RESUMEN

High pseudocapacitive activity of hydrated tungsten oxides (WO3·xH2O, x = 1 or 2) makes them promising materials for supercapacitors (SCs). During their synthesis, additives such as complexing agents and surfactants generally can only affect the morphology and/or size of the products. Here, we demonstrate that not only morphology and size of WO3·xH2O were affected, its phase composition could also change from WO3·2H2O to WO3·H2O simply by increasing the amount of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) during its anodization synthesis. To the best of our knowledge, such a phenomenon has not been reported before. In addition, SDS introduced a special structure to the products, i.e., WO3·xH2O nanoplatelets constructed from nanoparticle multilayers with abundant nanogaps between the multilayers, which further arranged into nanoflowers with increased amounts of SDS. Benefiting from such a structure, low internal resistance, enhanced stability, and fast redox kinetics, the as-obtained WO3·xH2O/W-3 self-supporting electrode showed a high volumetric specific capacitance of 1402.92 F cm-3 and good cycling stability (a capacity retention of 106% after 10 000 cycles). In addition, an all-solid-state asymmetric SC device based on WO3·xH2O/W-3 delivered high a volumetric energy density of 44.0 mW h cm-3 at 0.5 W cm-3. Our method demonstrates a potential way to fabricate excellent self-supporting electrodes for SCs.

OBJECTIVES: The benefits of professional dental treatment for oral diseases have been widely investigated. However, it is unclear whether professional dental treatment provides additional benefits for improving general health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999 to 2004 and 2011 to 2018 cycles. A total of 36,174 participants were included and followed-up for mortality until December 31, 2019. Dental visit behavior was defined as the time interval of last dental visit (TIDV, < 0.5 year, 0.5-1 year, 1-2 years, 2-5 years, and > 5 years) and the main reasons of the last dental visit (treatment, examination, and other reasons). The Cox proportional risk model was used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: Compared with participants with time interval of less than 0.5 year, the multivariate-adjusted HRs and 95%CI for participants with time interval of more than 5 years were 1.45 (1.31, 1.61) for all-cause mortality (P trend < 0.0001), 1.49 (1.23, 1.80) for cardiovascular diseases mortality (P trend = 0.0009) and 1.53 (1.29, 1.81) for cancer mortality (P trend = 0.013). Compared with dental visit for examination, participants who had their dental visit for treatment had higher risk for mortality. For participants with dental visit for examination, TIDV of less than 1 year showed lower risk for mortality, whereas TIDV of less than 0.5 year is recommend for population with dental visit for treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Poor dental visit behavior is associated with an increased risk of mortality. Further well-designed studies are needed to confirm the association between professional dental visit and mortality. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study highlights the potential benefits of regular dental visits in maintaining general health.

The development of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics devices for circulating tumor cells (CTCs) detection plays an important role in the early diagnosis of pheochromocytoma (PCC), especially in a low-resource setting. To further realize the rapid, portable, and high-throughput detection of CTCs, an Au@CuMOF cascade enzyme-based microfluidic device for instant point-of-care detection of CTCs was constructed by combining a smartphone application and a commercial portable glucose meter (PGM). In this microfluidic system, DOTA and norepinephrine (NE) modified Au@CuMOF signal probes and Fe3O4@SiO2 capture probes were used for the dual recognition and capture of rare PCC-CTCs. Then, the targeted binding of the Au@CuMOF cascade nanozymes to the CTCs endowed the cellular complexes with multienzyme mimetic activities (i.e., glucose oxidase-like and peroxidase-like activity) to catalyze glucose reduction as signal output for colorimetric and personal glucose meter (PGM) dual-mode detection of CTCs. The developed method has a linear range of 4 to 105 cells mL-1 and a detection limit of 3 cells mL-1. This method allows the simultaneous detection of six samples and demonstrates good applicability for CTCs detection in whole blood samples. More importantly, the combination of PGM, smartphone app and array microfluidic chips enables the rapid, portable, and high-throughput diagnoses of PCC, and providing provide a convenient and reliable alternative to traditional liquid biopsy diagnosis of various cancers.

BACKGROUND: Food impaction can contribute to a variety of oral health problems. However, the prevalence of food impaction in the population and patient awareness of these issues are poorly reported on. METHODS: A questionnaire about food impaction was designed and uploaded to an online platform (Sojump) which was then circulated among the study participants using various social media platforms. Participants were asked to anonymously respond to the questionnaire regarding the prevalence of food impaction, its influence on their quality of life, their consultation rates and their oral cleaning methods. The survey was conducted through an online survey portal. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS and GraphPad. The Chi-Square test, Bonferroni test and the Kruskal-Wallis H test were used to measure categorical variables from the survey. RESULTS: The results showed that the prevalence of food impaction in non-dental professional participants was 86.9%. Among these patients, 12,157 pairs/cases of proximal contacts were affected. The number of food impaction cases in posterior teeth was significantly higher than in anterior teeth. Approximately 81.9% of patients believed that food impaction could affect their lives. However, the consultation rate for these patients was only 17.7%. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that food impaction continued to have a high rate of incidence and a low rate of consultation, potentially due to a lack of awareness regarding its influence on oral health. To effectively prevent and address problems resulting from food impaction, both dentists and society need to enhance oral health knowledge in the population.

For decades chlorine dioxide has been used in water disinfection with excellent results. As the scope of application expands, chlorine dioxide has the potential for soil disinfection. We used amplicon sequencing and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to compare the changes of four mixed rhizosphere microbial community samples and 12 tobacco leaf volatile samples four months after the flood irrigation with chlorine dioxide in different concentrations (0, 2, 4, 8 mg/l). Phenotypic data of 60 tobacco plants were also collected. The effects of chlorine dioxide on rhizosphere microorganisms were positively correlated with dose gradients. Bacteria responded more strongly in both community structure and metabolic pathways than fungi. Five new bacterial phyla (Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, Myxococcota, Patescibacteria, Verrucomicroboata) appeared in chlorine dioxide treatment groups, while the fungal community only appeared as one new fungal phylum (Basidomycota). Alterations in 271 predicted metabolic bacterial pathways were found. However, in the fungal community were only 10 alternations. The correlations between leaf volatile compounds and rhizosphere microorganisms under the influence of chlorine dioxide treatment could be observed based on network results. However, natural connectivity had already been declining rapidly when less than 20% of the network's nodes were removed. Therefore, the microbe-metabolite network is not stable. It might be why chlorine dioxide treatments did not significantly affect tobacco quality (p = 0.754) and phenotype (p = 0.867). As a comprehensive investigation of chlorine dioxide in agriculture, this study proves the effectiveness and safety of chlorine dioxide soil disinfection and widens the application range of chlorine dioxide.

BACKGROUND: Although tooth loss is widely recognized as a typical sign of aging, whether it is associated with accelerated aging, and to what extent diet quality mediates this association are unknown. METHODS: Data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The missing tooth counts were recorded as the number of edentulous sites. Phenotypic accelerated aging was calculated using 9 routine clinical chemistry biomarkers and chronological age. Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) score was used to evaluate diet quality. Multivariate logistic regression and linear regression were used to analyze the association between tooth loss and accelerated aging. Mediation analyses were used to examine the mediation role of diet quality in the association. RESULTS: The association between tooth loss and accelerated aging was confirmed. The highest quartile of tooth loss showed a positive association with accelerated aging (ß=1.090; 95% confidence interval, 0.555 to 1.625; P < .001). Diet quality decreased with increase number of missing teeth and showed a negative association with accelerated aging. Mediation analysis suggested that the HEI-2015 score partially mediated the association between tooth loss and accelerated aging (proportion of mediation: 5.302%; 95% confidence interval, 3.422% to 7.182%; P < .001). Plant foods such as fruits and vegetables were considered the key mediating food. CONCLUSIONS: The association between tooth loss and accelerated aging, as well as the partially mediating role of dietary quality in this association was confirmed. These findings suggested that more attention should be paid to the population with severe tooth loss and the changes of their dietary quality.

Digestive system pan-cancer is a general term for digestive system tumors including colorectal carcinoma (CRC), esophageal carcinoma (ESCA), stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD), and liver hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC). Since the anatomical location, function and metabolism are closely related, there may be similarities in development and progression of these tumors. Hypoxia is the consequence of an imbalance between oxygen demand and supply, and intracellular hypoxia is associated with malignant progression, treatment resistance, and poor prognosis in tumors. Therefore, an urgent and challenging task is to investigate the molecular mechanisms associated with hypoxia in digestive system pan-cancer for the prognosis and treatment of digestive tract tumors. In this study, we identified 18 hypoxia-related lncRNAs (HRlncRNAs) by co-expression analysis between hypoxia genes and lncRNAs from digestive system pan-cancer. Six HRlncRNAs were then obtained using lasso regression and multivariate cox analysis to construct a prognostic model. Next, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) values for 3-year receiver operating curve (ROC) were counted to determine the cut-off point and establish an optimal model to distinguish between high- or low-risk groups among patients with digestive system pan-cancer. To evaluate the stability of the prognosis model, we validated it in terms of survival outcomes, clinicopathological stage, tumor-infiltrating immune cells, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and anticancer drugs sensitivity. The results suggested that high- risk group had a worse prognosis and a more positive association with tumor-infiltrating immune cells such as B cells, cancer-associated fibroblasts, endothelial cells, monocytes, macrophages and bone marrow dendritic cells in digestive system pan-cancer. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) related biomarkers discovered that high-risk group was positively correlated with high expression of HAVCR2 in digestive system pan-cancer. The anticancer drugs sensitivity analysis showed that the high-risk group was associated with the lower half-inhibitory centration (IC50) of Imatinib in digestive system pan-cancer. In conclusion, the prognostic model of HRlncRNAs showed a promising clinical prediction value and may provide a useful reference for the diagnosis and treatment of the digestive system tumors.

The development of smart, portable, and sensitive devices for the monitoring of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is essential to diagnose several diseases, including pheochromocytoma (PCC). Therefore, in this study, a dual-mode (electrochemical/visual) microfluidic device was designed for the rapid and sensitive detection of PCC-CTCs using a microfluidic chip for automatic cell sampling and detection and a smartphone-based three-dimensional-printed accessory for signal output analysis. The device was employed to capture and identify PCC-CTCs via specific immunogenic binding to the norepinephrine transporter and somatostatin receptor, which are overexpressed on the surface of PCC cells. Specifically, targeted-modified magnetic particles were used to capture and separate PCC-CTCs from peripheral blood; then, similarly modified covalent organic framework based nanozymes (COF@Pt) were used as peroxidase mimics to amplify the electrochemical response from H2O2 reduction and catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine by hydroxyl radicals in the presence of the PCC cells to enable visual quantification. Using the prepared microfluidic device, a low detection limit of 1 cell mL-1 at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 and a wide linear range of 2 to 105 cells mL-1 were achieved. Overall, this work demonstrates a portable, sensitive, and visual platform for PCC diagnostics that meets the requirement for quick and precise point-of-care diagnostics.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in women, and its morbidity and mortality are increasing year by year worldwide. Therefore, an urgent and challenging task is to identify potential biomarkers for cervical cancer. This study aims to identify the hub genes based on the GEO database and then validate their prognostic values in cervical cancer by multiple databases. By analysis, we obtained 83 co-expressed differential genes from the GEO database (GSE63514, GSE67522 and GSE39001). GO and KEGG enrichment analysis showed that these 83 co-expressed it mainly involved differential genes in DNA replication, cell division, cell cycle, etc.. The PPI network was constructed and top 10 genes with protein-protein interaction were selected. Then, we validated ten genes using some databases such as TCGA, GTEx and oncomine. Survival analysis demonstrated significant differences in CDC45, RFC4, TOP2A. Differential expression analysis showed that these genes were highly expressed in cervical cancer tissues. Furthermore, univariate and multivariate cox regression analysis indicated that CDC45 and clinical stage IV were independent prognostic factors for cervical cancer. In addition, the HPA database validated the protein expression level of CDC45 in cervical cancer. Further studies investigated the relationship between CDC45 and tumor-infiltrating immune cells via CIBERSORT. Finally, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) showed CDC45 related genes were mainly enriched in cell cycle, chromosome, catalytic activity acting on DNA, etc. These results suggested CDC45 may be a potential biomarker associated with the prognosis of cervical cancer.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer type 1 susceptibility (BRCA) mutations not only increase breast cancer (BC) risk but also result in poor survival and prognosis for BC patients. This study will analyze the effect and safety of therapeutic regimens for the treatment of BC patients with germline BRCA (gBRCA) mutations by network meta-analysis. METHODS: Public databases were searched from inception to 29 April 2021. Frequentist network meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the benefit of chemotherapy and targeted drug-related strategies. RESULTS: Seventeen articles were included in the analysis. For progression-free survival (PFS), olaparib (hazard ratio (HR): 0.58; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.43 - 0.79), platinum (HR: 0.45; 95% CI: 0.22 - 0.89), and talazoparib (HR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.41 - 0.71) were significantly better than platinum-free chemotherapy (Chemo). The results based on indirect comparisons showed that veliparib (Vel) + platinum + Chemo was also significantly better than Chemo (HR: 0.37; 95% CI: 0.20 - 0.69). For overall survival (OS), olaparib was significantly better than Chemo only in the population who did not receive prior chemotherapy. For pathologic complete response (pCR), bevacizumab+Chemo had a significant advantage over platinum agents (OR: 3.64; 95% CI: 1.07 - 12.39). Olaparib and talazoparib both showed significantly higher objective response rates (ORRs) than Chemo. CONCLUSION: The PFS results suggested that olaparib, talazoparib, and Vel+platinum agent+Chemo were ideal regimens for overall, TNBC, and advanced BC patients with gBRCA mutations. Whether PARPis are suitable for patients with gBRCA mutations who have received prior platinum therapy still needs to be clarified.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in the regulation of gene expression by acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs). However, the roles of lncRNA-associated ceRNAs in oncogenesis are not fully understood. The present study aims to determine whether a ceRNA network can serve as a prognostic marker in human prostate cancer (PCa). In order to identify a ceRNA network and the key lncRNAs in PCa, we constructed a differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs)-differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMis)-differentially expressed mRNAs (DEMs) regulatory network based on the ceRNA theory using data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We found that the DELs-DEMis-DEMs network was composed of 27 DELs nodes, seven DEMis nodes, and three DEMs nodes. The 27 DELs were further analyzed with several public databases to provide meaningful information for understanding the functional roles of lncRNAs in regulatory networks in PCa. We selected ADAMTS9-AS1 to determine its role in PCa and found that ADAMTS9-AS1 significantly influences tumor cell growth and proliferation, suggesting that it plays a tumor suppressive role. In addition, ADAMTS9-AS1 functioned as ceRNA, effectively becoming a sponge for hsa-mir-96 and modulating the expression of PRDM16. These results suggest that ceRNAs could accelerate biomarker discovery and therapeutic strategies for PCa.
