Attention is one of the basic cognitive functions sensitive to high altitude, and most studies have focussed on exposure times of approximately 3 years; however, it is unclear how attention changes in migrants who have lived and worked at high altitude for nearly 20 years. We explored the dynamics of attentional networks and neurophysiological mechanisms in migrants over 3-20 years using the Attentional Network Test combined with Electrocardiograph and Electroencephalography and found a consistent quadratic correlation between exposure and executive control efficiency, P3 amplitude and heart rate variability (HRV), with a decrease followed by an increase/relative stability, with approximately 10 years being the breakpoint. However, neither linear nor quadratic trajectories were observed for the alerting and orienting network. Mediation analysis revealed that the P3 amplitude mediated the decrease and increase in executive control efficiency with exposure time depends on the breakpoint. Correlations between HRV and executive control efficiency and P3 amplitude suggest that U-shaped changes in executive control in migrants may be related to body homeostasis maintained by the autonomic nervous system, and that P3 amplitude may serve as a neurophysiological marker of migrants' adaptation/recovery from high-altitude exposure.

BACKGROUND: Due to regional and cultural differences, the current status of extremely preterm infants(EPIs) treatment across different areas of mainland China remains unclear. This study investigated the survival rate and incidence of major diseases among EPIs in the southwest area of Fujian province. METHOD: This retrospective and multicenter study collected perinatal data from EPIs with gestational ages between 22-27+ 6w and born in the southwest area of Fujian province. The study population was divided into 6 groups based on gestational age at delivery. The primary outcome was the survival status at ordered hospital discharge or correct gestational age of 40 weeks, and the secondary outcome was the incidence of major diseases. The study analyzed the actual survival status of EPIs in the area. RESULT: A total of 2004 preterm infants with gestational ages of 22-27+ 6 weeks were enrolled in this study. Among them, 1535 cases (76.6%) were born in the delivery room but did not survive, 469 cases (23.4%) were transferred to the neonatal department for treatment, 101 cases (5.0%) received partial treatment, and 368 cases (18.4%) received complete treatment. The overall all-cause mortality rate was 84.4% (1691/2004). The survival rate and survival rate without major serious disease for EPIs who received complete treatment were 85.1% (313/368) and 31.5% (116/318), respectively. The survival rates for gestational ages 22-22+ 6w, 23-23+ 6w, 24-24+ 6w, 25-25+ 6w, 26-26+ 6w, and 27-27+ 6w were 0%, 0%, 59.1% (13/22), 83% (39/47), 88.8% (87/98), and 89.7% (174/198), respectively. The survival rates without major serious disease were 0%, 0%, 9.1% (2/22), 19.1% (9/47), 27.6% (27/98), and 40.2% (78/194), respectively. CONCLUSION: The all-cause mortality of EPIs in the southwest area of Fujian Province remains high, with a significant number of infants were given up after birth in the delivery room being the main influencing factor. The survival rate of EPIs who received complete treatment at 25-27 weeks in the NICU was similar to that in developed countries. However, the survival rate without major serious disease was significantly lower compared to high-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious gastrointestinal disease, primarily affects preterm newborns and occurs after 7 days of life (late-onset NEC, LO-NEC). Unfortunately, over the past several decades, not much progress has been made in its treatment or prevention. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for LO-NEC, and the impact of LO-NEC on short-term outcomes in very preterm infants (VPIs) with a focus on nutrition and different onset times. METHOD: Clinical data of VPIs were retrospectively collected from 28 hospitals in seven different regions of China from September 2019 to December 2020. A total of 2509 enrolled VPIs were divided into 2 groups: the LO-NEC group and non-LO-NEC group. The LO-NEC group was divided into 2 subgroups based on the onset time: LO-NEC occurring between 8 ~ 14d group and LO-NEC occurring after 14d group. Clinical characteristics, nutritional status, and the short-term clinical outcomes were analyzed and compared among these groups. RESULTS: Compared with the non-LO-NEC group, the LO-NEC group had a higher proportion of anemia, blood transfusion, and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) treatments before NEC; the LO-NEC group infants had a longer fasting time, required longer duration to achieve the target total caloric intake (110 kcal/kg) and regain birthweight, and showed slower weight growth velocity; the cumulative dose of the medium-chain and long-chain triglyceride (MCT/LCT) emulsion intake in the first week after birth was higher and breastfeeding rate was lower. Additionally, similar results including a higher proportion of IMV, lower breastfeeding rate, more MCT/LCT emulsion intake, slower growth velocity were also found in the LO-NEC group occurring between 8 ~ 14d when compared to the LO-NEC group occurring after 14 d (all (P < 0.05). After adjustment for the confounding factors, high proportion of breastfeeding were identified as protective factors and long fasting time before NEC were identified as risk factors for LO-NEC; early feeding were identified as protective factors and low gestational age, grade III ~ IV neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS), high accumulation of the MCT/LCT emulsion in the first week were identified as risk factors for LO-NEC occurring between 8 ~ 14d. Logistic regression analysis showed that LO-NEC was a risk factor for late-onset sepsis, parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis, metabolic bone disease of prematurity, and extrauterine growth retardation. CONCLUSION: Actively preventing premature birth, standardizing the treatment of grade III ~ IV NRDS, and optimizing enteral and parenteral nutrition strategies may help reduce the risk of LO-NEC, especially those occurring between 8 ~ 14d, which may further ameliorate the short-term clinical outcome of VPIs. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is a life-saving procedure for sepsis but the benefit of CRRT varies and prediction of clinical outcomes is valuable in efficient treatment planning. This study aimed to use machine learning (ML) models trained using MIMIC III data for identifying sepsis patients who would benefit from CRRT. We first selected patients with sepsis and CRRT in the ICU setting and their gender, and an array of routine lab results were included as features to train machine learning models using 30-day mortality as the primary outcome. A total of 4161 patients were included for analysis, among whom there were 1342 deaths within 30 days. Without data augmentation, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) showed an accuracy of 64.2% with AUC-ROC of 0.61. Data augmentation using a conditional generative adversarial neural network (c-GAN) resulted in a significantly improved accuracy (82%) and ROC-AUC (0.78%). To enable prediction on pediatric patients, we adopted transfer learning approaches, where the weights of all but the last hidden layer were fixed, followed by fine-tuning of the weights of the last hidden layer using pediatric data of 200 patients as the inputs. A significant improvement was observed using the transfer learning approach (AUCROC = 0.76) compared to direct training on the pediatric cohort (AUCROC = 0.62). Through this transfer-learning-facilitated patient outcome prediction, our study showed that ML can aid in clinical decision-making by predicting patient responses to CRRT for managing pediatric sepsis.

Collectin subfamily member 10 (COLEC10), a C-type lectin mainly expressed in the liver, is involved in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, its underlying molecular mechanism in HCC progression remains unknown. In this study, reduced COLEC10 expression in tumor tissues was validated using various HCC cohorts and was associated with poor patient prognosis. COLEC10 overexpression attenuated HCC cell growth and migration abilities in vitro and in vivo. We identified that COLEC10 was a novel interactor of 78-kDa glucose-regulated protein (GRP78), a master modulator of the unfolded protein response in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). COLEC10 overexpression potentiated ER stress in HCC cells, as demonstrated by elevated expression levels of phosphorylated protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase, phosphorylated inositol-requiring protein 1α, activating transcription factor 4, DNA damage-inducible transcript 3, and X-box-binding protein 1s. The ER in COLEC10-overexpressing cells also showed a dilated and fragmented pattern. Mechanistically, COLEC10 overexpression increases GRP78 occupancy through direct binding by the C-terminal carbohydrate recognition domain in the ER, which released and activated the ER stress transducers protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase and phosphorylated inositol-requiring protein 1α, triggering the unfolded protein response activity. COLEC10-overexpressing HCC cells generated a relatively high reactive oxygen species level and switched to apoptotic cell death under sorafenib-treated conditions. Our study provides the first novel view that COLEC10 inhibits HCC progression by regulating GRP78-mediated ER stress signaling and may serve as a promising therapeutic and prognostic biomarker.

A series of nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) was launched in Beijing, China, on January 24, 2020, to control coronavirus disease 2019. To reveal the roles of NPIs on the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), respiratory specimens collected from children with acute respiratory tract infection between July 2017 and Dec 2021 in Beijing were screened by capillary electrophoresis-based multiplex PCR (CEMP) assay. Specimens positive for RSV were subjected to a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and genotyped by G gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis using iqtree v1.6.12. The parallel and fixed (paraFix) mutations were analyzed with the R package sitePath. Clinical data were compared using SPSS 22.0 software. Before NPIs launched, each RSV endemic season started from October/November to February/March of the next year in Beijing. After that, the RSV positive rate abruptly dropped from 31.93% in January to 4.39% in February 2020; then, a dormant state with RSV positive rates ≤1% from March to September, a nearly dormant state in October (2.85%) and November (2.98%) and a delayed endemic season in 2020, and abnormal RSV positive rates remaining at approximately 10% in summer until September 2021 were detected. Finally, an endemic RSV season returned in October 2021. There was a game between Subtypes A and B, and RSV-A replaced RSV-B in July 2021 to become the dominant subtype. Six RSV-A and eight RSV-B paraFix mutations were identified on G. The percentage of severe pneumonia patients decreased to 40.51% after NPIs launched. NPIs launched in Beijing seriously interfered with the endemic season of RSV.

A three-component umpolung cascade coupling reaction of phenols, C60 , and different nucleophiles which includes H2 O, alcohols, triphenylamines and carbazoles was developed. Furthermore, one-pot 1,4-bisphenol coupling on C60 has been realized by this method. This practical protocol features high chemo- and regioselectivity, wide substrate range, easy operation and low cost, thus providing a robust method for the one-pot synthesis of various unsymmetrical 1,4-[60]fullerephenols.

A racemic bispyridyl ligand (L) was synthesized via a Schiff base condensation reaction. Four Cd(II) complexes, {[CdL2Cl2]·2DMF}n (1), [CdLI2]n (2), {[CdL2Br2]·4H2O}n (3), and {[CdL2(H2O)2](NO3)2·2CH3OH·8H2O}n (4), were synthesized and further characterized based on this ligand. Single-crystal structures show that the coordination-driven assembly of the bispyridyl ligand with Cd(II) salts bearing different counteranions can lead to multidimensional coordination polymers via a heterochiral self-discrimination process. Complex 1 exists as a one-dimensional (1D) looped chain polymer, and complex 2 exists as a 1D zigzag chain polymer. Complex 3 is a 2D grid coordination polymer, and complex 4 exists as a 3D framework polymer. Furthermore, the iodine sorption capacities of the four complexes were investigated in the solution of n-hexane and water as well as in the iodine steam. The dye sorption behaviors were investigated in water, which showed that complex 2 exhibited good adsorption for crystal violet (CV), while complex 4 had good adsorption capability toward direct yellow 4 (DY).

Herein, a chiral bispyridyl ligand (L) was designed and synthesized using a Schiff base condensation reaction, followed by a 1,3-H shift. Five complexes, [Zn2L2(OAc)4] (1), {[CdLCl2(DMF)]·4H2O}n (2), [Cd2L2I4]·4H2O (3), {[CdL2(H2O)2](NO3)2·2CH3OH}n (4), and [Hg2L2Cl4]·2DMF (5), were synthesized and characterized upon its reaction with Zn(II), Cd(II), or Hg(II) ions, respectively. X-ray crystallography shows that the organic compound exists as a racemic ligand with equal amounts of its R- and S-isomers, and all of the synthesized complexes exhibit heterochiral self-assembly via a chiral self-discrimination process. Complexes 1, 3, and 5 exist as centrosymmetric binuclear metallamacrocycles, while complexes 2 and 4 exist as 1D looped-chain coordination polymers. Inspired by the assembled structures of the five complexes, I2 adsorption/desorption measurements for the complexes were carried out. The results show that complexes 1 and 5 exhibit good adsorption capacities toward I2 in n-hexane and in water, respectively.

BACKGROUND: To analyze the real-world growth pattern of very premature infants (VPI) with small for gestational age (SGA) after birth by using the ΔZ value of weight at discharge. METHODS: The clinical data were collected from 28 hospitals in China from September 2019 to December 2020. They were divided into the EUGR(Extrauterine Growth Restriction) and the non-EUGR group according to the criterion of ΔZ value of weight at discharge < -1.28. RESULTS: This study included 133 eligible VPI with SGA. Following the criterion of ΔZ value, the incidence of EUGR was 36.84% (49/133). The birth weight, the 5-min Apgar score, and the proportion of male infants in the EUGR group were lower (P < 0.05). The average invasive ventilation time, cumulative duration of the administration of antibiotics, blood transfusion time, blood transfusion ratio, and total days of hospitalization were significantly higher in the EUGR group (P < 0.05). In the EUGR group, several factors exhibited higher values (P < 0.05), including the initiation of enteral feeding, the volume of milk supplemented with human milk fortifier (HMF), the duration to achieve complete fortification, the cumulative duration of fasting, the duration to achieve full enteral feeding, the length of parenteral nutrition (PN), the number of days required to attain the desired total calorie intake and oral calorie intake, as well as the age at which birth weight was regained. The average weight growth velocity (GV) was significantly lower in the EUGR group (P < 0.001). The incidences of patent ductus arteriosus with hemodynamic changes (hsPDA), neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) stage≥ 2, late-onset sepsis (LOS), and feeding intolerance (FI) in the EUGR group were higher (P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that birth weight, male, and GV were the protective factors, while a long time to achieve full-dose fortification, slow recovery of birth weight, and NEC stage ≥2 were the independent risk factors. CONCLUSION: SGA in VPI can reflect the occurrence of EUGR more accurately by using the ΔZ value of weight at discharge. Enhancing enteral nutrition support, achieving prompt and complete fortification of breast milk, promoting greater GV, reducing the duration of birth weight recovery, and minimizing the risk of NEC can contribute to a decreased occurrence of EUGR. Two helical ligands (L1 and L2) were designed and synthesized by a Schiff base condensation reaction. Eight complexes, {[Zn(L1)I2]·H2O}n (1), [Cd2(L1)2I4(CH3OH)2] (2), [Hg2(L1)2I4] (3), [Ag(L1)NO3]n (4), [Ag2(L1)2(NO3)2DMSO]·H2O (5), {[Zn2(L2)2Cl4]·2CHCl3}n (6), {[Ag(L2)]·NO3}n (7), and {[Ag(L2)NO3]·CH3OH}n (8), were synthesized and characterized based on these two ligands. The crystal structures show that both Schiff base compounds exist as racemic ligands with equal amounts of P- and M-helicity, and the assembly of these racemic ligands with metal ions can lead to homochiral or heterochiral complexes via a chiral self-recognition or self-discrimination process. Complexes 2, 3, and 5 exist as heterochiral metallomacrocycles with a figure-eight conformation. Complexes 1, 6, and 8 exist as one-dimensional (1D) homochiral helical chain coordination polymers, while complexes 4 and 7 exist as 1D heterochiral helical chain coordination polymers. Furthermore, gas and vapor adsorption measurements show that all of the synthesized complexes exhibit good selective adsorption capacities toward methanol and ethanol vapor over N2, H2, and O2.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal carcinoma (ESCA) is a common malignancy with a poor prognosis. Previous research has suggested that necroptosis is involved in anti-tumor immunity and promotes oncogenesis and cancer metastasis, which in turn affects tumor prognosis. However, the role of necroptosis in ESCA is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between necroptosis-related genes (NRGs) and ESCA. METHODS AND RESULTS: The clinical data and gene expression profiles of ESCA patients were extracted from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), and 159 NRGs were screened from the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. We then identified 52 differentially expressed NRGs associated with ESCA and used them for further analysis. Gene ontology (GO) and KEGG functional enrichment analyses showed that these NRGs were mostly associated with the regulation of necroptosis, Influenza A, apoptosis, NOD-like receptor, and NF-Kappa B signaling pathway. Next, univariate and multivariate Cox regression and LASSO analysis were used to identify the correlation between NRGs and the prognosis of ESCA. We constructed a prognostic model to predict the prognosis of ESCA based on SLC25A5, PPIA, and TNFRSF10B; the model classified patients into high- and low-risk subgroups based on the patient's risk score. Furthermore, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted, and the model was affirmed to perform moderately well for prognostic predictions. In addition, Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets were selected to validate the applicability and prognostic value of our predictive model. Based on different clinical variables, we compared the risk scores between the subgroups of different clinical features. We also analyzed the predictive value of this model for drug sensitivity. Moreover, Immunohistochemical (IHC) validation experiments explored that these three NRGs were expressed significantly higher in ESCA tissues than in adjacent non-tumor tissues. In addition, a significant correlation was observed between the three NRGs and immune-cell infiltration and immune checkpoints in ESCA. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, we successfully constructed and validated a novel necroptosis-related signature containing three genes (SLC25A5, PPIA, and TNFRSF10B) for predicting prognosis in patients with ESCA; these three genes might also play a crucial role in the progression and immune microenvironment of ESCA.

OBJECTIVE: Nutritional deficiency soon after birth is a risk factor of chronic lung disease (bronchopulmonary dysplasia, BPD). Afflicted infants are further prone to inadequate growth during hospitalization (extrauterine growth restriction, EUGR). This multi-center retrospective study investigated risk factors of EUGR, specifically in very preterm infants with BPD. METHOD: Data of infants with BPD who were born less than 32 weeks gestation (n = 1010) were collected from 7 regions of China. All infants were non-small for gestational age at birth. Infants were characterized as EUGR or non-EUGR at 36 weeks gestation or discharge, or stratified by gestational age or birthweight. Logistic regression analysis was applied. RESULTS: In 65.5% of the population, the BPD was mild. Infants with severe BPD (8.3%) had the highest rate of EUGR (72.6%, P < 0.001). Groups stratified by gestational age did not differ in rates of EUGR, but the birthweight of the EUGR group was significantly lower than that of the non-EUGR (P < 0.001). Birthweights of < 1000, 1000-1499, and ≥ 1500 g showed EUGR rates of 65.9%, 43.4%, and 23.8%, respectively (P < 0.001). Overall, the independent risk factors of EUGR were: moderate-to-severe BPD, gestational hypertension, cesarean section, cumulative fasting time, time required to achieve 110 kcal/kg/d, and hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA). CONCLUSION: In very preterm infants with BPD, the lower the birthweight or the more severe the BPD, the greater the risk of EUGR. In those with hsPDA, or moderate-to-severe BPD, it is especially important to prevent EUGR through perinatal management, enteral nutrition, and nutritional strategies.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the incidence of extrauterine growth retardation (EUGR) and its risk factors in very preterm infants (VPIs) during hospitalization in China. METHODS: A prospective multicenter study was performed on the medical data of 2 514 VPIs who were hospitalized in the department of neonatology in 28 hospitals from 7 areas of China between September 2019 and December 2020. According to the presence or absence of EUGR based on the evaluation of body weight at the corrected gestational age of 36 weeks or at discharge, the VPIs were classified to two groups: EUGR group (n=1 189) and non-EUGR (n=1 325). The clinical features were compared between the two groups, and the incidence of EUGR and risk factors for EUGR were examined. RESULTS: The incidence of EUGR was 47.30% (1 189/2 514) evaluated by weight. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that higher weight growth velocity after regaining birth weight and higher cumulative calorie intake during the first week of hospitalization were protective factors against EUGR (P<0.05), while small-for-gestational-age birth, prolonged time to the initiation of total enteral feeding, prolonged cumulative fasting time, lower breast milk intake before starting human milk fortifiers, prolonged time to the initiation of full fortified feeding, and moderate-to-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia were risk factors for EUGR (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It is crucial to reduce the incidence of EUGR by achieving total enteral feeding as early as possible, strengthening breastfeeding, increasing calorie intake in the first week after birth, improving the velocity of weight gain, and preventing moderate-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia in VPIs.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is clinically characterized as a progressive cognitive impairment and behavioral disorder. Pathological hallmarks of AD include extracellular senile plaques (SPs), intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and massive neuronal loss. Although the exact cause of AD is not well understood, a mounting body of evidence has demonstrated that the pathogenesis of AD is associated with oxidative stress, neu-roinflammation, and amyloid beta (Aß) induced neural apoptosis. Moreover, overexpression of ß-secretase 1 (BACE1), Aß, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), and Tau proteins are closely related to cognitive symptoms in AD. Studies have demonstrated that artemether, an antimalarial drug with acceptable side effects, possesses protective effects against neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. Importantly, artemether can easily penetrate the blood brain barrier, thereby representing an ideal drug candidate for AD treatment. METHODS: The effect of artemether on memory protection and the associated molecular mechanisms were investigated in an Aß25-35 induced cognitive impairments rat model. RESULTS: Results of the in vivo study showed that oral administration of artemether significantly attenuated Aß25-35-induced cognitive impairment in rats. Results of the in vitro study revealed that artemether significantly downregulated the endogenous expression of Aß, BACE1, mTOR, and Tau proteins in N2a cells. CONCLUSIONS: The beneficial effect of artemether against Aß 25-35-induced cognitive impairments was attributable to the downregulation of the expression of Aß, BACE1, mTOR, and Tau proteins, suggesting the potential of artemether as an effective, neuronal protective, and multi-targeted drug candidate for AD treatment.

CONTEXT: Lycium barbarum L. (Solanaceae) seed oil (LBSO) exerts LBSO exerts protective effects in the testis in vivo and in vitro via upregulating SIRT3. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the effects and mechanism of LBSO in the d-galactose (d-gal)-induced ageing testis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats (n = 30, 8-week-old) were randomly divided into three groups: LBSO group (n = 10) where rats received subcutaneous injection of d-gal at 125 mg/kg/day for 8 weeks and intragastric administration of LBSO at 1000 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks, ageing model group (n = 10) received 8-week-sunbcutaneous injection of d-gal, and control group (n = 10) with same administration of normal saline. Lentivirus had established TM4 cells with SIRT3 overexpression or silencing before LBSO intervened in vitro. RESULTS: Treatment with LBSO, the levels of INHB and testosterone both increased, compared to ageing model. In vitro, we found the ED50 of LBSO was 86.72 ± 1.49 and when the concentration of LBSO at 100 µg/mL to intervene TM4 cells, the number of cells increased from 8120 ± 676.2 to 15251 ± 1119, and the expression of SIRT3, HO-1, and SOD upregulated. However, HO-1 and SOD were dysregulated by silencing SIRT3. On the other hand, the expression of AMPK and PGC-1α upregulated as an effect of SIRT3 overexpression by lentivirus, meanwhile the same increasing trend of that being found in cells treated with LBSO, compared to control group. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: LBSO alleviated oxidative stress in d-gal-induced sub-acutely ageing testis and TM4 cells by suppressing the oxidative stress to mitochondria via SIRT3/AMPK/PGC-1α.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the association of early nutrition intake with the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, and Weipu Periodical Database were searched for the observational studies on the association between early nutrition intake and BPD. RevMan 5.3 software was used to perform a Meta analysis of eligible studies. RESULTS: Eight observational studies were included, with 548 infants with BPD and 522 infants without BPD. The Meta analysis showed that the BPD group had a significantly lower caloric intake than the non-BPD group within the first week after birth and in the first 2 weeks after birth (P < 0.05). The BPD group had a significantly lower enteral nutrition intake than the non-BPD group (WMD=-18.27, 95%CI:-29.70 to -6.84, P < 0.05), as well as a significantly lower intake of carbohydrate, fat, and protein (P < 0.05). The BPD group had a significantly longer duration of parenteral nutrition than the non-BPD group (WMD=14.26, 95%CI:13.26-15.25, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Early nutrition deficiency may be associated with the development of BPD, and more attention should be paid to enteral feeding of infants at a high risk of BPD to achieve total enteral feeding as soon as possible.

Four complexes, [Cu4L2(OCH3)2(CH3OH)2]·2H2O (1), [Zn2L2Cl4]·2H2O·2CH3OH (2), [Hg2L2Br4]·4CH3OH (3), and {[CdL2Cl2]·4H2O·4CH3OH}n (4), have been synthesized and characterized from a bis(pyridylhydrazone) ligand (L) with copper(II), zinc(II), mercury(II) or cadmium(II), respectively. Complex 1 exists as a centrosymmetric tetranuclear dimer with L as deprotonated tridentate ligand. Complexes 2 and 3 exist as centrosymmetric metallamacrocycles with L as bidentate ligand. Complex 4 exists as a 1D looped-chain coordination polymer. The thermal stabilities and vapor adsorption properties of the four complexes were investigated as well.

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical effect and complications of continuous blood purification (CBP) in the treatment of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in neonates. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for the clinical data of 21 neonates with MODS who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit from November 2015 to April 2019 and were treated with CBP. Clinical indices were observed before treatment, at 6, 12, 24, and 36 hours of CBP treatment, and at the end of treatment to evaluate the clinical effect and safety of CBP treatment. RESULTS: Among the 21 neonates with MODS undergoing CBP, 17 (81%) had response to treatment. The neonates with response to CBP treatment had a significant improvement in oxygenation index at 6 hours of treatment, a significant increase in urine volume at 24 hours of treatment, a stable blood pressure within the normal range at 24 hours of treatment, and significant reductions in the doses of the vasoactive agents epinephrine and dopamine at 6 hours of treatment (P<0.05), as well as a significant reduction in serum K+ level at 6 hours of treatment, a significant improvement in blood pH at 12 hours of treatment, and significant reductions in blood lactic acid, blood creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen at 12 hours of treatment (P<0.05). Among the 21 neonates during CBP treatment, 6 experienced thrombocytopenia, 1 had membrane occlusion, and 1 experienced bleeding, and no hypothermia, hypotension, or infection was observed. CONCLUSIONS: CBP is a safe, feasible, and effective method for the treatment of MODS in neonates, with few complications.

AIM: Sterol-regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) are major transcription factors that regulate liver lipid biosynthesis. In this article we reported a novel synthetic compound 2-(3-benzoylthioureido)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophene-3-carboxylic acid (ZJ001) that inhibited the SREBP-1c pathway, and effectively reduced hepatic lipid accumulation in diet-induced obesity (DIO) mice. METHODS: A luciferase reporter driven by an SRE-containing promoter transfected into HepG2 cells was used to discover the compound. Two approaches were used to evaluate the lipid-lowering effects of ZJ001: (1) diet-induced obesity (DIO) mice that were treated with ZJ001 (15 mg·kg(-1)·d(-1), po) for 7 weeks; and (2) HepG2 cells and primary hepatocytes used as in vitro models. RESULTS: ZJ001 (10, 20 µmol/L) dose-dependently inhibited the activity of SRE-containing promoter. ZJ001 administration ameliorated lipid metabolism and improved glucose tolerance in DIO mice, accompanied by significantly reduced mRNA levels of SREBP-1C and SREBP-2, and their downstream genes. In HepG2 cells and insulin-treated hepatocytes, ZJ001 (10-40 µmol/L) dose-dependently inhibited lipid synthesis, and reduced mRNA levels of SREBP-1C and SREBP-2, and their downstream genes. Furthermore, ZJ001 dose-dependently increased the phosphorylation of AMPK and regulatory-associated protein of mTOR (Raptor), and suppressed the phosphorylation of mTOR in insulin-treated hepatocytes. Moreover, ZJ001 increased the ADP/ATP ratio in insulin-treated hepatocytes. CONCLUSION: ZJ001 exerts multiple beneficial effects in diet-induced obesity mice. Its lipid-lowering effects may result from the suppression of mTORC1, which regulates SREBP-1c transcription. The results suggest that the SREBP-1c pathway may be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of lipid metabolic disorders.
