RESUMEN

Cold gas spray (CGS) technology has allowed the development of biofunctional coatings composed of 45S5 and polyetheretherketone (PEEK). The combination of a bioactive glass material embedded in a polymeric matrix makes this composite an interesting material for orthopedic applications since this composite meets the biomechanical and biological requirements of an implant. In the present study, blends of bioactive glass 45S5 and PEEK powder with different granulometry and 45S5/PEEK ratio have been prepared. These mixtures of powders have been deposited onto PEEK substrates by CGS with the goal of incorporating a bioactive additive to the biocompatible polymer, which can improve the bone-implant interaction of PEEK. The deposition efficiency (DE) of the coatings has been evaluated, and from the results obtained, it was possible to conclude that DE is significantly affected by the granulometry and by the 45S5/PEEK ratio of the blends. By scanning electron microscopy (SEM) inspection, it was observed that the use of blends with high 45S5/PEEK ratio lead to the deposition of coatings with high content of 45S5. Finally, the friction behavior of the coatings was analyzed performing ball-on-disk tests and these experiments showed that the presence of glass particles has a beneficial role in the wear resistance.

Understanding the mechanisms and patterns involved in population recoveries is challenging and important in shaping conservation strategies. We used a recovering rear-edge population of brown bears at their southernmost European range in Greece as a case study (2007-2010) to explore the recovery genetics at a species' distribution edge. We used 17 microsatellite and a mitochondrial markers to evaluate genetic structure, estimate effective population size and genetic diversity, and infer gene flow between the identified subpopulations. To understand the larger picture, we also compared the observed genetic diversity of each subpopulation with other brown bear populations in the region. The results indicate that the levels of genetic diversity for bears in western Greece are the lowest recorded in southeastern Europe, but still higher than those of other genetically depauperate bear populations. Apart from a complete separation of bear populations in eastern and western Greece, our results also indicate a considerable genetic sub-structuring in the West. As bear populations in Greece are now recovering, this structure is dissolving through a "recovery cascade" of asymmetric gene flow from South to North between neighboring subpopulations, mediated mainly by males. Our study outlines the importance of small, persisting populations, which can act as "stepping stones" that enable a rapid population expansion and recovery. This in turn makes their importance much greater than their numeric or genetic contribution to a species as a whole.

BACKGROUND: In children with egg protein allergy (EA), the probability of overcoming the allergy decreases with age, and the possibility of suffering severe adverse reactions as a consequence of dietetic transgressions results in worsened quality of life. One treatment option in such cases is oral immunotherapy (OIT) with foods. METHODS: We present a cohort of children with EA scheduled for OIT with pasteurized raw egg white, describing their clinical and allergic characteristics before the start of OIT. RESULTS: The median age was six years, and 93% of the patients also suffered other allergies (58% asthma and 38.6% allergy to more than two food groups). In the last year, 14.8% had suffered a severe reaction due to dietetic transgression with egg. The median IgE specific of egg white titer was 38.5kU/l. A double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge with cooked egg white was performed, and if the test proved positive, it was repeated with pasteurized raw egg white. The mean symptoms-provoking dose was 1.26g and 0.55g for cooked egg white and raw egg white, respectively. An IgE specific of ovomucoid titer of <2.045kU/l differentiated those patients that tolerated cooked egg white. CONCLUSIONS: OIT with egg is regarded as an option in patients with persistent egg allergy. In the previous challenge test, an IgE specific of ovomucoid titer of <2.045kU/l differentiates those patients that tolerate cooked egg white.

Three cats were presented for unusual collapsing episodes. Echocardiography revealed a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) phenotype in each cat. Continuous electrocardiographic monitoring showed that the clinical signs coincided with periods of severe ST-segment elevation in each cat. The first cat was treated with amlodipine and diltiazem but did not improve and was euthanized due to poor quality of life. Postmortem examination revealed cardiac lymphoma without obstructive coronary disease. The second cat was thought to have cardiac lymphoma, based on pericardial effusion cytology, and was euthanized before starting therapy. The third cat was diagnosed with HCM and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and was treated with atenolol and diltiazem. This treatment reduced the frequency of episodic clinical signs, but the cat subsequently developed congestive heart failure and was euthanized. This case series describes clinical signs associated with severe ST elevation in cats with an HCM phenotype, and their outcomes. Continuous electrocardiographic monitoring was necessary to detect transient ST elevation in each case.

Andean uplift played a key role in Neotropical bird diversification, yet past dispersal and genetic adaptation to high-altitude environments remain little understood. Here we use multilocus population genetics to study population history and historical demographic processes in the ruddy duck (Oxyura jamaicensis), a stiff-tailed diving duck comprising three subspecies distributed from Canada to Tierra del Fuego and inhabiting wetlands from sea level to 4500 m in the Andes. We sequenced the mitochondrial DNA, four autosomal introns and three haemoglobin genes (α(A), α(D), ß(A)) and used isolation-with-migration (IM) models to study gene flow between North America and South America, and between the tropical and southern Andes. Our analyses indicated that ruddy ducks dispersed first from North America to the tropical Andes, then from the tropical Andes to the southern Andes. While no nonsynonymous substitutions were found in either α globin gene, three amino acid substitutions were observed in the ß(A) globin. Based on phylogenetic reconstruction and power analysis, the first ß(A) substitution, found in all Andean individuals, was acquired when ruddy ducks dispersed from low altitude in North America to high altitude in the tropical Andes, whereas the two additional substitutions occurred more recently, when ruddy ducks dispersed from high altitude in the tropical Andes to low altitude in the southern Andes. This stepwise colonization pattern accompanied by polarized ß(A) globin amino acid replacements suggest that ruddy ducks first acclimatized or adapted to the Andean highlands and then again to the lowlands. In addition, ruddy ducks colonized the Andean highlands via a less common route as compared to other waterbird species that colonized the Andes northwards from the southern cone of South America.

BACKGROUND: Immediate hypersensitivity reactions (IHR) to iodinated contrast media (ICM) have traditionally been considered nonallergic; however, the increasingly frequent reporting of positive skin test and basophil activation test results suggests a specific allergic mechanism in some patients. Skin tests have been proposed as a useful tool for diagnosis, although their sensitivity and predictive values remain to be determined. The role of controlled challenge testing has not been assessed. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the role of controlled challenge testing in skin test-positive IHR to ICM. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated 106 patients with IHR to ICM by performing skin tests with the agent that caused the reaction. Patients with a positive result were selected. Skin tests were extended to a series of 8 ICMs; 5 patients underwent controlled challenge test with an alternative skin test-negative ICM; a further 2 patients underwent computed tomography with an alternative skin test-negative ICM. No premedication was administered. RESULTS: Intradermal test results were positive to the ICM that caused the reaction in 11 out of 106 patients (10.4%). Five of the 11 patients tolerated a controlled challenge test with an alternative skin test-negative ICM. The 2 patients who underwent computed tomography with an alternative skin test-negative ICM tolerated the medium. CONCLUSIONS: Skin tests are useful for the diagnostic workup in patients with an allergic IHR to ICM. Since ICM cannot be avoided in many patients because they are irreplaceable in some diagnostic or therapeutic techniques, an alternative safe ICM should be investigated for future procedures. We propose the use of controlled challenge tests based on skin test results to address this need in skin test-positive reactions in order to identify an alternative non-cross-reactive ICM.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Discrete upper septal thickening (DUST) is a phenotype of elderly people. The cardiac phenotype in senior cats has been incompletely described. We aimed to characterize the echocardiographic phenotype of senior cats, specifically to determine prevalence of DUST and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). ANIMALS: One hundred and forty-nine healthy, normotensive cats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study. Senior (≥9 years) and young (<6 years) cats were recruited from non-referral population. We defined DUST as an isolated basilar septal bulge, and HCM as left ventricular wall thickness ≥6 mm. An interventricular septum ratio (basal-to-mid septal thickness ratio) was calculated. We assessed for associations between clinical and echocardiographic variables and DUST. Data are presented as mean (±SD), median (range), or frequency (percentage). RESULTS: One-hundred and two senior and 47 young cats were enrolled. Aortoseptal angle (AoSA) was steeper in senior cats (137° (±14.5) vs. 145° (±12.3) in young cats, P=0.002). Eighteen cats had DUST (18/149, 12%), fourteen senior, and four young cats (P=0.4). Cats with DUST had steeper AoSA (125° (±8.3) vs. 142° (±13.7), P<0.0001) and higher interventricular septum ratio (1.4 (1.2-2.0) vs. 1.0 (0.7-1.8)). Univariable analysis showed decreased odds of DUST with greater AoSA (OR 0.9, P<0.0001), age was not associated with DUST. Twenty-nine senior cats had HCM (28.4%). DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of DUST was 12%. There was no association between age and DUST. Smaller/steeper AoSA was the main factor associated with DUST. There was a high prevalence of HCM in this senior population.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Thin and hypokinetic myocardial segments (THyMS) represent adverse ventricular (LV) remodeling in human hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We describe the echocardiographic features and outcome in cats with THyMS, and in a subpopulation, the echocardiographic phenotype before LV wall thinning was detected (pre-THyMS). ANIMALS: Eighty client-owned cats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective multicenter study. Clinical records were searched for cats with THyMS, defined as LV segment(s) with end-diastolic wall thickness (LVWT) <3 mm and hypokinesis in the presence of ≥one LV segment(s) with LVWT >4 mm and normal wall motion. When available, echocardiograms pre-THyMS were assessed. Survival time was defined as time from first presentation with THyMS to death. RESULTS: Mean thickest LV wall segment (MaxLVWT) was 6.1 mm (95% CI 5.8-6.4 mm) and thinnest (MinLVWT) was 1.7 mm (95% CI 1.6-1.9 mm). The LV free wall was affected in 74%, apex in 13% and septum in 5%. Most cats (85%) presented with heart failure and/or arterial thromboembolism. Median circulating troponin I concentration was 1.4 ng/mL ([range 0.07-180 ng/mL]). Prior echocardiography results were available for 13/80 cats, a mean of 2.5 years pre-THyMS. In segments subsequently undergoing thinning, initial MaxLVWT measured 6.7 mm (95% CI 5.8-7.7 mm) vs. 1.9 mm (95% CI 1.5-2.4 mm) at last echocardiogram (P<0.0001). Survival data were available for 56/80 cats, median survival time after diagnosing THyMS was 153 days (95% CI 83-223 days). Cardiac histopathology in one cat revealed that THyMS was associated with severe transmural scarring. CONCLUSIONS: Cats with THyMS had advanced cardiomyopathy and a poor prognosis.

INTRODUCTION: Both paroxysmal high-grade second-degree and persistent third-degree atrioventricular block (AVB) are recognised in cats. Our aim was to document the presentation, echocardiographic data, comorbidities and outcome in affected cats from a single referral hospital, including those that underwent epicardial pacemaker implantation (EPI). ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 64 cats diagnosed with persistent third-degree or paroxysmal high-grade AVB, for which detailed patient history was available. Non-parametric testing, Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazard testing were performed. RESULTS: Atrioventricular block was persistent in 43 cats (67%) and paroxysmal in 21 (33%). Forty-seven cats (74%) were referred for cardiac complaints (e.g. collapse, arrhythmia, tachypnea), 6 (9%) had non-specific complaints and AVB was an incidental finding in 11 cats (17%). Median duration of clinical signs prior to presentation was 21 days (1-1138 days). Thirty-nine (63%) cats had echocardiographic abnormalities; 13 (20%) presented with congestive heart failure. Forty-five (70%) cats had one or more comorbidities. Fifteen cats underwent EPI with immediate resolution of signs in 12 cats. Following EPI, two and four cats experienced major and minor complications, respectively. Forty-seven cats died; median survival time was 799 days (all-cause mortality). Cardiac-related death occurred in 17 cats (36%); median survival in these cats was 132 days. Heart failure on presentation was the only independent risk factor for cardiac death (p=0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Outcome in cats with AVB was variable, although most had good medium- to long-term survival. Cardiac death occurred in a minority of cats. Pacemaker implantation was effective in relieving clinical signs.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior mitral valve leaflet (AMVL) elongation is a recognised feature of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). However, whether AMVL elongation precedes left ventricular hypertrophy in cats is currently unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the risk of developing an HCM phenotype in cats with an elongated AMVL. ANIMALS: FIFTY-FIVE APPARENTLY HEALTHY CATS WITH A NORMAL BASELINE ECHOCARDIOGRAM AND A FOLLOW-UP ECHOCARDIOGRAM AT >ONE YEAR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective longitudinal study. Cats at the baseline were grouped based on whether or not they developed an HCM phenotype at follow-up. AMVL length and left atrial and left ventricular dimensions were measured from two-dimensional images. RESULTS: The median follow-up period of the study population was 5.4 years (25th and 75th quartile, 2.7-6.7 years). During this time, 17 cats (30.9%) developed an HCM phenotype. At the baseline, cats that subsequently developed an HCM phenotype had greater AMVL length (9.4 mm [25th and 75th quartile, 9.0-10.6 mm] vs. 8.5 mm [25th and 75th quartile, 7.6-9.1 mm], P < 0.0001) and maximal left ventricular wall thickness (4.5 mm [25th and 75th quartile, 4.1-4.7 mm] vs. 4.0 mm [25th and 75th quartile, 3.7-4.6 mm], P = 0.007) than those that did not. Multiple logistic regression analysis confirmed that both baseline variables were independent predictors for development of an HCM phenotype. CONCLUSIONS: The AMVL length was greater in cats that subsequently developed left ventricular hypertrophy. Further studies investigating the clinical application of AMVL in the natural history of feline HCM are warranted.

UNLABELLED: Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is produced from the exhausts of vehicles and gas appliances and is known to pose certain health risks. In this study, we characterize the exposure to this substance during the first year of life, which is an important period of development. To this end, we used passive samplers to measure indoor and outdoor NO2 levels for 2 weeks in the homes of 352 children. To compensate for the fact that NO2 levels were measured only once in each home, a correction factor was calculated to assign each child an outdoor NO2 exposure value for the first year of life. The outdoor NO2 concentrations were 26.1 microg/m(3) while those measured indoors averaged 18.0 microg/m(3). A multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the main determinants of outdoor NO2 levels were the degree of urbanization and the frequency of vehicle traffic at the location of the residence while for indoor NO2 levels the principal determinants were the type of cooking range and water heater present in the home, the season of the year, and both the country of origin and educational level of the mother. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Exposure to NO2 has been related to respiratory and other health problems among children. Precise identification of the main sources of both indoor and outdoor NO2 should shed light on appropriate intervention periods and methods. Our results indicate that while population density and traffic-related variables are the main determinants of outdoor NO2 levels, the use of gas appliances have the greatest impact on indoor levels. Strategies should thus be developed to reduce such exposure, especially with regard to reducing emissions from vehicle traffic.

INTRODUCTION: Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) has not been well described in cats. The aim of this study was to describe the signalment, clinical findings, and outcome for cats with SVT versus cats with atrial fibrillation (AF). ANIMALS: Forty-four client owned cats are included in the study. 23 cats with SVT and 21 with AF. METHODS: This is a retrospective study. Clinical characteristics were compared between groups using a two-sample t-test or Mann-Whitney U test. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were generated to assess for impact of rhythm diagnosis, presence of ventricular arrhythmia, left atrial diameter, heart rate and congestive heart failure (CHF) status on cardiac death. Differences in survival between groups were compared using Mantel-Cox logrank comparison of Kaplan-Meier survival curves. RESULTS: Cats with supraventricular arrhythmias most commonly presented with respiratory distress (10 of 44 cats). Cats with AF had a slower median heart rate (220 [range: 180-260 beats per minute (bpm)] compared with cats with SVT (300 [range: 150-380] bpm, p < 0.001). All cats with AF had structural heart disease, whereas 4 cats with SVT had no structural abnormalities. Left atrial diameter was significantly larger in cats with AF (23.7 (16.2-40.1) mm compared with 19.1 (12.8-31.4) mm in SVT cats; p = 0.02). Median survival was 58 days (1-780) in cats with AF and 259 days (2-2295) in cats with SVT (p = 0.1). Cats with signs of CHF had a shorter survival time (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Most cats with AF or SVT have advanced structural heart disease. Some cats with SVT had structurally normal hearts, suggesting that SVT in cats is not always a consequence of atrial enlargement.

BACKGROUND: Nonimmediate allergic reactions (NIR) to aminopenicillin include several entities, the most common of which are urticaria-like and maculopapular exanthemas. AIMS OF THE STUDY: To evaluate a group of children who developed one or more episodes of skin reactions suggestive of NIR after aminopenicillin administration. METHODS: The inclusion criteria required negative immediate skin tests and absence of specific IgE antibodies to different penicillins. Intradermal and patch tests were carried out with delayed readings and, if negative, a drug-provocation test including a full therapeutic course of the drug was given. Two different groups were compared: A) children with positive skin testing or a positive drug-provocation test and B) children with negative skin testing and good tolerance after a drug-provocation test. RESULTS: Group A was composed of 20 patients. Positive intradermal/patch tests were found in one patient and in the remaining 19, a positive response to a drug-provocation test confirmed the diagnosis. Group B (the control group) consisted of 19 patients with similar symptoms after aminopenicillin intake but good tolerance. No differences in age, dose or number of previous treatments were observed between the groups. The clinical entities were also similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Reproducible nonimmediate skin reactions to aminopenicillins may occur in children in spite of negative skin testing. The value of this diagnostic procedure seems to be limited in this type of reaction, with drug-provocation tests (DPT) being a reasonable and safe alternative if the diagnosis has to be confirmed.

Muscle injuries are frequent in the workplace. They are produced by sudden direct or indirect trauma that involves a rupture of the fibres, causing bruising. Currently, there is no single protocol-based model of treatment. We present the case of a patient diagnosed with complete muscular rupture of the plantaris muscle by an indirect traumatic mechanism (abrupt muscular elongation), with an associated large-volume hematoma. Clinical study consisted of ultrasound, magnetic resonance (MR), pain assessment (VAS) at the beginning and at the end of the treatment (3 weeks), as well as duration of occupational disability. The patient underwent extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) according to the protocol. At the end of treatment, the hematoma was resolved and there were no complications. ESWT could be a complementary therapeutic alternative to conventional treatment in this entity. However, there is a need for further, randomised controlled studies including a larger number of patients.

A 2-year, 4-month-old neutered female Labrador retriever was brought for evaluation of right-sided congestive heart failure. Echocardiographic examination revealed tricuspid valve dysplasia with only two small orifices in the valve resulting in severe tricuspid stenosis. The dog underwent a right fifth lateral intercostal thoracotomy and surgical tricuspid valvulotomy, under cardiopulmonary bypass. The stenosis was relieved by dividing the valve leaflets between the two orifices with continuation to the commissures, creating a 'bileaflet' valve. The dog made a good recovery initially, with echocardiography at 48 h after surgery showing a reduction in tricuspid valve E and A wave velocities and pressure half-time (from 230 ms to 65 ms). She was discharged five days after surgery, and spironolactone, benazepril, pimobendan, and clopidogrel were prescribed. The dog was re-presented two days later having collapsed, with pyrexia, facial swelling, and pitting edema on the ventral neck and intermandibular region. Investigations did not reveal an underlying cause, and the clinical signs resolved with supportive therapy. Two years after surgery, the dog was free of clinical signs with normal exercise tolerance and only mild tricuspid regurgitation on echocardiography, with discontinuation of all medications.

Harmful invader ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi's expansions in the Eurasian Seas, its spatio-temporal population dynamics depending on environmental conditions in recipient habitats have been synthesized. M. leidyi found suitable temperature, salinity and productivity conditions in the temperate and subtropical environments of the semi-enclosed seas, in the coastal areas of open basins and in closed water bodies, where it created autonomous populations. M. leidyi changes its phenology depending on seasonal temperature regime in different environments. We assessed ranges of sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity and sea surface chlorophyll values, sufficient for M. leidyi general occurrence and reproduction based on comprehensive long-term datasets, contributed by co-authors. This assessment revealed that there are at least two eco-types (Southern and Northern) in the recipient seas of Eurasia with features specific for their donor areas. The range of thresholds for M. leidyi establishment, occurrence and life cycle in both eco-types depends on variability of environmental parameters in their native habitats.

INTRODUCTION: Current treatment of food allergies consists of the elimination of the offending food from the diet. Desensitization or tolerance induction can be an alternative for those children who have not achieved tolerance spontaneously. We propose a cow's milk desensitization protocol carried out in an outpatient setting over a 9-10 week period. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Eighteen children older than 4 years with cow's milk protein allergy confirmed by open oral challenge with milk underwent a desensitization protocol beginning with 0.05 mL of cow's milk, reaching 1 mL on the first day, and increasing the dosage weekly until a dose of 200-250 mL of milk taken once a day was tolerated. RESULTS: By the end of the desensitization protocol, 16 of the 18 patients tolerated 200-250 mL of cow's milk in a single daily dose. The median length of the process was 14 weeks (interquartile range, 11-17 weeks). One patient withdrew due to recurrent symptoms with 2 mL and another reached a tolerance of 40 mL of milk a day. During the program, 11 children (68.75%) presented symptoms that were generally mild but which increased the length of the protocol. At the time of writing, the 16 patients who completed the program continue to tolerate milk, 13 of them for more than a year. CONCLUSIONS: Tolerance of cow's milk was achieved in 16 out of 18 patients who took part in this study. One patient only tolerated 40 mL, which prevents the risk of reactions caused by the inadvertent intake of the food substance; 1 patient is still on a milk-free diet. We believe this cow's milk desensitization protocol to be effective and reasonably safe.

Allergies to iron salts are seldom reported. We studied a patient with iron-deficiency anemia who had suffered anaphylactic reactions caused by oral iron salts. An allergy study was performed using single-blind, placebo-controlled oral challenge and skin tests with various iron salts as well as excipients in commercial formulations. Oral challenges were positive for 2 of the commercial formulations of iron salts. Intradermal tests with ferrous sulphate and ferrous lactate also showed positive results. All of the cutaneous tests using the excipients were negative. A desensitization protocol was designed which enabled us to readminister ferrous sulphate, although antihistamines were necessary to guarantee good tolerance to iron salts. We report a patient with allergy to iron salts, positive skin tests, and positive controlled challenge. We highlight the desensitization protocol designed to complete the therapeutic management of the anemia.

Amanitins are toxins found in species of the mushroom genera Amanita, Lepiota and Galerina. Intoxication after ingestion of these mushrooms can be fatal with an estimated 20% of mortality rate. An early diagnosis is necessary in order to avoid invasive and expensive therapy and to improve patient's prognosis. In this paper, a Capillary Zone Electrophoresis method was developed and validated to determine alpha- and beta-amanitin in urine in less than 7 min using 5 mM, pH 10 borate buffer as background electrolyte. The separation conditions were: capillary: 75 microm I.D., 41 cm effective length, 48 cm total length, 25 degrees C, 20 KV and PDA detection at 214 nm. Sample treatment for analysis only required urine dilution in background electrolyte. The method was validated following established criteria and was found to be selective, linear in the range 5-100 ng/ml. Intra- and inter-day precision and accuracy were within required limits. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 1.5 and 5 ng/ml, respectively. Eight urine samples from suspected cases of intoxication with amanitins were analyzed after 2 years of storage at -20 degrees C, and beta-amanitin was determined in two samples with concentrations of 53 and 65 ng/ml, respectively. The method here described includes the use of non-aggressive reagents to the capillary or the system and is the first Capillary Electrophoresis method used to determine amanitins in clinical samples.

BACKGROUND: Circulating natriuretic peptide concentrations are increased in cats with myocardial dysfunction. HYPOTHESIS: Serum N-terminal fragment of proatrial natriuretic peptide (NT-proANP) and NT-probrain natriuretic peptide (proBNP) concentrations may predict the presence of heart disease (HD) and congestive heart failure (CHF). A positive relationship is also predicted among natriuretic peptide (NP) concentrations, a noninvasive estimate of left ventricular filling pressure (E/E(a)), and an echocardiographic measure of left atrial (LA) size (LA/aortic diameter [Ao]). METHODS: Serum NP concentrations were measured in 28 healthy control and 50 study cats using sandwich enzyme immunoassays. The study group comprised cats, with HD but no CHF (HD - CHF, n = 17) and cats with CHF (HD + CHF, n = 33). The relationship among NP concentrations, LA size, and E/E(a) was examined. The ability of NP to distinguish control from study cats, and HD - CHF from HD + CHF cats, was explored using receiver operator curve analysis. RESULTS: NP concentrations were significantly lower in control than in study cats (P= .0001). The NT-proBNP concentrations were positively correlated with LA/Ao ratio (rho= 0.34; P= .02) and with E/E(a) ratio (rho= 0.68; P < .05). An NT-proBNP concentration of 49 fmol/mL gave a sensitivity and specificity of 100 and 89.3%, respectively, for correctly distinguishing 96.2% of control from study cats. Pairwise comparisons of the areas under the curve identified a statistically significant difference (P= .011) between NT-proANP and NT-proBNP to distinguish control from study cats. NT-proANP and NT-proBNP concentrations were significantly higher in HD + CHF cats than in HD - CHF cats (P= .0023 and .0001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Serum concentrations of NT-proANP and particularly NT-proBNP were different in healthy control cats, asymptomatic cats with HD, and cats with CHF, suggesting that measurement of NP concentrations may prove clinically useful as an initial screening test for cats with suspected cardiac disease.
