RESUMEN

Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) has recently received much attention as a low-carbon-footprint and high-energy-efficient strategy for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. However, achieving the goals of a high evaporation rate, ecofriendliness, and high tolerance to salt ions in brine remains a bottleneck. Herein, a novel hydrogel-based evaporator for effective solar desalination was synthesized on the basis of sodium alginate (SA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) incorporating a carbon nanotube (CNT)-wrapped melamine sponge (MS) through a simple dipping-drying-cross-linking process. The hydrogel-based evaporator reaches a high evaporation rate of 2.18 kg m-2 h-1 in 3.5 wt % brine under 1 sun irradiation. Furthermore, it demonstrated excellent salt ion rejection in high-concentration salt water. Simultaneously, it exhibits excellent purification functionality toward heavy metals and organic dyes. This study provides a simple and efficient strategy for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the potential causal relationship between domain-specific sedentary behaviors (including television watching, computer use, and driving) and hypertension risk in European populations. METHODS: Initially, we conducted a multivariable Cox regression analysis to evaluate the associations between domain-specific sedentary behaviors and the risk of developing hypertension using data from 261,829 hypertension-free participants in the UK Biobank. To validate the findings of observational analysis, we employed two-sample univariable mendelian randomization (UVMR) analysis utilizing summary statistics from genome-wide association study conducted on European populations. We then performed multivariable mendelian randomization (MVMR) analysis to account for the influence of the risk factors for hypertension. RESULTS: In this prospective observational analysis, individuals who spent >3 h per day watching television had significantly higher risk of developing hypertension (HR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.20-1.29, P < 0.001) compared to those who watched television for 0-1 h per day. The mendelian randomization analysis provided consistent evidence for a causal relationship between prolonged television watching time and hypertension risk (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.25-1.69, P < 0.001; all PMVMR < 0.05) in both UVMR and MVMR results. No significant associations were found between computer use, driving behaviors and the risk of hypertension in either the observational or UVMR/MVMR analyses. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide evidence for a causal effect specifically linking higher television watching time to an increased risk of hypertension and indicate the potential effectiveness of reducing television viewing time as a preventive measure to mitigate the risk of hypertension.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the methodological quality of the systematic reviews/meta-analyses (SRs/MAs) of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) using A Measurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR2) and to explore the potential influencing factors. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant studies. AMSTAR2 was used for evaluating the methodological quality of eligible SRs/MAs. Differences between methodological characteristics of SRs/MAs were compared using chi-square tests. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to assess reviewer agreement in the pre-experiment. Multivariate regression analysis was used to identify potential factors affecting methodological quality. RESULTS: A total of 45 SRs/MAs were included. After AMSTAR2 evaluation, only two (4.4%) of 45 SRs/MAs were moderate, three (6.7%) were rated as low quality, and the remainder 40 (88.9%) were rated as critically low quality. Among the 16 items of AMSTAR2, item 3 and item 10 had the poorest adherence. Item 4 received the most significant number of "Partial Yes" responses. Univariable analysis indicated that there were significant differences in methodological quality in SRs between different continents (P = 0.027) as well as between preregistered SRs and those that were not (P = 0.004). However, in multivariate analysis, there was no significant association between methodological quality and the following research characteristics: publication year, continent, whether reporting followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA), preregistration, funding support, randomized controlled trials (RCT) enrollment, whether SR was published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), and whether with meta-analysis. Additionally, subgroup analysis based on interventional SRs/MAs showed that continent was independently associated with the methodological quality of SRs/MAs of CP/CPPS via univariable and multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that the methodological quality of SRs/MAs of CP/CPPS was generally poor. SRs/MAs of CP/CPPS should adopt the AMSTAR2 to enhance their methodological quality.

Memristor-based neuromorphic computing is expected to overcome the bottleneck of von Neumann architecture. An artificial synaptic device with continuous conductance variation is essential for implementing bioinspired neuromorphic systems. In this work, a memristor based on Pt/LiSiOx/TiN structure is developed to emulate an artificial synapse, which shows non-volatile multilevel resistance state memory behavior. Moreover, the high nonlinearity caused by abrupt changes in the set process is optimized by adjusting the initial resistance. 100 levels of continuously modulated conductance states are achieved and the nonlinearity factors are reduced to 1.31. The significant improvement is attributed to the decrease in the Schottky barrier height and the evolution of the conductive filaments. Finally, due to the improved linearity of the long-term potentiation/long-term depression behaviors in LiSiOxmemristor, a robust recognition rate (∼94.58%) is achieved for pattern recognition with the modified National Institute of Standards and Technology handwriting database. The Pt/LiSiOx/TiN memristor shows significant potential in high-performance multilevel data storage and neuromorphic computing systems.

The thermal process of a (001) silicon wafer subjected to a continuous-wave (CW) laser and 100-10000 Hz pulsed laser irradiation is investigated experimentally and numerically. The temperature evolution of the spot center is measured using an infrared radiation pyrometer. The waveforms of the temperature evolution curves provide valuable information about melting, solidification, vaporization, and fracture. To gain a better understanding of the thermal process, a three-dimensional finite element model is established, and numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the temperature, stress, and dislocation field. The results show that the 10 kHz laser exhibits the highest heating efficiency before vaporization, but the lowest ablation efficiency after vaporization due to the shielding effect of vapor. The diffusion time of vapor is found to be more than 50 µs. Fracture occurs during 1 kHz laser irradiation. The motion of liquid may play a significant role, but it cannot be evidenced by a simulation due to complex dependence of material parameters on dislocation. This issue should be addressed as a priority in future studies.

COMSOL Multiphysics was employed to establish a dislocation model based on the Alexander and Haasen (AH) model, the heat conduction equation, and Hooke's law for calculating the dislocation distribution of germanium (Ge) under laser irradiation. The numerical simulation results were obtained. A continuous 1080 nm laser was utilized to ablate the monocrystalline Ge wafers to validate the model. The experimental results show that no surface damage appears until the irradiances go up to 234W/cm2 for 100 ms laser ablation. This is consistent with the numerical findings. The initiation times of surface damage by the experiments at 234W/cm2 and above agree well with the numerical results, which means that the model can efficiently predict the dislocation field.

BACKGROUND: Most end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergo open surgical techniques for peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter placement. An alternative method to PD catheter implantation is the half-percutaneous ("Half-Perc") technique based on a modified trocar that is performed by a nephrologist. The single-center, retrospective, observational, cohort study presented here aimed to compare the effects of the "Half-Perc" technique with the traditional open surgery on peritoneal catheter insertion. METHODS: From January 2015 to January 2018, 240 ESRD patients who received initial PD catheter placement were divided into two groups based on the "Half-Perc" technique or open surgery. All patients were followed up for 365 days or until loss of initial PD catheter or death. Prism 5 software was used to analyze baseline characteristics, operation-related parameters, mechanical complications and clinical outcomes. RESULTS: The "Half-Perc" technique showed shorter operation time, shorter incision length, lower postoperative pain scores and quick initiation of the PD program compared to the open surgery. After the 365-day follow-up, the "Half-Perc" group showed a higher rate of catheter dysfunction (4% versus 0.9%) that was corrected by conservative treatment in most patients and a lower rate of peritonitis (4% versus 9.6%) but mechanical complications and clinical outcomes did not differ between the two groups. There was also no significant difference based on overall patient mortality or catheter removal. One-year initial catheter survival and true catheter survival were not statistically different between the groups. CONCLUSION: The "Half-Perc" placement of the PD catheter using a modified metal trocar appears to be a non-inferior alternative method and carries minimal invasiveness and risk compared to open surgical placement.

The number of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with the advanced phase and motor fluctuations is increasing. The objective of this study is developing levodopa/benzylhydrazine orally disintegrating tablets (L/B ODTs), which would provide greater convenience and ease of use than conventional tablets for these patients. In the present study, the L/B ODTs were developed successfully with an optimized formulation using response surface methodology (RSM). The direct compression technology was employed for the preparation of L/B ODTs. Considerably shorter disintegration time and faster dissolution profile were obtained under the optimum formulation with microcrystalline cellulose 25.7%, cross-polyvinylpyrrolidone 6.22% and Sodium carboxymethyl starch 5.36%. The content uniformity (%) of levodopa and benzylhydrazine was 50 ± 1.4% and 14.25 ± 0.6%, respectively. Thickness, friability, hardness and wetting time were 2.8 ± 0.05 mm, 0.46 ± 0.21%, 5.42 ± 1.1 kp and 31.2 ± 2.1 s, respectively, and all of data well comply with the General Principles of the Chinese Pharmacopeia. Mannitol of 22% in formulation could bring a pleasant taste: sweet, cool and refreshing. Almost all the volunteers felt that the ODTs had good taste, no roughness, and no gritty feeling, indicating that the ODTs prepared had good palatability, so patients will have good compliance when taking medicine.

In this study, raw Arundo donax (A. donax) pieces were applied as carbon source and biofilm carriers for denitrification in a lab-scale moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) for the treatment of reverse osmosis concentrate gathered from local wastewater reuse plant. At stable phase (about 60 days), efficient denitrification performance was obtained with 73.2% ±â€¯19.5% NO3--N average removal and 8.10 ±â€¯3.45 g N/(m3·day) NO3--N average volumetric removal rate. Mass balance analysis showed that 4.84 g A. donax was required to remove 1 g TN. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis results showed that the copy numbers of 16S r-RNA, narG, nirS, nosZ and anammox gene of carrier biofilm and suspended activated sludge in the declination phase (BF2 and AS2) were lower than those of samples in the stable phase (BF1 and AS1), and relatively higher copy numbers of nirS and nirK genes with lower abundance of narG and nosZ genes were observed. High-throughput sequencing analysis was conducted for BF2 and AS2, and similar dominant phyla and classes with different abundance were obtained. The class Gammaproteobacteria affiliated with the phylum Proteobacteria was the most dominant microbial community in both BF2 (52.6%) and AS2 (41.7%). The PICRUSt prediction results indicated that 33 predictive specific genes were related to denitrification process, and the relative abundance of 18 predictive specific genes in BF2 were higher than those in AS2.

Ab initio calculations are performed to investigate the host-guest interactions and multiple occupancies of some sulfur- (H2S, CS2) and nitrogen-containing (N2, NO, and NH3) molecules in dodecahedral, tetrakaidecahedral, and hexakaidecahedral water cages in this work. Five functionals in the framework of density functional theory are compared, and the M06-2X method appears to be the best to predict the binding energies as well as the geometries. Results show that N2 and NO molecules are more stable in the 51264 cage, while NH3 and H2S prefer to stabilize in the 51262 cage. This suggests that the sI hydrates of NH3 and H2S exhibit higher stability than the sII structures and that sII NO hydrate is more stable than sI NO hydrate. N2 is found to be more stable in type II structure with single occupancy and to form type I hydrate with multiple occupancy, which is consistent with the experimental observations. As to the guest molecule CS2, it may undergo severe structural deformation in the 512 and 51262 cage. For multiple occupancies, the 512, 51262, and 51264 water cages can trap up to two N2 molecules, and the 51264 water cage can accommodate two H2S molecules. This work is expected to provide new insight into the formation mechanism of clathrate hydrates for atmospherically important molecules.

Slip phenomenon on a (001) silicon surface under 1064 nm laser ablation was studied by experiments and simulations. The surface morphologies of the silicon wafers after laser irradiation were observed using an optical microscope. The slip patterns showed that slip that occurred before melting was responsible for a low-quality ablation surface. The slip damage was predicted by a three-dimensional finite element model based on heat transfer and thermoelasticity theory. The judging criterion of slip was explained in detail. The numerical results gave a better understanding of slip phenomenon in experiments. It is shown that low laser irradiances cause slip and high laser irradiances are helpful in preventing slip. The threshold irradiance is ∼1 MW/cm2. Lasers with higher irradiance are essential to obtain a slip-free ablation on a (001) silicon surface.

The surface damage morphologies of single-crystal silicon induced by a combined pulse laser (CPL) and a single millisecond laser are investigated, respectively. The CPL includes a millisecond (ms) laser superposed by a nanosecond (ns) laser. Inspected by an optical microscope, it was found that the surface damage was more serious when the sample was irradiated by the CPL than by a single ms laser with the same incident laser energy. Besides surface cleavage, obvious ablation and fold areas were discovered by CPL irradiation. A two-dimensional spatial axisymmetric model was established to assess the difference between single ms laser and CPL irradiation and explain the generation mechanism of the different surface damage. This was attributed to the preheating effect by the ms laser and the surface damage caused by the ns laser.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that ADAM33 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain 33) polymorphisms might be associated with susceptibility to allergic rhinitis (AR). OBJECTIVE: Owing to mixed and inconclusive results, we conducted a meta-analysis to systematically summarise and clarify the association between ADAM33 S2, V4, T1, T2 and T+1 polymorphisms and AR risk. METHODS/RESULTS: A systematic search of studies on the association of ADAM33 polymorphisms with susceptibility to AR was conducted in Pubmed and Embase. A total of five case-control studies with 1251 patients and 1634 controls were included. Meta-analysis indicated an association between the ADAM33 S2 and AR in allele comparison (G/C:OR=1.40, 95% CI 1.08-1.82, P=0.012), heterozygote comparison ( CG/CC: OR=1.24, 95% CI 1.04-1.48, P=0.015), and dominant comparison (CG+GG/CC:OR=1.39, 95% CI 1.05-1.85, P=0.023). The meta-analysis also revealed an association between the ADAM33 V4 and AR in allele comparison (G/C:OR=1.67, 95% CI 1.01-2.75, P=0.044). However, no association was found between AR and the ADAM33 T1, T2 and T+1 polymorphisms in any gene model comparison. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis demonstrates that the ADAM33 S2 and V4 polymorphisms confer susceptibility to AR. However, these results should be interpreted with caution due to limited sample and heterogeneity. Large-scale and well-designed studies are needed to validate our findings.

Two uranyl carboxyphosphonates (H2dipy)[(UO2)3(H2O)2(H2DPTP)2]·2H2O (DPTP-U1) and (H2bbi)[(UO2)4(H2O)2(HDPTP)2] (DPTP-U2) [H6DPTP = 2,5-diphosphonoterephthalic acid, dipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, bbi = 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole)] were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The carboxyphosphonate ligand was formed through the in situ oxidation of (2,5-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)diphosphonic acid mediated by UO2(2+). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that DPTP-U1 possesses uranyl carboxyphosphonate layers that are separated by protonated dipy cations. Whereas DPTP-U2 is in a three-dimensional framework structure with channels filled by protonated bbi cations. The computational investigations give an insight into the nature of bonding interactions between uranium(VI) and carboxyphosphonate ligand. The spectroscopic properties were also studied.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) is involved in various physiological and pathological processes in the eye; however, the role of the A2AR signalling in corneal epithelial wound healing is not known. Here, the expression, therapeutic effects and signalling mechanism of A2AR in corneal epithelial wound healing were investigated using the A2AR agonist CGS21680. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: A2AR localization and expression during wound healing in the murine cornea were determined by immunofluorescence staining, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and western blotting. The effect of CGS21680 on corneal epithelial wound healing in the lesioned corneal and cultured human corneal epithelial cells (hCECs) by modulating cellular proliferation and migration was critically evaluated. The role of Hippo-YAP signalling in mediating the CGS21680 effect on wound healing by pharmacological inhibition of YAP signalling was explored. KEY RESULTS: A2AR expression was up-regulated after corneal epithelial injury. Topical administration of CGS21680 dose-dependently promoted corneal epithelial wound healing in the injured corneal epithelium by promoting cellular proliferation. Furthermore, CGS21680 accelerated the cellular proliferation and migration of hCECs in vitro. A2AR activation promoted early up-regulation and later down-regulation of YAP signalling molecules, and pharmacological inhibition of YAP signalling reverted CGS21680-mediated wound healing effect in vivo and in vitro. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: A2AR activation promotes wound healing by enhancing cellular proliferation and migration through the YAP signalling pathway. A2ARs play an important role in the maintenance of corneal epithelium integrity and may represent a novel therapeutic target for facilitating corneal epithelial wound healing.

An artificial nociceptor, as a critical and special bionic receptor, plays a key role in a bioelectronic device that detects stimuli and provides warnings. However, fully exploiting bioelectronic applications remains a major challenge due to the lack of the methods of implementing basic nociceptor functions and nociceptive blockade in a single device. In this work, we developed a Pt/LiSiOx/TiN artificial nociceptor. It had excellent stability under the 104 endurance test with pulse stimuli and exhibited a significant threshold current of 1 mA with 1 V pulse stimuli. Other functions such as relaxation, inadaptation, and sensitization were all realized in a single device. Also, the pain blockade function was first achieved in this nociceptor with over a 25% blocking degree, suggesting a self-protection function. More importantly, an obvious depression was activated by a stimulus over 1.6 V due to the cooperative effects of both lithium ions and oxygen ions in LiSiOx and the dramatic accumulation of Joule heat. The conducting channel ruptured partially under sequential potentiation, thus achieving nociceptive blockade, besides basic functions in one single nociceptor, which was rarely reported. These results provided important guidelines for constructing high-performance memristor-based artificial nociceptors and opened up an alternative approach to the realization of bioelectronic systems for artificial intelligence.

This study aimed to characterize the composition of intestinal and nasal microbiota in septic patients and identify potential microbial biomarkers for diagnosis. A total of 157 subjects, including 89 with sepsis, were enrolled from the affiliated hospital. Nasal swabs and fecal specimens were collected from septic and non-septic patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) and Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. DNA was extracted, and the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced using Illumina technology. Bioinformatics analysis, statistical processing, and machine learning techniques were employed to differentiate between septic and non-septic patients. The nasal microbiota of septic patients exhibited significantly lower community richness (P = 0.002) and distinct compositions (P = 0.001) compared to non-septic patients. Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus, Acinetobacter, and Pseudomonas were identified as enriched genera in the nasal microbiota of septic patients. The constructed machine learning model achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 89.08, indicating its efficacy in differentiating septic and non-septic patients. Importantly, model validation demonstrated the effectiveness of the nasal microecological diagnosis prediction model with an AUC of 84.79, while the gut microecological diagnosis prediction model had poor predictive performance (AUC = 49.24). The nasal microbiota of ICU patients effectively distinguishes sepsis from non-septic cases and outperforms the gut microbiota. These findings have implications for the development of diagnostic strategies and advancements in critical care medicine.IMPORTANCEThe important clinical significance of this study is that it compared the intestinal and nasal microbiota of sepsis with non-sepsis patients and determined that the nasal microbiota is more effective than the intestinal microbiota in distinguishing patients with sepsis from those without sepsis, based on the difference in the lines of nasal specimens collected.

Flickering light stimulation has emerged as a promising non-invasive neuromodulation strategy to alleviate neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the lack of a neurochemical underpinning has hampered its therapeutic development. Here, we demonstrate that light flickering triggered an immediate and sustained increase (up to 3 h after flickering) in extracellular adenosine levels in the primary visual cortex (V1) and other brain regions, as a function of light frequency and intensity, with maximal effects observed at 40 Hz frequency and 4000 lux. We uncovered cortical (glutamatergic and GABAergic) neurons, rather than astrocytes, as the cellular source, the intracellular adenosine generation from AMPK-associated energy metabolism pathways (but not SAM-transmethylation or salvage purine pathways), and adenosine efflux mediated by equilibrative nucleoside transporter-2 (ENT2) as the molecular pathway responsible for extracellular adenosine generation. Importantly, 40 Hz (but not 20 and 80 Hz) light flickering for 30 min enhanced non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) and REM sleep for 2-3 h in mice. This somnogenic effect was abolished by ablation of V1 (but not superior colliculus) neurons and by genetic deletion of the gene encoding ENT2 (but not ENT1), but recaptured by chemogenetic inhibition of V1 neurons and by focal infusion of adenosine into V1 in a dose-dependent manner. Lastly, 40 Hz light flickering for 30 min also promoted sleep in children with insomnia by decreasing sleep onset latency, increasing total sleep time, and reducing waking after sleep onset. Collectively, our findings establish the ENT2-mediated adenosine signaling in V1 as the neurochemical basis for 40 Hz flickering-induced sleep and unravel a novel and non-invasive treatment for insomnia, a condition that affects 20% of the world population.

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is one of the most common diseases of the male urological system while the etiology and treatment of CP/CPPS remain a thorny issue. Cumulative research suggested a potentially important role of glial cells in CP/CPPS. This narrative review retrospected literature and grasped the research process about glial cells and CP/CPPS. Three types of glial cells showed a crucial connection with general pain and psychosocial symptoms. Microglia might also be involved in lower urinary tract symptoms. Only microglia and astrocytes have been studied in the animal model of CP/CPPS. Activated microglia and reactive astrocytes were found to be involved in both pain and psychosocial symptoms of CP/CPPS. The possible mechanism might be to mediate the production of some inflammatory mediators and their interaction with neurons. Glial cells provide a new insight to understand the cause of complex symptoms of CP/CPPS and might become a novel target to develop new treatment options. However, the activation and action mechanism of glial cells in CP/CPPS needs to be further explored.
