pacifier B stimulated the maxilla forward and sideways. In contrast, pacifier A promoted a forward and upward load, favoring a more atresic palate. Pacifiers A and B tended to rotate in the sagittal plane, generating tensions in the anterior incisors and favoring the open bite. Pacifier C exhibited lateral expansion by stress induction over the mid-palatal suture with less influence on incisor inclination. Pacifiers showed different detrimental stress distributions on the palate. This information can be helpful for improving recommendations given to parents.

BACKGROUND: With the ageing process changes in the musculature of oro-facial structures take place, consequently there is a reduction in the strength and mobility of the lips, tongue and cheeks. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to correlate oro-facial structures and chewing and swallowing functions among a group of senior citizens and young adults and check the influence of lip and tongue pressure of these functions. METHODS: This is an observational, cross-sectional and analytical study. Thirty seniors with an average age of 67.13 years and 30 young adults with an average age of 22.03 years participated in the study. The Oro-facial Myofunctional Assessment Protocol with Scores for the Elderly and the Oro-facial Myofunctional Assessment Protocol with Expanded Scores were also used. The evaluation of the force of pressure of the lips and tip and dorsum of the tongue was carried out using the Biofeedback device Pró-Fono: Lip and Tongue Pressure. RESULTS: Young adults had a higher evaluation score for the aspect/posture of the face, cheeks, lips, mentalis muscle, tongue, mobility of lips, tongue, jaw and cheeks, chewing and swallowing functions, total time and chewing strokes, and tip pressure and dorsum of tongue. According to the Structural Equation Modelling, a direct relationship was found between the tongue dorsum pressure force and the swallowing function. CONCLUSION: With healthy ageing changes occurring in the appearance, posture and mobility of the lips, tongue, jaw and cheeks, with the seniors and reduced performance of chewing and swallowing functions.

INTRODUCTION: Myofunctional orofacial examination (MOE) is an important tool for the assessment of the stomatognathic system and orofacial functions, and the early diagnosis of orofacial myofunctional disorders. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to scan the literature and determine the most preferred test for myofunctional orofacial examination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature review was conducted to collect information. Pubmed and ScienceDirect database was explored by using keywords gained by MeSH (Medical Subject Headings). RESULTS: Fifty-six studies were retrived from the search and all of the studies were screened and evaluated regarding the subject, aim, conclusions and the orofacial myofunctional examination test they used. It has been observed that traditional evaluation and inspection methods have been replaced by newer and methodological approaches in recent years. CONCLUSIONS: Although the few tests used differ, 'Orofacial Examination Test With Scores' (OMES) was found to be the most preferred myofunctional orofacial evaluation method from ENT to cardiology.

Morphea en coup de sabre and progressive hemifacial atrophy are extremely rare connective tissue disorders causing facial deformity. In extreme cases, morphological disorders are accompanied by symptoms of a clear impairment of the stomatognathic system. The aetiology of the above-mentioned diseases is still unknown. Properly planned therapy in the field of maxillofacial orthopaedics makes it possible to correct the asymmetric pattern of hard tissue growth and thus enable rehabilitation. The task of augmentation techniques is the volumetric supplementation of tissue defects resulting from atrophic processes. The degree of destruction and the extent of changes determine the method of correction. Mild and moderate defects are treated mainly with biomaterials and autologous adipose tissue. The severe course of hemifacial atrophy and morphea en coup de sabre and the associated significant tissue atrophy necessitate the search for more complex methods of treatment. In this paper, we summarize the disturbances of the stomatognathic system in patients with craniofacial morphea, together with an analysis of current treatment options.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze published scientific evidence about the most common orofacial disorders in children with microcephaly associated with ZIKV infection. METHODS: Through a scoping review, we respond to the search question was formulated: "What are the orofacial alterations in children with microcephaly associated with ZIKV?" It was performed a search in PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Health Virtual Library. It was selected papers wrote in English, Portuguese, or Spanish. An evidence quality analysis was performed using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality classification. RESULTS: It was included 11 studies performed in the Brazilian Northeast region. The studies were carried out between 2018 and 2020. The main related alterations were delay in the tooth-eruption and deformation in the oral structures. CONCLUSION: The results observed in our work show moderate scientific evidence regarding the association of ZIKV with orofacial alterations in children with microcephaly due to the classifications of the quality of evidence of each one of the included studies. The main changes reported were in the chronology of tooth eruption, alteration in teeth, and oral structures.

Stroke is a neurological deficit of cerebrovascular origin that promotes physical impairments of adult individuals. The present study is aimed to demonstrate whether hemorrhagic stroke affects the maximum molar bite force. The prospective study carried in Centro Universitario Claretiano de Batatais, Brazil, determined the distribution of the sample into two groups: hemorrhagic stroke group (n=18, median age, 62.5 years) and disease-free group (n=18, median age, 62.0 years), with 10 men and 8 women in each group. Subjects were paired one-to-one (age and body mass index). The dynamometer was used to measure the maximum molar bite force (right and left). All analyses were performed with a significance level of 5% (Student's t-test). Differences were found on the right (p=0.048) and left (p=0.042) molar bite force, with lower bite force (both sides) in hemorrhagic stroke group. The study suggests that hemorrhagic stroke negatively affects the maximum molar bite force and necessitates changes in food intake to nutritious and softer consistency foods.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of oral rehabilitation with complete dentures on bite force and electromyography of the suprahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles, and their correlation with occlusal vertical dimension (OVD). The research questions were "What are the effects of rehabilitation with complete dentures on bite force and electromyography of suprahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles, and how are they correlated with OVD?" MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who are wearers of unsatisfactory removable complete dentures were attended in three sessions (T0, T1, and T2). At T0, while the patients still wore the old dentures, they were submitted to bite force and surface electromyographic exams of the suprahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles. These exams were repeated, and the OVD was measured while the patients wore their old and new prostheses, 30 days after insertion of the new prosthesis (T1). The exams were repeated 100 days after the insertion of the new prosthesis (T2). The data were submitted to the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation and linear regression, all with 5% significance. RESULTS: Fifteen patients participated in the study. No statistically significant difference was observed for bite force or electromyography in T0, T1, or T2. However, the correlation and regression tests showed important interactions between the OVD and maximum voluntary occlusal bite force, as well as the OVD and electromyography during deglutition for the suprahyoid muscles. CONCLUSION: Rehabilitation did not impact bite force nor the activity of the assessed muscles (electromyography). On the other hand, OVD was shown to be an important factor for bite force, and deglutition of water after rehabilitation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study shows what are the influences of rehabilitation on oral functions and reinforces the importance of corrected reestablishment of OVD because it has been found to be an important factor for bite force and electromyography during deglutition.

AIM: To evaluate the thermographic characteristics of oro-facial structures and submental triangle of participants with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), as well as to investigate its correlation with the anatomy, posture and functions of the oro-facial structures. METHOD: Eighteen patients diagnosed with OSA by polysomnography (OSA group; 57.4 ± 15.8 years) and 13 healthy participants screened for OSA (control group; 57.8 ± 18.1 years) were included. All participants answered to questionnaires for OSA and excessive daytime sleepiness, and were submitted to infrared image thermography analysis of facial regions of interest (ROIs), oro-facial myofunctional evaluation (OMES-E protocol) and masticatory performance. Statistical analysis included one-way ANOVA and Pearson/Spearman correlation test. RESULTS: Obstructive sleep apnoea group showed lower thermographic measures in many ROIs in the frontal and lateral views of the face, including the submental triangle region, and lower scores of aspect/posture and performance of oro-facial structures, as well lower total score of OMES-E evaluation (P < .05). Scores of aspect/posture and mobility were correlated with the temperature of some ROIs in the frontal and lateral views. CONCLUSION: Lower facial skin and submental triangle region temperatures, measured by infrared thermography, and a worse oro-facial myofunctional condition were identified in the group of individuals with OSA. The higher temperatures of the ROIs were correlated with the better status of aspect/posture and performance of the oro-facial myofunctional structures.

The number of neuroimaging studies on the brain and oral sensorimotor functions has increased recently. Behind the dazzling "brain maps," what does the neuroimaging evidence truly tell us? What can dentists learn from it to improve clinical practice? We summarise the pros and cons of applying magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based neuroimaging to study oral behaviours of the dental patients. This is a narrative review of previous neuroimaging research of oral functions, focusing on MRI-related studies of human subjects. MRI has gained popularity in dental research due to its non-invasive nature, its approachability and its versatility in quantifying a variety of brain signatures. We argue that MRI-based neuroimaging is suitable for investigating the association between the between-individual variations in brain structure (eg grey matter volume)/brain functions (eg brain activation) and oral behaviours of the patients. Two specific topics of the daily dental practice, mastication and dental fear and anxiety, are discussed to exemplify the potential of neuroimaging methods. The methodological and interpretive limitations of MRI techniques are highlighted, and most importantly, we emphasise that the neuroimaging findings should be carefully interpreted given these limitations. MRI-based neuroimaging techniques can provide a better evaluation of the association between the brain and stomatognathic functions, which could be pivotal to the evidence-based clinical management of dental patients.

BACKGROUND: The two-colour chewing test (TCCT) has been widely used for assessing oral mixing ability, a critical component of masticatory performance. Most studies focused on quantifying the evenness of colour distribution. It remained unknown if the variation of colour clustering was a valid index of oral mixing ability. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to investigate the oral mixing ability based on the spatial clusters quantified by variogram. METHODS: Fifty older people (15 male/35 female, age: 66.0 ± 7.8 years) were assessed for the TCCT and the colour-changeable chewing gum test (CCGT). For the CCGT, we quantified the degree of colour change (ΔE). For the TCCT, the highest peak in colour histogram (HP), the standard deviation of colour values (SDC) and the range of variogram from colour spatial distribution (VARG) were quantified. The participants were grouped according to the contacts of posterior teeth, as assessed by Eichner Index (EI). RESULTS: Highest peak, SDC and VARG showed statistically significant differences between the EI groups (two-tailed independent t test P < .05). Higher VARG (ie a lower degree of clustering) was significantly negatively correlated with ΔE (r = -.36, one-tailed P < .01). The binary logistic regression revealed that among the spatial indices (HP, SDC and VARG), only VARG achieved statistical significance in prediction to the EI group. Eliminating other indices was insignificant to the model performance. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that the averaged cluster sizes, quantified by variogram, are a valid index for quantifying the TCCT. Compared with other spatial indices, it had the best predictability to the condition of posterior contact.

BACKGROUND: Alteration in tongue mobility requires rehabilitation work through oral motor exercises. These exercises can be integrated with computer games to increase the patient's motivation during treatment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of tongue mobility on children's motor performance in a computer game reliant on lingual movements. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out with 16 children with altered tongue mobility and 16 children with normal tongue mobility. The subjects were between 8 and 12 years of age. They underwent a clinical evaluation of the tongue and performed an activity using an intra-oral joystick controlled by the tongue to play a simple computer game. The game consisted of targets appearing on the screen that the participants had to reach by moving the joystick control rod. Afterward, the participants answered a feedback questionnaire. Motor performance in the game, measured by the number of reached targets and by the time to reach the targets, was compared between groups and across directions of tongue movement and order of appearance of the targets. RESULTS: The group with altered tongue mobility presented a higher time to reach the target in the downward direction and in the first and last 12 targets and a lower number of targets reached in the left direction, upward direction, and in the first 12 targets than the control group. The direction of the movement influenced tongue performance in both groups. CONCLUSION: Children with altered tongue mobility exhibited a worse performance than those with normal tongue mobility.

RESUMO

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder resulting from the repetitive narrowing and collapse of the upper respiratory tract. The results of previous epidemiological studies confirm a significant impact of OSA on the health situation around the world. Untreated OSA is associated with many adverse health effects, such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, and daytime sleepiness. Excessive mortality of OSA patients, especially in men under 50 years of age, associated with advanced disease, obesity, cardiovascular complications, and a greater risk of road accidents, requires an urgent extension of the diagnostic-therapeutic database dealing with this problem. It is estimated that in the adult population, OSA occurs in 4% of men and in 2% of women. In recent years, intraoral devices have become an increasingly common method of OSA and snoring treatment. Nevertheless, the use of devices producing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) remains the most effective treatment method. However, intraoral devices have the advantage of not requiring a source of electricity and are less troublesome in everyday use. Intraoral devices are well tolerated by the majority of patients, and their therapeutic efficacy is confirmed. Since such devices become commoner, the purpose of this work was to present the procedures, indications, and recommendations involved with intraoral devices while taking into consideration a variety of dental conditions. The side effects of the use of intraoral devices and their influence on the entire stomatognathic system were also described.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the oral functionality and the oral sensorimotor alterations are associated with oropharyngeal dysphagia in community-dwelling older persons and long-term care older residents. METHODS: An exploratory study with 265 independent older persons of the southern state of Brazil. The diagnosis of dysphagia, as well as the condition of the oral sensorimotor system, was assessed by a speech-language therapist and the oral health status by a dentist. Poisson Regression with robust variance was used to calculate the crude and adjusted Prevalence Ratios (PR) and their respective confidence intervals of 95%. RESULTS: The mean age was 73.5 (±8.9) years, women represented 59.2% of the sample. The frequency of dysphagia in the studied population was 45.3% (n = 120), being more frequent in the long-term care older residents (62.5%; n = 75) than in the community-dwelling older persons (37.5%; n = 45). Individuals with four or more oral sensorimotor alterations (PR = 2.01; 95% CI 1.27-3.18), as well as those who presented a non-functional oral status (PR = 1.61; 95% CI 1.02-2.54) presented a higher frequency of dysphagia. Subgroup analysis indicates the same trend of results, when stratified by community-dwelling older persons and long-term older residents. CONCLUSION: A non-functional oral health status and oral sensorimotor alterations are associated with a higher prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia.

GOAL: The aim of this study was to assess temporomandibular joint dysfunction in patients with stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total of 100 participants, 50 healthy and 50 who had stroke, were recruited into this study. Digital caliper and algometer were used to assess temporomandibular joint range of motion and masticatory muscle pressure pain threshold. Labial commissure angle measurement was used for the assessment of facial paralysis severity. Fonseca questionnaire was used for temporomandibular joint dysfunction assessment and categorization. In addition, dominant mastication shift was measured by the question that asks the pre and poststroke dominant mastication side. FINDINGS: In intergroup comparison, significant decrease was found in all temporomandibular range of motion parameters in favor of stroke group (P < .05). Despite the fact that no significant difference was found between groups for the pain threshold in masticatory muscles except for middle part of the left temporalis muscle, values were higher in healthy group (P > .05). As a result of intergroup examination of labial commissure angle degree, Fonseca questionnaire score, it was found that labial commissure angle and Fonseca questionnaire scores were higher in stroke group (P < .05). Intragroup examination of patients with stroke showed that dominant mastication side shift was seen in patients with stroke (P < .05). CONCLUSION: It was concluded that, temporomandibular joint dysfunction prevalence was higher in stroke group compared with healthy group and use of modalities specific to temporomandibular joint dysfunction treatment would be beneficial.
