The human smile can convey both rewarding and affiliative social intent and thus has significant utility in politics, where the ability to bond with and reassure voters is vital to electoral success. We examine experimental evidence from the 2019 UK general election to investigate the influence of a politician's reward or affiliative smile on voter emotions. It was hypothesised that the winner's affiliative smile would engender positive affect across all partisan groups compared to the winner's reward smile display. Participants from a nationally representative sample were shown campaign footage containing both types of smiles from the leaders of the main competing political parties both before and after the election. Increases in happiness and affinity were revealed across all partisan groups when shown footage of the eventual winner's affiliative smile; at the same time, supporters of losing parties indicated a decrease in negative affect. Affinity has been shown to increase civic engagement. Thus, we conclude that affiliative smiles displayed by leading candidates during the campaign likely acted as a mechanism to align voter behaviour with the dominant political message.

INTRODUCTION: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is often reduced in patients with urolithiasis. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review to describe impact on HRQoL based on different modalities of treatment for small urolithiases with a diameter smaller or equal to 10 mm. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched with no language or date restrictions to identify studies which were included if they reported: adult patients (≥18 years old), renal or ureteral stone(s) confirmed on imagery, validated reporting of HRQoL, stone diameter equal or smaller than 10 mm undergoing active surveillance, medical expulsive therapy (MET), shockwave lithotripsy (SWL), or ureteroscopy (URS). RESULTS: Of 672 citations, nine articles were eligible. Five studies (all ureteral) reported HRQoL according to medical stone management. Three of them found that HRQoL in MET patients was better than in active surveillance patients and two studies found no difference in HRQoL between MET and active surveillance groups. Four studies (three ureteral, one renal) reported HRQoL according to surgical stone management. Of the ureteral stone studies, two reported better HRQoL in URS patients than in SWL patients, while one study found no difference between URS and SWL groups. In the renal stone study, SWL patients had better HRQoL than URS patients. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with urinary stones 10 mm or smaller have better HRQoL when treated with MET vs. active surveillance, when treated with SWL vs. URS for renal stones, and when treated with URS vs. SWL for ureteral stones. There is an important need for more studies on this topic.

INTRODUCTION: Most robot-assisted surgery (RAS) systems in Canada are donor-funded, with constraints on implementation and access due to significant costs, among other factors. Herein, we evaluated the impact of the growing multispecialty use of RAS on urologic RAS access and outcomes in the past decade. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all RAS performed by different surgical specialties in two high-volume academic hospitals between 2010 and 2019 (prior to the COVID pandemic). The assessed outcomes included the effect of increased robot access over the years on annual robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) volumes, surgical waiting times (SWT), and pathologically positive surgical margins (PSM). Data were collected and analyzed from the robotic system and hospital databases. RESULTS: In total, six specialties (urology, gynecology, general, cardiac, thoracic, and otorhinolaryngologic surgery) were included over the study period. RAS access by specialty doubled since 2010 (from three to six). The number of active robotic surgeons tripled from seven surgeons in 2010 to 20 surgeons in 2019. Moreover, there was a significant drop in average case volume, from a peak of 40 cases in 2014 to 25 cases in 2019 (p=0.02). RARP annual case volume followed a similar pattern, reaching a maximum of 166 cases in 2014, then declining to 137 cases in 2019. The mean SWT was substantially increased from 52 days in 2014 to 73 days in 2019; however, PSM rates were not affected by the reduction in surgical volumes (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Over the last decade, RAS access by specialty has increased at two Canadian academic centers due to growing multispecialty use. As there was a fixed, single-robotic system at each of the hospital centers, there was a substantial reduction in the number of RAS performed per surgeon over time, as well as a gradual increase in the SWT. The current low number of available robots and unsustainable funding resources may hinder universal patient access to RAS.

BACKGROUND: 'Neuromarketing' is a term that has often been used in the media in recent years. These public discussions have generally centered around potential ethical aspects and the public fear of negative consequences for society in general, and consumers in particular. However, positive contributions to the scientific discourse from developing a biological model that tries to explain context-situated human behavior such as consumption have often been neglected. We argue for a differentiated terminology, naming commercial applications of neuroscientific methods 'neuromarketing' and scientific ones 'consumer neuroscience'. While marketing scholars have eagerly integrated neuroscientific evidence into their theoretical framework, neurology has only recently started to draw its attention to the results of consumer neuroscience. DISCUSSION: In this paper we address key research topics of consumer neuroscience that we think are of interest for neurologists; namely the reward system, trust and ethical issues. We argue that there are overlapping research topics in neurology and consumer neuroscience where both sides can profit from collaboration. Further, neurologists joining the public discussion of ethical issues surrounding neuromarketing and consumer neuroscience could contribute standards and experience gained in clinical research. SUMMARY: We identify the following areas where consumer neuroscience could contribute to the field of neurology:First, studies using game paradigms could help to gain further insights into the underlying pathophysiology of pathological gambling in Parkinson's disease, frontotemporal dementia, epilepsy, and Huntington's disease.Second, we identify compulsive buying as a common interest in neurology and consumer neuroscience. Paradigms commonly used in consumer neuroscience could be applied to patients suffering from Parkinson's disease and frontotemporal dementia to advance knowledge of this important behavioral symptom.Third, trust research in the medical context lacks empirical behavioral and neuroscientific evidence. Neurologists entering this field of research could profit from the extensive knowledge of the biological foundation of trust that scientists in economically-orientated neurosciences have gained.Fourth, neurologists could contribute significantly to the ethical debate about invasive methods in neuromarketing and consumer neuroscience. Further, neurologists should investigate biological and behavioral reactions of neurological patients to marketing and advertising measures, as they could show special consumer vulnerability and be subject to target marketing.

Further antibody tests and laboratory studies showed that the patient met the criteria for latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). In this case report, we will review the diagnostic workup and management of LADA in an individual following his COVID-19 infection.

We propose here that marketing research should increase consideration of the brain health of consumers, and argue that it would help both extend our current knowledge of vulnerable and other marginalised groups, as well as extend generalizability and external validity of marketing research in general. We show that such a focus would help enrich methodology, especially around causal inference, as well as impact on our understanding of a number of key emerging themes in marketing research. We particularly focus on the consumer behaviour around digitalisation, as well as compulsive buying behaviour. Further, we show that increasing consideration of consumer brain health will further efforts towards inclusivity of marketing, and help continue progress towards marketing research as a force for good.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation is a high-risk surgery associated with important perioperative bleeding and transfusion needs. Uncertainties remain on the association between preoperative fibrinogen level and bleeding in this population. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study that included all consecutive adult patients undergoing a liver transplantation for end-stage liver disease in 1 center. We analyzed the association between the preoperative fibrinogen level and bleeding-related outcomes. Our primary outcome was intraoperative blood loss, and our secondary outcomes were estimated perioperative blood loss, intraoperative and perioperative red blood cell transfusions, reinterventions for bleeding and 1-y graft and patient survival. We estimated linear regression models and marginal risk models adjusted for all important potential confounders. We used restricted cubic splines to explore potential nonlinear associations and reported dose-response curves. RESULTS: We included 613 patients. We observed that a lower fibrinogen level was associated with a higher intraoperative blood loss, a higher estimated perioperative blood loss and a higher risk of intraoperative and perioperative red blood cell transfusions (nonlinear effects). Based on an exploratory analysis of the dose-response curves, these effects were observed below a threshold value of 3 g/L for these outcomes. We did not observe any association between preoperative fibrinogen level and reinterventions, 1-y graft survival or 1-y patient survival. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that a lower fibrinogen level is associated with bleeding in liver transplantation. The present results may help improving the selection of patients for further studies on preoperative fibrinogen administration in liver transplant recipients with end-stage liver disease.

INTRODUCTION: In the United States (U.S.), African Americans and other minority groups have longer wait times for kidney transplantation than Caucasians. To date, many studies analyzing time spent on the waitlist for each race/ethnicity have been done. However, there are few to no studies examining waitlist time after the 2019 policy changes to the geographic distribution of donated kidneys. METHODS: Data collected from the National Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network database were used to analyze associations between race and time spent on the waitlist for a kidney transplant in the U.S. Additional sub-categorical data were analyzed to determine further associations and potential covariates, such as gender, age, citizenship, primary source of payment, region of transplant center, BMI, Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI), renal diagnosis, and presence/type of diabetes. Data were analyzed using odds ratios and validated by Bonferroni-Holm's corrected chi-square tests at confidence intervals of 95% to determine if there are statistically significant differences between transplant time spent on the waitlist and ethnicity, as well as age, diagnosis category, region of transplant center, and KDPI. RESULTS: Statistically significant increased odds of remaining on the transplant list at two years existed for all non-white races/ethnicities, except those identifying as multiracial. Asian American candidates had the greatest odds of remaining on the waitlist greater than two years in comparison to white candidates: 1.51 times that of a patient categorized as white (odds ratio [OR] 1.51, confidence interval [CI] 1.44-1.57). African American/Black, (OR 1.38, CI 1.34-1.43) Pacific Islander (OR 1.38, CI 1.17-1.63), Hispanic candidates (OR 1.37, CI 1.32-1.41), and American Indian or Native Alaskan candidates (OR 1.23, CI 1.12-1.46) also had increased odds of remaining on the transplant waitlist greater than two years compared to white candidates. DISCUSSION: In this study, ethnic disparities persisted as a barrier for non-white individuals receiving treatment for end-stage kidney disease, specifically in the context of time spent on the waitlist for a kidney transplant. Further research is needed regarding the causes of these disparities in time spent on the waitlist, such as cultural restrictions in organ donation, racial differences in parameters for organ match, and institutionalized racism in health care practitioners.

This study examined the effect of collaborative learning (CL) versus traditional lecture-based learning (TL) pedagogies and gender group composition in effecting positive or negative attitudes of biology major and nonmajor men and women students. The experimental research method was administered in experimental and control groups to test the hypotheses. Students' attitudes refer to their positive or negative feelings and inclinations to learn biology. A nine-factor attitude scale was administered in (1) single-gender nonmajor biology, (2) mixed-gender nonmajor biology, (3) single-gender major biology, and (4) mixed-gender biology major groups. Men (221) and women (219) were randomly assigned into single and mixed-gender classes without groups and single-gender groups (4M) or (4W) and mix-gender (2M+2W) groups. In CL nonmajor and major single-gender groups, women demonstrated significantly higher positive attitudes than men. In contrast, men's attitudes were significantly improved in mixed-gender CL groups for major and nonmajor sections, and the effect size was larger in mix-gender classes. Women feel less anxious in single-gender groups but more anxious in mixed-gender groups. In mixed-gender groups, men's self-efficacy, general interest, and motivation enhanced significantly; overall, men experienced greater satisfaction and triggered their desire to collaborate better, affecting all nine attitudinal factors. There was an interaction effect demonstrating the teaching pedagogy's impact on improving students' attitudes toward biology; students' gender and gender-specific group composition have been the most influential factor for nonmajor students. These findings suggest that there is a need for developing gender-specific and context-specific learning pedagogies, and instructors carefully select gender grouping in teaching undergraduate science subjects.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) have difficulty maintaining optimal vitamin D status due to pancreatic insufficiency-induced malabsorption, inadequate sunlight exposure, and poor intake of vitamin D containing foods. Vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk of pulmonary exacerbations of CF. The objective of this study was to assess factors impacting vitamin D status in patients with CF recently hospitalized for a pulmonary exacerbation of CF. METHODS: This was a pre-planned analysis of vitamin D intake in patients enrolled in a multi-center, double-blind, randomized controlled study examining vitamin D therapy for pulmonary exacerbation of CF. Demographic information, responses from a habitual sun exposure questionnaire and food frequency questionnaire, and vitamin D supplement usage were queried and compared to serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations. RESULTS: A total of 48 subjects were included in this analysis. Subjects were taking approximately 1,200 IU of vitamin D daily. Reported vitamin D intake, age, race, employment, and education were not significantly associated with vitamin D status in this population. However, smoking status, sunlight exposure in the last 3 years, and skin type (in the bivariate model) were all significantly associated with vitamin D status (all p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Sunlight exposure was the most predictive determinant of vitamin D status in patients with CF prior to pulmonary exacerbation. Subjects reported vitamin D intake below the recommended amounts. The role and mode of optimizing vitamin D status prior to a pulmonary exacerbation needs further investigation.

During the past 6 months, the world has lost almost 950,000 lives because of the outbreak of COVID-19, with more than 31 million individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 worldwide. In response, lockdowns, and various other policies have been implemented. Unfortunately, many individuals are violating those policies and governments have been urging people to comply with the behavioral guidelines. In this paper, we argue that personality traits need to be considered to understand and encourage more effective public compliance with COVID 19 transmission mitigation behavioral guidelines. Using a sample of 8,548 individuals from Japan, we show that certain personality traits are related to the tendency to comply with COVID-19 transmission mitigation behavioral guidelines. We emphasize the importance of understanding why people respond differently to the same authority's messages and provide actionable insights for government policy makers and those who implement policies.

A central problem for the international governance of heritable germline gene editing is that there are important differences in attitudes and values as well as ethical and health care considerations around the world. These differences are reflected in a complicated and diverse regulatory landscape. Several publications have discussed whether reproductive uses would be legally permissible in individual countries and whether clinical applications could emerge in the context of regulatory gaps and gray areas. Systematic comparative studies that explore issues related to the governance of this technology from different national and international perspectives are needed to address the lack of knowledge in this area. In this research report, we contribute to filling this gap by presenting views of stakeholders in the United Kingdom on challenges to the governance of heritable genome editing. We present findings from a multistakeholder study conducted in the United Kingdom between October 2016 and January 2018 and funded by the Wellcome Trust. This research included interviews, literature analysis, and a workshop. We involved leading U.K. scientists, in vitro fertilization clinicians, and representatives from regulatory bodies, patient organizations, and other civil societal organizations, as well as fertility companies. Part one of this article explores stakeholder perceptions of possible global developments in heritable genome editing and associated risks and governance challenges. Part two presents a range of policy options that were generated during the workshop in relation to the challenges discussed in part one.

Although organizational research has made tremendous strides in the last century, recent advances in neuroscience and the imaging of functional brain activity remain underused. In fact, even the use of well-established psychophysiological measurement tools is comparatively rare. Following the lead of social cognitive neuroscience, in this review, we conceptualize organizational cognitive neuroscience as a field dedicated to exploring the processes within the brain that underlie or influence human decisions, behaviors, and interactions either (a) within organizations or (b) in response to organizational manifestations or institutions. We discuss organizational cognitive neuroscience, bringing together work that may previously have been characterized rather atomistically, and provide a brief overview of individual methods that may be of use. Subsequently, we discuss the possible convergence and integration of the different neuroimaging and psychophysiological measurement modalities. A brief review of prior work in the field shows a significant need for a more coherent and theory-driven approach to organizational cognitive neuroscience. In response, we discuss a recent example of such work, along with three hypothetical case studies that exemplify the link between organizational and psychological theory and neuroscientific methods.

Recent years have seen advances in neuroimaging to such an extent that neuroscientists are able to directly study the frequency, location, and timing of neuronal activity to an unprecedented degree. However, marketing science has remained largely unaware of such advances and their huge potential. In fact, the application of neuroimaging to market research--what has come to be called "neuromarketing"--has caused considerable controversy within neuroscience circles in recent times. This paper is an attempt to widen the scope of neuromarketing beyond commercial brand and consumer behaviour applications, to include a wider conceptualisation of marketing science. Drawing from general neuroscience and neuroeconomics, neuromarketing as a field of study is defined, and some future research directions are suggested.

In the minus-strand transfer step of HIV-1 reverse transcription, the nucleocapsid protein (NC) promotes annealing of the 3' 'R' (repeat) region of the RNA genome to its complementary sequence located in the newly synthesized minus-strand strong-stop DNA. The R region contains the highly stable transactivation response (TAR) RNA hairpin. To gain insights into the molecular details of TAR RNA-NC interactions, we carried out hydroxyl radical footprinting, as well as gel-shift and fluorescence anisotropy binding assays using wild-type and mutant forms of NC. Our results support the conclusion that NC variants with mutations in their zinc finger domains have dramatically altered TAR RNA binding interactions relative to wild-type NC. These data demonstrate that a specific zinc finger architecture is required for optimal TAR RNA binding, and help to explain the requirement for the zinc finger motifs of NC in its role as a nucleic acid chaperone in minus-strand transfer.

Loss aversion (LA), the idea that negative valuations have a higher psychological impact than positive ones, is considered an important variable in consumer research. The literature on aging and behavior suggests older individuals may show more LA, although it is not clear if this is an effect of aging in general (as in the continuum from age 20 and 50 years), or of the state of older age (e.g., past age 65 years). We also have not yet identified the potential biological effects of aging on the neural processing of LA. In the current study we used a cohort of subjects with a 30 year range of ages, and performed whole brain functional MRI (fMRI) to examine the ventral striatum/nucleus accumbens (VS/NAc) response during a passive viewing of affective faces with model-based fMRI analysis incorporating behavioral data from a validated approach/avoidance task with the same stimuli. Our a priori focus on the VS/NAc was based on (1) the VS/NAc being a central region for reward/aversion processing; (2) its activation to both positive and negative stimuli; (3) its reported involvement with tracking LA. LA from approach/avoidance to affective faces showed excellent fidelity to published measures of LA. Imaging results were then compared to the behavioral measure of LA using the same affective faces. Although there was no relationship between age and LA, we observed increasing neural differential sensitivity (NDS) of the VS/NAc to avoidance responses (negative valuations) relative to approach responses (positive valuations) with increasing age. These findings suggest that a central region for reward/aversion processing changes with age, and may require more activation to produce the same LA behavior as in younger individuals, consistent with the idea of neural efficiency observed with high IQ individuals showing less brain activation to complete the same task.
