This paper describes the historical memory of the Mont-Serrat ConfinementHospital, currently Couto Maia Hospital. The hospital was created on April 9, 1853 by the President of the province of Bahia João Mauricio Wanderley, in order to treat the sailors affected by yellow fever on board of national and foreign merchant ships which landed in the city of Salvador, Bahia. This is an essay regarding the memory of the Couto Maia Hospital which shows the history of science, considering the social, political, cultural and historical health aspects. This paper reaffirms the existence of scientific practice in Brazil in the nineteenth century.
Este trabajo relata la Memoria Histórica del Hospital de Aislamiento de Mont-Serrat, actualmente conocido como Hospital Couto Maia. Creado por el Presidente de la Provincia de la Bahia, João Mauricio Wanderley, el 09 de abril de 1853, con el objetivo de tratar a los marinos embarcados en los navios mercantes nacionales y extranjeros que aportaban a la ciudad de Salvador, Bahia, afectados por la fiebre amarilla, Anclados en la historiografia de las ciencias, y considerando la história social, política, cultural y de la salud, presentamos un ensayo de la memoria del Hospital Couto Maia, reafirmando la existencia de la práctica científica en Brasil durante el siglo XIX.
