RESUMEN

Precise characterization of parallel-aligned liquid crystal on silicon microdisplays has an important impact in many advanced photonics applications. We show liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) modeled as a non-absorbent reciprocal device. Combined with time-average Stokes polarimetry, LCoS enables us to demonstrate robust measurements across the whole applied voltage range for the retardance and its flicker, and also as a novelty for the director orientation. We obtain that the director orientation changes across the voltage range, especially at larger applied voltages. This is a small effect, but it may provide a deeper insight into the internal dynamics in the liquid crystal layer, and in sensitive phase-only applications will produce a coupling between amplitude and phase.

RESUMEN

Carbon-bridged bis(aminoaryl) oligo(para-phenylenevinylene)s have been prepared and their optical, electrochemical, and structural properties analyzed. Their radical cations are class III and class II mixed-valence systems, depending on the molecular size, and they show electronic couplings which are among the largest for the self-exchange reaction of purely organic molecules. In their dication states, the antiferromagnetic coupling is progressively tuned with size from quinoidal closed-shell to open-shell biradicals. The data prove that the electronic coupling in the radical cations and the singlet-triplet gap in the dications show similar small attenuation factors, thus allowing charge/spin transfer over rather large distances.

RESUMEN

The effect of varying film thickness (h) on the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties of 0.5 wt.% perylenediimide-doped polystyrene waveguides is reported. The threshold dependence on h, not previously investigated in detail, is analyzed in terms of the film absorption and photoluminescence, the confinement of the fundamental waveguide mode (TE0), and the presence of high-order modes. For h<400 nm and down to 150 nm, the ASE wavelength blueshifts, while the linewidth and threshold increase. The detrimental ASE operation in very thin films is due to the low absorption as well as to the poor confinement of the TE0 mode.

RESUMEN

Single-mode second-order distributed feedback (DFB) lasers with low threshold, based on polystyrene films doped with 30 wt. % of the hole-transporting organic molecule N,N'-bis (3-methylphenyl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine (TPD) are reported. The laser emission wavelength was tuned between 415 and 427 nm by film thickness variation. The effectiveness of the DFB grating in improving the laser performance is evidenced by the observation of linewidths and laser thresholds lower than those of the amplified spontaneous emission characteristics shown by films without gratings. The use of holographic lithography as the technique for grating recording has allowed us to prepare large samples in a fast, versatile, and simple manner.

RESUMEN

This paper aims to review the recent advances achieved in the field of organic solid-state lasers with respect to the usage of semiconducting organic molecules and oligomers in the form of thin films as active laser media. We mainly focus on the work performed in the last few years by our research group. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties, by optical pump, of various types of molecules doped into polystyrene films in waveguide configuration, are described. The various systems investigated include N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine (TPD), several perilenediimide derivatives (PDIs), as well as two oligo-phenylenevinylene derivatives. The ASE characteristics, i.e., threshold, emission wavelength, linewidth, and photostability are compared with that of other molecular materials investigated in the literature.

RESUMEN

We analyze absorption, photoluminescence (PL), and resonant Raman spectra of N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-diamine (TPD), with the aim of providing a microscopic interpretation of a significant Stokes shift of about 0.5 eV that makes this material suitable for stimulated emission. The optical spectra were measured for TPD dissolved in toluene and chloroform, as well as for polystyrene films doped with varying amounts of TPD. In addition, we measured preresonant and resonant Raman spectra, giving direct access to the vibrational modes elongated in the relaxed excited geometry of the molecule. The experimental data are interpreted with calculations of the molecular geometry in the electronic ground state and the optically excited state using density functional theory. Several strongly elongated high-frequency modes within the carbon rings results in a vibronic progression with a calculated spacing of 158 meV, corroborated by the observation of vibrational sidebands in the PL spectra. The peculiarities of the potential energy surfaces related to a twisting around the central bond in the biphenyl core of TPD allow to quantify the asymmetry between the line shapes observed in absorption and emission.

RESUMEN

Three-in-one: A novel distyrylbenzene-based material forms J-type aggregates in single crystals with highly polarized and bright red emission, giving rise to optical gain narrowing, for which different mechanisms (amplified spontaneous emission, laser emission and stimulated resonance Raman scattering) are observed. These are correlated with the favorable intrinsic and macroscopic properties of the crystal, in particular to the orientation of the molecules to the crystal surface.

RESUMEN

The presence of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) by optical pump in polystyrene films doped with N,N'-di(10-nonadecyl)perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (PDI-N) in a range of PDI-N concentrations between 0.25 and 5 wt. % is reported. Gain coefficients up to 10 cm(-1), at a pump intensity of 74 kW/cm2, were obtained. The lowest thresholds (approximately 15 kW/cm2) and largest photostabilities measured at 50% (approximately 50 min, i.e., 30,000 pump pulses) were obtained for concentrations up to 1 wt. %. The observation of an increase in the ASE threshold and a decrease in the photostability for larger concentrations is attributed to the presence of aggregated species.
