BACKGROUND: There is debate concerning the need for specialist neurosurgical transfer of patients presenting to Level II trauma centers with a minimal head injury (Glasgow Coma Scale ≥13) and a small non-progressive intracranial bleeding (ICB). METHODS: A retrospective chart analysis was performed assessing the outcomes of adult patients presenting with a minor traumatic ICB on initial CT scan (minimal subarachnoid hemorrhage; small-width subdural hematoma without shift; punctate cerebral contusion). Patients with extradural hematomas and those patients on antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy were excluded from the protocol. RESULTS: Overall 291 cases were assessed (mean age 69.9 years) with 75% of cases presenting after a fall. There was deterioration of neurological status in 11 patients (3.8%) with 8 hospital transfers and 5 with an abnormal neurological examination (NE). Two patients with an abnormal INR and a worsening head CT were transferred without neurosurgical intervention. Of the 8 transferred cases there were 2 deaths (both >90 years of age with multiple comorbidities) with one craniotomy performed for a subdural hematoma (with full recovery). Three patients meeting transfer criteria were not transferred with one death (patient >90 years of age with severe dementia). The remaining 2 patients were discharged with normal neurological outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with a minimal traumatic brain injury and a non-progressive minor ICB may be safely managed in a Level II trauma center by an acute care consultant with neurosurgical consultation but without the need for neurosurgical transfer. The present study investigates the hemotoxic and cytotoxic impacts of two acute doses of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the African catfish, Clarias garepinus in comparison to the impact of AgNO3 and the control fish. AgNPs-induced impacts were recorded on some biological and hematological indices of that species on the bases of their size (20 and 40 nm) and concentration (10 and 100 µg) but no significant interaction. AgNO3 had very low impact on these indices in comparison to AgNPs. Recovery period for 15 days was found to be valid to remove AgNPs and AgNO3 toxicity for most indices. The condition factor exhibited stability under stress whereas the hepatosomatic index was more sensitive to AgNPs. The AgNPs-induced hematological changes recorded were corresponding with different blood cell alterations which increased in frequency from the control and AgNO3 to 40 nm/100 µg; such blood cell alterations disappeared to great extent after recovery period of 15-days in a reverse order.

The present study investigates the nephrotoxic effects of two acute doses of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) on the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, using biochemical, histochemical, and histopathological changes as biomarkers. AgNP-induced impacts were recorded in some of these characteristics on the bases of their size (20 and 40 nm) and concentration (10 and 100 µg/L) but no significant interaction between size and concentration. AgNO3 had low significant adverse effects on some parameters in comparison with those impacts of AgNPs. The concentrations of creatinine and uric acid exhibited different significant variations under stress in all exposed groups compared with those in the control group. On the tissue and cell levels, histopathological changes were observed. These changes include hypertrophies of glomeruli, proliferation in the haemopoietic tissue, dissociation in renal tubules, shrinkage of glomerulus, hydropic degeneration, dilatation of renal tubules, aggregation of melanomacrophages, rupture of Bowman's capsule, and the glomerular tuft and dilatation of Bowman's space. In more severe cases, the degenerative process leads to tissue necrosis in the kidney of AgNP-exposed fish as well as carbohydrate depletion; a faint coloration was also observed in the brush borders and basement membrane with a large amount of connective tissue fibers around the blood vessels and the renal tubules. Recovery period for 15 days led to improvement of most of the alterations in biochemical, histopathological, and histochemical parameters induced by AgNPs and AgNO3. In conclusion, one can postulate on the sensitivity of the kidney of C. gariepinus to AgNPs and recovery strategy is a must.

Background Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a lifelong autoimmune disorder. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene is a potential candidate gene for cSLE susceptibility. In this study, we aimed to investigate the FokI polymorphism in the VDR gene in Egyptian children and adolescents with SLE, to determine whether this polymorphism could be a genetic marker for cSLE susceptibility or disease activity and we also measured the serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH) D] to assess its relation to such polymorphism. Methods This was a case-control study, which included 300 patients with cSLE and 300 age, sex, and ethnicity-matched healthy controls. All participants were genotyped for the VDR gene FokI (rs2228570) polymorphism by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), while the serum [25(OH) D] levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results The VDR FokI FF genotype and F allele were overrepresented among cSLE patients compared with the controls, [odds ratio (OR) = 2.7; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.6-4.4 for the FF genotype; p = 0.000; and OR = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.27-2.05 for the F allele; p = 0.000, respectively]. We found a significant association between VDR FokI FF genotype with lupus nephritis (OR: 4.8; 95% CI: 2.2-10.6; p = 0.002); and high disease activity index score ( p = 0.01). Conclusions The FokI polymorphism in the VDR gene may contribute to susceptibility to SLE in Egyptian children and adolescents. Moreover, the FF genotype constituted a risk factor for the development of lupus nephritis and was associated with low serum [25(OH) D] levels as well as higher disease activity index score among studied patients with cSLE.

The synthesis of ultrathin, single-crystalline zinc oxide nanowires was achieved by treating in a flowing microwave plasma oxidation process, zinc films coated beforehand by a sputtered thin buffer layer of copper. The aspect ratio of the nanowires can be controlled by the following experimental parameters: treatment duration, furnace temperature, oxygen concentration. An average diameter of 6 nm correlated with a mean length of 750 nm can be reached with a fairly high surface number density for very short treatments, typically less than 1 min. The oxidized samples are characterized by means of SEM, XRD, SIMS, HRTEM and EDX techniques. Structural characterization reveals that these nanowires are single-crystalline, with the wurtzite phase of ZnO. Nanowires are only composed of ZnO without copper particles inside or at the end of the nanowires. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements confirm that ZnO nanowires are of high crystalline quality and thin enough to produce quantum confinement.

PURPOSE: Epidemiological evidence suggests a role for an infectious etiology for cancers in teenagers and young adults (TYAs). We investigated this by describing associations between infection transmission using the population mixing (PM) proxy and incidence of cancers in TYAs in Yorkshire, UK. METHODS: We extracted cancer cases from the Yorkshire Specialist Register of Cancer in Children and Young People from 1990 to 2013 (n = 1929). Using multivariable Poisson regression models (adjusting for effects of deprivation and population density), we investigated whether PM was associated with cancer incidence. We included population mixing-population density interaction terms to examine for differences in effects of PM in urban and rural populations. RESULTS: Nonsignificant IRRs were observed for leukemias (IRR 1.20, 95% CI 0.91-1.59), lymphomas (IRR 1.09, 95% CI 0.90-1.32), central nervous system tumors (IRR 1.06, 95% CI 0.80-1.40) and germ cell tumors (IRR 1.14, 95% CI 0.92-1.41). The association between PM and cancer incidence did not vary in urban and rural areas. CONCLUSIONS: Study results suggest PM is not associated with incidence of cancers among TYAs. This effect does not differ between rural and urban settings.

This case report presents an atypical instance of pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (MS) in a 12-year-old male, a demographic less commonly affected by this condition. The patient's clinical course was marked by severe and progressive symptoms, including lower limb weakness and loss of bowel/bladder control, diverging from the typical relapsing-remitting pattern observed in pediatric MS. Despite initial resistance to high-dose steroid treatment, his condition was ultimately stabilized through plasmapheresis, following the detection of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibodies. Unique aspects of this case included the patient's young age, male gender, and the occurrence of osteopenia, as identified by a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan. This report highlights the variability in MS presentations among pediatric patients and underscores the importance of a personalized, multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment. It contributes to the growing body of knowledge on pediatric MS, emphasizing the need for heightened clinical vigilance and tailored management strategies in young patients with this complex and lifelong disease.

The prevalence of multimorbidity tends to increase with age, but it is now also reported in the middle-aged population, which has a negative impact on healthcare systems and health outcomes. This study aims to analyze the patterns and factors associated with multimorbidity in Indonesia. This national cross-sectional population-based survey used publicly available data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS-5) for 2014 among middle-aged (40-59 years old) and elderly (≥ 60 years old) respondents. Information on all chronic diseases was assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. Sociodemographic and health-related behavioral factors were obtained from self-reported data. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with multimorbidity. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported. The study recruited 11,867 respondents. The prevalence of multimorbidity was 18.6% (95% CI 17.9-19.3) with which 15.6% among middle age (95% CI 14.95-16.25) and 24.9% among the elderly (95% CI 24.12-25.68). Hypertension was the most commonly reported disease (23.2%) in all combinations of multimorbidity and among all age groups. Socio-demographic factors: elderly (AOR: 1.66; 95% CI 1.46-1.89), female (AOR: 1.42; 95% CI 1.20-1.69), living in the urban area (AOR: 1.22; 95% CI 1.09-1.38), higher educational level (AOR: 2.49; 95% CI 1.91-3.26), unemployed (AOR: 1.63; 95% CI 1.44-1.84), and higher economic level (AOR: 1.41; 95% CI 1.18-1.68) were associated with multimorbidity. Poor health behavior factors: being former smokers (AOR: 2.03; 95% CI 1.65-2.51) and obesity (AOR: 1.53; 95% CI 1.35-1.75) were also associated with multimorbidity. The prevalence of multimorbidity in the middle-aged and elderly population in Indonesia is relatively high, particularly in populations with poor health behaviors. Therefore, healthcare professionals should integrate more patient-specific factors when designing and implementing tailored interventions to manage multimorbidity in Indonesia.

1. Hydroxyurea (HU) is a drug used for the treatment of haemoglobinopathies. Hydroxyurea functions by upregulating γ-globin transcription and fetal haemoglobin (HbF) production in erythroid cells. The K562 erythroleukaemia cell line is widely used as a model system in which to study the mechanism of γ-globin induction by HU. However, the transcription factors required for the upregulation of γ-globin expression by HU in K562 cells have not been identified. Similarities between the HU and sodium butyrate (SB) pathways suggest cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) 1 as a potential candidate. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the possible role of CREB1 in the HU pathway. 2. Experiments were performed using transient and stable RNA interference (RNAi) to show that CREB1 is necessary for HU-mediated induction of γ-globin expression and haemoglobin production in K562 cells. 3. Furthermore, western blot analyses demonstrated that CREB1 becomes phosphorylated in a dose-dependent manner after HU (100-400 µmol/L) treatment of K562 cells for 72 h. 4. We also investigated role of a Gγ promoter CREB1 response element (G-CRE) in this pathway. Quantitative amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction experiments were performed to demonstrate that HU induces the expression of both Gγ and Aγ in this cell line. In addition, electrophoretic mobility shift assays were used to show that levels of CREB1 complexes binding to the G-CRE site are increased following HU treatment and are decreased in CREB1-knockdown cells. 5. The results suggest that CREB1 is necessary for γ-globin induction by HU in K562 cells, a role that may be mediated, in part, through the G-CRE element.

The present study investigated the hormones concentrations and gonads alterations of Clarias gariepinus caused by sublethel concentrations of 4-nonylphenol (0, 0.05, 0.08 and 0.1 mg/l). The changes in the activities of the hormones after exposure to these sublethel doses of 4-nonylpenol referred to endocrine disruption in Clarias gariepinus in association with histopathological changes in reproductive tissues. The levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), total thyroxine (T4), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone concentrations significantly decreased (P<0.05) in the treated fish in comparison with control. 17-ß-estradiol increased significantly (P<0.05) with 4-nonylphenol concentrations increase. Reduction in the gonadosomatic index was evident with increase of sublethal doses of 4-nonylphenol. The histopathological changes of NP-treated were recorded in gonads of Clarias gariepinus reflecting their sensitivity to NP-estrogenic like effects.

BACKGROUND: Defining the hepatic artery anatomy is of great importance for both surgeons and radiologists. Michel classification was designed to classify hepatic artery variations. Nevertheless, there are variations that do not fit into this classification. In this study, we aim to define the incidence of all variations in a healthy liver donor by reviewing their computed tomography (CT) scan with special emphasis on variations that do not fit in any of the Michel classes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of CT scan of donors and potential liver donors who were evaluated by triphasic CT scan. The CT scans were reviewed independently by a radiologist and two transplant surgeons. Cases that did not fit in any of the Michel classes were classified as class 0. RESULTS: Out of 241 donors, 210 were classified within the Michel classification, of which 60.9% were class I and 9.1% class II. Thirty-one (12.9%) donors classified as class 0. Of which, nine, three, two and three had replaced right hepatic artery from pancreaticoduodenal artery, gastroduodenal artery, aorta and coeliac artery, respectively. Two and six donors had accessory right hepatic artery from pancreaticoduodenal artery and gastroduodenal artery, respectively. Segment 4 artery originated from left and right hepatic artery in 56.8% and 31.9%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A great caution should be taken when evaluating the hepatic artery anatomy, clinicians should anticipate and be familiar with the rare unclassified variations of the hepatic artery.

Although, the effects of 4-non-ylphenol (4-NP) on fish's reproductive hormones were assessed in several studies using adult models, however, the effect of this endocrine disruptor on immature fish's reproductive hormones was not addressed commonly. We aimed to study the apoptosis induction, hematotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, and the recovery associated with 4-NP exposure in juvenile African catfish [Clarias garepinus) using some hormones [17ß-estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH)] and gonad histology as biomarkers. The toxic effects of 4-NP have been studied in many animal models, but there is still limited knowledge about the dose-dependent damage caused by 4-NP exposure in juvenile Clarias gariepinus. A healthy juvenile C. gariepinus was categorized into four groups (n = 3/group; three replicates in each group). The first group was the control, and the other three groups were subjected to 4-NP concentrations as 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 mg/L for 15 days; they were left for a recovery period of another 15 days. The reproductive hormones of C. gariepinus exposed to 4-NP for 15 days exhibited significant variations between the treatment groups and the control (P < 0.05), which were evident in E2 and T-values, whereas FSH, LH, total protein, and lipid peroxidation values showed non-significant differences among all groups at P < 0.05. Such a situation referred to the fact that the 15-day recovery period was insufficient to remove the impacts of 4-NP doses in concern. The trend of dose-dependent increase/decrease was recorded for T, E2, FSH, and LH. The histopathological alterations of 4-NP treated in gonad tissues were recorded in juvenile C. gariepinus, reflecting their sensitivity to 4-NP estrogenic-like effects. Overall, our results investigate that recovery has improved the reproductive toxicity caused by 4-NP in juvenile C. garepinus. Significant variations between the treated groups and the control group (P < 0.05) were evident in hematological parameters except for hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The parameters exhibiting significance decreased with such increased doses [red blood cells (RBCs), hematocrit (Hct), and white blood cells (WBCs)]. Similar patterns of significant variations toward the increase or decrease were recorded following the 15-day recovery period. Apoptotic frequency in erythrocytes and brain cells has increased significantly with increased 4-NP exposure, indicating that 4-NP caused cytotoxic effects, such as apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. However, these cellular alterations greatly decreased after the 15-day recovery period.

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) and acute pancreatitis are peculiar complications of pregnancy. When acute pancreatitis occurs co-incidentally with acute fatty liver of pregnancy, mortality is high. Here, we report a case of a 22-year-old lady in her 36th week of gestation, who presented with pre-eclampsia, acute fatty liver of pregnancy and acute pancreatitis. She fulfilled six Swansea criteria for diagnosis of AFLP, and the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis was based on clinical suspicion, elevated pancreatic enzymes and the sonographic appearance of a swollen pancreatic head.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are usually unable to express abdominal discomfort properly, and thus gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS) are sometimes shadowed by aggression, which is sometimes misunderstood as a behavioral characteristic of ASD. Several studies have reported interesting correlations between the severity of behavioral and gastrointestinal symptoms in ASD children. The present study aimed to investigate the potential effects of probiotics as an adjuvant therapy to modulate the clinical status of ASD children. This study included 40 children with ASD aged 2-5 years. The feeding product was prepared from whey powder (without casein) and some minced cooked yellow vegetables in adequate ratios fortified with the studied probiotic strains (Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus spp.). Bifidobacterium strains were assessed from stool samples of children with ASD. Bifidobacterium strains were analyzed in the stools of ASD children. Recruited ASD patients received 10 g of the nutritional supplement once a day for 3 months. Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADIR) were reevaluated clinically. Questionnaire on Pediatric Gastrointestinal Symptoms-Rome III Version was used for all children with ASD before and after. There is a significant increase in the colony counts of both Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus spp., which present in the stool of ASD children after probiotic supplementation for 3 months. It was highly significant in the case of Bifidobacterium spp. (p value 0.000) and a significant increase in Lactobacillus spp. (p value 0.015). The present study showed reduced anxiety and observation of deep sleep for children with ASD (80%) after taking the supplementation. This indicates that probiotics may have a potential effect in reducing symptoms and severity of ASD and in correcting dysbiosis.

The present study investigates the potential protective effects of tomato paste (9 mg/kg-lycopene) in comparison with vitamin E (50 mg/kg) against the impacts of cadmium (Cd) toxicity (4.64 mg/l: » of 96 h LC50) on fishes Cd exposed for 15 and 30 days. Cd impacts were evaluated in terms of biological, haematological and biochemical characteristics. Cd significantly induced free radicals in serum and liver. The activities of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase in serum were significantly increased due to Cd. Treatment with Cd caused a significant increase in Lipid peroxidation and DNA fragmentation in liver tissue and serum glucose and total lipid. On the other hand, Cd significantly led to decline in serum total protein, blood haemoglobin, red blood cell count, haematocrit value, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration. Dietary supplementation with vitamin E and/or tomato paste to Cd-exposed fish declined significantly the increased lipid peroxidation and DNA fragmentation in liver tissue and the increased aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, glucose and total lipid in serum to the normal condition. This supplementation also significantly increased the declined serum total protein, blood haemoglobin, red blood cell count, haematocrit value, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration to the normal state. Cd impacts and tomato paste/or vitamin E supplementations did not reflected on the condition factor of the fish. These findings demonstrated the beneficial diet supplementation of tomato paste phytonutrients and vitamin E in counteracting the harmful effects of Cd on the characters investigated.

BACKGROUND: Cholangiocarcinoma (CC) is a fatal malignancy, the incidence of which is increasing worldwide, with substantial regional variation. Current diagnostic techniques to distinguish benign from malignant biliary disease are unsatisfactory. Metabolic profiling of bile may help to differentiate benign from malignant disease. No previous studies have compared the metabolic profiles of bile from two geographically and racially distinct groups of CC patients. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare metabolic profiles of bile, using in vitro proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, from CC patients from Egypt and the UK, and from patients with CC and patients with non-malignant biliary disease. METHODS: A total of 29 bile samples, collected at cholangiography, were analysed using an 11.7-T system. Samples were from eight CC patients in either Egypt (n = 4) or the UK (n = 4) and 21 patients with benign biliary disease (choledocholithiasis [n = 8], sphincter of Oddi dysfunction [n = 8], primary sclerosing cholangitis [n = 5]). RESULTS: Bile phosphatidylcholine (PtC) was significantly reduced in CC patients. Egyptian CC patients had significantly lower biliary PtC levels compared with UK patients. Taurine- and glycine-conjugated bile acids (H-26 and H-25 protons, respectively) were significantly elevated in bile from patients with CC compared with bile from patients with benign diseases (P = 0.013 and P < 0.01, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Biliary PtC levels potentially differentiate CC from benign biliary disease. Reduced biliary PtC in Egyptian compared with UK patients may reflect underlying carcinogenic mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: The base of the skull, particularly the pterygomaxillary region, has a sophisticated topography, the morphometry of which interests pathologists, maxillofacial and plastic surgeons. The aim of the study was to conduct pterygomaxillary morphometrics and test relevant hypotheses on sexual and laterality-based dimorphism, and causality relationships. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We handled 60 dry skulls of adult Asian males (36.7%) and females (63.3%). We calculated the prime distance D [prime] for the imaginary line from the maxillary tuberosity to the midpoint of the pterygoid process between the upper and the lower part of the pterygomaxillary fissure, as well as the parasagittal D [x-y inclin.] and coronal inclination of D [x-z inclin.] of the same line. We also took other morphometrics concerning the reference point, the maxillary tuberosity. RESULTS: Significant sexual as well as laterality-based dimorphism and bivariate correlations existed. The univariate models could not detect any significant effect of the predictors. On the contrary, summative multivariate tests in congruence with neural networks, detected a significant effect of laterality on D [x-y inclin.] (p-value = 0.066, partial eta squared = 0.030), and the interaction of laterality and sex on D [x-z inclin.] (p-value = 0.050, partial eta squared = 0.034). K-means clustering generated three clusters highlighting the significant classifier effect of D [prime] and its three-dimensional inclination. CONCLUSIONS: Although the predictors in our analytics had weak-to-moderate effect size underlining the existence of unknown explanatory factors, it provided novel results on the spatial inclination of the pterygoid process, and reconciled machine learning with non-Bayesian models, the application of which belongs to the realm of oral-maxillofacial surgery.

RESUMEN

Neuroscience research in Africa remains sparse. Devising new policies to boost Africa's neuroscience landscape is imperative, but these must be based on accurate data on research outputs which is largely lacking. Such data must reflect the heterogeneity of research environments across the continent's 54 countries. Here, we analyse neuroscience publications affiliated with African institutions between 1996 and 2017. Of 12,326 PubMed indexed publications, 5,219 show clear evidence that the work was performed in Africa and led by African-based researchers - on average ~5 per country and year. From here, we extract information on journals and citations, funding, international coauthorships and techniques used. For reference, we also extract the same metrics from 220 randomly selected publications each from the UK, USA, Australia, Japan and Brazil. Our dataset provides insights into the current state of African neuroscience research in a global context.

Vitamin A and its biologically active derivatives, the retinoids, are recognized as key regulators of vertebrate development, cell growth, and differentiation. Although nuclear receptors have held the attention since their discovery a decade ago, we report here on serine/threonine kinases as a new class of retinoid receptors. The conserved cysteine-rich domain of the NH(2)-terminal regulatory domains of cRaf-1, as well as several select domains of the mammalian protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms alpha, delta, zeta, and mu, the Drosophila and yeast PKCs, were found to bind retinol with nanomolar affinity. The biological significance was revealed in the alternate redox activation pathway of these kinases. Retinol served as a cofactor to augment the activation of both cRaf and PKC alpha by reactive oxygen, whereas the classical receptor-mediated pathway was unaffected by the presence or absence of retinol. We propose that bound retinol, owing to its electron transfer capacity, functions as a tag to enable the efficient and directed redox activation of the cRaf and PKC families of kinases.

Many ultraviolet-A (UVA)-induced biochemical and physiological changes are valid as biomarkers using aquatic species for detection of the degree of stress. Changes in the concentration and activities of enzymes, such as glucose-6-phosphate dehyderogenase (G6PDH), lactate dehyderogenase (LDH), DNA damage and lipid peroxidation (LPO), can be used as biomarkers to identify possible environmental contamination in fish. This study aimed to investigate the impact of UVA on the activity of the selected enzymes, DNA damage and LPO during early developmental stages of the African catfish Clarias gariepinus. Embryo hemogenates were used for measurements of G6PDH, LDH, DNA damage and LPO concentrations and activities spectrophotometrically at 37 degrees C. The normal ontogenetic variations in enzyme activities, DNA damage and LPO of the early developmental stages (24-168 h-PFS; hours-post fertilization stage) were studied. There was a significant decrease in the activity of G6PDH till 120 h-PFS. Then after 120 h-PFS, the activity of such enzymes insignificantly increased toward higher stages. The LDH activity was recorded with a pattern of decrease till 96 h-PFS, followed by a significant increase toward 168 h-PFS. The polynomial pattern of variations in DNA damage and LPO was also evident. The patterns of the enzyme activities, corresponding DNA damage and LPO of the early ontogenetic stages under the influence of three different UVA doses (15, 30 and 60 min), were recorded. The pattern of variations in G6PDH activity in UVA-induced groups was similar to that of the control group with variation in the magnitude of such activity. In all treated groups, LDH activity decreased till 96 h-PFS, then increased till 168 h-PFS. Within each of the embryonic stages, the increase in UVA led to a significant increase in DNA damage. A significant increase in lipid peroxidation under UVA doses was recorded. The variability in number and molecular weight of proteins under exposure to UVA was evident, reflecting some of the genetic and transcriptional changes during exposure and development.
