RESUMEN

In the 1910s, New York suffragette Electra Sparks wrote a series of essays in the Moving Picture News that advocated for cine-therapy treatments for pregnant women. Film was, in her view, the great democratizer of beautiful images, providing high-cultural access to the city's poor. These positive 'mental pictures' were important for her because, she claimed, in order to produce an attractive, healthy child, the mother must be exposed to quality cultural material. Sparks's championing of cinema during its 'second birth' was founded upon the premise of New Thought. This metaphysical Christian doctrine existed alongside the self-help and esoteric publishing domains and testified, above all, to the possibility of the 'mind-cure' of the body through the positive application of 'mental pictures'. Physiologically, their method began best in the womb, where the thoughts of the mother were of utmost importance: the eventual difference between birthing an Elephant Man or an Adonis. This positive maternal impression was commonplace in New Thought literature; it was Sparks's innovation to apply it to cinema. Investigating Sparks's film theory, practice and programming reveals her to be a harbinger of the abiding analogy between mind and motion picture that occupies film theorists to this day.

RESUMEN

Reproduction is one of the most persistently generative themes in the history of science and cinema. Cabbage fairies, clones and monstrous creations have fascinated filmmakers and audiences for more than a century. Today we have grown accustomed not only to the once controversial portrayals of sperm, eggs and embryos in biology and medicine, but also to the artificial wombs and dystopian futures of science fiction and fantasy. Yet, while scholars have examined key films and genres, especially in response to the recent cycle of Hollywood 'mom coms', the analytic potential of reproduction on film as a larger theme remains largely untapped. This introduction to a special issue aims to consolidate a disparate literature by exploring diverse strands of film studies that are rarely considered in the same frame. It traces the contours of a little-studied history, pauses to consider in greater detail a few particularly instructive examples, and underscores some promising lines of inquiry. Along the way, it introduces the six original articles that constitute Reproduction on Film.

BACKGROUND: Currently there are no universally accepted approaches for the prevention of recurrent Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) following the initial infection. Several studies have identified common risk factors for the emergence of recurrent CDI. Identifying patients at high risk for recurrent CDI through the assessment of risk factors at initial diagnosis could enable health care providers to optimize available treatment options. A vancomycin hydrochloride-tapered regimen may be an effective treatment option for the prevention of recurrent CDI following the initial infection. METHODS: In this single-center, prospective study, we examined the efficacy of orally administered vancomycin-tapered regimens for the prevention of recurrent CDI in high-risk patients. High-risk patients were identified using patient risk factors found in a retrospective chart review. The primary objective was to decrease hospital readmissions for recurrent CDI. The secondary objective was to improve the discharge coordination-of-care process by providing a pharmacy benefits evaluation, which ensured vancomycin affordability and assistance in prescription attainment, and discharge counseling. RESULTS: Of the 83 patients enrolled in the study, 5 experienced recurrent CDI (6%). Memorial Health Care System's (Chattanooga, Tennessee) historical recurrent CDI rate was 8.2%. Thirty-one of the 83 patients received a vancomycin-tapered regimen following their initial infection (37%). A pharmacy benefits evaluation was performed on 35 of the 57 patients who were discharged home on vancomycin (61%). CONCLUSIONS: Vancomycin-tapered regimens may provide a cost-effective method for the prevention of recurrent CDI following an initial infection in patients at high risk for recurrence.

RESUMEN

This essay investigates cinema's engagement with the neo-Malthusian movement to control global overpopulation in the long 1960s. It examines the contested production and reception of Z.P.G.: Zero Population Growth (Michael Campus, 1972) and Soylent Green (Richard Fleischer, 1973) to shed new light on the nexus of science, activism and the media. It argues that the history of the movement, usually reconstructed as an elite scientific and political discourse, cannot be fully understood without also taking into account mass-market entertainment.

The recent emergence of multi-sample multi-condition single-cell multi-cohort studies allow researchers to investigate different cell states. The effective integration of multiple large-cohort studies promises biological insights into cells under different conditions that individual studies cannot provide. Here, we present scMerge2, a scalable algorithm that allows data integration of atlas-scale multi-sample multi-condition single-cell studies. We have generalised scMerge2 to enable the merging of millions of cells from single-cell studies generated by various single-cell technologies. Using a large COVID-19 data collection with over five million cells from 1000+ individuals, we demonstrate that scMerge2 enables multi-sample multi-condition scRNA-seq data integration from multiple cohorts and reveals signatures derived from cell-type expression that are more accurate in discriminating disease progression. Further, we demonstrate that scMerge2 can remove dataset variability in CyTOF, imaging mass cytometry and CITE-seq experiments, demonstrating its applicability to a broad spectrum of single-cell profiling technologies.
