Medicinal plant intercropping is a new intercropping method. However, as a new intercropping model, the influence of intercropping of alfalfa on microorganisms has not been clarified clearly. In this study, the composition and diversity of microbial communities in alfalfa intercropping were studied, and the differences of bacterial and fungal communities and their relationships with environmental factors are discussed. Intercropping significantly decreased soil pH and significantly increased soil total phosphorus (TP) content, but did not increase soil total carbon (TC) and total nitrogen (TN). Intercropping can increase the relative abundance of Actinobacteria and reduce the relative abundance of Proteobacteria in soil. The relative abundance and diversity of bacteria were significantly correlated with soil pH and TP, while the diversity of fungi was mainly correlated with TC, TN and soil ecological stoichiometry. The bacterial phylum was mainly related to pH and TP, while the fungal phylum was related to TC, TN, C: P and N: P. The present study revealed the stoichiometry of soil CNP and microbial community characteristics of mulberry-alfalfa intercropping soil, clarified the relationship between soil stoichiometry and microbial community composition and diversity, and provided a theoretical basis for the systematic management of mulberry-alfalfa intercropping in northwest Liaoning.

Cholesterol is an essential component of cell membranes and helps to maintain their structure and function. Abnormal cholesterol metabolism has been linked to the development and progression of tumors. Changes in cholesterol metabolism triggered by internal or external stimuli can promote tumor growth. During metastasis, tumor cells require large amounts of cholesterol to support their growth and colonization of new organs. Recent research has shown that cholesterol metabolism is reprogrammed during tumor development, and this can also affect the anti-tumor activity of immune cells in the surrounding environment. However, identifying the specific targets in cholesterol metabolism that regulate cancer progression and the tumor microenvironment is still a challenge. Additionally, exploring the potential of combining statin drugs with other therapies for different types of cancer could be a worthwhile avenue for future drug development. In this review, we focus on the molecular mechanisms of cholesterol and its derivatives in cell metabolism and the tumor microenvironment, and discuss specific targets and relevant therapeutic agents that inhibit aspects of cholesterol homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a prevalent symptom of acute brain dysfunction caused by Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the understanding of delirium in COVID-19 patients is currently limited. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of delirium and its risk factors in hospitalized COVID-19 patients for early identification and management of delirium. METHODS: This cohort study included hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection at seven tertiary hospitals from January to February 2023. Delirium was assessed at a single time point using the 3-Minute Diagnostic Assessment for Delirium by trained research assistants. Demographic data, clinical characteristics, in-hospital mortality and other variables were collected from health information system. Multivariate regression analyses were conducted to investigate the risk factors for delirium and the impact of delirium on in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: A total of 4589 COVID-19 patients were included, out of which 651 cases (14.2%) were identified as delirium. In the multivariable analysis, aging (OR 3.58 [95%CI 2.75-4.67], p < 0.001), higher aspartic transaminase/alanine transaminase ratio (OR = 1.11, [95%CI 1.02-1.21], p = 0.018), Mg2+ (OR = 3.04, [95%CI 2.56-3.62], p < 0.001), blood urea nitrogen (OR = 1.01, [95%CI 1.00, 1.02], p = 0.024), and indwelling urethral catheterization (OR = 1.59, [95%CI 1.21, 2.09], p < 0.001) were associated with an increased risk of delirium. After adjusting for age, sex, and CCI, delirium was found to be associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality (OR = 2.42, [95%CI 1.59, 3.67], p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Delirium was a frequent complication among hospitalized COVID-19 patients and was related to unfavorable outcomes. It is crucial to reduce delirium and its long-term effects by addressing the modifiable risk factors.

Despite the various vaccines that have been developed to combat the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the persistent and unpredictable mutations of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) require innovative and unremitting solutions to cope with the resultant immune evasion and establish a sustainable immune barrier. Here we introduce a vaccine-delivery system with a combination of a needle-free injection (NFI) device and a SARS-CoV-2-Spike-specific mRNA-Lipid Nanoparticle (LNP) vaccine. The benefits are duller pain and a significant increase of immunogenicity compared to the canonical needle injection (NI). From physicochemical and bioactivity analyses, the structure of the mRNA-LNP maintains stability upon NFI, contradictory to the belief that LNPs are inclined towards destruction under the high-pressure conditions of NFI. Moreover, mRNA-LNP vaccine delivered by NFI induces significantly more binding and neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 variants than the same vaccine delivered by NI. Heterogeneous vaccination of BA.5-LNP vaccine with NFI enhanced the generation of neutralizing antibodies against Omicron BA.5 variants in rabbits previously vaccinated with non-BA.5-specific mRNA-LNP or other COVID-19 vaccines. NFI parameters can be adjusted to deliver mRNA-LNP subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Taken together, our results suggest that NFI-based mRNA-LNP vaccination is an effective substitute for the traditional NI-based mRNA-LNP vaccination.

Seedling dynamics play a crucial role in determining species distributions and coexistence. Exploring causes of variation in seedling dynamics can therefore provide key insights into the factors affecting these phenomena. We examined the relative importance of biotic neighborhood processes and habitat heterogeneity using survival data for 5,827 seedlings in 39 tree and shrub species over 2 years from an old-growth temperate forest in northeastern China. We found significant negative density-dependence effects on survival of tree seedlings, and limited effects of habitat heterogeneity (edaphic and topographic variables) on survival of shrub seedlings. The importance of negative density dependence on young tree seedling survival was replaced by habitat in tree seedlings ≥ 4 years old. As expected, negative density dependence was more apparent in gravity-dispersed species compared to wind-dispersed and animal-dispersed species. Moreover, we found that a community compensatory trend existed for trees. Therefore, although negative density dependence was not as pervasive as in other forest communities, it is an important mechanism for the maintenance of community diversity in this temperate forest. We conclude that both negative density dependence and habitat heterogeneity drive seedling survival, but their relative importance varies with seedling age classes and species traits.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a common diseases of the elderly, tuina is a widely used treatment. At present, there is a lack of supportive evidence on efficacy and safety of tuina for senile insomnia. The purpose of this systematic review is to assess the effectiveness and safety of tuina therapy in the treatment of senile insomnia. METHODS: Literature on tuina for senile insomnia in the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Wanfang, Chinese Scientific and Journal Database, Japanese medical database, Korean Robotics Institute Summer Scholars, and Thai-Journal Citation Index Center will be conducted to search from the creation of these databases. We will search the databases from the beginning to January 2022. The primary outcome was the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score, and the secondary outcomes included clinical efficacy and safety. RevMan 5.4.1 will be used for the meta-analysis. RESULTS: This study aimed to will prove the effectiveness and safety of tuina therapy for the treatment of insomnia in the elderly. CONCLUSION: This study provides up-to-date evidence of the effectiveness and safety of tuina for the treatment of senile insomnia. INPLASY REGISTRATION NUMBER: INPLASY2021110063. ETHICS AND COMMUNICATION: This systematic review will evaluate the effectiveness and safety of massage therapy for insomnia in the elderly population. As all the included data have been published, systematic reviews do not require ethical approval.

BACKGROUND: Secondary forests have become the major forest type worldwide. Research on spatial patterns and associations of tree species at different developmental stages may be informative in understanding the structure and dynamic processes of secondary forests. METHODS: In this study, we used point pattern analysis to analyze the spatial patterns and associations of tree species at seedling, sapling and adult stages in a 4ha plot in the montane secondary temperate forest of northeastern China. RESULTS: We found that species showed similar patterns at seedling, sapling and adult stages, and aggregation was the dominant pattern. The spatial patterns of tree species were mainly affected by habitat heterogeneity. In addition, the strength of positive or negative associated pattern among tree species would decrease with developmental stages, which attributed to neighborhood competition and plant size increasing. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that the spatial patterns and associations of tree species at seedling and sapling stages partly reflected that at adult stage; habitat heterogeneity and neighborhood competition jointly contributed to species coexistence in this secondary forest.

Overexploitation of iron mining in China has caused serious environmental pollution. Therefore, establishing a stable ecological restoration with vegetation in mining areas has gradually aroused people's awareness and obtained extensive concerns. This study aimed to evaluate vegetation restoration with Robinia pseudoacacia (RP), Acer mono (AM) and Pinus koraiensis (PK) in iron mining compared with unrestored area, to investigate the soil environment factors and microbial communities, and to better understand the correlations between soil environment factors and soil microbial communities. Vegetation restoration could reduce soil pH and alleviate soil alkaline, and remarkably increase soil nutrients, especially in RP site. Analysis of 16S rRNA and ITS rRNA gene sequences provided a total of 645,004 and 906, 276 valid sequences clustered into 7091 OTUs and 1689 OTUs at a 0.03 genetic distance for bacteria and fungi, respectively. The predominant bacterial and fungal phyla were Actinobacteria and Ascomycota in studied sites, respectively. Additionally, revegetation significantly increased the relative abundances of Proteobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Bacteroidetes and Patescibacteria, and decreased the relative abundance of Actinobacteria. Robinia pseudoacacia harbored the highest soil fungal community diversity, and bacterial Simpson index and Shannon index. Vegetation restoration with RP could clearly shifted soil communities compared to AM and PK. Along with the restoration of vegetation, the remarkable abiotic changes were the accumulation of total C, total N, total P, available P, available N and available K and the decreasing of soil pH, which were the most important factors affecting soil microbial communities. Our results addressed that Robinia pseudoacacia was the best preferable species than AM and PK in improving soil nutrients, soil community diversity and structure in Fe mining, providing a helpful guideline for selection of tree species.

To reveal the seedlings dynamics of dominant trees and their response to canopy changes (as indicated by changes in leaf area index), we analyzed the seedlings dynamics of dominant trees and canopy structure during forest regeneration based on three-year (2014 to 2016) censuses and hemispherical photography in a 4 hm2 forest dynamics monitoring plot. The results showed that canopy LAI first decreased and then increased during the survey period, with significant interannual difference. The seedlings of 12 dominant tree species showed notable response to the change of canopy structure, with the response varying among different tree species. The relative abundance or frequency of seedlings for neutral tree species generally increased with the decreases of canopy LAI. The relative abundance or frequency of seedlings of light-demanding tree species generally decreased with the increases of canopy LAI. In multi-response permutation procedures by analyzing the numeric composition and distribution of dominant tree seedlings, there was significant difference among the three censuses. Such interannual difference gradually decreased from 2014 to 2016. Significant change occurred in the indicator species of dominant tree seedlings, reflecting their responses to the changes of canopy structure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Observational studies have suggested an association between diabetes mellitus and the risk of surgical site infections (SSIs), but the results remain inconclusive. We conducted a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies to elucidate the relationship between diabetes mellitus and SSIs. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases and reviewed the reference lists of the retrieved articles to identify relevant studies. Associations were tested in subgroups representing different patient characteristics and study quality criteria. The random-effect model was used to calculate the overall relative risk (RR). RESULTS: Fourteen prospective cohort studies (N = 91,094 participants) were included in this meta-analysis, and the pooled crude RR was 2.02 (95% confidence interval, 1.68-2.43) with significant between-study heterogeneity observed (I(2) = 56.50%). Significant association was also detected after we derived adjusted RRs for studies not reporting the adjusted RRs and calculated the combined adjusted RR of the 14 studies (RR, 1.69; 95% confidence interval, 1.33-2.13). Results were consistent and statistically significant in all subgroups. Stratified analyses found the number of confounders adjusted for, sample size, and method of diabetes case ascertainment might be the potential sources of heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis further demonstrated the robustness of the result. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggests diabetes mellitus is significantly associated with increased risk of SSIs. Future studies are encouraged to reveal the mechanisms underlying this association.

A multi-stemmed growth form may be an important trait enabling the persistence of individual shrubs in the forest understory. With the aim of evaluating the role of multiple stems, neighbor competition and soil nutrients in shrub performance, we study the dynamics of two temperate multi-stemmed shrub species. We modeled stem growth and survival of Corylus mandshurica and Acer barbinerve in two temperate forests with differing structure in northeastern China. One forest was an old growth broad-leaved Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) mixed forest; the other was a secondary poplar-birch forest. Growth of the two species and survival of C. mandshurica increased with stem number in the old growth forest, but not the secondary forest, suggesting the benefits of a multi-stemmed growth form are facultative. C. mandshurica also suffered more from overstory neighbor competition in the old growth forest, which may suggest that this species is less shade-tolerant than A. barbinerve. Moreover, the performance of the two species were clearly influenced by understory neighbors and soil variables in the old growth forest relative to the secondary forest, which may be due to different forest structure. We conclude that multiple stems are not always important for the persistence of shrub species. Even within the same species, the multi-stemmed benefits might be facultative, differing among forests and neighborhood compositions.

Based on the shrub census of 600 quadrats (5 mx5 m) in a 25 hm2 plot of broad-leaved Korean pine mixed forest in Changbai Mountains, this paper analyzed the species composition, structure, and spatial distribution of shrubs in the forest. A total of 18 shrub species, including 6435 shrub individuals and 11369 stems, were found in the census, with Philadelphus schrenkii, Corylus mandshurica, and Acer barbinerve being the dominant species. P. schrenkii had the highest amounts of individuals and stems, occupying 40.6% and 33.4% of the total, respectively. There existed great differences in the clumpy ratio, stem number per clump, crown size, and basal diameter among the shrub species, and the height of different shrub species also varied significantly, with obvious vertical stratification observed in the community. The dominant species P. schrenkii had a wide distribution, while Sorbaria sorbifolia, Spiraea chamaedryfolia, S. salicifolia, and Euonymus pauciflorus had obvious heterogeneous distributions.

In order to understand the composition and spatiotemporal dynamics of the litter falls at community level in a broad-leaved Korean pine mixed forest in Changbai Mountains, litter falls were collected from 150 containers in a 25 hm2 permanent plot in 2008. The leaf litters in the containers were from 35 tree species, accounting for 67.3% of the total number (52) of the tree species with DBH > or =1 cm in the plot. The litter falls had a weight 29.39 kg, equivalent to 3918.4 kg x hm(-2) among which, broad leaves, miscellany, needle leaves, and branches occupied 61.7%, 18.0%, 11.7%, and 8.6%, respectively. About 83.8% of the broad leaves were from Tilia amurensis, Fraxinus mandshurica, Quercus mongolica, Acer mono, and Ulmus japonica. The litter falls showed an evident seasonal dynamics, with the peaks occurred from 13 September to 10 October, e.g., the litter falls from T. amurensis and Pinus koraiensis peaked in 13-26 September, while those from Q. mongolica, U. japonica, and A. pseudo-sieboldianum peaked in 27 September to 10 October. There was a great difference in the mass of the litter falls among the containers, e.g., with 150-200 g litters in 68 containers and >500 g litters in 1 container. The species number of the litter falls in a container was 18 in maximum, and was 12 in common (32 containers). Litter falls mass was positively proportional to the sum of the basal area at breast height of parent trees in the plot, and the amount of the litter falls in the containers was related with the locations of the containers, exhibiting an evident spatial heterogeneity in the plot.
