This review offers a detailed examination of the current landscape of radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic field (EMF) assessment tools, ranging from spectrum analyzers and broadband field meters to area monitors and custom-built devices. The discussion encompasses both standardized and non-standardized measurement protocols, shedding light on the various methods employed in this domain. Furthermore, the review highlights the prevalent use of mobile apps for characterizing 5G NR radio network data. A growing need for low-cost measurement devices is observed, commonly referred to as "sensors" or "sensor nodes", that are capable of enduring diverse environmental conditions. These sensors play a crucial role in both microenvironmental surveys and individual exposures, enabling stationary, mobile, and personal exposure assessments based on body-worn sensors, across wider geographical areas. This review revealed a notable need for cost-effective and long-lasting sensors, whether for individual exposure assessments, mobile (vehicle-integrated) measurements, or incorporation into distributed sensor networks. However, there is a lack of comprehensive information on existing custom-developed RF-EMF measurement tools, especially in terms of measuring uncertainty. Additionally, there is a need for real-time, fast-sampling solutions to understand the highly irregular temporal variations EMF distribution in next-generation networks. Given the diversity of tools and methods, a comprehensive comparison is crucial to determine the necessary statistical tools for aggregating the available measurement data.

Fifth generation (5G) wireless communication is being rolled out around the world. In this work, the latest radio frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure measurement results on commercial 28-GHz band 5G base stations (BSs) deployed in the urban area of Tokyo, Japan, are presented. The measurements were conducted under realistic traffic conditions with a 5G smartphone and using both omnidirectional and horn antennas. First and foremost, in all cases, the electric-field (E-field) intensity is much lower (<-38 dB) than the exposure limits. The E-field intensities for traffic-off cases do not show any significant difference between the two antennas with the maximum being 3.6 dB. For traffic-on cases, the omnidirectional antenna can undesirably capture the radio wave from the smartphone in some cases, resulting in a 7-13 dB higher E-field intensity than that using the horn antenna. We also present comparative results between 4G long term evolution BSs and sub-6-GHz band and 28-GHz band 5G BSs and provide recommendations on acquiring meaningful EMF exposure data. This work is a further step toward the standardization of the measurement method regarding quasi-millimeter/millimeter wave 5G BSs.

RESUMO

Radon is a naturally occurring noble radioactive gas that poses significant health risks, particularly lung cancer, due to its colorless, odorless, and tasteless nature, which makes detection challenging without formal testing. It is found in soil, rock, and water, and it infiltrates indoor environments, necessitating regulatory standards and guidelines from organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the World Health Organization, and the Occupational Health and Safety Agency to mitigate exposure. In this paper, we present various methods and instruments for radon assessment in occupational and environmental settings. Discussion on long- and short-term monitoring, including grab sampling, radon dosimetry, and continuous real-time monitoring, is provided. The comparative analysis of detection techniques-active versus passive-is highlighted from real-time data and long-term exposure assessment, including advances in sensor technology, data processing, and public awareness, to improve radon exposure evaluation techniques.

This study reports the performance of 7 types of consumer grade passive Electronic Radon Integrating Monitors, ERIM (AlphaE, AER Plus, Canary, Corentium Pro, Radon Scout Home, Ramon and Wave) and passive etched track radon detectors. All monitors and passive radon detectors were exposed side by side for 2 periods of 3 months under controlled conditions in the UKHSA radon chamber and in a stainless steel container to an average radon concentration of 4781 Bq m-3and 166 Bq m-3, respectively. The performance of each individual monitor was compared with Atmos 12DPX and AlphaGUARD P30 reference instruments. The performance of the monitors was evaluated by estimating the biased, precision and measurement errors of each type. It was found that UKHSA passive radon detectors showed excellent performance (measurement error < 10%) at both higher and lower exposures. The AlphaE, Canary and Ramon showed excellent performance, with measurement error <10%, when they were exposed to radon concentrations between 4000 Bq m-3and 6000 Bq m-3in the UKHSA radon chamber. However, when the monitors were exposed to radon levels below the UK radon Action Level of 200 Bq m-3, the only ERIM which had a measurement error <10% was the Radon Scout Home. All other monitors showed a significant decrease in their performance with measurement errors ranging between 20% and 50%. The calibration factor, which is the ratio between the measured value (background is subtracted) and the reference value, was also studied. It was found that the calibration factors of individual monitors changed significantly. Calibration measurements in 2019 and in 2023 found that the percentage change varied between -46% and +63%. This shows the importance of initial and regular calibration, and maintenance of the monitors.

Kansas State University (KSU) Engineering Extension conducted an abridged evaluation of eight consumer grade digital radon monitors. Using the KSU secondary radon chamber, these devices were exposed to three different radon concentrations for 7 d in average household temperature and relative humidity conditions. The three different radon concentration ranges used were: 12.8 pCi L-1to 15.5 pCi L-1(473.6 Bq m-3-573.5 Bq m-3), 27.7 pCi L-1to 29.4 pCi L-1(1024.9-10 857.8 Bq m-3), and ambient room level average radon concentration of 0.6 pCi L-1(22.2 Bq m-3). The American National Standards Institute/American Academy of Radon Scientists and Technologists Performance Specifications for Instrumentation Systems Designed to Measure Radon Gas in Air (ANSI/AARST MS-PC) (ANSI/AARST MS-PC 2022Performance Specifications for Instrumentation Systems Designed to Measure Radon Gas in Air(AARST Radon Standards)) minimum performance metrics were used to evaluate the accuracy and precision of each model type for each radon concentration tested. The eight different device models performed within the 0 ± 25% requirement for the individual percent error (IPE) for radon concentrations between 27.7 pCi L-1and 29.4 pCi L-1(1024.9-10 857.8 Bq m-3). For radon concentrations between 12.8 pCi L-1and 15.5 pCi L-1(444-592 Bq m-3) seven of the eight monitors fell within the IPE requirement and for ambient room radon concentrations six of the eight monitors fell within the IPE requirement for the ANSI/AARST MS-PC minimum performance requirement (ANSI/AARST MS-PC 2022Performance Specifications for Instrumentation Systems Designed to Measure Radon Gas in Air(AARST Radon Standards)) ranges. All eight device models fell within the ± 15% ANSI/AARST MS-PC minimum performance requirement (ANSI/AARST MS-PC 2022Performance Specifications for Instrumentation Systems Designed to Measure Radon Gas in Air(AARST Radon Standards)) coefficient of variation (CV) range for radon concentrations between 12.8 pCi L-1and 15.5 pCi L-1(444-592 Bq m-3) and for radon concentrations between 27.7 pCi L-1and 29.4 pCi L-1(1024.9-10 857.8 Bq m-3). In the future, evaluating the performance of these models over time to observe their long term accuracy and precision is anticipated.

A dosimeter should ideally be calibrated in a reference field with similar energy and doserate to that which the dosimeter is being used to measure. Environments around nuclear reactors and radiation therapy facilities have high-energy photons with energies exceeding that of60Co gamma rays, and controlling exposure to these photons is important. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency and National Metrology Institute of Japan have high-energy reference fields with energies above several megaelectronvolts for different types of accelerators. Their reference fields have different fluence-energy distributions. In this study, the energy dependencies of the two-cavity ionization chambers, which are often used by secondary standard laboratories, were experimentally and computationally evaluated for each high-energy field. These results agreed well within the relative expanded uncertainties (k= 2), and their capabilities for air kerma measurements in each high-energy reference field were confirmed. Therefore, the capabilities of the air-kerma measurements were verified in the two high-energy reference fields.

Following a radiological or nuclear (RN) event, rapid measurement of131I in members of the public is of utmost importance, and much equipment is needed for a high throughput. In this study, three gamma cameras (GCs), two thyroid uptake meters (TUMs) and one whole-body counter (WBC) were calibrated for activity measurements of131I in the thyroid. Minimum detectable activity was derived for the GCs, the TUMs and the WBC giving that a committed effective dose (CED) in the interval 2.0-85µSv, 13-700µSv and 0.52-6.4µSv, and thyroid absorbed doses in the interval 0.075-2.1 mGy, 0.48-17 mGy, and 0.020-0.15 mGy, respectively, can be assessed for children, adolescents, and adults. These numbers are based on 10 min measurement, performed at 1, 3 and 7 d after intake, and the CED includes intake by ingestion and inhalation of aerosols Type F, with an activity median aerodynamic diameter of 1µm. For a fractional signal loss of 63% due to dead time, a CED up to 2.0, 84 and 3.6 Sv and thyroid absorbed dose up to 47 Gy, 2000 Gy and 88 Gy for the three systems, respectively, can be assessed for children and intake by ingestion as a worst-case scenario in terms of CED, measured 7 d after intake. This study demonstrates the potential and limitations of using equipment readily available at larger hospitals for estimation of131I content in thyroid, which could increase the measurement capability following an RN event.

Radiopharmacy staff members are subject to extremity radiation doses, particularly to the fingertips. Dosemeters, such as, thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) are currently used for monitoring fingertip doses. This study aimed to use real-time dosemeters to monitor radiopharmacy extremity doses to identify specific procedural steps associated with higher fingertip doses and, subsequently, reduce dose through promotion of optimised radiation protection practises. Five radiopharmacy operators were monitored using an ED3 active extremity dosemeter with a detector attached to each tip of the index fingers. Dose rate and accumulated dose data were matched to the handled radioactivity data, of99mTc-labelled radiopharmaceuticals only, with the dose per activity (µSv MBq-1) calculated for each step. Once baseline dose data was established, an educational session identified technique adjustments toward improved radiation protection. A subsequent monitored session was undertaken with the dose data compared to quantify changes in operator doses. Radiopharmacy steps which significantly contributed to extremity doses were identified. The average accumulated dose per activity across all procedural steps for the99mTc-labelled radiopharmaceuticals for all operators before the educational session was 0.042 ± 0.045µSv MBq-1and 0.042 ± 0.041µSv MBq-1(n= 89) for non-dominant and dominant index fingertips, respectively, and 0.030 ± 0.044µSv MBq-1and 0.031 ± 0.032µSv MBq-1(n= 97), respectively, afterwards. Overall, there was an average 40.7% reduction in the total extremity dose received after the educational session. Real-time electronic extremity dosemeters for monitoring radiopharmacy extremity dose presented as a useful tool for incorporation into radiation protection education and training, towards optimised radiopharmacy technique.

Radiological monitoring is fundamental for compliance with radiological protection policies in the aftermath of radiological events, such as nuclear accidents, terrorism, and out-of-commission uranium mines. An effective strategy for radiation monitoring is to use radiation detectors coupled with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), enabling for quicker surveillance of large areas without involving the need of human presence in the target area. The main aim of this study was to formulate the parameters for a UAV flight strategy in preparation for future field measurements using Geiger-Muller Counters (GMC) and Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) spectrometers. As a proof of concept, the prepared flight strategy will be used to survey out-of-commission uranium mines in northern Portugal. Procedures to assure the calibration of the CZT and verification of the GMCs were conducted, as well as a sensitivity analysis of the sensors considering different acquisition times, distance to source, and detector response time. This article reports specific parameters, such as UAV distance to ground, time of exposition, speed, and the methodology to perform the identification and calculate the activity of possible radioactive sources. An effective flight strategy is also presented, aiming to use radiation detectors coupled with UAVs to undertake extensive monitoring of areas with enhanced levels of environmental radiation, which is of prime importance due to the lasting hazardous effects of enhanced environmental radiation in the nearby ecosystem and population.

RESUMO

We report on the retrofitting of a standard DP2 environmental radiation monitor replacing the photomultiplier tube with a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM). The use of a SiPM has several advantages for a hand-held radiation monitor, including convenient low-voltage operation and physical robustness. We report the detection efficiency and alpha/beta discrimination performance of the modified probe compared with an unmodified version.

People are increasingly exposed to electromagnetic radiation with the rapid development of technologies such as broadcasting and mobile communication system. There is a concern that long-term exposure at low levels may be associated with various non-specific physical symptoms and ecological effects on animals and plants. It is extremely important to measure and analyze the electromagnetic radiation levels in order to protect people from the possible effects of electromagnetic radiation. A large-scale assessment of the effects of electromagnetic radiation on health or on ecology requires the ambient electromagnetic radiation levels over areas too vast to cover with conventional measurement methods. In this article, detailed information about the measurement tools and measurement method are given. The electromagnetic radiation exposure levels were measured on the main streets in the dense urban areas of Beijing, the capital of China. We apply ordinary kriging as an interpolation technique to assess the electromagnetic radiation exposure in large outdoor areas based on car-mounted measurements along the surrounding roads. The electromagnetic radiation exposure levels for larger areas can be investigated visually on the electromagnetic pollution map, which can assist decision makers by identifying the hotspots.

The detection of internal contamination may be carried out by direct or indirect methods. The lung counting technique using an array of High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors is one of such direct detection methods. It is known from the literature that the estimation of activity by organ counting can lead to erroneous results if an amount of activity is possessed by an adjacent organ. In the case of HPGe-based lung monitoring, the estimation could be misleading if the activity is possessed by the liver, which is a proximal organ. In such cases the measured activity should be modified using cross-talk coefficients which account for the contribution from adjacent organs. The determination of cross-talk coefficients for 241Am was carried out by placing the detectors over inactive lungs of an Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory phantom when the source activity was contained in the liver and vice versa. A calibration matrix was formulated with calibration coefficients as diagonal elements and cross-talk coefficients as off-diagonal elements. The measured activities may be modified by matrix multiplication with the inverse of the calibration matrix to nullify the contribution from adjacent organs. The current work has empirically determined the fitting equations which relate calibration and cross-talk coefficients for lungs and liver measurement geometries with muscle-equivalent chest wall thickness (MEQ-CWT) values. The values of these coefficients were determined for an average MEQ-CWT of 1.77 cm for lungs and 1.33 cm for liver. The calculations showed that the activity contribution from liver to lungs was 29% higher than that of lungs to liver. A verification exercise was conducted to demonstrate this method. For the given calibration source, the percent overestimation was reduced for lung activity, while the liver activity was slightly underestimated. In the case of old exposure follow-up monitoring cases, the 241Am activity built up in liver could interfere with the lung monitoring results and this method using the calibration matrix may be used for estimation of more accurate results.

Accurate measurement of unattached radon progeny is important for dose evaluation of radon exposure. For quality control of field surveys, a series of comparison measurements were carried out using three commercial unattached radon progeny monitors in real environments as well as in a radon chamber. The results show that the radon equilibrium equivalent concentrations (EECs) of different monitors agree very well, mostly within ±3.0% where there is no thoron progeny interference in the radon chamber. However, the unattached fraction of radon progeny is not so consistent, and the relative difference is 3.3% ~ 39.5% in different environments. The unattached fraction of radon progeny is affected by aerosol concentration. Anomalously high unattached fraction was found in the environment with extremely high humidity and low aerosol concentration. For accurate measurement of unattached radon progeny, specific attention should be paid to the collection efficiency of unattached radon progeny and the interference of attached radon progeny on a wire screen.

The results obtained in a measurement campaign concerning internal contamination by the gamma-emitting radionuclides of a large number of individuals are presented in this work. The aim is to assess the effectiveness of the spectrometric method in an emergency response following a nuclear power plant accident or a spread of radionuclides in the atmosphere due to an act of terrorism. An HPGe portable spectrometer, deployed in a collective protection apparatus, was used for both whole-body and thyroid measurements. An adult bottle mannequin absorption (BOMAB) and thyroid phantoms were used to evaluate the detector performance. The BOMAB phantom was provided by the Italian Institute of Ionizing Radiation Metrology (INMRI) for the ENEA intercomparison exercise. Thyroid phantoms were provided by the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre for the 'Child and Adult Thyroid Monitoring After Reactor Accident' European intercomparison exercise. The instrument performance was further evaluated by collecting spectral data from healthy volunteers, using acquisition times of 180 s and 100 s, respectively, for the whole-body and thyroid measurements. The detector showed good accuracy in quantifying radionuclide activities in the adult BOMAB and in the thyroids of persons of all ages. The proposed method allows us to detect in vivo activity leading to a committed effective dose E(50) and committed thyroid equivalent doses H T greater than 2 mSv due to all gamma-emitting fission products, if the scan is performed within five days after intake. Assuming, for instance, an acute inhalation of 137Cs and 131I, the obtained detection limit values for adults lead to a E(50) value equal to 0.08 mSv and an H T value of 0.27 mSv. The E(50) and H T values show that the proposed method can be successfully used when the dose assessment must be rapidly performed for a large number of individuals in the eventuality of the scenarios previously mentioned.

When responding to nuclear and radiological emergencies, rapid and on-site detections of possible internal radioactive contaminants are required for early dose estimation and medical triage. Nasal swab analysis is an effective method to provide valuable information for early and fast estimates of alpha radionuclide inhalation intakes and resultant doses. In this study, to improve the quality of nasal swab measurements, a specialised double-detector alpha counter was designed. Various parameters including swab materials, sample pre-preparation, angle-dependence and vacuum dependence were investigated to optimise the reliability and convenience of the nasal swab method. An improved procedure of direct nasal swab measurement was eventually established, which could be used to obtain early data for initial dose assessment during the first response of nuclear and radiological emergencies.

An online monitoring technology of Pu-239 aerosol based on aerosol direct introduction device, membrane desolvation nebuliser and ICP-MS was established for workplaces of reprocessing plants. Briefly, 0.8 l min-1 Pu-239 aerosol from the workplace was introduced into the aerosol direct introduction device where the air was replaced by Argon, and then the aerosol was introduced into the ICP-MS for measurement. To determine the activity of Pu-239 aerosol, 1.10E-3 Bq ml-1 Pu-242 standard solution generated by a membrane desolvation nebuliser was used. The introduction efficiency of the nebuliser was determined by sampling the aerosol generated from the nebuliser with Lead Standard Solution by glass fiber filter, which was (26.82 ± 3.33) %. The mass bias between Pu-239 and Pu-242 for the ICP-MS measurement was determined by Pu-239 and Pu-242 standard solutions generated by the nebuliser, and mass discrimination correction factor for Pu-239/Pu-242 was 0.972 ± 0.010. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of this system were calculated according to the ISO 20 899:2018, which were 2.24E-05 Bq m-3 and 7.45E-05 Bq m-3 with 1 min measurement. The main interference which was from U-238 was determined by U-238 standard solution generated by the nebuliser, and the interferences of U-238 to 239 was (8.50 ± 1.05) E-05. According to the counts of U-238 from several workplaces of reprocessing plant where this system was tested, 239 counts rate from the interferences of U-238 of those workplaces were at the same level of the system background counts, which meant that the LOD above was suitable for those places.

Radiological data such as ambient dose equivalent rate obtained from radiation monitoring in Metro Manila are useful for the detection of any anomalous increase of radiation dose rate levels due to nuclear or radiological emergencies. In this study, ambient dose equivalent rates were measured in different locations in Metro Manila using a portable NaI(Tl) scintillation survey meter to determine the background radiation levels within the capital. Ambient dose equivalent rates measured range from 32.7 ± 2.2 to 59.3 ± 8.7 nanosieverts per hour (nSv/h) with computed mean and median values of 41.7 and 39.6 nSv/h, respectively. These values were lower than the Philippines' average dose rate which is 52 nanograys per hour (nGy/h). No significant trend was also observed in the monthly variation of ambient dose equivalent rate for most locations, with the dose rates being relatively consistent throughout a year. No significant trend was further observed in the monthly variation of ambient dose equivalent rate for the whole Metro Manila. Data obtained in this study were used to develop a dose rate distribution map of Metro Manila which could be used as a baseline reference of emergency responders for environmental radioactivity monitoring during nuclear or radiological emergencies that may affect Metro Manila.

The lattice parameters and unit-cell orientation of an SrLaAlO4 crystal have been determined by means of energy-dispersive X-ray Laue diffraction (EDLD) using a pnCCD detector coupled to a columnar structure CsI(Tl) scintillator in the energy range between 40 and 130 keV. By exploiting the high quantum efficiency (QE) achieved by this combined detection system for hard X-rays, a large number of Bragg reflections could be recorded by the relatively small detector area, allowing accurate and fast determination of the lattice parameters and the moduli of the structure factors. The experiment was performed on the energy-dispersive diffraction (EDDI) beamline at the BESSY II synchrotron using a pnCCD detector with 128 × 128 pixels. Since the energies and positions of the Laue peaks can be recorded simultaneously by the pnCCD system, the tetragonal structure of the investigated specimen was determined without any prior information. The unit-cell parameters and the angles between the lattice vectors were evaluated with an accuracy of better than 0.7%, while the structure-factor moduli of the reflections were determined with a mean deviation of 2.5% relative to the theoretical values.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the accuracy of DoseMap™ software as compared to gafchromic film in real clinical practices. BACKGROUND: The radiation exposure from cardiovascular procedures could expose patients to potential risk of cancer and/or skin injury. New tools like Dosemap software were developed to estimate the patient skin dose in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. However, little data are available to validate this estimation of patient radiation skin dose. METHODS: This is a prospective cross-sectional study comparing the peak skin dose (PSD) measured by gafchromic film used as reference with an estimated PSD given by Dosemap software, in patients with BMI > 30 kg/m2 undergoing elective diagnostic and/or therapeutic interventional cardiology procedures, from April 2016 to December 2016, at the Brest University Hospital Centre, France. RESULTS: After four exclusions of patients for poor quality of gafchromic films, 90 patients were included, with 58 angiography (67.4%), 14 percutaneous interventions (16.3%), and 14 both (16.3%). The median PSDDosemap and PSDFilm were similar with 157 mGy [IQR: 99; 273] versus 158 mGy [IQR: 101; 295] (P = 0.65), respectively, with an excellent correlation (r = 0.95). The comparison between cumulative air kerma and PSDFilm was different 366 mGy [IQR: 246; 575] versus 158 mGy [IQR: 101; 295] (P < 0.01) with moderate correlation (r = 0.79). No correlation was found between the dose area product and PSDFilm (r = 0.51). CONCLUSION: DoseMap is an effective and valid method as compared to gafchromic films to estimate PSDs during interventional cardiologic procedures.

This paper describes the calculation of the response of the most common types of radiation detectors that were used within the first few weeks after the Chernobyl accident to determine the activity of 131I in the thyroids of Belarusian subjects of an epidemiologic study of thyroid cancer. The radiation detectors, which were placed against the necks of the subjects, measured the exposure rates due to the emission of gamma rays resulting from the radioactive decay of 131I in their thyroids. Because of the external and internal radioactive contamination of the monitored subjects, gamma radiation from many radionuclides in various locations contributed to the exposure rates recorded by the detectors. To estimate accurately the contribution from gamma rays emitted from various internal and external parts of the body, the calibration factors of the radiation detectors, expressed in kBq per µR h- 1, were calculated, by means of Monte Carlo simulation, for external irradiation from unit activities of 17 radionuclides located on 19 parts of the body, as well as for internal irradiation from the same 17 radionuclides in the lungs, from caesium radionuclides distributed uniformly in the whole body, and from 131I in the thyroid. The calculations were performed for six body sizes, representative of the age range of the subjects. In a companion paper, the levels of external and internal contamination of the body were estimated for a variety of exposure conditions. The results presented in the two papers were combined to calculate the 131I activities in the thyroids of all 11,732 Belarusian study subjects of an epidemiologic study of thyroid cancer and, in turn, their thyroid doses.
