RESUMEN

Sweet syndrome is the most characteristic of the neutrophilic dermatoses. We performed a retrospective study of patients with Sweet syndrome seen in our department between 2001 and 2009, inclusive; the aims were to define the patient profile and to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological differences between subgroups. There were 24 patients (13 women and 11 men). The age distribution was similar in both sexes and showed 2 peaks, one in the fourth decade and the other in the eighth decade. The etiology was predominantly infectious or inflammatory, followed by the idiopathic form. There were 4 cases of paraneoplastic disease, 2 of which involved solid-organ tumors. One case was associated with the administration of infliximab. Symptoms persisted longer in cases that were idiopathic or that developed in the context of neoplastic disease.

RESUMEN

Bovine pituitary glands contain one or more factors that are important for keratinocyte proliferation in serum-free culture medium. We used a tissue culture system in which the growth of keratinocytes in basal medium (KBM) containing insulin was dependent upon exogenous growth factors. Using this experimental system, we began to purify and characterize the pituitary factor(s) necessary for clonal growth of human keratinocytes in serum-free medium. Proteins of approximately 150 kDa and 95 kDa bound specifically to living keratinocytes, and we suggest that the 95 kDa protein is a likely novel mitogen. Although prolactin has been previously identified as a pituitary hormone that may act as an in vitro mitogen for keratinocytes, imunoblots indicated that the 95 kDa protein was unrelated to prolactin. Furthermore, the 95 kDa protein showed high homology with a bovine 90 kDa heat shock protein in the limited sequencing of an internal peptide.

RESUMEN

Cutaneous-mucosal lesions constitute one of the most frequent extraintestinal manifestations of Crohn's disease and in some cases may be the first symptom of intestinal disease. We describe the case of a 45-year-old female patient who sought medical help for genital tumefaction of 20 years' evolution. For the previous 15 years, she had been experiencing digestive symptomatology attributed to irritable bowel syndrome. Two months before the consultation, and coinciding with aggravation of the condition, the patient had been diagnosed with colonic Crohn's disease. Skin biopsy of the labia minora revealed sarcoid granulomas. The results of microbiological studies (staining for microorganisms and cultures) were negative. A diagnosis of metastatic vulvar Crohn's disease was made and, treatment with metronidazole was started, which improved the genital edema after 2 months. Genital lymphedema is an exceptionally rare manifestation of metastatic Crohn's disease that may appear several years before intestinal symptomatology develops. Treatment with metronidazole seems to be a good therapeutic option.

RESUMEN

Three cases of pseudocyst of the auricle were studied. All three occurred in male, 38, 54, and 23 years old; all had a solitary nodule of the anthelix. Such pseudocyst have a characteristic localization and are not caused by trauma and have a serous, cystic content. The cystic formations develop from degeneration and liquefaction within the auricular cartilage. We believe that the name proposed by Engel "pseudocyst of the auricle" can be appropriated.

RESUMEN

Sweat gland origin of Paget disease is demonstrated by the presence of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). We studied the expression of CEA and keratin in two cases of extramammary Paget disease. Our results are commented.

RESUMEN

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) has been studied extensively, in association with visceral tumors and normal tissues. Although CEA has been demonstrated in sweat gland cutaneous tumors, little is known about its presence in skin and epithelial related tumors. We studied the presence of CEA and keratin in squamous cell and basal cell carcinoma using immunohistochemical techniques. Its distribution related with differentiation, proliferation and malignant potential is observed. The expression of both antigens is correlated.

RESUMEN

The authors studied the peripheral blood lymphocytes in any autoimmune diseases. In scleroderma the T-lymphocytes and ratio T4/T8 are decreased and B-lymphocytes are normal. In the LEDC the T-lymphocytes are decreased and B-lymphocytes are increased. In dermatomyositis the B-lymphocytes are increased and T-lymphocytes are decreased, the ratio T4/T8 is normal.

RESUMEN

A determination of the lymphocyte levels in blood and cutaneous infiltrates of 60 patients complaining of different dermatoses were carried out by the authors. The method used in the experience was that of Preud'homme and Flandrin (1974). In most of the investigated cases the results could be considered as normal (8-22%). In one case of actinic reticuloid and 2 cases of plane xanthoma with photosensitivity the levels were considerably raised. The authors belleve that the B-lymphocytes determination could be worth investigation in the photosensitive dermatoses.

RESUMEN

The authors studied human epidermal differentiation in normal skin and skin cultured according to Green's method. No differences was observed except for the filaggrin and involucrin patterns; the lectins revealed identical patterns in normal and cultured human epidermis. The ultrastructural study verified a similar morphology in both types of epidermis.

RESUMEN

We present a new case of porokeratosis plantaris palmaris et disseminata (PPPD), observe in it a histological picture of cornoid lamella in palms, soles, arms, legs and trunk. In this dermatosis, mediant lectins and involucrin to establish keratinocytes alteration. The immunohistochemical studies have reveals not normal formation in the envelope cornea, and fundamentally D-galactose show a marked diminution in the cell membrane.

RESUMEN

The authors study a case of Hodgkin's disease type Rye III with specific infiltration of the skin. In cutaneous biopsy we find Reed-Stenberg cells. With treatment the cutaneous lesion diminishes without disappearing. A discussion is made about the Hodgkin's disease and its relation with lymphomatoid papulosis and its differential diagnostic with cutaneous lymphomas and the pathogenic way of cutaneous infiltration.

RESUMEN

The authors studied the expression of CD1 and HLA-Dr antigen in benign and malignant melanic tumors to known if were the melanoma's cells or Langerhans cells, presents on the tumor, which exhibited the HLA-Dr antigens, and if the HLA-Dr expression was related to volume, depth and metastatic characteristics. These antigens were studied with the monoclonal antibodies labelled to avidin-biotin-peroxidase system. The results shows than the proportion between the number of Langerhans cells and HLA-Dr positive cells is inverse. No differences were found between the expression of the HLA-Dr antigens and number of Langerhans cells and volume, depth or metastatic characteristics.
