RESUMEN

Vasaikar et al. report a comprehensive proteogenomic analysis of 110 colon cancer samples to identify a variety of potential signaling and metabolic targets, neoantigens, and biomarkers. This resource helps expand our understanding of the fundamental pathophysiology of this tumor type, and future mechanistic studies should help guide novel therapeutic strategies for colon cancer treatment.

Mud volcanoes are dynamic geological features releasing methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and hydrocarbons, harboring diverse methane and hydrocarbon-degrading microbes. However, the potential application of these microbial communities in chlorinated hydrocarbons bioremediation purposes such as trichloroethylene (TCE) has not yet been explored. Hence, this study investigated the mud volcano's microbial diversity functional potentiality in TCE degradation as well as their eco-physiological profiling using metabolic activity. Geochemical analysis of the mud volcano samples revealed variations in pH, temperature, and oxidation-reduction potential, indicating diverse environmental conditions. The Biolog Ecoplate™ carbon substrates utilization pattern showed that the Tween 80 was highly consumed by mud volcanic microbial community. Similarly, MicroResp® analysis results demonstrated that presence of additive C-substrates condition might enhanced the cellular respiration process within mud-volcanic microbial community. Full-length 16 S rRNA sequencing identified Proteobacteria as the dominant phylum, with genera like Pseudomonas and Hydrogenophaga associated with chloroalkane degradation, and methanotrophic bacteria such as Methylomicrobium and Methylophaga linked to methane oxidation. Functional analysis uncovered diverse metabolic functions, including sulfur and methane metabolism and hydrocarbon degradation, with specific genes involved in methane oxidation and sulfur metabolism. These findings provide insights into the microbial diversity and metabolic capabilities of mud volcano ecosystems, which could facilitate their effective application in the bioremediation of chlorinated compounds.

BACKGROUND: Problematic use of the internet (PUI) is prevalent, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Given the limited measures to assess specific types of PUI, which encompasses a broad spectrum of activities such as online gaming, social media use, pornography use, shopping, gambling, and web-streaming, Muller et al. (2022) developed the Assessment of Criteria for Specific Internet-use Disorders (ACSID-11) to comprehensively assess different types of PUI (i.e., gaming, shopping, social media use, gambling, and pornography use). The present study aimed to validate the Chinese ACSID-11 among adolescents incorporating cross-cultural adaptations. METHODS: Using forward-backward translation method, a culturally adapted version of the ACSID-11 was prepared. Then, a cross-sectional online survey was administered between September 8 and September 26, 2023. Adolescents, using a convenience sample (N = 11,492; mean age = 16.42 years [SD ± 0.91]; 59.1% male), were recruited from six schools to complete the translated ACSID-11, Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (IGDS9-SF), Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS), and Smartphone Application Based Addiction Scale (SABAS) via an online platform. Pearson correlation coefficients assessed convergent/discriminant validity. Factor structure and measurement invariance were examined through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and multi-group CFA. Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega tested internal consistency. RESULTS: Associations between the ACSID-11 components and other scales supported convergent validity (i.e., ACSID-11 gaming scale with IGDS9-SF [0.37 ≤ r ≤ 0.41]; social networks use scale with BSMAS [0.24 ≤ r ≤ 0.31]) and discriminant validity (i.e., online gambling scale with BSMAS [0.16 ≤ r ≤ 0.19] and with SABAS [0.11 ≤ r ≤ 0.13]). A four-factor solution indicated good fit with comparative fit index (CFI) ranging from 0.982 to 0.958. The ACSID-11 was measurement invariant across sexes (∆CFI = -0.001 to 0.000) and different levels of related addictive behaviors (∆CFI = -0.001 to 0.000). Both Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega (0.63 to 0.97) were acceptable for both frequency and intensity of responses. CONCLUSIONS: The ACSID-11 is an appropriate scale to assess different kinds of PUI among Chinese adolescents and students. Psychometric assessment of the measure in other cultures and among clinical samples is recommended.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) D) levels with bone mineral density (BMD), fracture risk, and bone metabolism. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study recruited menopausal females and males greater than or equal to 50 year old with osteoporosis/fractures between September 2016 and September 2021. Assessment included clinical data, 25(OH)D, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), procollagen type 1 amino-terminal propeptide (P1NP), carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks (CTX), lateral thoracolumbar spine x-rays, and BMD. RESULTS: A total of 3003 individuals were stratified by 25(OH) D levels: 720 individuals (24%) <20 ng/mL, 1338 individuals (44.5%) 20 to 29 ng/mL, and 945 individuals (31.5%) ≥30 ng/mL. In unadjusted and multivariable models, BMD T-score, except spine, was significantly and positively associated with 25(OH)D levels. 25(OH) D levels were inversely associated with Fracture Risk Assessment Tool scores. Patients with 25(OH)D <20 ng/mL had significantly higher iPTH and bone turnover markers (P1NP and CTX) than patients with 25(OH)D â‰§20 ng/mL in all models. When analyzing bone-related markers and BMD, total hip and femoral neck BMD T-scores were positively correlated with 25(OH)D concentrations and BMI but negatively correlated with iPTH, P1NP, CTX, and age. In multivariate models with all bone-related markers, only 25(OH)D levels were significantly associated with total hip and femoral neck BMD. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D deficiency is significantly associated with decreased total hip and femoral neck BMD and increased fracture risk as assessed by Fracture Risk Assessment Tool. In those with osteoporosis/fractures, vitamin D is implicated in the causal relationship between bone remodeling and BMD. Assessing vitamin D status is imperative for those at risk for osteoporosis/fractures.

BACKGROUND Clinical training for allied health trainees (AHTs) and postgraduate-year (PGY) doctors needed to go online during the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which may have caused academic stress and consequent outcomes among this cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS To evaluate academic-related stress, clinical confidence, psychological distress, and insomnia, an online survey-based study was conducted among Taiwanese AHTs and PGY doctors between July and December, 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey included the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and self-designed questions. It was distributed using convenience sampling and snowball sampling and was completed by 522 participants. RESULTS Structural equational modelling showed that academic stress was negatively associated with clinical confidence (standardized coefficient [ß]=-0.382, p<0.001). Clinical confidence was negatively associated with psychological distress (ß=-0.397, p<0.001), which was associated with insomnia (ß=0.648, p<0.001). Additionally, clinical confidence and psychological distress were the significant mediators. Results indicated that higher academic stress was associated with higher level of insomnia via the mediation of clinical confidence and psychological distress. CONCLUSIONS Academic stress related to changes in clinical training may have led to insomnia among AHTs and PGY doctors during the pandemic. Factors to reduce academic stress should be investigated to promote good mental health while providing sufficient clinical training, especially during events that can cause increased stress (eg, epidemics, pandemics).

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) has been used not only to avoid genetic diseases and increase conception success rates but also to perform non-medical sex selection, particularly in the surging cross-border reproductive care (CBRC). In the context of commercialised biomedicine, assisted reproductive technologies, such as lifestyle sex selection, have been tailored to meet intended parents' preferences. However, there is a lack of analysis on how individuals' reproductive decisions on PGD-assisted sex selection were shaped within the sociocultural norms and CBRC. This article explores Taiwanese gay fathers' navigations on sex selection while seeking third-party reproduction overseas because of local legal constraints. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 53 gay fathers (to-be), I analysed how 'individual preferences' were dynamically shaped by local sociocultural norms and embedded within transnational settings of routinising PGD in chosen repro-destinations. The findings showed that gay fathers mobilised strategic discourses on non-medical sex selection from both the local and the global to negotiate their decisions in coherence with their LGBTQ+ identity and their role as sons carrying familial responsibility to procreate male heirs. This article proposed a nuanced understanding of gay fathers' reproductive practices of 'gendering the beginning of life' through PGD-assisted sex selection.

Improper disposal practices have caused environmental disruptions, possessing by heavy metal ions and radioactive elements in water and soil, where the innovative and sustainable remediation strategies are significantly imperative in last few decades. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) has emerged as a pioneering technology for remediating contaminated soil and water. Generally, MICP employs urease-producing microorganisms to decompose urea (NH2CONH2) into ammonium (NH4+and carbon dioxide (CO2), thereby increasing pH levels and inducing carbonate precipitation (CO32-), and effectively removing remove contaminants. Nonetheless, the intricate mechanism underlying heavy metal mineralization poses a significant challenge, constraining its application in contaminants engineering, particularly in the context of prolonged heavy metal leaching over time and its efficacy in adverse environmental conditions. This review provides a comprehensive idea of recent development of MICP and its application in environmental engineering, examining metabolic pathways, mineral precipitation mechanisms, and environmental factors as well as providing future perspectives for commercial utilization. The use of ureolytic bacteria in MICP demonstrates cost-efficiency, environmental compatibility, and successful pollutant abatement over tradition bioremediation techniques, and bio-synthesis of nanoparticles. limitations such as large-scale application, elevated Ca2+levels in groundwater, and gradual contaminant release need to be overcome. The possible future research directions for MICP technology, emphasizing its potential in conventional remediation, CO2 sequestration, bio-material synthesis, and its role in reducing environmental impact for long-term economic benefits.

OBJECTIVE: Approximately 30-50% of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) patients show poor response to systemic steroid therapy. Additionally, the most appropriate treatment for patients with refractory sudden sensorineural hearing loss (RSSNHL) is unknown. This study aimed to explore the best treatment for RSSNHL. DESIGN: Using a frequentist contrast-based model and PRISMA guidelines, this study compared five salvage regimes: intratympanic injection of steroids (ITS), hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy, post auricle steroid injection (PSI), ITS combined with HBO therapy, and continued systemic steroids. STUDY SAMPLE: We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for randomised controlled trials and cohort studies comparing treatment regimens for RSSNHL. RESULTS: Compared with the control group (no additional treatment), PSI and ITS demonstrated significant improvements. The mean hearing gain was greater after PSI (11.1 dB [95% CI, 4.4-17.9]) than after ITS (7.7 dB [95% CI, 4.8-10.7]). When a restricted definition of RSSNHL was used, the ITS + HBO therapy showed the largest difference in improvement for pure tone average compared with the control group (14.5 dB [95% CI, 4.2-25.0]). CONCLUSIONS: The administration of either PSI or ITS leads to the greatest therapeutic effect in patients with RSSNHL. However, a consensus on the definition of RSSNHL is needed.

BACKGROUND: Epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) are used as the standard first-line treatment for patients with advanced EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the impact of comorbidities and treatment toxicities on quality of life (QoL) was seldom investigated. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the association of comorbidities, adverse events (AEs), and QoL in treatment-naïve advanced NSCLC patients receiving EGFR-TKI treatments. METHODS: This multi-center prospective observational study was conducted to evaluate QoL and AEs at baseline, the 2nd, 4th, 12th, and 24th week. Clinical characteristics, comorbidities, and pre-treatment laboratory data were recorded. QoL was assessed by using the summary score of the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the dermatology life quality index. The impact of comorbidities, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and AEs on QoL was analyzed by generalized estimating equations. RESULTS: A total of 121 patients were enrolled. Diarrhea (p = 0.033), anorexia (p < 0.001), and NLR ≥4 (p = 0.017) were significantly associated with a QoL impairment. Among skin toxicities, acneiform rash (p = 0.002), pruritus (p = 0.002), visual analogue scale for pruritus (≥3 and < 7, p = 0.006; ≥7, p = 0.001) and pain (1-3, p = 0.041) were associated with a QoL impairment. No significant association was found between comorbidities and QoL changes. CONCLUSION: Diarrhea, anorexia, skin pain, and pruritus may cause a deterioration in QoL in patients receiving EGFR-TKI therapy. NLR may be a potential predictive factor for QoL impairment. Aggressive management and close monitoring for these clinical factors are crucial to improve QoL.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Efforts were made to explore the influence of diagnostic timing for cancer-associated thromboembolic events on survival of ovarian cancer patients. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 75 ovarian cancer patients with thromboembolism and evaluated the prognostic factors affecting disease-free survival and overall survival. RESULTS: These 75 patients were classified into two categories by the diagnostic timing of the thromboembolism, during (33 cases) and after (42 cases) initial diagnosis of ovarian cancer groups. The diagnostic timing of thromboembolism was not related to disease-free survival or overall survival of the studied population. Advanced disease stage, clear cell histology, interval debulking surgery, no recurrence/persistence of ovarian cancer, and patients treated with anticoagulant(s) treatment >3 months were associated with the disease-free survival. Advanced disease stage, clear cell histology, body mass index (BMI) ≥24 kg/m2 at the diagnosis of ovarian cancer, and no recurrence/persistence of ovarian cancer influenced the overall survival. In the subgroup analysis, compared to the after initial ovarian cancer diagnosis group, patients with stage I/II disease, BMI <24 kg/m2 at the diagnosis of ovarian cancer, or primary debulking surgery in the during cancer diagnosis group had longer disease-free survival, and overall survival benefit was observed in cases with stage I/II disease, or primary debulking surgery. CONCLUSION: The diagnostic timing of thromboembolism was not related to disease-free or overall survival of ovarian cancer patients, but associated with that of specific patient subgroups.

Growing evidence suggests that the hydrochemical properties of geothermal fumaroles may play a crucial role in shaping the diversity and functions of microbial communities in various environments. In the present study, the impact of geothermal furaneols on the microbial communities and their metabolic functions across the rock-soil-plant continuum was explored considering varying distances from the fumarole source. The results revealed that bacterial phylum Proteobacteria was predominant in all sample types, except in the 10 m rock sample, irrespective of the sampling distance. Archaeal phyla, such as Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota, were more prevalent in rock and soil samples, whereas bacterial phyla were more prevalent in plant samples. Thermoacidophilic archaeons, including Picrophilus, Ferroplasma, and Thermogymnomonas were dominant in rocks and soil samples of 1 and 5 m distances; acidophilic mesophiles, including Ferrimicrobium and Granulicella were abundant in the rhizoplane samples, whereas rhizosphere-associated microbes including Pseudomonas, Pedobacter, Rhizobium, and Novosphingobium were found dominant in the rhizosphere samples. The functional analysis highlighted the higher expression of sulfur oxidative pathways in the rock and soil samples; dark iron oxidation and nitrate/nitrogen respiratory functions in the rhizosphere samples. The findings underscore microbial adaptations across the rock-soil-plant continuum, emphasizing the intricate relationship between geothermal fumaroles and microbial communities in adjacent ecosystems. These insights offer a crucial understanding of the evolution of microbial life and highlight their pivotal roles in shaping ecosystem dynamics and functions.

PURPOSE: Nursing students feel stressed during pediatric clinical practicum due to limited communication encounters with hospitalized children. The purpose of this study was to describe junior nursing college students' experiences of communicating with children during pediatric clinical practicums. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative phenomenological research design was used. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 18 junior nursing college students who completed their pediatric clinical practicum. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step method for data analysis. RESULTS: Three themes emerged from the data. (1) Difficulties in communicating during initial practicum: fear, rejection, self-doubt of communication abilities, and unfamiliarity with the application of communication techniques posed frustrations among nursing students. (2) Efforts to learn during practicum: self-empowerment, seeking a diverse support system, adjusting communication methods, and striving to establish good relationships allowed nursing students to adapt to the pediatric curriculum. (3) Effective communication at the later stages of practicum: mastering fundamental communication techniques and exercising pediatric therapeutic communication techniques allowed nursing students to feel accomplished. CONCLUSIONS: Junior nursing college students initially encountered difficulties and frustration when communicating with children during their pediatric clinical practicum. This study serves as a guide for educators of pediatric nursing to design courses on communication with hospitalized children. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: These findings could be used to develop foundation courses on communicating with children for first-time pediatric nursing practicum students; for example, formulating a course on therapeutic play for children that encompasses communication techniques, pediatric ward simulation, and introduction to therapeutic play.

Heavy metals (HMs) contained terrestrial ecosystems are often significantly display the antibiotic resistome in the pristine area due to increasing pressure from anthropogenic activity, is complex and emerging research interest. This study investigated that impact of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co) concentrations in serpentine soil on the induction of antibiotic resistance genes and antimicrobial resistance within the native bacterial community as well as demonstrated their metabolic fingerprint. The full-length 16S-rRNA amplicon sequencing observed an increased abundance of Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota, and Acidobacteriota in serpentine soil. The microbial community in serpentine soil displayed varying preferences for different carbon sources, with some, such as carbohydrates and carboxylic acids, being consistently favored. Notably, 27 potential antibiotic resistance opportunistic bacterial genera have been identified in different serpentine soils. Among these, Lapillicoccus, Rubrobacter, Lacibacter, Chloroplast, Nitrospira, Rokubacteriales, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas were significantly enriched in high and medium HMs concentrated serpentine soil samples. Functional profiling results illustrated that vancomycin resistance pathways were prevalent across all groups. Additionally, beta-lactamase, aminoglycoside, tetracycline, and vancomycin resistance involving specific bio-maker genes (ampC, penP, OXA, aacA, strB, hyg, aph, tet(A/B), otr(C), tet(M/O/Q), van(A/B/D), and vanJ) were the most abundant and enriched in the HMs-contaminated serpentine soil. Overall, this study highlighted that heavy-metal enriched serpentine soil is potential to support the proliferation of bacterial antibiotic resistance in native microbiome, and might able to spread antibiotic resistance to surrounding environment.

BACKGROUND: The ideal time to perform reconstruction after the completion of postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) in patients with locally advanced breast cancer is currently unknown. We evaluate the association between the timing of delayed autologous breast reconstruction following PMRT and postoperative complications. METHODS: Patients who underwent mastectomy, PMRT, and then delayed autologous breast reconstruction from 2009 to 2016 were identified from the Truven Health MarketScan Research Databases. Timing of reconstruction following PMRT was grouped 0-3, 3-6, 6-12, 12-24, and after 24 months. Multivariable models were used to assess associations between timing of reconstruction following PMRT and key measures of morbidity. RESULTS: A total of 1,039 patients met inclusion criteria. The rate of any complications for the analytic cohort was 39.4%, including 13.3% of patients who experienced wound complications and 11.3% of patients requiring additional flaps. Unadjusted rates of complications increased from 23.4% between 0 and 3 months to 49.4% between 3 and 6 months and decreased thereafter. Need for additional flaps was highest within 3 to 6 months (14.0%). Multivariate analysis revealed higher rates of any complications when reconstruction was performed between 3 and 6 months (odds ratio [OR]: 3.04, p < 0.001), 6 and 12 months (OR: 2.66, p < 0.001), or 12 and 24 months (OR: 2.13, p = 0.001) after PMRT. No difference in complications were noted in reconstructions performed after 24 months compared with those performed before 3 months (p > 0.05). However, rates of wound complications were least likely in reconstructions after 24 months (OR: 0.34, p = 0.035). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest plastic surgeons may consider performing autologous breast reconstruction early for select patients, before 3 months following PMRT without increasing postoperative morbidity.

BACKGROUND: Although radiotherapy is common for head/neck and chest cancers (HNCC), it can result in post-irradiation stenosis of the subclavian artery (PISSA). The efficacy of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting (PTAS) to treat severe PISSA is not well-clarified. AIMS: To compare the technical safety and outcomes of PTAS between patients with severe PISSA (RT group) and radiation-naïve counterparts (non-RT group). METHODS: During 2000 and 2021, we retrospectively enrolled patients with severe symptomatic stenosis (>60%) of the subclavian artery who underwent PTAS. The rate of new recent vertebrobasilar ischaemic lesions (NRVBIL), diagnosed on diffusion-weight imaging (DWI) within 24 h of postprocedural brain MRI; symptom relief; and long-term stent patency were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Technical success was achieved in all 61 patients in the two groups. Compared with the non-RT group (44 cases, 44 lesions), the RT group (17 cases, 18 lesions) had longer stenoses (22.1 vs 11.1 mm, P = 0.003), more ulcerative plaques (38.9% vs 9.1%, P = 0.010), and more medial- or distal-segment stenoses (44.4% vs 9.1%, P<0.001). The technical safety and outcome between the non-RT group and the RT group were NRVBIL on DWI of periprocedural brain MRI 30.0% vs 23.1%, P = 0.727; symptom recurrence rate (mean follow-up 67.1 ± 50.0 months) 2.3% vs 11.8%, P = 0.185; and significant in-stent restenosis rate (>50%) 2.3% vs 11.1%, P = 0.200. CONCLUSION: The technical safety and outcome of PTAS for PISSA were not inferior to those of radiation-naïve counterparts. PTAS for PISSA is an effective treatment for medically refractory ischaemic symptoms of HNCC patients with PISSA.

BACKGROUND: The study of the native microbiome of organisms is crucial. The connection between the native microbiome and the host affects the formation of the innate immune system and the organism's growth. However, the native microbiome of newborn venomous snakes has not been reported. Therefore, we aimed to determine the oral and skin microbiomes of newborn Protobothrops mucrosquamatus. RESULTS: We performed 16 S full-length sequencing on 14 samples collected from 7 newborn P. mucrosquamatus individuals, specifically targeting their oral and skin microbiomes. In terms of the oral and skin microbiome, the main species were Klebsiella pneumoniae lineages. According to subspecies/species analysis, the proportion from highest to lowest was K. quasipneumoniae subsp. similipneumoniae, K. pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae, and K. pneumoniae subsp. rhinoscleromatis. These three bacteria accounted for 62.5% and 85% of the skin and oral activity, respectively. The oral microbiome of newborn P. mucrosquamatus did not comprise common bacteria found in snakebite wounds or oral cultures in adult snakes. Therefore, the source of other microbiomes in the oral cavities of adult snakes may be the environment or prey. Functional Annotation of the Prokaryotic Taxa analysis showed that the skin/oral native microbiome metabolism was related to fermentation and human infection owing to the dominance of K. pneumoniae lineages. The characteristics of K. pneumoniae may impact the development of venom in venomous snakes. CONCLUSION: The results of the native microbiome in the oral cavity and skin of newborn P. mucrosquamatus demonstrated that the habitat environment and prey capture may affect the composition of bacteria in adult snakes. We hypothesized that the native microbiome influences newborn venomous snakes and that K. pneumoniae lineages related to citrate fermentation may play a role in venom growth. However, further verification of this is required.

In the present study, we have underpinned the serpentine rock, serpentinized ultramafic soil and rhizosphere's microbial communities, signifying their heavy metals-exposed taxa signatures and functional repertoires in comparison to non-serpentine soils. The results revealed that the serpentine rock embedded soil highlighted the geo-accumulation of higher amount of Cr and Ni impacting soil microbial diversity negatively by metal stress-driven selection. Biolog Ecoplate CLPP defined a restricted spectrum of C-utilization in the higher heavy metal-containing serpentine samples compared to non-serpentine. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA) score identified a higher abundance of Desulfobacterota, Opitutales, and Bacteroidales in low Cr and Ni-stressed non-serpentine-exposed samples. Whereas the abundance of Propionibacteriales and Actinobacteriota were significantly enriched in the serpentine niche. Further, the C, N, S, Fe, and methane biogeochemical cycles linked functional members were identified, and showing higher functional diversity in low Cr and Ni concentration-containing rhizosphere JS-soils. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) value confirmed the abundance of functional members linked to specific biogeochemical cycle, positively correlated with relevant pathway enrichment. Ultimately, this study highlighted the heavy metal stress within a serpentine setting that could limit the resident microbial community's metabolic diversity and further select the bacteria that could thrive in the serpentine-associated heavy metal-stressed soils. These acclimatized microbes could pave the way for the future applications in the soil conservation and management.

Mud volcanoes are the most dynamic and unstable sedimentary structures in the areas of tectonic compression like the subduction zones. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed the distribution of minerals as well as diversity, abundance and metabolic potential of the microbial communities of major mud volcanic groups across Taiwan namely Chu-kou Fault (CKF), Gu-ting-keng Anticline (GTKA), Chi-shan Fault (CSF), and Longitudinal Valley Fault (LVF). The mud volcano fluids recorded relatively higher Na and Cl contents than the other elements, particularly in the CKF and GTKA groups. The highest microbial diversity and richness were observed in the CSF group, followed by the GTKA group, whereas the lowest microbial diversity was observed in the CKF and LVF groups. Proteobacteria were common in all the sampling sites, except WST-7 and WST-H (Wu-Shan-Ting) of the CSF group, which were abundant in Chloroflexi. The halophilic genus Alterococcus was abundant in the Na-and Cl-rich CL-A sites of the CKF group. Sulfurovum was dominant in the CLHS (Chung-Lun hot spring) site of the CKF group and was positively correlated with sulfur/thiosulfate respiration, which might have resulted in a higher expression of these pathways in the respective group. Aerobic methane-oxidizing microbial communities, such as Methylobacter, Methylomicrobium, Methylomonas, and Methylosoma, constituted a dominant part of the LVF and CSF groups, except for the YNH-A and YNH-B (Yang-Nyu-Hu) sites. The WST-7 and JS sites were abundant in both methane-producing and methane-oxidizing microbial communities. The LGH-F1 (Lei-Gong-Huo) site was dominated by both methanotrophic and methylotrophic genera, such as Methylomicrobium and Methylophaga, respectively. Methylotrophy, methanotrophs, and hydrocarbon-degrading pathways were more abundant in the LVF and CSF groups but not in the remaining groups. The results of this study extend our knowledge of the diversity, abundance, and metabolic functions of prokaryotes in major terrestrial mud volcanoes in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: The Assessment of Criteria for Specific Internet-use Disorders (ACSID-11) is a consistent and comprehensive instrument to assess symptoms of specific internet-use disorders including those related to gaming, shopping, pornography use disorder, social networks use and gambling considering criteria in the eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). However, to date, there is little evidence supporting instruments assessing major types of specific internet use disorders in Thailand. The aim of this present study was to assess the psychometric properties of the ACSID-11 among Thai young adults. METHODS: A total of 612 participants were recruited. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) examined construct validity of the ACSID-11. Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω were used to assess reliability of the ACSID-11. Pearson correlations examined relationships between ACSID-11 domains and Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (IGDS9-SF) scores. RESULTS: The CFA supported validity of the Thai version of the ACSID-11 and a four-factor structure. Specific domains of the Thai ACSID-11, particularly gaming, were positively and significantly correlated with IGDS9-SF scores. CONCLUSIONS: Data indicate that the Thai version of the ACSID-11 is a valid and reliable instrument to assess major types of specific internet use disorders. Additional studies are needed to further examine the validity and reliability of the Thai ACSID-11.

PURPOSE: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Gaming Disorder Test (GDT) and Gaming Disorder Scale for Adolescents (GADIS-A) for use in Taiwan and to validate their internal consistency, construct validity, measurement invariance, and convergent validity in Taiwanese young adults. METHODS: The GDT and GADIS-A were translated into traditional (unsimplified) Chinese characters and culturally adapted according to standard guidelines. A sample of 608 Taiwanese university students were recruited online. All participants completed the GDT, GADIS-A, Internet Gaming Disorder Scale - Short Form (IGDS9-SF), and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω. Factor structure was examined using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Measurement invariance in gender was assessed by three nested models in CFA. Convergent validity was determined by calculating Pearson's r among the GDT, GADIS-A, IGDS9-SF, and DASS-21. RESULTS: The GDT and GADIS-A showed adequate internal consistency (both α and ω = 0.90). The CFA results supported a one-factor structure for the GDT and a two-factor structure for the GADIS-A. Measurement invariance across gender was supported for both the GDT and GADIS-A. The convergent validity of the GDT and GADIS-A were acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: The Chinese versions of the GDT and GADIS-A are valid and reliable tools that can be used to assess gaming disorder in Taiwanese young adults. Measurement invariance across genders was supported for both tools. The convergent validity of the GDT and GADIS-A were also satisfactory.
