Since the discovery of human leukocyte antigens (HLAs), the function of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) gene families in a wide range of diseases have been the subject of research for decades. In particular, the associations of autoimmune disorders to allelic variants and candidate genes encoding the MHC are well documented. However, despite decades of research, the knowledge of MHC associations with human disease susceptibility have been predominantly studied in European origin, with limited understanding in different populations and ethnic groups. This is particularly evident in countries and ethnic populations of the Arabian Peninsula. Human MHC haplotypes, and its association with diseases, of the variable ethnic groups of this region are poorly studied. This review compiled published manuscripts that have reported a list of autoimmune diseases (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, systemic lupus erythematosus, myasthenia gravis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis vulgaris, and multiple sclerosis) associated with MHC class I and class II in the populations of the Arabian Peninsula, specifically Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Data available was compared with other three ethnic groups, namely Caucasians, Asians, and Africans. The limited data available in the public domain on the association between MHC gene and autoimmune diseases highlight the challenges in the Middle Eastern region.

Pollution of the marine environment by plastic marine debris has become one of the most pervasive threats impacting marine environments. In this study, for the first time, we evaluate the polymer types of the plastic marine debris ingested by 49 green and 14 loggerhead sea turtle strandings in the Gulf of Oman. Plastic marine debris was ingested by 73.5% of green and 42.9% of loggerhead sea turtles in this study. Overall, evidence suggested that green sea turtles from the Gulf of Oman coast of the United Arab Emirates ingested high levels of plastic marine debris, predominantly Polypropylene (PP) & Polyethylene (PE), followed by Nylon, PP-PE mixture, Polystyrene (PS), Poly vinyl chloride (PVC) and Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), respectively. Loggerhead sea turtles also ingested high levels of plastic marine debris, which also predominantly consisted of PP & PE, followed by PP-PE mixture, Nylon and PS. While recent studies were directed into polymer characterization of micro-plastics in aquatic life, our study focuses on macro-plastics which impose significantly greater risks.

Transition metal selenides (TMS) have excellent research prospects and significant attention in supercapacitors (SCs) owing to their high electrical conductivity, superior electrochemical activity and excellent structural stability. However, the commercial utilization of TMS remains challenge due to their elaborate synthesis. Present study designed a hierarchical cobalt selenide (CoSe2) nanowire array on Ni-foam to serve as a positive electrode for asymmetric SCs (ASCs). The nanowires-like morphology of CoSe2 was highly advantageous for SCs, as it offered enhanced electrical conductivity, plenty of surface sites, and short ion diffusion. The as-obtained, CoSe2 nanowire electrode demonstrated outstanding electrochemical features, with an areal capacity of 1.08 mAh cm-2 at 3 mA cm-2, high-rate performance (69.5 % at 50 mA cm-2), as well as outstanding stability after 10,000 cycles. The iron titanium nitride@nitrogen-doped graphene (Fe-TiN@NG) was prepared as a negative electrode to construct the ASCs cell. The obtained ASCs cell illustrated an energy density of 91.8 W h kg-1 at a power density of 281.4 W kg-1 and capacity retention of 94.6% over 10,000 cycles. The overall results provide a more efficient strategy to develop redox-ambitious active materials with a high capacity for advanced energy-storage systems.

For the first time, the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of marine debris ingested by six hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and seven olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) sea turtles from the Gulf of Oman coast of the United Arab Emirates were investigated. The numeric and gravimetric proportions of ingested marine debris obtained from the esophagus, stomach and intestines were quantified following categories of presumed sources, Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), rigidity, color and plastic polymer types. Marine debris was observed in 28.6% of olive ridley (x̅: 2.00 items; 4.83 g) and 83.3% of hawksbill specimens (x̅: 6.00 ± 2.32 items; 0.32 ± 0.24 g). Overall, the results of this preliminary study suggest that hawksbill sea turtles were ingesting marine debris at higher frequencies and that plastics were observed to be the most predominant debris ingested. However, non-plastic rubbish, particularly metallic fishing gear (fish hooks and fish traps), were observed to present lethal hazards for both species.

The pervasiveness of marine debris is now considered one of the most persistent changes in marine environments. This study reports marine debris ingested by green sea turtles Chelonia mydas and loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta that stranded along the eastern coast of the Sharjah Emirate in the United Arab Emirates. We observed that both green and loggerhead sea turtles frequently ingest (Frequency of Occurrence: 75.0% and 57.1% respectively) high quantities of marine debris, particularly plastics. The results suggest that green sea turtles are more likely to ingest soft items such as threads and sheets while loggerheads are more likely to ingest hard items. When considering the quantity, frequency and nature of ingested marine debris as well as the physiology of specific species and age classes, green sea turtles, particularly younger specimens, ingest the greatest amount of marine debris.

The classical Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) class II haplotypes of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) that are associated with type 1 diabetes (T1D) were identified in five families from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Segregation analyses were performed on these 5 families with the disease, 3 with one child and 2 with 2 children diagnosed with T1D. Three HLA-DR4 haplotypes were identified: HLA- DRB1∗04:01:01-DQB1∗03:02:01:01; HLA- DRB1∗04:02:01- DQB1∗03:02:01; and HLA -DRB1∗04:05:01-DQB1∗02:02:01:02. All have previously been identified to be associated with T1D in studies of the Arabian population. In the 10 parents from the 5 families, 9 had at least one HLA-DR4 and HLA-DR3 haplotype which potentially increases the risk of T1D. Of these 9 parents, 3 were heterozygous for HLA-DR4/HLA-DR3 and one was homozygous for HLA-DR3. Two haplotypes that were identified here extend to the HLA class I region were previously designated AH8.2 (HLA -A∗26-B∗08-DRB1∗03) and AH50.2 (HLA -C∗06-B∗50-DRB1∗03:01-DQ∗02) and associated with diabetes in neighboring North Indian populations. This study provides examples of MHC haplotype analysis in pedigrees to improve our understanding of the genetics of T1D in the understudied population of the UAE.
