RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The treatment of choice for Extra-osseous Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET), a rare neoplasm, is the VAC/IE regimen. This regimen includes Doxorubicin, Vincristine, Cyclophosphamide, Ifosfamide, and Etoposide, all of which have cardiotoxic effects. Myocarditis, a potentially threatening side effect following cancer therapy, can be accurately managed and diagnosed. CASE PRESENTATION: In the current study, we report the case of a 19-year-old female with a mass on the abdominal wall, diagnosed with ES/PNET. She was treated with the VAC/IE regimen. A month after the last session of chemotherapy, she experienced dyspnea. Upon evaluation, a high level of troponin and a low left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were detected via transthoracic echocardiography. She was treated with anti-heart failure drugs, but the response was unsatisfactory. The possibility of Cancer therapy-related myocarditis was suspected, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) confirmed acute myocarditis. This patient exhibited a significant response to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), with her LVEF improving from 30-35% to 50% within three months. CONCLUSION: In this case, based on negative tests and the absence of viral signs and symptoms, Cancer therapy-related myocarditis is highly suspected as the cause of myocarditis. This case underscores the importance of accurately utilizing CMR as a non-invasive method for diagnosing myocarditis. It effectively highlights the identification of reversible myocarditis with appropriate treatment and the notable response to IVIG, suggesting its potential as a favorable treatment for myocarditis in younger patients.

RESUMEN

We investigated the frequency of brain fog in a large cohort of patients with documented coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) who have survived the illness. We also scrutinized the potential risk factors associated with the development of brain fog. Adult patients (18-55 years of age), who were referred to the healthcare facilities anywhere in Fars province from February 19, 2020 to November 20, 2020 were included. All patients had a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis. In a phone call, at least 3 months after their discharge from the hospital, we obtained their current information. A questionnaire was specifically designed for data collection. In total, 2696 patients had the inclusion criteria; 1680 (62.3%) people reported long COVID syndrome (LCS). LCS-associated brain fog was reported by 194 (7.2%) patients. Female sex (odds ratio [OR]: 1.4), respiratory problems at the onset (OR: 1.9), and intensive care unit (ICU) admission (OR: 1.7) were significantly associated with reporting chronic post-COVID "brain fog" by the patients. In this large population-based study, we report that chronic post-COVID "brain fog" has significant associations with sex (female), respiratory symptoms at the onset, and the severity of the illness (ICU admission).

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The first large serosurvey in Iran found a SARS-CoV-2 antibody seroprevalence of 17.1% among the general population in the first wave of the epidemic by April, 2020. The purpose of the current study was to assess the seroprevalence of COVID-19 infection among Iranian general population after the third wave of the disease. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 7411 individuals aged ≥10 years old in 16 cities across 15 provinces in Iran between January and March, 2021. We randomly sampled individuals registered in the Iranian electronic health record system based on their national identification numbers and invited them by telephone to a healthcare center for data collection. Presence of SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG and IgM antibodies was assessed using the SARS-CoV-2 ELISA kits. The participants were also asked about their recent COVID-19-related symptoms, including cough, fever, chills, sore throat, headache, dyspnea, diarrhea, anosmia, conjunctivitis, weakness, myalgia, arthralgia, altered level of consciousness, and chest pain. The seroprevalence was estimated after adjustment for population weighting and test performance. RESULTS: The overall population-weighted seroprevalence adjusted for test performance was 34.2% (95% CI 31.0-37.3), with an estimated 7,667,874 (95% CI 6,950,412-8,362,915) infected individuals from the 16 cities. The seroprevalence varied between the cities, from the highest estimate in Tabriz (39.2% [95% CI 33.0-45.5]) to the lowest estimate in Kerman (16.0% [95% CI 10.7-21.4]). In the 16 cities studied, 50.9% of the seropositive individuals did not report a history of symptoms suggestive of COVID-19, implying an estimation of 3,902,948 (95% CI 3,537,760-4,256,724) asymptomatic infected individuals. CONCLUSIONS: Nearly one in three individuals were exposed to SARS-CoV-2 in the studied cities by March 2021. The seroprevalence increased about two-fold between April, 2020, and March, 2021.

RESUMEN

Oseltamivir and antiviral agents are frequently used for the prevention and treatment of influenza infection. However, resistance to oseltamivir has been reported globally due to a mutation in the Influenza virus neuraminidase gene. Such resistance will be detected by genotyping and phenotyping studies of viral isolates. The recent study aimed to determine the genetic mutation of neuraminidase gene in influenza A (H1N1) viruses isolated from children referred to Shiraz tertiary hospitals during 1 year (2015-2016) with influenza-like symptoms. A total of 300 patients were registered and throat samples were taken. The throat swabs were used for viral RNA extraction. Detection of influenza A (H1N1) was performed using the one-step real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) method. From positive isolates for H1N1, 51 random samples were evaluated for neuraminidase gene mutation with the nested PCR-sequencing method. Of 300 cases, 102 (34%) isolates were detected as influenza A (H1N1) pdm09. Based on sequencing results, 2 of the 44 sequenced isolates exhibited H275Y substitution, which presented oseltamivir resistance. In comparison with reference strain, the phylogenetic analysis of sequenced isolates was classified in genogroup 6B. While this result is the first report of emerging oseltamivir-resistant in the southwest of Iran, it is highly recommended to perform these evaluations on the different geographical regions in any prevalence area to plan treatment strategies for influenza.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with epilepsy (PWE) are particularly over-represented in a very large cohort of patients with COVID-19. We also investigated whether COVID-19 is associated with a different clinical picture or a more severe course of illness in PWE (compared with others). METHODS: All consecutive patients who referred to and admitted at healthcare facilities anywhere in Fars province (located in the south of Iran with a population of 4,851,000 people) from February 19, 2020 until November 20, 2020 were included. RESULTS: A total of 37,968 patients were studied. Eighty-two patients (0.2%) had pre-existing epilepsy. Seizures were significantly more frequent among PWE as a presenting manifestation of COVID-19 compared with that in people without epilepsy (Odds Ratio = 27; p = 0.0001). Furthermore, PWE less often reported cough (significantly) and more often had gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting and anorexia; as trends) compared with those in people without epilepsy. Patients with epilepsy were not differently likely to be intubated or admitted at ICUs. Case fatality rates were not different between the two groups [9.8% in PWE and 8.5% in people without epilepsy; p = 0.690]. CONCLUSION: Patients with epilepsy are not susceptible to contracting COVID-19 more than other individuals. Furthermore, COVID-19 in PWE is not associated with a more severe illness or a poorer prognosis. However, PWE and COVID-19 may present somewhat differently than others with such an illness. Why PWE less often present with cough and more often present with gastrointestinal symptoms is not clear yet and should be investigated and clarified in the future studies.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: We performed a follow-up study of patients with COVID-19 presenting with seizures. METHODS: All consecutive patients with seizures, who were referred to Namazee Hospital, Shiraz, Iran, with a diagnosis of COVID-19, from 10 August 2020 until 20 October 2020 were included in this longitudinal study. The clinical data were collected by the admitting physician. In a follow-up phone call to the discharged patients (after eight weeks or more), we inquired their seizure outcome. RESULTS: In total, 32 patients were studied; 28 patients were followed. Twelve patients (37.5%) presented with a single tonic-clonic seizure and nine (28.1%) had convulsive status epilepticus; one patient had functional (psychogenic) seizures. Ten patients (31.3%) had pre-existing epilepsy, eight others (25%) had pre-existing CNS problems (without epilepsy), one person (3.1%) had pre-existing functional seizures, and 13 individuals (40.1%) neither had epilepsy nor had other CNS problems. Eight patients (28.6%) reported experiencing seizure(s) after being discharged from the hospital; six of these had pre-existing epilepsy and one had pre-existing functional seizures. One patient, who had a newly developed ischemic brain infarction, reported experiencing recurrent seizures. CONCLUSION: Seizures in patients with COVID-19 are either acute symptomatic (in about two-thirds) or an exacerbation of a pre-existing epilepsy/functional seizures (in about one-third). A thorough investigation of the underlying etiology of seizures in patients with COVID-19 is necessary. Seizure outcome in patients, who are hospitalized with COVID-19 and seizures, is generally good.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The aim of the current study was to determine whether COVID-19 is associated with a different presenting clinical picture or a more severe course of illness in people with Down syndrome (DS). METHODS: All consecutive patients who were admitted at healthcare facilities anywhere in Fars province (located in the south of Iran with a population of 4,851,000 people) from 19 February 2020 to 20 November 2020 were included. For every patient with DS, three age- and sex-matched patients with COVID-19 and without any underlying medical conditions were selected as controls. RESULTS: During the study period, 37,968 patients were hospitalized with a diagnosis of COVID-19. Eighteen patients had DS. Patients with DS were significantly more likely to be intubated [7 patients (39%)] compared with those without DS [3 patients (6%)]; p = 0.002. Patients with DS significantly more often died of COVID-19 compared with the controls [8 (44.4%) vs. 1 (1.9%); odds ratio: 24.37; 95% confidence interval 2.39-247.94; p = 0.007]. CONCLUSION: Patients with DS are among the high-risk populations with respect to severe COVID-19 and should receive the vaccine as soon as possible. Furthermore, they should receive more intensive care if they get hospitalized with the illness.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: A life-threatening respiratory disease, coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), has spread across the globe since December 2019. Many prognostic factors have already been put forward to predict the risk of death and other outcomes. The current study is evaluating the survival rate between hypertensive and non-hypertensive infected patients. METHODS: Patients who were included in this study were admitted between 20 February to 1 March 2020 in Fars (southwest of Iran) province hospitals. Data were collected from the electronic base registry which contained demographic information, medical symptoms, and signs, underlying diseases, CT scan results, and final outcome. RESULTS: Of all 1239 positive cases, 159 (12.83%) had known with hypertension ant this group was significantly older than non-hypertensive patients (66.1 years Vs 48.95 years, p < .001). According to Kaplan-Meier survival curve and log-rank test, it was seen hypertensive patients deteriorated more rapidly than non-hypertensive group (p = .032). Moreover, HIV, cardiovascular, and kidney disease were diagnosed as factors that increase the risk of death in hypertensive patients. CONCLUSION: The current study about the survival rate of COVID-19 patients had shown hypertensive patents are in danger of disease severity, although it may be related to their age. Moreover, the probability of other complications like diabetes, smoking, asthma, kidney, and cardiovascular diseases, and either some other infections such as HIV can make the condition complicated and need more consideration to prevent noxious outcomes.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study was to collect the data on the occurrence of seizures in patients with COVID-19 and to clarify the circumstances of the occurrence of seizures in these patients. METHODS: All consecutive patients who referred to healthcare facilities anywhere in Fars province (located in South Iran with a population of 4.851 million people) from February 19 until June 2, 2020, and had confirmed COVID-19 by positive result on polymerase chain reaction testing and seizure were included. RESULTS: During the study period, 6,147 people had confirmed COVID-19 in Fars province, Iran; 110 people died from the illness (case fatality rate 1.79%). During this time period, five people had seizures (seizure rate 0.08%). In four patients, seizure was one of the presenting manifestations, and in one person, it happened during the course of hospital admission. Two patients had status epilepticus. All patients experienced hypoxemia and four of them needed respirator. Two patients had related metabolic derangements and one had cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lymphocytic pleocytosis. Brain imaging was abnormal in three patients. Four patients died. CONCLUSION: New-onset seizures in critically ill patients with COVID-19 should be considered as acute symptomatic seizures and the treating physician should try to determine the etiology of the seizure and manage the cause immediately and appropriately. Detailed clinical, neurological, imaging, and electrophysiological investigations and attempts to isolate SARS-CoV-2 from CSF may clarify the role played by this virus in causing seizures in these patients.

RESUMEN

Background: In a resource-demanding COVID-19 pandemic, guidelines can free up health care resources needed for providing better care to those with COVID-19 and other patients. This study was performed to design a guideline to manage patients with colorectal cancers during the COVID-19pandemic. Methods: To design this guideline, major topics and headings of colon and rectal cancers (CRC) were selected and included. Based on the extent of COVID-19 infection in the community and availability of hospital resources, the guideline has been designed for 2 major COVID-19 phases. Several multidisciplinary discussion sessions were held to review the comments of experts, finalize the data, and write the guideline. Results: This guideline has been prepared in 2 main COVID-19 phases of the community/hospital. Phase A refers to the condition where a large number of COVID-19 patients are admitted to the hospital, but limited surgical ICU beds and facilities are still accessible. In phase B, many people are affected by COVID-19, and all hospital resources are allocated for COVID 19 patients. In phase A, 4 major groups are discussed, including malignant and suspicious colorectal polyps, colon cancers, rectal cancers, and recurrent cancers. The approach to emergent cases, including obstruction, bleeding, and perforation, will be presented in phase B. Conclusion: This guideline is a comprehensive instruction on the approach to colorectal cancers during the COVID-19 pandemic that covers the major topics of colon and rectal cancers in detail.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To assess the effects of a workshop on supportive leadership behaviour (SLB) on the performance of head nurses, using a randomized controlled trial design. BACKGROUND: The effect of transformational leadership on SLB in nursing management is emphasised. METHODS: A total of 110 head nurses working at university hospitals were included randomly in two control and intervention groups. The head nurses in the intervention group participated in supportive leadership training, but the control group did not. Performance in supportive leadership was assessed with a validated instrument, which six subordinates used to assess their head nurse (n = 731). RESULTS: There was a significant difference in SLB scores from baseline to the 3 month follow-up (P < 0.0001). Moreover, the post-intervention scores were significantly higher in the intervention group, compared with the control group (P < 0.0001). The results showed that in the intervention group, the effect sizes were greater for males (50%) than for females (36%) and greater for married participants (42%) than for single participants (37%). CONCLUSION: The workshop on supportive leadership behaviour, particularly the interactive multifaceted training, improved the leadership performance of the head nurses who participated in this study. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGERS: Health policy decision makers should apply SLB, which is a significant leadership style, to improve the outcomes in other groups of health-care management, such as physicians. Future studies are needed to investigate the effects of such workshops in longer periods of follow up.

RESUMEN

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is one of the most common causes of hearing loss (HL) in children. It has been reported that several factors such as eustachian tube dysfunction, insufficiencies in the aeration of the mastoid cells, allergies, immunity, and infections play an important role in the etiology of the disease. Little is known about the role of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in extragastric diseases. Because of the near location of the nose, sinuses, tonsils, and adenoids to the eustachian tube and middle ear, we believe it is possible to have H. pylori in the middle ear. The present study was designed to investigate the presence of H. pylori by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the middle ear effusion of patients with OME. The study was performed on 21 patients, 19 patients were affected bilaterally, and 2 patients were affected unilaterally, from which 40 specimens were collected. OME was diagnosed through findings by otoscopic examination and tympanogram. The middle ear fluid samples were collected under sterile conditions. A total of 40 samples was stored at -80°C until analyzed by PCR assay. From 40 specimens, 2 specimens were serosal and 38 specimens were mucoid. PCR results of the study in assays for Helicobacter pylori were not positive in all collected specimens. Overall, probably there was no H. pylori organism in free-floating form and thus could not be detected by PCR.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Comparing computer and internet based instruction with traditional giving lecture would provide enough evidence to identify best teaching practice. In this study, we compared lecture, interactive internet based and computer based learning regarding medical students' knowledge acquisition and satisfaction in teaching pathophysiology of hematology and oncology. METHODS: Eighty four medical students were randomized into three groups and an identical faculty member conducted the instructions through the above mentioned methods. Students' knowledge was assessed one week before and immediately after the interventions by pre and posttest. Students' satisfaction was assessed using a validated 5-point Likert scale. RESULTS: The results showed that students' satisfaction was significantly higher in interactive internet based group than other ones (p=0.05). There were a significant increase between pre and posttest scores in all groups (p=0.000). We used ANCOVA to compare score changes in the study groups, with posttest scores as the dependent factor and pretest scores as covariate and knowledge acquisition was significantly higher in interactive internet based group than other two groups (p=0.026). CONCLUSION: The study showed that although interactive internet based instruction is a difficult and time consuming method, it is recommended to integrate this method to medical curricula.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Effective leadership is of prime importance in any organization and it goes through changes based on accepted health promotion and behavior change theory. Although there are many leadership styles, transformational leadership, which emphasizes supportive leadership behaviors, seems to be an appropriate style in many settings particularly in the health care and educational sectors which are pressured by high turnover and safety demands. Iran has been moving rapidly forward and its authorities have understood and recognized the importance of matching leadership styles with effective and competent care for success in health care organizations. This study aimed to develop the Supportive Leadership Behaviors Scale based on accepted health and educational theories and to psychometrically test it in the Iranian context. METHODS: The instrument was based on items from established questionnaires. A pilot study validated the instrument which was also cross-validated via re-translation. After validation, 731 participants answered the questionnaire. RESULTS: The instrument was finalized and resulted in a 20-item questionnaire using the exploratory factor analysis, which yielded four factors of support for development, integrity, sincerity and recognition and explaining the supportive leadership behaviors (all above 0.6). Mapping these four measures of leadership behaviors can be beneficial to determine whether effective leadership could support innovation and improvements in medical education and health care organizations on the national level. The reliability measured as Cronbach's alpha was 0.84. CONCLUSION: This new instrument yielded four factors of support for development, integrity, sincerity and recognition and explaining the supportive leadership behaviors which are applicable in health and educational settings and are helpful in improving self -efficacy among health and academic staff.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hereditary nephritis (HN), including Alport syndrome (AS) and thin basement membrane nephropathy (TBMN), is a rare genetic cause of hematuria. A definitive diagnosis requires electron microscopy (EM). Therefore, the clinical characteristics of these conditions are less known. This study aimed to determine the percentage and clinicopathological features of HN in patients from a referral center in Iran. METHODS: We checked kidney biopsy reports from 2007 to 2021 and extracted cases with HN. Fresh specimens of the cases diagnosed in the last two years were stained by immunofluorescence (IF) for collagen type IV alpha chains. EM findings in these cases were re-evaluated and categorized as diffuse glomerular basement membrane (GBM) thinning, definite, and suspicious features of AS. RESULTS: We analyzed 3884 pathology reports of kidney biopsies from 2007 to 2021 and identified 210 patients (5.4%) with HN, with a mean age of 13.78±12.42 years old. Hematuria with proteinuria (53.3%), isolated hematuria (44.2%), and proteinuria with hematuria and increased creatinine (2.5%) were found in these patients. The re-evaluation of EM findings revealed GBM thinning, definite, and suspicious findings of AS in 37.5%, 43.8%, and 18.8% cases, respectively. The most common diagnosis in 32 cases after the IF study was X-linked AS (71.9%), and 6.2% of cases were autosomal recessive AS. TBMN and autosomal dominant AS remained the differential diagnoses in 21.9%. CONCLUSION: It was found that EM is helpful for the primary diagnosis of patients with definite AS. Immunostaining improves the diagnostic sensitivity for the differentiation of those with suspicious EM findings and determines the inheritance pattern. However, a multidisciplinary approach for a subset of cases is required for the best diagnosis and management.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to identify the association between COVID-19 vaccination and prolonged post-COVID symptoms (long-COVID) in adults who reported suffering from this condition. METHODS: This was a retrospective follow-up study of adults with long-COVID syndrome. The data were collected during a phone call to the participants in January-February 2022. We inquired about their current health status and also their vaccination status if they agreed to participate. RESULTS: In total, 1236 people were studied; 543 individuals reported suffering from long long- COVID (43.9%). Chi square test showed that 15 out of 51 people (29.4%) with no vaccination and 528 out of 1185 participants (44.6%) who received at least one dose of any vaccine had long long- COVID symptoms (p = 0.032). CONCLUSIONS: In people who have already contracted COVID-19 and now suffer from long-COVID, receiving a COVID vaccination has a significant association with prolonged symptoms of long-COVID for more than one year after the initial infection. However, vaccines reduce the risk of severe COVID-19 (including reinfections) and its catastrophic consequences (e.g., death). Therefore, it is strongly recommended that all people, even those with a history of COVID-19, receive vaccines to protect themselves against this fatal viral infection.

RESUMEN

Immunosuppression in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an important mechanism of tumor escape. CD200, as an immunosuppressive molecule, is overexpressed in some hematological malignancies and it has also been shown to be an independent prognostic factor in AML. In the current study, simultaneous CD200 expression and Foxp3(+) regulatory T cell levels were investigated in Iranian patients with AML by flow cytometry. We also assessed the effect of CD200-CD200R blockade on Th1 and T-reg cytokine production and T cell proliferation in autologous AML- and monocyte-DC mixed lymphocyte reactions (MLRs). ELISA assay was performed to detect IL-2, IL-12, IFN-γ, IL-10, and TGF-ß production in MLR supernatants. Expression of Foxp3, IL-10, and TGF-ß mRNAs in MLRs were detected by real-time PCR. Our results demonstrated significant overexpression of CD200 (P = 0.001) in association with higher frequencies of Foxp3(+) T cells in AML patients (r = 0.8, P < 0.001). Blocking of CD200-CD200R interaction demonstrated a significant decrease in TGF-ß and IL-10 expression in AML-DC MLRs and a significant increase in IL-12 and IFN-γ expression in monocyte-DC MLRs. Elevated T cell levels with lower Foxp3 intensity was also shown in CD200-CD200R-blocked MLRs. Expression of IL-10 mRNA declined significantly only in AML-DC MLRs where CD200-CD200R interaction was blocked and the same result was observed for TGF-ß and Foxp3 mRNA in both AML- and monocyte-DC MLRs. These data present a significant role for CD200 in suppressing anti-tumor immune response through stimulation of regulatory mechanisms in AML patients and suggest that CD200 may have a prognostic value in this malignancy and its blockade may be used as a target for AML immunotherapy.

RESUMEN

Circulating influenza A virus provided an excellent opportunity to study the adaptation of the influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus to the human host. Particularly, due to the availability of sequences taken from isolates, we could monitor amino acid changes and the stability of mutations that occurred in hemagglutinin (HA). HA is crucial to viral infection because it binds to ciliated cell receptors and mediates the fusion of cells and viral membranes; because antibodies that bind to HA may block virus entry to the cell, this protein is subjected to high selective pressure. In this study, the locations of mutations in the structures of mutant HA were analyzed and the three-dimensional (3D) structures of these mutations were modeled in I-TASSER. Also, the location of these mutations was visualized and studied using Swiss PDB Viewer software and the PyMOL Molecular Graphics System. The crystal structure of the HA from A/California/07/2009 (3LZG) was used for further analysis. The new noncovalent bond formations in mutant luciferases were analyzed via WHAT IF and PIC, and protein stability was evaluated in the iStable server. We identified 33 and 23 mutations in A/Shiraz/106/2015 and A/California/07/2009 isolates, respectively; some mutations are located on the antigenic sites of Sa, Sb, Ca1, Ca2, and Cb HA1 and the fusion peptide of HA2. The results show that with the mutation some interactions are lost and new interactions are formed with other amino acids. The results of the free-energy analysis suggested that these new interactions have a destabilizing effect, which needs confirmation experimentally. IMPORTANCE Due to the fact that the mutations that occurred in the influenza virus HA cause the instability of the protein produced by the virus and antigenic changes and the escape of the virus from the immune system, the mutations that occurred in A/Shiraz/1/2013 were investigated in terms of energy level and stability. The mutations located in a globular portion of the HA are S188T, Q191H, S270P, K285Q, and P299L. On the other hand, the E374K, E46K-B, S124N-B, and I321V mutations are located in the stem portion of the HA (HA2). The change V252L mutation eliminates interactions with Ala181, Phe147, Leu151, and Trp153 and forms new interactions with Gly195, Asn264, Phe161, Met244, Tyr246, Leu165, and Trp167 which can change the stability of the HA structure. The K166Q mutation, which is located within the antigenic site Sa, causes the virus to escape from the immune response.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT), is performed to treat many malignancies such as autologous or allogenic. Despite the success of this method in treating patients, - sometimes some HSCT recipients face problems such as cardiovascular complications. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prevalence of cardiovascular complications in post-transplant patients. METHOD: In order to review the published studies, we examined PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and web of science databases from the beginning to the end of January 2022, and we used tools by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale to evaluate the quality of the studies. RESULT: In this study, 37 articles were included in the meta-analysis and 30,957 patients were examined. Also, the mean age of patients was 35.37 years. Based on the results of the meta-analysis, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), was 16.84%. In addition, other complications related to CVD which include Arrhythmias, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Hypertension, stroke, and mortality were examined in patients who had hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and the resulting amounts were 3.91%, 3.66, 17.71, 0.22%, and 1.53%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the prevalence of cardiovascular disease after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is high and needs special attention.
