Malaria is a prominent vector-borne illness caused by Plasmodium parasites. Therapeutic intervention remains a critical component for disease eradication efforts but is complicated by the emergence of drug resistance. This SnapShot summarizes the human-relevant stages of the P. falciparum life cycle and describes how licensed antimalarials, clinical candidates, and newly emerging compounds target each stage to prevent, treat, or block transmission of malaria.
