RESUMEN

A FMCW LiDAR system of both the distributed feedback laser and external cavity laser is established in baseband beat notes, rather than up-conversion to an intermediate frequency to exclude flicker noise. Meanwhile, utilizing fast-scanning MEMS mirrors, high-quality real-time (1 fps) 4-D images of the slow-moving object (10 mm/s) can be directly constructed at the baseband with a central frequency as low as 100 kHz and a small Doppler shift. The proposed LiDAR architecture based on such a low-frequency baseband significantly improves the optical power budget on the transmitter side and eliminates the costly high-speed sampling circuits on the receiver side.

RESUMEN

We propose and demonstrate a short and broadband silicon mode-conversion polarization splitter-rotator (PSR) consisting of a mode-conversion taper and an adiabatic coupler-based mode sorter both optimized by adiabaticity engineering (AE). AE is used to optimize the distribution of adiabaticity parameter over the length of the PSR, providing shortcut to adiabaticity at a shorter device length. The total length of the PSR is 85 µm. The design is compatible with standard silicon photonics platforms and requires only one patterning step. Fabricated PSR has a polarization cross talk of less than -20 dB over the entire O-band for the TE polarization and a polarization cross talk of less than -15 dB from 1267 to 1348 nm for the TM polarization. Overall, the PSR shows low polarization cross talk (-15 dB) over a bandwidth of 81 nm in the O-band. Cross-wafer measurements show that the PSR has good fabrication tolerance.

RESUMEN

Dye-contaminated wastewaters from the printing batik industry are hazardous if discharged into the environment without any treatment. Finding an optimization and reusability assessment of a new fungal-material composite for dye-contaminated wastewater treatment is important for efficiency. The study purposes to optimize fungal mycelia Trametes hirsuta EDN 082 - light expanded clay aggregate (myco-LECA) composite for real priting batik dye wastewater treatment by using Response Surface Methodology with Central Composite Design (RSM-CCD). The factors included myco-LECA weight (2-6 g), wastewater volume (20-80 mL), and glucose concentration (0-10%) were applied for 144 h of incubation time. The result showed that the optimum condition was achieved at 5.1 g myco-LECA, at 20 mL wastewater, and at 9.1% glucose, respectively. In this condition, the decolorization values with an incubation time of 144 h were 90, 93, and 95%, at wavelengths 570, 620, and 670 nm, respectively. A reusability assessment was conducted for 19 cycles and the result showed that decolorization effectiveness was still above 96%. GCMS analysis showed the degradation of most compounds in the wastewater and the degradation products of the wastewater demonstrated detoxification against Vigna radiata and Artemia salina. The study suggests that myco-LECA composite has a good performance and therefore is a promising method for the treatment of printing batik wastewater.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Home care aides play an important role in providing long-term care services, but there is currently an insufficient supply of workers to meet the growing demand in Taiwan due to the increasing number of older adults and people with disabilities requiring care. There are numerous factors that influence the retention of home care aides. Previous research has indicated that taking employees' individual personalities into account can enhance task delegation and organizational efficiency within an organization. Severe occupational burnout is likely to diminish vitality and disrupt sleep, which, in turn, can result in higher employee turnover rates. To date, no research has explored the correlation between personality traits, burnout, work experience, and the retention of home care aides. Given these gaps in knowledge, the present study aims to investigate how personality traits and occupational burnout are associated with the intention to stay among home care aides in Taiwan. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional survey that utilized purposive sampling to interview 285 home care aides in Hualien County from December 2020 to January 2021. A self-report questionnaire, administered with informed consent, was used to collect data on demographics, work experience, occupational burnout, personality, and intention to stay. The researchers utilized hierarchical regression analysis to analyze the data. All measurements exhibited high reliability and consistency, with Cronbach's α values ranging from 0.8 to 0.9. RESULTS: The subscales for personal burnout, work-related burnout, and client-related burnout, along with all personality scales, were highly correlated with intention to stay, except for the openness trait (p < .05). Moreover, married, full-time employment, satisfied with the promotion system and current job as home care aides on the whole, lower levels of work-related burnout, and agreeable personality type were found to be significant predictors for intention to stay (p < .05) , and the adjusted R2 of the model was 29.4%. CONCLUSIONS: This study has concluded that using personality traits as a criterion to select home care aides with a high level of agreeableness prior to recruitment, enhancing the professionalism and comprehensive of promotion system, and reducing work burnout are measures that may help home care service providers increase the intention to stay among home care aides.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate a quasi-adiabatic polarization-independent 2×2 3 dB coupler based on the silicon-on-insulator platform. Using a quasi-adiabatic taper design for the mode evolution/coupling region, the TE mode evolution is accelerated, and the TM mode coupling is achieved at a short coupling length. The measured working bandwidth is 75 nm with a compact mode evolution/coupling region of 11.7 µm.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate a Si/SiO/SiO2-based period-chirped guided mode resonance (GMR) filter to discriminate telecom o-band wavelengths by spatially resolved horizontal movement. Continuously period-chirped silicon gratings were fabricated by using a Lloyd's laser interferometer with a convex mirror. Due to the large waveguide effective index, the GMR filter can be realized with a short grating period, thus enabling a slow grating period transition along the sample position and high optical resolution in wavelength discrimination. Depositing a SiO/SiO2 stack on top of silicon gratings enables a narrowband GMR filter with a linewidth of 1-1.5 nm over a wavelength range of 1260-1360 nm. By using the chirped GMR filter as a dispersive device, the optical spectra of a near-infrared broadband light source are reconstructed. An optimized aspheric mirror is proposed to further improve the linearity of chirped gratings. Such a period-chirped GMR filter is promising for compact on-chip spectroscopy and sensing applications.

RESUMEN

This work develops a tunable chirped guided-mode resonant (GMR) filter that has a hybrid splay-twist (HST) liquid crystal as a cladding layer. The GMR filter is a color reflector that strongly reflects light at the resonance wavelength, and its chirped grating structure supports tuning of the resonance peak over a wavelength range of over 50 nm. The HST-LC configuration serves as an achromatic polarization rotator that can rotate the axis of polarization of linearly polarized light by providing effective twist angles in the LC layer under an applied voltage. The HST-LC is used to change the direction of the polarization axis of the light that is reflected by the GMR filter; continuous angles of rotation of ∼90∘ are achieved and the linear polarization is retained under applied voltages. The proposed filter enables an ultrabroadband polarization rotation and still maintains a high degree of linear polarization, which allows more degrees of freedom in spectral and polarization controls.

RESUMEN

We design and fabricate a series of broadband silicon arbitrary power splitters with various split ratios using shortcuts to adiabaticity. In this approach, the system evolution is designed using the decoupled system states, and the desired split ratios are guaranteed by the boundary conditions. Furthermore, the system evolutions are optimized to be as close to the adiabatic states as possible, thus enhancing the robustness to wavelength and fabrication variations. The devices are more compact then the conventional adiabatic designs. Fabricated devices show broadband response for a wide wavelength range from 1.47 to 1.62 µm and also have excellent robustness against fabrication errors across an 8-inch wafer.

RESUMEN

The performance of a photonic functional device in bulk CMOS has been limited by the high propagation loss in polysilicon strip waveguide. Based on the zero-process-change methodology, we successfully reduce the propagation loss of polysilicon waveguide from 112 dB/cm to only 38 dB/cm by solely engineering the waveguide geometry for the first time. Low propagation loss is attributed to a significantly reduced optical overlap factor of 0.09 to bulk polysilicon using subwavelength grating (SWG) waveguide design. These findings prompt us to demonstrate a narrowband SWG-based cladding-modulated Bragg reflector in bulk CMOS, which provides a full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of 1.63 nm, an extinction ratio of 24.5 dB, and a reduced temperature sensitivity of 27.3 pm/°C. Further reducing the FWHM to 0.848 nm is also achieved by decreasing the grating coupling strength. We believe the achievements made in this work validate a promising design path towards practical photonic-electronic applications in bulk CMOS.

RESUMEN

Thin film electrocatalysts allow strong binding and intimate electrical contact with electrodes, rapid mass transfer during reaction, and are generally more durable than powder electrocatalysts, which is particularly beneficial for gas evolution reactions. In this work, using cobalt manganese oxyhydroxide, an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst that can be grown directly on various electrodes as a model system, it is demonstrated that breaking a continuous film into discontinuous patches can significantly enhance the overall OER performance without sacrificing long-term stability even under elevated electrocatalytic stress. Discontinuous films with higher edge-to-area ratios exhibits reduced overpotentials, increased turnover frequency, and more pronounced current increase after electrochemical conditioning. Operando Raman spectroscopy studies during electrocatalysis reveal that the film edges require lower potential barrier for activation. Introducing discontinuity into thin film electrocatalysis can thus lead to the realization of high performance yet highly robust systems for harsh gas evolution reactions.

RESUMEN

We report a 2×2 broadband and fabrication tolerant mode-evolution-based 3 dB coupler based on silicon-on-insulator rib waveguides. The operating principle of the coupler is based on the adiabatic evolution of local eigenmodes. The key element of the device is an adiabatically tapered mode evolution region, which converts two dissimilar waveguides into two identical waveguides. Contrary to conventional designs using a linear taper function where the device adiabaticity is uneven during evolution, we use the fast quasiadiabatic approach to homogenize the adiabaticity of the device, leading to a shortcut to adiabaticity. Devices with an optimized taper region of 26.3 µm are designed and fabricated in a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatible process with 193 nm deep ultraviolet lithography. The measured devices exhibit a broadband 3 dB±0.5 dB splitting within a bandwidth of 100 nm, uniformly across a 200-mm wafer, showing good tolerance against fabrication variations.

RESUMEN

In this work, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, an anomalous dispersion CMOS-compatible Ta2O5 waveguide was realized, and broadband on-chip supercontinuum generation (SCG) was accordingly demonstrated. When pumped at a center wavelength of 1056 nm with pulses of 100 fs duration and peak power of 396 W, a supercontinuum ranging from 585 nm to 1697 nm was generated, comprising a bandwidth of more than 1.5 octaves and leading to an efficient SCG source. The excellent performance for Ta2O5 to generate SCG benefits mainly from its high nonlinear refractive index, which enhances the efficiency of the nonlinear conversion process.

RESUMEN

We describe herein the preparation of certain 2-substituted 3-arylquinoline derivatives and the evaluation of their anti-inflammatory effects in LPS-activated murine J774A.1 macrophage cells. Among these newly synthesized 2-substituted 3-arylquinoline derivatives, 2-(4-methoxy- benzoyl)-3-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)quinoline (18a) and 2-(4-fluorobenzoyl)-3-(3,4,5-trimethoxy- phenyl)quinoline (18b) are two of the most active compounds which can inhibit the production of NO at non-cytotoxic concentrations. Our results have also indicated that compounds 18a and 18b significantly decrease the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-á and IL-6), inhibit the expression of iNOS, suppress the phosphorylation of MAPKs, and attenuate the activity of NF-êB by LPS-activated macrophages. Through molecular docking analysis, we found that 18b could fit into the middle of the TNF-á dimer and form hydrophobic interactions with Leu55, Leu57 chain A and B, Tyr59, Val123 chain B and D, Ile 155. These results suggest that both 18a and 18b are potential lead compounds in inhibiting LPS-induced inflammatory responses. Further structural optimization to discover novel anti-inflammatory agents is ongoing.

RESUMEN

In this work we introduce a tunable GMR filter based on continuously period-chirped (ΔP = 130 nm) gratings using a Ta2O5 waveguide layer with graded thickness (ΔT = 36 nm). The structure of the gradient-period grating is defined using a modified Lloyd's mirror interferometer with a convex mirror, and Ta2O5 film used for the gradient is deposited using masked e-beam evaporation. The as-realized chirped GMR filter provides sharp transmission dips at resonant wavelengths with a filter bandwidth of approximately 4.2 nm and 0.78 nm when respectively applied to TE and TM polarized light under normal incidence. Gradually sweeping the chirped GMR filter makes it possible to monotonically sweep through resonant wavelengths from 500 to 700 nm, while maintaining stable filter bandwidth and transmission intensity. The optical spectrum of the incoming light can then be loyally reconstructed accordingly. We successfully demonstrate the spectrum reconstruction of a white light emitting diode and a dual-peak laser beam using the proposed chirped GMR filter as a dispersive device.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Inflammation has been found to be associated with many neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's and dementia. Attenuation of microglia-induced inflammation is a strategy that impedes the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS: We used lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to simulate murine microglia cells (BV2 cells) as an experimental model to mimic the inflammatory environment in the brain. In addition, we examined the anti-inflammatory ability of corylin, a main compound isolated from Psoralea corylifolia L. that is commonly used in Chinese herbal medicine. The production of nitric oxide (NO) by LPS-activated BV2 cells was measured using Griess reaction. The secretion of proinflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) by LPS-activated BV2 cells was analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor containing pyrin domain 3 (NLRP3), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase-activation and recruitment domain (ASC), caspase-1, IL-1ß and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in LPS-activated BV2 cells was examined by Western blot. RESULTS: Our experimental results demonstrated that corylin suppressed the production of NO and proinflammatory cytokines by LPS-activated BV2 cells. In addition, corylin inhibited the expression of iNOS and COX-2, attenuated the phosphorylation of ERK, JNK and p38, decreased the expression of NLRP3 and ASC, and repressed the activation of caspase-1 and IL-1ß by LPS-activated BV2 cells. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate the anti-inflammatory effects of corylin acted through attenuating LPS-induced inflammation and inhibiting the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in LPS-activated BV2 cells. These results suggest that corylin might have potential in treating brain inflammation and attenuating the progression of neurodegeneration diseases.

RESUMEN

This study tested the effect of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inhibition on Vibrio parahaemolyticus BCRC (Bioresource Collection and Research Center) 10806 and BCRC 12865 in a food model. MTT [3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] assays indicated that Caco-2 cells were not damaged after a two-hour treatment with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and V. parahaemolyticus. The LAB cell culture and supernatant effectively inhibited the growth of V. parahaemolyticus in a food model. ELISA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) results indicated the significant inhibition of TNF-α; IL-1ß; and IL-6; but Lactobacillus plantarum PM 222 and L. plantarum LP 735 did not significantly affect IL-8 levels. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results indicated that LAB could inhibit the mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-8; IL-6; and TNF-α; which were induced by V. parahaemolyticus. After rat-received LAB; the expression levels of TNF-α; IL-6; and IL-8 in the serum decreased significantly. In intestinal histology; the rat that received L. plantarum PM 222 and L. plantarum LP 010 was able to alleviate the intestinal villi damage caused by V. parahaemolyticus; which also helped reduce cell apoptosis. In conclusion; our results indicate that LAB can inhibit inflammatory responses caused by V. parahaemolyticus and can effectively inhibit the growth of V. parahaemolyticus in food products.

RESUMEN

Graphene oxide (GO) ultrathin film can be wafer-scale deposited by spin coating, can be patterned by laser interference lithography and oxygen plasma etching, can be thinned atomically (0.26 nm/min) and oxidized by ozone treatment, and is a relatively transparent and low-refractive-index material compared to pristine graphene. All those unique properties prompt us to realize a low-loss (∼5 dB/cm), high-extinction-ratio (19 dB), and narrowband (0.425 nm) GO/silicon hybrid waveguide Bragg reflector by transferring 7-nm-thick GO gratings (n=1.58) atop a silicon strip waveguide. Unlike a sidewall-corrugated strip waveguide Bragg reflector that generally exhibits distorted corrugation profiles and is sensitive to fabrication errors, the as-realized GO-grating-covered strip waveguide Bragg reflector exhibits a stable reflecting wavelength and controllable reflection bandwidth that can be well predicted by numerical simulations.

RESUMEN

In this work, we proposed a full-color reflector using three stacked red (R), green (G), and blue (B) reflection gratings which are combined with the tunable 90° twisted nematic liquid crystals (TNLCs). The color reflector based on guided-mode resonance (GMR) gratings reflects strongly at the resonance wavelength. The optical reflectivity of GMR gratings can then be controlled by using 90° TNLCs to change the polarization of incident light. The optical characteristics and the chromaticity of the designed reflectors were evaluated by simulation. An individual RGB chip with/without LC was demonstrated experimentally. The fabricated GMR reflector for red exhibits a high TE/TM polarization ratio of >10:1 and 80% optical reflectivity at resonant wavelength, while the GMR reflector for blue only allows 60% optical reflectivity and a degraded polarization ratio of 3:1 mainly due to high optical absorption of silicon. Nevertheless, the silicon-based GMR reflector enables a wide reflection bandwidth, so a full-color reflector can be realized by vertically stacking RGB tunable reflectors. The proposed full-color reflector therefore exhibits a wide-gamut color space with low driving voltage of <3 V, showing its promise for use in energy-saving reflective information systems.
