RESUMO

A novel species of the genus Moraxella was isolated from an ocular swab from a cow with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. 16S rRNA gene sequencing suggested this species was Moraxella bovis (99.59 % nucleotide identity). Average nucleotide identity was calculated using a draft whole genome sequence of this strain compared with type strains of closely related Moraxella species and results established that it represents a new species. The genome size was 2 006 474 nucleotides and the G+C content was 42.51 mol%. The species could not be identified by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry using a commercial database, confirming the novelty of the strain. We propose the name Moraxella oculi sp. nov. for this new species. The type strain is Tifton1T and has been deposited into the American Type Culture Collection (TSD-373T) and the National Collection of Type Cultures (NCTC), UK Health Security Agency (NCTC 14942T).

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics and related functional pathways of the gut microbiota in patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN) through metagenomic sequencing technology. METHODS: We enrolled individuals with primary IgAN, including patients with normal and abnormal renal function. Additionally, we recruited healthy volunteers as the healthy control group. Stool samples were collected, and species and functional annotation were performed through fecal metagenome sequencing. We employed linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) analysis to identify significantly different bacterial microbiota and functional pathways. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis was used to annotate microbiota functions, and redundancy analysis (RDA) was performed to analyze the factors affecting the composition and distribution of the gut microbiota. RESULTS: LEfSe analysis revealed differences in the gut microbiota between IgAN patients and healthy controls. The characteristic microorganisms in the IgAN group were classified as Escherichia coli, with a significantly greater abundance than that in the healthy control group (p < 0.05). The characteristic microorganisms in the IgAN group with abnormal renal function were identified as Enterococcaceae, Moraxella, Moraxella, and Acinetobacter. KEGG functional analysis demonstrated that the functional pathways of the microbiota that differed between IgAN patients and healthy controls were related primarily to bile acid metabolism. CONCLUSIONS: The status of the gut microbiota is closely associated not only with the onset of IgAN but also with the renal function of IgAN patients. The characteristic gut microbiota may serve as a promising diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target for IgAN.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is an ocular disease that affects bovines and has significant economic and health effects worldwide. Gram negative bacteria Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi are its main etiological agents. Antimicrobial therapy against IBK is often difficult in beef and dairy herds and, although vaccines are commercially available, their efficacy is variable and dependent on local strains. The aim of this study was to analyze for the first time the genomes of Uruguayan clinical isolates of M. bovis and M. bovoculi. The genomes were de novo assembled and annotated; the genetic basis of fimbrial synthesis was analyzed and virulence factors were identified. A 94% coverage in the reference genomes of both species, and more than 80% similarity to the reference genomes were observed. The mechanism of fimbrial phase variation in M. bovis was detected, and the tfpQ orientation of these genes confirmed, in an inversion region of approximately 2.18kb. No phase variation was determined in the fimbrial gene of M. bovoculi. When virulence factors were compared between strains, it was observed that fimbrial genes have 36.2% sequence similarity. In contrast, the TonB-dependent lactoferrin/transferrin receptor exhibited the highest percentage of amino acid similarity (97.7%) between strains, followed by cytotoxins MbxA/MbvA and the ferric uptake regulator. The role of these virulence factors in the pathogenesis of IBK and their potential as vaccine components should be explored.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is the most important eye disease in ruminants worldwide. Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi can form biofilm and are frequently isolated from affected animals. Antimicrobials are used worldwide to treat clinical cases of IBK, although they have limited success in clearing the infection. Therefore, photodynamic therapy using porphyrins as photosensitizing molecules is an alternative method to eliminate microorganisms, including biofilms. We evaluated the antibacterial activity of a zinc(II) metalloporphyrin (ZnTMeP) against M. bovis and M. bovoculi biofilms since this compound can efficiently inactivate planktonic Moraxella spp. This study was carried out with two reference strains of Moraxella spp. (M. bovis: ATCC® 10900 and M. bovoculli: ATCC® BAA1259). The antibacterial activity of 4.0 µM of the ZnTMeP porphyrin was evaluated on forming and consolidate biofilms with three 30-min cycles of white-light exposure for three days. The ZnTMeP porphyrin reduced M. bovis and M. bovoculi biofilm formation. In addition, ZnTMeP partially destroyed consolidated M. bovoculi biofilms in the second white-light irradiation cycle, although the porphyrin had no effect against the consolidated biofilm of M. bovis. Despite the biofilm still not being completely inactivated, our findings are promising and encourage further experiments using the phototherapy protocol.

An aerobic, haemolytic, Gram-negative and rod-shaped bacterial strain ZY171148T was isolated from the lung of a dead goat with respiratory disease in Southwest China. The strain grew at 24-39 °C, at pH 6.0-9.0 and in the presence of 0.5-2.0% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain belongs to the genus Moraxella. The nucleotide sequence similarity analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed that the strain has the highest similarity of 98.1% to Moraxella (M.) caprae ATCC 700019 T. Phylogenomic analysis of 800 single-copy protein sequences indicated that the strain is a member of the genus Moraxella and forms a separated branch on the Moraxella phylogenetic tree. The strain exhibited the highest orthologous average nucleotide identity (OrthoANI) and average amino acid identity (AAI) values of 77.0 and 77.9% to M. nasibovis CCUG 75921T and M. ovis CCUG 354T, respectively. The strain shared the highest digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value of 26.2% to M. osloensis CCUG 350T. The genome G + C content of strain ZY171148T was 42.6 mol%. The strain had C18:1 ω9c (41.7%), C18:0 (11.2%), C16:0 (14.1%) and C12:0 3OH (9.7%) as the predominant fatty acids and CoQ-8 as the major respiratory quinone. The strain contained phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, cardiolipin, dilysocardiolipin, monolysocardiolipin and phosphatidic acid as the major polar lipids. ß-haemolysis was observed on Columbia blood agar. All results confirmed that strain ZY171148T represents a novel species of the genus Moraxella, for which the name Moraxella haemolytica sp. nov. is proposed, with strain ZY171148T = CCTCC AB 2021471T = CCUG 75920T as the type strain.

Artificial intelligence (AI) was developed to distinguish cattle by their muzzle patterns and identify early cases of disease, including infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). It was tested on 870 cattle in four locations, with 170 developing IBK. The AI identified 169 of the 170 cases prior to their identification by veterinarians, and another 17 cases that remained free of IBK signs (sensitivity = 99.4%, specificity = 97.6%). These results indicate the AI can detect emerging IBK cases by muzzle images very early in the disease process and be used as an intervention tool in the prevention of IBK outbreaks.

The epidemiology of Moraxella species bloodstream infection (BSI) is poorly defined due to their rarity. We sought to determine the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of Moraxella species BSI in a large Australian population. All Moraxella species BSIs in patients admitted to Queensland (population estimate 5 million) public health facilities between 2000 and 2019 and submitted to Queensland pathology laboratory-based surveillance were included. Clinical and hospitalisation data were matched with laboratory-based surveillance data. Incidence rate ratios (IRR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. In total, 375 incident Moraxella species BSI occurred during 86 million person-years of surveillance, with an annualised age and sex standardised incidence of 4.3 per million residents. Isolates were most commonly identified as M. catarrhalis (n = 128; 34%) and community-associated (n = 225; 60%). Incidence was highest in infants, with increasing age associated with lower incidence rate. Males were at higher risk (incidence 2.9 vs. 2.0 per million, IRR1.4; 95% CI, 1.2-1.8), this was most pronounced at age extremes. Two-thirds of adults and 43% of children with Moraxella BSI had at least one comorbid illness. When compared to infections in adults, children were more likely to have community-associated disease, and a head and neck source focus of infection. The all-cause 30-day case-fatality rate was 4% (15/375) and this was significantly higher among adults (14/191; 7% vs 1/183; 1%; p < 0.001). Our findings demonstrate the low burden of Moraxella species BSI in a state-wide cohort, for which young children have the highest risk.

This is the first study of the genetic diversity of Moraxella spp. Isolates were detected in an Eye Hospital in the City of Buenos Aires. Due to the high frequency of Moraxella spp. observed in corneal abscesses, we decided to validate their identification at the species level, determine their drug susceptibility and perform molecular subtyping. Seventeen (17) isolates obtained from corneal abscesses were evaluated. The identification was carried out using a combination of biochemical tests and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Of these isolates, 88.2% were identified as Moraxella lacunata, and 11.8% as Moraxella nonliquefaciens. Molecular subtyping was performed using the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) technique. All isolates were typable and thirteen digestion patterns were identified. Based on the obtained results, the PFGE technique using the SmaI enzyme can be used for epidemiological studies of strains of these species.

As an alternative and complementary approach to Cas9-based genome editing, Cas12a has not been widely used in mammalian cells largely due to its strict requirement for the TTTV protospacer adjacent motif (PAM) sequence. Here, we report that Mb3Cas12a (Moraxella bovoculi AAX11_00205) can efficiently edit the mouse genome based on the TTV PAM sequence with minimal numbers of large on-target deletions or insertions. When TTTV PAM sequence-targeting CRISPR (cr)RNAs of 23 nt spacers are used, >70% of the founders obtained are edited. Moreover, the use of Mb3Cas12a tagged to monomeric streptavidin (mSA) in conjunction with biotinylated DNA donor template leads to high knock-in efficiency in two-cell mouse embryos, with 40% of founders obtained containing the desired knock-in sequences.

BACKGROUND: In the prevalence of COVID-19, infection symptoms are different in children and adults. In this study to investigate the differences in the upper respiratory tract microbiome profile between healthy children and adults and to explore which microbiome protect them from COVID-19. METHODS: Thirty healthy children and 24 healthy adults were enrolled between October 2020 and January 2021. Nasal and throat swabs were obtained at enrollment, and DNA was extracted. We performed 16S rDNA sequencing to compare the alpha and beta diversity of the nasal and throat microbiomes between children and adults and assessed potential microbiome biomarkers. RESULTS: In the nasal microbiome, there were significant differences between healthy children and adults, and Moraxella occupied the largest proportion in healthy children. Notably, there was no significant difference between healthy children and adults in the throat microbiome, and it was predominated by Firmicutes. In the function analysis, compared with adults, there was increased enrichment in pathways related to amino acid metabolism and lipid metabolism, in children. CONCLUSIONS: In the upper respiratory tract microbiome profiles, Moraxella may be involved in protecting children from COVID-19 infections and may be involved the amino acid metabolism and lipid metabolism.

Moraxella bovoculi has been isolated frequently from cattle with Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). Two diverse genotypes of M. bovoculi, 1 and 2 were identified based on whole genome sequence analysis. It is essential to discriminate between the two genotypes to frame prevention and control measures. The whole genome of M. bovoculi TN7 was sequenced and compared to other M. bovoculi strains available in the NCBI database. M. bovoculi TN7 was found to be genotype 1, had an RTX toxin operon and pilA gene that are the known virulence factors in related Moraxella sp., but lacked antimicrobial resistance genes. M. bovoculi was found to have an open pangenome with 4051 (75.31%) accessory genes, and the addition of each new genome adds 18 genes to the pangenome. Comparison of pilin protein amino acid sequences revealed three new sequence types. Furthermore, the presence of linx, nagL, swrC and mdtA genes was found to be genotype 1 specific, whereas hyaD, garR, gbsA, yhdG, gabT, iclR, higB2, hmuU, hmuT and hemS were found only in genotype 2. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) primers were designed and evaluated on strain TN7 plus seven additional strains accessible to us that had not been whole genome sequenced. This initial evaluation of the designed primers for the linX and hyaD genes produced the expected banding patterns on PCR gels for genotypes 1 and 2, respectively, among the 8 strains. The genotype-specific genes identified in this study can be used as markers for accurate diagnosis of genotype 1 isolates and this can aid in the development of autogenous or other molecular vaccines for treatment of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in resource-limited research settings.

A novel aerobic bacterium, strain PS-22 of the genus Moraxella, was isolated from the skin of freshwater pufferfish (Tetraodon cutcutia). Cells were Gram stain negative, aerobic, non-motile, and coccoid. Optimum growth occurred at 28-30 °C and pH 6.5-7.5. The major cellular fatty acids were C18:1 ω9c, C10:0, C16:0, and C12:0 anteiso. The predominant polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phospholipid, amino lipid, and seven unknown lipids. The genome size is 2.68 Mbp, and the DNA G + C content was 43.3%. A gene ontology study revealed that the major fraction of genes were associated with biological processes (46.81%), followed by molecular function (34.27%) and cellular components (18.8%). Comparisons of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed 99.11-90% sequence similarity with the closely related type strains of the genus Moraxella. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and average amino acid identity (AAI) of strain PS-22 with reference type strains of the genus Moraxella were below 95-96%, and the corresponding in silico DNA-DNA hybridization (DDH) values were below 70%. A phylogenetic tree based on genome-wide core genes and 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain PS-22 clustered with Moraxella osloensis CCUG350T in both the phylogenetic trees. Genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of strain PS-22 represent a novel species for which Moraxella tetraodonis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is PS-22T (= TBRC 15232T = NBRC 115236T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, coccus-shaped bacteria, designated ZY201115T, was isolated from the nasal cavity of a sheep with respiratory disease in Yunnan Province, south-west China, and its taxonomic affiliation was studied by applying a polyphasic approach. The strain grew at 18-41 °C (optimum, 37 °C), at pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 8.0) and in 0.5-3.0% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 1.0 % NaCl). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain is affiliated to the genus Moraxella with highest similarity to Moraxella bovis ATCC 10900T (96.6 %). Phylogenomic analysis based on 811 single-copy genes also indicated that the strain represents a novel species in the genus Moraxella and formed a deep and separated clade with Moraxella caviae NCTC 10293T. The highest genomic orthologous average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between the strain and the type strains in the genus Moraxella were 73.7% (M. caviae NCTC 10293T) and 25.3% (Moraxella osloensis CCUG 350T), respectively. The G+C content of the complete genome sequence was 42.1 mol%. The predominant fatty acids (>5 %) were C18:1 ω9c, C17:1 ω8c, C12:03OH and summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, cardiolipin, monolysocardiolipin, phosphatidylethanolamine and hemibismonoacylglycerophosphate. The major respiratory quinone was CoQ-8. On the basis of the results of phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characterizations, strain ZY201115T clearly represents a novel species of the genus Moraxella, for which the name Moraxella nasovis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ZY201115T (=CCTCC AB 2021473T=CCUG 75922T).

ABSTRACT: In this brief report, we describe a 16-year-old patient with pre-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia on chemotherapy who presented to the emergency department with a fever and "bruise-like" area on his left forearm. Empiric antibiotic therapy was initiated, and initial tissue biopsy demonstrated findings consistent with ecthyma gangrenosum. On day 4 of admission, initial blood cultures grew Moraxella nonliquefaciens, and targeted antibiotic therapy was initiated and continued for a total of 21 days. The patient was discharged after 6 days of in-patient therapy and made a full recovery. M. nonliquefaciens has been reported to be associated with multiple types of infection, but no cases of M. nonliquefaciens-associated ecthyma gangrenosum were identified in the literature review for this report. Given this unique case and the empiric risks and broad differential associated with cutaneous manifestations in immunocompromised patients, obtaining a skin biopsy for histological examination is imperative for diagnostic workup.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is an ocular disease affecting bovine herds worldwide, and it causes significant economic loss. The etiologic agent of IBK is considered to be Moraxella bovis, but M. ovis and M. bovoculi are frequently recovered of animals presenting clinical signs of IBK. The therapeutic measures available for its control have limited efficacy. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) using porphyrins as photosensitizing molecules is an alternative method that can be used to reduce microbial growth. We evaluated the antibacterial activity of aPDT using two water-soluble tetra-cationic porphyrins (H2TMeP and ZnTMeP) against 22 clinical isolates and standard strains of Moraxella spp. in vitro and in an ex vivo model. For the in vitro assay, 4.0 µM of porphyrin was incubated with approximately 1.0 × 104 CFU/mL of each Moraxella sp. isolate and exposed to artificial light for 0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 min. Next, 50 µL of this solution was plated and incubated for 24 h until CFU measurement. For the ex vivo assay, corneas excised from the eyeballs of slaughtered cattle were irrigated with Moraxella spp. culture, followed by the addition of zinc(II) porphyrin ZnTMeP (4.0 µM). The corneal samples were irradiated for 0, 7.5, and 30 min, followed by swab collection, plating, and CFU count. The results demonstrated the in vitro inactivation of the strains and clinical isolates of Moraxella spp. after 2.5 min of irradiation using ZnTMeP, reaching complete inactivation until 7.5 min. In the ex vivo experiment, the use of ZnTMeP resulted in the most significant reduction in bacterial concentration after 30 min of irradiation. These results encourage future in vivo experiments to investigate the role of metalloporphyrin ZnTMeP in the inactivation of Moraxella spp. isolates causing IBK.

BACKGROUND: Moraxella osloensis rarely causes infection in humans, and most of the reported cases are not fatal. It is often difficult to identify M. osloensis using conventional biochemical methods. METHODS: Here, we report a bacteremia case caused by M. osloensis in a patient with advanced lung cancer who initially presented symptoms of fever. RESULTS: Blood culture revealed growth of a gram-negative bacterium, which was identified as M. osloensis through 16S rRNA gene sequencing and MALDI-TOF analyses. The patient could not recover from sepsis with empirical treatment. CONCLUSIONS: As M. osloensis can cause serious infections in immunocompromised patients, its prompt identification is important.

Bacteria can establish beneficial interactions with plants by acting as growth promoters and enhancing stress tolerance during plant interactions. Likewise, bacteria can develop multispecies communities where multiple interactions are possible. In this work, we assessed the physiological effects of three bacteria isolated from an arid environment (Bacillus niacini, Bacillus megaterium, and Moraxella osloensis) applied as single species or as a consortium on oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) plants. Moreover, we assessed the quorum-sensing (QS) signaling activity to determine the molecular communication between plant-growth-promoting bacteria. The plant inoculation with B. megaterium showed a positive effect on morphometric and physiologic parameters. However, no synergistic effects were observed when a bacterial consortium was inoculated. Likewise, activation of QS signaling in biofilm assays was observed only for interspecies interaction within the Bacillus genus, not for either interaction with M. osloensis. These results suggest a neutral or antagonistic interaction for interspecific bacterial biofilm establishment, as well as for the interaction with oregano plants when bacteria were inoculated in a consortium. In conclusion, we were able to determine that the bacterial interactions are not always positive or synergistic, but they also might be neutral or antagonistic.

Polymyxin is the last line of defense against severe infections caused by carbapenem-resistant gram-negative pathogens. The emergence of transferable MCR-1/2 polymyxin resistance greatly challenges the renewed interest in colistin (polymyxin E) for clinical treatments. Recent studies have suggested that Moraxella species are a putative reservoir for MCR-1/2 genetic determinants. Here, we report the functional definition of ICR-Mo from M. osloensis, a chromosomally encoded determinant of colistin resistance, in close relation to current MCR-1/2 family. ICR-Mo transmembrane protein was prepared and purified to homogeneity. Taken along with an in vitro enzymatic detection, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry of bacterial lipid A pools determined that the ICR-Mo enzyme might exploit a possible "ping-pong" mechanism to accept the phosphoethanolamine (PEA) moiety from its donor phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and then transfer it to the 1(or 4')-phosphate position of lipid A via an ICR-Mo-bound PEA adduct. Structural decoration of LPS-lipid A by ICR-Mo renders the recipient strain of E. coli resistant to polymyxin. Domain swapping assays indicate that the two domains of ICR-Mo cannot be functionally-exchanged with its counterparts in MCR-1/2 and EptA, validating its phylogenetic position in a distinct set of MCR-like genes. Structure-guided functional mapping of ICR-Mo reveals a PE lipid substrate recognizing cavity having a role in enzymatic catalysis and the resultant conference of antibiotic resistance. Expression of icr-Mo in E. coli significantly prevents the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by colistin. Taken together, our results define a member of a group of intrinsic colistin resistance genes phylogenetically close to the MCR-1/2 family, highlighting the evolution of transferable colistin resistance.

OBJECTIVE: To report the ocular and systemic risk factors, clinical manifestations, and management outcomes of Moraxella keratitis. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with culture-proven Moraxella keratitis in South Texas between 2012 and 2018. Clinical data including demographics, ocular and systemic risk factors, clinical presentation, speciation, and treatment course were collected. RESULTS: Fourteen eyes of 14 patients had culture-proven Moraxella keratitis which made up 8.1% of cases of culture-proven bacterial keratitis in the period studied. These included 10 men and 4 women with a mean age of 52.7±11.3 years. Ten patients (71.4%) had different ocular risk factors such as ocular trauma, corneal foreign body, contact lens use, preceding viral keratitis, neurotrophic cornea, and recent corneal transplant on topical steroids. Systemic risk factors included diabetes mellitus, systemic immunosuppressive therapy, cancer chemotherapy, and AIDS. There was no specific clinical manifestation. The size of stromal infiltration on initial presentation varied among the cases, with 71.4% stromal infiltrations of 4 mm or less. The patients were managed with fortified tobramycin, fortified vancomycin, and moxifloxacin eye drops. No eyes required surgical intervention during treatment for the active infection, except for one eye with pre-existing no light perception that was enucleated because of chronic pain. CONCLUSIONS: Moraxella keratitis is a less frequent form of bacterial keratitis that appears more prevalent in patients with previous ocular conditions. Early diagnosis of this infection and medical treatment with a conventional corneal ulcer regimen can result in good clinical outcomes without the need for a surgical intervention.

BACKGROUND: The role of the airway microbiome in the development of recurrent wheezing and asthma remains uncertain, particularly in the high-risk group of infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis. OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine the relation of the nasal microbiota at bronchiolitis-related hospitalization and 3 later points to the risk of recurrent wheezing by age 3 years. METHODS: In 17 US centers researchers collected clinical data and nasal swabs from infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis. Trained parents collected nasal swabs 3 weeks after hospitalization and, when healthy, during the summer and 1 year after hospitalization. We applied 16S rRNA gene sequencing to all nasal swabs. We used joint modeling to examine the relation of longitudinal nasal microbiota abundances to the risk of recurrent wheezing. RESULTS: Among 842 infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis, there was 88% follow-up at 3 years, and 31% had recurrent wheezing. The median age at enrollment was 3.2 months (interquartile range, 1.7-5.8 months). In joint modeling analyses adjusting for 16 covariates, including viral cause, a 10% increase in relative abundance of Moraxella or Streptococcus species 3 weeks after day 1 of hospitalization was associated with an increased risk of recurrent wheezing (hazard ratio [HR] of 1.38 and 95% high-density interval [HDI] of 1.11-1.85 and HR of 1.76 and 95% HDI of 1.13-3.19, respectively). Increased Streptococcus species abundance the summer after hospitalization was also associated with a greater risk of recurrent wheezing (HR, 1.76; 95% HDI, 1.15-3.27). CONCLUSIONS: Enrichment of Moraxella or Streptococcus species after bronchiolitis hospitalization was associated with recurrent wheezing by age 3 years, possibly providing new avenues to ameliorate the long-term respiratory outcomes of infants with severe bronchiolitis.
