RESUMEN

In this paper we present all-in fiber tunable devices based on specially designed and optimized high-index photonic crystal fibers filled with nematic liquid crystals. A special host microstructured optical fibers have been designed and manufactured to ensure low-loss index guiding and mode field diameter matching to SMF-28 fiber, ensuring low losses on interconnections with leading in-out FC/PC connectorized pigtails. We present four types of tunable all-fiber devices: tunable retarders with tuning range as high as 20 λ, tunable polarizers with variable axis of polarization and continuously tunable polarization dependent losses, tunable and fully controllable polarization controller and finally indeterministic depolarizer in which depolarization is caused by random thermodynamic process. We also present a cost-effective method to achieve change in the direction of the steering electric field, which was controlled by custom-made programable controllers. Finally, we present a method for effective packaging for the proposed devices.

RESUMEN

A fully functional miniaturized projection head below 5 cm3 is presented, using computer-generated holograms dynamically displayed on a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. Spatial division of the modulator is used for color projection without color breakup, and specially designed, anti-reflection coated prisms ensure simple light paths with small losses. Real-time calculations are performed on a remote server with on-the-fly compression of holographic fringes. Cloud computing allows 1 W of local electrical power usage and apparent image brightness equivalent to 15-500 lm/W efficiency, depending on the displayed content. The properties of the projector allow future applications in handheld displays.

RESUMEN

A new sensor configuration is proposed for simultaneous strain and temperature monitoring in a composite material that is based on a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) written in a highly birefringent (HB) polarization-maintaining fiber. The sensor is designed in the reflective configuration in which the CFBG acts both as a reflector and a sensing element. Since CFBG and HB fiber induce changes in the state of polarization (SOP), interference between polarization modes in the reflected spectrum is observed and analyzed. We used a simple readout setup to enable fast, linear operation of strain sensing as well simultaneous strain and temperature measurements in the composite.

RESUMEN

An extremely simple setup for real-time color digital holography using single-mode fibers as light guides and a directional coupler as a beam-splitting device is presented. With the directional coupler we have two object beams and one residual crosstalk used as a reference beam. This facilitates the adjustment and improves robustness. With the use of graphics processing units, real-time hologram reconstruction was possible. Due to adaptation of the optical setup and scaling, zero-order and complex image influence is highly reduced.
