RESUMEN

Two isolates (MC-18T and MC-17D), representing the Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, irregular rod-shaped, non-motile, and non-spore-forming actinobacteria, were isolated from clinical breast specimens in Guangzhou, China. The growth of the isolates is enhanced by supplementing 1% Tween-80 on Luria Bertani agar. Optimal growth of the isolates was observed at 37 °C, pH 7-8, and with 1% (w/v) NaCl on Columbia blood agar. Pairwise comparison of the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that isolates MC-18T and MC-17D shared the highest sequence similarities with Corynebacterium liangguodongii 2184T (96.9%), which were lower than the threshold value for species delineation (98.65%). Phylogenetic dendrograms based on the 16S rRNA gene, rpoB gene, and core genomes indicated that two isolates formed a distinct lineage within the genus Corynebacterium. The estimated dDDH, ANIb, ANIm, and AAI values between strain MC-18T and its closely related strains were below the threshold values generally considered for recognizing a new species. The genome DNA G + C contents of both the isolates MC-18T and MC-17D are 60.6%. The two isolates have virulence-related genes of the VF classes of adhesion and antiphagocytosis, and also contain the antimicrobial resistance genes ErmX, mtrA, rpoB2, and RbpA. The major fatty acids (> 10%) of isolates MC-18T and MC-17D were C16:0, C18:1 ω9c, C18:0 and summed feature 5 (anteiso-C18:0 and/or C18:2 ω6,9c). The main respiratory quinone of strain MC-18T was MK-8(H2), and the polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, three unidentified glycolipids, an unidentified aminolipid, and four unidentified phosphoglycolipids. The two isolates lack mycolic acids in the cell envelope. Based on the above findings, the two isolates are considered to represent a novel species of the genus Corynebacterium, for which the name Corynebacterium lipophilum sp. nov. is proposed, with isolate MC-18T (= NBRC 115144T = CCTCC AB 2020201T) as the type strain. An emended description of the Corynebacterium pilbarense is also provided.

RESUMEN

A novel obligate anaerobic organism, designated DONG20-135T, was isolated from human faeces collected in Beijing, PR China. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile and non-spore-forming. Growth occurred at 25‒45 °C (optimum, 30‒35 °C), a pH range of 6-9 (optimum, pH 8) and in the presence of 0‒3.5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.5‒1.5 %). The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c and C10 : 0, the polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, four glycolipids, six aminolipids, three aminophospholipids and four unidentified lipids. No respiratory quinones were detected. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of the strain was A1γ type, containing meso-diaminopimelic acid. The 16S rRNA gene sequences shared a lower identity (<92.7 % similarity) with the described species. The phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and the protein-concatamer tree showed that strain DONG20-135T formed a distinct lineage within the family Erysipelotrichaceae. The genomic DNA G + C content was 42.2 mol%. Based on the results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genomic analyses, strain DONG20-135T represents a novel genus of the family Erysipelotrichaceae, for which the name Copranaerobaculum intestinale gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed (=KCTC 15868T=CGMCC 1.17357T).

OBJECTIVE: Platelets are increasingly considered to play an important role in inflammation and are being regarded as a putative bridge linking mental diseases and inflammatory response. Platelet-associated haematological parameters including mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), platelet to albumin ratio (PAR) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) to platelet ratio (RPR), have been recently investigated as simple, easily available, and inexpensive inflammatory markers. In this study, we aimed is to use large-scale clinical data to study platelet parameters in patients with affective disorders, to further investigate the predictive power of platelet parameters for major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: The retrospective, naturalistic, cross-sectional study analysed the data of 14,007 Chinese affective disorder patients, including 4,801 patients with first-episode MDD, 4,098 patients with recurrent MDD, 3,444 patients with BD manic episodes and 1,664 patients with BD depressive episodes. Meanwhile, 6,847 healthy subjects were served as the control group. The differences in the MPV, PDW, PCT, SII, PLR, PAR, RPR and albumin among different groups were compared, and the contributing factors for the occurrence of MDD or BD were analysed. RESULTS: There were significant differences in MPV, PDW, PCT, SII, PLR, RPR and albumin values among the study groups. In the subjects, patients experiencing BD manic episodes had the highest mean values of MPV and SII, patients experiencing BD depressive episodes had the lowest mean values of platelet counts and PAR, and patients with MDD had the highest mean values of PLR and RDW. The levels of MPV, PDW and albumin were independently correlated with MDD and BD, and they are important predictors for differentiating patients with MDD or BD from healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that different affective disorders have unique platelet parameter variation patterns, highlighting the role of platelet parameters and systemic inflammation in the pathophysiology of MDD and BD.

Strain SZY PN-1 T, representing a novel Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped and yellow-pigmented bacterium, was isolated from a skin sample of a healthy Chinese male. Growth occurred at pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and 10-37 â„ƒ (optimum, 30 â„ƒ) with 0-1.0% (w/v) NaCl in R2A agar. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SZY PN-1 T shared high similarities with two invalid-published species, "Sandaracinobacter sibiricus" RB16-17 (97.1%) and "Sandaracinobacter neustonicus" JCM 30734 (96.6%), respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences together with protein-concatemer tree showed that SZY PN-1 T formed a separate branch within the family Sphingosinicellaceae. The DNA G + C content of the strain SZY PN-1 T was 65.0% (genome). The polar lipid profile included phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, two sphingoglycolipids, diphosphatidylglycerol, five unidentified glycolipids, and seven unidentified lipids. The predominant fatty acids (> 10.0%) were identified as C18:1 ω7c and/or C18:1 ω6c, C17:1 ω6c, C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c. The major respiratory quinone was Q-10. Based on the phenotypic and genotypic features, a novel genus and species, Sandaracinobacteroides hominis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed, with type strain SZY PN-1 T (= KCTC 82150 T = NBRC 114675 T).

Six aerobic Gram-negative bacteria were isolated from seawater in Guangdong Province, P.R. China. Cells were observed to be Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile and non-spore forming. Growth of the designated type strain 19X3-30T occurred at a temperature range of 14-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C), a pH range of 6.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7) and up to 7.5% NaCl (optimum, 1.5%; w/v), and was enhanced by CO2 and L-cysteine supplementation. The major polar lipids identified in strain 19X3-30T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The principal cellular fatty acids profile showed the presence of anteiso-C15:0, anteiso-C17:0 and C18:0 (> 8% of total fatty acids), and the respiratory quinone was ubiquinone 8 (UQ-8). According to the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences, these strains represented a novel species within the family Fastidiosibacteraceae, sharing maximum similarities with Cysteiniphilum litorale DSM 101832T (96.6%) and Cysteiniphilum halobium DSM 103992T (95.3%). Phylogenetic dendrograms based on 16S rRNA gene and protein marker genes from the genomic sequences both indicated that the strains formed a monophyletic lineage closely linked to the genus Cysteiniphilum, which was also supported by the UPGMA dendrogram based on the MALDI-TOF MS profile. The genomic DNA G + C contents of six strains ranged from 38.0% to 38.1%. Based on different taxonomic genomic metrics, phylogeny and phenotypic features, we propose that the strains warrant the assignment to a novel species, for which the name Cysteiniphilum marinum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 19X3-30T (= KCTC 82154T = CGMCC 1.18585T).

Four strains (SYSU SYW-1T, SYW-2, SYW-3 and XLW-1) were isolated from seawater near the shore in Guangdong Province, China. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile and non-spore-forming. Growth was observed at a temperature range of 16-40 °C (optimum, 32 °C), a pH range of 4-8 (optimum, pH 7) and in the presence of up to 10 % (w/v) NaCl. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified phospholipid. The respiratory quinone was ubiquinone 8 (UQ-8), and the predominant fatty acids were C18 : 0 3-OH, C10 : 0, C14 : 0 and C18 : 1ω9c. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene and genome sequences confirmed that these strains represented a novel member of the genus Francisella, with less than 98.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and less than 95 % genomic average nucleotide identity to recognized Francisella species. The phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and the protein-concatamer tree based on a concatenation of 28 protein marker sequences both indicated that the strains clustered with 'Francisella salina' TX07-7308 and 'Francisella marina' E95-16, but formed a distinct lineage group among the other members of the genus Francisella. The DNA G+C contents of the four strains were determined to be 32.9, 32.7, 32.9 and 32.9 %, respectively (genome). On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic features, the strains are considered to represent a novel species of the genus Francisella, for which the name Francisella salimarina sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SYSU SYW-1T (=CGMCC 1.17031T=NBRC 113781T).

BACKGROUND: Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) have a high suicide risk. Some evidence suggests that uric acid (UA) may be involved in the pathophysiology of MDD. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether serum UA levels were associated with suicide risk in MDD patients. METHODS: One hundred four female patients with MDD (52 patients with suicide risk and 52 patients without suicide risk) and 52 healthy individuals were included in this study. The suicide risk was evaluated by Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.). Fasting serum levels of UA, as well as glucose, lipid and renal function indicators were measured. RESULTS: Serum UA levels in MDD patients with suicide risk (245.01 ± 55.44 µmol/L) were significantly lower than those in MDD patients without suicide risk (274.17 ± 72.65 µmol/L) (p = 0.017) and healthy controls (271.42 ± 55.25 µmol/L) (p = 0.030). There was no difference in serum UA levels between the MDD patients without suicide risk and healthy controls (p = 0.821). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed a significant relationship between suicide risk and decreased serum UA levels (OR = 0.989, p = 0.010) in MDD patients. CONCLUSION: Decreased serum UA levels were associated with suicide risk in MDD patients. Purinergic system dysfunction may be involved in the neurobiological basis of suicide risk in these patients.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have shown that bipolar patients have increased serum uric acid levels. High serum uric acid levels could play a role contributing to high prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is known to increase the risk of developing a number of life threatening diseases including coronary heart disease, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. This study investigated the association between hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome and its components in individuals suffering from bipolar disorders. METHODS: This study recruited 318 inpatients suffering from bipolar disorders from Beijing Hui-Long-Guan Hospital in China and 160 healthy subjects from the same region as the controls. We used National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III Adapted criteria (NCEP ATP-III A) for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. Hyperuricemia was determined as serum uric acid level above 420 µmol/L in men and 360 µmol/L in women (N Engl J Med 359(17):1811-1821, 2008). RESULTS: Among 318 bipolar patients, there was higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (42.5%) and hyperuricemia (27.7%) than healthy controls (21.9 and 11.9%). Bipolar patients with metabolic syndrome had increased prevalence of hyperuricemia (OR = 3.0, CI95 [1.7-5.4]). Hypertriglyceridemia and larger waist circumference (WC) were associated with hyperunicemia (OR = 1.8, CI95 [1.1-3.1], OR = 1.9, CI95 [1.1-3.4]). Hyperuricemia was associated with metabolic syndrome in bipolar patients (p < 0.001) and especially with hypertriglyceridemia (OR = 1.9, CI95 [1.1-3.1] and increased WC (OR = 2.1 [1.2-4.0]). Bipolar patients over 50 years of age and hyperuricemia were highly prone to develop metabolic syndrome (OR = 14.0, CI95 [5.0-39.0]). CONCLUSIONS: Hyperuricemia was highly associated with development of metabolic disorder particularly for aged patients suffering from bipolar disorders. Early prevention of hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome may lead better life for bipolar patients when they get older.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous studies have demonstrated that neutrophil/HDL ratio (NHR), lymphocyte/HDL ratio (LHR), monocyte/HDL (MHR) ratio, platelet/HDL ratio (PHR), neutrophil/ALB ratio (NAR) and platelet/ALB ratio (PAR) can serve as systemic inflammation and oxidative stress markers in a variety of diseases. However, few studies have estimated the associations of these markers with unipolar depression (UD) and bipolar depression (BD), as well as psychotic symptoms in UD and BD. METHODS: 6297 UD patients, 1828 BD patients and 7630 healthy subjects were recruited. The differences in these indicators among different groups were compared, and the influencing factors for the occurrence of UD or BD and psychotic symptoms were analyzed. RESULTS: These ratios displayed unique variation patterns across different diagnostic groups. BD group exhibited higher NHR, LHR, MHR, NAR and lower PAR than UD and HC groups, UD group showed higher MHR than HC group. The psychotic UD group had higher NHR, LHR, MHR and NAR than non-psychotic UD group. Higher LHR, MHR, NAR and lower PAR were risk factors in BD when compared to UD group. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated differences in inflammation and oxidative stress profile between UD and BD patients, as well as between subjects with or without psychotic symptom exist, highlighting the role of inflammation and oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of UD and BD.

Transition bimetallic sulphides have emerged as important electrode materials for supercapacitors owing to their low toxicity, environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, multiple oxidation states, high natural abundance, flexible structure, and high theoretical specific capacitance. Herein, a porous nanosheet-nanosphere@nanosheet FeNi2-LDH@FeNi2S4 (FNLDH@FNS) core-shell heterostructure was directly prepared on nickel foam (NF) via a two-step hydrothermal method. The prepared electrode material exhibits an outstanding electrochemical performance. The specific capacity (Cs) values are 806 and 450 C g-1 at current density (Dc) values of 1 and 6 A g-1, respectively, revealing a satisfactory magnification performance. In addition, the FNLDH@FNS electrode exhibits a long cycle life with an supercapacitor (SC) retention rate of 92.3% after 5000 cycles at a Dc of 6 A g-1. The FNLDH@FNS//activated carbon (AC) asymmetric SC assembled with FNLDH@FNS (positive electrode) and activated carbon (AC, negative electrode) displays an energy density (Ed) of 36.67 Wh kg-1 and a power density (Pd) of 775.17 W kg-1.

tert-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a novel synthetic antioxidant with a higher safety profile and antioxidant effect that is more excellent than other synthetic antioxidants and is internationally recognized as one of the best food antioxidants. However, its excessive use in food can have unfavorable effects on the human body. Thus, it is critical to establish a rapid method for the detection of TBHQ in food samples. In this study, a cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) was fabricated by a one-pot hydrothermal method and embedded in multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to construct an economical and sensitive electrochemical sensor for TBHQ. The results showed that this sensor possessed a wide linear range (0.004-20 µM and 20-300 µM), a low limit of detection (LOD = 2.5 nM, S/N = 3) as well as an ultra-high sensitivity (43.19 µA µM-1 cm-2). Moreover, the sensor also has superior selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility and anti-interference ability and can be successfully applied for the detection of TBHQ in samples of instant noodles and potato chips.

Haemophilus seminalis is a newly proposed species that is phylogenetically related to Haemophilus haemolyticus. The distribution of H. seminalis in the human population, its genomic diversity, and its pathogenic potential are still unclear. This study reports the finding of our comparative genomic analyses of four newly isolated Haemophilus strains (SZY H8, SZY H35, SZY H36, and SZY H68) from human sputum specimens (Guangzhou, China) along with the publicly available genomes of other phylogenetically related Haemophilus species. Based on pairwise comparisons of the 16S rRNA gene sequences, the four isolates showed <98.65% sequence identity to the type strains of all known Haemophilus species but were identified as belonging to H. seminalis, based on comparable phenotypic and genotypic features. Additionally, the four isolates showed high genome-genome relatedness indices (>95% ANI values) with 17 strains that were previously identified as either "Haemophilus intermedius" or hemin (X-factor)-independent H. haemolyticus and therefore required a more detailed classification study. Phylogenetically, these isolates, along with the two previously described H. seminalis isolates (a total of 23 isolates), shared a highly homologous lineage that is distinct from the clades of the main H. haemolyticus and Haemophilus influenzae strains. These isolates present an open pangenome with multiple virulence genes. Notably, all 23 isolates have a functional heme biosynthesis pathway that is similar to that of Haemophilus parainfluenzae. The phenotype of hemin (X-factor) independence and the analysis of the ispD, pepG, and moeA genes can be used to distinguish these isolates from H. haemolyticus and H. influenzae. Based on the above findings, we propose a reclassification for all "H. intermedius" and two H. haemolyticus isolates belonging to H. seminalis with an emended description of H. seminalis. This study provides a more accurate identification of Haemophilus isolates for use in the clinical laboratory and a better understanding of the clinical significance and genetic diversity in human environments. IMPORTANCE As a versatile opportunistic pathogen, the accurate identification of Haemophilus species is a challenge in clinical practice. In this study, we characterized the phenotypic and genotypic features of four H. seminalis strains that were isolated from human sputum specimens and propose the "H. intermedius" and hemin (X-factor)-independent H. haemolyticus isolates as belonging to H. seminalis. The prediction of virulence-related genes indicates that H. seminalis isolates carry several virulence genes that are likely to play an important role in its pathogenicity. In addition, we depict that the genes ispD, pepG, and moeA can be used as biomarkers for distinguishing H. seminalis from H. haemolyticus and H. influenzae. Our findings provide some insights into the identification, epidemiology, genetic diversity, pathogenic potential, and antimicrobial resistance of the newly proposed H. seminalis.

OBJECTIVE: There is substantial evidence to support that the alterations in the immune-inflammation system play a crucial role in the pathogenic mechanism of affective disorders. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) have been recently investigated as simple, rapid, and inexpensive inflammation markers. The purpose of the research is to use large-scale clinical data to study the difference of the inflammation ratios in first-episode MDD, recurrent MDD, BD depressive episodes and manic episode. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was applied to retrospectively analyse the data that were extracted from electronic health records. A total of 16,174 Chinese affective disorder patients were enrolled in this study, and 6681 healthy subjects served as controls. The differences in the NLR, MLR, PLR and whole blood count data among different groups were compared, and the contributing factors for the occurrence of MDD and BD were analysed. RESULTS: First-episode and recurrent MDD patients exhibited significantly elevated NLRs and MLRs compared to healthy controls. Compared with the MDD patients, the BD patients showed higher NLRs and MLRs and lower PLRs. Further analysis showed that the BD manic episode patients had significantly elevated NLRs and MLRs compared to patients with BD depressive episodes or MDD. MLR was a risk factor for the occurrence of MDD and that the NLR and MLR were risk factors for the occurrence of BD. CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights the role of systemic inflammation in the pathophysiology of MDD and BD, particularly during manic BD episodes.

Corynebacterium, particularly Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii, has been increasingly recognized as an important pathogen causing mastitis. However, no clear taxonomic, microbiological, or clinical identification for C. kroppenstedtii-related Corynebacterium species is recognized. During the investigation of isolates cultured from female patients with mastitis, 27 lipophilic C. kroppenstedtii-like isolates were obtained from clinical breast specimens from 2017 to 2019 in Guangzhou, China. These isolates were identified by phenotypic characterization, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA, rpoB, and fusA genes, and whole-genome sequencing methods. By phylogenetic analyses, two major clusters were identified that were closely related to C. kroppenstedtii DSM 44385T. Comparative genome analyses suggested that these isolates formed two distinct genospecies within the genus Corynebacterium. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values for the two genospecies were 45.5 to 47.8% between them and 47.4 to 47.7% and 49.9% to C. kroppenstedtii DSM 44385T, respectively. Based on these results, it can be concluded that these isolates need to be recognized as two new species of the genus Corynebacterium, for which we proposed the names Corynebacterium parakroppenstedtii sp. nov. and Corynebacterium pseudokroppenstedtii sp. nov. The type strain for the novel species Corynebacterium parakroppenstedtii is MC-26T (NBRC 115146T; CCTCC AB 2020210T), and that for Corynebacterium pseudokroppenstedtii is MC-17XT (NBRC 115143T; CCTCC AB 2020199T). IMPORTANCE In this study, we characterized two novel species that were closely related to but hard to distinguish from C. kroppenstedtii by routine identification methods used in clinical laboratories. Since all 27 C. kroppenstedtii-like isolates were obtained from breast specimens of female patients with mastitis, they may be potential pathogens causing mastitis. We hope to perform further epidemiological investigation of these strains and explore their role in mastitis.

Background: The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), system inflammation response index (SIRI), neutrophil/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio (NHR), lymphocyte/HDL ratio (LHR), monocyte/HDL ratio (MHR), and platelet/HDL ratio (PHR) have been recently investigated as new markers for inflammation. The purpose of this research is to use large-scale clinical data to discuss and compare the predictive ability of the SII, SIRI, NHR, LHR, MHR, and PHR in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD), to investigate potential biomarkers. Materials and methods: In this retrospective, naturalistic, cross-sectional study, we collected the hematological parameter data of 13,329 patients with SCZ, 4,061 patients with BD manic episodes (BD-M), and 1,944 patients with BD depressive episodes (BD-D), and 5,810 healthy subjects served as the healthy control (HC) group. The differences in the SII, SIRI, NHR, LHR, MHR, and PHR were analyzed, and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the diagnostic potential of these parameters. Results: Compared with the HC group, the values of the SII, SIRI, NHR, LHR, MHR, and PHR and the levels of neutrophils, monocytes, and triglycerides (TG) were higher in SCZ and BD groups, and levels of platelets, cholesterol (CHO), HDL, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and apoprotein B (Apo B) were lower in SCZ and BD groups. Compared to the BD group, the values of the SIRI, lymphocytes, monocytes, and HDL were lower and the values of the SII, NHR, PHR, and platelet were higher in the SCZ group. In contrast to the BD-D group, the values of the SII; SIRI; NHR; and MHR; and levels of neutrophils, monocytes, and platelets were higher in the BD-M group, and the levels of CHO, TG, LDL, and Apo B were lower in the BD-M group. The MHR and NHR were predictors for differentiating the SCZ group from the HC group; the SIRI, NHR, and MHR were predictors for differentiating the BD-M group from the HC group; and the MHR was a predictor for differentiating the BD-D group from the HC group. The combination model of the indicators improved diagnostic effectiveness. Conclusion: Our study highlights the role of systemic inflammation in the pathophysiology of SCZ, BD-M, and BD-D, the association between inflammation and lipid metabolism, and these inflammation and lipid metabolism indicators showed different variation patterns in SCZ, BD-D, and BD-M.

Purpose: Nightmare is common and is also independently implicated in suicide risk among the adolescent population. Adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) are at an increased risk of suicide. Therefore, comorbid nightmares may amplify suicide risk among this clinical population. This study aimed to explore the effects of nightmares on suicide risk among adolescents with MDD. Patients and Methods: Subjects were 499 outpatients aged 12-18 in four large psychiatric hospitals clinic of China, from January 1 to October 31, 2021. Simultaneously, we matched 499 healthy controls according to gender and age. All participants underwent affective state (depressive and anxiety symptoms) and sleep variable (nightmare frequency/distress, insomnia symptoms, and daytime sleepiness) evaluation as well as MDD diagnoses and determination of suicide risk by a fully structured diagnostic clinical interview. Results: Adolescents with MDD reported a higher incidence of frequent nightmares (at least one night per week) and level of nightmare distress than healthy controls (22.0% vs 6.1%; 28.85 ± 11.92 vs 17.30 ± 5.61). Over half of the patients with suicide risk (51.6%) experienced frequent nightmares compared with approximately one-third of those at a risk for suicide (30.7%). Patients with suicide risk scored scientifically higher on sleep variables, depressive and anxiety symptoms than those without the risk. Further logistic regression analysis indicated that female gender, junior grade, recurrent depressive episode, severe nightmare distress and severe depressive symptoms were independently and significantly associated with suicide risk. Conclusion: Our study provided evidence that adolescents with MDD experienced a higher prevalence of frequent nightmares and suffered more nightmare distress. Nightmare distress is an independent risk factor for suicide risk.

Increasing attention has been paid to air pollution control (APC) residues in China recently due to the rising proportion of waste incineration and the hazardous characteristics of the residues, among which heavy metal leaching toxicity plays an important role. Leaching behavior and potential risk of Pb and Zn in the APC residues from a Shanghai municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator was studied, based on the leaching tests under different conditions and theoretical calculation using a geochemical thermodynamic equilibrium model MINTEQA2. Results showed that, extractant species and liquid to solid (L/S) ratio predominantly controlled the leaching toxicity of Pb and Zn, while ionic strength, vibration method and leaching time had less effect on the metals release. Leachate/final pH determined the metal leaching behavior, which changed the speciation of heavy metals in the extraction system. The equilibrium aqueous speciation, precipitation-dissolution of Pb and Zn was investigated according to the model computation, which was well in agreement with the experimental results.
