Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is characterized by glucose intolerance in pregnant women without a previous diagnosis of diabetes. While the etiology of GDM remains elusive, the close association of GDM with increased maternal adiposity and advanced gestational age implicates insulin resistance as a culpable factor for the pathogenesis of GDM. Pregnancy is accompanied by the physiological induction of insulin resistance in the mother secondary to maternal weight gain. This effect serves to spare blood glucose for the fetus. To overcome insulin resistance, maternal ß-cells are conditioned to release more insulin into the blood. Such an adaptive response, termed ß-cell compensation, is essential for maintaining normal maternal metabolism. ß-cell compensation culminates in the expansion of ß-cell mass and augmentation of ß-cell function, accounting for increased insulin synthesis and secretion. As a result, a vast majority of mothers are protected from developing GDM during pregnancy. In at-risk pregnant women, ß-cells fail to compensate for maternal insulin resistance, contributing to insulin insufficiency and GDM. However, gestational ß-cell compensation ensues in early pregnancy, prior to the establishment of insulin resistance in late pregnancy. How ß-cells compensate for pregnancy and what causes ß-cell failure in GDM are subjects of investigation. In this mini-review, we will provide clinical and preclinical evidence that ß-cell compensation is pivotal for overriding maternal insulin resistance to protect against GDM. We will highlight key molecules whose functions are critical for integrating gestational hormones to ß-cell compensation for pregnancy. We will provide mechanistic insights into ß-cell decompensation in the etiology of GDM.

Bacterial symbionts are crucial to the biology of Bactrocera dorsalis. With larval diet (fruit host) being a key factor that determines microbiome composition and with B. dorsalis using more than 400 fruits as hosts, it is unclear if certain bacterial symbionts are preserved and are passed on to B. dorsalis progenies despite changes in larval diet. Here, we conducted a fly rearing experiment to characterize diet-induced changes in the microbiome of female B. dorsalis. In order to explicitly investigate the impacts of larval diet on the microbiome, including potential stable bacterial constituents of B. dorsalis, we performed 16S rRNA sequencing on the gut tissues of teneral female flies reared from four different host fruits (guava, mango, papaya, and rose apple) infested using a single cohort of wild B. dorsalis that emerged from tropical almond (mother flies). Although B. dorsalis-associated microbiota were predominantly shaped by the larval diet, some major bacterial species from the mother flies were retained in progenies raised on different larval diets. With some variation, Klebsiella (ASV 1 and 2), Morganella (ASV 3), and Providencia (ASV 6) were the major bacterial symbionts that were stable and made up 0.1-80% of the gut and ovipositor microbiome of female teneral flies reared on different host fruits. Our results suggest that certain groups of bacteria are stably associated with female B. dorsalis across larval diets. These findings provide a basis for unexplored research on symbiotic bacterial function in B. dorsalis and may aid in the development of novel management techniques against this devastating pest of horticultural importance.

The interface heat transfer of two layers induced by van der Waals (vdW) contacts is theoretically investigated, based on first-principles calculations at low temperatures. The results suggest that out-of-plane acoustic phonons with low frequencies dominate the interface thermal transport due to the vdW interaction. The interface thermal conductivity is proportional to the cubic of temperature at very low temperatures, but becomes linearly proportional to temperature as temperature increases. We show that manipulating the strain alters vdW coupling, leading to increased interfacial thermal conductivity at the interface. Our findings provide valuable insights into the interface heat transport in vdW heterostructures and support further design and optimization of electronic and optoelectronic nanodevices based on vdW contacts.

Previous experiments and theories have shown the existence of heavy-light-heavy (HLH) reactivity oscillation in the Cl + CH4 reaction and anticipated that similar oscillations should exist in many HLH reactions involving polyatomic reagents. However, the total reaction probabilities for the Cl + CHD3 → HCl + CD3 reaction exhibit only a step-like feature, and the total reaction probabilities for Cl + CHT3 → HCl + CT3 do not show any structure at all. Here, we report seven-dimensional state-to-state quantum dynamics studies for this reaction on the FI-NN PES, and we demonstrate that HLH reactivity oscillations also exist in these two reactions, manifesting as peaks in the reaction probabilities for low product rotational states. These oscillations, however, are obscured in the total reaction probability because of the higher excitation of j ≥ 2 product rotational states. Furthermore, the isotope replacement of nonreactive hydrogen with deuterium and tritium significantly enhances reactivity at collision energies above 0.112 eV, indicating an inverse secondary isotope effect on the probabilities, which is proved to be also caused by HLH mass combination. We also demonstrate that the highly rotational excitation of CHD3 substantially enhances reactivity and the HLH oscillations, similar to HLH triatomic reactions. These observations are completely different from those in the H + CHD3 reaction, which is also a late-barrier reaction. Therefore, the HLH mass combination is very important, which affects not only the reactivity oscillation but also the amplitude and product rotational state distribution and makes the initial rotation excitation play a pivotal role in the reaction.

An accurate, global, full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) of NaCl + NaCl has been constructed by the fundamental invariant-neural network (FI-NN) fitting based on roughly 13,000 ab initio energies at the level of CCSD(T)-F12a/aug-cc-pVTZ, with the small fitting error of 0.16 meV. Extensive quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) calculations were performed on this PES to investigate the energy transfer process of the NaCl + NaCl collision at four different collision energies. Various quantities were obtained, including the cross-sections, energy transfer probability, average energy transfer, and collision lifetime. The probabilities of energy transfer (P(ΔE)) for prompt trajectories, nonreactive trajectories, and reactive trajectories deviate from a simple exponential decay pattern. Instead, a noteworthy probability is observed in the high-energy transfer region, indicative of supercollisions. The formation of the (NaCl)2 complex, coupled with a comparatively extended collision lifetime, promotes vibrational excitation in NaCl molecules. The reactive trajectories exhibit enhanced energy transfer, attributed to the longer lifetime of the NaCl dimer. This study not only provides an accurate and extensive understanding of the NaCl + NaCl collision dynamics but also reveals intriguing phenomena, such as supercollisions and enhanced energy transfer in reactive trajectories, shedding light on the complex intricacies of molecular interactions.

Polanyi's rules predict that a late-barrier reaction yields vibrationally cold products; however, experimental studies showed that the H2 product from the late-barrier H + H2O(|04⟩-) and H + HOD(vOH = 4) reactions is vibrationally hot. Here, we report a potential-averaged five-dimensional state-to-state quantum dynamics study for the H + HOD(vOH = 0-4) → H2 + OD reactions on a highly accurate potential energy surface with the total angular momentum J = 0. It is found that with the HOD vibration excitation increasing from vOH = 1 to 4, the product H2 becomes increasingly vibrationally excited and manifests a typical characteristic of an early barrier reaction for vOH = 3 to 4. Analysis of the scattering wave functions revealed that vibrational excitation in the breaking OH bond moves the location of dynamical saddle point from product side to reactant side, transforming the reaction into an early barrier reaction. Interestingly, pronounced oscillatory structures in the total and product vibrational-state-resolved reaction probabilities were observed for the H + HOD(vOH = 3, 4) reactions, in particular at low collision energies, which originate from the Feshbach resonance states trapped in the bending/torsion excited vibrational adiabatic potential wells in the entrance region due to van der Waals interactions.

The 6D time-dependent wave packet calculations were performed to explore H2 dissociation on Ag, Au, and two AgAu alloy surfaces, using four newly fitted potential energy surfaces based on the neural network fitting to density functional theory energy points. The ligand effect resulting from the Ag-Au interaction causes a reduction in the barrier height for H2+Ag/Au(111) compared to H2+Ag(111). However, the scenario is reversed for H2+Au/Ag(111) and H2+Au(111). The 6D dissociation probabilities of H2 on Ag/Au(111) surfaces are significantly higher than those on the pure Ag(111) surface, but the corresponding results for H2 on Au/Ag(111) surfaces are substantially lower than those on the pure Au(111) surface. The reactivity of H2 on Au(111) is larger than that on Ag(111), despite Ag(111) having a slightly lower static barrier height. This can be attributed to the exceptionally small dissociation probabilities at the hcp and fcc regions, which are at least 100 times smaller compared to those at the bridge or top site for H2+Ag(111). Due to the late barrier being more pronounced, the vibrational excitation of H2 on Ag(111) is more effective in promoting the reaction than on Au(111). Moreover, a high degree of alignment dependence is detected for the four reactions, where the H2 dissociation has the highest probability at the helicopter alignment, as opposed to the cartwheel alignment.

This study presents a parallel algorithm for high-dimensional quantum dynamics simulations in poly atomic reactions, integrating distributed- and shared-memory models. The distributions of the wave function and potential energy matrix across message passing interface processes are based on bundled radial and angular dimensions, with implementations featuring either two- or one-sided communication schemes. Using realistic parameters for the H + NH3 reaction, performance assessment reveals linear scalability, exceeding 90% efficiency with up to 600 processors. In addition, owing to the universal and concise structure, the algorithm demonstrates remarkable extensibility to diverse reaction systems, as demonstrated by successes with six-atom and four-atom reactions. This work establishes a robust foundation for high-dimensional dynamics studies, showcasing the algorithm's efficiency, scalability, and adaptability. The algorithm's potential as a valuable tool for unraveling quantum dynamics complexities is underscored, paving the way for future advancements in the field.

We present a comprehensive investigation into the dissociative chemisorption of HOD on a rigid Ni(100) surface using an approximate full-dimensional (9D) quantum dynamics approach, which was based on the time-dependent wave-packet calculations on a full-dimensional potential energy surface obtained through neural network fitting to density functional theory energy points. The approximate-9D probabilities were computed by averaging the seven-dimensional (7D) site-specific dissociation probabilities across six impact sites with appropriate relative weights. Our results uncover a distinctive bond-selective effect, demonstrating that the vibrational excitation of a specific bond substantially enhances the cleavage of that excited bond. The product branching ratios are substantially influenced by which bond undergoes excitation, exhibiting a clear preference for the product formed through the cleavage of the excited bond over the alternative product.

PURPOSE: Primary aldosteronism (PA) diagnosis is affected by antihypertensive drugs that are commonly taken by patients with suspected PA. In this study, we developed and validated a diagnostic model for screening PA without drug washout. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 1095 patients diagnosed with PA or essential hypertension. Patients were randomly grouped into training and validation sets at a 7:3 ratio. Baseline characteristics, plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC), and direct renin concentration (DRC) before and after drug washout were separately recorded, and the aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) was calculated. RESULTS: PAC and ARR were higher and direct renin concentration was lower in patients with PA than in patients with essential hypertension. Furthermore, the differences in blood potassium and sodium concentrations and hypertension grades between the two groups were significant. Using the abbreviations potassium (P), ARR (A), PAC (P), sodium (S), and hypertension grade 3 (3), the model was named PAPS3. The PAPS3 model had a maximum score of 10, with the cutoff value assigned as 5.5; it showed high sensitivity and specificity for screening PA in patients who exhibit difficulty in tolerating drug washout. CONCLUSION: PA screening remains crucial, and standard guidelines should be followed for patients to tolerate washout. The PAPS3 model offers an alternative to minimize risks and enhance diagnostic efficiency in PA for those facing washout challenges. Despite its high accuracy, further validation of this model is warranted through large-scale clinical studies.

As a key molecular scaffold for various flavonoids, naringenin is a value-added chemical with broad pharmaceutical applicability. For efficient production of naringenin from acetate, it is crucial to precisely regulate the carbon flux of the oxaloacetate-phosphoenolpyruvate (OAA-PEP) regulatory node through appropriate pckA expression control, as excessive overexpression of pckA can cause extensive loss of OAA and metabolic imbalance. However, considering the critical impact of pckA on naringenin biosynthesis, the conventional strategy of transcriptional regulation of gene expression is limited in its ability to cover the large and balanced solution space. To overcome this hurdle, in this study, pckA expression was fine-tuned at both the transcriptional and translational levels in a combinatorial expression library for the precise exploration of optimal naringenin production from acetate. Additionally, we identified the effects of regulating pckA expression by validating the correlation between phosphoenolpyruvate kinase (PCK) activity and naringenin production. As a result, the flux-optimized strain exhibited a 49.8-fold increase compared with the unoptimized strain, producing 122.12 mg/L of naringenin. Collectively, this study demonstrated the significance of transcriptional and translational flux rebalancing at the key regulatory node, proposing a pivotal metabolic engineering strategy for the biosynthesis of various flavonoids derived from naringenin using acetate. ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY: In this study, transcriptional and translational regulation of pckA expression at the crucial regulatory node was conducted to optimize naringenin biosynthesis using acetate in E. coli.

Objective: To investigate the changes of spinal vascular blood flow in SD rats after cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal cord injury (SCI) using super-resolution ultrafast ultrasound technology. Methods: A total of 9 SD rats were used to construct SCI models at different segments using a 50 g aneurysm clip. Super-resolution ultrafast ultrasound technology was used to perform vascular blood flow imaging on the spinal cord of rats before and after injury at 6 hours, obtaining quantitative information such as spinal cord vascular density and blood flow velocity. Results: Ultrasound imaging showed that after SCI, the vascular density in the thoracic segment decreased (18.16%±1.04%) more than in the cervical segment (11.42%±1.39%) and lumbar segment (13.88%±1.43%, both P<0.05). The length of the spinal cord with decreased vascular density in the thoracic segment [(4.80±0.34)mm] was longer than that in the cervical segment [(2.80±0.57)mm] and lumbar segment [(3.10±0.36)mm, both P<0.05]. After injury, the decrease of blood flow in the thoracic segment [(8.87±0.85)ml/min] was higher than that in the cervical segment [(4.88±0.56)ml/min] and lumbar segment [(6.19±0.71)ml/min, both P<0.05]. HE staining and Nissl staining showed that the proportion of cavity area after thoracic SCI (11.53%±0.93%) was higher than that in the cervical segment (4.90%±1.72%) and lumbar segment (7.64%±0.84%, both P<0.05). The number of Nissl bodies in the thoracic segment (18.0±5.3) was also lower than that in the cervical segment (32.3±5.1) and lumbar segment (37.0±5.6) (both P<0.05). Conclusions: There are different changes in vascular blood flow after SCI in different segments of rats. The same injury causes the most severe damage to blood vessels in the thoracic spinal cord, followed by the lumbar spinal cord, and the cervical spinal cord has the least damage.

Objective: To analyze the efficacy and safety of first-line treatment with an anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody regimen for primary plasma cell leukemia (pPCL). Methods: Patients diagnosed with pPCL from December 1st, 2018 to July 26th, 2023, receiving first-line treatment of anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody-based regimens across multiple centers including Peking University People's Hospital, Fuxing Hospital of Capital Medical University, Qingdao Municipal Hospital, Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University, Handan Central Hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University and General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University were consecutively included. A total of 24 pPCL patients were included with thirteen being male and eleven being female. The median age [M(Q1, Q3)] was 60 (57, 70) years. Patients were grouped according to peripheral blood plasma cell (PBPC) percentage [5%-19% (n=14) vs ≥20% (n=10)]. Last follow-up date was September 26th, 2023. The median follow-up period was 9.1 (4.2, 15.5) months. Patients' data related with clinical baseline characteristics, efficacy, survival and safety were retrospectively collected. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze risk factors associated with survival. Results: Among 24 pPCL patients, 16 (66.7%) patients had anemia at diagnosis, 13(54.2%) patients had thrombocytopenia, 8 (33.3%) patients had a baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)<40 ml·min-1·(1.73m2)-1, 13 (54.2%) patients had elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels. The median PBPC percentage was 16% (8%, 26%) . Fluorescence in situ hybridization testing indicated that patients harboring 17p deletion, t(4;14) or t(14;16) were 6 (25.0%), 4 (16.7%) and 4 (16.7%), respectively. The overall response rate was 83.3% (20/24). The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 20.5 (95%CI: 15.8-25.2) months, and the median overall survival (OS) was not reached. Estimated 1-year and 2-year PFS and OS rates were 75.0% and 89.1%, 37.5% and 53.4%, respectively. The median PFS and OS for patients with PBPC percentages 5%-19% and≥20% were not reached and 20.5 (95%CI:15.7-25.3) months, 17.8 months and not reached, respectively. There was no significant statistical difference of PFS and OS between two groups (all P>0.05). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that 1p32 deletion was the risk factor associated with PFS (HR=7.7, 95%CI: 1.1-54.9, P=0.043). Seventeen patients (70.8%) developed grade 3-4 hematologic toxicities. Twelve patients (50.0%) developed grade 3-4 thrombocytopenia. Sixteen patients (66.7%) developed infection. All hematologic toxicities and infections were improved after supportive treatment. Conclusion: First-line treatment with anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody-based therapy for pPCL is effective and safe.

Objective: To select chest CT image patterns for the diagnosis of pneumoconiosis and establish a method for determining the profusion of circular small shadows in chest CT. Methods: In April 2021, 66 cases of occupational pneumoconiosis patients with digital radiography (DR) chest radiographs and chest CT imaging data with circular small shadow as the main manifestations were selected as the study objects. 1.5 mm and 5 mm chest CT axial images, 1 mm and 5 mm chest CT coronal multi-plane recombination (MPR) images, and 5 mm chest CT coronal maximum intensity projection (MIP) images were used to observe the different characteristics of pneumoconiosis patients, and were compared and analyzed with DR chest radiographs to establish the experimental chest CT standards. The consistency of the profusion results between the experimental chest CT standards and GBZ 70-2015 Diagnosis of Occupational Pneumoconiosis was verified. Results: All the 66 objects were male, including 33 cases of stage Ⅰ pneumoconiosis, 17 cases of stage Ⅱ pneumoconiosis and 16 cases of stage Ⅲ pneumoconiosis. By observing five chest CT images of 66 objects, we found that chest CT images of different modes could clearly display and identify abnormal images such as small circular shadow, large shadow, small shadow aggregation, honeycomb glass shadow, flake glass shadow, uniform low-profusion glass shadow, mesh glass shadow, cable shadow, linear shadow, subpleural spinous shadow, subpleural nodules, various kinds of emphysema and lung texture distortion and fracture. Small shadow aggregation was usually accompanied by the appearance of large shadow. The vascular shadows in 5 mm CT images had good ductility, and small nodules were easy to distinguish. The coronal MIP image of 5 mm chest CT used edge enhancement technology, which was prone to small shadow fusion and fibrotic shadow fusion. The coronal MPR image of 5 mm chest CT was highly consistent with the DR chest radiographs in terms of the integrity of film reading. GBZ 70-2015 standard was used to compare the profusion of DR chest radiographs and 5 mm chest CT coronal MPR images of 66 objects, and the consistency test Kappa=0.64. GBZ 70-2015 standard and experimental chest CT standard were used to compare the profusion results of DR chest radiographs and 5 mm chest CT coronal MPR images of 66 objects, respectively, and the consistency test Kappa=0.80, with high consistency. Conclusion: 5 mm coronal MPR image is suitable for chest CT imaging in the diagnosis of pneumoconiosis. Following the selection path and method of GBZ 70-2015 profusion criterion, the established experimental chest CT standard in determining the profusion of small circular shadows in 5 mm coronal MPR images of chest CT with pneumoconiosis has a high consistency with GBZ 70-2015 standard.

The importance of quantum-mechanical tunneling becomes increasingly recognized in chemical reactions involving hydrogen as well as heavier atoms. Here we report concerted heavy-atom tunneling in an oxygen-oxygen bond breaking reaction from cyclic beryllium peroxide to linear dioxide in cryogenic Ne matrix, as evidenced by subtle temperature-dependent reaction kinetics and unusually large kinetic isotope effects. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the tunneling rate can be tuned through noble gas atom coordination on the electrophilic beryllium center of Be(O2), as the half-life dramatically increased from 0.1 h for NeBe(O2) at 3 K to 12.8 h for ArBe(O2). Quantum chemistry and instanton theory calculations reveal that noble gas coordination notably stabilizes the reactants and transition states, increases the barrier heights and widths, and consequently reduces the reaction rate drastically. The calculated rates and in particular kinetic isotope effects are in good agreement with experiment.

Broadband supercontinuum (SC) light sources generated through nonlinear effects in solid-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have been widely used in spectroscopy, metrology, and microscopy, leading to great application successes. The short-wavelength extension of such SC sources, a longstanding challenge, has been the subject of intensive study over the past two decades. However, the exact mechanism of blue and ultraviolet light generation, especially for some resonance spectral peaks in the short-wavelength regime, is not yet fully understood. Here, we demonstrate that the effect of inter-modal dispersive-wave radiation, which results from phase matching between pump pulses at the fundamental optical mode and packets of linear waves at some higher-order modes (HOMs) propagating in the PCF core, might be one of the critical mechanisms that can result in some resonance spectral components with wavelengths much shorter than that of the pump light. We observed in an experiment that several spectral peaks resided in the blue and ultraviolet regimes of the SC spectrum, whose central wavelengths can be tuned by varying the PCF-core diameter. These experimental results can be interpreted well using the inter-modal phase-matching theory, providing some useful insights into the SC generation process.

Despite being one of the most destructive invasive species of ants, only two natural enemies are known currently for Wasmannia auropunctata, commonly known as the electric ant or little fire ant. Because viruses can be effective biological control agents against many insect pests, including ants, a metagenomics/next-generation sequencing approach was used to facilitate discovery of virus sequences from the transcriptomes of W. auropunctata. Five new and complete positive sense, single-stranded RNA virus genomes, and one new negative sense, single-stranded RNA virus genome were identified, sequenced, and characterized from W. auropunctata collected in Argentina by this approach, including a dicistrovirus (Electric ant dicistrovirus), two polycipiviruses (Electric ant polycipivirus 1; Electric ant polycipivirus 2), a solinvivirus (Electric ant solinvivirus), a divergent genome with similarity to an unclassified group in the Picornavirales (Electric ant virus 1), and a rhabdovirus (Electric ant rhabdovirus). An additional virus genome was detected that is likely Solenopsis invicta virus 10 (MH727527). The virus genome sequences were absent from the transcriptomes of W. auropunctata collected in the USA (Hawaii and Florida). Additional limited field surveys corroborated the absence of these viruses in regions where the electric ant is invasive (the USA and Australia). The replicative genome strand of four of the viruses (Electric ant polycipivirus 2, Electric ant solinvivirus, Electric ant virus 1, and Solenopsis invicta virus 10 (in the electric ant) was detected in Argentinean-collected W. auropunctata indicating that the ant is a host for these viruses. These are the first virus discoveries to be made from W. auropunctata.

Full-dimensional, ab initio-based many-body potential energy surfaces and dipole moment surfaces constructed using the neural network method for SO2(H2O)n (n = 1,2) complexes are reported. The database of the SO2 1-body PES, SO2(H2O) 2-body PES and SO2(H2O)2 3-body PES consists of 11 952, 79 882 and 84 159 ab initio energies, respectively. All 1-body energies were calculated at the CCSD(T)/CBS(AVTZ:AVQZ) level and all 2,3-body energies were calculated at the DSD-PBEP86/AVTZ level. The database of DMSs is the same as that of PESs and all dipole moments were calculated at the MP2/AVTZ level. Harmonic frequencies and dissociation energies of SO2(H2O) and SO2(H2O)2 were calculated on these PESs and compared with ab initio results to examine the fidelity of these PESs.

We report here a full-dimensional machine learning global potential surface (PES) for the rearrangement of methylhydroxycarbene (H3C-C-OH, 1t). The PES is trained with the fundamental invariant neural network (FI-NN) method on 91 564 ab initio energies calculated at the UCCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVTZ level of theory, covering three possible product channels. FI-NN PES has the correct symmetry properties with respect to permutation of four identical hydrogen atoms and is suitable for dynamics studies of the 1t rearrangement. The averaged root mean square error (RMSE) is 11.4 meV. Six important reaction pathways, as well as the energies and vibrational frequencies at the stationary geometries on these pathways are accurately preproduced by our FI-NN PES. To demonstrate the capacity of the PES, we calculated the rate coefficient of hydrogen migration in -CH3 (path A) and hydrogen migration of -OH (path B) with instanton theory on this PES. Our calculations predicted the half-life of 1t to be 95 min, which is excellent in agreement with experimental observations.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and long-term prognosis of mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP)-associated thrombosis and to gain a better understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. METHODS: The medical records of 14 children with MPP-associated thrombosis between January 2016 and April 2020 were retrospectively reviewed at the Tianjin Children's Hospital. RESULTS: The ages of the patients ranged from 3 to 12 years old. Among the 14 cases, there were five cases of pulmonary embolism, two cases of cerebral infarction, one case of splenic infarction, one case of cardiac embolism, two cases of cardiac embolism with comorbid pulmonary embolism, one case of internal carotid artery and pulmonary embolism, one case of combined internal carotid artery and the cerebral infarction, and one case combined cardiac embolism and lower limb artery embolism. All cases had elevated D-dimer levels. After thrombolysis and anticoagulation therapy, three cases with cerebral embolism still suffered from neurological sequelae. In contrast, the remaining cases did not develop complications. CONCLUSION: MPP-associated thrombosis can occur in any vessel of the body. Thrombosis-associated symptoms may be complex and non-specific. Elevated D-dimer levels in a child with refractory mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia should raise suspicion of thrombosis. The long-term prognosis of thrombosis was favorable after the timely administration of anticoagulant therapy.
