RESUMEN

In this paper, a systematic study on preparation of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-supported nickel catalyst is pursued. Functional groups are introduced on the surface of MWCNTs using nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and partial oxidation in air. Nickel oxide nanoparticles are formed on the surface of functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes by incipient wetness impregnation of nickel nitrate, followed by calcination in air. The effects of acid type and concentration, acid treatment time, partial oxidation, nickel loading, precursor solvent, and calcination temperature on the size of the nickel nanoparticles and homogeneity of the composite material are evaluated. Characteristics of the Ni/MWCNT catalysts were examined using BET, scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis in air and nitrogen, temperature-programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, acid-base titration, and zeta-potential analyzer. Results of this work are useful for formulating CNT-supported nickel catalysts for a wide range of different applications, such as reforming of hydrocarbons, catalytic hydrothermal gasification of biomass, and energy storage.

RESUMEN

Increasing population has posed insurmountable challenges to agriculture in the provision of future food security, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region where biophysical conditions are not well-suited for agriculture. Iran, as a major agricultural country in the MENA region, has long been in the quest for food self-sufficiency, however, the capability of its land and water resources to realize this goal is largely unknown. Using very high-resolution spatial data sets, we evaluated the capacity of Iran's land for sustainable crop production based on the soil properties, topography, and climate conditions. We classified Iran's land suitability for cropping as (million ha): very good 0.4% (0.6), good 2.2% (3.6), medium 7.9% (12.8), poor 11.4% (18.5), very poor 6.3% (10.2), unsuitable 60.0% (97.4), and excluded areas 11.9% (19.3). In addition to overarching limitations caused by low precipitation, low soil organic carbon, steep slope, and high soil sodium content were the predominant soil and terrain factors limiting the agricultural land suitability in Iran. About 50% of the Iran's existing croplands are located in low-quality lands, representing an unsustainable practice. There is little room for cropland expansion to increase production but redistribution of cropland to more suitable areas may improve sustainability and reduce pressure on water resources, land, and ecosystem in Iran.

RESUMEN

This study presents a techno-economic assessment of algae-derived biodiesel under economic and technical uncertainties associated with the development of algal biorefineries. A global sensitivity analysis was performed using a High Dimensional Model Representation (HDMR) method. It was found that, considering reasonable ranges over which each parameter can vary, the sensitivity of the biodiesel production cost to the key input parameters decreases in the following order: algae oil content>algae annual productivity per unit area>plant production capacity>carbon price increase rate. It was also found that the Return on Investment (ROI) is highly sensitive to the algae oil content, and to a lesser extent to the algae annual productivity, crude oil price and price increase rate, plant production capacity, and carbon price increase rate. For a large scale plant (100,000 tonnes of biodiesel per year) the production cost of biodiesel is likely to be £0.8-1.6 per kg.
