RESUMEN

Cereal and legume proteins, pivotal for human health, significantly influence the quality and stability of processed foods. Despite their importance, the inherent limited functional properties of these natural proteins constrain their utility across various sectors, including the food, packaging, and pharmaceutical industries. Enhancing functional attributes of cereal and legume proteins through scientific and technological interventions is essential to broadening their application. Cold plasma (CP) technology, characterized by its non-toxic, non-thermal nature, presents numerous benefits such as low operational temperatures, lack of external chemical reagents, and cost-effectiveness. It holds the promise of improving proteins' functionality while maximally retaining their nutritional content. This review delves into the pros and cons of different cold plasma generation techniques, elucidates the underlying mechanisms of protein modification via CP, and thoroughly examines research on the application of cold plasma in augmenting the functional properties of proteins. The aim is to furnish theoretical foundations for leveraging CP technology in the modification of cereal and legume proteins, thereby enhancing their practical applicability in diverse industries.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic systemic autoimmune disease, often affects different organs and tissues. It can be effectively managed using drugs; however, attention should be paid to the patient's quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of SLE on female sexual function based on current literature. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for eligible studies published up to November 9, 2021. This review included all English studies that compared the sexual function between women with SLE and healthy women. A meta-analysis was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. RESULTS: A total of 367 records were retrieved from 3 electronic databases. Five studies that involved 710 women with SLE and 2059 healthy women were finally included in this meta-analysis. The result indicated a significant decrease (mean difference = - 1.74, 95% confidence interval - 3.14 to - 0.34, p = 0.02) in the total scores of the Female Sexual Function Index in women with SLE, implying that healthy women had better sexual function than those with SLE. CONCLUSION: The results of our study indicated that SLE could negatively affect the quality of sexual life in terms of desire, arousal, and pain. Thus, close attention should be paid to the sexual function of women with SLE. Effects of miR-129-3p on the biological functions of prostate cancer cells through the targeted regulation of Smad3 were investigated. RT-PCR was used to detect the expression levels of miR-129-3p in prostate cancer tissues and cells and its target gene Smad3 mRNA determined by bioinformatics prediction. Correlation between miR-129-3p and Smad3 was analyzed. MTT assay, cell invasion detection, and apoptosis detection were conducted to detect the effects of miR-129-3p and Smad3 on the proliferation, invasion, and apoptosis of prostate cancer cells. The results of RT-qPCR showed that the expression level of miR-129-3p decreased but that of Smad3 increased in the prostate cancer tissue, and the expression levels of the two were significantly and negatively correlated. Additionally, the expression levels were closely related to the degree of tumor differentiation, TNM staging, and lymph node metastasis (P<0.05). Bioinformatics prediction and subsequent experiments proved that Smad3 was the direct target gene of miR-129-3p. Cell detection confirmed that the overexpression of miR-129-3p or the inhibition of Smad3 expression inhibited the proliferation and invasion of prostate cancer cells, promoting apoptosis, and increased the expression level of pro-apoptotic protein Bax, as well as decreased the expression level of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. Inhibition of miR-129-3p expression had the opposite effect to overexpression. miR-129-3p, which may be a new and potential target for the treatment of prostate cancer, can inhibit the proliferation and invasion of prostate cancer cells and promote their apoptosis by directly targeting Smad3.

Citron kinase (CIT) is a Rho-effector protein kinase that is associated with several types of cancer. However, the role of CIT in prostate cancer (PCa) is unclear. The current study utilized microarray data obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas, which was analyzed via Biometric Research Program array tools. Additionally, reverse transcription-quantitative (RT-q)PCR was performed to compare the mRNA expression of CIT in PCa tissue and in benign prostatic hyperplasia. The protein expression of CIT was detected in a consecutive cohort via immunochemistry and CIT was screened as a potential oncogene in PCa. The results of RT-qPCR demonstrated that the mRNA expression of CIT was increased in PCa tissues. Furthermore, immunochemistry revealed that CIT protein expression was positively associated with age at diagnosis, Gleason grade, serum PSA, clinical T stage, risk group, lymph node invasion and metastasis. When compared with the low expression group, patients with a high CIT expression exhibited shorter survival rates, cancer specific mortalities (CSM) and biochemical recurrence (BCR). In addition, multivariate analysis revealed that CIT was a potential predictor of CSM and BCR. The results revealed that CIT is overexpressed during the malignant progression of PCa and may be a predictor of a poor patient prognosis.
