RESUMEN

Fecal calprotectin (fCPT) has been used as a surrogate marker for assessment of intestinal inflammation. We explore the utility of fCPT values as a diagnostic aid in cancer patients with suspected Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). A total of 232 stool specimens submitted for GeneXpert C. difficile PCR testing were included in the study. All specimens were tested for fCPT and toxin/GDH antigens. Clinical severity of CDI cases was determined by the IDSA/SHEA criteria. Significant differences of median fCPT values between CDI (n = 117, Median 183.6 µg/g) and non-CDI (n = 115, 145.6 µg/g, p = 0.006) patients were seen. In CDI patents, significantly lower fCPT values were found in patients with mild to moderate (n = 95, 182.1 µg/g) than those with severe and severe to complicated (n = 22, 218.5 µg/g, p = 0.014) scores, and among those that were toxin positive (n = 24, 200.2 µg/g) vs. toxin negative (n = 86, 182.8 µg/g, p = 0.044). Despite this overall trend, wide variations in fCPT values were found in all categories examined. A logistic regression analysis revealed that the fCPT values correlated independently with the severity of clinical manifestations (OR = 2.021, 95%CI = 1.132-3.608); however, it did not correlate with other clinical outcomes. Our study findings show that high fecal calprotectin levels correlate with toxin-positive and clinically severe CDI; however, wide variations in individual measurements preclude establishment of reliable cut-offs for routine diagnostic use in cancer patients.

RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of the present study was to establish the association between the presence of oral and uro-vaginal microorganisms in the placental membrane and preterm delivery (PTD), the premature rupture of membranes (PRM), and the clinical signs of intra-amniotic infection. METHODS: Eighty-four women with PTD and 127 women with delivery at term were assessed for the PRM, clinical signs of intra-amniotic infection, and the presence of periodontitis. Twenty-seven microorganisms were identified in the placental tissue using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) was quantified by droplet digital PCR. RESULTS: The prevalence of microorganisms was 9.47% (20/211). P. gingivalis was the most prevalent (12/211, 5.68%). Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Staphylococcus spp, and Fusobacterium nucleatum were isolated at a very low frequency in the placenta. Candida albicans was associated with PTD (P = 0.027). Periodontitis was associated with clinical signs of infection (odds ratio [OR] = 3.8, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.28-13.5) and with PTD (OR = 1.99; 95% CI: 1.07-3.72). CONCLUSION: The presence of P. gingivalis in the placenta was not associated with perinatal complications. Detecting microorganisms in the placenta by nested PCR is not relevant, as it has a poor association with clinical variables that establish the diagnosis of chorioamnionitis. However, periodontitis was associated with the clinical signs of intra-amniotic infection and PTD.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Data on 200 species of spiders were collected to assess the global threat status of the group worldwide. To supplement existing digital occurrence records from GBIF, a dataset of new occurrence records was compiled for all species using published literature or online sources, from which geographic coordinates were extracted or interpreted from locality description data. NEW INFORMATION: A total of 5,104 occurrence records were obtained, of which 2,378 were from literature or online sources other than GBIF. Of these, 2,308 had coordinate data. Reporting years ranged from 1834 to 2017. Most records were from North America and Europe, with Brazil, China, India and Australia also well represented.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is the most widely used information source on the extinction risk of species. One of the uses of the Red List is to evaluate and monitor the state of biodiversity and a possible approach for this purpose is the Red List Index (RLI). For many taxa, mainly hyperdiverse groups, it is not possible within available resources to assess all known species. In such cases, a random sample of species might be selected for assessment and the results derived from it extrapolated for the entire group - the Sampled Red List Index (SRLI). The current contribution is the third in four papers that will constitute the baseline of a future spider SRLI encompassing 200 species distributed across the world. NEW INFORMATION: A sample of 200 species of spiders were randomly selected from the World Spider Catalogue, an updated global database containing all recognized species names for the group. The 200 selected species where divided taxonomically at the family level, and the familes were ordered alphabetically. In this publication, we present the conservation profiles of 58 species belonging to the famillies alphabetically arranged between Oecobiidae and Salticidae, which encompassed Oecobiidae, Oonopidae, Orsolobidae, Oxyopidae, Palpimanidae, Philodromidae, Pholcidae, Pisauridae, Prodidomidae and Salticidae.

With the current contribution and the three following papers, we intend to create the first point in time of a future spider SRLI encompassing 200 species distributed across the world. NEW INFORMATION: A sample of 200 species of spiders were randomly selected from the World Spider Catalogue, an updated global database containing all recognised species names for the group. The 200 selected species where divided taxonomically at the family level and the familes were ordered alphabetically. In this publication, we present the conservation profiles of 46 species belonging to the famillies alphabetically arranged between Agelenidae and Filistatidae, which encompassed Agelenidae, Amaurobiidae, Anyphaenidae, Araneidae, Archaeidae, Barychelidae, Clubionidae, Corinnidae, Ctenidae, Ctenizidae, Cyatholipidae, Dictynidae, Dysderidae, Eresidae and Filistatidae.

Objective Determining Leptospira spp . antibody seroprevalence in an apparently healthy population and in groups at risk plus their associated factors in the town of Villavicencio in the Meta department of Colombia Materials and Methods A cross-sectional epidemiological model was used (subjects being selected by convenience sampling). Blood-samples were obtained by cubital puncture from (n: 503) people, consisting of 230 first semester students from different programmes at the Universidad de los Llanos and 273 people corresponding to 8 groups at risk. Information regarding risk factor was obtained from interviewing the 503 people. A commercial indirect ELISA kit (Pambio) was used for determining IgM antibodies. Results Seroprevalence was 5,2 percent in the low risk group. There was 19 percent seroprevalence for groups at risk, 7 percent for the group of people working in slaughterhouses, 17 percent for vets and small animal clinic assistants, 17 percent for students in their last year of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnia, 21 percent for people milking cows on dual-purpose farms, 23 percent for people working in rice-fields, 35 percent for people working on pig-farms and 48 percent for those working on fish-farms. Three factors were found to be associated: rural social level, having a pet dog and coming into contact with rodents in the workplace. Conclusions A high seroprevalence for Leptospira spp was found in the groups at risk, people working on pig-farms and fish-farms being those most affected. There was a 1,86 relative risk in both groups indicated as having a greater risk of contagion amongst the population suffering occupational exposure.
