RESUMEN

Spin nematic is a magnetic analogue of classical liquid crystals, a fourth state of matter exhibiting characteristics of both liquid and solid1,2. Particularly intriguing is a valence-bond spin nematic3-5, in which spins are quantum entangled to form a multipolar order without breaking time-reversal symmetry, but its unambiguous experimental realization remains elusive. Here we establish a spin nematic phase in the square-lattice iridate Sr2IrO4, which approximately realizes a pseudospin one-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit6-9. Upon cooling, the transition into the spin nematic phase at TC ≈ 263 K is marked by a divergence in the static spin quadrupole susceptibility extracted from our Raman spectra and concomitant emergence of a collective mode associated with the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetries. The quadrupolar order persists in the antiferromagnetic phase below TN ≈ 230 K and becomes directly observable through its interference with the antiferromagnetic order in resonant X-ray diffraction, which allows us to uniquely determine its spatial structure. Further, we find using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering a complete breakdown of coherent magnon excitations at short-wavelength scales, suggesting a many-body quantum entanglement in the antiferromagnetic state10,11. Taken together, our results reveal a quantum order underlying the Néel antiferromagnet that is widely believed to be intimately connected to the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity12,13.

RESUMEN

We obtained samples from the Department of Defense Serum Repository from soldiers who were stationed at Fort Liberty, North Carolina, between 1991 and 2019 to assess temporal trends in tick-borne rickettsiosis and ehrlichiosis. Serological evidence of infection was common, with nearly 1 in 5 (18.9%) demonstrating antibodies. We observed significant decreases in Rickettsia seroprevalence (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.42 [95% CI, .27-.65], P = .0001) while over the same period Ehrlichia seroprevalence, albeit less common, nearly doubled (aOR, 3.61 [95% CI, 1.10-13.99], P = .048). The increase in Ehrlichia seroprevalence likely reflects increased transmission resulting from the expanding geographic range of the lone star tick.

RESUMEN

Chorioamnionitis is a common antecedent of preterm birth and induces inflammation and oxidative stress in the fetal lungs. Reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in the fetal lungs may improve respiratory outcomes in preterm infants. Creatine is an organic acid with known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of direct fetal creatine supplementation to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in fetal lungs arising from an in utero proinflammatory stimulus. Fetal lambs (n = 51) were instrumented at 90 days gestation to receive a continuous infusion of creatine monohydrate (6 mg·kg-1·h-1) or saline for 17 days. Maternal chorioamnionitis was induced with intra-amniotic lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 1 mg, O55:H6) or saline 7 days before delivery at 110 days gestation. Tissue creatine content was assessed with capillary electrophoresis, and inflammatory markers were analyzed with Luminex Magpix and immunohistochemistry. Oxidative stress was measured as the level of protein thiol oxidation. The effects of LPS and creatine were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA. Fetal creatine supplementation increased lung creatine content by 149% (PCr < 0.0001) and had no adverse effects on lung morphology. LPS-exposed groups showed increased levels of interleukin-8 in the bronchoalveolar lavage (PLPS < 0.0001) and increased levels of CD45+ leukocytes (PLPS < 0.0001) and MPO+ (PLPS < 0.0001) cells in the lung parenchyma. Creatine supplementation significantly reduced the levels of CD45+ (PCr = 0.045) and MPO+ cells (PCr = 0.012) in the lungs and reduced thiol oxidation in plasma (PCr < 0.01) and lung tissue (PCr = 0.02). In conclusion, fetal creatine supplementation reduced markers of inflammation and oxidative stress in the fetal lungs arising from chorioamnionitis.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We evaluated the effect of antenatal creatine supplementation to reduce pulmonary inflammation and oxidative stress in the fetal lamb lungs arising from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced chorioamnionitis. Fetal creatine supplementation increased lung creatine content and had no adverse effects on systemic fetal physiology and overall lung architecture. Importantly, fetuses that received creatine had significantly lower levels of inflammation and oxidative stress in the lungs, suggesting an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefit of creatine.

RESUMEN

Pain is often one of the initial indicators of a viral infection, yet our understanding of how viruses induce pain is limited. Immune cells typically recognize viral nucleic acids, which activate viral receptors and signaling, leading to immunity. Interestingly, these viral receptors and signals are also present in nociceptors and are associated with pain. Here, we investigate the response of nociceptors to nucleic acids during viral infections, specifically focusing on the role of the viral signal, Stimulator of Interferon Genes (STING). Our research shows that cytosolic double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) from viruses, like herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), triggers pain responses through STING expression in nociceptors. In addition, STING agonists alone can elicit pain responses. Notably, these responses involve the direct activation of STING in nociceptors through TRPV1. We also provided a proof-of-concept showing that STING and TRPV1 significantly contribute to the mechanical hypersensitivity induced by HSV-1 infection. These findings suggest that STING could be a potential therapeutic target for relieving pain during viral infections.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Although diabetes is one of the leading causes of death among Korean Americans, the levels and predictors of diabetes knowledge in this group have not been sufficiently reported. This study aimed to (1) describe the level of diabetes knowledge of Korean immigrant women in the U.S. and (2) examine whether there is an interaction effect between social support and education on diabetes knowledge. DESIGN: This study conducted a cross-sectional survey design. The sample included 227 Korean immigrant women living in the southeast region of the U.S. The fourteen items of the Diabetes Knowledge Test were used to assess the diabetes knowledge level of Korean American women. A multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the interaction effect between social support and education on diabetes knowledge. RESULTS: Only 6% of the participants presented a good diabetes knowledge level, 12.5% had a poor level, and the majority (81.5%) had a moderate level. We found a significant interaction effect between social support and education on diabetes knowledge. The highest diabetes knowledge was observed when individuals with a lower education level had higher social support. CONCLUSION: Future health practices and policies may focus on increasing knowledge among Korean American women with lower education levels and lower social support. Implementing peer-led initiatives can enhance diabetes knowledge and encourage better self-care practices within the community.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study examined how resilience and coping strategies were associated with depressive symptoms among Korean American older adults during COVID-19. The prevalent depressive symptoms and low use of mental health services in this population have raised significant concerns among healthcare professionals. Therefore, this study aims to understand the relationships between resilience and coping types on depressive symptoms and provide valuable insights into addressing these issues within this ethnic group. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 132 Korean American older adults. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed to assess the effect of sociodemographic factors (age, gender, marital status, years of living in the U.S., self-rated health, financial security), resilience, and coping strategies (problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, avoidant coping) on depressive symptoms. Next, the interactions between resilience and three coping strategies for depressive symptoms were tested. RESULTS: The findings show that depressive symptoms were associated with financial security and avoidant coping. Also, resilience interacted with avoidant coping and emotion-focused coping. Among the participants with low resilience, depressive symptoms increased rapidly when avoidant and emotion-focused coping strategies increased, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study emphasizes the importance of culturally tailored interventions to promote resilience and decrease avoidant and emotion-focused coping among Korean American older adults.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association between adherence to 24-h movement guidelines and metabolic syndrome (MetS) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. STUDY DESIGN: Repeated cross-sectional design. METHODS: We selected 10,882 adults (2019: n = 5710; 2020: n = 5172) aged ≥20 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Domain-specific physical activity and sedentary behavior were assessed using a global physical activity questionnaire. We also measured the typical sleep duration (h/day) on weekdays and weekends. MetS was defined as the presence of more than three risk factors. RESULTS: During the COVID-19 pandemic, transportation-related physical activity decreased, while the prevalence of abdominal obesity (+3.3 %) and low HDL-C levels (+3.1 %) increased significantly. An elevated risk of MetS was observed in the lower aerobic (odds ratio [OR], 1.28; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-1.58; P = 0.019) and muscular exercise (OR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.04-1.66; P = 0.023) groups and in the high sedentary behavior (OR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.00-1.51; P = 0.049) during the pandemic. Sensitivity analysis stratified by sex showed similar patterns with more pronounced changes in MetS components in males. The models also showed significant associations between aerobic physical activity, strength exercises, and sedentary behavior with MetS in males and females. CONCLUSIONS: Although sedentary behavior and sleep time remained unchanged, a significant decrease in transportation-related physical activity was observed during the pandemic. Moreover, our findings revealed that aerobic physical activity, strength exercise, and sedentary time during the pandemic were associated with an increased MetS risk. These results highlight the importance of promoting physical activity, particularly during periods of social restriction, to mitigate the pandemic's negative effects on metabolic health.

RESUMEN

The genus Peronospora is the largest genus of the oomycetes, fungus-like members of the kingdom Straminipila that also contains amoeboid (e.g., Leukarachnion) and plant-like (e.g., Laminaria) lifeforms. Peronospora species are obligate biotrophic plant pathogens, causing high economic losses in various crops and ornamentals, including Plantago species. Several species of Plantago are used as speciality crops and medicinal plants. In this study, Peronospora species parasitic on Plantago were investigated based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses using two nuclear (ITS, nrLSU) loci and one mitochondrial (cox2) locus. As a result of these investigations, 10 new species are added to the already known Peronospora species on Plantago. Interestingly, it was found that four independent species are parasitic to Plantago major, highlighting that the reliance on the host plant for pathogen determination can be misleading in Peronospora. Taking this into account, morphological and phylogenetic analyses should be conducted as a prerequisite for effective quarantine regulations and phytosanitary measures. RESUMEN

STUDY QUESTION: Do cortisol/glucocorticoid receptors play an active role in the human ovary during ovulation and early luteinization? SUMMARY ANSWER: The ovulatory hCG stimulation-induced glucocorticoid receptor signaling plays a crucial role in regulating steroidogenesis and ovulatory cascade in human periovulatory follicles. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Previous studies reported an increase in cortisol levels in the human follicular fluid after the LH surge or ovulatory hCG administration. However, little is known about the role of cortisol/glucocorticoid receptors in the ovulatory process and luteinization in humans. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: This study was an experimental prospective clinical and laboratory-based study. An in vivo experimental study was accomplished utilizing the dominant ovarian follicles from 38 premenopausal women undergoing laparoscopic sterilization. An in vitro experimental study was completed using the primary human granulosa/lutein cells (hGLC) from 26 premenopausal women undergoing IVF. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: This study was conducted in a private fertility clinic and academic medical centers. Dominant ovarian follicles were collected before the LH surge and at defined times after hCG administration from women undergoing laparoscopic sterilization. Primary hGLC were collected from women undergoing IVF. hGLC were treated without or with hCG in the absence or presence of RU486 (20 µM; dual antagonist for progesterone receptor and glucocorticoid receptor) or CORT125281 (50 µM; selective glucocorticoid receptor antagonist) for 12 or 36 h. The expression of genes involved in glucocorticoid receptor signaling, steroidogenesis, and ovulatory cascade was studied with RT-quantitative PCR and western blotting. The production of cortisol, corticosterone, and progesterone was assessed by hormone assay kits. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: hCG administration upregulated the expression of hydroxysteroid 11-beta dehydrogenase 1 (HSD11B1), nuclear receptor subfamily 3 group C member 1 (NR3C1), FKBP prolyl isomerase 5 (FKBP5), and FKBP prolyl isomerase 4 (FKBP4) in human ovulatory follicles and in hGLC (P < 0.05). RU486 and CORT125281 reduced hCG-induced increases in progesterone and cortisol production in hGLC. The expression of genes involved in glucocorticoid receptor signaling, steroidogenesis, and the key ovulatory process was reduced by RU486 and/or CORT125281 in hGLC. LARGE SCALE DATA: N/A. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: The role of cortisol/glucocorticoid receptors demonstrated using the hGLC model may not fully reflect their physiological roles in vivo. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: Successful ovulation and luteinization are essential for female fertility. Women with dysregulated cortisol levels often suffer from anovulatory infertility. Deciphering the functional role of glucocorticoid receptor signaling in human periovulatory follicles enhances our knowledge of basic ovarian physiology and may provide therapeutic insights into treating infertility in women. RESUMEN

We present the study of B[over ¯]^{0}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{±}p[over ¯] decays based on 772×10^{6} BB[over ¯] events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. The Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} candidates are reconstructed via their decay to Λ_{c}^{+}π^{∓} and Λ_{c}^{+} decays to pK^{-}π^{+}, pK_{S}^{0}, and Λπ^{+} final states. The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+}p[over ¯])=(1.09±0.06±0.07)×10^{-4} and B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-}p[over ¯])=(1.84±0.11±0.12)×10^{-4}, which are consistent with the world average values with improved precision. A new structure is found in the M_{Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{±}} spectrum with a significance of 4.2σ including systematic uncertainty. The structure is possibly an excited Λ_{c}^{+} and is tentatively named Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}. Its mass and width are measured to be (2913.8±5.6±3.8) MeV/c^{2} and (51.8±20.0±18.8) MeV, respectively. The products of branching fractions for the Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} are measured to be B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}p[over ¯])×B(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+})=(9.5±3.6±1.6)×10^{-6} and B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}p[over ¯])×B(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-})=(1.24±0.35±0.10)×10^{-5}. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

RESUMEN

We study B^{+}→π^{+}π^{0}π^{0} using 711 fb^{-1} of data collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. We measure an inclusive branching fraction of (19.0±1.5±1.4)×10^{-6} and an inclusive CP asymmetry of (9.2±6.8±0.7)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic, and a B^{+}→ρ(770)^{+}π^{0} branching fraction of (11.2±1.1±0.9_{-1.6}^{+0.8})×10^{-6}, where the third uncertainty is due to possible interference with B^{+}→ρ(1450)^{+}π^{0}. We present the first observation of a structure around 1 GeV/c^{2} in the π^{0}π^{0} mass spectrum, with a significance of 6.4σ, and measure a branching fraction to be (6.9±0.9±0.6)×10^{-6}. We also report a measurement of local CP asymmetry in this structure.

RESUMEN

Using the data sample of 980 fb^{-1} collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider, we present the results of an investigation of the Λπ^{+} and Λπ^{-} invariant mass distributions looking for substructure in the decay Λ_{c}^{+}→Λπ^{+}π^{+}π^{-}. We find a significant signal in each mass distribution. When interpreted as resonances, we find for the Λπ^{+} (Λπ^{-}) combination a mass of 1434.3±0.6(stat)±0.9(syst) MeV/c^{2} [1438.5±0.9(stat)±2.5(syst) MeV/c^{2}], an intrinsic width of 11.5±2.8(stat)±5.3(syst) MeV/c^{2} [33.0±7.5(stat)±23.6(syst) MeV/c^{2}] with a significance of 7.5σ (6.2σ). As these two signals are very close to the K[over ¯]N threshold, we also investigate the possibility of a K[over ¯]N cusp, and find that we cannot discriminate between these two interpretations due to the limited size of the data sample.

RESUMEN

The first simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V_{ub} using inclusive and exclusive decays is performed with the full Belle data set at the ϒ(4S) resonance, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb^{-1}. We analyze collision events in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in hadronic modes. This allows for the reconstruction of the hadronic X_{u} system of the semileptonic b→uℓν[over ¯]_{ℓ} decay. We separate exclusive B→πℓν[over ¯]_{ℓ} decays from other inclusive B→X_{u}ℓν[over ¯]_{ℓ} and backgrounds with a two-dimensional fit that utilizes the number of charged pions in the X_{u} system and the four-momentum transfer q^{2} between the B and X_{u} systems. Combining our measurement with information from lattice QCD and QCD calculations of the inclusive partial rate as well as external experimental information on the shape of the B→πℓν[over ¯]_{ℓ} form factor, we determine |V_{ub}^{excl}|=(3.78±0.23±0.16±0.14)×10^{-3} and |V_{ub}^{incl}|=(3.88±0.20±0.31±0.09)×10^{-3}, respectively, with the uncertainties being the statistical error, systematic errors, and theory errors. The ratio of |V_{ub}^{excl}|/|V_{ub}^{incl}|=0.97±0.12 is compatible with unity.

RESUMEN

We report on a search for a heavy Majorana neutrino in the decays τ^{-}→π^{-}ν_{h}, ν_{h}→π^{±}ℓ^{∓}, ℓ=e, µ. The results are obtained using the full data sample of 988 fb^{-1} collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e^{+}e^{-} collider, which contains 912×10^{6} ττ pairs. We observe no significant signal and set 95% CL upper limits on the couplings of the heavy right-handed neutrinos to the conventional standard model left-handed neutrinos in the mass range 0.2-1.6 GeV/c^{2}. This is the first study of a mixed couplings of heavy neutrinos to τ leptons and light-flavor leptons.

RESUMEN

We report the first measurement of the Michel parameter ξ^{'} in the τ^{-}→µ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{µ}ν_{τ} decay with a new method proposed just recently. The measurement is based on the reconstruction of the τ^{-}→µ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{µ}ν_{τ} events with subsequent muon decay in flight in the Belle central drift chamber. The analyzed data sample of 988 fb^{-1} collected by the Belle detector corresponds to approximately 912×10^{6} τ^{+}τ^{-} pairs. We measure ξ^{'}=0.22±0.94(stat)±0.42(syst), which is in agreement with the standard model prediction of ξ^{'}=1. Statistical uncertainty dominates in this study, being a limiting factor, while systematic uncertainty is well under control. Our analysis proved the practicability of this promising method and its prospects for further precise measurement in future experiments.

RESUMEN

We present a search for the lepton flavor violating decays B^{+}→K^{+}τ^{±}ℓ^{∓}, with ℓ=(e,µ), using the full data sample of 772×10^{6} BB[over ¯] pairs recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. We use events in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. We find no evidence for B^{±}→K^{±}τℓ decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at the 90% confidence level in the (1-3)×10^{-5} range. The obtained limits are the world's best results.

RESUMEN

AIM: To report the prevalence of pericardial diverticulum of the right lateral superior aortic recess (RSAR) on computed tomography (CT), to analyse the structural CT findings of whether or not the structure is large enough to be seen on chest radiographs, and to describe changes in size and shape of RSAR on follow-up CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A well-circumscribed, fluid-attenuation lesion in the anterior mediastinum with the following CT features was defined as a pericardial diverticulum of the RSAR: no enhancing wall, communication with the RSAR, abutment to the heart with an acute angle, and moulding by adjacent structures. Chest CT images of 31 patients with the diverticulum were evaluated, including four selected from 1,130 consecutive patients (0.4%). RESULTS: The diverticulum projected ventrally from the RSAR and its largest size on axial CT ranged between 12-56 mm. Although the RSAR and the largest diverticular portion were usually seen on the same axial image (n=19), the latter sometimes lay above (n=1) or below (n=11) the former. On sagittal images, the last 11 diverticula resembled teardrops hanging from the RSAR by small stems. All of the 24 patients, each with 1-31 follow-up CT examinations, showed size fluctuations ranging between 1-46 mm (mean, 16 mm) during a follow-up period of 0.5-172 months (mean, 65 months). The diverticulum was not identifiable in five cases and was identifiable but did not show a connection with the RSAR in three cases when the diverticulum was smallest in size. CONCLUSIONS: In cases of cystic anterior mediastinal mass, a deliberate search for its connection with the RSAR on all available CT images including previous studies is necessary for the diagnosis of pericardial diverticulum of the RSAR.

RESUMEN

AIM: To review the imaging characteristics of granular cell tumours in the head and neck and assess their associations with pathological findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven patients (10 [91%] women, mean age 43 years) with histopathologically confirmed granular cell tumours were included in this study. Preoperative imaging studies were performed, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or ultrasound. The location of the tumours, their imaging features, and histopathological findings were analysed. RESULTS: Among the 11 granular cell tumours, four (36%), three (27%), and two (18%) tumours were found in the submucosal layer, subcutaneous layer, and intramuscular area, respectively. On CT, all tumours exhibited homogeneous iso-attenuating enhancement compared with adjacent muscle, and nine out of the 11 tumours (81%) demonstrated well-defined margins. On T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), four out of five tumours (80%) demonstrated iso-signal intensity compared with adjacent muscles, and four tumours (80%) exhibited homogeneous signal intensity. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values ranged from 0.68-0.81 × 10-3 mm2/s. Histopathological examination revealed densely packed tumour cells with variable amounts of fibrous stroma. CONCLUSION: Granular cell tumours were characterised by well-defined and iso-signals on T2WI and low mean ADC values, and were predominantly located in the submucosal, subcutaneous, or intramuscular areas in middle-aged women. The characteristic locations, demographic characteristics, and imaging findings can help to differentiate granular cell tumours from other soft-tissue tumours in the head and neck.

RESUMEN

AIM: To investigate computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of skull bases involving anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was undertaken to identify an institutional historical cohort of 17 patients with confirmed AAV who underwent CT or MRI and had skull base involvement between 2002 and 2021. Two radiologists reviewed the extent and features of the lesions, bone changes, and other MRI findings. RESULTS: A total of 17 patients (12 men; mean age ± standard deviation, 46.5 ± 17.1 years) were selected. AAV presented as infiltrative lesions with involvement at various sites. Most cases involved the paranasal sinuses (PNS; 88%, 15/17), nasopharynx (88%, 15/17), pterygopalatine fossa (82%, 14/17), and parapharyngeal space (82%, 14/17), frequently accompanied by mucosal irregularity of the PNS and nasopharynx (71%, 12/17). Central skull base and temporal bone involvement were seen in 53% (9/17) and 38% (6/16) of cases, respectively. On T1-weighted imaging (WI) and T2WI MRI, all lesions (15/15) showed predominant signal iso-intensity to grey matter. CONCLUSIONS: Although radiological findings of AAV are non-specific and skull base involvement is less common, AAV may be considered if infiltrative lesions predominantly involving the PNS, nasopharynx, pterygopalatine fossa, and parapharyngeal space with combined bone changes of skull base are seen.

RESUMEN

When using a sparse array, locating the target signal of a high-frequency component is difficult. Although forecasting the direction in a sparse situation is challenging, the frequency-wavenumber (f-k) spectrum can simultaneously determine the direction and frequency of the analyzed signal. The striation of the f-k spectrum shifts along the wavenumber axis in a sparse situation, which reduces the spatial resolution required to determine the target's direction using the f-k spectrum. In this study, f-k spectra of a high-frequency signal were used for near-field source localization. Snapping shrimp sounds (5-24 kHz) from SAVEX15 (a shallow-water acoustic variability experiment conducted in May 2015) were used as the data source, and a simulation was used to evaluate the proposed method. Beam steering was performed before creating the f-k spectrum to improve spatial resolution. We found that the spatial resolution was improved, and the location of the sound source could be determined when a signal with beam steering was utilized. The shrimp sound from SAVEX15, a near-field broadband signal, was used to determine the shrimp's location (range, 38 m; depth, 100 m) and the tilt of the vertical line array. These results suggest that the proposed analysis helps to accurately estimate the location of sound source.
