RESUMO

PURPOSE: Glioblastomas (GBM) with subventricular zone (SVZ) contact have previously been associated with a specific epigenetic fingerprint. We aim to validate a reported bulk methylation signature to determine SVZ contact. METHODS: Methylation array analysis was performed on IDHwt GBM patients treated at our institution. The v11b4 classifier was used to ensure the inclusion of only receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) I, II, and mesenchymal (MES) subtypes. Methylation-based assignment (SVZM ±) was performed using hierarchical cluster analysis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (T1ce) was independently reviewed for SVZ contact by three experienced readers. RESULTS: Sixty-five of 70 samples were classified as RTK I, II, and MES. Full T1ce MRI-based rater consensus was observed in 54 cases, which were retained for further analysis. Epigenetic SVZM classification and SVZ were strongly associated (OR: 15.0, p = 0.003). Thirteen of fourteen differential CpGs were located in the previously described differentially methylated LRBA/MAB21L2 locus. SVZ + tumors were linked to shorter OS (hazard ratio (HR): 3.80, p = 0.02) than SVZM + at earlier time points (time-dependency of SVZM, p < 0.05). Considering the SVZ consensus as the ground truth, SVZM classification yields a sensitivity of 96.6%, specificity of 36.0%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 63.6%, and negative predictive value (NPV) of 90.0%. CONCLUSION: Herein, we validated the specific epigenetic signature in GBM in the vicinity of the SVZ and highlighted the importance of methylation of a part of the LRBA/MAB21L2 gene locus. Whether SVZM can replace MRI-based SVZ assignment as a prognostic and diagnostic tool will require prospective studies of large, homogeneous cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Lateral ventricular enlargement represents a canonical morphometric finding in chronic patients with schizophrenia; however, longitudinal studies elucidating complex dynamic trajectories of ventricular volume change during critical early disease stages are sparse. METHODS: We measured lateral ventricular volumes in 113 first-episode schizophrenia patients (FES) at baseline visit (11.7 months after illness onset, SD = 12.3) and 128 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) using 3T MRI. MRI was then repeated in both FES and HC one year later. RESULTS: Compared to controls, ventricular enlargement was identified in 18.6% of patients with FES (14.1% annual ventricular volume (VV) increase; 95%CI: 5.4; 33.1). The ventricular expansion correlated with the severity of PANSS-negative symptoms at one-year follow-up (p = 0.0078). Nevertheless, 16.8% of FES showed an opposite pattern of statistically significant ventricular shrinkage during ≈ one-year follow-up (-9.5% annual VV decrease; 95%CI: -23.7; -2.4). There were no differences in sex, illness duration, age of onset, duration of untreated psychosis, body mass index, the incidence of Schneiderian symptoms, or cumulative antipsychotic dose among the patient groups exhibiting ventricular enlargement, shrinkage, or no change in VV. CONCLUSION: Both enlargement and ventricular shrinkage are equally present in the early stages of schizophrenia. The newly discovered early reduction of VV in a subgroup of patients emphasizes the need for further research to understand its mechanisms.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a machine learning-based radiomics model based on multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for preoperative discrimination between central neurocytomas (CNs) and gliomas of lateral ventricles. METHODS: A total of 132 patients from two medical centers were enrolled in this retrospective study. Patients from the first medical center were divided into a training cohort (n = 74) and an internal validation cohort (n = 30). Patients from the second medical center were used as the external validation cohort (n = 28). Features were extracted from contrast-enhanced T1-weighted and T2-weighted images. A support vector machine was used for radiomics model investigation. Performance was evaluated using the sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The model's performance was also compared with those of three radiologists. RESULTS: The radiomics model achieved an AUC of 0.986 in the training cohort, 0.933 in the internal validation cohort, and 0.903 in the external validation cohort. In the three cohorts, the AUC values were 0.657, 0.786, and 0.708 for radiologist 1; 0.838, 0.799, and 0.790 for radiologist 2; and 0.827, 0.871, and 0.862 for radiologist 3. When assisted by the radiomics model, two radiologists improved their performance in the training cohort (p < 0.05) but not in the internal or external validation cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: The machine learning radiomics model based on multiparametric MRI showed better performance for distinguishing CNs from lateral ventricular gliomas than did experienced radiologists, and it showed the potential to improve radiologist performance. KEY POINTS: • The machine learning radiomics model shows excellent performance in distinguishing CNs from gliomas. • The radiomics model outweighs two experienced radiologists (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.90 vs 0.79 and 0.86, respectively). • The radiomics model has the potential to enhance radiologist performance.

OBJECTIVE: Ventriculomegaly can be associated with long-term neurodevelopmental impairment. Prenatal diagnosis of ventriculomegaly is most commonly made at the routine second-trimester anomaly scan. The value of first-trimester ultrasound has expanded to early diagnosis and screening of fetal abnormalities. The objective of this study was to assess the predictive accuracy of first-trimester choroid-plexus-to-lateral-ventricle-or-head ratios for development of ventriculomegaly at a later gestational age. METHODS: This was a case-control study of fetuses with isolated ventriculomegaly diagnosed after 16 weeks' gestation and a control group of normal fetuses (without ventriculomegaly). The exclusion criteria included aneuploidy, genetic syndrome and/or other brain abnormality. Stored two-dimensional first-trimester ultrasound images were analyzed blindly offline and fetal biometry was performed in the axial view of the fetal head. The ratios of choroid plexus area (PA) to lateral ventricular area (VA), choroid plexus length (PL) to lateral ventricular length (VL), choroid plexus diameter (PD) to lateral ventricular diameter (VD) and PA to biparietal diameter (BPD) were measured at 11 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks' gestation. Intra- and interobserver variability of measurement of these fetal head biometric parameters at 11 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks' gestation were assessed in 20 normal fetuses using intraclass correlation coefficients with 95% CI. The accuracy of first-trimester biometric measurements for prediction of ventriculomegaly was assessed using the area under the receiver-operating-characteristics curves (AUC). RESULTS: The analysis included 683 singleton pregnancies, of which 102 fetuses were diagnosed with ventriculomegaly. Ventriculomegaly was mild in 86 (84.3%) cases and severe in the other 16 (15.7%). All first-trimester fetal choroid-plexus-to-lateral-ventricle/head ratios were significantly lower in cases with ventriculomegaly compared with controls (P < 0.001), with good inter- and intraobserver agreement (≥ 0.95) for the majority of the fetal head biometric parameters assessed. On adjusting for crown-rump length, optimism-adjusted AUC values obtained after cross-validation showed that both PL/VL ratio (AUC, 0.87 (95% CI, 0.73-0.98)) and PA/VA ratio (AUC, 0.90 (95% CI, 0.82-0.98)) had good predictive accuracy for severe ventriculomegaly. The PA/BPD ratio (AUC, 0.73 (95% CI, 0.54-0.90)) had modest predictive ability, which was significantly lower compared with that of the PA/VA ratio and PL/VL ratio (P = 0.003 and P = 0.001, respectively). The predictive accuracy of PD/VD ratio was low with an AUC of 0.65 (95% CI, 0.47-0.84). Optimism-adjusted AUC values obtained after cross-validation showed that PA/VA ratio offered the highest predictive accuracy for mild ventriculomegaly with an AUC of 0.84 (95% CI, 0.79-0.89), followed by PL/VL ratio (AUC, 0.82 (95% CI, 0.76-0.88)), PA/BPD ratio (AUC, 0.76 (95% CI, 0.69-0.82)) and PD/VD ratio (AUC, 0.75 (95% CI, 0.67-0.81)). Calibration plots showed that both PA/VA and PL/VL ratios had good calibration. CONCLUSION: First-trimester prediction of ventriculomegaly using ratios of fetal choroid plexus to lateral ventricle/head appears promising. Future prospective studies are needed to validate the predictive accuracy of these ultrasound markers as a screening tool for ventriculomegaly. © 2023 The Authors. The mouse subventricular zone (SVZ) produces neurons throughout life. It is useful for mechanism discovery and is relevant for regeneration. However, the SVZ is deep, significantly restricting live imaging since current methods do not extend beyond a few hundred microns. We developed and adapted three-photon microscopy (3PM) for non-invasive deep brain imaging in live mice, but its utility in imaging the SVZ niche was unknown. Here, with fluorescent dyes and genetic labeling, we show successful 3PM imaging in the whole SVZ, extending to a maximum depth of 1.5 mm ventral to the dura mater. 3PM imaging distinguished multiple SVZ cell types in postnatal and juvenile mice. We also detected fine processes on neural stem cells interacting with the vasculature. Previous live imaging removed overlying cortical tissue or lowered lenses into the brain, which could cause inflammation and alter neurogenesis. We found that neither astrocytes nor microglia become activated in the SVZ, suggesting 3PM does not induce major damage in the niche. Thus, we show for the first time 3PM imaging of the SVZ in live mice. This strategy could be useful for intravital visualization of cell dynamics, molecular, and pathological perturbation and regenerative events.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the value of the sonographic measurements of the choroid plexus and the lateral ventricles at 11-14 gestational weeks in fetuses that had the diagnosis of second-trimester ventriculomegaly (VM) as a clinical reference. METHODS: The standard axial plane used for biparietal diameter measurement from 2D stored images in the first trimester was used to calculate the ratio between the choroid plexus and lateral ventricle diameter (PDVDR), the choroid plexus and lateral ventricle length (PLVLR) and the choroid plexus and lateral ventricle area (PAVAR) in 100 normal and 15 fetuses diagnosed with second-trimester VM. RESULTS: In fetuses with VM, the measurements of PDVDR, PLVLR and PAVAR were all significantly smaller compared to normal fetuses (p = < 0.001, <0.001, <0.01). Four out of seven cases with mild VM had measurements below the 5th percentile (57%). 75% of cases with moderate or severe VM had at least one measurement below the 5th percentile. CONCLUSIONS: Since the axial plane of the fetal head is obtained in all first-trimester routine screenings, the measurements of PDVDR, PLVLR and PAVAR could easily be integrated into routine examinations for an early detection of VM.

RESUMO

Ring-shaped lateral ventricular nodules (RSLVN) are small and round nodules attached on the ependyma of lateral ventricles with unknown nature. They are considered "leave me alone lesions" and differential diagnosis includes subependymal grey matter heterotopia, subependymomas, subependymal hamartomas, and subependymal giant cell astrocytomas. In this short article, we report imaging findings of RSLNVs discovered in five patients, underlining the pivotal role of neuroimaging in the diagnostic path.

Glioblastoma (GBM) derived from the "stem cell" rich subventricular zone (SVZ) may constitute a therapy-refractory subgroup of tumors associated with poor prognosis. Risk stratification for these cases is necessary but is curtailed by error prone imaging-based evaluation. Therefore, we aimed to establish a robust DNA methylome-based classification of SVZ GBM and subsequently decipher underlying molecular characteristics. MRI assessment of SVZ association was performed in a retrospective training set of IDH-wildtype GBM patients (n = 54) uniformly treated with postoperative chemoradiotherapy. DNA isolated from FFPE samples was subject to methylome and copy number variation (CNV) analysis using Illumina Platform and cnAnalysis450k package. Deep next-generation sequencing (NGS) of a panel of 130 GBM-related genes was conducted (Agilent SureSelect/Illumina). Methylome, transcriptome, CNV, MRI, and mutational profiles of SVZ GBM were further evaluated in a confirmatory cohort of 132 patients (TCGA/TCIA). A 15 CpG SVZ methylation signature (SVZM) was discovered based on clustering and random forest analysis. One third of CpG in the SVZM were associated with MAB21L2/LRBA. There was a 14.8% (n = 8) discordance between SVZM vs. MRI classification. Re-analysis of these patients favored SVZM classification with a hazard ratio (HR) for OS of 2.48 [95% CI 1.35-4.58], p = 0.004 vs. 1.83 [1.0-3.35], p = 0.049 for MRI classification. In the validation cohort, consensus MRI based assignment was achieved in 62% of patients with an intraclass correlation (ICC) of 0.51 and non-significant HR for OS (2.03 [0.81-5.09], p = 0.133). In contrast, SVZM identified two prognostically distinct subgroups (HR 3.08 [1.24-7.66], p = 0.016). CNV alterations revealed loss of chromosome 10 in SVZM- and gains on chromosome 19 in SVZM- tumors. SVZM- tumors were also enriched for differentially mutated genes (p < 0.001). In summary, SVZM classification provides a novel means for stratifying GBM patients with poor prognosis and deciphering molecular mechanisms governing aggressive tumor phenotypes.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the interrelation of the signal intensities and thicknesses of the transient developmental zones in the cingulate and neocortical telencephalic wall, using T2-weighted 3 T-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and histological scans from the same brain hemisphere. The study encompassed 24 postmortem fetal brains (15-35 postconceptional weeks, PCW). The measurements were performed using Fiji and NDP.view2. We found that T2w MR signal-intensity curves show a specific regional and developmental stage profile already at 15 PCW. The MRI-histological correlation reveals that the subventricular-intermediate zone (SVZ-IZ) contributes the most to the regional differences in the MRI-profile and zone thicknesses, growing by a factor of 2.01 in the cingulate, and 1.78 in the neocortical wall. The interrelations of zone or wall thicknesses, obtained by both methods, disclose a different rate and extent of shrinkage per region (highest in neocortical subplate and SVZ-IZ) and stage (highest in the early second half of fetal development), distorting the zones' proportion in histological sections. This intrasubject, slice-matched, 3 T correlative MRI-histological study provides important information about regional development of the cortical wall, critical for the design of MRI criteria for prenatal brain monitoring and early detection of cortical or other brain pathologies in human fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: To compare conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), and perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) characteristics in different grades of trigone meningiomas. METHODS: Thirty patients with trigone meningiomas were enrolled in this retrospective study. Conventional MRI was performed in all patients; SWI (17 cases), dynamic contrast-enhanced PWI (10 cases), and dynamic susceptibility contrast PWI (6 cases) were performed. Demographics, conventional MRI features, SWI- and PWI-derived parameters were compared between different grades of trigone meningiomas. RESULTS: On conventional MRI, the irregularity of tumor shape (ρ = 0.497, P = 0.005) and the extent of peritumoral edema (ρ = 0.187, P = 0.022) might help distinguish low-grade and high-grade trigone meningiomas. On multiparametric functional MRI, rTTPmax (1.17 ± 0.06 vs 1.30 ± 0.05, P = 0.048), Kep, Ve, and iAUC demonstrated their potentiality to predict World Health Organization grades I, II, and III trigone meningiomas. CONCLUSIONS: Conventional MRI combined with dynamic susceptibility contrast and dynamic contrast-enhanced can help predict the World Health Organization grade of trigone meningiomas.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether there are differences in the lateral ventricular volumes, measured by three-dimensional ultrasound (3D US) depending on the posture of the neonate (right and left lateral decubitus). STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective analysis of the lateral ventricular volumes of preterm neonates recruited from Victoria Hospital, London, Ontario (June 2018-November 2019). A total of 24 premature neonates were recruited. The first cohort of 18 unstable premature neonates were imaged with 3D US in their current sides providing 15 right-sided and 16 left-sided 3D US images. The neonates in the second cohort of six relatively stable infants were imaged after positioning in each lateral decubitus position for 30 minutes, resulting in 40 3D US images obtained from 20 posture change sessions. The images were segmented and the ventricle volumes in each lateral posture were compared with determine whether the posture of the head influenced the volume of the upper and lower ventricle. RESULTS: For the first cohort who did not have their posture changed, the mean of the right and left ventricle volumes were 23.81 ± 15.51 and 21.61 ± 16.19 cm3, respectively, for the 15 images obtained in a right lateral posture and 13.96 ± 8.69 and 14.92 ± 8.77 cm3, respectively, for the 16 images obtained in the left lateral posture. Similarly, for the second cohort who had their posture changed, the mean of right and left ventricle volumes were 20.92 ± 17.3 and 32.74 ± 32.33 cm3, respectively, after 30 minutes in the right lateral posture, and 21.25 ± 18.4 and 32.65 ± 31.58 cm3, respectively, after 30 minutes in the left lateral posture. Our results failed to show a statistically significant difference in ventricular volumes dependence on posture. CONCLUSION: Head positioned to any lateral side for 30 minutes does not have any effect on the lateral ventricular volumes of neonates. KEY POINTS: · Three-dimensional cranial ultrasound can measure neonatal ventricle volume.. · Ventricle volume in each lateral ventricle may be affected by posture of the neonate.. · The 30 minutes in any lateral posture is not sufficient to create volume difference in lateral ventricles..

Using postmortem CT (PMCT), changes in the volume of the lateral cerebral ventricles (LCVs) and modifications of the radiodensity of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been examined to identify a possible relationship between these changes and the time of death. Subsequent periodical CT scans termed "sequential scans" for ten corpses at known time of death were obtained, and a 3D segmentation of the entire LCV was carried out to measure its volume and radiodensity over time from ~ 5.5- h up to 273-h postmortem. A linear decrease of the LCV volume for all the cases was observed in the investigated time range, together with an overall logarithmic increase of radiodensity. Although a larger sampling should be performed to improve the result reliability, our finding suggests that the postmortem variation of CSF radiodensity can be a potentially useful tool in determining postmortem interval, a finding that is worthy of further investigation.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to explore the subependymal layers overlying the cerebral ventricles using magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: A total of 69 outpatients underwent constructive interference in steady-state (CISS) sequence in thin-sliced, coronal, and sagittal sections. RESULTS: The subependymal layers were delineated as linear hyperintensities, coursing along the outer margins of the ventricular walls. On coronal images, the hyperintensities surrounding the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle were identified in 97% of patients, while those of the third ventricle were identified in 96% of patients. In the trigone and posterior horn of the lateral ventricle, the hyperintensities were delineated in all patients. On sagittal images, subependymal hyperintensities were identified in all. At the level of the anterior horn and third ventricle, the subependymal hyperintensities were found to communicate with the Virchow-Robin spaces (VRSs) in 68% and 65% of patients, respectively. At the level of the trigone and posterior horn of the lateral ventricle, the VRSs communicated with the subependymal hyperintensities in 83% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: Subependymal hyperintensity may represent an inflow passage of the VRSs that jointly contribute to efficient transependymal migration of the interstitial fluid into the ventricular cerebrospinal fluid.

Pineal region is deep located and tightly connected with surrounding important nerves, blood vessels, and other critical structure. Tumors in the regions are more commonly observed in children with complex pathology, difficult surgery, and poor prognosis. However, excision surgery on large tumor in the pineal region and extending into the third ventricle is characterized by high difficulty and uneasy treatment. Related experience and knowledge about excising large tumor in children pineal region which extending into the third ventricle by transcallosal-lateral ventricle-choroid fissure approach was described in the paper. Clinical data of 15 children patients with large tumors in pineal region which extending into the third ventricle treated by our group from 2011 to 2015 was retrospectively analyzed (< 15 years of age, tumor size > >3 × 3 × 3 cm3). Fifteen cases underwent tumor excision with surgery by transcallosal-lateral ventricle-choroid fissure approach including 11 male patients and 4 female patients with average age of 9.1 years and tumor volume from 3 × 3 × 3 to 5 × 6 × 7 cm3. They were assessed according to postoperative clinical symptom remission rate, blood loss during surgery, tumor removal rate, postoperative recurrence rate, etc. as indicators. Five cases belonged to germ cell tumors, 4 for teratoma, 1 for malignant teratoma, 2 for glioma, 2 for meningioma, and 1 for pineocytoma. Surgical total excision rate was 100%, while the mean intraoperative blood loss was about 300 ml. No case was dead due to surgery, and all cases had good postoperative recovery. Children patients are characterized by less blood than adults, larger volume size during surgery treatment, poor postoperative anti-infectious ability, etc. High requirements are proposed on surgery treatment, by long-term clinical exploration and experience accumulation. Our group believes that surrounding structures such as veins and dome are stretched and stimulated rarely in excision of children in large and medium tumor in pineal region which extending into the third ventricle by transcallosal-lateral ventricle-choroid fissure approach; thereby, the tumor can be completely excised, and larger veins and other important structures can be well-preserved with fewer complications, high full cut rate, and rapid recovery.

We studied cell proliferation in the postnatal mouse brain between the ages of 2 and 30 months and identified four compartments with different densities of proliferating cells. The first identified compartment corresponds to the postnatal pallial neurogenic (PPN) zone in the telencephalon; the second to the subpallial postnatal neurogenic (SPPN) zone in the telencephalon; the third to the white matter bundles in the telencephalon; and the fourth to all brain parts outside of the other three compartments. We estimated that about 3.4 million new cells, including 0.8 million in the subgranular zone (SGZ) in the hippocampus, are produced in the PPN zone. About 21 million new cells, including 10 million in the subependymal zone (SEZ) in the lateral walls of the lateral ventricle and 2.7 million in the rostral migratory stream (RMS), are produced in the SPPN zone. The third and fourth compartments together produced about 31 million new cells. The analysis of cell proliferation in neurogenic zones shows that postnatal neurogenesis is the direct continuation of developmental neurogenesis in the telencephalon and that adult neurogenesis has characteristics of the late developmental process. As a developmental process, adult neurogenesis supports only compensatory regeneration, which is very inefficient.

High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging has made it possible to examine the normal anatomy, variations, and diseases of the lateral ventricles more precisely. Better understanding of the anatomic variations and lesions of the ventricular system helps to prevent erroneous interpretation of normal variants or lesions without clinical significance. We review the anatomy and tumors of the lateral ventricles in this article.

INTRODUCTION: There is growing evidence that the subventricular zone (SVZ) plays a key role in glioblastoma (GBM) tumorigenesis. However, little is known regarding how the SVZ, which is a harbor for adult neural stem cells, may be influenced by chemoradiation. The current diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) study explored ipsilateral and contralateral alterations in the anterior SVZ in GBM patients with posterior enhancing lesions following chemoradiation. METHODS: Forty GBM patients with tumor involvement in the posterior SVZ (mean age = 57 ± 10; left-hemisphere N = 25; right-hemisphere N = 15) were evaluated using DWI before and after chemoradiation. Regions-of-interest were drawn on the ipsilesional and contralesional anterior SVZ on apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps for both timepoints. ADC histogram analysis was performed by modeling a bimodal, double Gaussian distribution to obtain ADCL, defined as the mean of the lower Gaussian distribution. RESULTS: The ipsilesional SVZ had lower ADCL values compared to the contralesional SVZ before treatment (mean difference = 0.025 µm2/ms; P = 0.007). Following chemoradiation, these changes were no longer observed (mean difference = 0.0025 µm2/ms; P > 0.5), as ADCL values of the ipsilesional SVZ increased (mean difference = 0.026 µm2/ms; P = 0.037). An increase in ipsilesional ADCL was associated with shorter progression-free (P = 0.0119) and overall survival (P = 0.0265). CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary observations suggest baseline asymmetry as well as asymmetric changes in the SVZ proximal (ipsilesional) to the tumor with respect to contralesional SVZ regions may be present in GBM, potentially implicating this region in tumorigenesis and/or treatment resistance.

INTRODUCTION: We previously reported that CD133 expression correlated with the recurrence pattern of glioblastoma (GBM). Subventricular zone (SVZ) involvement may also be associated with distant recurrence in GBM. Therefore, we herein investigated whether the combined analysis of SVZ involvement and CD133 expression is useful for predicting the pattern of GBM recurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 167 cases of GBM. Tumors were divided into four groups based on spatial relationships between contrast-enhanced lesions (CEL) and the SVZ or cortex (Ctx) on MRI. The initial recurrence pattern (local/distant) was obtained from medical records. To identify factors predictive of recurrence, we examined CD133 expression by immunohistochemical, clinical (age, sex, KPS, Ki-67 labeling index, surgery, and MRI characteristics), and genetic (IDH1, MGMT, and BRAF) factors. RESULTS: The CD133 expression rate was higher in SVZ-positive tumors than in SVZ-negative tumors (P = 0.046). Distant recurrence was observed in 21% of patients, and no significant difference was noted in recurrence patterns among the four groups. However, strong CD133 expression was associated with a shorter time to distant recurrence in univariate, multivariate, and propensity-matched scoring analyses (P < 0.0001, P = 0.001, and P = 0.0084, respectively). In the combined analysis, distant recurrence was the most frequent (70%) in group III (SVZ-negative, Ctx-positive) GBM and those with high CD133 expression rates (≥ 15%). CONCLUSION: An integrated analysis of CD133 expression and MRI-based tumor classification may be useful for predicting the recurrence pattern of GBM.

The aim of this study was to correlate ventricular size and volumes of deep gray matter (DGM) in MRI at term equivalent age (TEA) with outcome at a corrected age of 24 months in preterm infants and with handedness. Seventy-three infants born before 32 weeks of gestation or with birth weight < 1500 g  were included in this retrospective analysis and measurement of lateral ventricles, and DGM was performed on MRI scans. The left lateral ventricle was significantly larger than the right lateral ventricle (p = 0.001). There was no correlation between volumes of the right and left ventricles and the DGM volume (p = 0.207 and p = 0.597, respectively), nor with the head circumference at TEA (p = 0.177 and p = 0.976, respectively). The total volume of both lateral ventricles did not correlate with Mental Develomental Index (MDI, p = 0.336) or Psychomotor Developmental Index (PDI, p = 0.650) score (Bayley Scales of Infant Development, BSID II). However, a correlation of total DGM volume with birth weight (p = 0.0001; r = 0.437), head circumference at TEA (p < 0.0001; r = 0.640), MDI (p = 0.029; r = 0.310), and PDI (p = 0.002; r = 0.456) was observed. No significant difference between right- and left-handed infants was seen in relation to volumes of both lateral ventricles and of DGM.Conclusion: DGM volume at TEA was significantly associated with the outcome at a corrected age of 24 months. Handedness did not correlate with DGM or lateral ventricle size.What is Known:• White matter injury as well as altered development of deep gray matter is associated with neurodevelopmental disability in preterm infants.• No study analyzed the association between deep gray matter volume or volumes of lateral ventricle and handedness in former preterm infants so far.What is New:• Volume of deep gray matter, but not lateral ventricular size was significantly associated with outcome at a corrected age of 24 months in preterm infants.• There was no correlation of handedness with volumes of lateral ventricular size or with deep gray matter volumes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to examine MRI findings of the brain and spine on prenatal and postnatal MRI following intrauterine repair of open spinal dysraphism (OSD) by open hysterotomy and fetoscopic approaches. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a single-center HIPAA-compliant and IRB-approved retrospective analysis of fetal MRIs with open spinal dysraphism from January 2011 through December 2018 that underwent subsequent prenatal repair of OSD. RESULTS: Sixty-two patients met inclusion criteria: 47 underwent open repair, and 15 underwent fetoscopic repair, with an average gestational age of 22.6 ± 1.4 weeks at initial MRI. On postnatal MRI, spinal cord syrinx was seen in 34% (16/47) of patients undergoing open versus 33.3% (5/15) undergoing fetoscopic repair (P = 0.96). Postnatally, there was no significant difference in hindbrain herniation between the open versus fetoscopic repair groups (P = 0.28). Lateral ventricular size was significantly larger in the open (20.9 ± 6.7 mm) versus the fetoscopic repair (16.1 ± 4.9 mm) group (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: Though lateral ventricular size in the open repair group was larger than the fetoscopic repair group, this can likely be explained by initial selection criteria used for fetoscopic repair. Other postoperative imaging parameters on postnatal MRI were not significantly different between the two groups.
