RESUMEN

Recently, viruses have been shown to regulate selective autophagy for productive infections. For instance, human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), activates selective autophagy of mitochondria, termed mitophagy, thereby inhibiting antiviral innate immune responses during lytic infection in host cells. We previously demonstrated that HHV-8 viral interferon regulatory factor 1 (vIRF-1) plays a crucial role in lytic replication-activated mitophagy by interacting with cellular mitophagic proteins, including NIX and TUFM. However, the precise molecular mechanisms by which these interactions lead to mitophagy activation remain to be determined. Here, we show that vIRF-1 binds directly to mammalian autophagy-related gene 8 (ATG8) proteins, preferentially GABARAPL1 in infected cells, in an LC3-interacting region (LIR)-independent manner. Accordingly, we identified key residues in vIRF-1 and GABARAPL1 required for mutual interaction and demonstrated that the interaction is essential for mitophagy activation and HHV-8 productive replication. Interestingly, the mitophagy receptor NIX promotes vIRF-1-GABARAPL1 interaction, and NIX/vIRF-1-induced mitophagy is significantly inhibited in GABARAPL1-deficient cells. Moreover, a vIRF-1 variant defective in GABARAPL1 binding substantially loses the ability to induce vIRF-1/NIX-induced mitophagy. These results suggest that NIX supports vIRF-1 activity as a mitophagy mediator. In addition, we found that NIX promotes vIRF-1 aggregation and stabilizes aggregated vIRF-1. Together, these findings indicate that vIRF-1 plays a role as a viral mitophagy mediator that can be activated by a cellular mitophagy receptor.

2D MXene-Ti3 C2 Tx holds great promise in various electronic applications, especially for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding devices and supercapacitors. Ti3 C2 Tx synthesis typically involves the use of hazardous fluorine-containing chemicals that can result in the formation of inert fluoride functional groups on the surface of Ti3 C2 Tx , severely degrading its properties and posing a threat to the performance of electron transfer among electrical devices. Herein, a supercritical carbon dioxide-based ternary solution (scCO2 /DMSO/HCl) to produce fluoride-free Ti3 C2 Tx in mild conditions (via 0.5 m HCl, 20 MPa, 32 °C) is reported. The fluorine-free Ti3 C2 Tx films electrode presents an excellent gravimetric capacitance of 320 F g-1 at 2 mV s-1 in 1 m H2 SO4 . Besides, it is demonstrated that fluorine-free Ti3 C2 Tx films exhibit outstanding EMI shielding efficiency of 53.12 dB at 2.5 µm thickness. The findings offer a mild and practical approach to producing fluoride-free Ti3 C2 Tx and open opportunities for exploring MXenes' potential applications in various fields.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has officially ended, the persistent challenge of long-COVID or post-acute COVID sequelae (PASC) continues to impact societies globally, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing research into its mechanisms and therapeutic approaches. Our team has recently developed a novel humanized ACE2 mouse model (hACE2ki) designed explicitly for long-COVID/PASC research. This model exhibits human ACE2 expression in tissue and cell-specific patterns akin to mouse Ace2. When we exposed young adult hACE2ki mice (6 weeks old) to various SARS-CoV-2 lineages, including WA, Delta, and Omicron, at a dose of 5 × 105 PFU/mouse via nasal instillation, the mice demonstrated distinctive phenotypes characterized by differences in viral load in the lung, trachea, and nasal turbinate, weight loss, and changes in pro-inflammatory cytokines and immune cell profiles in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Notably, no mortality was observed in this age group. Further, to assess the model's relevance for long-COVID studies, we investigated tau protein pathologies, which are linked to Alzheimer's disease, in the brains of these mice post SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our findings revealed the accumulation and longitudinal propagation of tau, confirming the potential of our hACE2ki mouse model for preclinical studies of long-COVID.

Circadian clocks are intracellular systems that orchestrate metabolic processes in anticipation of sunrise and sunset by providing an internal representation of local time. Because the ~24-h metabolic rhythms they produce are important to health across diverse life forms there is growing interest in their mechanisms. However, mechanistic studies are challenging in vivo due to the complex, that is, poorly defined, milieu of live cells. Recently, we reconstituted the intact circadian clock of cyanobacteria in vitro. It oscillates autonomously and remains phase coherent for many days with a fluorescence-based readout that enables real-time observation of individual clock proteins and promoter DNA simultaneously under defined conditions without user intervention. We found that reproducibility of the reactions required strict adherence to the quality of each recombinant clock protein purified from Escherichia coli. Here, we provide protocols for preparing in vitro clock samples so that other labs can ask questions about how changing environments, like temperature, metabolites, and protein levels are reflected in the core oscillator and propagated to regulation of transcription, providing deeper mechanistic insights into clock biology.

The widely held assumption that any important scientific information would be available in English underlies the underuse of non-English-language science across disciplines. However, non-English-language science is expected to bring unique and valuable scientific information, especially in disciplines where the evidence is patchy, and for emergent issues where synthesising available evidence is an urgent challenge. Yet such contribution of non-English-language science to scientific communities and the application of science is rarely quantified. Here, we show that non-English-language studies provide crucial evidence for informing global biodiversity conservation. By screening 419,679 peer-reviewed papers in 16 languages, we identified 1,234 non-English-language studies providing evidence on the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation interventions, compared to 4,412 English-language studies identified with the same criteria. Relevant non-English-language studies are being published at an increasing rate in 6 out of the 12 languages where there were a sufficient number of relevant studies. Incorporating non-English-language studies can expand the geographical coverage (i.e., the number of 2° × 2° grid cells with relevant studies) of English-language evidence by 12% to 25%, especially in biodiverse regions, and taxonomic coverage (i.e., the number of species covered by the relevant studies) by 5% to 32%, although they do tend to be based on less robust study designs. Our results show that synthesising non-English-language studies is key to overcoming the widespread lack of local, context-dependent evidence and facilitating evidence-based conservation globally. We urge wider disciplines to rigorously reassess the untapped potential of non-English-language science in informing decisions to address other global challenges. There has been a growing emphasis on facile preparation of binary heterogeneous composite materials. Leveraging the eco-friendly efficiency of supercritical CO2 technology, we achieved precise control over the influencing factors of mass transfer, enabling the accurate modulation of the resulting product morphology and properties. In the current study, CuxO/ZrOy composite materials were prepared using this technology and calcined to obtain electrode materials for the detection of cysteine (Cys). Essential comprehensive characterization techniques were employed to elucidate the heterojunction. The resulting electrode demonstrated a linear response to Cys within a concentration range of 0.5 nM to 1 µM, featuring a high sensitivity of 1035 µA·cm-2·µM-1 and a low detection limit of 97.3 nM. Thus, establishing a novel avenue for nonenzyme-based electrochemical sensors tailored for biologically active Cys detection through the implementation of a heterogeneous structure.

The angiotensin II type 2 receptor (AT2R) is a well-established component of the renin-angiotensin system and is known to counteract classical activation of this system and protect against organ damage. Pharmacological activation of the AT2R has significant therapeutic benefits, including vasodilation, natriuresis, anti-inflammatory activity, and improved insulin sensitivity. However, the precise biological functions of the AT2R in maintaining homeostasis in liver tissue remain largely unexplored. In this study, we found that the AT2R facilitates liver repair and regeneration following acute injury by deactivating Hippo signaling and that interleukin-6 transcriptionally upregulates expression of the AT2R in hepatocytes through STAT3 acting as a transcription activator binding to promoter regions of the AT2R. Subsequently, elevated AT2R levels activate downstream signaling via heterotrimeric G protein Gα12/13-coupled signals to induce Yap activity, thereby contributing to repair and regeneration processes in the liver. Conversely, a deficiency in the AT2R attenuates regeneration of the liver while increasing susceptibility to acetaminophen-induced liver injury. Administration of an AT2R agonist significantly enhances the repair and regeneration capacity of injured liver tissue. Our findings suggest that the AT2R acts as an upstream regulator in the Hippo pathway and is a potential target in the treatment of liver damage.

Weeds pose multifaceted challenges in rice cultivation, leading to substantial economic losses through reduced yield and poor grain quality. Harnessing the natural genetic diversity in germplasm collections becomes crucial for identifying novel herbicide resistance loci in crops. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on 475 rice accessions from the KRICE depository, assessing their response to TFT (tefuryltrione) and probing the underlying HIS1 (HPPD INHIBITOR SENSITIVE 1) genotypic variations. The HIS1 gene, responsible for detoxifying benzobicyclon (BBC) and imparting broad-spectrum herbicide resistance, holds significant promise in rice breeding. This study explores the genetic landscape of HIS1 within Korean rice collection (KRICE), aiming to unveil genetic variations, haplotype diversity, and evolutionary relationships across diverse rice ecotypes. The indica ecotype showed the highest nucleotide diversity, while the wild and temperate japonica groups exhibited low diversity, hinting at selective sweeps and possible population expansion. Negative Tajima's D values in temperate japonica and wild groups indicate an excess of low-frequency mutations, potentially resulting from selective sweeps. In contrast, with positive Tajima's D values, admixture, indica, and aus groups suggest balancing selection. Furthermore, haplotype analysis uncovered 42 distinct haplotypes within KRICE, with four shared haplotypes between cultivated and wild accessions, four specific to cultivated accessions, and 34 specific to wild types. Phenotypic assessments of these haplotypes revealed that three haplotypes, viz., Hap_1 (predominant in japonica), Hap_2 (predominant in indica), and Hap_3 (specific to indica), displayed significant differences from aus-specific Hap_4 and indica-specific Hap_5. This study offers insights into genetic diversity, selective pressures, and ecotype-specific responses, ultimately paving the way for developing HPPD-inhibiting herbicide-resistant rice cultivars.

BACKGROUND: The liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2) plays a pivotal role in the host's immune response against pathogenic microorganisms. Numerous such antimicrobial peptides have recently been shown to mitigate infection risk in fish, and studying those harboured by the economically important fish Acrossocheilus fasciatus is imperative for enhancing its immune responses against pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, we cloned and sequenced LEAP2 cDNA from A. fasciatus to examine its expression in immune tissues and investigate the structure-activity relationships of its intramolecular disulphide bonds. RESULTS: The predicted amino acid sequence of A. fasciatus LEAP2 was found to include a signal peptide, pro-domain, and mature peptide. Sequence analysis indicated that A. fasciatus LEAP2 is a member of the fish LEAP2A cluster and is closely related to Cyprinus carpio LEAP2A. A. fasciatus LEAP2 transcripts were expressed in various tissues, with the head kidney exhibiting the highest mRNA levels. Upon exposure to Aeromonas hydrophila infection, LEAP2 expression was significantly upregulated in the liver, head kidney, and spleen. A mature peptide of A. fasciatus LEAP2, consisting of two disulphide bonds (Af-LEAP2-cys), and a linear form of the LEAP2 mature peptide (Af-LEAP2) were chemically synthesised. The circular dichroism spectroscopy result shows differences between the secondary structures of Af-LEAP2 and Af-LEAP2-cys, with a lower proportion of alpha helix and a higher proportion of random coil in Af-LEAP2. Af-LEAP2 exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against most tested bacteria, including Acinetobacter guillouiae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, and Staphylococcus warneri. In contrast, Af-LEAP2-cys demonstrated weak or no antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria. Af-LEAP2 had a disruptive effect on bacterial cell membrane integrity, whereas Af-LEAP2-cys did not exhibit this effect. Additionally, neither Af-LEAP2 nor Af-LEAP2-cys displayed any observable ability to hydrolyse the genomic DNA of P. aeruginosa. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides clear evidence that linear LEAP2 exhibits better antibacterial activity than oxidised LEAP2, thereby confirming, for the first time, this phenomenon in fish.

A highly efficient chlorobenzene-degrading strain was isolated from the sludge of a sewage treatment plant associated with a pharmaceutical company. The strain exhibited a similarity of over 99.9% with multiple strains of Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens. Therefore, the strain was suggested to be P. ureafaciens LY. This novel strain exhibited a broad spectrum of pollutant degradation capabilities, effectively degrading chlorobenzene and other organic pollutants, such as 1, 2, 4-trichlorobenzene, phenol, and xylene. Moreover, P. ureafaciens LY co-metabolized mixtures of chlorobenzene with 1, 2, 4-trichlorobenzene or phenol. Evaluation of its degradation efficiency showed that it achieved an impressive degradation rate of 94.78% for chlorobenzene within 8 h. The Haldane-Andrews model was used to describe the growth of P. ureafaciens LY under specific pollutants and its concentrations, revealing a maximum specific growth rate (µmax ) of 0.33 h-1 . The isolation and characterization of P. ureafaciens LY, along with its ability to degrade chlorobenzene, provides valuable insights for the development of efficient and eco-friendly approaches to mitigate chlorobenzene contamination. Additionally, investigation of the degradation performance of the strain in the presence of other pollutants offers important information for understanding the complexities of co-metabolism in mixed-pollutant environments.

Administration of tuberculosis preventive therapy (TPT) to individuals with latent tuberculosis infection is an important facet of global tuberculosis control. The use of long-acting injectable (LAI) drug formulations may simplify and shorten regimens for this indication. Rifapentine and rifabutin have antituberculosis activity and physiochemical properties suitable for LAI formulation, but there are limited data available for determining the target exposure profiles required for efficacy in TPT regimens. The objective of this study was to determine exposure-activity profiles of rifapentine and rifabutin to inform development of LAI formulations for TPT. We used a validated paucibacillary mouse model of TPT in combination with dynamic oral dosing of both drugs to simulate and understand exposure-activity relationships to inform posology for future LAI formulations. This work identified several LAI-like exposure profiles of rifapentine and rifabutin that, if achieved by LAI formulations, could be efficacious as TPT regimens and thus can serve as experimentally determined targets for novel LAI formulations of these drugs. We present novel methodology to understand the exposure-response relationship and inform the value proposition for investment in development of LAI formulations that have utility beyond latent tuberculosis infection.

Controlling crystallization and grain growth is crucial for realizing highly efficient hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, enhanced PSC photovoltaic performance and stability by accelerating perovskite crystallization and grain growth via 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanosheet additives incorporated into the active perovskite layer are demonstrated. In situ X-ray scattering and infrared thermal imaging during the perovskite annealing process revealed the highly thermally conductive hBN nanosheets promoted the phase conversion and grain growth in the perovskite layer by facilitating a more rapid and spatially uniform temperature rise within the perovskite film. Complementary structural, physicochemical, and electrical characterizations further showed that the hBN nanosheets formed a physical barrier at the perovskite grain boundaries and the interfaces with charge transport layers, passivating defects, and retarding ion migration. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of the PSC is improved from 17.4% to 19.8%, along with enhanced device stability, retaining ≈90% of the initial efficiency even after 500 h ambient air storage. The results not only highlight 2D hBN as an effective additive for PSCs but also suggest enhanced thermal transport as one of the pathways for improved PSC performance by 2D material additives in general.

Sepsis is a severe syndrome caused by the imbalance of the host response to infection, accompanied by multiple organ damage, especially acute lung injury. SET Domain-Containing 2 (SETD2) is a methyltransferase catalyzing H3 lysine 36 trimethylation (H3K36me3) that regulates multiple biological processes. This study focused on explicating the action of SETD2 on macrophage function in sepsis and the precise mechanism involved. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), and Western blotting were used to determine expression. Luciferase reporter assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay were conducted to detect the binding of SETD2 or H3K36me3 with the hypoxia-inducible factor 1, alpha subunit (Hif1a) gene. A sepsis-induced acute lung injury model was constructed via cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). SETD2 was decreased in RAW 264.7 cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Besides, SETD2 suppressed M1 macrophage polarization and glycolysis caused by LPS. HIF-1α was enhanced in RAW 264.7 cells stimulated by LPS and inversely related to SETD2 expression. In addition, SETD2-catalyzed H3K36me3 bound to the Hif1a gene to modulate HIF-1α expression. Furthermore, Hif1a silencing suppressed Setd2 silencing-induced M1 macrophage polarization and glycolysis in RAW 264.7 cells. Moreover, overexpression of Setd2 inhibited CLP-induced lung injury and M1 macrophage polarization in mice. SETD2 suppressed M1 macrophage polarization and glycolysis via regulating HIF-1α through catalyzing H3K36me3 in sepsis.

Blends of block copolymers can form phases and exhibit features distinct from the constituent materials. We study thin film blends of cylinder-forming and lamellar-forming block copolymers across a range of substrate surface energies. Blend materials are responsive to interfacial energy, allowing selection of pure or coexisting phases based on surface chemistry. Blending stabilizes certain motifs that are typically metastable, and can be used to generate pure hexagonally perforated lamellar thin films across a range of film thicknesses and surface energies. This tolerant behavior is ascribed to the ability of blend materials to redistribute chains to stabilize otherwise high-energy defect structures. The blend responsiveness allows the morphology to be spatially defined through multi-tone chemical surface patterns.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have become one of the state-of-the-art photovoltaic technologies due to their facile solution-based fabrication processes combined with extremely high photovoltaic performance originating from excellent optoelectronic properties such as strong light absorption, high charge mobility, long free charge carrier diffusion length, and tunable direct bandgap. However, the poor intrinsic stability of hybrid perovskites under environmental stresses including light, heat, and moisture, which is often associated with high defect density in the perovskite, has limited the large-scale commercialization and deployment of PSCs. The use of process additives, which can be included in various subcomponent layers in the PSC, has been identified as one of the effective approaches that can address these issues and improve the photovoltaic performance. Among various additives that have been explored, two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged recently due to their unique structures and properties that can enhance the photovoltaic performance and device stability by improving perovskite crystallization, defect passivation, and charge transport. Here, we provide a review of the recent progresses in 2D material additives for improving the PSC performance based on key representative 2D material systems, including graphene and its derivatives, transitional metal dichalcogenides, and black phosphorous, providing a useful guideline for further exploiting unique nanomaterial additives for more efficient and stable PSCs in the near future.

In this study, a simple yet versatile method is proposed for identifying the number of exfoliated graphene layers transferred on an oxide substrate from optical images, utilizing a limited number of input images for training, paired with a more traditional number of a few thousand well-published Github images for testing and predicting. Two thresholding approaches, namely the standard deviation-based approach and the linear regression-based approach, were employed in this study. The method specifically leverages the red, green, and blue color channels of image pixels and creates a correlation between the green channel of the background and the green channel of the various layers of graphene. This method proves to be a feasible alternative to deep learning-based graphene recognition and traditional microscopic analysis. The proposed methodology performs well under conditions where the effect of surrounding light on the graphene-on-oxide sample is minimum and allows rapid identification of the various graphene layers. The study additionally addresses the functionality of the proposed methodology with nonhomogeneous lighting conditions, showcasing successful prediction of graphene layers from images that are lower in quality compared to typically published in literature. In all, the proposed methodology opens up the possibility for the non-destructive identification of graphene layers from optical images by utilizing a new and versatile method that is quick, inexpensive, and works well with fewer images that are not necessarily of high quality.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis has a devastating psychological impact on patients' quality of life. However, the relationship between suicidality and psoriasis remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study analysed and compared the risk of suicidality (suicidal ideation, suicide attempt and completed suicide) between patients with psoriasis and the general population. METHODS: This nationwide, population-based, retrospective, cohort study analysed the Korean National Health Insurance Service claim data from 2005 to 2018. RESULTS: The study included 348,439 patients with psoriasis aged over 18 years and with age- and sex-matched controls. The risk of suicidality was higher in the psoriasis group than in the control group [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.21; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.18-1.24]. The aHR of suicidality was higher in the psoriatic arthritis group (aHR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.39-1.54) than in the psoriasis-alone group (aHR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.13-1.20). However, the severity of psoriasis and suicidality showed no correlation (mild psoriasis group: aHR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.18-1.25; moderate-to-severe psoriasis group: aHR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.10-1.23). CONCLUSION: Patients with psoriasis have an increased risk of suicidality. In particular, the presence of arthritis in patients had a more significant effect on the risk of suicidality.

BACKGROUND: Submucous cleft palate (SMCP) is a subgroup of cleft palate that can present as velopharyngeal insufficiency due to muscle displacement. The pharyngeal flap and Furlow palatoplasty have been introduced to correct SMCP patient with velopharyngeal insufficiency. However, pharyngeal flap and Furlow palatoplasty can occur various complications. We consider the overlapping intravelar veloplasty (IVVP) can overcome these complications. Therefore, we present the speech outcomes of overlapping IVVP for the treatment of patients with SMCP. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 12 patients with SMCP underwent overlapping IVVP between April 2016 and October 2018. The patients who underwent speech evaluation, nasometry, and nasoendoscopy before and after surgery and who were followed up for >18 months were enrolled in this study. RESULTS: The average age of the patients was 5 years (range, 3-11 years) and the postoperative follow-up period ranged from 18 to 24 months (mean, 20 months). The preoperative perceptual speech evaluation was moderate and the postoperative evaluation was normal ( P < 0.01). The preoperative and postoperative nasalance scores obtained using a nasometer were 37.00 and 12.50, respectively, ( P < 0.01). Preoperative and postoperative velopharyngeal movements were grades 3 and 0, respectively, ( P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that overlapping IVVP could provide successful correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency in patients with SMCP, including relatively old patients.

The aim of the study was to test whether the cytokine profile could be used as a marker to differentiate between Epstein-Barr virus-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH) and Kawasaki disease (KD). A total of 70 hospitalized children with HLH and KD admitted to hospital for the first time from March 2017 to December 2021 were enrolled in this study. Fifty-five healthy children were enrolled as normal controls. All patients and normal controls were tested for the six cytokines including interleukin-2 (IL-2), interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) by flow cytometry. IL-10 and IFN-γ levels were significantly higher in children with EBV-HLH than in the KD, IL-6 was lower in EBV-HLH patients than in the KD. IL-10/IL-6 ratio, IFN-γ/IL-6 ratio and IL10/IFN-γ ratio in children with EBV-HLH were significantly much higher than children in the KD group. When the diagnostic cutoff values of IL-10, IFN-γ, IL-10/IL-6 ratio and IFN-γ/IL-6 ratio were >13.2 pg/ml, >71.0 pg/ml, >0.37 and >1.34, respectively, the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnosis of EBV-HLH disease were 91.7% and 97.1%, 72.2% and 97.1%, 86.1% and 100.0%, and 75.0% and 97.1%, respectively. Notably high IL-10 and IFN-γ and moderately elevated IL-6 suggest the diagnosis of EBV-HLH, while high IL-6 levels with low IL-10 or IFN-γ concentration would suggest KD. Additionally, IL-10/IL-6 ratio or IFN-γ/IL-6 ratio could be used as an index to differentiate between EBV-HLH and KD.

INTRODUCTION: Although thrombolytic therapy is the standard treatment for massive pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), it is often ineffective in patients with circulatory collapse. Surgical embolectomy is another treatment option, but whether it is absolutely necessary is controversial. We sought to evaluate the outcomes of patients with massive PTE treated with intensive critical care including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) without thrombolytic therapy or surgical embolectomy. METHODS: We analyzed 39 patients who were treated for massive PTE from January 2011 to June 2019. Massive PTE was treated with anticoagulation and hemodynamic support at an intensive care unit. ECMO was applied in patients with circulatory collapse. The computed tomography (CT) obstruction index and the ratio of the right ventricle to left ventricle short-axis diameters (RV/LV) were measured using serial CT angiography to confirm changes in pulmonary emboli and RV strain. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients were in cardiogenic shock, and 15 of them needed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Fifteen patients were treated with ECMO and nine of them were weaned successfully. The overall in-hospital mortality was 23% (9/39). On the follow-up CT scan after 6 months, residual PTE was observed in 10 patients and their median CT obstruction index was 6.25 % (range 2.5-35). The initial mean RV/LV ratio was 1.8 ± 0.47 and the value measured at follow-up CT decreased to less than 1 (0.9 ± 0.1). CONCLUSIONS: Intensive critical care with heparin alone and timely ECMO support without thrombolytic therapy could be an effective treatment option in patients with acute massive PTE.
