RESUMEN

Isomers close to doubly magic _{28}^{78}Ni_{50} provide essential information on the shell evolution and shape coexistence near the Z=28 and N=50 double shell closure. We report the excitation energy measurement of the 1/2^{+} isomer in _{30}^{79}Zn_{49} through independent high-precision mass measurements with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap and with the ISOLTRAP multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer. We unambiguously place the 1/2^{+} isomer at 942(10) keV, slightly below the 5/2^{+} state at 983(3) keV. With the use of state-of-the-art shell-model diagonalizations, complemented with discrete nonorthogonal shell-model calculations which are used here for the first time to interpret shape coexistence, we find low-lying deformed intruder states, similar to other N=49 isotones. The 1/2^{+} isomer is interpreted as the bandhead of a low-lying deformed structure akin to a predicted low-lying deformed band in ^{80}Zn, and points to shape coexistence in ^{79,80}Zn similar to the one observed in ^{78}Ni. The results make a strong case for confirming the claim of shape coexistence in this key region of the nuclear chart.

RESUMEN

The Fourier-transform limit achieved by a linear spectral phase is the typical optimum by the generation of ultrashort light pulses. It provides the highest possible intensity, however, not the shortest full width at half maximum of the pulse duration, which is relevant for many experiments. The approach for achieving shorter pulses than the original Fourier limit is termed temporal superresolution. We demonstrate this approach by shaping the spectral phase of light from an optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier and generate sub-Fourier limited pulses. We also realize it in a simpler way by controlling only the amplitude of the spectrum, producing a shorter Fourier-limited duration. Furthermore, we apply this technique to an optical parametric synthesizer and generate multi-TW sub-4-fs light pulses. This light source is a promising tool for generating intense and isolated attosecond light and electron pulses.

RESUMEN

Inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB) comprises rare disorders that manifest with fragility and blistering of the skin and mucous membranes, with variable clinical severity. Management of EB is challenging due to disease rarity and complexity, the wide range of extracutaneous manifestations and a profound impact on daily life for the patient and family members. Although reference centres providing multidisciplinary care for EB exist in each European country, it is common for healthcare professionals that are not specialized in this rare disorder to treat EB patients. Here, experts of the European Reference Network for Rare and Undiagnosed Skin Diseases (ERN-Skin, https://ern-skin.eu) propose practical recommendations for the diagnosis and management of the commonest clinical issues, skin blisters and wounds, oral manifestations, pain and itch.

RESUMEN

Temporal-intensity contrast is crucial in intense laser-matter interaction to circumvent the undesirable expansion of steep high-density plasma prior to the interaction with the main pulse. Nonlinear elliptical polarization rotation in an argon filled hollow-core fiber is used here for cleaning pedestals/satellite pulses of a chirped-pulse-amplifier based Ti:Sapphire laser. This source provides ∼35 µJ energy and sub-4-fs duration, and the process has >50% internal efficiency, more than the most commonly used pulse cleaning methods. Further, the contrast is improved by 3 orders of magnitude when measured after amplifying the pulses to 16 TW using non-collinear optical parametric chirped pulse amplification with a prospect to even further enhancement.

RESUMEN

Respiratory rate is an important risk marker and enables early detection of critically ill and vulnerable patients in clinical routine. The aim of this pilot study with 31 patients (COPD severity levels II - IV) was to determine the mean nocturnal respiratory rate based on breath sound recordings and to investigate the dependence of respiratory rate on COPD severity level and smoker status. The mean respiratory rate of the total collective was 19/min. For the COPD-GOLD severity levels, no significant differences in mean respiratory rate could be observed. When nicotine consumption is taken into account, active smokers showed a significantly higher mean respiratory rate of 20.84 ±â€Š4.45/min compared to non-smokers with 17.41 ±â€Š3.14/min (p < 0.05). In addition, active smokers in the study were significantly more frequent among patients with night-time wheezing (60 % vs. 23.8 %). This might suggest that smokers need to perform increased breathing work with increased breathing rate to compensate for oxygen deficiency in bronchial obstruction. The results of the present study show that with the acoustic recording of breath sounds, a reliable representation and calculation of the breath frequency is possible.

RESUMEN

We found a positive relationship between bone density in Nigerian children with and without rickets and that of their mothers. After treatment, children with rickets had greater bone density than children without rickets, indicating that children genetically programmed to have greater bone density may have a higher risk of rickets. INTRODUCTION: To determine the relationship between bone density in children with and without rickets and that of their mothers METHODS: Using an unmatched case-control design, forearm areal bone mineral density (aBMD) was measured in 52 and 135 Nigerian children with and without rickets and their mothers, respectively. We performed multivariate linear regression analyses to assess the relationship between maternal and child aBMD Z-scores. RESULTS: Forearm aBMD Z-scores in children were associated with maternal aBMD Z-scores at metaphyseal (effect estimate 0.23; 95% CI 0.08 to 0.37) and diaphyseal (effect estimate 0.16; 0.01 to 0.30) sites, after adjustment for rickets in the child, child's age and sex, height-for-age Z-score, and weight-for-age Z-score. In the adjusted model, rickets was inversely associated with child's aBMD Z-score at the diaphyseal site only (- 0.45, - 0.65 to - 0.24). The positive relationship between maternal and child aBMD Z-scores was marginally greater in children with rickets (slope 0.56, r = 0.47) than without rickets (slope 0.19, r = 0.20) at the diaphyseal site only (P = 0.06 for interaction) but not at the metaphyseal site (slopes 0.35 and 0.30, respectively, P = 0.48). After treatment with calcium for 6 months, metaphyseal aBMD Z-scores were greater in children with treated rickets (effect estimate 0.26; 95% CI 0.02 to 0.49) than in those without rickets. CONCLUSION: In Nigerian children with and without rickets, forearm aBMD Z-scores were positively associated with maternal aBMD Z-scores. Active rickets in the child marginally modified the relationship at the diaphyseal site only. After treatment, children with rickets had greater metaphyseal aBMD Z-scores than children without rickets.

RESUMEN

Females demonstrate less robust Frank-Starling mechanism with respect to cardiac preload than males at rest. We asked whether this phenomenon would also affect cardiac performance during exercise. We hypothesized that stroke volume (SV) response to exercise would be more limited in deconditioned females such that cardiac output would be mainly rate dependent, compared with males. We conducted a chart audit of clinical exercise tests performed by adolescents with chronic fatigue. Oxygen uptake (V˙O2) was measured breath-by-breath at rest and during cycle ergometry, while cardiac output was measured by acetylene rebreathing at rest plus 2-3 subthreshold workloads. SV response was analyzed in two ways: after normalization for body surface area (SV index, SVI) and as percentage change from resting values. Among 304 adolescents (78% females) with chronic fatigue, 189 (80%) of 236 females and 52 (76%) of 68 males were deconditioned (peakV˙O2 <90% predicted). Heart rate trajectory during exercise was steeper for unfit than fit females, 70 vs 61 beat·min-1 per L·min-1 V˙O2, (P=.003); but not for males, 47 vs 42 beat·min-1 per L·min-1 V˙O2 (P=.23). The highest measured SVI did not differ between unfit vs fit females (42.8 vs 41.5 mL·m-2 , P=.39) while fit males showed larger SV during exercise than their unfit peers (highest SVI 55.9 vs 48.0 mL·m-2 , P=.014). Both qualitative and quantitative sex differences exist in SV responses to exercise among chronically fatigued adolescents, suggesting volume loading may be more efficacious in girls.

RESUMEN

We report an x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy method that exploits the recent development of the two-pulse mode at the Linac Coherent Light Source. By using coherent resonant x-ray magnetic scattering, we studied spontaneous fluctuations on nanosecond time scales in thin films of multilayered Fe/Gd that exhibit ordered stripe and Skyrmion lattice phases. The correlation time of the fluctuations was found to differ between the Skyrmion phase and near the stripe-Skyrmion boundary. This technique will enable a significant new area of research on the study of equilibrium fluctuations in condensed matter.

RESUMEN

The mechanical performance of materials at oil/water interfaces after consumption is a key factor affecting hydrophobic drug release. In this study, we methylated the surface of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) by mercerization and dimethyl sulfate exposure to produce thermosensitive biopolymers. These methylated NCC (metNCC) were used to investigate interfacial thermogelation at air/water and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT)/water interfaces at body temperature. In contrast to bulk fluid dynamics, elastic layers were formed at room temperature, and elasticity increased significantly at body temperature, which was measured by interfacial shear and dilatational rheology in situ. This unique phenomenon depends on solvent quality, temperature, and polymer concentration at interfaces. Thus, by adjusting the degree of hydrophobicity of metNCC, the interfacial elasticity and thermogelation of the interfaces could be varied. In general, these new materials (metNCC) formed more brittle interfacial layers compared to commercial methylcellulose (MC A15). Thermogelation of methylcellulose promotes attractive intermolecular forces, which were reflected in a change in self-assembly of metNCC at the interface. As a consequence, layer thickness and density increased as a function of temperature. These effects were measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of the displaced interface and confirmed by neutron reflection. The substantial structural and mechanical change of methylcellulose interfaces at body temperature represents a controllable encapsulation parameter allowing optimization of lipid-based drug formulations.

RESUMEN

Locomotion in fluids at the nanoscale is dominated by viscous drag. One efficient propulsion scheme is to use a weak rotating magnetic field that drives a chiral object. From bacterial flagella to artificial drills, the corkscrew is a universally useful chiral shape for propulsion in viscous environments. Externally powered magnetic micro- and nanomotors have been recently developed that allow for precise fuel-free propulsion in complex media. Here, we combine analytical and numerical theory with experiments on nanostructured screw-propellers to show that the optimal length is surprisingly short-only about one helical turn, which is shorter than most of the structures in use to date. The results have important implications for the design of artificial actuated nano- and micropropellers and can dramatically reduce fabrication times, while ensuring optimal performance.

RESUMEN

The degree of phosphorus saturation (DPS) of agricultural soils is studied worldwide for risk assessment of phosphorus (P) losses. In previous studies, DPS could be reliably estimated from water-soluble P (WSP) for European and Brazilian soils. In the present study, we correlated measured WSP and Mehlich-1 P (M1P) from soils of Minas Gerais (MG) and Pernambuco (PE) (R(2) = 0.94, n = 59) to create a DPS map from monitoring data. The resulting DPS map showed high spatial variability and low values of DPS (54 ± 22%, mean and standard deviation; n = 1,827). Measured soil DPS values amounted to 63 ± 14% and resulted in relatively low dissolved P concentrations measured in a surface runoff study in MG. However, fertilizer grains on the soil surface led to high WSP values (>30 mg/kg) indicating high risks of dissolved P losses. We suppose that small Oxisol particles with Fe and Al hydroxides sorbed most of the dissolved fertilizer P in runoff so that P was mainly exported in particulate form. In soils with lower contents of P sorption and binding partners, e.g. Entisols in PE, this effect may be less dominant. Consequently, superficial fertilizer effects have to be considered in addition to DPS in risk assessment of P losses from agricultural areas in Brazil.

RESUMEN

The pathogenesis of executive dysfunction in geriatric depression remains uncertain although causal bidirectional relationships with depression have been discussed. Previous studies have described a potential link with 'vascular depression'. In this study, we investigate the influence of vascular risk factors and magnetic resonance imaging markers of structural brain ageing, such as increasing deep white matter hyperintensities (DWMH), on executive function in an age-homogeneous population-based study cohort. A total of 606 participants of identical age (75.8 years; standard deviation 0.45 years) took part in the baseline investigation of the Vienna Transdanube Ageing (VITA) study. Each participant underwent a full psychometric examination with standardised neuroimaging and clinical chemistry investigations. Participants were re-examined with the same protocol after exactly 30 and 60 months. Data refer to the individuals who completed the examination at baseline. In the ordinal logistic regression, fewer years of education (P < 0.0001), Trail Making Test-A (P < 0.0001), high homocysteine (P = 0.001), and depression (P < 0.0001) were significantly associated with Trail Making Test-B (TMT-B) values. A significant influence of other vascular risk factors, such as lipids, diabetes, and smoking, on executive dysfunction was not observed. A comparison of both lacunes and DWMH with respect to the TMT-B results showed no significant correlation. Our data do not support the notion that vascular pathogenesis might underlie executive dysfunction.

RESUMEN

We investigated the magnetization reversal of magnetic vortex structures in a two-dimensional lattice. The structures were formed by permalloy (Py) film deposition onto large arrays of self assembled spherical SiO(2)-particles with a diameter of 330 nm. We present the dependence of the nucleation and annihilation field of the vortex structures as a function of the Py layer thickness(aspect ratio) and temperature. By increasing the Py thickness up to 90 nm or alternatively by lowering the temperature the vortex structure becomes more stable as expected. However, the increase of the Py thickness results in the onset of strong exchange coupling between neighboring Py caps due to the emergence of Py bridges connecting them. In particular, we studied the influence of magnetic coupling locally by in-field scanning magne to-resistive microscopy and full-field magnetic soft x-ray microscopy, revealing a domain-like nucleation process of vortex states, which arises via domain wall propagation due to exchange coupling of the closely packed structures. By analyzing the rotation sense of the reversed areas, large connected domains are present with the same circulation sense. Furthermore, the lateral core displacements when an in-plane field is applied were investigated, revealing spatially enlarged vortex cores and a broader distribution with increasing Py layer thickness. In addition, the presence of some mixed states, vortices and c-states, is indicated for the array with the thickest Py layer.

RESUMEN

We describe a novel polarization interferometer which permits the determination of the refractive indices for circularly-polarized light. It is based on a Jamin-Lebedeff interferometer, modified with waveplates, and permits us to experimentally determine the refractive indices nL and nR of the respectively left- and right-circularly polarized modes in a cholesteric liquid crystal. Whereas optical rotation measurements only determine the circular birefringence, i.e. the difference (nL - nR), the interferometer also permits the determination of their absolute values. We report refractive indices of a cholesteric liquid crystal in the region of selective (Bragg) reflection as a function of temperature.

RESUMEN

Human lipid digestion begins at the interface of oil and water by interfacial adsorption of lipases. Tailoring the available surface area for lipase activity can lead to specific lipid sensing in the body, thus, tailored satiety hormone release. In this study we present biopolymer layers at the MCT-oil/water interface with different stabilities under human gastric environment (37 °C, pH 2, pepsin). Physicochemical changes and enzymatic degradation of interfacial layers were monitored online by interfacial shear rheology. We show the weakening of ß-lactoglobulin (ß-lg) layers at body temperature and acidification and their hydrolysis by pepsin. If sufficient concentrations of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) are given to an existing ß-lg layer, this weakening is buffered and the proteolysis delayed. A synergistic, composite layer is formed by adding methylated NCC to the ß-lg layer. This layer thermogels at body temperature and resists hydrolysis by pepsin. Coexistence of these two emulsifiers at the air/water interface is evidenced by neutron reflectometry measurements, where morphological information are extracted. The utilized layers and their analysis provide knowledge of physicochemical changes during in vitro digestion of interfaces, which promote functional food formulations.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The bomb attacks in Madrid (2004) and London (2005) have increased awareness that terrorist attacks are also a real threat in Germany. Hospitals and health care providers should be prepared. METHODS: We distributed an anonymous online questionnaire to physicians working in trauma centers of different categories. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. RESULTS: The questionnaire was returned by 1,204 of 7,700 physicians. This reflects a response rate of 15.6%. Of the participants, 53.3% answered that their hospital had a disaster control plan and that they knew the content; 33.9% reported that their hospital had participated in a disaster training scenario. CONCLUSION: As only 53.3% of physicians in hospitals know their disaster control plan and only 33.9% of hospitals have participated in a disaster training scenario we conclude that more action is needed to increase awareness of the problem. Furthermore standardized training programs are needed to disseminate knowledge and skills in order to enable health care providers to face the occurrence of terroristic attacks in Germany.

RESUMEN

The development of high intensity petawatt lasers has created new possibilities for ion acceleration and nuclear fusion using solid targets. In such laser-matter interaction, multiple ion species are accelerated with broad spectra up to hundreds of MeV. To measure ion yields and for species identification, CR-39 solid-state nuclear track detectors are frequently used. However, these detectors are limited in their applicability for multi-ion spectra differentiation as standard image recognition algorithms can lead to a misinterpretation of data, there is no unique relation between track diameter and particle energy, and there are overlapping pit diameter relationships for multiple particle species. In this report, we address these issues by first developing an algorithm to overcome user bias during image processing. Second, we use calibration of the detector response for protons, carbon and helium ions (alpha particles) from 0.1 to above 10 MeV and measurements of statistical energy loss fluctuations in a forward-fitting procedure utilizing multiple, differently filtered CR-39, altogether enabling high-sensitivity, multi-species particle spectroscopy. To validate this capability, we show that inferred CR-39 spectra match Thomson parabola ion spectrometer data from the same experiment. Filtered CR-39 spectrometers were used to detect, within a background of ~ 2 × 1011 sr-1 J-1 protons and carbons, (1.3 ± 0.7) × 108 sr-1 J-1 alpha particles from laser-driven proton-boron fusion reactions.

RESUMEN

Using Fresnel zone plates made with our robust nanofabrication processes, we have successfully achieved 10 nm spatial resolution with soft x-ray microscopy. The result, obtained with both a conventional full-field and scanning soft x-ray microscope, marks a significant step forward in extending the microscopy to truly nanoscale studies.

RESUMEN

The role of the CLSTN2 (rs6439886) and KIBRA (rs17070145) SNPs in cognitive impairment was analysed in a 75-76 years old group. Various memory assessment tests were carried out on individuals at baseline and during follow-up investigations, and biallelic genotyping was performed. No influence of the allele status of either SNPs was observed on any memory test. No increased risk of any type of late development, and cognitive impairment was associated with rs6439886 or rs17070145.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Clinical subtypes of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) were assigned as potential prodromes to various types of dementia. Amnestic MCI (aMCI) is said to have a high likelihood of progressing to Alzheimer's dementia (AD) and non-amnestic MCI (naMCI) subtypes are assumed to have a higher likelihood of progressing to non-AD dementia. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic accuracy of aMCI and naMCI for the development of AD, vascular dementia (VaD), and mixed dementia. METHODS: In this longitudinal study, 487 subjects without dementia (cognitively healthy: n = 387; MCI cases: n = 115) aged 75 years at baseline, who participated in a population-based cohort study (Vienna Transdanube Aging study), were available for analysis. The observation period was 90 months. The diagnoses of the clinical MCI subtypes were made according to common criteria. The outcome (AD, VaD, mixed dementia) was described for both MCI subtypes. Diagnostic values of aMCI and naMCI according to incident AD, VaD, and mixed dementia were determined. RESULTS: AD was the most common type of dementia following both MCI subtypes. Participants with aMCI were more likely to progress to AD than participants with naMCI. The proportion of incident VaD and mixed dementia did not differ concerning the MCI subtypes. The positive predictive value for both MCI subtypes was low (range: 1%-46%), whereas the negative predictive value was high (range: 86%-99%). CONCLUSIONS: The increased risk of clinical MCI subtypes for a particular type of dementia could only be confirmed for aMCI and incident AD.
